"Do you have any idea what its like telling him his Buck is hurt?"

"Yes," Buck growls out, voice sharp as the knives embedded in Eddie's chest. "Yeah, Eddie, I really fucking do because I was the one that had to tell him that you'd been shot."

Eddie laughs. Its a broken sound, animalistic and rough and sounding only like a laugh echoing halfway across the galaxy. A wet laugh, edges razor sharp with bitter irony, corners like spears of desperate loneliness. He wants to grab Buck by the face and make him understand. Make him understand that the comparison of those situations is an admission of Buck's place in Christopher's life. Make him understand what Buck has never quite been able to grasp fully.

"Once," Eddie says instead. "Once. Imagine doing that five times within the last six months. Over and over and over. Watching his little face crumple like that first time when we didn't know if you'd ever wake up, listening to him begging to see you even if you've already been sent home because he doesn't quite believe that you aren't gonna disappear like his mom." Its too much, too much all at once, and Buck's mouth falls open like he hadn't been expecting it. A chink in his armour. Eddie exploits it. "He's terrified, Buck. And you just keeping throwing yourself into danger like he doesn't care about you."

"I know he cares," Buck argues hoarsely.

"Do you?" Eddie pushes, eyes dropping to the tense line of Buck's shoulders. "Do you? Because I think that if you did, if you knew just how much he cared, you wouldn't be ignoring harnesses and risking your life for a Walmart bunny."

"You know as well as I do that toys mean a lot to kids—"

"They're valuable, yes," Eddie concedes. "But not at the cost of a life, Buck." Not your life. "Does Christopher even cross your mind when you free climb down a cliff?"

"Of course he does!" Buck clenches his hands in the pillow he drags into his lap, unable to do anything else to purge his anger. "It was a little boy I was climbing down for, Eddie! You don't think I was thinking of Christopher?"

"I don't think you were thinking of him in the right way," Eddie snaps, pushing himself up from the armchair and pacing the floor in front of the coffee table.

"And how should I have been thinking of him, Eddie?" Buck's voice turns cold and emotionless in a way that sends a shudder down his spine. "In terms and conditions? In legal fine print? In the event of your death? Is that how I should have been thinking of him? As his back-up plan?"

"Back-up plan?" Eddie stares down at him incredulously, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

HOLY CRAP! JFC! SWEET HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! What was this finale?! I mean SOOOOOO much amazing - like straight-out-of-fanfiction - Buddie content...not gonna mention all the stuff I didn't like....but Tina...Eddie made Buck Chris' legal guardian! Buck staying with Chris during Eddie's hospitalization! Eddie called Buck 'Evan'! which I didn't know how much I needed until now 🙏🙏🙏 in a sense I can't WAIT for season 5....but then again I'm kinda scared seeing some of the writing directions Tim&co decided to take (with TK and Buck) ...even if they are temporary 🤔

SO MUCH GOOD STUFF TO SCREAM ABOUT! 💖 Buck becoming visibly angry and rolling right under the fire truck 💖 Buck lifting Eddie into the firetruck with what seemed to be little effort (I want those bloopers 👀) 💖 "Stay with me, okay?" 💖 "Are you hurt?" *Buck suddenly remembers he's covered in blood* *doesn't want Eddie to worry about him* 💖 The way Buck's anxiety was seeping through his words as he said "We're so close. I just need you to hang on." 💖 "You okay, Buckley?" "No." 💖 The view of the universe poster in Christopher's room as Buck talks 💖 "Your dad is tough as nails. He's a fighter, right?" (Wow, Buck. Does Eddie know you admire his strength?) 💖 Buck allowing himself to cry in front of Christopher once he finds out Eddie's surgery was a success 💖 Buck and Chris literally leaning on each other for support 💖 The revelation that Buck is staying at the Diaz house while Eddie is recovering in the hospital 💖 Christopher teasing Buck about his loud snoring 💖 Buck telling Carla "The team feels off without Eddie." 💖 Buck being angry with himself that he "couldn't do anything to protect [Eddie]" 💖 The kiss being immediately followed up by Buck running to see Eddie and sharing a relieved smile 🥰 💖 Christopher getting to talk to his dad 😊 and Carla reassuring Eddie that she and Buck have everything under control 💖 Buck telling Eddie that Carla offered to have Christopher stay with her, but Buck wanted to maintain a sense of normalcy for him and decided to stay until Eddie got better 💖 "I kinda lost it when I told him you got shot. I should've held it together." BUT YOU COULDN'T. BECAUSE IT'S EDDIE. 💖 "You were there for him when I couldn't be. That's what matters." 💖 "I think it might have been better for him if I was the one who got shot." Eddie: *is annoyed* 💖 Buck driving Eddie home from the hospital 💖 "It's in my will that if I die, you become Christopher's legal guardian." ----PAUSE---- BUCKLEY-DIAZ FAMILY IS OFFICIALLY CANON!!!! 💖 "My attorney said you could refuse." "You know I wouldn't." "Nah, I know you wouldn't." 💖 Eddie made Buck Christopher's other legal guardian knowing his family would probably fight for custody, but he trusts Buck to fight back 💖 "No one will ever fight for my son as hard as you. That is what I want for him." 💖 Why is Eddie telling Buck this information NOW when he changed his will a year ago after almost dying in the well collapse? "Because, Evan. You came in here the other day and you said it would have been better if it had been you who was shot. You act like you're expendable. *audible sigh* But you're wrong." 💖 Buck watching his boys reunite at home Heteronormativity aside... I had a good time! BT becoming a couple just as Tim is being less than enthusiastic about EddieA*a makes sense, annoying as it is. Now it's Buck's turn to be involved with someone else while Eddie is on the outside looking in. Although, given what has transpired in the last 24 hours, I am not expecting the Buckley-Diaz boys to suffer as a result. Their interactions will carry a different vibe now that Buck knows he's basically Christopher's other parent. Girlfriends come and go, but that family is forever.

ok no but LITERALLY i could write an entire thesis on the relationship buck has with fatherhood. when chris and buck are introduced in 2x03, i think it's really easy to dismiss the look buck gives chris/eddie as just like. a friend being glad his friend is reunited with his son. but literally everything we know about buck's relationship with his parents refute that wholly, because the look buck gives them isn't just "i'm so glad chris is safe" it's also "oh, so that's what a good father looks like"

and like, we see from the moment buck becomes a part of the diaz's lives that he's making the genuine effort his parents never made with him and maddie. he enlists carla's help, he makes sure bobby is okay with chris being at the station, he gives and he gives and he gives because no one afforded him that growing up besides his sister.

100% buck has always felt like he's been loved despite not because. despite him being reckless, despite him being headstrong, despite him sometimes making the wrong choices. but buck-- buck loves christopher because. because he accepts buck without question, because he makes people happy, because he made eddie into the father and man he is. buck loves christopher because he's chris, not despite that

and that's only amplified during 4x14 when buck takes care of christopher while eddie is in the hospital. because buck had literally no reason to need to do that. carla, abuela, pepa--a host of other people could have been the ones to take care of chris, to support him while his dad is away. but buck chooses to, he chooses to take the "harder job" and be with chris, because he knows that's what eddie would want. buck doesn't even know about the will at this point, so he's just proving the fact that he loves chris because. and not because he's legally obligated to, either, but because he loves chris. buck is going through something fucking awful, had to watch his best friend get shot in front of him, and instead of choosing to look after himself in that moment, he chooses to look after the kid that he loves like his own.

anyway im totally normal about buck's perception of love and parenthood as you can probably tell
