back to december and enchanted? 💜

back to december: if you could go back and relive a part of your life, what would it be? when i was 19, i wrecked my car, so i moved in with this boy i'd started seeing a few weeks ago because we all interned together and his roommate was the only person i knew with a car. i loved riding in their backseat, listening to them debate tech news. i'd cook dinner with his roommate every night (you could request anything and he'd learn and try it; it'd turn out good, almost without fail). we'd watch house md while eating, and it would always gross his roommate out enough to compain, but he never got up and left. i had a big friend group of eight guys, and they loved me enough to hang out almost every day of the week, including a weekend road trip that i organised. it was probably the best summer of my life.

enchanted: what’s a magical moment you’ve experienced? my first boyfriend (same boy as above) and i were on a cinema date. the movie was agonisingly slow. we mutually agreed to walk out of the theatre together and just see where the night took us. on a late night in downtown new york city, the world felt open and free, and there was something poetic about that night. time was very precious to us because we were long-distance, so it felt good to be able to take that time back.

Haha thank you! Honestly writing for Don has been really fun and I do intend to do it more in the future. I've been considering writing a short one-shot for him, but that will have to wait until after I finish here within these walls. as you're served course after course, you can see why his restaurant has its three star rating. each dish is presented with delicacy and finesse, the textures and flavours exquisitely balanced in harmony, setting luxurious and servers graceful. but as with any work of art, it's subjective to the consumer. and quite frankly? there's nothing particularly special about kang yeosang's cuisines that make them stand out in the long list of three-star restaurants

and you're honest with such. you publish your review and it quickly garners attention because you're one of the first critics to stand on the other side of the fence in terms of what kang yeosang's restaurant can deliver to its patrons

yeosang has had plenty of critics, journalists, bloggers and tourists review his restaurant before; people with huge social media followings and people who simply review for their own keepsake. regardless, he's never been concerned over the reviews. he knows his restaurant and his skills are the best out there. and yet, it would be a lie to say that yeosang is indifferent to your review

one of his staff had passed him a tablet, your published words glaring on the screen. yeosang thumbs through it noncommittally before thrusting the tablet back into the wringing hands of his staff. "you think this shit is worth any of my time?" he scoffs and the employee scurries away

Very true unfortunately ☹️ a lot of people have also convinced themselves that he was actually just fine out there and use him as a poster child for why releases work.

It’s possible releasing him killed him. He was only in the wild for about a year before he died, and he was never a robustly healthy whale. But his cause of death was pneumonia, something that routinely kills both wild and managed cetaceans. He was also 27, close to the average life expectancy of 30 years for male orcas (though they can and do live longer, and nowadays there are multiple 30+ year old male orcas in human care).

To me, the real tragedy of Keiko isn’t that he died. That’s a big part of it—I still do think he would’ve lived longer if he hadn’t been released. It’s that he died alone. This incredibly social animal died alone because people decided it was better for him to die in an attempt to reunite him with wild orcas than to let him have the company of humans—which is what he wanted.
