Oh, don't worry! You're safe here. You have definitely found the small corner of the fandom (me and my moots) where it's all bi Gar and lesbian Rachel, all the time.

Like it sucks that other people in the fandom have to reduce them down to a potential romantic relationship - especially when their friendship is so great. They have such an instant connection, they make each other feel safe - and that doesn't have to be romantic.

And they spend so much of the show apart from each other, developing as separate characters in order to really shine. It shows such an intense heteronormativity that them doing things like holding hands and him putting his arm around her signifies romantic involvement when they have stated to other characters that they don't feel that way about each other. And if two guys or two girls did the same things (holding hands, putting arms around each other) it would be seen as platonic and the audience would break their necks to explain why it is just an example of friendship.

They are just friends. Let a guy and a girl exist in media and be close and exist as just best friends (without one of them being canonically gay). And to me, one of the most ick things about Garchel shippers is that they literally always reduce the characters down to just their "romantic" moments. They never talk about how much it sucked that they used Rachel (Gar's memories of Rachel) against him when he was at Cadmus, how that could have been intensely traumatizing for him.

Like - even in the later part of Season 2, when Rachel is comforting Gar about Donna's death, she wraps her arms around him in a hug and he doesn't move to hug her back, because the last time that he hugged her (in his mind) he then attacked her and brutally ripped her apart because he was fully imagining that Cadmus employee that he killed had her face. Nobody talks about how this could have affected their "romantic" relationship, they just see her hugging him after Donna's death and go "Look! Physical contact! My ship!!!"

Not to mention, one of the last times he saw her before she left the Tower, she was telling him that he wasn't good enough because all he does is 'growl' at people when there is potential danger, and then he has a horrible nightmare hallucination that probably feels so real where he brutually murders her using his powers, and from that point on the reason his powers are so restricted - aka the reason he can't turn into other animals at will/the mental block is because he is terrified of hurting the people he loves with his powers. Romantic ship or not, nobody takes the time to talk about the depth of Gar's trauma and how it affects the way he relates to the people around him.

In the eyes of the fandom, he is just an accessory.

I don't even wanna get started on the whole "Mommy Kory" thing and how everybody who stans AnnaKory literally only talks about Gar as if he is "her son" and not his own fully fledged character - that is a rant for another day.

Gar is a person. He is a whole, interesting person. He's not a background prop, he's not a handbag. He's a really cool guy with a story of his own. He's not a C character, he's one of the core four. Treat him like it.

I don’t know why some of the Garchel shippers are still butt hurt over the fact that they’ll never see Gar and Rachel actually become a couple. They’re in denial and are still obsessing over a ship that was NEVER gonna become canon in the show.

Also, I know that Gar and Rachel were shown in that “Heroes In Love” promo- however, since it was never actually confirmed by neither the show runner or even Teagan and Ryan themselves, I think that they were in it to show that there could’ve been a possibility of them becoming a couple had the show not been cancelled.

the more hardcore people go on Garchel (especially with how heteronormative it is) the more hardcore I read "Garchel" scenes as platonic and proof that Gar is bi

for example: the "how am I supposed to help? by sitting in front of a computer with you and your girlfriend?"

Gar immediately gets defensive and pissed off at the mention of Rachel being his girlfriend, and in any typical het romcom, this would immediately mean that he's hiding his feelings for her. But to me, that's not how it comes off here. Because when Rose follows up with "why? is it cause she doesn't like you or you don't like her?" Gar gives an even more frustrated "I am not getting into this right now"

And I'm pretty sure his explanation would have been "I'm bi, Rachel is a lesbian, and my boyfriend is missing and nobody else seems to give a fuck." (If he was willing to 'get into it'.)

Especially because he was particularly frustrated and on thin ice emotionally that night - not because Rose was being so bothersome about his relationship status with Rachel, but because Rose genuinely did not give a fuck about Jason being missing. She just told him moments before that she was more bothered about being woken up than Jason potentially being in danger.

All that after Rachel reduced Jason's disappearance down to "he's not in any real danger, he's annoying so they'll bring him right back" (and yes, she was kind of right, but that's not the point). Gar is feeling helpless because one of the most important people to him is gone and he is the only one who truly seems to care. So now is not a great time to be defending his queerness to a near stranger.

Or ya know - how I read that scene every time I rewatch it now.

Okay, so I have a question.. if Gar and Rachel were a couple in that Christmas scene- then how come the caption of this tweet from the official ‘Titans’ Twitter says, and I quote, “The epic love stories of Dick & Kory and Tim & Bernard”? If Gar and Rachel were confirmed as a couple, you’d think they’d be mentioned in that caption too. The quote would’ve said, “The epic love stories of Dick & Kory, Tim & Bernard and Gar & Rachel”.. if Gar and Rachel were actually a couple.

I know someone’s gonna be like “Then why were they in the video if they’re not a couple?” Either they were in the video to show the platonic love between Gar and Rachel or maybe- key word MAYBE- it was to hint a possibility of a romantic relationship between Gar and Rachel.. doesn’t mean that it will happen- and it clearly won’t happen because the show’s over now. So.. guess it sucks for the toxic fans of the show who said they would “hunt down the writers if Gar and Rachel don’t become a couple” (yes this was something that was said on social media)

side note: Those who are new to following me, I don’t ship the ‘Titans’ iteration of Beast Boy and Raven. If you ship Gar and Rachel, that’s fine. Ship whoever you want- I’m not the type of person who tells people that they shouldn’t ship certain characters together. I’m not like that; I never was. But please keep this in mind: if you’re one of those ‘Garchel shippers’ who go around calling people in the fan base who don’t ship Gar and Rachel romantically a “fake fan”, then you are free to leave my blog page- unfollow me if you’re one of those fans. I’ve put up with that before and it’s immature and overall toxic behavior. It’s also unfair to treat other fans (who don’t ship them) that way. It is petty fan behavior and can be considered, to some, a form of cyber bullying.. especially if you insult them repeatedly while calling them a “fake fan”.

i dont really like the ship because even before titans, people have always seen Gar/beast boy as 'Rachel's love interest/boyfriend'(in my opinion).

when in fact he's his own character and deserves to be known for something OTHER than that...

like the fact that he and Rachel were seperated for an entire season in Titans and all Gar could talk about the entire time was.... Jason... like hmmm. Titans really wants him to be more than just a love interest for her

Even if you just consider the amount of growth he had while being apart from Rachel - he struggled with having his voice heard while running around trying to play therapist for everyone else, he felt at opposition with Conner (someone he previously got along well with) because he was struggling to develop/fully explore his powers compared to someone who has a very useful and advanced power set, and most of all - Gar missed his best friend and was the only sympathetic voice of Jason in the Titans group.

Even during the independent time he had away from Rachel in S2, I liked the way his character progressed without the show trying to shade some romance between them for fan service without actually confirming it (yet, they still managing to fucking shoehorn in Garchel fanservice in the Cadmus storyline, but I have already ranted about how I think Gar's S2 storyline should have gone in other posts).

Even from the jump, right from S1, where they clearly wanna bait Garchel/BBRae fans in with the whole arcade scene and them holding hands and "there is nothing evil about you, Rachel" - to me, Gar's character was so much more interesting independently because of how he fit into the Doom Patrol family dynamic.

With the scene where he is talking to Doctor Caulder and being scolded for bringing Rachel back while simultaneously being baited into revealing more information about her - the way his eyes sparkle with unshed tears at the way Doctor Caulder speaks to him brings so much depth to his character and it makes me wanna know more about him as a character. Even the part where he goes up to Rita's room and knocks on her door to no answer - keeping his voice bright, telling her that there is no pressure for her to come out. Clearly he's so used to being the person who cheers everyone else up, and that's why he flocked to Rachel, wanting to help fix her problems, because he is used to finding validation in that.

Also there is a scene in season 4 that I have just been dying to do a breakdown of, because it is one of the siganture Gar is only here to support Rachel, there to be her emotional sponge, his problems don't matter, he's just her accesory kind of thing. The part where she's talking about the maple syrup, and how she can truly smell it for the first time because she has lost her powers, and she is like "is this what it's like to not have everyone's problems constantly burdening you?"

and then Gar shrugs and is like "I wouldn't know"

but - even though he's not a magical witch who can literally feel other people's emotions, he is a highly empathetic (most likely autistic person) who is constantly thinking about how his actions will affect everyone else, constantly worrying about everyone else's problems, and the expression on his face in that moment is "are you fucking kidding me?" because the entirety of season three is him running around worrying about everyone else's problems instead of worrying about himself (given, Rachel wouldn't know that because she is absent) - but still.

I don't see how anyone can take that scene as romantic/shipping when it is clear that they are on two different wavelengths and communicating over each other instead of to each other

Like the show adds so much depth to Gar as a character, and Gar and Rachel have so much more to offer as characters than just potential romantic interests for each other - and yet, the Garchel shippers just reduce it down to: Rachel is really cool and op and Gar is there!!! And they are in love!!!

Like they will take any moment in the show where he even looks at her be like LOOK !!! SHIP !!! Instead of actually discussing how awesome they are as individual characters

I saw a TikTok live on my FYP where a “Titans” fan was saying this, and I quote:

“If Tim and Rachel get together or if they introduce Terra into the show, I’m gonna create a petition to have the show canceled.”

Basically, this person is saying that if things don’t go their way- if Gar and Rachel don’t become a couple in season 4- they’re either gonna stop watching the show altogether or they’re gonna create a petition to cancel the show.

Like, what the fuck?!

Also the fact that Garchel shippers act like Rachel is the only one on the team that Gar truly cares about, or that he cares about her significantly more than the others?

As if he hasn't shown time and time again that he deeply cares for Dick, Kory, Tim, Conner, and as if he wasn't playing Jason's full time defense lawyer when everyone else was ready to give up on Jason.

Like I think Garchel is icky for several reasons (just within canon, not even talking about the age difference between the actors) - but the fact that the fans of the ship want to act like the displays of friendship and platonic affection that make the Titans a family are lesser or don't matter compared to romantic love (which Dickkorys are also guilty of tbh) - it just gets under my skin.

This video is from the Instagram live she did with Joshua (I screen recorded this part of the livestream to provide proof that Teagan confirmed that Gar and Rachel wasn’t going to be in a relationship).

I could tell that she’s sick of answering that question- and I can see that she gets asked that ALL THE TIME. I’d be annoyed too, but she answered the question with grace.

She said that Gar and Rachel “each have a storyline without each other” and that “their friendship is important to both of them”- which means that that’s what we’re going to see.. and I’m ready for it! But, the toxic Garchel shippers STILL think she’s lying. Some have gone so far as to say “I don’t trust what she says anymore. Ryan actually ships Gar and Rachel so.. I’m only trusting what he says from now on.”

YES, A “FAN” ACTUALLY SAID THAT!! SOMEONE EVEN CALLED HER A LIAR!! TOXIC FAN BEHAVIOR AT ITS FINEST!!

The hardcore BBRae shippers are gonna be mad at me, but it must be said: I don’t ship the “Titans” iteration of Beast Boy and Raven. Yes, Gar and Rachel have a connection.. but it’s not romantic. There’s NOTHING romantic about their relationship. Gar and Rachel are more like brother and sister than a potential couple. Even the actors themselves have made fun of the idea of Gar and Rachel becoming a couple.

The scene where she’s at the Lazarus Pit with Gar to bring Dick back to life, some of the BBRae shippers took Rachel saying that her love for them (Gar, Dick and Kory) as a “confession”.. but it wasn’t a confession. She said that her love for Dick, Gar and Kory gave her the strength she needed to defeat Trigon.

They’ve also said things like “Gar and Rachel better become a couple in season 4” or “Rachel better tell Gar that she’s in love with him in season 4”. But if neither of those things happen, the hardcore BBRae shippers will be mad.

Not all BBRae shippers are like that, but a lot of them are- based on what I’ve seen on Twitter.. Instagram.. and even on TikTok. “Gar and Rachel HAVE to become a couple!” No, they don’t.

Another thing:

TEAGAN AND RYAN ARE NINE YEARS APART!!!

So, even when Teagan turns 18 and IF (heavy emphasis on “if”) Gar and Rachel become a couple in season 4, it’s gonna be awkward for both Teagan and Ryan to film a romantic scene together (no, I’m not talking about a sex scene). Plus, the writers might not want to go in that direction with Gar and Rachel’s relationship (It’s Dick and Kory who are confirmed to be endgame in “Titans”, not Gar and Rachel).

The fact that some BBRae shippers refuse to take that into consideration is really annoying, and the fact that I have to explain why I don’t ship Gar and Rachel literally makes me want to scream.

But don’t worry.. I’m only screaming on the inside.

Additional side note: I want to add something else… Gar and Rachel’s friendship hasn’t been explored very much, hardly at all. We saw their friendship begin strong in season one. Then in season two, there was the fight they had and Rachel left TWICE— she went to Themiscyra and was there for MONTHS coming back right at the end of season three. So, if the writers decide to eventually make Gar and Rachel a couple.. I would rather see them spend more time as friends first. Like, it doesn’t have to be rushed, does it?

Besides, it hasn’t been confirmed that Gar and Rachel would be endgame; Dick and Kory have been confirmed to be endgame (because of Dick seeing his and Kory’s daughter when he was in the Lazarus Pit).

And another thing, you shouldn’t compare Gar and Rachel’s relationship with Dick and Kory. The relationship between Dick and Kory is VERY DIFFERENT from Gar and Rachel’s relationship. Dick and Kory are grown adults- not teenagers.

If the writers decide not to make Gar and Rachel a couple, I just know that the hardcore Garchel shippers are gonna lose their shit.
