Dublin Week 19: Coming Home and Reflecting
Hi there, it's me again, for the last time. I kinda sorta forgot to post last week, but all I really did was study and take a couple of exams, so you didn't miss out on much. The only bit of fun I really got up to was on my final night when me and my friends Colin, Cormac, Stavros, and I went out to the Poolbeg lighthouse and hung out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some pictures from our walk to the lighthouse (I kinda forgot to get a picture of the lighthouse because it was dark by the time we got there)
I also almost missed my flight because I slept through my alarm, but after a panicked taxi ride to the airport, I made it back to the states on time and in one piece.
So, in the absence of any interesting events to talk about, I'm going to leave some of my thoughts on studying abroad in Dublin.
My main takeaway has been that studying abroad was a great decision, and I'm incredibly glad I did this. Over this past semester, I've had the chance to meet with people I never would have interacted with otherwise, saw a beautiful new country, and got to have a completely different college experience for a semester. I also feel like I've become a lot more independent and have learned a lot about how and where I want to live going forward.
That said, there were definitely some less glamorous sides of studying abroad that I think I should touch on. The main one is that it can be a lonely and isolating experience at times. As you might imagine, leaving your friends back home and having to find a whole new group of friends for a semester can be a bit challenging at times. Of course at UCD there were a lot of other international students facing the same challenge as me, but it did take some time and work to find a group of people who I wanted to hang out with. Obviously everyone's mileage will vary with this depending on your roommates, and frankly a bit of luck, but it's something to keep in mind.
My best advice for avoiding this loneliness is to find a club or society that has regular events. For me that was the mountaineering club; 4 times a week they had climbing I could go to in the evenings, and then on top of that they had hikes every Sunday and some overnight trips. Mountaineering was where I found a group of people who shared my interests, and they were also just a group of sound people. Although UCD doesn't have nearly as many clubs as UMich does, there are still plenty of clubs for all kinds of interests, and I'd really recommend joining them, especially if you want to meet any Irish people.
This brings me to one of my gripes with UCD. UCD is primarily a commuter school. Although they have a reasonable amount of on campus housing, the vast majority of the students live off campus and commute to class, and many of them even live at home with their families. This means that it can be hard to meet and interact with locals. Although your classes will obviously be mostly Irish students, after class hours, a large chunk of the campus population is international students. While these international students are all lovely people, this does occasionally make it difficult to interact with locals in a social setting. However, as I mentioned above, joining a club is a great way to remedy this issue.
Onto Dublin, and Ireland as a whole I guess. Dublin and Ireland are lovely places that are definitely worth visiting, and I loved living there for a semester. The country is beautiful, there's always stuff happening in the city, and the people are very welcoming and friendly. That said, there are some drawbacks that I should mention.
The weather is kinda awful for most of the semester. Although it doesn't get as cold as Ann Arbor, it's not particularly warm either, and there's a lot more rain. Like a lot more. It doesn't always rain that hard, but a week will not go by without at least a drizzle happening as you walk between classes. And even when it's not raining, it normally looks like it's about to. The weather definitely got a lot nicer at the end of the semester, but if you're studying here, get ready for a lot of grey weather.
Dublin is not a super easy city to get around in. Transit in Dublin kind of sucks. Unlike a lot of other European cities, there is no metro, and the only commuter rail they have is very limited and not particularly close to campus. This means you'll be spending a lot of time on busses. The busses are good enough, but during rush hour they slow down a lot in traffic, and they don't always come when they say they will. Additionally, the busses aren't great at getting you places laterally in Dublin. If you want to go in and out of city center, it's great, but if you want to go east or west from campus, your options are a lot more limited. Biking is normally faster than the busses, but the bike lanes can be a bit scary at times, and you also have to have a bike in the first place.
Traveling around Europe is a bit difficult from Dublin. Since Ireland isn't in mainland Europe, if you want to travel, you have to fly. Ryanair flights are typically pretty affordable, especially if you plan ahead, but nothing beats the ease and simplicity of hopping on a train. Also your Ryanair flight WILL be delayed by at least 30 mins, just get used to it. Besides being an hour a way from UCD, the Dublin airport is great and really easy to navigate since it's relatively small.
Despite all these drawbacks, there is nowhere else I would have rather studied this semester. Ireland is an incredible place, and all things considered, the gripes I had with Ireland really weren't that big of a deal. As I mentioned earlier, there is so much to do in Ireland, and the people are really great. Additionally, the fact that everyone speaks English is a huge upside because it means you can actually interact with the locals. Although Ireland isn't perfect, nowhere is going to be perfect (except for Ann Arbor of course), and part of the fun of moving to a new place is figuring out all of its quirks and learning how to deal with them.
TLDR: Ireland is a great place to study abroad, even though weather and transportation can be a bit crummy.
So those are my thoughts on studying abroad in Ireland. At least the ones I could think of now. If you're thinking of studying abroad in Ireland, I'd highly recommend it.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].
Peace out ✌️

Listed: Atlas Maior
Tumblr media
Atlas Maior combines progressive jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Indian music traditions in original songs that nod to tradition without being confined by it. Led by Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) and Josh Peters (oud, lavta), the band will be releasing its next album, Hadal, in early 2023. Here is some of the music that inspires them.
Marcel Khalife—Taqasim
youtube
Khalife's song "Achikain" is currently featured during live Atlas Maior settings. Here Taqasim is a rare example of Marcel performing in a trio setting. Marcel Khalife would come and play Arab Fest in my hometown of Dearborn, MI. We were so fortunate to be able to host this Lebanese legend in our backyard.
Amir Elsaffar + Hyper
youtube
ElSaffar's work, approach, and sound has influenced the band for years. Fairly recently we've been in contact which has been incredible. He deserves every ounce of success that he receives with his phenomenal growing body of work. I also recommend the album Rivers of Sound.
Karim Ziad
youtube
The Maghreb region has influenced Atlas Maior stretching back to before the inception of the group. Here we represent this with Ifrikya. In 2014, our composition "iddaa!" was accepted as part of a live art sound installation within Moroccan taxi cabs for the Marrakech Biennale 5 Art Festival.
Ornette Coleman
youtube
Ornette! Ornette! Ornette! Our latest single Basalt is quite directly influenced by Ornette Coleman. Specifically ,the rubato melody we perform as the beginning melody. Also the fact that we have composed material incorporating two drum sets reminds me of his son Denardo Coleman.
Anour Brahem
youtube
This is such a beautiful album by one of the greats of the oud. Here, Brahem teams up with Holland and Dejohnette on a truly special performance. All of Brahem's albums are fantastic.
Tarek Yamani
youtube
Atlas Maior caught Yamani's La Merce 2019 Festival performance while we were also on tour in Spain. We were captivated by his approach to both Middle Eastern and Western jazz musical contexts. He is able to blend both approaches in such tasteful well thought out manner while demonstrating his command of both traditions.
Naseer Shamma
youtube
Tablas (both Egyptian, and East Indian) have always been a component of Atlas Maior going back to the beginning of the group in 2009. Today we explore the instrument in several of our live settings as the Atlas Maior Tabla Trio, and in the larger quintet setting. Indian and Pakistani music traditions have always inspired us. This is a fine example of Middle Eastern oud, and East Indian tablas.
Ken Vandermark
youtube
There are so many incredible Vandermark records, this one is just great also because of Atlas Maior's deep love of both Funkadelic and Sun Ra. I love the way he interprets these works in a trio setting.
Omar Khorshid
youtube
A long-time influence on the band. Many never think of Khorshid's approach to the electric guitar. His story, music history, and body of work are legendary in the Middle East.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
youtube
Here I've selected a concert from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whom I was into probably five years before forming Atlas Maior. I remember walking around Ann Arbor, MI during a blizzard listening to this album. The legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, definitely one of the world's most prolific voices in all of music history.

Taxi & Limo Businesses vs. Rideshare
Many people assume a rideshare service is the same as or similar to both taxi and limousine services but in essence, its origin is quite different. Rideshare platforms tried to modernize the taxi and passenger driving businesses by making them look less like such things. They also tried bypassing traditional chauffeur standards and hands-on methods of direct fleet management. The Rideshare idea…

The Pros and Cons of Buses
Hey everyone! I’m back with another recap of this past week :)
This past week was Spring Break, and so many people from Michigan visited their friends in Spain. I went out Monday night with my friends as we knew this was the case, and it almost felt as if I was back in Ann Arbor. I saw so many familiar faces and it was honestly such a great time. I had quite a few friends visiting Madrid, so I had the opportunity to grab a lot of dinners with friends who were visiting.
Later in the week, I decided to do a little solo-exploring day within Madrid. I had recently heard about some almond blossoms in a park in Madrid, so after some research I ventured off to Parque la Quinta de los Molinos. It actually turned out to be a pretty chilly day, so I bundled up and then took the metro for about 30 minutes before arriving at the park. The entire area was filled with beautiful almond blossoms, and it started to really feel like Spring. I was able to wander around the park for about an hour and take in all the beautiful sights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After my solo day, it was time to set off for another weekend trip with friends! This past weekend I was able to visit the region known as Andalucía, which is in the South of Spain. This trip was a bit last minute for me, so I wanted to save as much money as possible, so for the majority of this trip I traveled by bus instead of train. This was a very interesting experience, so I’ve decided to lay out some pros and cons:
Pros:
Super cheap/affordable
Not your average bus; similar to a charter bus
Available to so many locations
Flexible travel times
Cons:
Takes the longest
Seats can get cramped
On Friday night, I took an overnight bus to Malaga from Madrid. This was super convenient for me, as I was able to leave Madrid late Friday night, and arrive in Malaga Saturday morning. My bus was also very cheap, coming out to only €18. My only issue was that the ride was 7 hours, which feels extra long when you’re cramped into a bus seat. Saturday morning I arrived in Malaga and met my friends, who had been there since Friday morning. We dropped our stuff at our airbnb and then grabbed some yummy pastries from a local bakery. Then, it was time to hop on another bus! We actually took a €6 bus from Malaga to Nerja, a town about an hour away located on the coast. This by far has been my favorite place in Spain that I’ve visited so far. It was a beautiful day out, and we took this opportunity to go down by the water and walk along the beaches and pathways. Nerja was full of flowers and local shops, and we grabbed some lunch near the water. We then were able to make our way to a lookout point and enjoy the sunshine and the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nerja is relatively small, so we took the second half of the day to visit another town: Frigiliana! This was a 15 minute taxi ride inland from Nerja, and so worth it. I felt as if I had been transported from Spain to Greece, as Frigiliana was full of white buildings with colorful doors and flowers. It’s sandwiched in a valley so we had beautiful views of some mountains, and even were able to climb to a lookout point to take in the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our way back down, we actually stumbled right into Frigiliana’s Carnival parade! We had no idea this was going to happen, but it was so fun watching the parade and having this experience in a small town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then traveled back to Nerja and caught the bus to Malaga. After grabbing some dinner in Malaga we retired back to our airbnb as we had a train ride to Granada the next morning!
On Sunday, we woke up early and took a train to Granada for the second half of our trip! My roommate back in Madrid is actually from Granada, so she came with us and actually hosted me for the weekend. She gave us a little walking tour of Granada where we saw some cool sights and grabbed breakfast.
After this, we went to the Alhambra, which Granada is known for. The Alhambra is a palace/fortress that is one of the best preserved sites of Islamic Architecture. Everyone that I’ve talked to about Granada has said that this is a must-see, and I would have to agree. We arrived there around 2:30pm, and did not leave until 6pm, as there was so much to see and do. We toured the Nasrid Palaces, which were absolutely stunning. The Islamic Architecture was so different compared to other palaces I have seen in Spain so far, and we all found it so beautiful and interesting. We also walked through multiple gardens, and climbed some towers that overlooked all of Granada.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this, we met up with some of my roommates' hometown friends from Granada, and they took us to their favorite local Andalucían restaurant. This was the BEST food I have had in all of Spain so far. The menu was simple and we let them tell us what dishes were best. We all ended up getting Sangrias (which came with huge chunks of fruit) and ordered our dishes: pollo con salsa (chicken with sauce), carne con salsa (meat with sauce), and then meatballs and a salad with octopus. I’m actually so sad that the dishes had such simple names, as I wanted to find similar foods back here in Madrid. But I truly don’t think this meal could ever be replicated, even the girls said it was the best the food has ever tasted from that restaurant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Monday, we took advantage of our last few hours and climbed up to a looking spot in Granada. We did so by going through the Arabic neighborhood, and then on our way down went through the Gypsy neighborhood, where all of the buildings are built into the side of the mountain. The views were spectacular, and it was a great way to end our weekend!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then took a bus back to Madrid, and now it's back to school for just a few days before my parents visit me this weekend! Check back in next week to see what we end up doing :)
