The long bezzle
Tumblr media
Going to Defcon this weekend? I’m giving a keynote, “An Audacious Plan to Halt the Internet’s Enshittification and Throw it Into Reverse,” on Saturday at 12:30pm, followed by a book signing at the No Starch Press booth at 2:30pm!
https://info.defcon.org/event/?id=50826
Tumblr media
When it comes to the modern world of enshittified, terrible businesses, no addition to your vocabulary is more essential than "bezzle," JK Galbraith's term for "the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it"
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/09/accounting-gimmicks/#unter
The bezzle is contained by two forces.
First, Stein's Law: "Anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop."
Second, Keynes's: "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."
On the one hand, extremely badly run businesses that strip all the value out of the firm, making things progressively worse for its suppliers, workers and customers will eventually fail (Stein's Law).
On the other hand, as the private equity sector has repeatedly demonstrated, there are all kinds of accounting tricks, subsidies and frauds that can animate a decaying, zombie firm long after its best-before date (Keynes's irrational markets):
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/02/plunderers/#farben
One company that has done an admirable job of balancing on a knife edge between Stein and Keynes is Verizon, a monopoly telecoms firm that has proven that a business can remain large, its products relied upon by millions, its stock actively traded and its market cap buoyant, despite manifest, repeated incompetence and waste on an unimaginable scale.
This week, Verizon shut down Bluejeans, an also-ran videoconferencing service the company bought for $400 million in 2020 as a panic-buy to keep up with Zoom. As they lit that $400 mil on fire, Verizon praised its own vision, calling Bluejeans "an award-winning product that connects our customers around the world, but we have made this decision due to the changing market landscape":
https://9to5google.com/2023/08/08/verizon-bluejeans-shutting-down/
Writing for Techdirt, Karl Bode runs down a partial list of all the unbelievably terrible business decisions Verizon has made without losing investor confidence or going under, in a kind of tribute to Keynes's maxim:
https://www.techdirt.com/2023/08/10/verizon-fails-again-shutters-attempted-zoom-alternative-bluejeans-after-paying-400-million-for-it/
Remember Go90, the "dud" streaming service launched in 2015 and shuttered in 2018? You probably don't, and neither (apparently) do Verizon's shareholders, who lost $1.2 billion on this folly:
https://www.techdirt.com/2018/07/02/verizons-sad-attempt-to-woo-millennials-falls-flat-face/
Then there was Verizon's bid to rescue Redbox with a new joint-venture streaming service, Redbox Instant, launched 2012, killed in 2014, $450,000,000 later:
https://variety.com/2014/digital/news/verizon-redbox-to-pull-plug-on-video-streaming-service-1201321484/
Then there was Sugarstring, a tech "news" website where journalists were prohibited from saying nice things about Net Neutrality or surveillance – born 2014, died 2014:
https://www.theverge.com/2014/12/2/7324063/verizon-kills-off-sugarstring
An app store, started in 2010, killed in 2012:
https://www.theverge.com/2012/11/5/3605618/verizon-apps-store-closing-january-2013
Vcast, 2005-2012, yet another failed streaming service (pray that someday you find someone who loves you as much as Verizon's C-suite loves doomed streaming services):
https://venturebeat.com/media/verizon-vcast-shutting-down/
And the granddaddy of them all, Oath, Verizon's 2017, $4.8 billion acquisition of Yahoo/AOL, whose name refers to the fact that the company's mismanagement provoked involuntary, protracted swearing from all who witnessed the $4.6 billion write-down the company took a year later:
https://www.techdirt.com/2018/12/12/if-youre-surprised-verizons-aol-yahoo-face-plant-you-dont-know-verizon/
Verizon isn't just bad at being a phone company that does non-phone-company things – it's incredibly bad at being a phone company, too. As Bode points out, Verizon's only real competency is in capturing its regulators at the FCC:
https://www.techdirt.com/2017/05/02/new-verizon-video-blatantly-lies-about-whats-happening-to-net-neutrality/
And sucking up massive public subsidies from rubes in the state houses of New York:
https://www.techdirt.com/2017/03/14/new-york-city-sues-verizon-fiber-optic-bait-switch/
New Jersey:
https://www.techdirt.com/2014/04/25/verizon-knows-youre-sucker-takes-taxpayer-subsidies-broadband-doesnt-deliver-lobbies-to-drop-requirements/
and Pennsylvania:
https://www.techdirt.com/2017/06/15/verizon-gets-wrist-slap-years-neglecting-broadband-networks-new-jersey-pennsylvania/
Despite all this, and vast unfunded liabilities like remediating the population-destroying lead in their cables – they remain solvent:
https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/verizon-sued-by-investors-over-lead-cables-environmental-statements-2023-08-02/
Verizon has remained irrational longer than any short seller could remain solvent.
Short-sellers – who bet against companies and get paid when their stock prices go down – get a bad rap: billionaire shorts were the villains of the Gamestop squeeze, accused of running negative PR campaigns against beloved businesses to drive them under and pay their bets off:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/30/meme-stocks/#stockstonks
But shorts can do the lord's work. Writing for Bloomberg, Kathy Burton tells the story of Nate Anderson, whose Hindenburg Research has cost some of the world's wealthiest people over $99 billion by publishing investigative reports on their balance-sheet shell-games just this year:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-08-06/how-much-did-hindenburg-make-from-shorting-adani-dorsey-icahn
Anderson started off trying to earn a living as a SEC whistleblower, identifying financial shenanigans and collecting the bounties on offer, but that didn't pan out. So he turned his forensic research skills to preparing mediagenic, viral reports on the scams underpinning the financial boasts of giant companies…after taking a short position in them.
This year, Anderson's targets have included Carl Icahn, whose company lost $17b in market cap after Anderson accused it of overvaluing its assets. He went after the world's fourth-richest man, Gautam Adani, accusing him of "accounting fraud and stock manipulation," wiping out 34% of his net worth. He took on Jack Dorsey, whose payment processor Square renamed itself Block and went all in on the cryptocurrency bezzle, lopping 16% off its share price.
Burton points out that Anderson's upside for these massive bloodletting was comparatively modest. A perfectly timed exit from the $17b Icahn report would have netted $56m. What's more, Anderson faces legal threats and worse – one short seller was attacked by a man wearing brass-knuckles, an attack attributed to her short activism.
Shorts are lauded as one of capitalism's self-correcting mechanisms, and Hindenberg certainly has taken some big, successful swings at some of the great bezzles of our time. But as Verizon shows, shorts alone can't discipline a market where profits and investor confidence are totally decoupled from competence or providing a decent product or service.

I’m kickstarting the audiobook for “The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation,” a Big Tech disassembly manual to disenshittify the web and bring back the old, good internet. It’s a DRM-free book, which means Audible won’t carry it, so this crowdfunder is essential. Back now to get the audio, Verso hardcover and ebook:

tuesday again 10/17/2023
started explaining why this one is a little lighter than last week's gallery wall behemoth bc of a uhhhh kind of dire week, personally and professionally speaking, but then realized when fic authors do that in front of chapters i don't actually care or require an excuse from them, im just delighted to have a new chapter.
listening
this is a deeply cheesy little folk song but the lyrics "man you name it and if we ain’t got it: we’ll get it" gave me a sensible chuckle.
youtube
now for a moment to expound upon houston: they truly have imported every possible food service establishment. the two chains i miss most from jersey, jersey mikes submarine sandwiches and 7-11 gas stations, are both here. i get that this is the fifth largest metro area in the US or whatever but both of these companies are SO niche. absolutely bonkers. spotify.
i think this started autoplaying after a playlist inspired by f/allout: new v/egas came on??
-
reading
i originally had a very mean-spirited graf about the utility of a pool in northwestern massachusetts and the kind of person who can comfortably lose $31k, but it is genuinely awful that there are no rules around zelle. that money goes into a black fucking hole and there's no way to get it back, which is not the case for any other kind of recognized money except cryptocurrency
Did we confront Gary Kruglitz [the pool contractor]? Yes we did. We marched right into his office and grilled him hard until he defeated us with a simple and probing question: What's a zelle? It defied belief, we quickly realized, that a man who had been trapped in technological amber since the Nixon era was running a cyberscam designed to come between us and our money out of an AOL account.
-
watching
Tumblr media
Van Helsing (2004, dir. Sommers). this movie is horrible. this movie is terrific. i don't have anything to say about this movie bc i was distracted by equal opportunity tits and asses the entire time. the time of the “Kate Beckinsale in a corset” movie genre is long over but GOD. watched with my sister bc it's leaving tubi soon
playing
one week i will have the energy to try New Thing but until i do it’s genshin. there's a poetry event that has terribly boring minigames, but the story quest has finally tied a bow on a piece of folkore we came across in the very first release so that was fun!
Tumblr media
wrapping up some stuff in sumeru bc im running out of map pins, this game has done one of the things i hate most: progress-locking one extremely long and tedious collectible hunt (the music gates) behind another extremely long and tedious collectible hunt (the robots locked in the vines). the next time i see one of those little fucking budget koroks i am going to drop kick it into the sun. what the fuck is the circumference of teyvat anyway. it feels like we have explored so little of this planet's surface
Tumblr media
i have graphics turned down pretty low bc of performance issues on my elderly laptop and this is still such a remarkably pretty game. look at this big estuary leading off into the distance
-
making
i wildly overextended myself this week, partially bc im trying to take advantage of this brief post-covid heightened immunity. lot of dinners. lot of late nights. on top of that BOTH of my siblings were in town for unrelated professional reasons this week :) no overlap so we did not have a nice fambly dinner :( but did have pretty okay separate dinners :) if they could learn to fucking communicate their trave plans and the number of peope that will be showing up at my home that would also be pretty okay >:(
one of the party games i played this week asked the question “what could you give a 40-minute PowerPoint presentation on” and i started saying facts about the downfall of the penn central railroad and they very nicely let me continue saying facts about the downfall of the penn central railroad, the largest bankruptcy in US history until ENRON, until the round timer went off.
i have some thoughts about Train Guys and how it's very easy to fall into being a Train Guy, bc there's a very easy template to follow, and there's a lot of Train Guy content, and have i been doing this bc i actually like trains, or bc it's easy to listen to Well There's Your Problem on repeat bc it's familiar and comforting, or do i just really really really fucking hate flying?
who could possibly say.

mackintosh update: allowed herself to be scooped up by my brother (who she met at christmas and loves) but did NOT allow herself to be pet by the strangers in his company. did hang out in the middle of the floor observing tho. a regular little extroverted socialite!

Modern Day Head Cannons
I like to imagine the lost boys characters having modern day quirks since I like to write in the present time. So I compiled a list of random head cannons for each of the characters from the vamps to gramps, on random quirks they would have in the modern day.
David:
Is quite awful with technology. Like he has a phone but cannot change the wallpaper for it. So the other vamps are constantly changing his wallpaper to stupid little things
Though, he would be great with slang. He would know all the up-to-date slang just from reading people's minds and listening to them talk. The vamps would see some new slang or abbreviation and David would know exactly what it meant
His only social media would be a facebook profile he made in like 2010 that has 0 updates since the day he made it. Also it has his real birthdate on it.
He'd also be opposed to his face being on the internet. Like, he doesn't mind pictures as long as they're not posted. He's paranoid like a parent in 2008 who's children are getting a test of the world wide web. But since he doesn't have social media nor can really work a phone, the others will still post stuff of him without him knowing
Dwayne:
Dwayne would have his own Etsy shop for oddities. He'd find and clean bones and sell them online and make a surprising amount of money. Like it started as a little fun thing back when Etsy first began, and then next thing he knew he became very popular.
He treats his little shop without a care, and never responds to messages or actively tells people to fuck off, but people keep on buying. He's a star seller (somehow without responding to messages) and has 5 star reviews.
I also feel that he would LOVE fanfiction. He would read a book and then immediately have a ship and look up fanfiction for it. Sometimes he would write fanfiction, but he never feels like his work is good enough so he doesn't post it.
Since they don't have power at the cave, he'd be the one who would bring all the electronics to a cafe to get them charged. He would love his little cafe trips and it gives him a chance to have a break from the others
Marko:
I feel like he would be experimenting with different pronouns, and the other vampires would be super supportive of him and do their best to ensure they use the proper ones.
Marko would have ALL of the social media. Everything. He'd have facebook, instagram, tiktok, tumblr, twitter, everything. You know he had a MySpace and was in the aol chatrooms. He'd have a shit ton of email addresses as well so he could have multiple accounts.
He knows every vine reference
He posts at least a couple times an hour for whatever pops in his head. He's been temporarily banned on most of his accounts for posting gore-y stuff that was flagged
He has a surprising amount of followers and he jokes about being a vampire all of the time
Paul:
Paul would love pictures on his phone. He would have so many pictures of the other vampires and anything that he sees.
He would also have all of the music apps, and the paid versions specifically. Youtube Red. Spotify Premium. He's got apps to create music, though he's really bad at it.
He and Marko definitely tried to make a youtube channel and it did not work out very well
He also loves to make memes. He and Marko have thousands of saved memes on their phones of things that happen in their day to day life
Star:
Star accidentally became very popular on tiktok for a stupid little video she never expected to get any views. She ends up as a mini influencer with little videos that she spends twenty seconds making
She's also slightly jealous about Dwayne's Etsy shop doing well as she tried jewelry making but nothing was selling. And yet she was always adamant about good customer service and Dwayne ignores most of his messages.
She also has her own bike at this point and somehow she's more scary on it than the other boys
Michael:
He loves cars. He's the kind of guy that would go to car shows and he'd drag the other vampires with him. Paul would take pictures of his favorite cars and print them out for him.
Michael would also have a part-time overnight job to be able to afford getting a nice car of his own
He's also not a fan of memes and tries very hard not to end up in one of Paul or Marko's memes, though it happens so frequently he just has no idea
Sam:
Sam would have amazing fashion. With access to the internet he'd be copying a lot of famous people's styles
He'd be obsessed with pinterest. So many ideas saved, fashion styles, etc.
He'd also have some self image issues that he'd need to work through
He really, really wants to go to a convention but with his family struggling with money he's never been able to
Laddie:
He'd want a cell phone so bad. Star and Dwayne refuse to buy him one because they're afraid of internet safety. But Marko and Paul are happy to led over their phones for Laddie to play games on
David definitely leaves his phone "unattended" for Laddie to take and use
Sometimes David leaves his phone with Laddie so Laddie can text the other vampires when they're out
Edgar:
OBSESSED with Fortnite. Like so obsessed. He's certain Donald Mustard is some sort of undead being and hypnotizing children with the video game. But yet Edgar plays it every moment of free time he has
He also is on top of every conspiracy theory. He believes anything that he reads on the internet, even if it sounds a little far fetched
He also most definitely follows Marko's social media and has zero idea that Marko's a vampire
Alan:
Alan likes Fortnite too, but is not as obsessed about it as Edgar is. He's not as quick to jump onto conspiracy theories as Edgar is, but if Edgar gives him a good reason he'll believe it.
He and Edgar most definitely send each other memes/videos of toxic family relationships and they both will give a brief laugh and look at their deadbeat parents
He's the one that makes friends and brings them to Edgar so that Edgar can have a friend. They don't have many friends, but all their friends are ride-or-die types
Max:
His video store he would have switched to be a tech store so he can still continue to get the personal information of people in the area. People come to buy big ticket items and he can collect their addresses for deliveries, or payment plans, etc.
He'd be very informational about technology in general, but you'd find that he still has a flip phone and does not own any sort of modern piece of technology
He constantly warns the younger vampires about the dangers of the internet
Lucy:
She'd be on a lot of mom blogs, trying to relate with other mothers who have sons
I feel like she'd also be the kind of mother who would have lots of pictures of her children growing up and she'd look at them a lot, or share them online.
She's also definitely a facebook mom who doesn't post updates much, but she's always looking at other people's posts and commenting. She'd also low-key try to stalk her children's new friends all the time. She'd find David's facebook and she'd be like why does it say he was born in the 1800's. And we all just hope she doesn't find any of Marko's accounts
Gramps:
Gramps would LOVE the modern day taxidermy community. He'd be on a very niche online taxidermy forum (not to name names, but taxidermy. net).
He'd love the new forms for taxidermy that he could order online that make his life a lot easier and no asbestos.
He'd still know about all the different vampires in the area

The more I fly with an airline, the nicer they are to me. I get upgrades and free drinks.
The longer I’m with my cable company the worse they are to me. The price creeps up a few dollars every few months. Oh, I’ll deal with this some other time, but I’m not going to worry about $2 right now. It’s the frog in the pot of water on the stove business model.
Service went out last night. I tried the usual online help/chat.
Q: How many cable boxes are not working?
A: Two
Q: Select which one it is.
There were other similar dead ends. Finally I had enough of “Please unplug your set for 30 seconds” and called a human. Nowadays calling a person isn’t necessarily less aggravating for me than trying to “chat” with a computer, but it couldn’t be worse than the chat.
Many years ago, with AOL dial-up (eeeeeee-awwwwww, boing, boing) service, I had some problem. Via my landline I reached a techie guy in the US who was genuinely eager to help. Maybe it was his first week on the job.
When he said, “Oh Dude! I see the problem! Here’s what we gotta do...” His demeanor made me smile. Some people HATE being called dear, sweetie, or dude, but I sort of like that informality in some settings. A grocery store cashier recently said to me, in a bit of a Southern drawl, “Hey hun, you dropped your card.” It cracked me up.
Today’s help desk person was nice. It’s frustrating to be asked to re-do all the steps I tried on my own. They have a script to stick to; I get it. I can also picture this iknstruction in the script: “Be sure to thank the customer at least every 2 minutes for being one of our valued customers.”
From some research I did online for my particular error code, away from the cable company’s web site, I suspected a billing snafu, despite my last payment posting on time and no new payment being due yet. One brief error message on my TV even indicated something about billing, but I wasn’t able to recreate that message.
I asked the person about billing. “No, no. You’re account is in good standing. And thank you for being one of our valued customers, Mr. Bob.”
Then we waited on the fifth or sixth reboot. She also indicated she was starting the process to “escalate the ticket,” because nothing was solving the problem.
She must have sensed a little frustration on my part, though I was very polite the whole time. She ended up changing something that cut my bill a little and even bumped up internet speed (despite my current speed being awesome already).
I had to acknowledge the billing change via a text she sent me. The moment I clicked Yes my service was immediately restored. I said she no longer need to escalate the ticket to a higher level. She seemed happy the problem was resolved. I bet she wondered what happened too.
It’s not a free drink and more legroom. I appreciate the discount. Except it started with a problem, not because I’ve spent a lot of money there over the years.

The BFF and I are reminiscing about the early days of computers and the internet, and I have to share a few observations.
My first "computer" was a TI-99/4a, made by Texas Instruments (the calculator people). This was in 1983. It was similar to an Atari or Commodore-64 in that it could play games, but it could also be added on to with various hardware. My parents got hardcore into this. Aside from learning about programming, we also had a 300 baud acoustic modem - the kind you literally put the phone receiver on - and I was able to access local bulletin boards and talk to strangers from far away! V e r y s l o w l y. We later got more peripherals like a graphics card and a big old dot-matrix printer. I remember writing school papers on it.
The first computer that belonged to me was an Apple Mac LC that I got for college. It was super expensive and I still have the base somewhere, but the monitor is long gone. I went online with that thing with an external modem... I think the first one I got was a 14.4k. Yes, I did the whole AOL thing.
Internet services were preceded by these sort of walled-garden services like AOL (America Online), Compuserve, and Prodigy. I remember getting into RP forums on Prodigy (specifically for Pern and the Dragon Prince series), running up a huge bill, and getting it canceled. You could chat on these and participate in other activities like games (I remember winning a copy of one of Terry Brooks' novels on Prodigy, but there were no websites or anything like that.
For some time, when the first Internet service providers (ISPs) came into being, I worked at one, answering phones and doing some very basic tech support (literally "have you tried turning it off and on again"). I did billing as well, which was when I first learned that people just... didn't think they had to pay their bills. Three months of non-payment and their service would get cut off and they'd call in, livid. It was an experience. We also played lots of interoffice matches of DOOM and Quake, so it balanced out. I used to use my office computer to download sound clips from movies and parts of songs.
I only used Usenet a little, but it was a thriving community full of various posters and groups. My favorite group was probably alt.barney.die.die.die.
While working at the above ISP, I had to make a website so that I knew some HTML, since they actually wanted people to help customers with that. (I should add there were only like five employees there; the guy who started it up basically was using investment money from his dad. I also remember he tried to make me learn how to mess with circuit boards. I still don't know why he wanted to teach me, but no, I did not retain one single thing from that.) Anyway, I learned basic HTML, and I still have a website today that still uses exceedingly basic HTML.
Can you imagine calling Comcast today and going "yes, I'm struggling with this bit of javascript here, I expect you to help me."
No, because even if you pay them four times what you paid my ISP back then (I think it was around $30 a month for a dedicated DNS), they would tell you to look up a tutorial on youtube.
I don't remember when we switched to 24/7 connections and cable internet and broadband and everything, but I can tell you that I remember getting online, checking my email, going on IRC for a little bit, looking at websites, maybe doing some RP on a MUSH, and then logging off and shutting it down at the end of the night. We didn't expect everyone to be THERE all the time.
Although while I was still with the ISP, I used to get on PernMUSH NC first thing in the morning and sit there all day so my name would be at the bottom of the user list. Because that was a powerful status to have.
My ex and I would trade off computer time. We didn't even play games that needed to be connected to the Internet. We did other things. Can you imagine?
I downloaded So Much Shit from Napster. So. Much. (A lot of it was mislabeled garbage, too. You wouldn't believe how many crappy "parody" songs got attributed to Weird Al.) Didn't use Limewire nearly as much because it was so riddled with viruses. Damn you, Lars Ulrich.
Those days were wild. You could find the worst shit online, but also some of the best. People used Tripod and Geocities and mailing lists and Usenet, just every kind of thing to connect to each other. I had a site just for my fanfic, and I hosted friends on it and even designed their sites. Before AO3, before Livejournal, we were making it work any way we could. I still remember the Outside the Lines mailing list for comic fandom and how people would post full fics on there. And others would complain that not enough Dark Horse comics were getting fics. Some things never do change.
We also regularly got secondary phone lines so that we could use the modem and not be interrupted by phone calls, or have people scream that they'd been trying to call us for hours. Everything had to be connected by wires. If you wanted to game with your friends, you took your PC (and monitor and anything else you needed) over to their house, plugged in and had a LAN party.
Or if you just wanted to browse the Internet without your own PC, you'd go to an Internet cafe and rent one for a couple hours. Sit there, have your coffee and go online.
Everything is different these days. Everyone is connected, online, all the time, and you're practically not allowed to be disconnected. You must be available at all times. As nice as it is to get all our information quickly, I do kind of miss when the Internet wasn't so omnipresent. I could do without what social media has done to us, too. And I really miss MUDs and MUSHes. Text based games where you could RP or just wander around killing mobs.
Anyway, it's been an interesting experience growing up through all of this. I never would have imagined having a phone with all my music and the Internet on it, but they're just ubiquitous now. Strange to think of not having it everywhere I go, and WiFi for everything.

AOL VPN integration
AOL VPN integration provides a secure and encrypted connection for users accessing the internet through AOL services. VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows users to browse the web anonymously, safeguarding their online activities from prying eyes. Integrating VPN into AOL services enhances the overall privacy and security of users' internet experience.
By incorporating VPN into AOL, users can enjoy a higher level of anonymity online. This is particularly important for those who prioritize their privacy and want to protect their personal information from potential hackers or surveillance. AOL VPN integration also gives users the ability to access geo-restricted content by masking their IP address with one from the VPN server location, allowing them to bypass censorship and access content that may otherwise be blocked in their region.
Furthermore, the encryption provided by VPN ensures that users' data remains secure while browsing the internet through AOL services. This is especially critical when using public Wi-Fi networks, as VPN encrypts the connection and prevents unauthorized access to sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details, and personal communications.
Overall, AOL VPN integration offers users a holistic solution to enhance their online security and privacy. By utilizing a VPN service within the AOL platform, users can browse the internet with confidence, knowing that their data is encrypted and their identity is protected.
AOL VPN features
AOL VPN, or Virtual Private Network, offers a range of features designed to enhance online privacy and security. Here's a closer look at some of the key features provided by AOL VPN:
Encryption: AOL VPN employs strong encryption protocols to secure your internet connection. This encryption ensures that your data remains private and protected from hackers, government surveillance, and other malicious entities.
Anonymous Browsing: With AOL VPN, users can browse the web anonymously. By masking your IP address and encrypting your internet traffic, AOL VPN helps to maintain your anonymity online, protecting your identity and personal information from being tracked or monitored.
Access to Restricted Content: AOL VPN allows users to bypass geo-restrictions and access content that may be blocked or restricted in their region. Whether you're traveling abroad or simply want to access region-locked websites and streaming services, AOL VPN can help you access the content you want, when you want it.
Wi-Fi Security: Public Wi-Fi networks are notoriously insecure, making them prime targets for cybercriminals. AOL VPN protects users when connected to public Wi-Fi hotspots by encrypting their internet traffic, preventing unauthorized access to their data and ensuring a secure browsing experience.
Multi-Device Support: AOL VPN offers multi-device support, allowing users to protect all of their internet-connected devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers, with a single VPN subscription. This ensures that your data is consistently protected, regardless of which device you're using.

Whether you need help setting up the VPN on your device or troubleshooting a connection problem, AOL VPN's customer support team is available around the clock to provide assistance.
Overall, AOL VPN offers a comprehensive suite of features designed to enhance online privacy, security, and freedom. With its strong encryption, anonymous browsing capabilities, and access to restricted content, AOL VPN is a valuable tool for anyone looking to safeguard their online activities.
AOL VPN functionality
AOL VPN functionality enables users to enhance their online security and privacy while browsing the internet. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which creates a secure connection between the user's device and the internet. By using an AOL VPN, users can protect their sensitive data, such as passwords, personal information, and browsing history, from potential cyber threats and hackers.
One of the key features of AOL VPN functionality is the ability to encrypt the user's internet traffic. This encryption helps in preventing third parties from intercepting the data transmitted between the user's device and the websites they visit. As a result, users can browse the internet anonymously without worrying about their online activities being tracked or monitored.
Moreover, AOL VPN functionality allows users to access geo-restricted content easily. By connecting to a VPN server located in a different country, users can bypass censorship and access websites and streaming services that may be blocked in their region. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who want to watch their favorite shows or access online content not available in their country.
Additionally, by using an AOL VPN, users can maintain their anonymity online. VPNs hide the user's IP address, making it difficult for websites and online services to track their location or identify them. This increased privacy can help users avoid targeted advertisements and tracking cookies, leading to a more seamless and secure browsing experience.
In conclusion, AOL VPN functionality provides users with essential tools to safeguard their online activities, access restricted content, and maintain their privacy and anonymity while browsing the internet. By utilizing an AOL VPN, users can enjoy a more secure and unrestricted online experience.
AOL VPN compatibility
Title: Enhancing Your Online Security: AOL VPN Compatibility Explained
In an era where online privacy and security are paramount, many internet users are turning to virtual private networks (VPNs) to safeguard their digital activities. AOL, a longstanding player in the internet world, has garnered attention for its compatibility with VPN services. Let's delve into the details of AOL VPN compatibility and why it matters for your online experience.
First and foremost, it's crucial to understand what a VPN does. Essentially, a VPN encrypts your internet connection, shielding your online activities from prying eyes such as hackers, government agencies, or even your internet service provider (ISP). By routing your connection through secure servers located around the world, a VPN masks your IP address and provides anonymity online.
Now, let's talk about AOL's compatibility with VPNs. AOL, known for its email and internet services, works seamlessly with most VPN providers. Whether you're using AOL Mail, browsing the web, or accessing AOL's other services, you can enhance your security by connecting to a VPN.
One of the primary benefits of using a VPN with AOL is the added layer of security it offers. Whether you're accessing your AOL account from a public Wi-Fi hotspot or simply want to browse the web anonymously, a VPN ensures that your data remains private and protected.
Furthermore, AOL VPN compatibility extends to various devices and platforms, including desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Whether you're using Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS, you can easily configure your device to connect to a VPN and enjoy enhanced security while using AOL services.
In conclusion, AOL VPN compatibility is an essential consideration for anyone concerned about their online privacy and security. By using a VPN with AOL, you can safeguard your digital activities and enjoy a more secure browsing experience, whether you're checking your email, surfing the web, or accessing other online services.
AOL VPN privacy settings
If you're using an AOL VPN, it's important to understand how to adjust your privacy settings to ensure your online activities remain secure and private.
One of the key aspects of protecting your privacy while using a VPN is to ensure that your connection is encrypted. This means that all of the data you send and receive over the internet is scrambled, making it virtually impossible for anyone to intercept and decipher your information.
When using an AOL VPN, you can typically adjust your privacy settings to choose the level of encryption that best suits your needs. Some VPNs offer different encryption protocols, such as OpenVPN or L2TP/IPsec, each with its own level of security and speed.
Additionally, you may also have the option to enable features like a kill switch, which automatically disconnects your internet connection if the VPN becomes compromised. This helps to prevent any data leaks in case the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.
Furthermore, you can often configure your VPN to route your internet traffic through servers in different locations around the world. This can help to mask your actual IP address and location, enhancing your online privacy and anonymity.
Overall, by understanding and adjusting your AOL VPN privacy settings, you can take significant steps towards safeguarding your online activities and personal data from prying eyes. Stay aware of the available options and choose the settings that best align with your privacy and security preferences.
