Since I’ll need to do another playthrough of the game(see below) and am currently playing through something else, I bought the copy of this, so here’s some thoughts on my last Gamefly rental, Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists.

Because of the micromanaging you need to do to help the town improve, it can feel even more daunting than the Atelier games with time limits, at least to me.

For Nelke to stay as the administrator for the town, she needs to complete several, increasingly difficult tasks set by her father. In the event you fail, you can start over with a multiplier(increased money/faster friendship gain, and you keep the production number of items) based on how far you made it before. This will probably happen to most people, since the later ones get pretty difficult if you don’t really know what you’re doing(especially Task 8, make 3 Million Cole, and Task 9, Get 50,000 Residents). To get the game’s True Ending, you’ll need to do all of the main Tasks and Sub-Tasks in one playthrough.

It’s nice seeing all the characters from Atelier games we didn’t get making their first appearance overseas(though Marie and Viorate had cameos in Cross Edge and Trinity Universe, respectively), as well as ones we did get(like from the Iris and Mana Khemia games, and all main Atelier games from Rorona onward, minus Atelier Annie). Seeing them interact with each other is nice to see, too. It gives some details about their games and adventures, which is good for the ones we never got.

Speaking of Viorate...I still think they should have gone with Violet, instead. You could still use her nickname, Vio, and it doesn’t sound as awkward. It’s not that big a deal, though. ^^;

On the topic of various Atelier protagonists interacting with each other...still waiting and hoping for an ‘Atelier Warriors’ game, Gust/KT. Just saying. =P

Not all of the alchemists/characters who join the town can go with you on Investigations, only Marie, Elie, Lilie, Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Ayesha, Escha and Logy, the Shallies, Sophie, Firis, and Lydie and Suelle. The Iris and Mana Khemia characters at least have the excuse of there being no mana to rely on in Nelke’s world(though they could probably still fight a bit without it), but Judie and Vio just decide not to go, and do things on their own on Holidays. Fighters like Sterk can join to help the town, but you only have four characters who can act as Vanguards for the alchemists: Nelke, her maid Misty, the chief of the town Knoss, and Lotos, the examiner. Also, before the alchemists join you on Investigations, you need to do one event of theirs on a Holiday where they ask to help you out, which, I think should happen automatically, since it’d give you just a little bit more time for everything else.

Town facilities can be upgraded to improve their productivity, and have a fairy assigned to help out there. Fairies can only help if an actual character, instead of the generic “Hired Help” units, is assigned there, as well, which is kind of annoying, since I’m not sure why that’s the case. Another minor annoyance is that if Hired Help is running a store, you can’t actually pick what you want them to sell(I think it defaults to Tauns or something similar depending on the type of store, or maybe something random), and they can’t do anything if assigned to an Atelier. I can kind of excuse them not being able to work at Ateliers, since they most likely aren’t alchemists, but there’s really no reason you can’t pick what you want them to sell at shops.

All of the characters from the other Atelier games are said come from another world than Nelke’s, but I’m not exactly sure when they came from. Everyone has their appearance from their debut game, but seem have been brought in either after the events of those games or after their series of games(in the case of the ones with several games, like Arland, minus Lulua, Dusk and Mysterious).

Some tips for the game if you need them.

Gust has announced Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland DX, Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland DX, and Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland DX for PlayStation 4 and Switch. All three titles will launch both physically and digitally on September 20 in Japan for 4,800 yen each.

Each game will include the downloadable content originally released for that title. Copies of the physical version will include a download code for that game’s original soundtrack.

A 13,800 yen Atelier ~Alchemists of Arland 1-2-3~ DX Premium Box will also be available and include the following:

Story and Setting

The story follows Lulua, the daughter of the renowned Alchemist Rorolina Frixell, living in Arklys, a small town at the border of the Arland Republic. Lulua’s journey on becoming a sought after Alchemist will take her beyond her humble abode once she acquires the Alchemyriddle, a mysterious book that only Lulua can read it’s contents. The Alchemyriddle helps progress the story and provides extra quests for those players who want to go off the beaten path. At first, Lulua will be accompanied by her childhood friend, Eva Armster. As players progress through the story, more of Lulua’s friends will join her party and adventure.

Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland continues the story of the fan-favorite Arland Trilogy, set several years after the events of the Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland. Long time fans or those who are familiar with the series will instantly grab onto the nostalgic setting viewed through new eyes as Lulua. Although it’s not required to have played any of the previous games to really understand the story.

Lulua & Rifle

The game revolves around a combination of a quaint idyllic scenery and the interactions of the NPCs with Lulua. It deepens the immersion as players get closer with the super formal Refle or the saint-like Father Benon. Lulua lovable and comical personality combined with her mannerisms will warm their heart as they play.

Gameplay

Players control Lulua and her party in turn-based combat as they travel the world. You spend time fighting monsters and collecting materials. The game features a “slice of life” feel that is reinforced by certain “guilds/town request” locales that allows the player to undertake side quests and simply visiting the NPCs to promote interactions. These tasks range from finding and/or purchasing materials obtained from enemies or out in the land.

Eventually, after completing so many quests players can take a test so they may be allowed to take on more difficult side quests. Every so often after the player interacts with the NPCs they are rewarded with a new merchant or new items that can be purchased. I found this to be rewarding as there is incentive to getting close with the characters inhabiting the world; in addition to the quirky shenanigans they get into adds an air of lightheartedness that compliments the pastel bubblegum aesthetic the world possesses.

I did find the camera to be quite annoying when Lulua gets near walls or picks up a material in an awkward angle. It forces the camera to zoom in on the character or stutter as if its stuck on the wall. Players can remedy this by moving away from the problem area or manually zooming the camera.

Alchemyriddle

Collecting materials and participating in fights will allow players to add recipes to their book. These recipes will be in riddle form giving players some hints on how to decipher them. Make sure to head back to Wagon Atelier once the book icon glows or during the visual prompt to be decipher the recipe. Once it is decipher players will gain access to the recipe and may use it to synthesize new items.

Battles

Battles are your typical turn based fight, those with high speed will take action before those with slower speed actions. Players can select:

Attack: Standard regular attack

Skill: Use one of the character’s Active Skills; requires MP to use.

Item: Use an equipped item; Only alchemists have the option.

Defense: Guard against incoming attacks to reduce damage sustained until the next turn.

Switch: Replace an Attacker with a Follower.

Flee: Attempt to escape from the battle; may fail. Not all fights will allow you to escape.

During the start of your game, the only few options you have will be the very basic options that were stated above. Your options in battle will expand during normal story progression so make sure you read the tutorial of them and in case you forget use the in game guides to refresh your memory. It is imperative that players understand the basics to mastering the battle system. Battling monsters will provide experience for the party members so remember to battle often to level up the party.

Battling is simple enough to understand and once the in battle options opens up, it gives the players a lot of mechanics they can use to their advantage. It really helps utilize the full team as oppose to other games where you can only use 3 or 4 of them and having the rest of the team benched until a main party member is weak enough to swap out.

Gathering & Synthesizing

In the wild, players have to gather materials from select locations like trees, grass, bodies of water, rocks, and more. Gathered items are synthesized into new items by using the Wagon Atelier back any town. Gameplay revolves around gathering materials during exploration, synthesizing materials in town and progressing through the story. As players progress through the game, the Alchemyriddle will help them learn new synthesize recipes. Gathering takes a while to become accustomed to as players develop the proper tools to be able to gather at new locations or use new tools.

Synthesizing looks daunting at first glance and can definitely put the player out of their element. Pay attention to the tutorials of them and practice often. It really is quite straightforward after you try your hands at it several times so don’t be discouraged at first look.

Time

In this game, time passes whenever the player moves throughout the outside world, battle, gather, or synthesis. Time of day will impact which monsters will spawn in an area so be sure to take your time exploring and battling to see all the possible monsters there are in the game.

Audio and Visual

Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland features a great soundtrack that’s a nice compliment to the game’s setting. I find myself peacefully zoning out simply listening to the music while im playing. The opening and credit songs are worth just idling in these screens for the pleasure of listening to them; I let them play out a few times before starting my gaming session.

Graphically, the game delivers an delightful explosion of colors and warm palettes. I can lose myself as Lulua roaming around the quiet town. I personally really enjoy all the characters outfits and accessories that they wear. I felt that added an extra touch to really enhance the NPCs and they all look super cute.

I highly enjoyed exploring every new area and allowing the time to past so I see how the area looks in each time of day. Nothing beats a dawn and dusk image. The colors really pop and if you manage to get into a battle, so you can see it a bit better.

The graphics aren’t world ending amazing like some titles, however, the graphics have painted a pleasing picture allowing players to easily and quickly seeing the overall image. Like most things if you look more closely at them you’ll see the shortcomings. In addition, if you play attention to Lulua’s head adornment it clips into her character model in several places, which is a minor annoyance.

Final Thoughts

If you are a fan of pastel rich anime-esque world and character and JRPGs as a whole such as Death End Re;Quest, this is an special title that does merges the slice of life aspect with traditional questing and exploration. The characters are a nicely dressed and their voice acting as well as mannerisms will win you over. While the only slight drawbacks for me were the visual clippings and funky camera, they shouldn’t be majorly impactful to your enjoyment of the game.

Welcome to the Top Upcoming RPGs of May 2019! In this series we highlight the Top 5 RPGs for the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs of May 2019

As we make our way further into 2019, there are some new titles launching and ones that are expanding their world. Last month was home to a few older titles gaining new platforms, the top spot went to the Dragon’s Dogma which landed on the Switch. This month focuses on some tactical, strategy and medieval influences. So without further ado, let’s get into the month of May!

Honourable Mention – Kingdom Come: Deliverance A Woman’s Lot DLC

Release Date: May 28th Platform: PS4/Xbox One/PC Developer: Warhorse Studios Publisher: Deep Silver

The upcoming premium DLC A Woman’s Lot for the medieval action-RPG Kingdom Come Deliverance will allow players this time to take on the role of Theresa, who not only gains her own story that takes place before the attack, but gains access to weapons and even her own part of the map. Theresa‘s story although continues throughout the ambush of Skalitz, her priority in the aftermath is to take care of the wounded that have managed to flee from the event.

You will gain a new dog companion named Tinker. The dog has its own set of abilities which you can level up, including “sense of smell” this will help in sniffing out the enemies that cross your path. But don’t expect the dog to stay loyal if he isn’t treated well, the ability “obedience” will determine if your sidekick will continue to follow you. Theresa has her own ways to deal with the attackers that still appear around the outskirts of town, using stealth to sneak up behind them, killing them off and of course taking their loot. This isn’t the only way to tackle foes, as you can even send in your dog to attack them.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance A Woman’s Lot DLC releases on May 28th for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The Kingdom Come Deliverance Royal Edition which includes all downloadable content including A Woman’s Lot also releases May 28th.

5. Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland

Release Date: May 21st (US)/May 24th (EU) Platform: PS4/Switch Developer: Gust Publisher: KOEI Tecmo

Set several year’s after Aterlier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland, this title follows a heart-warming journey of a young Elemerulia Fryxel, an upbeat girl who studies the art of alchemy in order to follow the footsteps of her mother. Filling her shoes won’t be easy as she is the famous Rorona Fryxell who has already made a name for herself. Those who have followed the Arland series will run into old characters and rediscover the land of Arland which now looks different after some time has passed.

The game features new synthesis options, battle and exploration systems. Following the Arland style of gameplay mixed in with some elements from the Mysterious series. The battle system concentrates on turn-based actions where a party of five members comprised of two attackers and two support roles will fight against enemies. Those who are deemed attackers have a range of unique abilities, for example Eva can use a range shift skill which will extend her area of attack for a few turns. There is also a new interrupt ability for alchemists through a pre-equipped item which is consumed upon use.

Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland releases on Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch on May 21st in the US and May 24th in Europe.

4. Lapis x Labyrinth

Release Date: May 28th (NA)/May 31st (EU) Platform: PS4/Switch Developer: Nippon Ichi Software Publisher: NIS America

Players will join a quest for treasure-hunting for high-octane, where both danger and great rewards await. This unique dungeon crawler JRPG will combine 4 of your characters in a “Dango” tower, stacked to face enemies, allowing you to swap between your character classes unique abilities. Choose from 8 character classes and form your party. There are over 4,000 unique combinations to customise your team with, creative stacking mechanics can lead to synchronised attacks.

With risk comes great rewards, as you go deeper and deeper into each level, the rewards become greater. The goal is to defeat the foes that await you, destroying the crystals in order to receive your treasure. But, if you stay too long more enemies will ensue, spawning merciless invincible monsters so timing is key. Choose from 8 different character classes that all have their part to play including Hunter, Necromancer, Shielder, Maid (because I guess someone has to clean up the mess), Gunner, Witch, Destroyer and Bishop.

Lapis x Labyrinth releases on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on May 28th in North America and May 31st for Europe.

3. Vambrace: Cold Soul

Release Date: May 28th Platform: PC/Mac Developer: Devespresso Games Publisher: Headup

Originally set to release last month, Devespresso Games pushed back the release date for the month of May.

Vambrace: Cold Soul is a narrative driven rogue-like title that pits players against brutal challenges matched with deep strategy. Players take on the role of Evelia Lyric, the only human able to enter frost covered Icenaire, the cursed city. Now inhabited by it’s former residents that have been raised from the dead, these Wraiths plague the city. It is down to you to bring hope to this darkened land, as you bear the enchanted vambrace. Plan your missions underground and then head to the surface with your team to combat strange encounters.

Journeying into an epic fantasy adventure, this title spans over 7 chapters, captured in a beautiful hand-drawn artstyle. You can choose to take part in sub-quests to unlock character skins. Battle through perils with your party in turn-based combat, choosing from 5 different races which include humans, elves, foxier, dwarves or drow, and 10 different classes. Items can be crafted as well as armor, use materials gathered from your side-scrolling adventure. It’s down to your decisions, that will make or break your party’s survival.

Vambrace: Cold Soul will now release on PC on May 28th.

2. For the King

Release Date: May 7th/May 9th/May 10th (Xbox One) Platform: PS4/Switch/Xbox One Developer: IronOak Games Publisher: Curve Digital

Set in a world where the King is dead, killed by an unknown assailant in the once peaceful kingdom of Fahrul. Now the kingdom lays in chaos, the queen has been left to turn to the citizens of the Fahrul for help. This is where you and your band of adventurers must come to the rescue. Choose to battle it out together or split up your party to cover more ground. It will be up to your strategy as well as luck to see the return of peace to the kingdom.

For the King is a dungeon crawler that brings JRPG combat, strategy and rogue-like features. Use a mix of procedural maps, quests and events as you brave the elements as well as evil creatures. The gameplay focuses on turn-based combat with a unique slot system for attacks and unique abilities. Choose when to set up camp for the night, whether its a safe spot or to endure the wickedness that comes out at night.

For the King releases on Playstation 4 on May 7th, Nintendo Switch on May 9th and Xbox One on May 10th.

1. Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr

Release Date: May 20th (PC Early Access) Platform: PS4/Xbox One (June 4th) Developer: Zenimax Online Studios Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Taking the top spot this month is none other than Elder Scrolls Online as they are releasing their expansion which shakes things up a little with the return of dragons to Tamriel. Not only does the expansion bring a new area to explore, a host of characters old and new, challenging 12-player trial, new world quests featuring Dragon Attacks as well as a brand new class, the Necromancer.

Necromancer harnesses the power of bringing the dead back to do your bidding, the use of Gravelord Skills will imbue the dead with Frost, Fire or Lightning, raise hordes of the undead to attack your enemies. Bone Tyrant Skills will bend and break the dead to your will, creating a impenetrable wall and increase your own survivability. Living Death Skills draws powers of life and death, helps to restore your allies and resurrect your fallen comrades to bring them back to the battle.

This latest chapter introduces dragons back into Tamriel, awoken by Abnur Tharn‘s doing as well as queen Euraxia. The dragon Kaalgrontiid will bring a new threat to the home of the Khajiit. Discover the ancestral birthplace of the Khajiit, their ways, their culture and their history. Help them defend their land against the merciless attack of the dragon.
