Day 2: Physical Status

So appearance, Garrett's tall (6' 1"), and while definitely fit/muscular he isn't really bulky, (think more James McAvoy in Split rather than say Henry Cavil/Jason Mamoa) and rocks some thick chest/body hair. While he doesn't have any noteworthy/prominent scars his nose has been broken multiple times, generally due to bar fights, and it shows.

While in Kirkwall, and before, Garrett would usually be seen with an undercut or similar hair to this gorgeous art and either clean shaven or a little stubble. After leaving Kirkwall, or more specifically after being forced to kill Anders, both his hair and beard grew out. Initially it changed because he didn't care, focusing more on dealing with the aftermath of the Chantry explosion, having to leave his friends family, and coming to grip with killing his partner. Once he pieced himself back together, as best he could at least, it evolved into a way to stay under the radar.

RIP JIMMY GARRETT

1954-2021

James Coleman Garrett was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 23, 1954. Garrett is best known for playing Jerry Carmichael, the son of Lucille Ball’s Lucy Carmichael on “The Lucy Show”.

Before being cast by Lucy, a six year-old Garrett made his screen debut on a December 1960 episode of “The Twilight Zone” (a show that began on “The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse) as a child who begs a down-and-out street corner Santa (Art Carney) for "a big turkey pot Christmas dinner".

A year later he was seen in the feature film The Second Time Around playing Debbie Reynolds’s son. The film also featured Andy Griffith.

In March 1962, he played the son of Shirley Mitchell (Lucy’s Marion Strong), new neighbors on “Mr. Ed.”

In early 1962 Desilu purchased the rights to “Suzuki Beane”, a book written in 1961 by Sandra Scoppettone. A television pilot was made, with Katie Sweet as Suzuki and Jimmy Garrett as Henry, but the series was not picked up. It was to be part of a Victor Borge-hosted anthology series. No doubt this pilot was instrumental in Garrett being cast on “The Lucy Show.”

During the summer of 1962, Garrett was cast as Lucy Carmichael’s son, Jimmy. He was a regular character for seasons one and two, a recurring character in season three, and then disappeared from the series. During Garrett’s audition, Ball loved the way Garrett delivered his lines. Vivian Vance once noted that Jimmy had the “Fred Mertz” lines!

Garrett’s image appeared on the box cover for “The Lucy Show” Game. The game was suggested for ages 9 to adult, so technically Garrett was not old enough to play when it was first issued.

His character was even in “The Lucy Show” Gold Key Comic Books, although Jerry was given blue hair!

Garrett was immortalized by legendary illustrator Robert Thompson.

Garrett did 54 episodes of the series from 1962 to 1965.

During season 1, he does not appear in episode 27.

During season 2, he does not appear in episodes 1, 2, 5, 9, 11, 16, 17, 20, 24, 25, 27 and 28.

During season 3, he does not appear in episodes 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26.

During season 4 he appeared in two episodes.

When Lucy and Mr. Mooney relocate to California in season 4, Jimmy Garrett is in the first episode, but then Jerry is packed off to Boarding school - this time for good. Well, almost...

Jerry comes home for the holidays in 1964 to join Mr. Mooney and the Bank’s choir, conducted by Lucy. This is Garrett’s final appearance in the role.

As Garrett’s commitment to Lucy came to an end, he did a day playing a paper boy on “Burke’s Law” (1963-66) an ABC crime drama starring Gene Barry and Sal Mineo.

During this same time, he appeared on an episode of “My Three Sons” (1960-72) appearing opposite his Barry Livingston, who played Jerry Carmichael’s best friend Arnold Mooney, and Don Grady, who played Chris Carmichael’s boyfriend Bill in “Lucy is a Chaperone” (TLS S1;E27), although Garrett did not appear in that episode. The series was filmed on the Desilu lot.

In 1966, Garrett’s character came back in name only - although it wasn’t the right name! When Lucy receives a letter from her son in the beginning of this episode, she calls him ‘Jimmy’ instead of correctly calling him 'Jerry.’ According to Geoffrey Mark Fidelman’s The Lucy Book, when Lucille Ball was handed the script for the first time, she complained that they had used the wrong name. She was reminded that it was 'Jimmy’ Garrett who played 'Jerry’ Carmichael. Ball still insisted that she was right and the reference was left as 'Jimmy.’ However it came about, it certainly is one of the biggest mistakes of the series.

In 1966, Garrett played a British Hooligan in the feature film Munster Go Home.

His final acting credit, also in 1966, was courtesy of Desi Arnaz. He was cast in the pilot of “The Carol Channing Show,” but the show was not picked up for series. It was then - at age 12 - he left acting for good. But not show business....

As an adult, he worked first as a talent agent, and then a production accountant. He has been behind the scenes in such popular shows as “America’s Next Top Model,” “The Apprentice” and “Shark Tank.”

Garrett was profiled in the 2016 book X Child Stars: Where Are They Now? by Kathy Garver and Fred Ascher. He often attends various meet and greets and collectibles shows, giving interviews and signing autographs. An interview with adult Garrett is a bonus feature on the season one “Lucy Show” DVDs.

In 2015 he was recognized by the Southern California Motion Picture Council for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

Jimmy Garrett died of complications from diabetes at age 66. He was father to two children, Amelie and Spencer, from his marriage to ex wife, Laura Johansen.

Women of Twilight: Backstory Headcanon Edition

I’ve always hated how horrible and miserable the women of Twilight’s backstories were compared to the men’s - Victoria being pimped out, Leah being betrayed and abandoned, Rosalie being gang-raped to death - and so here are some HCs that fix them.

Victoria

Victoria was known in her human days for running a successful saloon in the Old West. Her call girls helped build the economy of their mining town, and in turn they built churches, businesses, and social programs.

Victoria herself kept the women safe from the grabby menfolk they served, and she always kept a sawed-off shotgun under the counter for the particularly mean ones.

One day a vamp - James - came in and grabbed one of Victoria’s girls. She’d seen this often enough, so she emptied her shotgun in him.

It was, of course, ineffective, and in a rage James turned on her. Left for dead, Victoria spent the next three days behind her bar.

When she awoke as a vampire, Victoria discovered that James had completely leveled her town. She made it her life’s purpose to hunt him down and destroy him.

Unfortunately, James was immensely stealthy. It was almost as if he had enhanced self-preservation on his side. Victoria chased him for over 100 years, always a few steps behind.

She gathered coven members along the way, among them Laurent and Garrett, and stoked a fear of James in them.

By the time she discovered James, he’d hurt another human girl - Bella, who could be heard writhing and screaming in a ballet studio.

The Cullen coven was close behind him, and they managed to dispatch James before Victoria’s coven emerged from the shadows.

Enraged at losing her chance at revenge, Victoria vowed to exact her vengeance on the Cullens for stealing her prey... soon.

Leah

Leah was the first to turn. Her father witnessed her transformation, but since he was an elder of the tribe he wasn’t surprised.

Harry became a close confidant as she went through her early days of being a werewolf, sharing the history of the Quileute wolves and giving her essential emotional support. She didn’t navigate her beginnings alone.

As the others followed in her footsteps, Sam included, she grew into the pack’s Alpha and took Jake as her Beta.

Fiercely protective of her family and pack, she began to grow apart from Sam. He accused her of dividing her love among her wolves. She'd thrown herself heart and soul into wolfhood and leadership, and eventually discovered that her emotional connection to her fiance had frayed away.

Upon breaking off her relationship with Sam, he turned to Emily for comfort. Leah watched their budding relationship with concern for her pack, but otherwise was relieved that Sam had moved on. His constant grief in her head had become distracting.

Years down the road, with Jake at her side, Sam and Emily married, and the vampire menace eliminated, Leah found time to slow down.

She stopped turning and began to age. Jake joined her, and the two of them developed a closeness she’d never had with another member of the pack (Sam included).

Nearly a decade after the vampires left the area, Cullens included, Seth, Jake, Sam, Leah, and all the rest decided to leave the wolf behind.

Jake and Leah married, and one day discovered that enough time had lapsed between the turn and that day for Leah to become pregnant.

With time, Jake and Leah became elders of the tribe, their children carrying on the Quileute legacy. Should the vampires ever return, the wolves would be ready.

Rosalie

The men who ever hurt Rosalie straight up don’t exist in my world.

Rosalie grew up with an inflated sense of her own worth, and by the time her parents sent her to finishing school she was insufferable.

The girls there were merciless, mocking her mincing steps and the way she flipped her hair, until Rosalie didn’t even want to leave her room.

After years of introspection and addressing her vanity, she eventually won the respect of her peers by hosting a fundraiser for underprivileged girls in her hometown.

She graduated top of her class, voted “most refined” by the girls who’d become her friends.

Her parents, being the uninvolved members of the bourgeoisie that they were, forgot her graduation and the day she was to be picked up from the train station.

This didn’t phase her, and she determined that she would walk. Home was only a mile from the station, after all.

Dusk was falling when she saw the lights in her parents’ mansion over the hill. The wind picked up. She lugged her suitcase in one gloved hand, the other clamped down over her hat. She didn’t hear the car approaching behind her until its lights illuminated her.

The brakes squalled. She froze in fear.

It struck her - lightning strikes of pain in her back, her legs, trickling blood from her scalp - then drove off.

Unbeknownst to her, Mrs. Hale was suffering from a fever that night and had called Dr. Cullen from town to tend to her.

He discovered her an hour later, broken in the road, her spine severed and her legs bent wrong. She would’ve died in mere minutes if he hadn’t turned her then and there.

Esme

Esme’s parents, while not perfect, weren’t cruel and neglectful either. They pushed her to do her best, which included studying hard to be a teacher someday.

Charles was the love of her human life. They met while she was in her first year as an art teacher at a girls’ finishing school in Akron, OH. He swept her off her feet.

Their wedding was a shotgun wedding, right before he was sent overseas in WWI. She was glowingly pregnant in her white dress.

Charles never came home.

When Henry was born, post-partum depression took her hard. If she hadn’t been living with her parents as a young widow, she may have neglected her young son.

At her lowest point, Esme entered post-partum psychosis. In the middle of the night, in the depths of winter, she left her parents’ home.

All she left behind to explain was a tearfully written suicide note left on Henry’s sleeping form in his bassinet.

There were no cliffs near her, and she didn’t need one. In her flimsy nightgown, all it took was a few hours of exposure to render her nearly lifeless in a snowbank.

Thought to be dead, she was taken to the morgue, where a confused Carlisle brought her back to (un)life.

Henry still lives, now an old man in Cleveland, OH. Esme’s parents raised him as their own.

Esme and Carlisle still check on him once in a while.

Sophia Magdalena Scholl (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943) was a German student and anti-Nazi political activist, active within the White Rose non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich (LMU) with her brother, Hans. As a result, she was executed by guillotine. Since the 1970s, Scholl has been extensively commemorated for her anti-Nazi resistance work. Scholl was brought up in the Lutheran church. She entered junior or grade school at the age of seven, learned easily, and had a carefree childhood. In 1930, the family moved to Ludwigsburg and then two years later to Ulmwhere her father had a business consulting office. In 1932, Scholl started attending a secondary school for girls. At the age of twelve, she chose to join the Bund Deutscher Mädel (League of German Girls), as did most of her classmates. Her initial enthusiasm gradually gave way to criticism. She was aware of the dissenting political views of her father, friends, and some teachers. Even her own brother Hans, who once eagerly participated in the Hitler Youth program, became entirely disillusioned with the Nazi Party.Political attitude had become an essential criterion in her choice of friends. The arrest of her brothers and friends in 1937 for participating in the German Youth Movement left a strong impression on her. She had a talent for drawing and painting and for the first time, came into contact with a few so-called “degenerate” artists. An avid reader, she developed a growing interest in philosophy and theology. In spring 1940, she graduated from secondary school, where the subject of her essay was “The Hand that Moved the Cradle, Moved the World.” Scholl nearly did not graduate, having lost any desire to participate in the classes which had largely become Nazi indoctrination. Being fond of children, she became a kindergarten teacher at the Fröbel Institute in Ulm. She had also chosen this job hoping that it would be recognized as an alternative service to Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labor Service), a prerequisite to be admitted to the university. This was not the case, though, and in spring 1941 she began a six-month stint in the auxiliary war service as a nursery teacher in Blumberg. The military-like regimen of the Labor Service caused her to think very hard about the political situation and to begin practicing passive resistance. After her six months in the National Labor Service, in May 1942, she enrolled at the University of Munich as a student of biology and philosophy. Her brother Hans, who was studying medicine there, introduced her to his friends. Although this group of friends eventually was known for their political views, they initially were drawn together by a shared love of art, music, literature, philosophy, and theology. Hiking in the mountains, skiing and swimming were also of importance to them. They often attended concerts, plays, and lectures together. In Munich, Scholl met a number of artists, writers, and philosophers, particularly Carl Muth and Theodor Haecker, who were important contacts for her. The question they pondered the most was how the individual must act under a dictatorship. During the summer vacation in 1942, Scholl had to do war service in a metallurgical plant in Ulm. At the same time, her father was serving time in prison for having made a critical remark to an employee about Hitler. Between 1940 and 1941, Scholl’s brother, Hans Scholl, a former member of the Hitler Youth, began questioning the principles and policies of the Nazi regime. As a student at the University of Munich, Hans Scholl met two Roman Catholic men of letters who redirected his life, inspiring him to turn from studying medicine and pursue religion, philosophy, and the arts. Gathering around him like-minded friends, Alexander Schmorell, Wil Graff, and Jurgen Wittenstein, they eventually adopted a strategy of passive resistance towards the Nazis by writing and publishing leaflets that called for democracy and social justice, calling themselves the White Rose. In the summer of 1942, four leaflets were written and distributed throughout the school and central Germany. Based upon letters between Scholl and her boyfriend, Fritz Hartnagel (reported and analyzed by Gunter Biemer and Jakob Knab in the journal Newman Studien), she had given two volumes of Cardinal John Henry Newman’s sermons to Hartnagel when he was deployed to the eastern front in May 1942. This discovery by Jakob Knab shows the importance of religion in Scholl’s life and was highlighted in an article in the Catholic Herald in the UK. Scholl learned of the White Rose pamphlet when she found one at her university. Realizing her brother helped write the pamphlet, Scholl herself began to work on the White Rose. The group of authors had been horrified by Hartnagel’s reports of German war crimes on the Eastern Front where Hartnagel witnessed Soviet POWs being shot in a mass grave and learned of the mass killings of Jews. Her correspondence with Hartnagel deeply discussed the “theology of conscience” developed in Newman’s writings. This is seen as her primary defense in her transcribed interrogations leading to her “trial” and execution. Those transcripts became the basis for a 2005 film treatment, Sophie Scholl – The Final Days. With six core members, three more White Rose pamphlets were created and circulated over the summer of 1942. he core members initially included Hans Scholl (Sophie’s brother), Willi Graf, Christoph Probst and Alexander Schmorell (Schmorell was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2012). Initially her brother had been keen to keep her unaware of their activities, but once she discovered them she joined him and proved valuable to the group because, as a woman, her chances of being randomly stopped by the SS were much smaller. Calling themselves the White Rose, they instructed Germans to passively resist the Nazi government. The pamphlet used both Biblical and philosophical support for an intellectual argument of resistance. In addition to authorship and protection, Scholl helped copy, distribute and mail pamphlets while also managing the group’s finances. She and the rest of the White Rose were arrested for distributing the sixth leaflet at the University of Munich on 18 February 1943. In the People’s Court before Judge Roland Freisler on 21 February 1943, Scholl was recorded as saying these words: Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don’t dare express themselves as we did. No testimony was allowed for the defendants; this was their only defense. On 22 February 1943, Scholl, her brother, Hans, and their friend, Christoph Probst, were found guilty of treason and condemned to death. They were all beheaded by a guillotine by executioner Johann Reichhart in Munich’s Stadelheim Prison only a few hours later, at 17:00 hrs. The execution was supervised by Walter Roemer, the enforcement chief of the Munich district court. Prison officials, in later describing the scene, emphasized the courage with which she walked to her execution. Her last words were: “How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?” Fritz Hartnagel was evacuated from Stalingrad in January 1943, but did not return to Germany before Sophie was executed. In October 1945, he married Sophie’s sister Elisabeth. Following her death, a copy of the sixth leaflet was smuggled out of Germany through Scandinavia to the UK by German jurist Helmuth James Graf von Moltke, where it was used by the Allied Forces. In mid-1943, they dropped over Germany millions of propaganda copies of the tract, now retitled The Manifesto of the Students of Munich. In a historical context, the White Rose’s legacy has significance for many commentators, both as a demonstration of exemplary spiritual courage, and as a well-documented case of social dissent in a society of violent repression, censorship, and conformist pressure. Playwright Lillian Garrett-Groag stated in Newsday on 22 February 1993, that “It is possibly the most spectacular moment of resistance that I can think of in the twentieth century … The fact that five little kids, in the mouth of the wolf, where it really counted, had the tremendous courage to do what they did, is spectacular to me. I know that the world is better for them having been there, but I do not know why.” In the same issue of Newsday, Holocaust historian Jud Newborn noted that “You cannot really measure the effect of this kind of resistance in whether or not X number of bridges were blown up or a regime fell … The White Rose really has a more symbolic value, but that’s a very important value.” Else Gebel shared Sophie Scholl’s cell and recorded her last words before being taken away to be executed. “It is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go. But how many have to die on the battlefield in these days, how many young, promising lives. What does my death matter if by our acts thousands are warned and alerted. Among the student body there will certainly be a revolt.”

“Grief and Grievance” [Press Preview] @ The New Museum by j- No Via Flickr: LES Manhattan NYC Feb. 16, 2021 exhibition on show thru June 6, 2021

Opening to coincide with Black History Month, “Grief and Grievance” is an exhibition that focuses on the intersection of white nationalism and the cultural memory of Black grief as central to American life, as articulated in the work of contemporary Black American artists working in nearly every artistic medium.

The show, as conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor, was originally intended to begin prior to the 2020 U.S. presidential election, but due to the current global pandemic, the opening had to be delayed. The project was completed by Naomi Beckwith, Massimiliano Gioni, Glenn Ligon, and Mark Nash as curatorial advisors.

In Enwezor’s view, the works in this exhibition help illustrate the idea that "mourning is a practice that permeates the social, economic, and emotional realities of Black life in America as it is experienced across multiple generations", from the civil rights movement of the 1960s to issues of police violence in the United States in the 1990s and today. The works of these artists stand as proof that many of the concerns driving the current debates around race, discrimination, and violence in America and that Black grief remains a national emergency that must not be ignored.

Jones, Kahlil Joseph, Deana Lawson, Simone Leigh, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Julie Mehretu, Okwui Okpokwasili, Adam Pendleton, Julia Phillips, Howardena Pindell, Cameron Rowland, Lorna Simpson, Sable Elyse Smith, Tyshawn Sorey, Diamond Stingily, Henry Taylor, Hank Willis Thomas, Kara Walker, Nari Ward, Carrie Mae Weems, and Jack Whitten.

RTARL’s 2020 NFL Season Week 15 Extravapalooza

It’ll be difficult for anything that happens during an NFL game to dethrone the play from last night’s utterly meaningless Ole Miss-LSU game where Mississippi QB Matt Corral absolutely trucked an official (and fumbled the ball in the process) as my personal highlight of the weekend. I mean, look at this photo of the aftermath:

It’s quite an appropriate distillation of 2020, really. An older man who’s been turned into an angel by a young person completely unwilling to alter the plan he’d made. The representation of rules and authority being utterly trampled. The apparatus tasked with overseeing things failing to react to the danger until it was too late. That’s art, baby. Or maybe it’s just a funny play where a guy fell down and went boom.

My picks are in BOLD, and the lines come to us courtesy of our friends at Vegas Insider. I use the “VI Consensus” line, which is the line that occurs most frequently across Vegas Insider’s list of sportsbooks. Your sportsbook of choice may offer a different number, and if you’d like my opinion on said number A) you are insane, and B) leave a comment below and I’ll try to answer at some point before things kickoff today.

EARLY GAMES

Seattle Seahawks (-6.5) at Washington Football Team

The Football Team’s defense is plenty good enough to hold Russell Wilson and the boys relatively in check. The problem is, I don’t think the Football Team offense missing RB Antonio Gibson and relying on Dwayne Haskins at QB can put up enough points to keep pace with even a moderately scuffling Seattle team

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-6.5) at Atlanta Falcons

Once again, my “Do Not Pick the Falcons Against a Good Team If Julio Jones Is Out” rule is in play.

San Francisco 49ers (-3) at Dallas Cowboys

Niners QB Nick Mullens has been a turnover factory in recent weeks, which sounds delicious, but is actually detrimental to winning football games. Luckily for San Fran, this week the gorgeously precise brutality of Kyle Shanahan’s running game gets to face a Dallas defense that sits dead last in the NFL in Yards Per Carry allowed. This does not portend well for the Cowboys, in my opinion. The unspeakable horrors that the San Francisco ground-game will wreak on Dallas combined with the fact that their defense gets to tee off on Andy Dalton should lead to an easy cover for the road team.

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings (-3)

These teams met roughly a month ago in a truly abominable 19-13 crapfest won by the Vikings. Nick Foles was quarterbacking the Bears for that one, but this time.....

...is in the saddle. For comedy’s sake I’m actively rooting for Mitchell Trubisky to play out of his mind in these last few games. Minnesota’s very “meh” pass defense should help my dreams come true.

Detroit Lions at Tennessee Titans (-9.5)

In another case of a terrifying rushing attack going up against a soft defense, here we have Derrick Henry gunning for a 2,000 yard season against a Lions defense that isn’t Cowboys-level bad, but it ain’t great. Lions QB Matthew Stafford is beat up once again, as he’s listed as questionable with a rib injury. He’s most likely going to play because he’s tough as hell, but I have no clue how effective he can be with busted ribs, torn thumb ligaments, and a missing Kenny Golladay.

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts (-7.5)

The Colts have looked great recently, winning 4 of their last 5, and the Texans are coming off of a TERRIBLE loss to the Bears. This seems like a great time for a classic “Philip Rivers’ Team Inexplicably Gags Against a Weaker Opponent” game. Houston is getting WR Brandin Cooks back for this one, which will be a big boost to their offense. I’m really putting a lot of faith in DeShaun Watson to do a bunch of cool shit here.

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (-1.5)

A rookie QB facing a Bill Belichick defense for the first time is gonna be a no from me, dawg. This game will likely be HIDEOUS to watch if you like scoring, as I don’t expect the New England offense to be able to do a whole hell of a lot against Miami’s defense, either.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Baltimore Ravens (-13)

I think there’s a good chance the Ravens will be a little flat for this one coming off of their huge Monday Night Football win over the Browns. Gardner Minshew is back at QB for the Jags, and I think he makes their passing game respectable enough that Baltimore won’t be able to completely zero in on extra-studly RB James Robinson. I still think the Ravens will probably win, but it’ll be closer than 13.

LATE GAMES

Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals (-6.5)

BIRD BATTLE! At first glance, it seems like Kyler Murray and the Cardinals got back on track last week with a 26-7 beatdown of the Giants. HOWEVAH, the Giants only had 159 yards of offense (81 yards passing!) in that game, as it was a complete disaster for them on that side of the ball. Sure, the Arizona defense deserves some credit for that, but a bed-shitting like that falls more on the owner of the butt. THE ANUS IS ON THEM. This was a bad metaphor. Anyway, the Cardinals offense saw four drives stall out and end in field goals and their overall numbers weren’t all that impressive. They’ll need to be much better to cover 6.5 against an apparently rejuvenated Eagles team.

New York Jets at Los Angeles Rams (-17)

It’s really a testament to how unspeakably poor the Jets organization is that I didn’t have to think all that hard about laying over 2 TDs in an NFL game. This season has truly been a work of art. The art is more in the vein of a John Wayne Gacy clown painting as opposed to a Claude Monet, but still.

Kansas City Chiefs (-3) at New Orleans Saints

They must’ve wrapped Drew Brees up in CopperFit bracelets like a mummy to get him able to play in this game with 11 broken ribs. I’d be more worried about the busted ribs affecting a QB who can actually break a pane of glass with his throws when healthy. Brees has already adapted to having a little pea-shooter out there, so I don’t think it’s that big a deal (VERY easy for me to say). BUT, I have a likely galaxy-brained take that the Saints would have a better shot in this particular game with Taysom Hill at QB. Hill’s ability to scramble and pick up 1st downs with his legs would be a major help if the goal is to keep Patrick Mahomes off the field as much as possible. I worry that without Michael Thomas, Drew Brees is going to have to rely entirely too much on the likes of Jared Cook for anyone’s liking.

SNF: Cleveland Browns (-6.5) at New York Giants

The Giants will be starting Colt McCoy at quarterback for this game, which delights Myles Garrett. I like Myles Garrett; he’s my favorite player to ever yank a guy’s helmet off and try to commit a murder with it.

MNF: Pittsburgh Steelers (-14.5) at Cincinnati Bengals

This game is so horrendous is might drive Louis Riddick to take a job with the Lions.

The other day I got into a brief discussion of cover mentions throughout the history of the science fiction magazine.

Of course we all focus on the cover image first, but unless it is a really extraordinary sample of the genre’s art (between BEMs and brass brassieres it’s a bit tough to hit “extraordinary”) the very next thing we look at are the names of the authors to be found within.

To the first time buyer, these mean little to nothing. To the aficionado however, they can serve as an instant assessment of the expected quality of the issue. Lots of top names, stands a chance of being an excellent issue. No recognizable authors – well, either the title is on its way out (the editors are scraping the bottom of the submission barrel) or – we’re about to discover the next great thing to come down the genre pike. This latter possibility can only be found in the “vanishingly small probability” box, and represents more of a hope for the reader than a real possibility.

I decided to take a look at how the various magazine titles handled this bit of self-promotion. I then decided to use 1953 as my exemplar year.

Why 1953? Because 1953 was THE banner year for science fiction and fantasy magazines. And because the frenzy surrounding this boom year somewhat resembles what we’ve been seeing for the past several years – an explosion of electronic magazine titles, each of which carefully lists it’s available contents.

1953 was also a year in which the genre was changing; more markets meant that more authors could stretch, had a few more places they could pitch to. Many of the “old guard” were still publishing, and a lot of familiar names had become firmly established. The short story was still the dominant form for the genre and thus, it’s at least as good a year as any other to pick on.

(Wikipedia only lists 219 SF novels published in 1953. There were undoubtedly a handful of others, but this is a pretty good indicator of how few novels were published, as opposed to short fiction in the magazines.)

Incidentally, if you’d purchased all of these at the newsstand back in the day, it would have set you back a grand total of $55.80. Adjusted for inflation, it would be a bit over $500 bucks today. That’s a bit low. There are 176 issues in question and current asking price for a digest magazine on the stands these days is $7.99. At that price, these issues would have set you back about $1400.00. This suggests that things really were cheaper back then! (It’s also a lot easier to scrape up 25 cents looking for pennies on the street than it is to find $7.99….)

Beyond anything else, I simply can not imagine what it must have been like to be standing in front of the racks of a 1953 news shop. During they heyday of my purchasing magazines from news shops, I had Amazing, F&SF, Fantastic, Galaxy, If, Analog, Odyssey, Galileo, and a handful of reprint mags to choose from, as well as a number of “graphic” magazines like Heavy Metal and “media” magazines like Star Warp. I’d have been overwhelmed and terribly frustrated to find 38 different titles – I wouldn’t be able to choose which ones to spend my nickles on!

Truth be told, though, the regularity of these magazines was anything but regular. If you averaged out their production over twelve months, there’d only be 15 titles to choose from at any given time.

No doubt quality suffered to some degree, but the chances of finding good stories was also increased.

Note, interestingly, that only 45 percent of these titles include the identifier “science fiction” in their name. Among those that don’t include “science fiction”, seven consist of a descriptor and the word “stories”: Amazing, Planet, Rocket, Science, Space, Startling, Thrilling Wonder, and two a descriptor plus “story” – Fantastic and Wonder.

I think it safe to say that the majority of magazines back in 1953 still felt the need to be very specific about what they were offering readers. The cover image was apparently not quite enough, though I’m sure they worked hand-in-hand: the outre image would catch your eye and the properly worded title would confirm your suspicions: rocketships plus “Amazing” equals “science fiction”. (Anyone seeing a scantily clad “space babe” and hoping for titillation was going to be sorely disappointed, and unlikely to be interested in anything “science stories”.)

Those two elements were probably believed to be sufficient come-ons to new customers, none of whom had a computer or databases to consult. (In fact, whether or not you ever even saw a particular title on the newsstands was often hit or miss: if the magazine distributor didn’t cover a particular territory (or deliver to that territory that month), you’d never see the issue(s).

But then, most of the magazines also went ahead and put two other items on their covers. Frequently a statement about the contents was made -All New Stories!- and the title and author of at least one story listed on the table of contents.

I find it interesting that they felt a need to proclaim “All Stories Complete!” “All New Fiction!” and even “A Selection of the Best Stories of Fantasy and Science Fiction, new and old.” This was of course due to the fact that there were numerous reprint magazines on the stands (Famous Fantastic Mysteries among them) and woe to the reader who spent that hard-earned quarter, only to discover contents they’d already read!

Another thing regularly stuck on the cover of these ‘zines was a sort of sub-title: Strange Adventures on Other Worlds…Preview of the Future…Stories of the Future…Science Fiction…Best in Fantasy….

If you stand back and take a look at all of the covers shown previously, you may notice that there seem to be two general format layouts – “framed” and “unframed”, and further that the unframed titles break down into two sub-groups – boxes or no boxes.

Framed layouts present the cover image, untouched, and surround it with (usually) an inverted ‘L’ shaped border (Galaxy, Space Stories), while unframed titles print a full-sized cover image and slap text directly over the image. Some of these restrict the listing of contents or highlighted story in an opaque box (which is printed over the image).

It seems that two different schools of design thought were expressing themselves. Both have advantages: unframed present a larger image, framed present one that lets you see everything, no textual interruptions, please, but are small in area.

Also note that 1953 was a year of transition for magazine format: some of the titles shown were published in “pulp” format (about 9 inches tall), such as Two Complete Science-Adventure Tales and Fantastic Adventures, while most had or were switching to the familiar digest (about 7 inches tall) format – such as Fantastic Universe and Galaxy.

The larger format almost exclusively utilized an unframed layout, while many of the digests went with the framed format, though not exclusively. Notably, Amazing Stories seems to be all over the place.

Now, with all that being said…why’d they put those names on the cover?

These magazines had three basic markets they were trying to reach – the educated fan, the fan who didn’t know they were a fan, the casual reader.

The publishers didn’t really have to worry about the educated fan too much; chances were they were a subscriber, or belonged to a club that subscribed, or had fellow fans who shared issues around. Fan readers of SF&F were always hungry for more and needed no other motivation than “the new issue is on the stands” to go and seek it out.

Further, this kind of consumer had already developed their tastes and would have been pretty familiar with the regularly published authors and those who were considered to be headliners. Any given name on the cover stood a 50-50 chance of attracting or deterring that reader. You could get a lot for a quarter and a dime back then – almost a beer, almost a movie ticket; Mark Watney would probably like to know that ten pounds of potatoes cost the same as a magazine.

I ponder the wisdom of a promotional campaign that runs the risk of turning your potential customer off, up to fifty percent of the time.

On the other hand, publishers, at least in regards to this demographic, were probably counting on a few other things as well: most fans were rabid fans by necessity. Even if every single author in a given issue was disliked, there was still the editorial and the letter column (often worth the price of admission alone), whatever other features might be included and, of course, the cover, along with the interior illustrations. (Remember those?) Having probably already been through the demise of many prior titles, the experienced fan back then probably had a well-honed sense of historical preservation. All of which would tend to encourage them to ignore front cover unpleasantness.

One thing is for sure though: this segment of the market didn’t have to be sold. They were already bought and paid for. The only competition a magazine faced with this particular buyer was whether or not a competing title was more “attractive” this month. Which suggests that one purpose of the names on the cover was to play one-ups-manship with the other titles.

This then leaves us with two segments – the unrealized fan and the casual reader.

The only difference between these two market segments is that the unrealized fan reader might have heard of an author or two. I stress might, since the novels they might have been exposed to were few and far between and no one was advertising SF magazines on television or radio, nor even in the mass-circulation magazines of the day. You weren’t going to see Isaac Asimov on a Wheaties box (though this might not be a bad idea…), Jack Parr wasn’t interviewing Ray Bradbury and the movies they might have caught rarely, if ever, mentioned the origin of their script.

Space Patrol, Tom Corbett, Tales of Tomorrow (ended this year), some fans might have caught Atom Squad, some kids were maybe watching Johnny Jupiter, Rod Brown was competing with Tom, and it would be several years before Science Fiction Theater, The Twighlight Zone and Men Into Space would grace the small screen; these 1953 television shows did little to elevate the profile of the science fiction author.

Likewise, radio (still a popular medium) wasn’t producing much of serious fan interest either: Dimension X had been off the air for a couple of years, and it would be a couple more before X Minus One would air (both prominently featured stories largely drawn from Astounding Science Fiction). The radio companion for Space Patrol was airing, but, again, any author involved probably tried to keep as low a profile as possible.

The only real benefit any of the magazines might have derived from these other media might have been creating the initial interest in the subject matter. Given the right circumstances, it is entirely possible that a consumer walking past a newsstand would make the connection between a television show featuring outer space and the image of a rocketship on the cover of one of the magazines.

This works, potentially, for the unrealized fan, though it begs a question: why didn’t any of the magazines attempt to capture this television show audience with various forms of tie-in? (Tom Corbett Isn’t the ONLY Space Cadet. We’ve got space cadets in every issue! A New Short Story by the author of the latest Tales of Tomorrow episode!) It could be suggested that most of SF on television back in the day was focused on “kids”, and that the magazines were going after an older audience, but most of the magazines on sale were perceived, at least by the general public, as being kid-stuff too. I can imagine a well-meaning parent, noting their child’s interest in Space Cadets, picking up a copy of Universe, or Science Fiction Plus, or Science Fiction Adventures (check out the cover art) as an attempt to support the kid’s interest. But then again, we’re talking about an era that generally despised science fiction, so it’s more likely that mom or dad would be scheduling homework time during Corbett’s 15 minute episodes….

The casual reader…the only thing I can imagine that would attract them to an SF pulp (or digest) would be the cover art, perhaps reinforced by one of the come-ons. But certainly not the names.

This of course brings us back full circle. It’s pretty well established that the names on the cover did little to help market these titles. Existing fans knew the titles and would pick them up regardless of who was featured; unrealized fans could make no informed judgement about the content, and the casual reader would be attracted by art and possibly blurbs.

So why? Why go to the trouble to select the names, why the belief that doing so was beneficial? There’s probably only two reasons: tradition (magazines had been printing the contents on the cover from the beginning) and ego boo: ego boo for the authors (who were getting paid very little and had only two sources of fan interaction – letters and conventions. Not to mention wanting to keep valued authors on the submission hook. And ego boo for the editors and publishers who got to brag among themselves and play a game of one upsmanship.
