do the thing but PLOT TWIST just do it for five different ships
i. For a long time, he doesn’t think about it. It’s the age factor, of course, that really troubles him and because of that he pushes it all to the back of his mind, thinking that if it’s there, if he doesn’t have to consider it, it won’t bother the ever loving hell out of him. That’s not the case. And really it’s difficult to avoid. Their mothers have insisted that they’re going to be married since Jill was about seven years old. At that time, Brad in his preteen years scoffed and rolled his eyes. That definitely wasn’t going to happen, thank you very much. Even when she was entering her own preteen years he’d mess up the top of her head and call her kid in an affectionate and overly platonic manner; just to prove them all wrong.
He doesn’t enlist right away, he actually takes two years of college before he realizes that he’s not meant for this and she’s still only fifteen when it starts to really bug him. He kisses her for the first time when she’s seventeen and he’s fresh out of training camp, though even then he feels like a dirty old man. She doesn’t seem to want him to go away when he gets deployed and that tugs at him more than it should. Still, he leaves and he presses his head against the window of the bus trying so hard not to look at her. She’s turning nineteen when he comes back from his first tour and already he’s weary and worn out. He’s more excited to see her than he’d like to admit and it’s her that comes rushing at him when he lands. Her arms feel like home and for a moment he thinks he shouldn’t leave again.
ii. It’s always been him. She’s known that since they were kids, living in the same neighborhood and hanging out after school. It was him when she moved away, though back then she told herself that it was some silly schoolgirl crush and that she’d get over it. For awhile she did. For awhile she didn’t think about Owen Emerson and his smile and the way it felt when she was near him. For awhile she could think about other things, like how amazing being in drama club was and how she could do this for the rest of her life. She never thought she’d actually move back. She never thought she’d see anyone from Keene ever again, him especially, though of course the moment her father announced it, she thought of him. It was all OwenOwenOwen and I wonder what he's up to. The worst part— the part that killed her— was that he didn’t even know she was there. This time it was him that moved. This time she was sure she’d never see him again. And this time, the moment she laid eyes on him in San Diego of all places, she hated herself for never getting over it.
iii. In high school, he got this strange reputation of being a sap. A hopeless romantic, they’d dubbed him, and though his friends would give him a hard time, Nick never really did anything to stop the comments. He didn’t mind. After all, it was the truth. He was a bit of a sap, he was a hopeless romantic, though he didn’t have a girlfriend until he was sixteen to get the opportunity to woo someone, he’d always known the way he’d do it. Delaney Fuller was a whirlwind he’d never expected and she knocked him off his damn feet with her bright smile and green eyes. Honestly, Nick would tell you, the moment he met her, he knew— I’m gonna marry this woman. No one believed in high school sweethearts then. Going away to separate colleges would sure to be a killer and he worried over that, but still, he knew. He knew and he wasn’t going to let her go.
iv. Boyfriend. She thinks. The word runs through her head repeatedly after he calls her out on it. Boyfriend. Boyfriend. Boyfriend. She’d never used it before. Honestly, she hadn’t even been aware she’d said it and a part of her kicks herself for giving him material to use against her. Boyfriend. She wants to be angry with him. She wants to be so damn angry with him. She wants to punch him in the damn chest and distance herself away from him, just so he understands how much it pained her that he missed her game. But he smiles at her, the corners of his lips flicking up just slightly and she thinks, fuck— I’m not going anywhere.
v. She wonders what she makes of her too often. Talks poor Molly’s ear off about it until she's blue in the fucking face. Her best friend laughs and comments on her being a damn sucker for a pretty face and Regan shakes her head, clicking her tongue and commenting on how making an impression is so important and that she doesn't necessarily make the best ones. And of course that’s always been her when it comes to those that matter the most. Regan’s always cared too much about what girls like Naomi thought of her. Some random guy on the street? Didn’t matter, she spouted so much vitriol at anyone who tried that she was damn near unapproachable by then. It was written all over her face. But her? Seeing her in her element, teaching students, that stupid smile that got her in the worst of ways. It definitely mattered what she thought.
