Cam’s breath stole away in his chest. The sunlight glittered around the two teenage girls on the dock. They were giggling amongst one another, enjoying the beautiful summer day.
Cam hadn’t thought much of the girl on the left. He’d known her nearly all of his life. Both of their fathers were leaders in the church, separated by their towns. They’d grown up with nearly identical lifestyles.
Her mother died when she was born, and Cam had killed his own just a few years earlier. But their fathers were the same in how they treated them. The kids were nothing more than a sign to the town that they were a ‘normal family’ otherwise.
They’d bonded over summers together at Camp Motega ever since they were five, and both of them had been promoted to counselors when they were old enough. Charlotte was in charge of a group of day campers around five to seven with four other girls, and he had been put in charge of the fourteen- to seventeen-year-olds.
“CAM!”
Cam’s heart raced as she waved at him, and he made his way over to the two women on the dock. The girl beside her gave him a curious once over, “CAM! This is my friend Sarah. She’s new to Camp Motega this year! Sarah, this is Cam. He’s positively amazing, and practically my best friend since I was in diapers.”
“Charlotte,” Cam blushed, looking away from the girls, “I-“
“She’s from your town too, Cam. Did you know that?” Charlotte asked, interrupting him, “Sarah lives just a few blocks from you! Well, her and her grandmother. Isn’t that amazing?”
“Small world!” Cam said politely through pursed lips.
He was trying to play it cool.
“Yeah,” Sarah agreed, not really concerned with the male who was seventeen. She turned to her fifteen-year-old friend and fellow camper, “I didn’t see you around the tents, Charlotte. Are y-“
“Oh, I’m a counselor for the younger kids!” Charlotte exclaimed excitedly, cutting yet another person off, “I get to stay in one of the cabins because of it. I-I actually got paired up with Cam this year…”
“It was a practical joke,” Cam sighed, reminding the younger woman that a few of the other guy counselors thought it would be funny if they all shifted around until he and Charlotte were the only two left, which would force them into a cabin together, “they think It’ll be funny to put us together because of who are fathers are!”
Charlotte frowned, hearing the edge to Cam’s voice. She gave him a soft, reassuring smile, “hey…the joke is on them. I love getting to bunk with you, Cam…you’re wonderful!”
“YOU RAPED HER!”
Cam’s jaw tensed as he pinned Sarah against the wall. The knife bit into her throat, “DON’T YOU DARE TALK ABOUT HER. I DIDN’T RAPE HER. I-“
“She left town after what happened at Camp Motega,” Sarah reminded him, “Her father moved them two towns over to create distance! She started getting home schooled. Stopped talking to people. She never left her house!”
“BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU!” He accused angrily, pressing the cool metal even more against the column of her throat. A scarlet line fell down her neck and Cam felt himself growing even more angry, “PEOPLE LIKE YOU PUT IT IN HER HEAD THAT WHAT WE HAD WAS WRONG! THAT WHAT WE DID WAS WRONG! BUT IT WAS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT PUSHED US TOGETHER! YOU ALL THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUNNY TO THROW HER AT ME LIKE SOME SICK JOKE. SO WHEN WE STARTED, ALL OF YOU MADE HER THINK THAT WE WERE SINNING AND-“
“She was my friend!”
“YOU SHAMED HER!” he accused, “WHEN YOU AND YOUR GRANDMOTHER MOVED AWAY, YOU TOLD HER THAT WE WERE DISGUSTING. THAT WHAT WE DID-“
“IT WAS!” She screamed back, “she was younger than you, Cam. You groomed her!”
“I LOVED HER!” he spat, “I LOVED HER WITH EVERYTHING I HAD IN ME. SHE ACCEPTED ME FOR WHO I WAS, FOR THE MONSTER THAT I HAD HIDDEN. AND SHE LOVED ME! BUT YOU MADE HER PUSH ME AWAY. YOU. MY FATHER. HER FATHER. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE’S LIKE NOW BECAUSE OF YOU PEOPLE.”
Before he could get any more aggressive, Dylan rushed him, swinging wildly. Cam was pushed away from Sarah, and she dropped to her knees, finding the breath she didn’t know that she was missing.
“The knife!” Sarah called, reminding her husband of the predicament that they were in, and the fact that the assailant had a weapon.
But Cam was already gone, lost in the memory of the woman that he was meant to love since the beginning of time.
“Cam, what are you doing?” she giggled as the seventeen-year-old wrapped his arms around her waist. Her eyes went wide, and she turned around so that she was facing him, “Cam…p-people will see us!”
“Let them see then,” he chuckled, pressing gentle kisses to her cheeks and over the bridge of her nose, “I want everyone to know that you and I are together. I want us to be with each other all the time, Charlotte.”
“Our fathers…” Cam frowned as she pushed him away, her blush turning into a more embarrassed gesture as she tried to smooth out the skirt of her dress. She looked back towards the house where everyone was enjoying the going-away party for Sarah and her grandmother, “What will everyone else say, Cam?”
He frowned, his hands reaching out to her stomach, “I don’t care what they’ll say…it’s me and you, Charlotte…we’ve known each other for forever…this-it feels right!”
“We-we aren’t married. This whole thing…summer camp, it-“
“I love you!” he said firmly, his brow furrowing as he looked at her, “and I want a future with you. I want this! If a ring is what you want, I-I’ll give it to you. I will!”
“Cam-“
“Say you love me too…”
“I-I do, but-“
“Then no buts!”
“We can’t do this!” she said firmly, shaking her head, “I-I have to tell my dad. Before I start showing. I-“
“Hey guys!”
The couple turned towards the woman that had spoken. Charlotte swallowed nervously as she looked at Sarah, “he-hey Sarah…great party…”
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing!” Cam said firmly, shooting Charlotte a look, “we were just talking about how much we were going to miss you!”
“Yeah!” she agreed quickly, “We were just talking about you! Cam was heading back in though, right Cam?”
“I’ll meet you inside?” Cam offered, looking to her. She nodded and he made a quick exit. Sarah’s polite smile turned to an angry frown the second he disappeared behind the house. She turned towards Charlotte.
“You’re disgusting, you know that?”
“WH-what?”
“You heard me,” Sarah huffed, shooting her friend a look. Charlotte instinctively put a hand over her stomach, before trying to play it off and smoothing out her dress once more, “Get rid of it!”
Charlotte’s eyes met her friend, “Sarah. I-I don’t want to…Cam and I-“
“He’s just being nice because you two know each other,” she scoffed, “he doesn’t really want it…”
“No…he does. We do. I-“
“You’re going to get rid of it, Charlotte,” Sarah said in a threatening tone, “he doesn’t love you…not really. Couldn’t you see it at camp? He only ever paid attention to you when it was just the two of you in that cabin alone.”
“He-he loves me…”
“For now,” Sarah shrugged, “but what happens when you get fat from the baby? And when you get old?”
“I-“
“You know what…maybe you’d just be better off killing yourself…a slut like you probably seduced him in the first place,” she scoffed, “I remember how you hung all over him at camp even though he was interested in me…how would that look? A preacher’s daughter seducing the other preacher’s son? Not looking so good for you if word got out…I know what both of your dads would do…Cam would crumble and blame you and you would be all alone. Fat and pregnant…is that the life you want?”
“I-I didn’t. I’m not that kind of gi-“
“Who do you think they’ll believe, Charlotte?” she questioned, “a knocked up teenager, or someone like me? All I would have to do is bat my eyes at Cam…it doesn’t matter that I’m moving. I could have him saying you seduced him before the end of the day. I could have so many rumors swirling about you before I left. I-“
“Why are you doing this, Sarah?” Charlotte questioned, tears lining her eyes, “Wh-what did I do to you? I thought you were my friend!”
“Just think,” Sarah smiled, “all it took was a little bit of rumors before I left. She nearly drove herself insane and lost the baby…and it made you go spiraling down…would make the killings seem logical once everyone pieces it all together. They’ll never suspect it…Cam Henry and Charlotte Weber came back together after all these years…”
“Sarah, what the hell are you talking about?”
Sarah looked to her husband who held Cam still in a choke hold. She ran the knife across his throat as the banging increased, “You want your story…this is it…”
“I-is he innocent?” Dylan asked, eyes wide.
“You can’t do this, Sarah!” Cam said angrily, “do what you want with me, but leave Charlotte alone! You put her through enough. You-“
“She should have never interfered that summer then,” Sarah spat, “all she had to do was stay out of my way. But once I kill you, all I need to do is point them in her direction…”
“Wh-what did you do, Sarah?”
She smiled, “the same thing I’m going to do to you, Cam…I killed your little beloved slut hours ago. Made her slit her own throat…but not before writing the ultimate confession. The police will find her suicide note…a note claiming that you forced her into an unwanted relationship…how she’d been your secret mistress for years and your sick little killing co-conspirator…but that she couldn’t take it any longer. That the guilt was just eating away at her…”
Cam felt the tears sliding down his cheeks, “Sh-she’s dead?”
“Don’t worry, Cam…you’ll be with her soon!” she answered flatly, dragging the knife across his throat.
Dylan released Cam as he bled out on the stairs. The door flew open as the police burst in and she dropped the knife. Their eyes never left one another as Dylan saw the woman that he married, truly, for the first time in his life.
“It was you…”
“And it ends here…”
