People on twitter are really saying that we hate Awkwafina for no reason? Have they been living under a rock? People have a good reason to hate her annoying ass.
I swear people will do awful things like saying a slur and people on there will say that awful person is hated for no reason. They are so stupid.
Edit:
Tumblr media
Fucking idiots. One: it’s a fucking black accent. She also can turn it off and on when she wants. So fuck off with the whole “she’s an immigrant and it’s just the way she talks” shit. Two: she’s not even using a New York accent. Three: yes this annoying shrill has hurt people. She’s had done racist shit in the past and was dragged for it. Of course those fucking idiots don’t care because they not black and it would be great if they would have shut the fuck up regarding antiblackness. But I guess they love talking over black people.

I just watched the live action ‘The Little Mermaid’
And it was really cute.
Um I can see why we don’t have more underwater movies, a lot of the underwater scenes looked a bit weird. We definitely don’t have the technology for water movies yet and this movie proves that even with a Disney budget.. we just aren’t there… yet.. (i’m mentioning that the underwater scenes, looked weird because I don’t usually notice stuff like that)
Water, she’s a tricky mistress.
I’m watched this movie with the eyes of an adult and I felt Scuttle was in the movie a bit too much, like even if we remove my distaste for Awkwafina.. I felt her scenes could have gone more to Ariel being on the surface, human Ursula or Ariel’s sisters. The screen time could have been utilized better. (Speaking of human Ursula, she was great)
I grew a small hatred for that blue dress Ariel had to wear. It was cute for day one and if she was staying with the village people, I’d understand her having to wear it all the time but she wasn’t… she was staying at a big beautiful castle with royalty. She should have been wearing more than that one dress. Unless one of the deleted scenes shows her struggling to get a different dress on. See I could understand that. The one dress just doesn’t make sense. Like it didn’t even show if this was her favorite dress. (Did they spend all of their money on the underwater scenes?)
Instead of that raggedy blue dress, I would have rather the silver dress that animated Ariel gets when her father turns her into a human. Like THAT is what I wanted. (Like what do you mean the sea has magic and he couldn’t even give her any clothes)

Renfield (2023)
Tumblr media
If those who would most enjoy Renfield go into it with low expectations, they’ll find an imperfect film that (mostly) caters to their tastes. This movie has such a great premise and such a good cast. If only the screenplay and story were better. I liked it more than I didn’t but while watching, I kept wondering “I should love this… why don’t I?”
Like in the novel by Bram Stoker, R. M. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) is transformed into Dracula’s familiar when he meets the Count (Nicholas Cage) in the early 20th century. Unlike in the novel, Dracula and Renfield survive and defeat Van Helsing, along with every subsequent would-be vampire slayer they encounter. In modern day, Renfield has grown tired of the abuse Dracula throws his way. While searching for fresh victims for his master, Renfield crosses paths with Teddy Lobo (Ben Schwartz), the son of the notoritious Lobo crime family. The bloody aftermath catches the attention of police officer Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), who holds a grudge against the Lobos and is looking for an ally against them.
Even without doing any research, I could’ve told you from his performance alone, that Nicolas Cage is a massive fan of 1931’s Dracula. It’s pretty clear Robert Kirkman (who pitched the story but did not write the screenplay) and director Chris McKay are too. The film begins by showing us new versions of the most well-known scenes from the 1931 film, with the sets either recreated with immaculate attention to detail or the new actors digitally added in. For anyone who loves the Universal Monsters, it’s a delight to see new performers re-interpret the material. Remember the first time you saw the Spanish version of “Dracula”? It’s that exciting. Cage, in particular, is such a good fill-in for Bela Lugosi. Hoult doesn’t quite look like Dwight Frye and may not bring the same intensity to the role, but he turns out to be a wholly different kind of servant to this prince of darkness anyway, so it won’t bother you at all.
After the dynamite intro, we dig into the story. It’s a fun idea to show Renfield, now 90 years into his servitude, getting fed up with his situation. There are some good laughs as Dracula physically and emotionally abuses Renfield while he slowly builds the courage he needs to face this vampire he could never hope to defeat on his own. This Count doesn’t insta-die when exposed to sunlight, is super strong, immortal, able to fly, can transform into a swarm of bats, hypnotize people, turn into mist and recover from practically any injury given enough time and blood.
The problem with Renfield is that we don’t explore the vampire-familiar dynamic enough. The Lobos and Officer Quincy plot, with Renfield stuck in the middle, eats up about 60% of the film. While the scenes of Quincy and Renfield teaming up against a bunch of Lobos goons means there’s plenty of comedic gore, that's not what you came to see. Then, when we finally get back to Dracula, he announces he’s going to take over the world! With Renfield gaining superhuman strength and agility whenever he eats bugs, this horror-comedy (and I use the word horror in theory here, as none of this picture is even remotely frightening) starts to feel an awful lot like a superhero film. A superhero film that isn’t taking itself seriously but come on. I came here for a vampire movie with a fun anti-romance twist. Give me that!
Since I mentioned the gore, I want to praise the special effects. There are many shots of people get their arms torn off or getting ripped apart, gutted or dispatched in other hideous ways. In any other movie, you might ask “wait, how did they even manage to stand upright if they were that easy to turn to shreds?”. Here, it’s all part of the fun. The most impressive SFX are in the scenes showing Dracula in various states of injury. Be it a scorched skeleton that can talk or a gooey blood sucker with half his skull showing and all sorts of bits barely hanging on, it’s all mega gross and well done. I’m pretty sure most actors hate having to sit in chairs while tons of makeup are applied to them, but I’d wager that after seeing the results, Cage was like “oh yeah, I’m totally willing to do with 4-5 more times.”
In the end, I’m going to rate Renfield right down the middle. More than once, I was loving it. I felt like this movie had been made specifically for me. Far too often, however, it let me down. I know it probably doesn’t make any sense, but it’s a disappointment that I’m nonetheless glad I saw and have some affection for. (September 10, 2023)

I see a lot of people not liking the new little mermaid live action casting because Ariel is black and I think that’s stupid people should care that they casted a person who couldn’t sing as Ursula and also the movie is going to be bad not because of the main actress but because Disney is going to fuck up the plot like they have with every single live action remake
Yeah, honestly. A black version of The Little Mermaid had potential imo, but the more I think about it, and as I look at the cast, I just see issues.
They didn't even make Ariel's family a black family, and, not to sound like a hotep or anti-divestor or whatever it is, but I don't love the subliminal of a black girl forfeiting her culture, family, her magical mermaid-ness and her voice for a white prince. I just feel like that's a little bit odd...
Tumblr media
I don't get why they couldn't have set it in the West Indies and had a mostly black/Caribbean cast? I feel like that setting would feel right. I guess my hopes were too high though.
+Awkwafina as Scuttle and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian... I mean first of all, I don't love the casting, but second of all I AM AFRAID TO SEE THESE CGI FISH TALKING after the Lion King 2019 bro 💀 And this time, they'll be the minority so I feel like it'll be weirder to see their unemotional eyes.
Tumblr media
AYY AYY AYY THAT RIGHT THERE'S A DINGLEHOPPER
Tumblr media
This ting ominously speaking shaky Patois imagine 💀
Tumblr media
AYO IT'S LIVE ACTION FLOUNDER 💀💀💀💀
And that's not even discussing the actual movie itself, that's just the surface level stuff. I'm with you in thinking that the actual content of the movie will be watered down, unless they plan to change the story a lot but I don't see them doing that too much. They have said that Ariel will have a little more power in this version, so whatever they do with that, and the additional run-time, we can only hope will actually be impactful and inspiring.
Sidebar: I love the original, but Eric always reminds me of that guy from the episode of Bojack where Diane goes to Vietnam and pretends to not speak English... Like, bro, you're literally happy to basically talk to yourself the whole time and never even pass her a piece of paper or something 😬? But yeah, in a live-action version, I feel like it will be harder to suspend the disbelief that Eric never thought to get a piece of paper. Or maybe he will? But then I don't see how Ursula could intervene in that case.
I personally feel like there's a certain wonder and magic to stylised animation that 'live-action' (cause Lion King 2019 was 'live' animals right...? It was an animated remake, just realistic) versions don't really capture. I kind of remember enjoying Jungle Book (2016) when it came out, but I think they attempted to make it less magical and a bit more intimidating/gritty in the remake, which kind of worked (though, it's not something I'd go out of my way to rewatch).
Coral reefs, mermaids and romance though? I don't really see them executing that in a live-action well. Like, maybe it's just me, but the OG was a lot of jokes/light-heartedness (aside from the ending, which I think has potential to be really cool & terrifying in the live-action version), I don't really feel like that charm will translate when you try and bring it into the real world.
ALSO SORRY I rewatched parts of the movie I don't remember as well to make this post, not Ursula calling Ariel "THE LITTLE TRAMP" cause she was about to get kissed 💀💀. That's sort of another area where I feel like it'll be harder to suspend disbelief when they're trying to set it in reality with this medium (?)... if Ariel, looking like Halle Bailey, was trying to kiss Eric, irl that mf wouldn't hesitate, what are we even talking about 🤣🤣?!
But anyways, I'll be going to watch it, both to show some love for black female lead and because I love going to the cinema. The racists can keep their "go woke, go broke" shit, we not going broke, baby.
To finish, I know people find it annoying but I hope they at least put hints of a environmental conservation spin on it, since coral reefs like the one Ariel lives in are dying out :(

Disney's upcoming movie releases
Disney is releasing many movies in cinemas and on the Disney+ streaming service. Family-friendly prequels and live-action remakes of cherished cartoon masterpieces are also included. The business adjusted its release calendar for future movies from its different studios this week. To view every title coming out in 2019, scroll down!
The Little Mermaid will be remade in live-action by Disney and released in theaters the following year. The movie, which stars Halle Bailey (The Color Purple, Grown-ish), tells the tale of Ariel, a mermaid princess who strikes a bargain with a sea witch to transform into a human so she may experience life on land and fall in love.
Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric in the movie, while Melissa McCarthy, who starred in Bridesmaids, plays Ursula. Oscar winner Javier Bardem plays King Triton, Daveed Diggs plays Sebastian in Hamilton, Jacob Tremblay plays Flounder in Room, and Awkwafina, the breakthrough star of Crazy Rich Asians, plays Scuttle.
Based on the adored animation classic, Aladdin will soon be a live-action film. Guy Ritchie is the director, Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, and Naomi Scott plays Jasmine. In this rough retelling of the Arabian Nights, Aladdin encounters Princess Jasmine and discovers a magic lamp (Naomi Scott). He only fully sees his value once she unintentionally releases a giant genie.
Both fresh recordings of the songs and a fantastic score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken are featured in the movie. It also has many DVD extras, such as an entertaining interactive 3D tour inside the Genie's lamp and a virtual trip on a magic carpet.
Disney transports you deep into the African wilderness with The Lion King, their 32nd animated film. It relates to the tale of Simba, a brave little cub who will grow up to rule the jungle. One of the all-time top-grossing animated movies is this one. It has music by Elton John and Hans Zimmer and a cast of believable animal characters.
The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earl Jones, and Beyonce Knowles-Carter as the voice actors. The successful animated feature Finding Nemo was followed up with Finding Dory. In a quest to find her family, she reunites everyone's favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres).
Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote and directed the first, is in charge of this. Thomas Newman, a composer for movies including Skyfall, The Help, and WALL-E, also contributed music to the movie. This tale of a fish in and out of water is full of emotional weight and recognizable characters, even though the plot doesn't attempt to rival Finding Nemo in terms of brains. Disney Pixar is a resounding winner.
Captain Jack, a down-on-his-luck character, senses the winds of misfortune blowing his way in Disney's newest swashbuckling adventure forcefully. He must now travel a dangerous sea in search of the fabled Trident of Poseidon, assisted by a clever and attractive astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy. As the swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp makes a comeback. His new castmates include Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, and the villainous Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.
The first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, the ninth and final movie in the Skywalker saga, has been made available by Disney. The movie recounts the Resistance's struggle against the Galactic Empire and the malevolent First Order under the command of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Domhnall Gleeson, Billy Dee Williams, and Naomi Ackie, a debutant, appear in the movie. J.J. Abrams, who also authored the script, is directing it.
One of the most well-liked attractions in Disney history is The Haunted Mansion. It is a classic and has been around for over 50 years. In 2023, a movie adaptation of the attraction is scheduled to debut, starring LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Jared Leto, and Jamie Lee Curtis, among others.
The narrative centers on Gabbie (Dawson), a single mother who moves into a mansion in New Orleans and learns about the building's extensive history of hauntings. She asks a priest, a historian, and tour guides to help exorcise her house.

croa croa
Les oiseaux - The Birds - Internet - 1h59 - 🇺🇸🐦‍⬛🦜

Shang Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings Shows How Far We’ve Come and the Progress We Still Have to Make
Tumblr media
I have a confession to make: I’ve never seen a Marvel movie. I have found the garish overuse of CGI too distracting in the trailers, so I’ve always strayed away and stuck with action movies that emphasize practical effects (e.g., the Mission: Impossible and John Wick franchises). But Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings piqued my interest because of the fantastic cast (Simu Liu! Awkwafina! Michelle Yeoh!), and I knew I wanted to write about it for this class. Although I found the computer-generated special effects distracting, I thought the story, with themes regarding identity and family, was excellently told by a cast that has long broken barriers in Hollywood.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings follows Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) as he is beckoned back home to China to confront the mysterious Ten Rings organization and wrestle with his family’s complicated dynamics. In the beginning of the movie, there are themes of immigration, with Shang-Chi anglicizing his name to Shaun when moving to the United States. This mirrors Liu’s real-life journey, as he was born in China and immigrated to Canada at five-years-old. In 2021, Liu wrote a guest column in Variety talking about his families’ encounters with racism. This is further reflected in A Different Mirror, where Ronald Takaki explains the history of racism experienced by Asian immigrants in the US. The Chinese Exclusion Act passed in the United States in 1882 further propelled this racism, where then-President Rutherford Hayes explained his reasoning for the act by stating “the present Chinese invasion…[is] pernicious and should be discouraged.” In 1943, this act that had been rooted in racism was finally repealed.
Liu’s experiences with racism after immigrating to the United States are telling that progress is not yet done. However, Liu himself is helping break barriers, being the lead in the first Marvel movie with a predominantly Asian cast. Other cast members, including Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh, have also broken barriers: Awkwafina was the first actress of Asian-American descent to win a Golden Globe in the Best Musical or Comedy Category (for Lead Actress of The Farewell) while Michelle Yeoh was the first actress of Asian descent to win an Academy Award for Best Actress (for Everything Everywhere All at Once).
youtube
A skit from Simu Liu’s episode hosting SNL where he and cast member Bown Yang compete over being the “First Asian” to do things such as “First Asian Man to Deadpan on Splash Mountain.”
One particular stand-out scene in Shang-Chi is the bus fight that mirrors the iconic action movie Speed and is similar in style to the films of Jackie Chan, who is one of the most recognizable Asian actors in the world. Furthermore, the bus fight scene is soundtracked by DJ Snake, whose music video for “Turn Down for What” featured a predominantly Asian cast, which was “revolutionary in its day”...which was 2014. Since then, progress in representation has been made.
youtube
The bus fight in Shang-Chi, which mirrors action movie Speed (1994), which stars Keanu Reeves, who is of Chinese-Hawaiian descent on his father’s side.
It is clear that Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings was an important stepping stone for representation in both movies and Marvel. Since the release of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018, there have been more movies featuring predominantly Asian casts, including Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) and Joy Ride (2023). However, the magic of the movie theater cannot fix everything, and Anti-Asian racism still unfortunately exists in the United States. Liu offers up a solution, explaining “Anti-Asian racism is very real, and it will not be solved with an opulent rom-com or Marvel superhero, but with you — the bystanders — acknowledging the validity of our pain.” Just as Shang-Chi does in the movie, we must acknowledge our painful past, realize our mistakes, and embrace the best version of ourselves in order to move forward and forge a better future for everyone.

Rachel (re)watches: Raya and the Last Dragon
this is one of those movies that I really enjoyed in the moment but the more thought I gave it the more holes I noticed. But my sister hasn’t seen it yet so I guess I’ll give it another watch
oh also SPOILERS, obviously
I don’t want to judge this too harshly since it was made during quarantine, but I could hear EVERY hitch in the audio of the opening narration
…should I get into audio editing?
god, even Daniel Dae Kim’s voice is attractive 🥰
Um, aCTuALly, Dr. Seuss invented the word ‘nerd,’ so a fantasy character wouldn’t—
y’all, young Namaari’s VA is only seven years younger than Gemma Chan??? truly what’s the point?
what’s the last Disney movie I thoroughly enjoyed?… oh fuck I think it was Moana
Strange World better break this streak, but I kiiiiinda doubt it will (I don’t mean I think it’s gonna suck but I just don’t think it’ll be as good as Moana - who am I kidding nothing will ever be as good as Moana)
AND ANOTHER THING - why’d they have young Namaari played by a different actor but not young Raya? like it’s not a big deal but???
I agree with that one person on letterboxd, the message of this movie is hella irresponsible
that said, this would make a perfectly good YA novel
also the soundtrack SLAPS
why is every Disney animal sidekick’s personality just “dog”?
I do appreciate what they were trying to do with this movie, I'll give ‘em that
Awkwafina did nothing wrong. If Mulan or Tarzan came out now people would be dragging Eddie Murphy and Rosie O'Donnell for their performances and you know it
lotta weirdly modern jokes/references in this
no seriously what is Sisu’s magic??? (wow a revival era disney movie not tying up a huge loose end who coulda seen that coming)
wait, is this still the revival or are we in a new era now? I feel like this should be a new era - like RBTI and onward
oh wow Gemma Chan does a really good American accent (idk if this reads as sarcastic but I do mean it)
if I have to keep watching my sister and her boyfriend be all gross and sappy out the corner of my eye I will leave the room
uM, aCtUaLLy, water doesn’t cancel out spici—
I will say my sister just made a Great Stone Dragon joke that gave me a good laugh
I don’t know why the whole “modern-feeling jokes in a rural fantasy setting” thing works in something like, say, Avatar but it just doesn’t work here (“rural” might not be the right word but hopefully you know what I mean)
for a movie that tries to hammer in its message so intensely, they do absolutely nothing to try and pay it off, and I think that’s really my biggest issue with it overall
update: I left the room but it wasn’t because of them… okay, not entirely because of them
did he just say “bad-axery”.
every time she mentions Pengu all I can think is “noot noot”
“I don’t know why they chose me.” And frankly neither do I because the movie never explains it
if I control-F the word “trust” on this screenplay how many hundreds of results do you think I’ll get?
okay the sad scene’s coming up and I have now well and truly left the room
holy shit I just came back and the movie’s almost over how long was I gone???
aaaaand that’s the end of the movie. I hate to say it but I think I actually liked it less this time around- it’s like the anti-Turning Red
oh my god even the ending song says “trust” a million and seven times (still love Jhené Aiko though)

If I had a nickel for everytime I kinned a character played by my least favorite actors:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll have 2 nickels, which isn’t alot, but it’s weird it happened twice, right?
(I am a loser older sibling who foolishly trust and give gifts to everyone)

They’re tearing Awkwafina’s ass up on Twitter and I’m cackling. From her name on down I cannot stand her and that minstrel show she insists on performing. Her whole career needs to die.
