"Women and children first."
When Suguru had spoken those words, eyes fluttering on your tensed form, you'd felt a pang of both embarrassment and relief. You hadn't needed charity nor pity while holding your head high; but with the sounds of swords clattering and grunts of pain, you'd known it would've been impossible to escape on your own.
His hair was loose, a button open at the top of his tunic due to haste, though he had still looked drawn together. Suguru had known his vessel had remained undefeated for some time - he would survive another raid. Brown eyes had set over you as he watched you clamber meekly over to one of the boats before stopping, gaze meeting his own for only a brief time, interrupted to quickly dart at his side.
"Fuck the women, what're they good for? We need to survive." When the crewmate piped up, hand placed over Suguru's shoulder and tightening over the loose shirt, his eyes had still remained over you. He was calm - you should be too.
"Get in the boat."
You followed his command only because he had been your captain, your actions done through some form of bitterness due to your alleged incapacity. If these men had swallowed their pride, you would be fighting alongside them instead of being sent away.
There had been some commotion on the deck between the captain and rogue member as you'd seated yourself within the small wooden boat, though you hadn't worried long before there'd been a thud and sigh. Your eyes trailed to your own clenched fist, and you finally let go of the skirt once bunched in hand, fingers idly tracing the creases.
Suguru leaned over the side of the Kaisen, lowering your craft to sea with a few calculated tugs of rope. "Row east, the Canaries should be close." He'd had to shout as you'd descended lower, inching toward the ebbing water. It would have been a beautiful day if not for the sighting of another vessel.
"You're not coming?" There was a tinge of panic in your voice but as the wood became wet, underbelly kissing salty sea, you'd expected it to be washed out through distance.
Fear wouldn't meddle your face as you peered up with a stern expression, but Suguru knew you well enough to see it. He'd only tilted his head back to laugh.
"What kind of captain abandons his crew?"
You opened your mouth to fight his words, to plead him to flee, but the words died on tongue with recalled memories of his stubbornness.
"I'll see you on the island, then?" There was some give in your voice as you pushed tears down, a small croak hidden among the sea's waves.
He nodded sternly, waving you off and turning on heel. You began to row, only when at some distance did you look back to see the glint of what you thought to be his sword.
