Giving it the full read, this profile is about how Lea Salonga and Arielle Jacobs contextualize Here Lies Love.
--
For both Jacobs and Salonga, who coincidentally have both played Princess Jasmine in Aladdin (Salonga in the Disney film and Jacobs in the Broadway show), Here Lies Love is the first time they are playing Filipinos on stage. It's a big moment for Jacobs especially because this is her first time leading a Broadway musical. Jacobs says her mom cried tears of joy upon hearing the news. Her grandfather, responded stoically with, "the Dictator..." recalls Jacobs, deepening her voice and saying it with a Filipino accent.
Jacobs is aware that playing Imelda comes with its own share of baggage. “She represents a lot of pain for a lot of people,” Jacobs admits. At the same time, Jacobs has been doing her best to shut out the assumptions, and instead focus on Imelda as a character: a woman who rose to power and then was corrupted by it. “They aren’t born with devil horns,” says Jacobs of dictators like Marcos. “They were born as regular human beings…And then they turn into people who make choices that hurt a lot of people.”
The key thing for Jacobs is that villains don't always know that they are villains. They rationalize their behavior as acceptable. And if Jacobs does her job right, the audience will start the show loving her and end it hating her: "And I'm not liking myself at the end of it, either" she exclaims.
Both actors are also adamant in saying that Here Lies Love does not glorify Imelda Marcos. To them, the musical explores how a dictatorship can take hold, how seductive it seems at the outset. Considering the rise of fascism around the world, such as the election of Donald Trump in America, the two actors think Here Lies Love has only become more relevant since it premiered a decade ago Off-Broadway.

My fan cast of Audrey and Seymour (for a potential little shop remake that would probably never happen)
Don’t have any for the other characters yet.
But.. What do you guys think?

This is now a Spinstress (aka Princess Petra) stan account. I am so in love with the concept of a Disney Princess-esque Spidey Variant, especially since they got Arielle Jacobs to sing the first two pages of her issue. What a fun idea!

Arielle Jacobs, who stars as Imelda Marcos in the Broadway production of David Byrne & Fatboy Slim's musical Here Lies Love, was joined by her cast mates on Good Morning America to perform two songs from the show: the title track and “Eleven Days.” She was then joined by Conrad Ricamora, who stars as Ninoy Aquino, on GMA3 to perform “Opposite Attraction." You can watch them here.

Drew some Here Lies Love fanart while procrastinating on my finals. 🪩✨
I really enjoy listening to the songs, and I adore this unique way of taking a stand against tyranny and corruption through using the art of musical theatre.
(MAJOR DISCLAIMER: I am strongly against the past and current Marcos regimes, the art is mostly of Arielle’s portrayal, rather than of Imelda herself)

I have quite a few photos floating around on my personal account from "Disney Princess - the Concert" in Lancaster PA on April 16th. These are some of my favorites of the cast of the Spring tour 2022. The Disney animations were absolutely breathtaking.

The cast album for Between the Lines recently came out and I was itching to make some art for it! Practice makes perfect and I’m doing my best to try new things and grow as an artist.
Between the Lines is a new musical based on the book of the same name and stars Arielle Jacobs as Delilah, the main character. I’m such a fan of hers and she’s beautiful in the recording! You should check it out! I think it’s a loving adaptation of the book which I also really enjoyed.
Thanks for your support!

HERE LIES LOVE the musical: the finale
On a voter's invite, I re-attended the floor of Here Lies Love on Broadway. Because an audience wrangler noticed I was short and guided me to a stair step, I saw "God Draws Straight" (an ensemble number that notably uses actor-musicians in emotional contrast to an artificial prerecorded score) with a wider perspective.
Last preview on floor, I did NOT see an important stage direction: Arielle Jacobs (Imelda Marcos' actress), Jose Llana (Ferninand Marcos' actor), & Conrad Ricamora (Ninoy Aquino's actor) join "God Draws Straight" as anonymous Filipinos, not wearing politician costumes, joining the People Power Revolution against the Marcos dictatorship.

I already loved “Between the Lines” when it was just a novel.
But seeing Arielle Jacobs on stage, wearing a costume that looks almost identical to what I wore when I was 17 (when I first read the book), singing about using books as an escape, a way to leave behind bullies, a difficult mom, a world that doesn’t really accept who she is and what she wants, it just absolutely hits me so much more.
Delilah’s always been one of my favorite book characters, but the way Arielle plays her, the mannerisms, the nervous tics, the clothes, the glasses, it’s like i’m seeing my high school self on stage, and jfc if that doesn’t absolutely make her song s and her story affect me in a completely different and entirely more real way.

So Hi guys, I just found out that one of my favourite books was made into a musical which is ‘Between the Lines’ by Jodi Picoult and if you’ve ever been a teenager who fell inlove with a character in a book and wished that the main character would step out of the book and also fall inlove with you, then you’re going to love this musical. So please if you guys want to do something for me, go to youtube and tiktok, try to hype up as much as you can ‘Between the Lines: The musical’. Comment in the videos, support the production, I promise you’re going to love it.
I wish productions like these could get more attention, because in a world full of cash grab remakes, the fact that Between the Lines has been made into a musical, has to be one of the best things that happened to my Musical Theater loving self. Here's a bit of the lyrics to what’s becoming my favorite song right now ‘Another Chapter’ From Between the Lines the Musical [Chorus] And so I read another chapter, another chapter So I can be miles away And if I read another chapter, another chapter At least I can get there today Life's nothing like it was before But it's nothing that I can't ignore As long as there’s another chapter, another chapter
Another world to explore
And that’s the tea
