remembering that Eric Heisserer wanted to do Six of Crows from the beginning but netflix bought the rights to just shadow and bone, he said he'd only be involved if he could do Six of Crows, then netflix bought the rights to everything and said do both. again said "do both" in s2. so uhhh it really looks like they're penalizing the cast & crew for a decision THEY made lmao

Somebody Else (Sodapop Curtis x Reader. Part 1)
Tumblr media
Sodapop Curtis, Y/F/N, and Steve Randle have always been best friends. Now, one Summer, and a messy love triangle might threaten that friendship.
Word Count: 2,500+
Warnings: none, just slight make out scene? kind of? lots of fluff. no cursing except ass lol
Authors note: Hey guys! I’m back. I’m so thankful to all of you who liked my recent fan fics about the Dolan Twins. I’m new to writing fan fiction and have had a hard time finding motivation to write sometimes. I’m on Summer vacation now though, and I have so much sitting in my drafts I no longer have any excuses. So I’m gonna try to be more active! Writing is truly one of the only things that brings me joy so I want to do it a lot more. Anyways, I’m planning for this to be multiple parts if successful. So please show it some love! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my work <3 it truly means the world. Love you guys! p.s you’re amazing and a glowing goddess and i love you. remember that!
*****
There was nothing quite as enjoyable for Y/N then a Summer night in with her gang. Two-Bit would always be cracking stupid jokes, Dally would usually be causing some sort of trouble, and when Darry wasn’t too tired, he was always there to try to keep everyone under control. Ponyboy and Johnny were like the little brothers Y/N never had, and Steve and Soda were her best friends.
Being the only girl in the gang, it was inevitable that most of the guys would take every opportunity to flirt with her. Y/N was pretty, that was something everyone around her could see from the moment they laid eyes on her. Despite her being a greaser, the Soc boys still hit on her at school, whistled at her when she walked by, but she just ignored it. Even the Soc girls respected her to some degree, occasionally stopping her in the halls to compliment her skirt, or partnering up with her on assignments when they didn’t know anyone else in the class. However, Y/N understood her role in society, she was a greaser, who might have been a soc had things been a little different for her family. But she wouldn’t trade what she had now with the gang for anything, especially not to become some stuck up rich kid who thinks she’s better than everyone.
Johnny and Ponyboy were young and shy, and although sometimes they would definitely blush when she complimented them, or brushed their arm, they never made a move. Darry, was a couple years older than Y/N and just a little too mature for her. But Two-Bit, Dally, and Steve really enjoyed messing around and flirting with her. Sodapop, despite being the biggest flirt of the gang, hardly ever flirted with Y/N, making her suppress her feelings for him. Truthfully, she had always had a crush on him, but she knew it was pointless. He had groups of beautiful Soc girls throwing themselves at him everyday, why would he choose her?
Tonight, everyone was hanging at the Curtis house, preparing to watch a scary movie that was about to play on the television. The gang sat spread out across the floor and couches, Johnny, Ponyboy and Dally settled on the floor, Darry had taken the armchair in the corner of the room, on the shorter side of the couch Two-Bit had sprawled his whole body across it, leaving Y/N to squeeze in between Steve and Sodapop on the other side.
Everyone was still joking around and yelling, as it was still a few minutes before the movie came on. An argument had broken out about who needed to get up to make the popcorn.
“Excuse me, I worked all day, to provide for my kid brothers, Dallas Winston you don’t even attend school!” Darry quipped.
“Oh, fine Darrel, you shouldn’t have to get it, but I worked a whole day at the DX, and I do not find it fair that I should have to, either...Two-Bit should!” Steve replied.
Knowing this would not end soon, nor well, Y/N once again acted as the stand in mom for the group, getting up without complaint to retrieve the popcorn.
“You guys are children,” she rolled her eyes as she stood up and began the short walk to the kitchen.
A chorus of, “Thank you, Y/N” rang out from the other room. With an additional, “since you’re up would you mind getting me a beer?” from Two-Bit, and a “and could I get a coke?” from Dallas.
“Yeah, if you get off your lazy asses and get in here to get it yourself.” Following her remark, laughter erupted before Y/N heard someone else enter the kitchen. She was still making the popcorn when she glanced over her shoulder to see Two-Bit heading to the refrigerator.
“Aww, Doll, I don’t want you to think were trying to take you for granted, I know we make fun of ya but we really are mighty thankful you stick around.” He softly says with a sincerity in his voice that isn't typically heard.
Y/N sighed then smiled, “I know, grab me a coke while you’re at it?”
A few seconds later he comes up behind her, placing the drink besides her and lightly pinching her ass. Y/N turns around blushing, giving him a slap on the shoulder. “Two-Bit!” she giggles, embarrassed.
“That’s my name.” He gives her a grin and a wink before returning to his seat.
*****
Once the movie starts, Y/N returns to the living room, passing out small bowls of popcorn for each group to share. When she reaches Dallas, he takes the popcorn with one hand, immediately passing it to Johnny, then using his other hand to grab onto Y/N’s.
“Come on, Doll, sit with me for just a second? It’s actually quite comfortable when you’re resting on my shoulder.”
Y/N rolls her eyes, knowing he's too proud to admit he just likes to cuddle her.
“Fine, just for a little bit, but then I’m going back to the couch cause the floor gets too cold.” She gives in, knowing Dally doesn’t often feel human contact or affection.
Everyone settles in to watch the movie, and Y/N hates to admit it, but Dallas does make a nice pillow. She places her head on his shoulder, unbothered by the film in front of her, which hasn’t gotten scary quite yet.
“It’s really cold, isn’t it?” Y/N whispers to Dally. He smirks, pulling her into his lap, and covering her with the blanket, holding her with his arms around her.
“Better?” he asks smugly.
She resists the urge to roll her eyes, yet again tonight, instead she turns her attention back to the movie, mumbling, “a little, yes.” He smirks against her skin, placing a light kiss on her temple. They stay in this comfortable position for about half an hour, and just when it begins to get scary, Y/N nuzzles her head into Dallas’ neck, hiding from the scary screen. She picks up his smell of cigarettes and leather and finds her mind drifting off to Soda’s scent of gasoline and roses. Y/N can feel the eyes of most of the boys in the gang staring at her and Dallas, possibly getting a little too close for comfort.
Out of nowhere, a piece of popcorn sails through the air, hitting Y/N and landing in her hair. She and Dally both turn to see a pouty Steve, looking quite annoyed and somewhat needy.
“Okay, Winston, you’ve had Y/N long enough, learn to share a little why don’t you?” He outstretches his arms for her to come into them.
She shrugs a little, “sorry, Dal, the floor was getting a little uncomfortable anyways.” She walks over to where Steve was seated, placing her head on his chest, letting her legs dangle off the couch, with his arms wrapped around her middle, his head buried in her hair, as he gently plays with it.
Sodapop sits next to them, avoiding looking at the two of them. He looks annoyed, and Y/N can’t figure out why. When it's clear to her that Steve is focused on the movie, she taps his foot with hers to get his attention.
“What’s up Pepsi-Cola?” she calls him by the nickname she gave him so many years ago, in hopes he will perk up a little.
He glares back, “I’m trying to watch the movie, Y/N” he folds his arms over his chest, turning his focus back to the television.
Y/N was confused, Soda never talked back to her like this. She couldn’t understand what she did. Mentally, she ran through a list of things she could have done to piss him off, but couldn’t think of anything. She finally settled on that maybe he was just really into the movie and didn’t want it interrupted. She tried to let it go and just forget about it.
*****
It was now nearing the end of the movie, and at its most scary point. Y/N covered her eyes and Steve chuckled at her. His hot breath fanned against her neck as he pulled her close and whispered in her ear, “it’s alright, I got you.” He kissed her temple, but let his lips linger. He trailed a couple kisses down the side of her neck. She and the gang had always been touchy, that’s just how they showed their affection towards her, but none of them ever took it this far. Y/N was stunned, but also didn't want him to stop. As much as she had wished that this was her and Soda, he had made it clear by now he didn’t think of her as anything more than a friend. So if Steve was making a move, why shouldn’t she go for it? Especially since he got his teeth fixed, she has noticed that he actually is quite attractive. She liked Steve, he was a good pal, and now she was realizing, a good kisser. Was he just being a flirt? Or was he trying to show her that he had feelings for her? Before Y/N could ponder this anymore, there was a jump scare, causing her to let out a small shriek, making everyone's attention turn towards her. Unfortunately, this meant they caught her and Steve in a compromising position to say the least. Steve immediately removed his lips from her neck, turning away as if he hadn’t been touching her at all. They both tried to act as normal as possible, although they knew they had been caught. It was silent for a couple of heart wrenching moments.
Two-Bit was the first to point it out, laughing, “You’re joking. You two were seriously making out? When we’re three feet away from you? You kids make me sick.” he joked.
Y/N and Steve made awkward eye contact, each looking to the other for what to say next.
“Uh-” Y/N stumbled over her words, as everyone sat there waiting for an explanation. “We- well we weren’t exactly making out.”
“Oh so he was just kissing your neck, you know, as friends?” Dally teased.
“Yup, pretty much.” Y/N tried to reason, realizing how silly she sounded. She covered her face with one hand, rubbing her forehead in frustration before continuing. “Look, I know how this looks but we didn’t even kiss kiss, we were just cuddling cause I was scared of the movie and- well, I guess we just- I don’t know, a little help here Steve?” she turns to face him.
“Yeah- uh, like Y/N said.” he trails off. She facepalms. Darry just shakes his head in disapproval.
“Okay, Y/N and Soda, switch places, because apparently these two can’t learn to control themselves.” Darry says, sounding like a teacher scolding a pair of friends for talking during class.
Sodapop stands up quickly, annoyance in his voice, “actually, I’m going to bed.” And that’s all he says as he storms off.
Everyone stands there for a moment, dumbfounded.
“Okay, then Ponyboy and Y/N, you guys switch spots so we can finish the film.” Ponyboy obliges, and Steve and Y/N exchange an apologetic glance before separating.
*****
A few days after that night, Steve and Y/N hadn’t talked about it, or even seen each other. It had become kinda clear to everyone in the gang that the two were avoiding each other in fear of it being awkward.
Ponyboy and Darry were in the kitchen when Y/N walked into their house, stopping by to drop off a book Ponyboy had lent Y/N.
“Hello? Anyone home?” Y/N called, hoping to hear a response from Soda, who she also had not heard from since that night. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was mad at her for some inexplicable reason.
“In here!” Darry called back.
Y/N walked in to see the two of them eating a late breakfast, it was a Saturday so it wasn’t unusual for Darry to be home or the boys to be out.
“Hey guys, I’m just dropping by to return the copy of Gone with the Wind you lent me, Pony.” Y/N says, sliding the book across the table to him.
“Oh, cool thanks. What’cha think of it?” he inquires.
“Really good, thanks for recommending it.” Y/N smiles, standing there, curious, arms behind her back, teetering back and forth on the balls of her feet. “Um, is Soda at the DX?” she asks looking down at the floor, brushing a peice of hair behind her ear.
“Yeah, he is. Him and Steve both are, I think. What's going on with you two?” Darry replies.
“That depends on which two you’re wondering about. I think Sodapop’s mad at me and I don’t know why, and Steve- well, I actually don’t know what is going on between me and Steve.” Y/N bites her lower lip, waiting for any sort of advice.
“Well, this is something you’re gonna have to figure out on your own kid. Only you know how you feel about those two. But if you want my advice, I’d tell you that you guys have been friends a long time. All three of ya. Don’t let some stupid teenage love triangle get in the way of that.” Darry states.
Y/N feels slightly dizzy. “I’m sorry, did I hear you correct? Did you just say love triangle? That is definitely not what's going on here. I- I don’t feel that way about them. At least I don’t think I- you know what, nevermind.”
Finally, Ponyboy pipes up, “I don’t think he was talking about your feelings.” Just then Darry covers Ponyboy’s mouth so he can’t speak anymore.
“Oh shoot, I think we’ve probably said way too much. Just uh- go visit them at the D.X, I’m sure this whole thing will blow over soon.” Darry adds.
Y/N sighs, it feels like her whole world just got turned upside down. Was that why Soda was acting so cold to her? Was he jealous? No, it couldn’t be. There just best friends. And Steve, well, he probably just got caught up in the moment and wasn’t thinking clearly. There was no way he felt like that about her. This was all just a big misunderstanding, it was completely impossible.
“Uh, yeah, maybe I’ll do that.” Y/N starts to head out before adding, “thanks guys, I really appreciate the uh- advice.”
Y/N shuts the door on her way out, taking a deep breath. It had been three days since she last saw them. She couldn't remember the last time they went that long without seeing each other. She needed to handle this, she knew she did. Truthfully, she had been avoiding it, but it was eating away at her. She had to start to unravel this mess, and so she started her walk to the D.X.

Mouth Like A Sailor Part 1
Hey so I have no idea how to publish a fanfic on tumblr besides just putting it up like this so hopefully this goes well.  I was posting on qoutev but it kept crashing my computer so tumblr it is.
Marlena Curtis May 1965 5 months before    "I hope all of you will take this summer to exercise your minds... You wouldn't want to go into your senior year with a head full of nothing, would you?"  Mr. Mays shouted at the class, he wasn't angry, just obnoxiously loud.  I looked across the room at my brother's best friend, Steve, hoping to have someone to smile with or pass a note too, but he obviously was not interested and instead was tracing the hand of a short girl with bobbed hair.  She was giggling as he made ugly monster claws out of her manicured fingers, it was kind of sweet honestly.  I sighed and leaned back in my chair, looking around the room for anyone else that might be alright with me.  Mr. Mays voice quieted as he saw no one really cared about his speech on polishing the young mind, he resulted to letting us free for the rest of the period.  I rested my head on my arms and decided to spend the class just sleeping instead of awkwardly trying to make conversation with the dry, ginger soc next to me.  She seemed like she wasn't very interested anyways.    The bell rung two minutes in to my daydream, which couldn't have made me happier, I jumped out of my seat and yanked my bag with me out the door.  Finally I could just do jack-shit and paint my nails instead of listening to the same monotone creeps lecture for hours and hours.  I nearly ran down the hallway towards my friends, Sophie and Jean, they were talking fast and smiled big when they saw me running down to see them.    "MARLI, tell your brother you're gonna be at my house tonight baking cookies or some sweet shit, Gene Vincent is gonna be at Sophie's cousin's bar tonight in Oklahoma City!  Her cousin said we can all get in no sweat."  Jean said, she was so excited her heavy eyeliner was creasing from smiling so wide.
"Holy shit, Sophie did your cousin really say we can go?  How much money?" I asked with a small twinge in my stomach, the past few months have been pretty tough on my wallet, I really wanted all my money to go into my younger brother's secret college fund.
"None baby!  That's a perk of having friends with connections, just pitch in two bucks or so for gas, my daddy is letting me take the Malibu, ain't that exciting?" Sophie cooed, she had this soft voice that could have sounded polite even if she was telling you where it seemed your head was stuck.  She was   rich too, man her family did well.  But she was still my friend, because she didn't care if I lived in a hollowed out coat closet my brother set up for me, she didn't believe in the social class war going on.
"I'm in man!  I'll tell Darry I'm going to have a sleepover with ya'll, he won't ask questions, he's too wrapped around the axel with Soda right now."  I grinned at them and listened quietly to the rest of their chatter.  They could get awful excited about something real fast, it was damn cute.
We walked out to Jean's boyfriends car, he was a doll, always chauffeuring her and her friends around Tulsa.  Speaking of the devil, Tommy came sprinting down the concrete steps and bear-hugged tiny Jean, making her scream and laugh.
"Hello sweetheart, ready to be done with the bullshit for a whole 2 months?" he was another one of those guys that seems to really just shout instead of talk, he nodded to Sophie and I and smiled nicely, "ya'll hangin' or goin' home?"
"I can stay a little, we're supposed to be in the City by 9 and we gotta leave at 7 or so.." Sophie chirped
"Just straight home for me, thanks, I gotta make an appearance so Darry doesn't get suspicious"  I knew full well that he would expect the worst if I never showed up at home.    I jumped down from Tommy's pick- up and yelled to Jean I would be at her house at 630.  I smoothed out my black corduroy skirt and re-tucked the ratty pink shirt I had owned since 9th grade.  My sneakers crunched down the gravel covering the alley behind my house as I walked towards the backward, where I heard my brother and their friends.  Not even the whole gang was there, but it was still loud as hell.
"Hey Marls how was the last day of school?  I  miss anything important?" laughed Two-bit, the rusty haired boy lay lazily on our back steps.
"Ha, it was fine, you didn't miss anything important.  Just that Mark guy offered me a whole year supply of marijuana if I would flash the principal at the assembly this morning"  I told him as I took a carton out of my bra and lit a smoke, I giggled a little when I saw him cock an eyebrow.  The nimrod probably thought I went through with it.
"So ya did it right?"  Demanded a bored looking Dallas Winston.  He sat next to my twin Soda, who was laughing quietly to himself, he probably knew I was too much of a wimp to leave school one some crazy note like that.
"Nah," I took a long drag, "I could get that shit for free by just winking at some of the squares in this town... But anyways, where did Darry go?  He working late or something?"
"No, he should be home in ten minutes or so, you gonna bail soon?" Soda asked
"Around 6ish I'm going over to Jean's, Sophie and I are gonna spend the night with her."  I told him without much worry, I was used to making up white lies at this point, Soda would likely not even care that I was going into the big city tonight, maybe he'd even think it was tuff I was sneaking off to a high class bar with my socy friends.
"Ain't Jean that middle-class broad with the giant jugs?" Dally half-joked, it was almost a long running gag that we had, since he couldn't make a move on me, being three of the gangs' sister, he has always tried his best to get at my friends.    I just rolled my eyes and took another drag of my cigarette, lettings the boys' conversation go this way and that and just listen.  That's kinda been my go-to lately, when my mom and dad died three months ago I lost a lot of my talkative edge.  Shit it's been three months already... I pushed my body lightly off of the side of the house and dragged myself inside.  My room really was just a scraped out coat closet.  I ain't gonna complain too bad about it though, Darry really did make it alright and it wasn't even too small of a closet to begin with.  Hell, if we were able to fit my little mattress and even my record player I bought when I was 11, it can't have been that bad.  My stomach was beginning to feel a little green, I had been smoking like a chimney since I got home, and my room ain't too breezy so that tobacco stench really liked to hang around.
"Marlena?" I heard my oldest brother knocking at my door, he opened it and immediately looked a little peeved, "Oh lordy!  Did ya just set a whole carton of marbolos on fire?  It's a goddamn wildfire in here, you keep smoking like this and I'm gonna have to start checking what you buy at the store now, ya dig?"
"Yeah, I know.  Hey Darry?"  I said, without the slightest intention of cutting down on my habit, "I'm gonna go to Jean's tonight, Sophie will be there too, that cool?"    "That's fine" he said walking back to the kitchen.  I followed him out and just followed suit, he got a glass of water, I got one too.  We didn't even talk the whole time,  he's kinda been quiet lately too.  When our parents died in that accident everyone took on a different kind of burden, but sometimes I think Darry feels like he took the whole load, and maybe that's why he's so damn stressed. Coming home from the funeral with my brothers felt like I had just taken a few strangers from the graveyard and said "you'll do."  Darry used to be that real fun, hilarious older brother.  We used to go out all the time and just talk about everything.  We would talk about how mom was a little too harsh sometimes on people and that it was pretty funny that dad would just push her buttons when she would get annoyed by the little things.  My youngest brother, Ponyboy, well he just downright terrifies me the way their deaths changed him.  He didn't use to be so dreamy all the time, he always had a big imagination, but this time it's different, he tried to follow mom and dad's souls up to heaven and got stuck somewhere between space and the East Side.  Sodapop though, he seemed to take it the healthiest, he wasn't shy about bawling and howling like an idiot at the funeral.  He had to express how he felt, so he did.  But one thing that did change was the side of him people usually forgot about started to rear its ugly head just a little more every once in a while.  Soda is charming and nice, but he's also reckless and clumsy and he won't look before he just starts running.  I'm not trying to  but my brothers in  a bad light though, I certainly haven't been perfect since the accident either.
Jean's dad was in the army, and her mom was a nurse, so they got along pretty okay.  She wasn't by any means rich, but she surely never had a shortage of cash by the end of the month.  Her house was just a quick bus ride from my neighborhood, it was two stories, well kept, and all the bathrooms were pink.  I knocked on the door and not even a second later it was the bermuda triangle of "can you answer that?" between her and her parents.  It was her mom who came to the door, she was a real neat lady.  Joan's mom was actually real tough, she had a hard life as a kid and she don't have the easiest job in the world.
"Hello Marls!  Don't you look like a doll tonight?"  She smiled up at me, I am pretty tall for a girl and I usually tower over most ladies I meet.
"Thank-you Mrs. Massey, it's just my school clothes, but I figured it would be alright for tonight, ha," I tried my best to sound like a nice girl, but she was just so damn down to earth I really don't think she'd judge me too harsh.  She let me in and walked me all the way to Jean's room, asking about my brothers and if Pony was proud of himself that he came in 2nd at his last track meet.  It was nice talking to a mom.
Jean popped up from the floor when I walked in, "You ready to leave soon?  I just gotta find my lipstick and Sophie will be here soon, we're gonna get burgers at Dairy Queen on the way out of  town, my mom gave me food money if any of us need."  she spoke briskly and with a butt-load of excitement.
"Yeah I'm all set" I giggled quietly as she threw tubes of makeup to the floor trying to find her token lipstick. She got it and we tumbled down the stairs just as Sophie was pulling up to the house.

Crooked Kingdom (So/c 2)
(2/5*)
I still just can’t get on board with this one.. I really wanted to. I enjoyed SoC, well, the last half of SoC, and was told it all gets better once you get to that point. I was told that Crooked Kingdom is all go, totally action packed and awesome. Boy howdy what a letdown. I suppose it was action packed, but it was all over the place and not very gripping. Not once did this really pull me in.
It gets long, and spoilery at the end.
The Good:
Nina! I thought I was going to hate her back in the beginning of SoC but she was possibly the most dynamic character out of all of them even to the end. Her story (besides that One Terrible Thing) was done justice. She was fleshed out. And then done a terrible injustice with that One Terrible Thing. Nina was struggling through withdrawals on top of her demons and figuring out who she is again, all while still being a badass involved in the many shenanigans of this book.
Wylan & Jesper. Again they are cute idiots and I love them. They both felt more real this time around, more meat to their personalities and neither of them got killed off. that’s the dream. That’s the real gay agenda.
The Bad:
Kaz. He’s the most boring main character ever. Everything is way too easy for him. Everything goes exactly according to some crazy plan he *just thought of*. He gets out of sticky situations with ease, even with a busted leg. Every time one of his plans went how it was supposed to (spoilers: every damn time) he makes some like *mic drop* comment that makes me hate him even more. The way his plans are written sometimes isolates the reader. “It worked because this thing I did that I didn’t tell anyone about and I’m the best” *mic drop*. He is written as someone Much older than we’re supposed to believe he is, which has always been my struggle with all of these characters. I think it just shows so much more blindingly with Kaz. Even if his whole life has been a struggle and he’s a hardened criminal... he still doesn’t have the thought processes of a 17 year old. He’s talked about as being some genius more than it is actually shown.
Only maybe Jesper & Wylan kinda seem like teenagers. I’m pretty convinced Bardugo was writing this book as adult fiction and then decided she wanted it to be YA after all and just reduced their ages down in number but nothing else. If I read them as 30-40 year olds it’s much more pleasant, but she has to keep reminding everyone they are ~17~ and that just ruins it all over again.
Inej. I liked her enough in SoC, but here she is reduced to just.. not much. Everything about her, in reference to her, that she says or thinks, is repetitive. I know I read the same line about her several times throughout this book. Her storyline in Crooked Kingdom felt like a constant backpedal. Like ooo we’re getting somewhere, she’s going to overcome something... and then we loop back to the starting position again. Just.. frustrating. No growth. Treading water.
A few paragraphs ago I say it is action packed. And it is, but that is not a good thing here. The fast pacing was a major downfall. There’s so much going on, so many odd plot lines. The beginning of SoC felt the same way for me. It feels like running loosely related errands. “We have to do this thing before we can do this but we also have several more things to do and...” ok. It’s like questing on Runescape but Worse. Do we need to pick up some milk on the way over also, Kaz? A lot of these plot lines / devices also kinda got abandoned. Really just feels like trying to rush through these smaller events to get to the Big Bad Event, not giving anyone time to process what just happened. There are no feelings, its just happening. There’s no real consulting about what they’re going to do, because Kaz is the ~mastermind~ and hes so ~witty~ and always just has the perfect plan that will go off without a single problem. I guess she is writing another book? But I’m pretty sure that is an afterthought. No Grisha uprising? No actual problems with Parem? hokay. sure. just gonna build to an actually interesting and good plot and flush it down the harbor in favor of a) another heist basically b) a boring ass villain who is really just a rich dude in a suit.
Dunyasha. Another rush through plot device. She’s incredible. She’s lovely. She’s going to murder Inej.. but nope. She was not done justice. Inej was so worthless during their fight, just getting stabbed left and right and not being able to fight back. I wanted more Dunyasha. Not just ~defeated~ and then is nothing more.
Van Eck was underwhelming as a villain. He was too easily defeated because ~kaz the mastermind~ He gets hauled off to jail.. for “committing” fraud... h’okay. and the gang gets all his money. woo. hoo. he did not have enough face time. there was basically no interaction with him. He was just some dull politician.. oo scary.
The vicious coupling. I’m literally just going to paste from my SoC review because its the SAME THING. “ It may actually be possible, wait wait hear me out, to end a YA series without pairing up EVERYONE. You can even end it without pairing up anyone. I mean yay a little nibble of lgbt rep, I’ll take what I can get. But ugh does everyone have to be together? It doesn’t bode well for plot/character development in the next book. Because that just sounds like a good plot device- oh wait! that is what it is! With Inej being kidnapped!”
Ummm this was basically SoC but just like. slightly different plot. Exact. Same. Algorithm.
The Really Bad.
KAZ OWNS INEJ KAZ, A STRAIGHT WHITE MALE, OWNS A SULI GIRL “The Suli, being a nomadic, stateless people, may have been influenced by Jewish or Romani cultures.” and the main character of this book. OWNS ONE. ONE WHO HE CALLS HIS INVESTMENT CONSTANTLY. THE BROWN GIRL HE OWNS IS ALSO HIS LOVE INTEREST???????” PLEASE. STOP SWEEPING THIS UNDER THE RUG. THIS SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED. tHIS WAS PUBLISHED IN 2016 HOW IS THIS OKAY yall really out here ignoring some severe issues just because you love this ~tortured past~ ~witty haha~ ~genius schemer~ nasty vile 1 dimensional boring brick of a character
Matthias.
The character with growth and depth. The love interest of the other character with depth.... suddenly dead. His death was so dumb. It really came out of nowhere. We go through all this with him just for him to be expendable. No one even cared? Nina did, but the others didn’t have any thoughts about it. He did not deserve this. Nina did not deserve this. If anyone had to be viciously coupled, it should have been them. It made sense for them.
I wasn’t really planning on doing a full review, I didn’t want to put the effort in. But it kept bothering me, and I’d remember more things that bothered me. So here we are. I didn’t want to just hate on a book without thoroughly getting into it.
