I'll be honest there was a lot of Simon and Garfunkel on the "things you keep playing" list. That feels accurate.

3. See Me, Feel Me - The Who

Yeah so I have no explanation for this but it's true I never skip it. Idk I like rock operas.

4. Make Me Smile (Come up and see me) - Steve Harley

If you don't think you know this, you probably actually do. The soundtrack to every feel good montage lol.

5. The Promise - Girls Aloud

So this is straightforwardly the greatest pop song ever made I don't know what else to tell you.

Okay, y’all know I love the music games, but I do not use Spotify 😭 I have Slacker, which isn’t even called Slacker anymore, and Pandora. Mostly I listen to music on YouTube (because I love watching a live performance and/or video lol). Anywho, so I’m just gonna pick 5 songs that I know I listen to wayyy too much lol.

1. Tevin Campbell - Round and Round

This has been my jam since I was like 4 lol

2. Aretha Franklin - Jump

This song is too short lol, so I often immediately play it again after listening initially. Idk it just never fails to put me in a good mood and make me want to dance.

3. Toni Braxton - Please

Was this a hit? I’m gonna have to double check, but I feel like it wasn’t a “real” hit, and I’ve always thought that was a shame. Well, it was a hit in my bedroom lol.

4. Ariana DeBose & Chris Pine - At All Costs

Idc idc I will die on the hill that this movie was good and cute, and so were the songs 🤷🏾‍♀️

5. Sammy Davis Jr. - Mr. Bojangles

I enjoy this almost too much. Don’t let us be playing music in my parents’ kitchen on a Sunday. I’m going to play this, and if the wine is right, I’m going to do a mini performance lol.

Hmm… maybe I need to start trying out some newer music 😬😂 I know it’s nothing to be proud of, but I’ve had essentially the same taste in… everything since I was like 6 😂

Want to hear my most random unpopular opinion? I never liked “Ether.” More specifically, I was never impressed by “Ether.” I always found it to be borderline lazy, like something any pissed off 12 year old who had a picture of Jay-Z and a passing knowledge of his radio hits could’ve written. I’ll die on the hill that “Takeover” won that battle and the war.

Let’s start with the fact that the beat for “Takeover” is better. It just is. Now let’s go to the lyrics. With a diss track, I’ve always felt that the listener shouldn’t really even get all of the insults/digs, because the song isn’t for us, so much as it’s for the person/people being “dissed.” Like, yeah, Nas and Mobb Deep should know exactly what Jay Z is talking about the second they hear it, but I, a random 15 year old in the Midwest, should have to follow the clues - it should take me a minutes to understand everything Jay is alluding to.

And that is my problem with Ether. I can make some jokes about somebody’s lips and say they hate women, but it doesn’t make me a good lyricist lol. Side note: Nas must’ve forgotten about his song “Owe Me,” when he wrote the you hate women line lmaoo. Y’all both kinda hate women, so 😭

Anywho, idk, I guess with all the talk of rap beefs and people waxing poetic about “Ether” online, I just had to say again how much not better than “Takeover” it is lol

#for the record i don’t like either of these fools #i kinda wish jay z would take a swan dive off the brooklyn bridge lol #but if i’m feeling nostalgic and listening to one of them it’s not gonna be nas 😭

Just gonna recommend the first three songs off the top of my head that I don’t see folks talking about nearly enough:

“Trial Time” - The Last Mr. Bigg

Listen, this song went triple platinum on my iPod Nano after my older brother introduced it to me. It’s hilarious and just a good example of storytelling rap. Plus, when I need to get hype to go into the office and see people, it always does the trick lol.

“Whole Lotta Something Going On” - Raphael Ravenscroft

Every time I listen to this, which is pretty darn often lol, I think about writing another SamBucky love triangle fic. Also, the saxophone really makes this song 🎶

“Dying to Live” - Edgar Winter

Do any of y’all remember the show Life Goes On? Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da Life Goes On? The one, the only, Patti LuPone Life Goes On?!!! Anywho, it came on in syndication when I was like 9, and I’d be in my room seated! Lmao Mostly because I’ve always been an old woman at heart, but anyway, in the series finale they play this song, and I’ve been obsessed ever since 🤷🏾‍♀️ When I want to get emotional I’ll put this on and sing the hell out of it lol

Betty Wright is slept on in general, let’s start there. A lot of folks know “Clean Up Woman” and “Tonight is the Night,” but nothing else. This is my favorite of her songs. No sample ever did it justice, and Betty was only 15 when she recorded this ;)

“Ooo La La La” - Teena Marie

Often sampled, but I rarely here anyone playing the real version. You know what we need? More fics where SamBucky (or SamSteve) have kids… and we need them to be written by someone who has at least interacted with a human child before lmaoo. Yo, I’ll never forget this time I was reading a SamBucky fic that had a cool plot (I don’t even recall what it was, but I remember trying to hang in there because the plot had potential), but I eventually had to give up because their kid was so sassy that I was lowkey offended 😭. Like she was doing the most… sassy and bad, like disrespectful bad, but mostly sassy. It was pissing me off because it wasn’t even like necessary for the plot, and all I remember thinking was that the author couldn’t have possibly ever seen a kid interact with their parents before because it was just so unrealistic.

Anyway, yeah, more kid fics, but not Disney kid fics lol
