“Sono Saki e” Random Thoughts (Review?)

Phew, this post is long-overdue. I’ve actually had this “review” sitting around in my drafts since May 30 but I wanted to wait till my physical copies arrived (unfortunately, my package took forever T_T). We have had multiple opportunities to listen to the tracks (or at least snippets of them) and of course I also listened to the digital album as soon as it became available. I’ll be honest with you, my initial reaction to the snippets and later the full tracks was rather lukewarm but in the past couple of weeks, most of the album has grown on me. So far my TOP 5 in order of their track listing are “Rapa Nui”, “標 (Shirushi)”, “希望(Kibou)”,“明日を夢見て歌う(Asu wo Yume Mite Utau)” and “Flag”.  Here are some random thoughts on the album as a whole and the individual songs ┗(•ˇ_ˇ•)→

Vocals: I’m not gonna write an analysis on Wakana’s vocals since I obviously lack the technical knowledge for that sort of stuff but I would still like to vent a little. In recent times, Wakana has talked a lot about how she is constantly refining her skills, working with a vocal coach and discovering new ways to use her voice, however, I fail to hear any real results of those efforts. I have to wonder if her vocal coach (or Takebe in his role as producer) are even giving any sort of effective advice because it certainly doesn’t seem like they do. The Japanese mindset probably keeps them from providing proper constructive criticism. This has always been an issue in the Japanese music industry but I am noticing it more now that Wakana, Keiko and Hikaru can no longer compensate for each other’s weaknesses. I don’t mean to bash or anything, you know I would never do that. I can still appreciate their solo vocals and for the most part I definitely enjoy Wakana’s vocals in this album but sometimes I get frustrated when it’s clear that the girls are not reaching their full potential or are using styles that are absolutely unflattering. I mean, who is telling Wakana (and Keiko for that matter) it’s a good idea to over-affect her voice or to sing in a register that is simply too high? Pretty sure this stuff is up to her so I guess it is a conscious choice and no one is guiding her in a better direction. I know for a fact that Wakana is capable of using a fuller, steadier voice but for some reason she often falls back on singing styles that don’t do anything for her and make her sound quite generic or borderline amateurish. It’s a shame...Rant over.

Visuals: The botanical and watery backgrounds/colours fit Wakana’s image perfectly. I wouldn’t say it’s a good match for the theme of the album but I don’t really mind. These are probably not my favourite looks for her but there are still some super lovely shots included in the photobook and lyric booklets. I originally thought all those light spots were a filter but they really used strings of light for the shoot. Not sure yet if I am a fan of the finished look.Something about it doesn’t really work for me.

Bonus material: No idea why they decided to add a DVD instead of a Blu-ray but I am just grateful we got footage from the Christmas live. It’s a solid concert with many good performances so I am happy there’s official footage. Too bad they cut the Christmas songs though, I remember enjoying them a lot. The audio tracks are a nice addition but I think instrumental versions of the album tracks would have been a nicer bonus. The exclusive fan club track is nothing to write home about, wish they had included footage from the after-talk instead or maybe the Christmas tracks.

Editions: As always, I appreciate that we get different booklets for every single edition. Makes it so much more fun and worthwhile to collect different editions. Overall I would day that all versions were reasonably priced for the content we got. And I am glad they once again decided to go for an LP-sized package with a big photobook. They look so good on my Kalafina showcase/shrine. Small nitpick: The quality of the large photobook isn’t what it used to be, it’s much thinner paper now T_T Makes it easier to scan though so I guess it’s not that bad.

Promotion: As far as the promotional campaign is concerned, I would say it’s sufficiently wide-spread on the media front but it feels a little lackluster in terms of in-store presence. Many Japanese fans have complained that the store promo for Wakana’s “Sono Saki e” wasn’t up to par with all the displays that were prepared for Keiko’s “Cutlery”. Thankfully we got the release events which added a bit of hype. Altogether, her performance in the Oricon Charts wasn’t too shabby either (#28) so the marketing team must have done something right. On a side note, I still very much appreciate the relatively high production value of Wakana’s solo works (especially compared to Hikaru’s and Keiko’s stuff). It’s clear that a lot of money is still invested in Wakana so YAY for that.

Overall thoughts: "Sono Saki e” has been a long time in the making so despite my best efforts, certain expectations have been building up. I know of course that getting my hopes up too high is a stupid thing to do because it will inevitably set me up for disappointment but I am only human and after three years of waiting, I was in a serious Wakana drought. However, now that the album is finally here, I feel a surprising sense of indifference (?) towards it. My reaction to Keiko’s latest album should have been indication enough but I think it’s becoming more and more obvious that I am suffering from a serious case of Kalafina-solo fatigue. It seems like I am steadily falling out of love with their solo music which makes me incredibly sad but I guess it was bound to happen at some point. I am not even saying that I dislike the album but there is just a lack of sparks I guess? Objectively speaking, I would say that Wakana’s 3rd album is quite good, I thoroughly enjoy around 60% of it and I’ve been listening to a lot of the songs on repeat. But I am just not as invested as I would like to be. On a side note, is it just me or does the album feel a little too rushed (despite its long production period)? I would have wanted the album to reflect the three years worth of thought and effort that were supposedly put into it but that’s honestly not the vibe I am getting here. I mean, they decided to include an instrumental of one of the tracks AND a literal copy-paste version of a previous album track, that just screams last minute decision to me. I guess it’s because the actual production didn’t start until much later so ultimately, there was a lot of rushing involved but still, it’s a shame.

M1. Butterfly Dream: I feel like everything has already been said about this. It’s fun with the visuals of the PV but without those, the song loses a lot of its charm for me. Even though it’s the leading track of the album, I find it a bit underwhelming, maybe because the melody isn’t really resonating with me? Also, not a huge fan of how Wakana seems to over-affect (if that’s the right word?) her voice during quite a few parts of the song (especially during the chorus) to sound cute/innocent. She sometimes does this for certain types of anisong covers but it’s honestly not the most flattering singing style in my opinion. I guess the outward “cuteness” of the vocals appeals to a wider audience so it’s not a bad thing per se. I mean, there must be a reason why they picked this as promo track for the album (Rating: 2.5/5) M2. Rapa Nui: Definitely the most exciting and refreshing track on the album. The Celtic(?) sound matches Wakana’s voice perfectly. Kinda sounds like something you would hear at a medieval festival. Reminds me a bit of Kalafina’s “Moonfesta” or Hikaru’s “Fili”. Based on the title, I would have expected the song to sound totally different but I am honestly not mad about how it turned out. It’s great that they used the Rapa Nui language for some lines, spices up the whole thing. I initially believed that the song could have benefited from a stronger chorus but by now I’m literally obsessed with it, can’t get the melody out of my head :P Some of those ultra-high notes don’t sound pleasant to my ears but it’s not on a level where it takes away from my enjoyment. Contemplated taking half a point off for it but at the end of the day, it’s not worth it. It’s such a superb track (Rating: 5/5) M3. 標 (Shirushi): Sometimes this song doesn’t really affect me all that much and other times it makes me cry like a baby (especially when Wakana sings “この先も力に歌うから”). In many ways, it reminds me of “Ai no Hana” which has a similar theme and is one of my favourite tracks from Wakana’s first album but I need to hear it live to get the full experience. The same is the case for “Shirushi”. And I also have to be in the right mood for it. I am not 100% sold on the melody but Wakana’s vocals are gorgeous and the emotion she puts into her singing is just out of this world. On top of that, we have beautiful lyrics and a precious backstory, I can’t help but give this song a high rating (Rating: 4/5) M4. 希望 (Kibou): With the exception of “Rapa Nui” this is probably the only track that instantly clicked with me. Even when we just got a snippet of it, I immediately fell in love. The melody is just the right amount of cheesy in a good way, it hits me right in the feels. I think it comes closest to a standard power ballad or a 90s pop ballad. I am a huge sucker for those and it is obviously the type of song I love to hear from Wakana. Is it just me though or could Wakana have used a more flattering singing style for the chorus? She is going very high and it tends to sound a bit strained. For me, this is on the very edge of sounding screechy, a little higher, a little flatter and I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it. It’s clearly a challenging track but not necessarily something that Wakana can’t handle imo. Really curious how she will be handling those parts during a live performance. Hopefully she can tweak her style a bit to make it more suitable for the song. Another tiny nitpick is the bland bridge, I wish it had a little more oomph, it’s neither here nor there but oh well, I am so smitten with this song that I can’t really focus on any of the negative aspects (Rating: 4.5/5) M5. 殻 (Kara): Who thought it was a good idea to do a “Tsubasa 2.0.”? I really wish they would have come up with something else. They had more than enough time to look into other options. I understand the intention of course, “Tsubasa” is solid and highlights some of the grittier parts of Wakana’s voice but that doesn’t warrant a blatant rip-off. Enough complaining though, I feel like I am way too harsh on “Kara”. On its own merits, it’s actually quite fun and yeah, just like its predecessor it works flawlessly to highlight Wakana’s voice in a different way, I like her more feisty singing style. Objectively speaking, I really can’t fault this song but it still doesn’t quite hit the spot for me. Thankfully, Wakana’s singing makes up for it (Rating: 3.5/5) M6. そのさきへ(Sono Saki e)～Interlude～: The melody is not striking enough. I am usually a sucker for a good instrumental piece but this one falls a little flat unfortunately. Wakana keeps saying that she cried when she first listened to the demo but I really wonder why...However, I will have to say that the gorgeous piano playing of this interlude does appeal to me more than the melody in the normal version of the song (Rating: 2.5/5) M7. KEMONO feat.清塚信也: I’ve said it before and I will say it again, every cell in my body is rejecting this type of song. I know that’s a me-problem and I feel horrible judging Wakana’s work based on such a personal preference.This reminds me way too much of some of Keiko’s city-pop (or whatever) tracks. The singing is too fast, there is no proper flow, the melody is all over the place, it’s just outright chaotic. I am sure there are people who can appreciate this new experimental style but I am unfortunately not one of them. I generally don’t like giving low ratings but it is how it is, please know that this is purely subjective (Rating: 1/5) M8. 明日を夢見て歌う(Asu wo Yume Mite Utau): The melody right at the beginning and sprinkled in-between the verses is what initially attracted me to the song, so pretty. However, the rest of the song didn’t leave a huge impression when I first heard it during the Christmas concert. I remember I compared it to “Boku Dake no Stage” because it was also composed by Takebe and I thought it was similarly bland. I realise now that this was a very unfair comparison because those songs have absolutely nothing in common. “Asu wo Yume Mite Utau” is much better imo and aligns more with my preferences in terms of music style. Maybe a comparison to “Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni” would have been better even though Takebe didn’t compose that one... Anyways, after letting the song marinate for a while, I’ve surprisingly come to love “Asu wo Yume Mite Utau”. I’d even go as far as to say it has become one of my favourite tracks from the album. The arrangement is lovely and so are the lyrics. Also adore Wakana’s singing here (Rating: 4/5) M9. Flag: This is probably the most Kalafina/FictionJunction-esque track on the entire album so I understand why it is so popular among YK/Kalafina fans. Personally, I have never been the biggest fan of YK’s more generic anisongs so this track initially didn’t impress me all that much, it was just okay for me, nothing too outstanding. But after hearing it performed live multiple times, it has significantly grown on me. It’s a really solid song and it works perfectly with Wakana’s voice. Even though it might not be the type of music I naturally gravitate towards, it’s still a banger. Especially when you take the Kalafina nostalgia into account. Fun fact, the most recent version with Sakurada has made me add 0.5 points to my initial rating, it was just so good (Rating: 4/5).  M10. そのさきへ (Sono Saki e): Ughhh, I really wanted to love this song but so far my attempts have all failed. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to get into it. I mean, there must be something to love about it when I hear Wakana rave about the demo tape as if it were the best thing since sliced bread. What exactly is it about the melody that made her cry so much? It still baffles me that this was written by the same person who was responsible for “Kinmokusei” which I absolutely adore. There are some tiny similarities but all in all, “Sono Saki e” feels rather uninspired in comparison to “Kinmokusei”, at least in my opinion. Hearing it live during the release event has also not done anything to make me appreciate the song more. I am afraid it is a lost cause... (Rating: 2/5) M11. あとひとつ (Ato Hitotsu): Nothing much to say here aside from the fact that I adore this song and I am really glad that it’s finally included in an official release. I prefer to hear it live but the studio recording is surprisingly touching too. So understated and yet so charming. I like how Wakana keeps referring to it as prayer, it’s a fitting description. Perfect delivery, as always (Rating: 5/5)

Jikook were wearing matching earrings in Run today. Guess they bought a pair & split it and each wore one or they own the same pair and wore them coincidentally at the same time. Nothing big, just another cute moment of them matching. Speaking of matching, when Jikook wore those matching gold & black & gold & yellow wedding bands, what happened to that footage? Do they every plan on releasing it? We know they were doing stuff together a group, but we only got snippets & never the actual footage.

REGARDLESS. What do you mean what happened to the footage? This wasn't a documentary released or much of anything. The Instagram clips and stuff posted WAS it unfortunately. The gold band behind footage came from Dispatch D'FESTA shooting clips. They posted it on their Instagram and some on youtube shorts. The rest was paid content only available AT the exhibition, stages, etc.

D'FESTA was Dispatch putting on a Kpop festival to celebrate their anniversary and BTS was part of the lineup. BTS pre-recorded all of their segments. And what we get video wise is either what Dispatch released as teasers or what ARMYS who paid for tickets and went filmed for us and shared the BTS cuts of stuff there and so video quality was, well it's just okay, its what we get when we steal content for free basically. Lol but Still wonderful!

My apologies for coming to your inbox out of the blue, but I know you are a great lover of our good friend Jonathan Harker. As such, I thought you might enjoy the knowledge that our lad was a user of the first personal camera by the brand name Kodak in today's entry to take pictures of the Carfax estate. I learned that it was only 10 years before the book was published that first Kodak cameras were sold to the public, and I hadn't caught that "Kodak" was in reference to the camera brand my first time through. With all this in mind though, it begs the question if he ever used it to take pictures of Mina?

I'm sure he did post-canon at least! In the LXGF server we love to talk about Jonathan's photobook and what he'd put in it, which is a lot of me linking old cheesy cat photos from catsofyore.

It's very possible that given he's a newly-minted solicitor saving up for his wedding that the camera is actually work-specific and he wouldn't be free to take personal pictures with it, but once he has a living of his own? EVERYONE GET IN THE PHOTO and also bring the cats

maybe I’m being overly pessimistic, but I feel like I have to put down these thoughts, and just let them be.

I feel like dcc is making a very clear choice of what kind of people they want to attract and maintain to support dc, from the content they’ve shifted to on their notes, to now this new app where you pay a subscription fee to “chat” (because you don’t even actually chat with them since they apparently see all fans messages like a group chat??) privately with the members... yes capitalism and what not, but there’s a lot of other options dcc could go for (*cough* reprinting albums, hell even investing on an app like superstar sm but for dc only, even if it’s a big investment at first would totally pay itself off and profit given the time), than this type of thing that does nothing but feed even more delusional fans.

also while it’s cool dcc wants to collaborate with smaller companies to also help them grow (even tho a lot of stuff has been shady as fuck but whatever), they kinda need to actually look at what the big companies do right and idk try to copy the things they do right? how is it possible that there’s been no brand deals, or mc spots, or even acting opportunities for some of them? I’m not saying these opportunities are easy to come by, but at this point they’re a six year old group, and it doesn’t feel like any of them have enough experience to have a career outside of it? like what’s going to happen to them when inadvertently they can’t pull comebacks or go on tours as often and tirelessly as they do now? like yeah it’s good to live in the moment but dcc really needs to start working towards their future too.

and honestly since deja vu that dc have been losing their signature horror concept and I get that things can’t stay the same forever or it gets stagnate, but for a group that was so praised during nightmare era for their narrative and world building, it really sucks that we haven’t had that built properly since then. I gave the benefit of the doubt for dystopia era because it was the first since nightmare and it could just be that they needed time to adjust (music wise the concept was pretty solid for scream and boca at least but there really wasn’t much of a narrative on the mvs like nightmare era had), but apocalypse era is being even messier. from where I’m standing it feels like dcc doesn’t really care anymore about giving them interesting concepts because they know the fandom is gonna buy into it regardless. but it sucks that even on simple things like photobooks and season’s greetings, the horror concept that set them apart from other groups just isn’t present anymore. even if they kept the lighter and fun versions, the og fandom at least are still people who appreciate darker concepts so I don’t get why they’ve completely started to dismiss that.

it’s just getting tiring for me. I love their music, and I think I’ll definitely keep coming back to see what they’ve released, but everything else genuinely isn’t fun anymore. and it hasn’t been fun for a while now. I still care a lot about the girls and dc, reason why things being like this bothers me so much, but I also don’t think dcc will change anything in the future and actually do something right so

#also yeah maison had a cool concept as a song itself but honestly the mv could've actually been interesting and it's just... not #i wont even talk abt vision #not to mention how toxic this fandom has turned overall and how little I identify with it :/ #thankfully not on here - ppl here are generally really nice #but in general 💀 #anyway just some thoughts bc tbh im a little tired of pretending that im ok with whats going on and these changes #i dont rly have hope that dcc will change anything and improve - on the contrary I think things will just keep on getting worse for the #fandom but who knows #jt

Flake's podcast - Gay and lesbian

The biggest force in life and the only one Flake respects (apart from his wife) is Nature. And the biggest drive in Nature is Sex, big parts of life are about sex, thinking about sex, sex to reproduce, and to prevent to many people being born, Nature also created same-sex so it's completely natural for a man to love a man and woman to love a woman. That is the intro to this podcast, and Flake plays songs about, or by, gay or lesbian artists, some of whom are well known to be gay, some who had to hide it for a long time (and some, to be honest, i think Flake is 'outing' without really knowing 🍀 but as he sees homosexuality as something completely normal, he doesn't have a problem with that).

As a sidenote he also mentions some of his favorite things:

Completely fitting in the theme at 1h40 Flake plays the Rammstein song 'Mann gegen Mann' which to the band is called 'Schwuler' (but their Swedish producer Mann gegen Mann (Man against man) sounded better, Flake thinks it should at least have been Mann mit Mann (Man with man)), the songtitle comes from the Family Values Tour in the US which Rammstein did with a.o. Korn, Korn had a song 'Faget', and Rammstein told them it meant 'Schwuler' in German. They heard it so often at the tour that they made a song about it.

But the funnest anecdote (especially for the fanfic-inclined among us) is at 1h02, where Flake talks about when Rammstein records an album, they retreat to a studio and for three weeks they do everything together: make music, eat together, sit down after work, watch tv, and they all get really familiar. When hanging out together they regularly drop a theme and talk about each one's experience with it, often it turns out that a theme that one thought they had only experienced themselves, others know about as well. Well, one night the topic 'Homo erotic experience' was brought to the table, and as it turned out, the entire band had their experience with that...either going home with someone after a party , or when they were at school with a friend... ❤️ Most people have both sides in them, sometimes inclined a bit more to one side, sometimes to the other, and Flake also occassionally is attracted, to a guy, for instance in a movie.

He knows what it's like to get a warm feeling in his heart ❤️

PS. because of that anecdote, I'm not going to complain that he completely fails to acknowledge Adam Lambert is singing in Queen 😄 and that he isn't playing Freddie Mercury's boyfriend in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' movie (or maybe i am in the wrong there 😊)

okay y’all good news, my unforgiven albums finally shipped. bad news, it’s gonna be a while because they gotta go to Australia first since that’s the only way I could get the Global shop set bonuses. No way was I gonna settle for a “heat revealing postcard” or whatever it was the USA shop was giving out, what do they think I am, an amateur? Gimmie the PC sets, the magnets, the holographic photo frame, and the acrylic photocard frame for god’s sake! Weverse and Hybe better fix that nonsense for the next cb though, this is unsustainable.

You know what else they better fix? These boring photobook concepts. Literally none of these are matching up to Blue Chypre, Frozen Aquamarine, and/or Iridescent Opal. Yes I’m a horse girl so I love amber and rose is kinda neat, but not previous concept level and sage is just boring. If I wanted a fashion catalogue I’d buy a fashion catalogue. Same for the compact versions but I didn’t like those last time anyway. At least this time we get postcards and PCs that match the girls’ album versions.

An open farewell letter to "idol Habu Mizuho"

I first met Habu-chan in 2017, when Keyakizaka46 had just released Kaze ni Fukarete mo. However, the first MV I saw was Fukyouwaon. 

When I really started following Keyaki, Habu and Neru were my favorite members. The people who were able to make me smile during one of the most tense periods of my life.

The love I felt for both of them turned out to be the same, so even though the term "kami oshi" can be summed up as a single person, I treated Habu and Neru as my kamis.

In 2019, when Neru-chan graduated, Habu-chan officially became my kami oshi. A position she still holds today, even after new members joined and I met other groups in the meantime.

I tried to find another idol to whom I could share my time, dedication, and love, but Habu-chan was unbeatable.

Over time, I became more and more obsessed with Habu (in a good and healthy way). Something about Habu-chan enchanted me in a way that no other idol had been able to before. 

I believe there were several reasons for this... 

One of them is the fact that we're the same age, we were both born in 1997 (I'm a month older ☺). 

Another may have been their physical appearance and personality. 

Habu has several physical aspects that particularly caught my eye: her hair (at the time I knew her best, it was mid-length), her height, her hands, and her neck (which I don't even accept is her least favorite part of her body). And over time, Habu became an extremely beautiful woman. In my eyes, she looked like a goddess sculpted by a superior divine force lol. Her personality was also an important point: Habu conveyed to me an energy of being someone extremely kind, cheerful, and positive; and this was confirmed over the time I spent being her fan. With each passing moment, I really realized that Habu was everything I had imagined. Confirmation of this came from her blogs, mobames, magazine, and radio interviews, which were corroborated by statements from Keyaki/Saku members, other co-workers, MCs, the habu oshi who took part in handshakes and meguris, etc. Everyone reaffirmed that Habu was an incredible person. 

One characteristic that I also came to admire a lot about her was Habu's ability to be good with words. Her iconic phrases (the funniest possible) and others full of meaning delighted me even more. 

But actually, I think what made my bond as a fan even stronger was that I followed Habu's growth and development as an idol.

She started to grow a lot as soon as she took part in the Girls Award (back in 2016, before I knew her), followed by her entry as an MC on radio shows (thanks to Chokotto yattemasu and Gochaten), as an MC in variety shows, taking part in Zambi's stage play, among other external activities associated with the group.

However I believe that her evolution as a model has been fundamental in making Habu-chan who she is today. Many thanks to JJ and CLASSY for giving her this opportunity and for signing her as an exclusive model in 2017 and 2021 respectively.

With this modeling career, Habu was the 1st member of the group to open an Instagram account, allowing the other members to also have this opportunity to interact more with fans, as well as promote the group.

Another pioneering move was Habu being the first member to have a fashion photobook, a departure from the usual standards for Sakamichi idols. And that's a story I really like because only I know how happy I was with "Destination" and the fact that it was exactly the kind of photobook I had always envisioned for her.

In fact, Habu-chan was a positive influence on me in the world of fashion. I've changed some habits and ways of dressing. I hope to continue following your fashion tips, Habu-sensei!

I could spend days and days telling you why Habu Mizuho is an exceptional idol. But unfortunately, the day of her graduation has arrived.

I've met many incredible people in the time I've been following her as an idol: Japanese ハブライバー (I could list several who have been super kind to me, but especially Masayo-san who was the person I had the most contact with during this time and who was VERY kind and helpful to me); ハブライバー from other countries and people who weren't even ハブライバー, but who supported Habu. I'm also grateful to have bonded with many different people, even though they live in different countries.

Now, seeing anything from Sakurazaka46 without Habu Mizuho will leave me with a huge feeling of emptiness.

I'm not sure yet how my relationship with the group will be after Habu's graduation. That's something I still can't answer...

But I'm very proud of the woman Habu-chan has become. 

I know that whatever path you take now, you will be successful and will have the full support of your fans. 

All I can do now is say thank you. 

I'm grateful for all the happy moments you've given me during your career as an idol.

I know I wasn't as "committed" a fan as other fans. I tried to do my best to support her within my capacity and my reality. I could have been a much better fan... But I hope that somehow you know that you have a fan in Brazil who has always and will always hope that only good things happen in your life.

Thank you so much for coming into my life.

Part Two.

So now I am going to talk about something a little more meaty...Being homosexual in a heterosexual culture.

In these first years, we see how manly masculine males they were all trying to be. Tough men. Boy in Luv men. Stop-playing-with-me-if-you-lose-me-its-your-loss men (lets roll our eyes together 1-2-3 go). Hip hop and rap culture was (and still is) a heterosexual/misogynistic culture. Yet we know Namjoon was already a LGBTQ supporter when he helped a BigHit girl group write a pro-LGBTQ song before BTS’ debut. How to reconcile that with this music genre? Interesting to say the least. So here are our manly men in this manly man k-pop hip hop genre. And here we have Jungkookie and Jiminie who don’t know they will become our muscle bunny and chimchim. Boy in Luv MV released February 11 2014.

As far as BTS music and performances, they knew how to appeal to their fans. They obviously followed the k-pop idol formula in the beginning. Heterosexuality was a given. They put out a lot of songs appealing directly to “Miss Right.” The songs/lyrics and performances very noticeably targeted young female audiences. Example: War of Hormone...the lyrics... omg...cringe... and very heterosexual of them (reading the lyrics again...cringe again...sort of a blessing I didn’t look up the English translation the first time I heard it, right?). That being said, it is still one of my favorite MV’s, what can I say? Sorry? hahahaha! I love them in all their unabashed “bad” boyishness acting in this video. War of Hormone MV released October 2014.

This live performance of WoH is adorable, cheesy, and Jimin’s tongue again.

Setting aside the lyrics and intent of the song, I LOVE THE CHOREOGRAPHY! STOP JUDGING ME!

But that is them performing. That is their idol persona. That is their work. It’s called acting. It is not necessarily their real life personality. Some people have difficulty separating fact from fiction (looking at you antis, mantis, trolls, haters and cult people...)

When not working, which was hardly ever, they are seven, healthy, very fit, good looking, rowdy young men who pursued their various interests. They were surrounded by the idol industry with more physically fit and good looking humans. Even the security dudes are good looking. The whole industry is a conundrum with its sexually charged visuals yet the wholesome way idols are expected to live or at least be perceived to live. Korean societal norms are much more conservative, polite and reserved than us here in the U.S....(incidentally, BTS seemed to shuck off some of this idol identity but then they backtracked a little in some ways, ah another blog post...maybe someday.) 

So as it happens, during off hours...you can only play so many video games right?... read so many books... be so pure... (haha they are not pure little innocents) ... young men being young men (a few of them teenagers and fresh out of puberty), hormones exist and do their thing on your body and your mind and I suspect they did what you do to relieve that. Masturbation happens. And stuff...

In 2015, they began doing V Lives and the precursor to Run BTS. Their V Lives were very short, sometimes only a minute long, done very quickly while waiting at the airport or waiting their turn in the makeup chair before a concert. Even during these we get a brief glimpse at the relationship dynamics.

April 2015: We are still sorta in the manly men mode Officer Kuk and Office Worker Jimin during the Dope MV. 

July 2015: behind clip for NOW3, a photobook, that was shot in Chicago:

The stylists depart from the dark hip hop style and go for cotton candy colors. The eye make up was amazing, especially Jimin’s. I promise you, the regular people on the street in 2015 Chicago thought “look at those cute gay boys taking photos...”

August 2015: 

Just wrapping up Brazil and on to Chile, South America, Jungkook says to Jimin: “Chile sounds like you want to hit me in Korean...” and Jimin ducking his head shyly and giggling? um, ok? V Live from August 1, 2015:

Tae and Hobi: “Jungkook, Jimin needs a birthday spanking”...things escalated quickly and the V Live was ended abruptly, um, excuse me? again, what was that? HAHAHAHAH! V Live from October 18, 2015:

Do I think it was possible that they ever “dated” female staff? Mmmm probably not? Jungkook was too young and too shy, even if he did have thoughts of wanting to date a girl. I know Jungkook has said he had a “girlfriend” but broke it off when they didn’t speak for a long time. Can we really consider that a real relationship when he was what? 14 or 15 years old or younger? No. Those were all words from a very young person who possibly believed it counted as a relationship as well as thinking that was what he was supposed to say.

But honestly, I don’t think there was much going on with any attempts of either of them dating other people back then because of how ambitious and committed to their work they were. Flirt maybe, but date? Nah. How the fuck are you supposed to “date” when you are working from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep, if you even get to sleep? From what I understand, even the staff are worked to the bone. And possibly non-disclosure stuff, I don’t know what the labor laws are in Korea, if there are non-disclosure agreements then that would prohibit dilly dallying with staff. Yeah, naw, staff mingling wasn’t a thing.

In 2016 they were working on the Wings album. Between jacket photoshoots and MV shoots they are still touring. The first Bon Voyage series airs the summer of 2016 (filmed months prior).

July 2016 we get the Osaka V Lives. I watched Tae’s V Live the day before Jimin’s and I understand what everyone is theorizing but there really is no concrete evidence that Jimin was hiding in the bathroom of JK’s room...except that Jimin seemed perturbed at Tae the next day during his V Live. They win a major award for their Wings album in November and it’s obvious that they are very overwhelmed by it.

By the end of 2016 we get this chaotic December 15, 2016, V Live with the selfie Jungkook threatens to post to Twitter:

And then we get this February 28, 2017 Run BTS ep. 12...I know it was “acting” in a skit but y’all...the rough play and then JK slinging Jimin over his shoulder and the butt slap... the heavy flirting that was supposedly “ad libbed” was just...beyond words... it was just all too easy for them. Jimin and Jungkook’s segment begins at 8:41. This is what I mean by “chemistry.” They have it:

Their entire segment of that Run episode had me laughing so hard. 

I’ve said before, I am pretty sure they crossed that line with each other at some point. Exactly when? We’ll never know but why wouldn’t they go with the flow and take that leap? Because they aren’t gay? Yeah, right. 

Doesn’t matter if you are straight, gay, bi, or any other color/flavor of the rainbow... we know about sexual urges and libido and how the human body (and mind) works when one is horny. When and where though is really none of our business. We don’t know that. Regardless, I believe Something happened with a capital Sex with each other.  Alcohol may have been in the mix. I am not gonna venture much farther than that because I am talking about real people but when in the moment, you can get carried away even if you didn’t intend to. I think it’s possible this happened even if they are straight up straight. Which I don’t think they are. But sex is sex and it happened in some form. 

And in THAT process, they acted upon/confirmed things they either already knew about themselves or revelations occurred. I think in Jimin’s case it could have been more of a revelation. He’s stated some things that make me think he wasn’t really being true to himself at first. Maybe there was a lot of conflict and rejection before there was acceptance....he has said things that make me think this. This phase of self-discovery started and eventually Jimin blossomed into the Jimin we know. Thank God and Jesus and Dionysus.

Disclaimer #1: I am not gay. Surprise, surprise. Though I do appreciate the naked human body of any gender but I suppose that could be my artist’s eye I see the world with. Does looking at a naked female body turn me on? Perhaps. What does that make me? It makes me a horndog just like these guys. Back to the topic at hand. That’s the beauty of me sitting here pondering after watching 35,320 hours of BTS content. Something happened, that’s all I know!

So here we are, late 2017. These two Busan boys debut together and are now doing stuff several years later that they probably never thought in a million years they would be doing. Things were snowballing from 2016 through 2017... gaining momentum, not just their careers but whatever it was happening between these two.

jungkook: initially, my bias in bts was yoongi, but i had taken a year break from bts due to some things happening in my life at the time. when i returned, jungkook truly stole my heart. i considered myself yoongi biased when i made my return but god… every time i looked at jungkook, it's like he was reaching out to me. from that moment, i knew i was doomed. i'm in love with him. i love the way his big, doe eyes grow wide and sparkle like stars in the night sky, i love when he spaces out in the middle of nowhere (i want to pick his brain to know what gets him in such a trance), i love his pretty nose scrunches when he's smiling. i love how he time and time again shows how much he loves armys (he tattooed us on his hand!!!!) and his hyungs!!! how he puts his 110% into everything that he does makes me want to work harder/become a better person myself. his competitiveness is also very endearing to me. the man simply hates losing and i respect that!! like idk man, he's just so good, so talented. in the famous words of kim taehyung, "the best voice in korea as far as i'm concerned." taehyung: this man creeped up on me when i least expected it. he slithered into my heart, created a home out of it, and has resided there since. i really knew taehyung became my 2nd ult when i saw a picture of him smiling on my tline only to burst into tears (jvngoo can vouch for this, she was on the phone with me when it happened). seeing taehyung happy makes me teary eyed for the simple fact that happiness looks good on him. he deserves everything good in the world!!! i have this need to protect him because i do feel like a couple of people misunderstand him due to his resting facial expression and how he's grown more quieter than when he was younger. taehyung is SUPER sweet, caring, and thoughtful. an actual angel. i hate when anyone believes otherwise. his love and respect for his work, his members, his fans (HE CREATED BORAHAE!!! ✦ my first bias: technically, probably mark because he was the first nct member i learned about, but it quickly became taeyong after i actually started getting into nct, and taeyong was my bias for the first three or so months of being an nctzen!

✦ my current bias(es): haechan! he is my ult, i love him so very much. probably slightly too parasocially attached to him but i'm not going to worry about it lol...

✦ my album and/or era ranking (or favorite of each): 127 has so many albums, and i decided to write my reasoning behind each one...bear with me... from favorite to least favorite:

Cherry Bomb: this is a masterpiece of an album. Cherry Bomb is SUCH a good song, the music video has that artistic scrappy Neo identity, the styling is so cool in my opinion, and the album is full of great songs. When i think of nct 127 this the era i think of.

We Are Superhuman: okay, i just personally love this album. Superhuman was what made me an nctzen. I feel so fond of it, it's my baby. Superhuman and Highway to Heaven are such feel-good songs! And I love the concept/styling/photobook.

Limitless: Limitless is a song that's really grown on me recently. The "Rough vers. MV" was truly ahead of its time. The styling was... questionable lol. Poor haechan's hair! But this album also gave me Back 2 U, which is maybe the best 127 b-side ever.

Regulate (Simon Says): I love Simon Says, it was another early favorite of mine in my baby nctzen days. The styling for this mv was immaculate, I still dream about yuta's grey plaid skirt thing and the vans shoelaces tied around the ankles.

Loveholic (Gimme Gimme): Maybe it's because I got into nct in this era, but loveholic is really special to me. The concepts for the photobook really speak to me (especially the rain one, but i also find the bright green and orange color scheme of the album cover sooo satisfying) and 'right now', the last song on the album, is my ultimate favorite 127 b-side, i almost feel a little possessive over it >.< the gimme gimme mv was a little lacking but i like the song itself!

Chain: the chain music video!! omg. Also the b-sides dreaming and 100 are such hidden gems. I also really vibed with the styling (shout out to the stylists for giving taeil that sexy haircut lol). 127's japanese releases hit different for me.

Neo Zone: I mean... neo zone is iconic. i feel like i should love it more than i do? kick it is a banger, the mv is soooo well executed, i love mullet hyuck and mark's stripey hair, i love the concept and outfits, and the photobook is crammed full of really cute photos... but there's something about it that i don't feel as nostalgic or lovey about compared to the albums i ranked above it. i think most of the b-sides feel slightly bland to me? and sometimes i feel like neo zone was a little too perfected, like it lacks some of that original 127 crunchy absurdity.

Neo Zone: The Final Round (Punch): I actually am fond of Punch, she's underrated imo. there's something about that song that i find really satisfying. the styling isn't anything to write home about, but it works well in the context of the concept.

Regular-Irregular: Confession...I don't really like Regular *winces*. i'm too anti-capitalist for it lol! but that said, the music video is delicious. And the song itself is really catchy... if i look past the lyrics. although... maybe the lyrics are supposed to provide a negative commentary on our money-obsessed culture?? are they that deep?? i'll have to think about this...

Sticker: When this album came out i remember liking it a lot. But as time has gone on, it's gotten more boring for me. The song and music video weren't bad objectively, but i feel like it marked a significant shift in 127's artistic voice, a change i didn't really want... although shout out to the seoul city version of the photobook, which i still think is gorgeoussssss

Awaken: I cannot get through Wakey-wakey. it is SO grating to my years lol. however! i am obsessed with ‘end-to-start’, the outro song of the album. i get chills every time mark says “the origin will begin”. i’m also giving it bonus points because i like the way haechan was styled :P

2 Baddies: The biggest reason why this album is so low is that i really don’t like most of the songs on the album. For the title track, the song and mv aren’t terrible. i like that it’s playful, i really enjoy jaehyun’s rap, and the styling is really cool! but... idk, there’s just something about the whole thing that makes me disappointed, like i feel like it had potential to be better.

Fire Truck: hey, i guess ranking their debut album last means they’ve come a long ways?? I don’t really care for any of the songs on this album. the fire truck music video was... interesting... i do love the styling (i might be the only one who does, but i actually sincerely do!), and i like the choreography, but that’s about it.

✦ how i got into them: at the time i was really into shinee, and i remember watching this mashup and i was blown away by superhuman, and that was the beginning! but i didn’t quite consider myself an nctzen then. i think a month or so later when i was leaving for an internship and i was really anxious, i started listening to all the 127 title tracks to help me feel strong and tough and i think that’s when i really formed an emotional connection to 127 itself and got to know the members better.

✦ which member would be my best friend: oh god, this is hard because i’d want to be friends with all of them! i think personality-wise, i’d probably get along the best with taeyong. i see a lot of myself in him.

✦ something i associate with them (or with a bias/any member): with 127 as a group: neon colors, leather fingerless gloves, messy hair, science fiction. with taeyong: fish, furiously scribbling in a notebook, the subway/metro. with haechan: falling asleep with your head on someone’s shoulder, scuffed favorite sneakers, lambs and baby goats, the concepts of soulmates and fate, the golden hour.

Omg yeah fallin' flower was truly impeccable, I really wish we got more like it. And I get what you mean about home;run! They're such musical theatre nerds that the concept for home;run made almost too much sense for them haha. I'm personally a sucker for darker concepts like fear, getting closer, and 24h and hope they'll try something like that again in the future :) A dark academia style like they had for the social club photobooks would be awesome too! hmmm I'm not a huge fan of dark concepts in general, fear is probably my least favourite concept they tried (still really cool though ahah), but I did loooove getting closer! the song is amazing and so is the choreo (probably one of my favourite as well)

I usually like dark concepts when they are a bit quirky (not sure if it's the right word ahah my brain can't think in english today), something like red velvet's peek-a-boo or really bad boy, or shinee's married to the music, you know? not sure if it would suit seventeen though ahah but yeah, I totally agree with the dark academia style! they should try something like that for a comeback

I do own a few albums. the first albums I bought were you made my day and you made my dawn (although I "lost" them when I moved back home after uni, they are probably in a box in my parents' basement), then I have two versions of heng:garae (basically destroyed them as you could create your own album, I cut all the pages and mixed them up and made collages with old magazines ahah), then I bought face the sun (carat version because it was super cute) and sector 17 (new beginning version because I'm a sucker for pretty men with flowers). also tmi, I always pull joshua's photocard ahah

I didn't buy the others because either I didn't like the design, the concept or there were too many versions and couldn't choose the one I wanted. however, I would like to own boys be (love the cover and the concept) and al1 (for sentimental reasons). also not an album, but I would like to buy their social club photobook, I decided too late that I wanted it and now I can't find it anywhere ahah

hmmm another hard question, I think my favourite painter is probably amedeo modigliani, there’s just something about his portraits that fascinates me. I also like impressionism in general, artists like monet, renoir, degas, cezanne, etc. last week I also went to an exhibition of niki de saint phalle and it was amazing, we have one of her sculptures in my hometown so I always felt quite attached to her work. I also adore the sculptures of alberto giacometti! and toulouse-lautrec as well, my parents have one of his sketches at home and it’s one of my favourite pieces they have at home. ooh and george grosz, I wrote my high school thesis on some of his works

and for flowers, I think my favourites are forget-me-nots, but I love daises, sunflowers, primroses, dahlias, tulips, poppies and daffodils too

!!!!!!!!!!!! season 2 hideout the new day we step into i love you i miss you you will always and forever be the one. season 2 she's everything to me just overall... i remember playing her literally all the time like i'd be cooking i wld put her on i was on call with my best friend? yeah that's also a perfect time to play season 2 in the background. she's so important to me. i listened to flame an insane amount of times. and i haven't gotten tired of her. she's everything to me. sunrise and realize are SUCH important songs like technically realize is the one that's this album's hideout song (and thus my favourite, as the trend goes with stay and call my name), but sunrise is like. almost one? like the vibe's there, u know... and they're both two of my most favouritestest vity songs (alongside the other hideout songs n vvv). realize is also brina's song so that must mean something right. believer is simply INSANE and also i quote her everyday . ppl might not realize this but every single time that i say that i believe in someone, she's playing in my head. and i believe in you!!!!!! you know. like. im your believer. and all that. breathing is their best ballad it sounds so nice. i admittedly like ohh ahh & hot air balloon the least but they're still very important !! they're fun, i don't dislike them, and they're playing a very important role in keeping the balance of this album So perfect. this album has it ALL .

i feel like this deserves a tier list honestly . party rock is probably the most them and the most engaging!! shes so fun and she makes me happy. cloud 9 too!!! but we don't give jumper enough credit i think. also knock knock is up there . also at times u can see that believer has the potential to be a s+++ choreo . shes not but she has the potential nd i thought it was important for me to point that out

June confronts his brother's killer.

Jones and June made it to the prison.

"You don't have to do this if you don't want to, June."

"I'd rather. I can't hide away forever. I gotta get answers on how and why he came to Grimsborough."

Jones and June looked at the cell number before entering the hallway.

Jones was hesitant, but he understood why June wanted to go with it. "Well, you go ahead. I'll be right behind you." And June appreciated his support.

"Thanks, David."

June opened the cell door and walked on as David walked behind him. June looked around and saw criminals he arrested, criminals that were caught before he came, criminals that Jones and June didn't catch. And they got to Anquezze's cell.

"That's her." June looked behind David and David nodded to him. And with pride and fear mixed in his stomach, June stepped to the cell.

Anquezze noticed June in front of her cell and slowly backed up. "It's okay. It's me. I don't want any trouble."

Anquezze was scared of him because of their last interaction. But she understood that he wanted a talk. "If you're here to talk about your brother, I told you why."

"You could at least tell me why he got here."

"... we used airplane, what do you think."

"I said WHY, not HOW."

"Why what?"

"Listen. I'm being nice to you. So try again."

Anquezze knew she hated him as much as she hated his brother, but she knows what he's capable of. His brother talks about him.

"He came... to see you again."

June felt relieved to hear that.

"He heard about you becoming one of GPD's greatest cops and really, I thought it was sweet. He and I met after you left. He was the nicest person, but his mom was treating him badly and I guess... he kinda started to inflict it on me."

For a split second, June felt bad for her. But the next second, he remembered how much pain she caused him.

"Anquezze, you could have came to us if you guys were here a month ago. I could've arrested him. I know he's my brother, but that's no way to treat a lady in my eyes."

Anquezze looked flattered. "Oh? Are you going to think about asking me on a date, Captain? As much as it's sweet, I'm done with love."

"And I wouldn't be interested in asking you either."

"Oh, some other girl's on your mind?"

"More like... some other guy."

"...huh. I... kinda thought you guys were..."

"No. Not really."

Anquezze and June stood in quick silence. But she broke it.

"Y'know, just because Sheng and I had a bad relationship doesn't change how much he loves you. He really did miss you. If you go in his apartment and find his photobook about him in Grimsborough, you'll know for sure."

June did have the photobook that David gave him. It's been 3 weeks and he still didn't go through it.

"I will. Thanks, I'll... catch you later. Or not." As June was about to leave, Anquezze called out to him.

"Wait, June. I do want to say that... I really am sorry. I know it won't take back what I did to him, but I couldn't just live in guilt. And I-I also wanna apologize for... trying to kill you. I guess... grief and anger didn't mix good for me."

June took those words into thought and he did appreciate it. But like she said, it's not going to fix anything.

"I can't... say that I forgive you and that it excuses your actions. But I understand why you were in pain. And I apologize for what my brother has done to make you feel that way. And I'm also sorry for scaring you that night. And for... calling you a bitch. I swear I don't mean that."

"Eh, y'know."

"And, Anquezze. If you ever get released... stay far away from me unless it's urgent. And from my friends. And have a better life. Remember, I can't forgive and forget, but I can let you go. So that's all I ask."

"... If I do get out, I'll try."

"... yeah. Goodbye, Anquezze."

"See ya."

June made it back to Jones. They started to head out. "How'd it go?"

"Eh. She apologized for everything and recommended me the book you gave me."

"I thought that would happen. What'd you do?"

"... I apologized for how I acted with her. And I told her to stay away from us if she ever got released and to build a better life.

...

Am I wrong for that?"

"No. I don't think so. She has to respect that actions have consequences. She seems to be taking responsibility already by apologizing and recommending the book."

"... I guess."

"Well, I think you made the right decision by telling her that."

"... Thanks."

"No problem."

As they both made it out of the prison, Jones thought of something. "Wanna go to the pizzeria I was telling you about? They actually started selling bakery!"

"... Do they have pumpkin spiced cakes?"

"You name it."

"... Hell yeah, let's go."
