Book Review: Square Eyes

The story explores ideas around identity, reality, memory, and freedom. As the back of the book itself says: In a city built on digital illusion, who really holds the power?

While the story and concepts are interesting, it is truly the art that brings them to life. It’s outstanding. The level of detail, use of colour, the overlaying of reality with the digital world, the digital interfaces, the use of negative space.

June didn’t really like romance or sex before she met Anna. She’d spent too long with a mother who treated her like hell and punished her with things no mother should, but with Anna none of that mattered, she was loved, treasured and she loved how deeply possessive Anna got anytime her mother tried to come too close. She was Anna’s now. Anna had brought her to bed this time, wrapping her closer and holding her as she cried, smoothing a soft hand through silky hair. June was precious to her and it showed in how tenderly she tended to June, her voice almost a soft purr of pride when June burrowed deeper and begged her to take her for herself. Her touch is tender but still possessive, her fingers curling gently inside June even as June shudders against her, her lips finding June’s ear. “That’s it Babygirl, just like that… who’s my girl?” “Me…” “Say it Baby.” “I’m yours Mommy.”

The pain of her past fades the more Anna loves her, especially like this. Anna’s possessive but tender and June can’t help whimpering when she shivers undone for her. She’s safe at last.

Brain Fog And Beautiful Disasters - Anna Mill/June Frye

A/N: Holy niche ship batman! Fluffy fluff for a sad smol and a sad mommabear. Written for @fluffbruary Day 11.

Olivia brings them together of course. Anna hasn’t forgiven herself her family, she hasn’t forgotten what she did, but she still has the same brain fog that tells her she has to be perfect for anyone she dates, then she meets June. June who’s memories are just as much made of fog and pain. June who isn’t perfect. June who is traumatized and shy and so delicate she needs tenderness. Despite everything her heart aches to heal the girl’s pain, at least a little. June, she discovers, is not perfect, so not perfect that the old urges die at the hands of the broken woman who so badly needs her care. June sleeps peacefully wrapped in Anna’s arms, slim fingers tangled into her sleep shirt, face nestled deeply into her neck. Anna finds peace here too, cradling the woman against her, smoothing her golden hair and murmuring to her. It’s a strange mix, vicious protector and delicate innocence, but it works. The fog lifts.
