Molly Sprayregen at LGBTQ Nation:
Four Southern states have joined together with four conservative organizations to sue the Biden administration over a recently issued rule banning anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in education.
[...]
The idea is that it’s impossible to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity without taking sex into account, a legal argument that the Supreme Court has already used in its 2020 Bostock v. Clayton Co. ruling with respect to job discrimination.
With the new rule, any school that receives federal funding will no longer be able to discriminate against LGBTQ+ students. This could affect states and school districts with policies to out LGBTQ+ students to their parents or ban trans students from using bathrooms that correspond with their gender. The new rules could also give students who face discrimination recourse in federal courts. Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia allege in the lawsuit that the Biden administration does not have the authority to make this rule and also that it goes beyond the original intentions of Title IX, according to CBS News. The states are joined in the lawsuit by the Independent Women’s Network, Parents Defending Education, Speech First, and the Independent Women’s Law Center.
“The role of Cabinet agencies is to interpret laws as written by Congress – not to redefine the meaning of words to suit a fringe group of activists,” said Parents Defending Education president Nicole Neily in a statement, which went on to claim the rule proves “the Biden administration’s contempt for families, trumping state laws which reiterate parents’ right to access information and make decisions about issues related to their children’s gender identity in schools.” “By lowering the standard of ‘harassment’ to little more than a one-off expression of humor, satire, or parody,” Neily continued, “the free speech rights of every young learner in America has become subordinate to how the most sensitive student might interpret a phrase. This Title IX rule is both unconstitutional and immoral, and we look forward to vindicating our members’ rights in court.”
“We will fight very strongly against this rule,” added Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R), “just to ensure this does what Congress intended it to do, and that is provide opportunities to everyone and especially protect the security and fairness for our biological females.” Moody also claimed the new rule “is really a radical departure from what Title IX was originally meant to do.” The lawsuit alleges that the rule “conflicts with many of the state plaintiffs’ laws that govern public institutions of higher education and primary and secondary education, including laws involving harassment, bathrooms, sports, parental rights, and more.” It continues, “The rule thus impedes the state plaintiffs’ sovereign authority to enforce and administer their laws and creates pressure on the state plaintiffs to change their laws and practices.” The new rules, however, do not discuss transgender student-athletes and which teams they can play on. The DOE is reportedly planning to issue a separate rule regarding what Title IX means for sports participation.
4 Southern states are suing the Biden Administration for the right to discriminate against LGBTQ+ children over the LGBTQ+-friendly Title IX changes.

Prosecutors Drop Charges Against Northwestern Students for Pro-Palestine School Paper Parody
The parent company of the Daily Northwestern backed down after days of backlash and promises to boycott from students, faculty, and alumni.
Following days of backlash, prosecutors have decided to drop the criminal case against two Northwestern University students who created a parody version of the school’s student newspaper attacking Northwestern’s stance on the war in Gaza. Police brought the misdemeanor charges after the company behind the university’s student paper, Students Publishing Company, or SPC, announced that it had “engaged law enforcement to investigate and find those responsible.” The mock front page featured fake quotes from school officials, accusations of Israeli war crimes, and a fake ad for Birthright Israel — the travel abroad program that sends young American Jews to Israel — with the tagline “One man’s home is another man’s former home!” But on Wednesday, following a report by The Intercept and Responsible Statecraft, SPC announced that it would actively seek for the charges to be dropped, and prosecutors agreed to close the case. “Given the specific nature of these cases, we have thoroughly reviewed the circumstances and engaged in discussions with Northwestern University and its campus newspaper provider,” said the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in a statement. “As a result of this review, we have decided to dismiss the charges.” Prosecutors say the misdemeanor charges were filed directly by police and were not actively approved by the state’s attorney’s office. “Our criminal justice system should only be utilized when there is no other recourse for accountability,” the prosecutors added. “Northwestern University and campus police are fully equipped to hold the involved individuals accountable, ensuring that such matters are handled in a manner that is both appropriate to the educational context and respectful of students’ rights.” The reversal follows days of harsh backlash from students, faculty, and alumni of Northwestern. More than 70 student groups had promised to boycott the Daily Northwestern until charges were dropped, and more than 5,000 people signed a petition calling for the case to be dropped.

[Spoiler-free review] last night I finished watching Billions and in the final (7th) season they added Babak Tafti who is soooo fucking hot, but a still kinda unknown actor (he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page?!). Just look at him👀🥺🥴
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also had a small role in Succession, although unusually for me I think he’s hotter without the beard (but still very very hot)
Tumblr media
Anyway Billions was such a weird series. The plot got so formulaic and the characters behaviors sort of ended up parodying themselves but (I think) that was probably intentional because it kind of added a slapstick comedy to what would have otherwise been just a typical drama.
They also have the striking physical transformation of Paul Giamatti who lost a LOT of weight mid season when filming paused during pandemic/strikes (one of the most unbelievable scenes was a bunch of NYPD wearing masks lol) and they also had an interesting non binary and neurodivergent character join in season 2 and became a core/main character from S3 to end of series.
I won’t give specific spoilers, but the ending I think was pretty satisfying from a fan perspective.
Also shout out to Condola Rashad who played this badass bitch attorney and (IMO) had a great character arc.
Tumblr media
I fuckin hate the billionaire class and government corruption and the plot sort of played to this, but it also ultimately casts them as heros which is gross but eh, it was still an entertaining watch.
A solid 7/10 bananas 🍌

This Note's for You · Neil Young
The song and video are a indictment of corporate sponsorship in music. The title mocks Budweiser's "This Bud's for You" ad campaign. The video parodied corporate rock and the pretensions of advertising, patterned after a series of Michelob ads that featured contemporary rock artists such as Eric Clapton, Genesis and Steve Winwood. Included were parodies of commercials with impersonators of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Spuds McKenzie.
It was initially banned by MTV (after legal threats from Michael Jackson's attorneys.) After Canadian music channel MuchMusic ran it immediately, making it a hit MTV reversed their decision and put it into heavy rotation, it won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Video of the Year for 1989.
And by coincidence that same video has been blocked by the Warner Music Group from sharing on this platform. You can view it here - Neil Young - This Note's For You

Revelations that the Trump Organization created a new company just as New York Attorney General Letitia James was about to file a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump and his business has drawn mockery online.
James' office sued Trump, the Trump Organization, senior management and other entities last month for what it alleged was "years of financial fraud to obtain a host of economic benefits." The former President is accused in the suit of falsely inflating his net worth by billions of dollars with the help of three of his children and senior Trump Organization executives in order to deceive lenders, insurers and tax authorities.
The New York Attorney General wrote in a court filing on Thursday that on the exact day the lawsuit was filed, September 21, the Trump Organization registered a new entity with the New York Secretary of State called "Trump Organization II LLC."
"That entity is a foreign corporation that was incorporated in Delaware. The Trump Organization has since refused to provide any assurance that it will not seek to move assets out of New York to evade legal accountability," James' office wrote in a release. The court filing notes that attorneys for Trump said the Trump Organization had not taken any steps to avoid potential consequences of the lawsuit.
"On the eve of this filing, counsel did offer to provide assurances and advance notice to address what were described as 'purported concerns,' but again offered no concrete mechanism to either effectuate or enforce that offer," the filing added.
The court filing's details about the almost identically named new company sparked parodies and ridicule on Twitter Thursday. One user, television producer Jonathan Goldman, wrote: "Trump Organization II is like the criminal putting on a fake mustache and thinking nobody recognizes him."
Tumblr media
In another tweet, Goldman shared a picture of Trump with a drawn-on mustache.
"BREAKING: Trump Organization II announces its new CEO," he captioned the photo.
Heather Cox Richardson, a professor, took aim at the timing of the creation of Trump Organization II.
Tumblr media
"I dunno, but creating 'Trump Organization II' on the same day that NYAG Letitia James sued the Trump Organization, and then continuing the same financial practices, sure sounds crimey," Richardson tweeted.
The New York Attorney General's court filing on Thursday was a motion for a preliminary injunction seeking to block what it alleged was an "ongoing fraudulent scheme" by Trump and the Trump Organization.
Writer Mike Larsen's response to the revelation centered on the name of the new business.
Tumblr media
"On second thought, Trump Organization II might not have been the best name for the shell corporation," he tweeted.
The measures James' office is seeking to curtail the alleged continued fraud include blocking the Trump Organization from transferring any material assets to another entity without court approval, and requiring that all supporting and relevant materials are included in any new financial disclosures to banks and insurers. The office's release on Thursday also stated that James was seeking court permission to electronically serve Trump and his son, Eric Trump, "as both defendants and their counsels have refused to accept service of the complaints for almost a month."
A Trump Organization spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement back when the lawsuit was filed that it "has nothing to do with the facts or the law" and denounced it as political targeting of Trump and his company.
Newsweek has reached out to the Trump Organization for comment.

‘Reverse Freedom Rides’: An echo of Martha’s Vineyard migrant flights 60 years ago
Eliza Davis was bewildered the day she arrived in a wealthy tourist town on Cape Cod. An agricultural worker, she had been promised work and housing if she took a free trip to another state. Days later, disembarking with her eight children, she had little idea where she was, that a president had a family compound down the road, or that she was a “pawn,” as locals told the New York Times, in a political stunt.
Tumblr media
Davis, 36, was not among the migrants who arrived Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard — a resort island off Cape Cod where former president Barack Obama has a home — courtesy of a flight arranged by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). She was a Black woman from Alabama, bused to and abandoned in Hyannis, Mass., in 1962, not far from the holiday home of President John F. Kennedy.
Today’s migrants in Martha’s Vineyard are now being transported to the same Cape Cod military base that housed the “Reverse Freedom Riders” decades ago.
It was all part of the so-called Reverse Freedom Rides, arranged by White segregationists in 1962 in retaliation for the Freedom Rides of the previous summer, when Black and White volunteers rode buses through the South supporting desegregation.
The plot was organized by white supremacist Citizens’ Councils in Arkansas, who bought radio ads and made fliers advertising the “opportunity” to African Americans.
They focused on recruiting men with criminal records and single mothers with a lot of children, cynically presuming White liberals would welcome them the least.
Tumblr media
Lela Mae Williams, an Arkansas woman who was also dropped off in Hyannis with her nine youngest children, was dressed in her finest clothes, because she had been told Kennedy himself was going to greet them when they arrived, according to 2020 NPR report. She had packed little else, because anything she needed was going to be provided, she was told.
Along with the new arrivals, local Hyannis officials received anonymous letters, according to the Times, saying things like, “Abe Lincoln sowed the seeds and now the North can reap the harvest,” and “We have put up with millions of n------ for 100 years, so why should you squawk?”
It was a contrast to the Great Migration of the previous decades, during which White residents did everything they could to stop Black workers from leaving.
Families would often have to sneak to the train station under cover of darkness or use other subterfuge to escape, described in detail by historian Isabel Wilkerson in her book “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration.”
Southern segregationist groups baldly deceived Black families using tactics “consciously parodying the Freedom Rides,” noted Clive Webb, an American history professor at the University of Sussex, in a 2004 paper on the Reverse Freedom Rides. The Greater New Orleans Citizens’ Council ran newspaper ads in 1962 promising "Free Transportation plus $5.00 for Expenses to any Negro Man or Woman or Family (no limit to size) who desire to migrate to the Nation’s Capital or any city in the north of their choosing.” Notices were also posted in prisons, offering free transportation to prisoners whose sentences were set to expire, Webb found.
The largest contingent of riders traveled from Little Rock to Hyannis. Amis Guthridge, an attorney and president of the Capitol Citizens’ Council in Little Rock, hoped to test Edward Kennedy, who was campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Senate, wrote Webb. “President Kennedy’s brother assures you a grand reception to Massachusetts,” said the council’s recruitment posters. “Good jobs, housing etc. are promised.”
Then, as now in Cape Cod, many residents of Hyannis met the riders with open arms. A local committee formed to provide housing, clothing and money to the new arrivals.
Davis and at least 50 others, including 33 children, were housed in the dormitory of a nearby community college; others were housed in private homes, and later, a nearby Army barracks was used until they could be placed with jobs and housing in the surrounding area.
Massachusetts Gov. John Volpe condemned the rides as “traffic in human misery.”
Tumblr media
“The only way to meet such cruelty is by wisdom and love,” Episcopal Bishop Anson Phelps Stokes Jr. told the Associated Press. He urged residents to “show understanding and compassion.”
The welcome was not universal. When the Massachusetts governor asked for federal help, the Kennedy administration declined.
Kennedy called it “a rather cheap exercise” but otherwise avoided the issue.
In New York, when a few dozen Black people arrived from Louisiana, city officials paid the bus fare for at least six to return to their home state, according to the Times.
Some of the Southerners sent to Hyannis got jobs as cooks or chambermaids or in candle-making factories, according to a 1964 column in the Boston Globe. When the summer ended, the jobs in Hyannis dried up. All but one family left. Victoria Bell, who appears in the photo at the top of this story, lived in Hyannis for the rest of her life, working as a nurse to the elderly and volunteering to help the poor, according to news clippings in the Barnstable Patriot. At least one of her children made the honor roll at school, and some still live in the area. Bell died in 2000.
Within a few years, Lela Mae Williams and her kids ended up in a Boston housing project, where the family struggled without nearby relatives, one of her daughters told NPR’s “CodeSwitch” in 2020. Racist White neighbors resented their presence in public schools and harassed them.
Tumblr media
The Reverse Freedom Rides ended up backfiring politically, Webb argued, because even “moderate” segregationists were put off by the “cynical manipulation” of poor African Americans. In Little Rock, the Arkansas Gazettesaid the scheme “had never been condoned by the better thinking people here.” New Orleans radio and television station WDSU denounced the campaign as “sick sensationalism bordering on the moronic.” A Gallup poll published in June 1962 showed widespread disapproval of the Councils’ tactics among White Southerners.
In the end, only about 200 people were sent on Reverse Freedom Rides — far fewer than the thousands of migrants who have been transported north to D.C., New York and now Massachusetts in the past few months.
On Thursday morning, two buses from Texas dropped off asylum-seeking immigrants in front of Vice President Harris’s residence in Northwest Washington.
There is one big difference between the migrant transports now and the Reverse Freedom Rides of 60 years ago.
In the 1960s, the buses were funded by anonymous people donating to private segregationist groups, which aimed to tell the North “to put up or shut up,” as one New Orleans leader said. DeSantis has not said how the flights he arranged to Martha’s Vineyard were funded, but Tex. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has used state resources and donations for the buses. And both have been eager to take credit.

New Hampshire House Passes Bill Requiring Disclosure in Political Ads Featuring Deceptive Synthetic Media
Tumblr media
Legislation aims to address concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in spreading misinformation
The New Hampshire House has passed a bill that would require political advertisements featuring deceptive synthetic media to include disclosure language. This move comes in response to the growing concerns about the use of sophisticated artificial intelligence tools, such as voice-cloning software and image generators, in elections around the world. The rapid spread of misinformation through these technologies has raised alarm bells among lawmakers and the public alike.
Recent events in New Hampshire, including the investigation into robocalls sent to voters during the presidential primary, have highlighted the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. These robocalls featured an AI-generated voice mimicking President Joe Biden and were orchestrated by a political consultant to draw attention to the risks associated with this technology. However, the attorney general's office has stated that these calls violated the state's voter suppression law.
youtube
Addressing the Spread of Misinformation
The bill passed by the New Hampshire House aims to address the concerns surrounding the use of deceptive artificial intelligence in political advertising. It would require disclosure when such synthetic media is used within 90 days of an election. The disclosure language would clarify that the image, video, or audio in the advertisement has been manipulated or generated by artificial intelligence technology and does not depict actual speech or conduct.
Protecting the Integrity of Elections
By implementing this requirement for disclosure, lawmakers hope to safeguard the integrity of elections and combat the spread of misinformation. The use of artificial intelligence tools in political campaigns has the potential to deceive voters and undermine the democratic process. With the inclusion of disclosure language, voters will be better equipped to identify and evaluate the authenticity of the content they encounter.
Exemptions for Satire and Parody
The bill, which passed without debate, includes exemptions for satire or parody. This acknowledges the importance of political humor and the need to strike a balance between free expression and responsible use of artificial intelligence. While satire and parody can also involve the manipulation of media, their intent is typically understood to be humorous or satirical rather than deceptive.
Moving Forward with Transparency
The passage of this bill by the New Hampshire House is a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by synthetic media in political advertising. By requiring disclosure, lawmakers are sending a clear message that transparency and accountability are crucial in maintaining the integrity of elections. This legislation serves as a model for other states and countries grappling with similar concerns.
The use of artificial intelligence tools in political advertising has raised serious concerns about the spread of misinformation. The bill passed by the New Hampshire House is a proactive measure aimed at addressing these concerns and protecting the integrity of elections. By requiring disclosure in political ads featuring deceptive synthetic media, voters will have a better understanding of the authenticity of the content they encounter.
As technology continues to advance, it is essential for lawmakers to stay ahead of the curve and enact legislation that ensures transparency and accountability in the political sphere.

SMART BOMB
The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
July 12, 2022
NICE LEGS PORK CHOP
It's a mad, mad, mad world and it's getting angrier all the time. Republican Kevin Smith, a candidate to challenge New Hampshire Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan, once called a female subordinate in Londonderry, “Pork Chop.” In what context, we're not sure, but it can't be good. In the land of the angry, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh ducked out the back of a Washington, D.C. steakhouse when activists outside arrived to protest his vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. Some quipped on twitter, there is no constitutional right to dine in peace. Yikes. A S.W.A.T. team swarmed right-wing strategist Steve Bannon's house in a so-called “swatting” attack after someone called in a false report of a man with a gun. Bummer. Yep, we're just getting nastier. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and soccer star Megan Rapinoe, recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, are “losers,” said Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who pushed dozens of failed lawsuits arguing that Donald Trump won. Shame — never. We're up to here in fear and loathing, so things like this are no longer surprising: A Subway restaurant employee in Atlanta was killed after a customer shot him during an argument over mayonnaise. Mayonnaise, really? What would have happened if they had words over pickle relish. Good grief.
UP YOURS JOHN OLIVER
OK, that does it. John Oliver, that silly Brit on HBO's “Last Week Tonight,” is making fun of Utah. Don't you just hate it when that happens. Oliver thinks it's hilarious that we have this badass drought turning the Great Salt Lake into a dust bowl and all we're doing is praying for rain. Real funny. Michael Safsten was so mad he wrote this in the Deseret News: “What was communicated to the viewer was not just that Utah was doing nothing, but that Utah is full of rubes who pray to a mythical sky-god and are deserving of mockery.” The nerve. If that weren't enough, actor Brian Cox appeared as God: “You can't pray yourself out of a drought,” he said, adding that Utah brought it on itself by using more water than anywhere else. Well horse pucky, our governor wasn't having it. You can't make fun of Utah and you can't make fun of God. And you can't make fun of the Great Salt Lake, our sanctimonious legislators or Moroni. It's true Oliver's show is largely about using current events to make fools of people — usually fat cats, politicians and idiots, like Majorie Taylor Green. That's his schtick. Some say we should be able to laugh at ourselves instead of turning red and muttering bad words. Well, we do have a sense of humor, we do, but screw that, you can't make fun of us, you stinkin' limey.
INDULGING THE TRUMPERS
How “the supplicant fanboys permitted Donald Trump's depravity to be inflicted on the rest of us,” is the story Mark Leibovich just had to tell in his new book, “Thank You for Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission.” Attorney General Bill Bar is the “Yo-Yo Ma of White House toadyism,” Lindsey Graham is “Gilligan to Donald Trump’s Skipper,” others are a “collection of pet rocks.” The entire Trump project was a scurrilous joke — a parody of American political life and decline, writes Joe Klein in a Washington Post book review. The subject isn't new but still boils the blood. “[T]he joke was on us, the American people,” Klein writes, “especially those of us, the dreaded elite, who took things like health care and pollution and education and overseas authoritarians such as Vladimir Putin seriously.” Why are those MAGA Trumpers, who are up to their ears in cell phones, flat-screen TVs and souped-up pickups  so damn angry? Leibovich writes: “[A]t a certain point, our attempts at “understanding” become indulgence... a lesser version of the Republicans’ capitulation to the slovenly ignorance of the Trumpers. Why can’t we be as angry at them as they are at us?” Because we know better, says Klein, if we don't figure this out, we won't have a country.
Post script — That's going to do it for another hot week in Zion, where the staff here at Smart Bomb keeps track of disinformation so you don't have to. Well, not exactly. No one can keep tabs on the misinformation tsunami flooding this country. The Biden Administration tried in April by creating the Disinformation Governance Board within the Department of Homeland Security. It would coordinate responses to false information aimed at social, political and financial targets. Not surprisingly, Fox News and right-wing Republicans compared it to George Orwell's “Ministry of Truth.” The ACLU objected, too, saying a federal agency ought not to be policing “the truth.” The board was put on permanent hold and is now a fading memory. In this country we have the freedom to lie our asses off — something about the First Amendment. “Stop the Steal,” anyone? In the end, misinformation is about money and power. Fox News demonstrates that a steady stream of outrage is very profitable. Social media giants, such as Facebook and Youtube, spread misinformation through algorithms that direct users to watch other similar content. Then those users pass it along and so stuff, like Trump's Big Lie, goes round and round until it takes hold. Hello brave new world.
Well Wilson, it's confusing out there and Americans of all stripes are none too pleased. We are, once again, going to hell in a hand-basket. FYI: That expression comes from the French Revolution where heads fell from the guillotine into a basket. For real. At any rate, you and the guys in the band must have something that will keep us from losing our heads. So pick it, Wilson:
Summer rain taps at my window West wind soft as a sweet dream My love warm as the sunshine Sittin' here by me, she's here by me She stepped out of the rainbow Golden hair shinin' like moon glow Warm lips soft as a soul Sittin' here by me, she's here by me We sailed into the sunset Drifted home, caught by a gulf stream Never gave a thought for tomorrow Just let tomorrow be, now, let tomorrow be She wants to live in the Rockies She says that's where we'll find peace Settle down, raise up a fam'ly To call our own, yeah, we'll have a home
The snow drifts by my window North wind blowin' like thunder Our love's burnin' like fire And she's here by me, yeah, she's here with me Let tomorrow be
(Summer Rain — Johnny Rivers)

Ignorant past me trying hard too hard to remember AA is just a game and not real: Prosecutors and defense attorneys dating doesn't happen IRL. It would be super scandalous and a massive conflict of interest, and it can probably get you disbarred. They can't even take the same cases together, besides! Anyways, real lawyers just drone on and on in a courthouse until they sleep, no drama ever happens in the legal community, that's all made up by the media. I'm sure real lawyers absolutely HATE this pairing because of how ridiculous and unrealistic it is-
