I cant stop laughing at the fact there was no reason Vecna kept his hand over Max's face for so long other than that the writers didn't want her reacting to Mike's monologue
Mike's voice echoing thru the hellscape: you can fly! you can move mountains! Max, getting choked by a demon, sarcastically: yOu caN-n f-fLy

ACTUALLY I'LL SAY IT NOW: many fans (usually more casual ones) treat relationships on the show as either a way for self-insertion or as a way to "reward" characters and its honestly really fucking stupid?
like relationships should be about chemistry and communication and what is best for them as CHARACTERS.
st*ncy for an example:
steve is a fan favorite. steve is funny, attractive, charismatic. steve has been trying and failing to get a gf for 2 seasons.
nancy is a pretty girl who steve is attracted to. because steve is so nice and attractive, people think that means he deserves nancy. not only are you ignoring the characters goals, personalities, and aspirations, you're being incredibly misogynistic in thinking a girl is like a prize for a character you like.
other st*ncy fans, usually the female ones, do also believe this to an extent, but they also want to be the one to date steve. nancy is easy for women to project themselves on to, she's smart, pretty, funny, but has an edgier side to her. so they ship st*ncy as a way of kind of also shipping themselves w/ steve.
but the same is also true for byler/mlvn.
most mlvn fans are like. and i'm saying this because its true, not to demean anyone, usually either teen girls or nerdy guys from reddit.
teen girls are attracted to mike, and they insert themselves in the role of el. el is kind of a blank slate (through no fault of her own, mostly through trauma) so this is pretty easy.
nerdy guys from reddit can project themselves on to mike because mike is nerdy and unathletic. el is objectively a pretty girl, and she has super powers which make her special. these guys think its good representation for them when a guy like mike has a girlfriend like this, because it's also exactly what they want.
now byler, and this is controversial, can also be found guilty of this. specifically i see this from bylers who really hate mike or really love will. because they think will is perfect, he's been through so much pain, he deserves to be with mike, because he is in love with mike. this is once again kind of just using mike as a prize, and not really taking into account what mike actually wants as a character, or how well these characters fit together. now mike and will do actually fit together and have good chemistry/communication, which definitely complicates things. like, you got the right answer but with the wrong equation, you know? but because of this when you "show your work" (yes i'm going with the math analogy) your interpretation doesn't match well with people who solved the problem correctly.
tl;dr-- relationships are made of TWO people (sometimes more) and you have to consider both sides of the equation. you also have to look at how they work together, and how well what the characters want line up. if you ARE just going to rely entirely on self-projection or wanting what a single character wants, then that's actually completely fine too, but just be open about it, yknow?

so. hey. if you've been keeping up with the mileven and byler tags, you'll know there's a lot of... dislike??? disconnect?? between the two. (not saying this is the case with everyone!! and it's okay if it is!!) i don't know. but this fighting is sort of silly.
milevens are great people !! bylers are great people!! i'm so happy both of you exist!!! you're all so smart and amazing!! PLEASE be kind to each other because yall are literally all such talented and awesome people.
please do not seperate into 'us' and 'them' over such a trivial matter. we, as a society, do NOT need more of the toxicity and hatred that permeates within online spaces and fandoms. i love you all very dearly -- but this is getting to a point where it is actually harmful.
people who ship mileven are not toxic or dumb. people who ship byler are not delusional or, again, toxic. it is a show. it is a ship. you extract joy from your own and leave other's to be!! it should not be something to fight about like this!!
i do get it, though. it's not great watching your ship be trashed, or believing the other ship would be bad for the characters. but we must remember that they are not real people. i also understand if you're worried about real life effect. however --
mileven/byler may be toxic!! i understand!! that does NOT make it okay to attack/mock/be unkind to those who ship it.
tl;dr: if u see smthng u dont like, PLEASE just block n ignore!!!

I am rewatching S4 and I am on ep4, Dear Billy and I realize now how significant letters are. El and Mikes letters back and forth are brought up multiple times. We see Mike reading from El’s letter in the beginning. Lucas and the others getting letters from Max.
I find it interesting also how different characters treat the letters they receive. Mike is seen tossing away multiple letters only holding on the the last one from El for maybe an hour or two before Will tells him it doesn’t matter. But we can see that El has kept nearly every letter Mike has sent her even with the dreaded “From” where as the one letter that says “From el” we see Mike throw it in the trash. That word meant something to El. It meant finality. Mike still continues to view his actions as fixable but is throwing away there very issue El brought up. We don’t even see Mike acknowledge that he was in any way in the wrong. That El had any point.
Contrasting this to Lucas who when he gets his letter from Max, her finale goodbye, he holds on to it. He doesn’t even want it. In Ep4: Dear Billy, we see him tell Max that he doesn’t want a letter. That he wants Max to be vulnerable. Which we know El lied in her letters (not cool but understandable. El was going through a lot) but she manages to be emotionally vulnerable outside of her letters. Just like Max also learns to kind of do. But while Lucas is understanding the whole way (even when he kept getting hurt over and over again. He just didn’t want to leave Max. He knew she was hurting), Mike was not understanding. Which, yeah, it sucks to be lied to and both of them have apologizing to do but this is just about comparison.
I just find it interesting how letters play into this and are used in the show.

Was minding my own business in the anti-mileven tag and saw someone straight up say that bylers are 'invalidating' El and mileven shippers by saying that El isn't ready for a relationship and for shipping byler.
My dude, people are saying that romantic love was probably not the best first move for El developmentally, she was raised in a lab and needs more context and understanding to be able to fully make decisions for herself. No one is saying she shouldn't date ever.
Also, keep your shit in your own tags.

my timeline watching ST as a ex mleven shipper
season 1: what a cute ship
season 2: I wish I got more of them but it’s better than nothing
season 3: well, them saying I love you was nice, but their relationship drama was so stupid and ruined the entire season. This is stranger things, not Riverdale.
season 4 vol. 1: seriously? They’re doing the splitting storyline again? This is so boring and repetitive. Can’t they think of anything else to do with these characters. At least we’re starting to get confirmation about Will being gay.
season 4 vol. 2: will Byers loves Mike Wheeler! I guess that speech was cute too.
me, nearly a year later: byler for life.

Watch as they make Milkeven get married at the end of season five. Because straight teenage marriages are so romantic and wholesome (eyerolls) and it allows Mike and El to ride off permanently into the sunset. If neither dies or gets a spinoff, you know they'll do it. lol
Yeah I feel like ST is either gonna end with Eleven dead and sacrificing herself or Mike and Eleven running off into the sunset. Which kinda sucks? :/
I will admit I liked them together in S1. It was kinda cute puppy love. But we're on S4 and their relationship does not feel like this evolved from two twelve year olds giving each other a peck on the lips except now it's been a couple of years and they've made out. Their relationship is so boring. I mean, Mike seemed so awkward around her that people thought he was gay, but no, he was just that shitty of a boyfriend.
To me it just seems like Mike likes her for her powers even if the show tries to tell us otherwise. Or because she's the only girl who ever showed interest in him. And I don't believe at all that it was love at first sight because the first time they met she was soaking, not talking and deeply traumatized. I always saw it as the more time they spent together the more Mike liked her when I watched S1, but no. He was just in love with her from the start. My joke about him being attracted to her feminine haircut and extensive vocabulary from day 1 is becoming more and more accurate this season.
And then in terms of Eleven's character? Eleven is always being defined by what other people tell her. By Brenner, then by Mike, then by Dr Owens, then by Hopper. The only person who truly allowed her to be herself was Max. Eleven needs to work out who she is and deal with her issues about her personal identity before dating anyone. She needs to see herself beyond her powers and she needs to get over the whole monster superhero thing. And I don't think that's gonna happen as long as she's in a relationship.
So to me they're clearly not meant to be an endgame ship. But I have this gut feeling like you that they're going to be all happy and sweet and in love. Their relationship is stale, cliché and bad for both of the characters. But they're a young guy and girl and they're soooo in love. I think the show overall is very well written, but their relationship is so uninteresting and post S2, has very poor writing. Especially in the Mike department.
Thanks for the ask (:

ive said this before but i think it bears repeating
eleven was supposed to die in the first season. the duffers said they planned out the scope of show before they filmed the first season. knowing these two facts, how could m*leven possibly be endgame?

One thing that bothers me about the way that (some) M!leven shippers talk about Will is the way that they say the most homophobic shit, and then act so confused when people call them out.
Like the way I have deadass seen some people say that they want Will, one of the only two canonically queer characters on the show, to be killed off for the sake of M!leven, or that they say that Will “doesn’t need to be gay” because there is already one other queer character, and it gets in the way of their ship. Despite the fact that Will never got in the way of their ship- in fact, he fucking saved it, but nobody wants to see that.
Because at the end of the day, a lot of M!levens only see Will being gay as a threat, instead of what it is- relatable representation for a lot of gay kids. Does Will have a crush on Mike? Yes, but that alone isn’t going to sink the ship, and if it does, then your ship was never strong to begin with.
Idk, I feel like this shouldn’t have to be said, but Will being gay isn’t about your fucking ship. Not everything is about your stupid ship war, believe it or not. If the only thing you care about in regards to a character being queer is how your ship is going to survive, than your priorities suck. Not sorry.

i hear a lot of milevens saying mike and el’s relationship is perfect when it’s not. it has flaws like any other relationship.
Confession #25
If anyone in this fandom thinks any relationship (platonic or romantic) in the show is perfect, they're wrong. Not a single relationship in this show is perfect because the perfect relationship doesn't exist. That includes Mileven, Byler, Jancy, Stancy, Jopper, Lumax, Dustin and Eddie's friendship, Stobin, etc. Every single relationship and friendship in the show is flawed.

I hate how Milkduds will hear me say Mike isn’t going to break up with El and think that’s a good thing for Milkdud. Mike isn’t going to break up with El because he got frantically shoved back into the relationship by Will and now is in full swing of trying to force it to work. Mike basically stopped trying to fix it after she dumped him and than was going to completely accept that until Will gave him a reason to consider trying again. Than he felt forced to confess his made up love for El by Will again. El IS going to break up with him because he keeps lying and bullshitting her even when it mattered most to her that he was honest. El’s character arc is learning where she ends and others begin and to stop relying on one person to another to lead her life and start living for herself. Mike’s arc is finally allowing himself to let go of things that make him normal and embrace himself. El’s can not be achieved if Mike breaks up with her because she will not realize that for herself and take action for herself. I still think when El and Mike break up it will be mutual but El will be the one to finally break it off

m/leven would be so much better if in s1 they did not kiss and in s2 they reunited and went to snow ball but did not kiss and then in s3 consisted of mike crushing on el and trying to get the courage to really make a move and I’ll stand by this til I die ~ their development was so strange
