Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) was a Czech composer best known for his symphonies, symphonic poems, operas, and chamber music. Dvořák's best-loved works include his 9th Symphony (From The New World), the American quartet, and his Slavonic Dances, which take inspiration from Czech folk melodies and dance rhythms.

Dvorak’s birthplace Nelahozeves is 20 km northwest of #Prague. The first written records concerning #Nelahozeves date from the year 1352, but the site is said to have been occupied from as early as the beginning of the 10th century. In 1623 Nelahozeves became the property of the Lobkowicz family who still own the castle today. When #Dvorak was born, Nelahozeves had 46 buildings and 438 inhabitants. #antonindvorak was born on September 8, 1841 in a two-storey house, no. 12, right opposite the church. His father, Frantisek Dvorak, worked here as a butcher and innkeeper. During a fire in July 1842 Frantisek carried 10-month-old Antonin out of the burning house in his cradle. The house was reconstructed after the fire and the ground floor, with three other rooms, apparently remained as before. Today the #Lobkowicz family rents out the building to the National #Museum for a symbolic amount. It now houses an exhibition on the composer’s childhood and adolescence.
