Monday, March 25: Armored Saint, "Hanging Judge"

R.I.P. Dave Prichard (1963-1990)

“Hanging Judge” was one of the first songs Dave Prichard and John Bush wrote while Armored Saint was in between label deals, and before Prichard became critically ill.  And even absent of the latter context, the track reflected the general state of uncertainty hovering over the band: it was a mostly logical progression from what the Saint had been doing over the course of their last 3 records, but there was a palpable anxiety and tension that added a distinct air of discomfort over Bush’s vocals and Prichard’s riffing.  There was also a hunger and resilience that was both new and welcome- they were loathe to admit it given their overall lack of commercial success, but Armored Saint had largely been operating from a place of privilege up to that point, having been signed to a major label before most of their peers and working within that system for their first 5 or so years, so the fire in Bush’s howl was a refreshing jolt that made a more convincing case for his power as a singer than anything else he’d recorded to that point.  Although “Hanging Judge” wasn’t ultimately one of Symbol of Salvation’s major barnburners along the lines of “Reign of Fire”, but it remained significant by virtue of being one of its foundational tracks.
