oh i kinda hate how leverage: redemption season 2 ends. astrid just believes sophie & says she’s family? i love sophie, and i know what it’s like to hurt someone when acting in self-preservation or fear… but that’s exactly why i think that astrid deserves to feel however she wants to feel about what sophie did. she was sad and angry when we first saw her. she said she’d devoted her life to catching grifters because sophie ruined her and her father’s lives. like… you don’t just get over that in the course of a day! and you shouldn’t have to!
if she wants to forgive sophie, that’s really great too, i’m not against forgiveness lol - but we saw that astrid very much hadn’t forgiven her just hours earlier, and we didn’t get to see astrid express any of that anger & sadness or come to terms with this whole situation at hand. plus the show had been setting up a very emotional arc for sophie & astrid for quite a few episodes, and then we never actually get much of a payoff. and no proper explanation for why she trusts sophie’s plan and doesn’t want to arrest her.
but instead it makes no sense!! and was super crammed for time, which is probably why we didn’t get much of an explanation. we got more of sophie feeling guilty than astrid getting to process & discuss the thing that was done to HER. i loved all the build up to the finale episodes, but not the episodes themselves :( feel free to disagree though, id kinda like to hear more discussion & perspectives on this!

Sudden drumming on the desk startled you from your morning daydreams. Henry peered down at you with a secret smile, one reserved for the rare occasion he caught you slacking off, though Henry would always follow it up with a forgiving wink. Henry rarely caught you off guard at work, and when he did, he was lenient with his reprimands. Most of the time, you were an astute secretary and completed assistive tasks before Henry mentioned them. You were trustworthy, capable, and much better at keeping track of dates and meetings than his last assistant. In a professional sense, you were the perfect employee, which was why it pained him to ask you into his office that morning.
You sat down in front of his desk as he closed the door. Henry tried to smile while adjusting his tie and fiddling with the button of his suit jacket. By the time he sat down, Henry looked frazzled.
“I’m sorry to take you from your work,” Henry began.
“That’s all right, sir.”
You still insisted on the formal address, even behind closed doors. It never failed to twist his mouth upward. Still, he shuffled a few papers on his desk, sighed, then wiped invisible sleep from his eyes.
“What’s the matter, Henry?” You asked, realizing the meeting wasn’t an excuse to keep you close.
Henry let out another distressed sigh, touched your knee and then sat back in his chair. “I don’t want this, darling. Truly, I don’t.”
“Oh, God. Are you firing me?” You whispered.
“Baby... If you haven’t changed your mind about marrying me—and don’t worry, I’ll still propose to you in the traditional way—then we must separate work from home. And since you are my home, and every time I look at you, I feel my heart drop-kick in my chest, it means you won’t be able to work for me here. It’s only to spare us the headache and gossip. I can’t have my soon-to-be-fiance and mother of my children working for me.”
You pressed your lips and exhaled, as you’d suspected your days at the office would soon expire, especially after the news about Mary’s covert investigation. Henry had insisted he would take care of it, and you’d keep her job, but with the promise of marriage and children on the horizon, his guarantee lost substance.
He reached across the desk and motioned for your hand, intent on squeezing it until the urge to kiss the back of your palm overcame him.
“Please don’t be mad at me, sweetheart. You’re the only person I want at my side.”
“I understand,” you said.
“Really?” His eyes glistened.
You nodded, determined to soothe the regret on his face. “Of course. I want to start our family more than anything. More than I want this job... No offence. It’s a great job, my boss is ridiculously good-looking, and the pay is nice, but... I’d rather marry you and start thinking of names for our twins.”
“Twins?” Henry asked, cheeks burning and eyes glinting.
Again, you nodded. “Yes. It runs in my gene pool. We have a high chance of double-trouble.”
The man across the desk relaxed his shoulders and smiled wide enough to leave indentations around his mouth when he finally composed himself.
“Sweetheart, you make me the happiest man in the world. I love you so much; I can’t stand it sometimes. You’ve been the best employee and an even better partner. As much as it kills me to do this, it’s only for us. I’ll even let you choose your replacement.”
“Good. Then I can make sure you won’t hire some young honey to schedule your meetings and book your flights,” you quipped.
“I’d never—you know I wouldn’t.”
“I’m kidding, Henry.”
“So, you’re not pissed at me?” He asked.
“No, silly. I’m not pissed. I thought we’d be having this conversation much sooner, to be honest. But you held out until the last minute, didn’t you?”
Henry bit his lip, sudden darkness taking over his bright eyes. “I just wanna get you pregnant so badly.”
You shifted closer, leaning over the desk and hugging your arms to your side to push out your breasts. “You mean like this morning when you woke me up at six AM to fuck me and fill me full of cum?”
“God, yes,” he groaned, running his hand over his face as his eyes fluttered. “Exactly like that.”
“Well, then I suppose since you’re canning my ass, you might as well take me out to lunch so you can tap it, too.”
“I can swing that,” said Henry under his breath.
You rose from the seat and winked. “I’ll see you at noon. Maria’s?”
“I was thinking more like Steel Heron.”
“Wow! Very fancy. I hope I can get us a reservation.”
“Make it under Deaver. That should do the trick.”
With a wiggle and a smirk, you quirked one shoulder while crossing to the office door. “My powerful Mr. Deaver.”
“I love you, baby. I wish I could kiss you.”
“You can kiss me all you want in the car later on.”
Henry chuckled. “You got it, gorgeous.”
~*~
When your food arrived after twenty minutes of indecision, you both wolfed down overpriced entrees, then rushed to the parking lot to duck into the backseat of Henry’s car. Once he closed the door, you wrestled his pants down to his knees, taking hold of his half-firm shaft to massage until he grew hard and breathless.
“Get your panties off,” Henry panted. “Quick. Pull them to the side and ride me.”
You scrabbled to sit astride his lap, stretching your underwear over so Henry could prod your entrance with a few mild strokes. He bucked his hips up and met resistance, groaning already.
“Fuck, Henry. I’ll never get used to that cock. You’re so big.”
“And I’ll never get used to this tiny little hole. Oh, my gosh, but you take it so well.”
You sank, moaning from every inch of flesh sliding inside. Clutching at each other, kissing with ferocious intensity, Henry gripped your thighs and guided you back and forth, the momentum rocking the car. The top of your head grazed the roof until Henry wrapped his hand around your nape and pulled you in for a crushing kiss.
“You okay, baby?” He asked, breath hot on your cheek.
“Yes,” you squeaked.
“God, I’m already close. I can’t fucking take it. You’re gonna make me bust.”
“Do it,” you said. “Cum inside me, sir.”
Henry let out a satisfied laugh. “Oh, I will, honey. You’ll be a mommy when the day is through. I’m taking you home later on and fucking you again and again just to be sure.”
“You’re gonna be a daddy soon,” you replied, running your hands through his soft brown hair.
He stuffed his face between your shoulder and jaw, licking at your pulse. “I hope so, baby. Fuck, I hope so.”
As promised, Henry lasted no longer than a few well-angled thrusts. The pulses and spurts filled you, sending shivers over your shoulders and up your neck. When he slackened from his fading orgasm, Henry placed you gently on your back and stared between your legs as your panties rolled back into place, a dark blot forming where his seed leaked out. He couldn’t help himself and reached over to rub your pussy over the thin cotton, feeling the wetness he’d left inside.
“Does it matter how long you keep it inside?” Henry asked after you both rolled down the windows for fresh air.
“I’m not sure. Maybe we can go to a bookstore to find some reading material? We can do some research together.”
“That’s a great idea, honey. But I have that meeting at 4:30, so I might be a little late getting out. If you want to leave, I’ll grab you afterward. You know how those guys gab.”
Henry helped you out of the car, offering his hand for support while you wobbled to the passenger side door. When you ducked in and put on your seatbelt, Henry leaned into the vehicle and kissed you long and hard.
You gave him a knowing smile. “I can’t wait… Daddy.”
Henry blushed all the way back to the office, happy to have you at his side wrestling with a smirk as cum smeared between your thighs underneath your grey pencil skirt.
~*~
As predicted, Henry’s meeting ran late, and you didn’t wait to go home to shower before your outing. Though he’d smattered your legs with cum and it had dried in crusty blotches, you didn’t care. You’d shower and change into comfier clothes for your outing with Henry later.
You whistled on the way home, the repetitive song playing over the radio—something that would usually irritate you—catching you in just the right mood. The drive was long, but you didn’t mind. All you thought about was finding baby books with Henry, then going home to try your luck at becoming parents again.
Daydreams of Henry’s future proposal tickled your insides and had you smiling as you turned street corners. Even the rotten news from Henry’s latest encounter with his soon-to-be ex-wife fell away, and you navigated the busy lanes without a care. A pleasant warmth filled your chest, reminding you of all the fond memories and good times with Henry to come.
Your love for him expanded day by day, with each minute at his side, and every breath you took. Why Mary tossed such an attentive man aside baffled you, but only enough to make you scoff to yourself and thank the higher powers for putting that same loving, selfless man in your path. Sure, your past wasn’t the most sterling love story, but it had room to grow into the relationship you’d always wanted.
Recalling Henry’s smile reflected on your face. His emotive looks and passionate eyes were always enchanting, even when he wasn’t in your presence. Sick with the intoxication of love, you sighed as you pulled into the visitor parking spot. Henry kept meaning to get you your own spot next to his, but extra work had taken away most of his free time.
You shouldered your purse, selected the fob from your ring of keys, and locked the car before sauntering toward the door leading to the parking lot stairwell. Up those stairs was the elevator, but you didn’t get that far before somebody cleared their throat from behind.
Whipping around, you noticed a woman standing near a Lexus. She wore a burgundy business suit with a knee-length pencil skirt that hung loosely about her thighs. Her hair twisted into a bun on top of her head, thin-framed glasses perched on her nose. The woman looked familiar to you, but in the dimly lit parking garage, it took you a few steps forward to realize who meant to grab your attention.
It was Mary.
“Uh, hi?” You said.
“Hello, Missy.”
You sneered at the address but soon dropped your sour expression. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to deliver you some bad news.”
“Henry isn’t here—”
“No, not Henry,” she interjected. “You.”
“Me? What do you want to speak to me for?”
Mary smirked, taking two steps away from her vehicle. You clutched your bag and drew your shoulders back. The woman posed no physical threat, but something about her was worrisome. Your only knowledge of her temperament stemmed from two encounters—both leaving an unflattering impression. Would she come after you? Did she have it in her to shed all professionalism and launch into a physical assault?
“There’s something I think you should know about Henry.”
You looked around the parking garage. Soon, cars would pull in, tired people walking by to reach the elevator. Mary had lived there at one point. Surely she wouldn’t try to hurt you when she knew about the surveillance cameras planted around the lot.
“I don’t understand. How did you know I’d be here?” You asked.
Mary chuckled. “Well, it’s the last Friday of the month, and Henry always has his board meeting at 4:30. He and all those stuck-up codgers never get out of the office until they’ve spent twenty minutes talking business and two hours discussing the prostitutes they took to this place and that, their golfing tournaments, their second and third wives. Trust me, sweetheart. I’ve been in your position before. I know Henry and his associates front-to-back. Which is why I’m warning you.”
A sinkhole opened in your gut, swallowing all the warmth and happiness you were feeling throughout the day. You scraped your thighs together, feeling flakes of semen come off from the motion. If only Mary knew her husband’s cum had been dripping from your slit since lunchtime. This secret fact made you smirk for a moment until you read the seriousness lining her forehead and framing her mouth.
“Well?” You encouraged with an air of impatience. “Out with it then.”
Not one to take orders, Mary clicked her tongue and shook her head. She longed to watch the disappointment on your face as she trampled upon your joy, so she prolonged the silence until you grew visibly perturbed.
“I assume Henry told you about what happened when he paid me a visit the other day?”
“Of course, he did. I’m helping him handle the case.”
Mary tilted her head with an audacious smile. “Yes. That comes as no surprise. He’d never clean up after himself. Henry always needed a woman to do it for him.”
You made a disgusted face, adjusting your purse strap and rolling your eyes. Mary carried on as a sleek black Audi pulled into the parking garage, missing you both by inches.
“He must have made you all kinds of promises when he got home, am I right?”
“Why does it matter?”
“Because that’s what he does after he’s fucked up. Let me tell you something... After he jumped in the sack with you, he came home to me and promised to be a better husband. He told me he’d go to counselling, take me on a second honeymoon, buy me whatever I wanted. All because he felt guilty. I’m willing to bet he came home that day and made similar promises to you. Maybe even told you he plans to marry you after all is said and done.”
Your mouth trembled, and you were thankful for the dimness. You wanted to tell Mary off, but she had your curiosity hooked.
“How do you know that?” You whispered.
“I already told you. I know Henry better than anyone. Better than you ever will. We were married for over fifteen years, remember?”
There wasn’t enough air entering your lungs, so you opened your mouth and took in a deep breath.
“I wanted to test him. I had to see whether he really loved you or if he was just using you to fill the void. It turns out he has genuine feelings for you, but not enough to keep him from fucking me.”
“What?” You gasped.
“That’s right,” Mary said, smirking. “I told Henry if he took me then and there, right in the kitchen, I’d call off the renegotiation and let him have what he wanted—the clean break he needed to continue with his happy, albeit staged, little happy life. He took the bait immediately.”
“No, he did not!” You exclaimed.
Mary chuckled, taking another step toward you. “You idiot. He cheated on me. Do you honestly believe he wouldn’t do the same to you? That man was raised in one of the worst misogynistic environments I’ve ever witnessed. Look at the men he calls friends! Sure, they all have their trophy wives, but when they go away on business, it’s blowjobs in the back of strip clubs, hookers at 3 AM and sushi on naked women. Have you never listened in on one of their meetings?”
“I’d never. I trust Henry,” you said, voice quivering.
“You’re a dolt to trust him or anyone he associates with. Henry is a pervert. A useless, sterile sack of shit. Why do you think I turned away? I was sick of getting cheated on.”
“Sterile?” You repeated.
Mary cocked her head, then opened her mouth to gasp softly. “That’s right. Henry and I never conceived because he can’t have children.”
Your hands shook, and every breath you took shuddered in your chest. “That can’t be true. He would have told me.”
The woman six feet away from you shook her head with remorse. She allowed an excruciating silence to pass before sighing. Something changed about Mary’s face. One moment she looked smug and eager to rile you up, and the next, she looked calm, distant... Almost sad.
“There was a time when I truly loved Henry. When any time I thought of my future, I saw us together with several kids. And we tried, we really did. For months and months, we tried getting pregnant. Finally, we went to a fertility clinic, but Henry had his qualms. He insisted it was all chance; that if we kept at it, eventually we’d conceive. We got tested, but the results take time. Well, Henry went to Thailand with Frank and some other colleagues—and trust me, you do not want to hear the stories that came back with them—leaving me alone at home, fretting. But that didn’t matter. I was used to it.
“Anyway, while he was off living it up in paradise, I got the results back. The doctor said I was fine, but Henry... Well, I just couldn’t tell him. I knew it would crush his spirit. Something like that would destroy his will to live, and I couldn’t bring that down on him while he was hitting the peak of his career. He was raking in raises and promotions, and I was on my own path. So, I swallowed the devastating news and saved him the heartbreak because I loved him and wanted what was best. But as time went on, my life and our marriage lost meaning. I couldn’t look at Henry the same. I couldn’t sleep with him because I knew he’d try to get me pregnant, and there was only so much stress I could handle. Sex is meant for procreation, and we would never rise to the task.”
The air in the parking garage grew chilly. More and more vehicles filed in, filling the atmosphere with dizzying fumes. Overhead, the lights flickered as nausea worked into your gut. You began to sweat and shiver at the same time.
“No. I don’t believe you. Who would ever do something so cruel? You’re just saying this so I’ll leave. You don’t love him. What kind of wife would keep a secret like that?”
“A wife who only wanted to see her husband become the best person he could be, which, evidently, still isn’t so great when you take into account all the terrible things he’s done to us.”
You shook your head and threw off your center of gravity. The heels of your shoes wobbled, or perhaps it was your knees knocking, you couldn’t tell. All you knew was you needed to sit down before you lost balance and toppled over. Mary saw this struggle and crossed her arms under her bosom.
“Like it or not, Missy, Henry isn’t the man you think he is. He’ll make all kinds of promises, but he’ll disappoint you in the end. Trust me.”

Code Olympus
Just an idea for a story. Takes much inspiration from the Webtoon Code Adam, drawn by Atterozen. (An interesting, and very relevant, piece of information is that, in real life, Code Adam is a protocol used to help locate and rescue missing children)
---
It all began when Athena fell in love with a scientist. He, like most of her other fare, was an intelligent blond man, with forest-green eyes, and a voracious need to know. He sought knowledge from all sources, often times going on benders across the internet or through libraries, looking for information on whatever topic he was studying at the time. Most of it focused on human biology, as that is what he researched, but occasionally, it was the oddest thing, such as the mating habits of goats.
They met in a small, niche cafe. Whenever she was feeling particularly restless, Athena would teleport herself to quiet little places like this, seeking conversation and companionship. Her attention was drawn to a man in a corner booth, reading a rather hefty book. A cup of coffee was in his hand, and a plate of pie was pushed off to the side, untouched and unnoticed. The man's lovely green eyes were flicking down the page at an incredible rate, and he was mumbling under his breath so fast, it was a miracle he could even breathe in. His dark-blond hair was shaved close to his scalp in a buzzcut. A white lab coat was slung over the backrest of his bench.
So involved was he in his reading, that he didn't even notice when Athena sat down across from him and ordered a cup of tea from the waitress. For a while, the goddess amused herself with watching the man, but by the time her tea was half-gone, she was feeling a bit impatient.
"Hello," Athena said, startling the man something horrible. He jolted so hard his knee slammed into the underside of the table, and he hissed. He glared at Athena. Now that he was looking up, she could see the dark bags under his eyes, as if he hardly slept.
"Can I help you?" he asked, deep voice rumbling in his chest. Up close, he was a rather physically imposing man. His jaw was square, facial features hard as stone. His shoulders were broad under his solid black button-up, the sleeves rolled back to unveil his thick forearms.
"Yes, perhaps you can," Athena mused demurely.  "You see, I am in desperate need of intelligent conversation, and I was hoping you might be able to provide."
His expression went from angry to flat. "Unfortunately, I am a bit busy at the moment," he said, tapping his book with a thick index finger. "So unless you can explain the intricacies of genetic coding, I'm going to have to ask you to try someone else."
"I happen to be quite knowledgeable about many things."
"Is that so?" he asked skeptically.
"It is. You may quiz me, if you feel it necessary."
The man took that as the invitation it was, and launched a slew of questions, all of which Athena answered without fail. Lacking regular duties to attend to, such as the attention her Father needed to pay to his domain of the sky, the Goddess of Wisdom found herself with quite a bit of free time, which she usually spent reading. As you can imagine, one can read a significant amount in three thousand or so years.
At some point, the man's lips had quirked upwards with a smile. He was enjoying this just as much as Athena. "Well, seems like you weren't joking. I'm Edward Bennett. It's nice to meet you, Miss...?"
"Astrid Graves," she replied, making up the name on the spot.  They shook hands over the table, and Edward glanced at his watch as he drew his hand back.
"Looks like my lunch break is over. I suppose I'll see you around, Miss Graves?"
"Here, tomorrow?"
"I can work with that."
---
Lunch breaks became dinner dates became nights spent together in a loving embrace (in Athena's mindscape, of course. She was still one of the three Virgin Goddesses). A few months later, they were in the place where it all started, when Athena dropped the bomb on Edward.
"I'm pregnant."
Edward blinked. "Is that so?"
"Yes."
"...Huh."
His lack of reaction was a bit worrying. "Is that... Bad?" she asked nervously, a far cry from the immortal warrior she actually was.
The corner of his lip twisted downward. "Hard to say. I'm not really fit to be a father, and I can't afford to cut back on my time in the lab, or I'll lose out on... A good 90% of my grants. Sorry, Astrid, but until I can stabilize my position, you'll have to take care of the kid mostly on your own for now."
Athena nibbled on her lip, wondering how best to break the news to him. Edward was a sharp man, though, and quickly picked up on her unease.
"Not gonna work, huh?" he asked, taking a sip of his coffee. He sighed. "Well, we can always hire a nanny or something. Unless you have family who'd be willing to help out a bit?"
Athena shook her head. "That's not the problem. I... Once the child is delivered, I will be forced to leave."
Edward raised a brow. "Forced? You're a grown woman, Astrid. Your parents can't legally make you do anything. They can't tell you not to have a child." It was a bit baffling to him, that such an independent woman was worried about something like this.
"That's not it." She breathed in deeply. "I won't be able to stay, because of the Ancient Laws."
Edward's confusion became more profound. "Ancient? What, like from the Paleozoic Era? he asked with a little chuckle. "C'mon, I've never heard of any law that says a woman has to leave just because she had a child out of wedlock. If you're that worried about it, then let's get married. Doesn't have to be a big ceremony- we can just hold a little celebration down at one of those halls, invite a few people, and call it a night."
Athena sighed. It was never easy to admit that she wasn't mortal to her lovers, because it marked the beginning of the end of their relationship. She'd found, over the years, that the best way to do it was to just rip the bandage off. "We can't get married, either, because I am a goddess."
Edward stared at Athena for a long, silent moment, before he blinked. "Is this- listen, Astrid, it's fine if you're one of those LARPers, or whatever, but if you're gonna do it, at least don't joke about being pregnant." He sounded a bit annoyed, and Athena frowned. The Goddess of Wisdom looked him straight in the eye and, using her divine powers, instilled the fact that what she was saying was the truth directly into his mind. Edward's head jerked back, shocked by the sudden intrusion, before he rubbed his temples. "Oh. Okay. Wow."
"Wow, indeed. As the Greek Goddess Athena, the Ancient Laws dictate that I, and the other gods, cannot stay with mortals for long periods of time, and we cannot, under any circumstances, interfere in the lives of our demigod children. The Heroes must be left to grow on their own."
"And, all these other Olympian gods, they just, what- go around, hooking up with people, and then leaving them with the children?"
"Not all. Artemis and Hestia have sworn to remain virgins, while Hera will never couple with a mortal. My Father, Zeus, and his brothers, Poseidon and Hades, have also sworn to no longer have demigod children."
Edward stared at her wide-eyed, astounded that she could possibly say something so insane with a straight face. "So, that's it? Here's a kid, have fun? I legitimately cannot take care of a child right now. Are you sure you can't stay for at least a few years, at least until I can get a stable job?"
Athena deflated. "I'm afraid I cannot. Should I linger more than a few days after the child's birth, the consequences will be most severe. Since I am a goddess, they will fall directly on our child."
Edward's gaze was boring a hole into the table. "Fine. Whatever. When's the kid due?"
"Next week. Pregnancy for a goddess is much quicker than a mortal woman." She also refrained from mentioning that the child would be popping out of her head. That was just a bit too much for the poor man.
Edward's glare hardened. "That's barely any time at all," he seethed, "What am I supposed to do about my job?"
"You're a smart man. I'm sure you'll figure something out," Athena said encouragingly. Unfortunately for her, it sounded rather patronizing to the man.
"Right," Edward hissed, standing abruptly. He pulled out his wallet and slapped a few bills on the table, barely bothering to count the amount. "I need time to think." With that, the man stormed out the cafe, leaving the pensive goddess to her own thoughts.
---
This is impossible. I need this job- I don't have time to take care of a friggin' kid! Crazy damned woman. How many other guys has she trapped like this? How many other people have the rest of her family trapped? So many people, raising a kid they can't take care of, just because some god or goddess wanted to mess around with one of us puny mortals. What a fucking mess...
Wait.
That bastard, Martin, said that as long as you can show something worthwhile, it doesn't matter how long you're in the lab. And, if you manage to start a project that generates enough interest from the higher-ups, you can pretty much retire and live off the royalties, even if you're a beginner. Would explain why I haven't seen him around since he invented a goddamn element.
How worthwhile would a demigod be?

i’m bored : auston matthews
song(s): break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored - ariana grande ; in my head - ariana grande
word count: 2,082 (man i need to shut up)
warning(s): drinking, some swearing.
a/n: this is the first thing i’ve written in a long time due to feeling unmotivated/uninspired. hope you like it :)
 how dare he?
it had been exactly a month and a half since you and auston had decided to call off your unofficial relationship, and had the nerve to show up to your nightclub with his new girlfriend. and, of course, she was pretty, she looked exactly like you in every way, down to her outfit. she was basically another version of you; a clone, if you will.
auston had decided since he couldn’t have you, he’d just get a copy of you. which, in his head, seemed like a good idea at first. that was up until he stared at you from across the club, with your date. his heartbeat suddenly sped up as he made eye contact from the dance floor while you sat with your date at the couch.
taking a sip of your drink, you continued to ignore the boy you showed up with (who was currently talking your ear off) and kept your eye on auston, watching as the girl he brought continued to dance on him with her backside pressed up against his crotch.
after feeling a slight, cold tap on your left thigh, you turned back to your date, miles. “you alright?” he asked, his subtle british accent making an appearance.
you nodded, shifting all your attention to him. “i’m fine. what were you saying?” you asked before reaching out your hand to hold his own; showing the first bit of attention tonight.
he cleared his throat, “i was just sayin’ how i wasn’t expectin’ you to ask me out. especially not tonight since it was so last minute. not that i’m complaining, of course. just a bit of a surprise is all.”
‘he’s a talker,’ you mentally noted.
“granted,” miles continued on, “i should’ve verbally talked to you instead of writing my number on your cup. but that was two weeks ago and you hadn’t even texted me until today, i was for sure you weren’t interested. but i see that i was wrong.” he squeezed your hand, earning a smile from you.
sure, he was nice. but he wasn’t auston. merely just a temporary distraction.
“are you having a good time?” you asked, shooting a quick glance in auston’s direction and almost immediately regretting it.
“i’d be having a better time if we danced,” he stood up, dusting off his pants and offering his right hand for you to take.
smiling, you stood up and accepted his invitation. you looked towards the crowd of people and noticed the girl auston showed up with had left him alone on the dance floor while she went to the bar for drinks.
seeing this as an opportunity, you turned to miles. “on second thought,” you started, “why don’t we get some drinks first?”
miles furrowed his brows, “we already had drinks; i didn’t even finish mine.” he motioned to his half-full glass that sat on the table.
“exactly! your drink was gross so i’m gonna get you a better one,” you stated, quickly coming up with an excuse to meet this girl at the bar. miles was confused but decided not to fight it. he instead sat back down in his original spot as you walked away to the bar.
auston watched as you approached, thinking you had got up to talk to him. so, to say the least, he was surprised when you only looked at him for half a second before walking right past him; not even taking a second out of your day to talk to him.
finally arriving at the bar, you took the only seat available next to auston’s new girlfriend.
‘well now i’m here,’ you thought, ‘but, what do i say?’
you cleared your throat, loudly, hoping it would get her attention. but, alas, she kept her head down as she continued scrolling on her phone. after tossing your hair behind your shoulder, the little bit of light in the club reflected off of your diamond-studded choker. setting your right elbow on the counter, you “accidentally” bumped yours into hers.
“sorry!” you apologized quickly.
she smiled, “it’s fine,” and turned to look back at her phone before looking back up at you. “your choker is really nice,” she complimented, “i have one just like it.”
“i bet,” you replied, not exactly paying attention to what you were saying.
“what do you mean?” she asked.
“oh, just because the choker is nice and you look like you have nice style.” you managed to lie.
it was almost as if you were looking at a watered-down version of yourself. yeah, she was pretty, extremely pretty, but she wasn't you.
she smiled again. "thanks. i'm astrid."
"(y/n)," you simply replied. slapping your hand down on the bar a few times, you got the attention of the somewhat busy bartender. he turned around almost immediately and tossed the towelette on his shoulder once he realized it was you. "hey (y/n), you want your usual appletini?"
astrid was amazed. she had spent fifteen minutes trying to order drinks and all you had to do was slap the counter a few times." and one whiskey sour, please." you added politely.
carter, the bartender, started working on the drinks right away, causing astrid to turn to you. "how were you able to just...do that?"
you shrugged as if it was no big deal. “i just have good connections with many of the people that work here, nothin’ special.”
astrid scoffed, “i’ve been trying to get some drinks for the past ten minutes and i can’t even get the bartender to look at me.”
“seriously?” you tried to sound shocked. “hey, carter, my friend astrid here wants to order some drinks,” you said to carter, easily grabbing his attention.
astrid ordered her two drinks before thanking you for being so kind. “you ordered two drinks so i’m assuming you’re here with someone?” you rested your chin in the palm of your hand, keeping eye contact with astrid.
she nodded, “i’m here with my boyfriend, auston,” she turned in her seat to face the crowd of people and you did the same, “right there.” she pointed to him, but he stuck out like a sore thumb, being the only person standing in a crowd of people that were dancing. he looked at you straight away, already knowing what you were up to and being extremely nervous about it.
you squinted, trying to seem shocked for the second time this night. “is that...auston matthews?” you asked.
“mm-hm,” astrid spun back in her seat after hearing he first drink being placed on the bar, “are you a hockey fan?”
“i prefer the caps, but, auston and i used to be friends. as crazy as that may sound.” you grabbed your drink without completely turning around, making sure auston knew you were talking about him.
“oh, that’s so cool! i guess it really is a small world. but, yeah, my birthday is in a few weeks and i was looking for a place i can throw a party. auston recommended we look here so...here we are.” astrid took a sip of her drink and started to pull out her wallet to pay.
you finally turned back around, placing your hand on her’s. “don’t worry about it, i’ll pay.” you smiled sweetly before getting your wallet out of your clutch. “wow, thank you!” astrid spoke.
“don’t mention it,” you put three ten-dollar bills on the bar, “but, if you’re thinking of throwing a party here, you need the full experience. like, the vip section.”
“that sounds nice, but, there’s no way i could get in so last minute,” she admitted.
you scoffed, “that’s silly, i can get us in no problem. here,” you stood up, “grab our drinks and follow me.” she quickly grabbed all four glasses before following you to the vip section. the sight of her trailing behind you as you carelessly walked to the vip section empty-handed was a sight you wished you could see. but, as long as auston was watching, it doesn’t really matter.
pushing past the line of people, you walked up to the security guards who stood in front of a velvet rope. “(y/n),” one of the guards smiled as you approached, “wasn’t expecting you to show up tonight.”
“i’m full of surprises, tony.” you peered over his shoulder, seeing the section was empty. “i see no one is in there, is it cool if me and a few friends stay in there?”
“anything for my favorite cousin,” tony smiled before pulling back the velvet rope and allowing you and astrid to walk in.
“oh. my. god.” she put down all four drinks on the mini table before sitting down on one of the couches. “i...you...how...how? first the drinks and now this?” she was amazed.
“all about connections.” you sat down across from her.
“oh, shit. i completely forgot he’s the whole reason i’m here in the first place. hold on, i’ll go get him.” she stood.
“no,” you stood, “let me, i have to go get my date as well.” you left before she gave any room for pushback. you walked through the crowd of people, looking for auston but not seeing him anywhere. that’s when you felt a hand grabbed your arm and turned you around to face them.
looking up at the person as seeing it was auston, you snatched your arm away from him. “don’t touch me,” you grimaced.
“what the hell do you think you’re doing?” he asked, obviously annoyed.
“i’m not doing anything except for being nice to a friend i just met,” you replied innocently, adding a smile. “a friend that looks just like me if i might add.”
he was quiet for a moment, only staring at you. “are you being serious right now?”
“being serious about what?” your whole deminer changed. this time, you were completely annoyed. “you decide you can’t have me so you get a clone and expect me to not be upset about it.”
auston shook his head, smirking. “she doesn’t even look that much like you and if she does, so what? is it my fault that t i have a type?”
“i’m the reason why you have a type, auston. because of me, you like girls who look like me but won’t stress you out, and for what? so you won’t have to put in that much effort?” you questioned, standing your ground.
auston was quiet, but, he was listening.
“and, look at you. before we dated you had no sense of style whatsoever, all that money just a throw a bunch of random shit together and call it a look. then i came along and helped you finally put together an outfit. i practically invented you,” you continued.
auston chuckled as he listened to your rant.
“then, you have the nerve to bring her to my club.” you crossed your arms.
“your club?” he questioned while laughing, “i’m the reason why we even found this place.”
“and i’m the reason why we always got in for free and how we were basically treated like royalty. i bet you still used my name to get in, didn’t you?” you asked, noticing how he refused to look at you. “exactly,” you shook your head.
sighing again, you looked down at your shoes, “and it sucks that after all this, i still manage to miss you.”
auston finally looked at you, “what?”
“nothing,” you replied, “astrid is waiting for you in vip; i told her i’d come get you.”
“i have to pee,” he said before leaving to go to the bathroom.
after returning back to miles, you explained all that happened in the past ten minutes and brought him to meet astrid. a few minutes later, auston returned from the washroom, giving astrid a kiss on the cheek before he sat which caused you to roll your eyes. moments later, your phone vibrated against your thigh, indicating you had a new text.
auston: Can u stop acting like a fucking brat
smirking, you looked up at auston only to realize miles wasn’t even sitting next to you anymore. instead, he sat next to astrid as she showed him pictures on her phone.
you: dont they make such a cute couple??
“hey, (y/n),” astrid called you, “my party isn’t until a few weeks, but, i’d really love it if you and miles could make it.”
you smiled, “i wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Say The Word And We'll Find A Way
Hiccup frowned as the train left without him, leaving him stranded in the heart of the city. He hated his boss for giving him all the paperwork for the case against some psycho called “Daggur the Deranged”. He’d seen some of the guys work on the news, needless to say, he earned his name.
Sighing, he whipped out his phone. 5 missed calls from Heather. Great, Hiccup thought as he sat on the bench. The last thing he needed was his harpy of a girlfriend going off at him. But his parents liked her, at least his dad did anyway. Then again, he didn’t know the truth.
Of course Hiccup had looked for every way out he could. Heather was many horrible things, but she was definitely smart. All he’d heard as he left for the firm that morning was how lonely his “poor girlfriend” would be without him, especially considering she had his son with her.
He hated her using his son as a bargaining chip for control. To drag an innocent 3 year old into her manipulative world was more than enough for him to want to leave her.
But he had nothing to play against her. She definitely was discrete in her ways and he had no real way of proving she was an unfit parent. Her acting skills were just too good. But he knew she’d slip up one day  and until that day, he was staying.
And at the first chance he could, he was taking custody of his son and getting the Hell out of there. He was staying with her for Tyler’s sake. He didn’t want his son to have to go through the emotional turmoil of a custody battle. No child of his, or any child really, would be safe with Heather. If only the courts would believe it.
He’d been so wrapped up in his thoughts, he’d hardly noticed the woman joining him on the bench. Tan, long blonde hair and spring green eyes. Eyes that, now that he thought about it, seemed very familiar.
“Riley?” He let the name escape before he could think about it.
The blonde turned, looking confused before breaking out into a grin.
“Hiccup! Oh my God! It’s been so long!” She was as perky as he remembered.
“8 years, if you want to be precise.” He half-heartedly joked, given he’d been counting the days after he’d met Heather. Riley laughed and Hiccup felt his mood lift at the sound.
“Well, look at you, when did you grow?” She smirked, Hiccup joining her in their recollection of his former self.
“After you moved, Dad signed me up for Hockey. Arguably he last bit of proof to show he knew nothing about me.”
“I’m guessing you didn’t like it?” Riley asked with a ridiculously raised brow, drawing a chuckle from Hiccup.
“Hate it. But I met my friend Jack, he got me into the gym more often.”
“Well you’re not the only one who’s changed! I’m finally a social worker!” Riley twirled, allowing him to take in her floral dress underneath a lilac jacket.
“Wow. Lucky kids for having the Amazing Mrs. Corona rescue them.”
“Miss Corona. I’m afraid moving to Arendale, the ‘kingdom’ of California didn’t do much for me romantically. But I did get my degree and managed to meet my dads side of the family.” Riley beamed before pulling out her phone.
“Hey, you’ve gotta give me your number. I won’t take no for an answer. I missed my best friend all those years.”
Hiccup smiled and pulled out his phone, grimacing at the screensaver. Heather and him, when they’d only just met and he thought she was perfect.
“Actually Punz, I can’t really do that. My girlfriend’s ridiculously jealous.” Riley frowned seeing Hiccups demeanor change.
“Well, you don’t seem very enthusiastic about having a girlfriend. This coming from the girl who listened to you go on and on about how 'perfect’ Astrid Hofferson was from middle to high school.”
Hiccup chuckled at the mention of Astrid, they were great friends now. He’d practically forgotten he’d ever had a crush on her.
“Well, she’s just… not been herself since Tyler was born.”
   Riley gasped, Hiccup was married?
“You’re… You have a… Oh my gosh Hiccup, Congratulations!” She smiled.
“Yeah, thanks.” Hiccup frowned, putting his phone away. Deciding to cheer her friend up, Riley grabbed Hiccups hand and pulled him up. “What’re you doing?”
“Helping my friend feel better. Now you and I are gonna go get some coffee and you’re gonna tell me everything.”       They went to a small café and say down, Riley apparently knew the place and ordered for them.
“Now, please Hiccup, talk to me. You look stressed and anxious. Let me in.” Riley sighed, noticing her friend’s eyes were downcast.
“I’m stuck with her. Heather’s got me tied down like a dog. She checks my phone, she calls me constantly and she acts like she loves me when I know she’s only after my money. I made the biggest mistake of my life talking to her that first time, let alone asking her out.”
Hiccup ran a hand through his hair, continuing. “And then she got pregnant even though we were completely safe the one time we slept together. My dad seems bent on me marrying her when all I really wanna do is take Tyler and leave. You should see her Riley, she doesn’t care that shes a mother. I’ve had to stop her from smoking in front of Tyler a billion times!”       Riley frowned, taking in all the information her friend just revealed to her. She hated seeing him like this, especially since she loved him. Yes, loved him loved him. It’d been the move that made her realize how important he was to her.
And after hearing him recount the details of the past 8 years to her, she knew she had to do something. An idea began to form in her mind and she followed it. She just needed to call someone first. She remembered Hiccup saying how horrible Heather was to Tyler. If she could just get her angry enough, she could help Hiccup get full custody of Tyler. Breaking off his and Heathers relationship is just a bonus, she told herself.       She turned to Hiccup, rummaging through her purse. She silently prayed her friend would pick up.
“Um, Hiccup, can I borrow your phone real quick, I have to call an associate about a case.”
Hiccup frowned before conceding and handing the phone over.
“Thanks.” Riley offered, quickly calling her friend Merida.
“Hello?” came the voice of her Scottish friend and coworker from the other end of the line.
“Hey Mer, I was wondering about that case. If the husband had a recording of his wife saying she didn’t want custody, could he use it against her?”
“Um, I dunno what case 'ur goin’ off about, but ya, it’d work.” Riley silently thanked God and was practically jumping up and down. Her plan would work!
   “Thanks Mer! See you Monday!”
“Always happy to help Punz.” Riley gave Hiccup his phone back, noticing his suspicious look.
“Punz, are you up to something?” Hiccup asked, noticing the blonde’s strange expression.
“No. So Hiccup, can I meet Tyler? He sounds wonderful!” Riley noticed how Hiccup’s smile grew at the mention of his son.      “I don’t know, Heather can be…” Hiccup began, remembering how Heather had slowly cut him off from any other women, despite her not liking him.
“I’m sure she won’t mind me. I’ll be in and out.” Riley smiled as Hiccup put up his hands in surrender.
“Okay, be prepared to meet Evil Incarnate.”       Riley hadn’t known what she suspected to see when they came to Hiccups apartment building. It wasn’t particularly nice, what with a lawyers pay, she’s imagine Hiccup could afford more.
“I refuse to buy a house with her.” He offered as they rode the elevator up to his floor.
They came to the door and Hiccup flipped through his keys, looking for the one to his house. He sighed, finally finding the right one.
Only for the door to open wide and for a 4 year old to tackle Hiccups leg.
“Daddy! You’re home!” The boy sounded so happy it almost made Riley scared, what little boy was so desperate to avoid his mother? What mother could Heather be to lead her son to avoid her?
She got her answer as a mockingly sweet voice addressed Hiccup, a bottle clinking as she turned to the speaker.
“Well, look who finally decided to show up! Looks like your not good for nothing after all.” The brunette said, sipping from the bottle Riley identified as white wine. And it was almost completely empty.
“Heather, not in front of Tyler.” Hiccup quietly asked, looking down at his son.
“Fine, you take him inside while I have a discussion with the dumb blonde you decided to invite to our house.” Riley grimaced as Hiccup picked Tyler up and closed the door, leaving her with the woman who made his life Hell.       Heather was pretty, at least she would’ve been if she hadn’t been drinking, her black hair missed and her green eyes glazed over. Her skinny body was wrapped in a black cocktail dress and Riley could tell she hadn’t started her evening with the white wine.
“So, did the idiot take a mistress?” The woman smirked, sipping her bottle and silently sizing up her opponent.
Riley frowned, holding onto her phone hidden in her purse. She pressed the button, knowing what she had to do.
“You’re horrible, you know that. I’m not Hiccups mistress. I’m his friend. And he told me all about how you use Tyler against him. What kind of mother uses her child as leverage?”
Heather smirked, chuckling slightly. Riley didn’t trust the look, it was too devious, there was malice behind it.
“The kind of mother that’s gonna marry that idiot and be rolling in it. I have to say, nine months and labor was a lot of work, but it certainly made him stay with me.”
Riley couldn’t believe her ears, she knew Heather was bad, but that sort of activity was borderline psychotic.
“You got pregnant just to keep Hiccup around?” She could hardly believe her own words.
“Of course, and he was so perfect, doing the 'honorable thing’ and supporting me. His parents are so excited and his dad’s pushing for us to get married. I’m sure he’ll crack once I pop out another kid. I’ll just get him drunk enough, maybe slip into something pretty and make him think he’s protected. Only it won’t work. Just like last time. And once I’ve got a ring on my finger, I’ll be free to live the easy life.”
Riley felt her anger rise as she spoke, her emotions for Hiccup emboldening her. He deserved so much more than Heather.
“You’re the worst person I’ve ever met. Tyler and Hiccup deserve so much more than you. Some snobby gold-digger who’s uglier than a pit-bull!”
Heather's  green eyes lit up with anger, her throwing down her bottle.
“You know what bitch?! I could care less about either of them. The kids a headache and the man’s a nerdy idiot! I can’t believe I even let him get me pregnant! Thank God I was drunk otherwise I might’ve vomited.”
Riley wanted to rip Heathers head off but she had what she needed. She held the ace and she’d win the game Heather was playing.
“You know what Heather. I’m done with you. Now I’m gonna go inside, say goodbye to Hiccup and Tyler and leave.”
“Be my guest. Hope you break something on your way home Blondie.” Heather smirked triumphantly, thinking she won.
Riley walked into the apartment, hearing Tyler’s voice from down the hall. She walked to the bedroom, stopping upon hearing the conversation.       “Daddy, why do you stay with Mommy? She’s a meanie and she says bad words. She even gave my dragon a boo-boo.”
Hiccup looked at the plush Night Fury he’d given Tyler for his birthday. The left tail fin was ripped. He knew how much the toy meant to his son and quickly set to work making his son feel better.
“Tyler, Night Furies don’t get boo-boo’s. They’re the biggest, strongest dragons ever and they’re not afraid of anyone.”
“Anyone?” Tyler asked, his voice full of awe.
“Anyone.” Hiccup nodded, taking the stuffed toy and fiddling with the cloth, covering the hole so no stuffing would escape.
“Do you remember the day I got him for you? The carnival we went to for your birthday, just you and me? You know why I bought Toothless for you, Tyler?”
“You said he’d keep the monsters away.” The 4 year old nodded, leaning into his father’s embrace.
“Exactly. And he can’t be stopped by a measly little boo-boo. He’s a Night Fury. He’s your Night Fury. And he’ll protect you forever. Just like me.” Hiccup concluded, ruffling his son’s hair.
“Thanks Daddy. I love you.” The boy yawned, slowly closing his eyes.      “Love you too Bud. Now get some sleep.”
“Okay.” The boy nodded before laying down. Only to sit up again as Hiccup got up.      “Who’s that pretty lady talking to Mommy? She looked like an angel. And she was super nice. Is she gonna come around often. I like her. She’s nice. She’s not mean like Mommy. Can she visit?” The 4 year old asked.
“That’s Riley. She’s a friend of mine. And maybe Buddy.” Hiccup frowned, hoping his son wouldn’t get too attached to his friend. Tyler couldn’t have his heart broken. Besides, why would Riley even show any interest in Hiccup, he was a soon to be single dad with a son to support. His son interrupted his thoughts.
“She looks like a Mommy. Like a real Mommy. Is she someone else’s Mommy?”
“Tyler, she’s my friend but that doesn’t give you any permission to ask a million questions.” Hiccup sighed, trying to get back to Heather so he could say bye to Riley.      “I’m sorry Daddy. I was just wondering if…” The toddler stopped, looking down at Toothless.
“If what Buddy?” Hiccup asked, getting to eye level with his son.
“… If she could be my Mommy.” Tyler finished.       Hiccup frowned, looking at his son. The 4 year old fiddled with his hands, looking like he admitted to murder. Hiccup frowned, realizing his son had already become attached.
“But you have a Mommy, Tyler.” Hiccup offered, trying to diffuse the situation.
“She’s not a Mommy. A Mommy is nice and sweet and cares about you. A Mommy loves you and doesn’t say bad words to you. Riwey looks like a real Mommy and I like her.” Tyler frowned as he finished.
Hiccup couldn’t blame his son. Riley captured anyone she met. Including him. He’d loved her when he was younger. As in, he’d been in love with her. Them meeting again only enforced that he still was.
“I like her too Bud.” Hiccup admitted, noticing his son seemed to think before smiling.
“Then why doesn’t she become my Mommy?” The boy smiled like he’d discovered the cure for cancer, AIDS and world hunger all in one.
“I wish it was that simple Tyler. Things are… complicated. Adult stuff, that you don’t need to worry about now. You’ll understand when you’re older. Now get some sleep.” He got up, approaching the door.
“Okay Daddy. I love you.” The toddler quietly said, already dozing off again.
“Love you too Bud.” Hiccup sighed, closing the door.
He turned, only to see Riley looking at him. He felt his face light up and he stammered to catch his words.
   “You… Tell me you didn’t…”
She nodded, her cheeks aflame. Hiccup gulped.
“Hiccup. I like you too.” Riley offered, reaching into her purse.
She took out her phone, handing it to him like it was invaluable to his life.
“Here. Give me your number. I’ve got evidence that will make sure the judge doesn’t give Heather any custody over Tyler.” She answered his silent question.
Hiccup stared at the phone, half-convinced he was dreaming. Riley pushed the button and Heathers voice came from the speakers: You know what bitch?! I could care less about either of them. The kids a headache and the man’s a nerdy idiot! I can’t believe I even let him get me pregnant! Thank God I was drunk otherwise I might’ve vomited.
Hiccup had to suppress a smile as he lifted Riley off the ground and twirled her in the air.
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” He said with honest relief and happiness filling his voice.
He lowered her to the ground and kissed her, earning a gasp. He pulled away, cheeks red.
“I-I’m sorry. I-I was just really excited.” Riley smiled at him, taking his hand.
“Well, I like you when you’re excited. And I intend to see you like this more often.”
She pulled him down for another kiss. They pulled apart when a small body came between them, both looking down the the interrupting toddler.
“Daddy! You and her kissed!” The 4 year old whispered loudly, as if to keep it secret.
Riley smiled, getting to eye level with Tyler.
“Tyler, remember when you said you wanted me to be your Mommy?” She answer, smiling as the boy seemed so surprised at her knowing what he’d said.
The little boy nodded. “You heard that?”
“Yep. And I hope I can be your Mommy eventually. If you’ll have me.” Riley offered.
Tyler nearly leapt into her arms, his face buried in the crook of her neck.
“Yes! I’d love you as my Mommy!” The 4 yeas old admitted, almost catatonic with joy, much like his father.
“Okay Tyler, we’re leaving and we’re not coming back.” Hiccup smiled, wrapping an arm around the 2 people he cared for more than anything in the world.
“Really?” The boy asked, still clinging to Riley.
“Yeah. We’ll pack and leave and we won’t have to come back.” Hiccup smiled.
“No more meanie Mommy?” The boy asked, his smile disappearing for a second.
“No more meanie Mommy.” Hiccup nodded before going to their rooms. Tyler smiled and burrowed further into Riley’s arms. She was beginning to love the little boy and hoped she could become his real mother.
“Where are we going?” He asked politely.
Riley smiled. “We’re going to my house. And we’ll go out tomorrow and buy some paint and furniture for your new room.”
Tyler seemed to think for a second, his eyebrows scrunched in thought.
“Can it be green? I like green. And dragons.”
“Of course Tyler. Anything for you.” Riley smiled, noticing there was little to no decoration in Tyler’s room. Only essential furniture and some toys. She wondered if he even had enough for a suitcase. Tyler pulled her from her thoughts, shaking his head.
“I just want my Toothless, and my Mommy and Daddy.” The boy held his toy close, looking at its ripped fin.
“I can fix that for you.” Riley offered.
Tyler shook his head, a playful light in his electric green eyes as he held the damaged toy as if it were a priceless treasure.
“Toothless is a Night Fury. He’s not hurt by boo-boos. He’s-” Tyler was cut off by the front door slamming.       “What the Hell is going on in here? I come in and see Hiccup’s in our room, packing his bags and you’re here holding my kid?” Heather frowned, noticing Tyler turned away from her. “Come on Tommy. Come to Mommy.”
Riley frowned in disgust. “It’s Tyler. And your are no mother if the way you treat him is any indication of your feelings for him.”
Heather frowned. “Uh, last time I checked, I gave birth to him. So, yeah, I’m his Mommy.” She extended her arms and Tyler frowned.
“Mommy,” he looked up at Riley. “Keep her away! She’s a meanie!”
“Yeah, you’re a meanie.” Riley nodded, holding Tyler close. “And as God is my witness, you won’t hurt him or Hiccup again. Got it?”
Heather backed down, noticing the fierce light in Riley’s eyes.
What’s going on?“ Hiccup asked as he came in, bags in hand.
"Hiccup! You can’t leave me! I’ll just file for child support! I’ll get custody of Tyler and you’ll never see him again!” Heather threatened, desperate to keep what was hers.
Hiccup chuckled, wrapping an arm around Riley and Tyler. “Um, you can’t do that Heather. According to an audio recording, you 'could care less about either of us’. So, I’m definitely getting custody over Tyler and you’re not getting a dime.”
Heather gaped in response as Hiccup led Tyler and Riley to the door.
“Now, why don’t we go to Riley’s and set up some accommodations for ourselves, okay Tyler?”
Tyler nodded, smiling as he jumped to Hiccup’s arms. “Yay! We’re going to Mommy’s house!”
Hiccup stopped at the door, turning back to Heather. The woman who’d trapped him for 5 years, held him close, used him and his money, threatened him with his son, his most precious gift in life. He had no remorse as he spoke.       “You can keep the apartment. I never liked it anyway. See you in court.”
And with that, he turned and closed the door behind him. Tyler’s eyes were beginning to droop as he laid in Riley’s arms.
“You get some sleep Tyler.” Riley softly chided as the 4 year old rubbed his eyes.
“I’m not sleepy. I wanna stay up so Mommy can tell me a story.”
Riley took the boys hand, linking his pinkie in hers. “How about this Tyler? Tomorrow I’ll tell you two stories. And maybe we can make some hazelnut cookies?”
Tyler nodded, eyes closing. Hiccup smiled, opening the door to his car and setting Tyler in the car seat. Joining Riley at the front, he linked his free hand in hers as they drove off.
   “Thank you.” He offered.
“For what?” Riley asked, she’d only done a little to help.
“For setting us free.” Hiccup said, honest gratitude showing in his emerald eyes.
“It’s okay. I’d do anything for the ones I love.”
Hiccup turned, slightly smiling. “I’m not used to hearing that.”
“Well, get used to it. I’ll be reminding you every day.” Riley countered.
“Of course. Love you too.” Hiccup sighed, glad to have found the girl of his dreams and escape his nightmare of a girlfriend with his son, glad that Riley had found him.

Episode 8: Spheal the Deal!
Narrator: After their brush with Team SubZero, our heroes have recovered from the harrowing ordeal only to come to an abrupt realization.
“I never got to actually go inside the aquarium!” Astrid shrieked. Considering it was 10 in the morning, it wasn’t exactly a pleasant sound. The twins gave her the most annoyed look they were capable of. (Especially considering that they woke up late.) Janine thankfully, was spared from the sound since she was inside taking a video call.
“You didn’t realize?” Kaytlyn raised an eyebrow.
“No I didn’t!” She scowled.”I was caught up in that poacher stuff!”
“You tend to not notice a lot of things.” Kayla muttered. “There was the Double Contest thing last week… and now with the aquarium.”
“Shut up!” the teen huffed, “Why don’t you ever tease Janine about anything?”
Kayla thought for a moment before turning to her sister. “Should I?”
“Janine never really does anything tease-worthy-”
“Yes she does!” Astrid interjected. “First of all she’s a total weeb.”
“True.”
“She has scoliosis.”
“Also true.”
“She’s an emo.”
“Uh-huh.”
“She’s-“
“I’m what?”
Astrid let out a shriek, unaware that Janine had somehow snuck up on her. The trainer gave her an unimpressed look before continuing.
“I got a call from Adrian. He’s gonna be here in a few minutes and he wanted to make sure that we were still here so we could finally battle.” Janine explained.
“You do know that Adrian has a type advantage on you right?” Kayla pointed out. Janine shrugged.
“I’ll just do the same thing I did with Romeo back at the gym.”
“Uh, but what if Mudkip evolved?”
“What?”
Kayla gave her a concerned look before Astrid cut in, “Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp, complete with a Water/Ground-Typing. Fire has a quarter of its usual effectiveness, and Electric does absolutely nothing.”
“Well… that’s a problem.” The trainer stated, dumbfounded.
“Yeah. On the other hand it becomes double weak to Grass-Types.” Astrid said smugly, offering Kayla a hi-five since they both chose grass-type starters.
“Well. Time to spam Double-Kick.”
“You can’t just do that!” Kayla pointed out.
“Yes I can.”
“That’s the most basic and unoriginal strategy I’ve ever heard.”
“Bet. I’ll beat him.”
“I hate you.”
~*~*~*~*~
After a few minutes of waiting, Adrian and his friends had shown up at the entrance of the Pokemon Center. The group caught their attention with a series of shouts and joking cat-calls. (At least on Astrid’s end)
“Please shut up. You’re all so embarrassing.” Adrian pleaded, glancing around to other bystanders.
“You love us.” Astrid crowed, meaning to embarrass him further. She narrowly dodged an incoming slap and moved over to hug Sheyla and Andrea.
“How was Route 3?” Janine motioned to his ragged appearance.
“Other than the ungodly amount of Mightyena and Poochyena everywhere, it was great! I caught two Pokemon!”
“Woah! Two?” Kayla asked curiously. At Adrian’s nod, the teen beckoned Astrid over, hoping she would lend the Pokedex to her for a few minutes. Wordlessly, Adrian reached to two more Pokeballs hanging at his hip (Wow, how did they not notice those?). Each Pokemon popped out with their own unique cries.
“An Aron and Ralts?”
Astrid handed her Pokedex to Kayla and knelt down to poke at the Psychic-Type.
“Ralts, the Feeling Pokemon. Ralts senses the emotions of people using the horns on its head. This Pokémon rarely appears before people. But when it does, it draws closer if it senses that the person has a positive disposition.”
Kaytlyn snorted. “Well that makes absolutely no sense.”
“What do you mean?”
“Adrian, you are one of the most aggressive people I’ve ever met. Second to a rampaging Tauros.” She snickered. Adrian gave her a hard look before sighing.
“True.”
“Is there a particular story behind this?” Janine asked, remembering her Mareep.
“Not with Ralts. He just threw the Pokeball as soon as he beat him. Pretty standard.” Andrea shrugged, “But Aron? There’s a story behind that one.”
“Ralts is a he?” Kayla gave Ralts a onceover, not understanding how such a feminine Pokemon could possibly be male. “Remind me to introduce you to Astrid’s Vulpix.” she muttered.
“Sh! I want to hear the Aron story!” Kaytlyn threw leaves at her sister, acting over dramatic. Kayla gave her a wounded look and simply scanned Aron in response.
“Aron, the Iron-Armor Pokemon. This Pokémon has a body of steel. To make its body, Aron feeds on iron ore that it digs from mountains. Occasionally, it causes major trouble by eating bridges and rails.”
“Okay, so basically.” Sheyla began, “Adrian had already caught Ralts like the day before, and he was training up her Magical Leaf attack. And then out of nowhere the Aron comes out.
“Adrian’s like ‘Oh this is going to be great training experience!’ and he sends Ralts to battle. Andrea and I just sorta… move away because this is probably the eighth time he’s done this in the past hour or so. He’s insane.”
“I was training my Pokemon!”
“You couldn’t have waited until we got to a Pokemon Center? You’re the reason it took 3 days to get here! Whatever.” Sheyla waved him away and the boy sat down, no longer able to tell his own story, “Anyway. We were just talking about how stupid Adrian is, and then he starts screeching. Out of nowhere.”
“It was concerning.” Andrea added, giving the gay a disgusted look. Adrian narrowed his eyes in response.
“Mhm. Well. We go over and we’re like,
‘What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Is Ralts hurt?’ But no. Instead he starts yelling at us to give him his bag, and he won’t answer when we ask what’s going on. So we just fling his bag over and he’s all panicky, and he doesn’t even look and he throws a Pokeball at Aron. But it doesn’t work. Obviously. And Aron escapes and starts to run.”
“Yes, of course, I’d run too.” Astrid nods, unhelpfully. Janine scoffs.
“And instead of battling it again, like a logical human being, Adrian throws another Pokeball. Which doesn’t work. And he continues this maybe 4 more times before finally throwing a Great Ball.”
“Why on Arceus’s green Earth would you do that?” Janine turned to the boy in question.
“Aron has a Secret Ability!” Adrian said, showing them his Pokedex.
“Secret Ability?”
“You know how Pokemon have abilities?” Sheyla began. Janine nodded.
“Arroz has Static as her ability.”
“Arroz? Who the- Actually, nevermind. Anyway, Secret Abilities are just really rare abilities that a certain Pokemon species may have. For Aron species in particular, their secret ability is Heavy Metal, meaning they become heavier in battle. Most Pokemon have Hidden abilities that make it so that they have a better advantage in battle.”
“I heard about Hidden Abilities before in school, but I didn’t think we’d actually meet a Pokemon with one!” Astrid said in wonderment. Kayla had a similar look as they inspected Aron thoroughly.
“I wonder if any of our Pokemon have a Secret Ability.” Kaytlyn thought out loud.
“I wouldn’t even know the difference.” Janine admitted. She turned her attention back to Adrian, “So about that battle…” Adrian nodded in excitement and was about to set the terms before Astrid interrupted.
“Woah, woah, woah! I’d just like to remind you that I haven’t gone to the Aquarium yet!”
“Literally no one cares.” Adrian gave her a harrowing look. Astrid glared right back.
“You can wait. I’ve wanted to go to the Aquarium since the first day we got to this sandy purgatory! Listen. You two can battle after we visit the aquarium.” She turned to Kayla and Andrea and began to drag them along, “Before something ridiculous happens and Team SubZero decides to blow up a daycare or something.” Sheyla watched the coordinator drag her friends along before a thought struck her.
“Who’s Team SubZero?” Janine took a double-take.
“You haven’t encountered them yet?”
“It doesn’t really matter, they’re just a bunch of Pokemon stealing weirdos in parkas.” Kaytlyn said dismissively.
Adrian nodded sagely. “Like Team Rocket.”
They have him a look.“Who’s Team Rocket?”
“This group back in the 90s that- actually nevermind it doesn’t matter. Just follow them before they get themselves run over.”
~*~*~*~*~
Turns out saving Pokemon from being kidnapped comes with its perks. When they started to pay for their tickets, the lady at the ticket booth had told them ‘It was already taken care of’ and told them to pass right through.
Andrea eyed the ticket booth in suspicion.“Did you somehow join the mafia in the time we’ve been gone?”
“More like stopped the mafia.” Kayla corrected, “We got Team SubZero to back off yesterday, so I’m guessing this is their way of saying thank you.”
“You keep mentioning this Team SubZero.”
“Bruh. We met them the first day we started our journey!” Astrid began her over dramatized tale of rescuing the twins, much to their chagrin.
“You never finished that story back in Rocens, you know.”
“I was nervous for my contest.” She shrugged. Janine narrowed her eyes.
“So you mean to tell me that they never crossed paths with you guys once?”
“Nope!”
“We’ve crossed with them twice! And they’ve tried to kill us both times!” Astrid exclaimed. Kayla could only offer a long-withering sigh.
“Coincidence?”
She glared up at the sky just long enough to avoid permanent eye damage. “Arceus is playing some huge trick and is laughing his plates off right now.”
“Wait a minute! Backtrack!” Adrian paused in front of her, “What do you mean tried to kill you?”
“Uh. Kind of? The first time there was this Ciela woman who wanted to catch the twins and she took their Pokemon too.” Janine thought back.
Astrid giggled. “Then we destroyed her stupid machine.”
“Yeah, and then she wanted to freeze-dry us with her Froslass!”
“Don’t be stupid. Froslass can’t learn Freeze-Dry.” Kayla gave her a grin.
“You’re all surprisingly calm about facing a criminal organization.” Sheyla pointed out.
“Oh, it’s never calm. Every minute it feels like I’m about to either cry, punch someone, or a mix of both.” Kaytlyn grimaced, “It’s not fun.”
“Either we’re suppressing our trauma, or we’re sociopaths.” Kayla glanced at her phone, “At least according to Google.”
“Or you’re adrenaline junkies with hero complexes.” Sheyla suggested. Janine considered for a moment before agreeing dejectedly. Astrid let out a loud gasp and dragged Kayla through to a glow-in-the-dark display.
“Kayla! Check out these Tentacool!”
“I already saw them- Stop pulling on me!”
Kaytlyn heaved out a sigh before following her sister. “Sweet Arceus.”
The group slowly crept through the aquarium, stopping frequently to marvel at the different types of Water-Type Pokemon that called the aquarium their home. Janine had to admit that there were details she hadn’t noticed before when she was running around looking for culprits. The silence was broken every few moments when someone would crack a joke or had an interesting fact to share.
The teens followed each exhibits, until they had gone through the entire building, exiting in the courtyard. From there, it was of little argument where to go, as they all agreed that it would be most interesting to watch one of the upcoming shows.
Their curiosity led to a designated pool area that was surrounded by glass, likely to keep people from getting too close to the Pokemon. There were hardly any people sitting in the arena, maybe two or three adults and the rest were staff who were easily recognizable in yellow polos.
Next to the pool was a platform where a man in a wetsuit was standing with his arms crossed staring down at a group of round blue Pokemon.
Janine took out her Pokedex and scanned the Water-Types.
“Spheal, the Clap Pokemon. Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body. When the season for ice floes arrives, this Pokémon can be seen rolling about on ice and crossing the sea.”
“It’s so round…” Kayla looked at the Pokemon with wide eyes. The group of Spheal clapped enthusiastically, some rolling around dumbly. A single Spheal was the outlier of the group far away, and refusing to even get close. The Pokemon began to practice some sort of routine, each taking turns bouncing a beach ball to each other. In a word, it was one of the cutest displays they’d ever seen. Until it was the last one’s turn.
The Spheal smacked the ball back with more force than necessary, bonking one of the others in the face.
“Spheal, come on! Please cooperate for once!”  The trainer pleaded to no avail as the Spheal absolutely ignored him. “Spheal!”
“Woah, that Spheal really doesn’t want to listen to him.” Astrid whistled, pressing closer to the foggy glass. Kayla nodded.
“Maybe it doesn’t want to do their routine?” she suggested. The Spheal bounced closer to one of the others and promptly smacked it so hard that it rolled backwards into the water. “Or. Maybe it’s just mean.”
The man seemed to be at wits end as the Spheal bounced/rolled around causing chaos amongst the others.
“Spheal it’s not that hard! Bounce the ball!” The handler seemed to try a different approach, giving a nervous laugh as he gently tossed the ball in said Pokemon’s direction. The Spheal gave him an angry look at smacked the ball back again. The handler barely caught it. Spheal opened its mouth and began to form a ball of ice.
Sheyla recognized the move immediately. “That’s Ice Ball!” The handler seemed to notice and thankfully dodged the first time. However, he wasn’t so lucky the second time and was knocked backwards.
“Shouldn’t someone intervene?” Andrea looked around nervously and spotted some of the staff ignoring the scene in front of them, or maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal?
“Woah, let’s talk about this!” The handler scrambled backwards as another Ice Ball shot past his face.
“I think we should intervene!” Adrian said, prompting his friends to run to the glass door on the side that read ‘Employees Only’. The teens pushed their way past each other through the narrow door. Kaytlyn was the first to throw a Pokeball out.
“Charmander, use Ember!” Her Fire-Type released a barrage of small fires at the Ice Ball, throwing it off it’s trajectory and down to the tiled floor. Andrea helped the man up while Kaytlyn faced down with the angry Pokemon. The Spheal stared down Charmander with a surprising amount of ferocity. The Spheal let out a bark and began to roll towards Charmander at an alarmingly fast pace. The lizard hopped to the side to avoid the attack.
“That was Rollout!” Astrid exclaimed as the group parted to avoid the still rolling Pokemon. She threw down a Pokeball, “Vulpix use Fire Spin to keep it in place! Wait- but not too strong!”
The fire fox popped out and released flames from its mouth that quickly formed a circle of fire around the spheal, a muted version of it’s usual fire tornado. The Spheal rolled in place inside the fire circle for a few moments before rolling out, completely oblivious to the flames. Astrid let out a shriek and scooped Vulpix out of the way.
“Charmander, use Dragon Rage!” Charmander gathered a collection of orange energy in its mouth and released it towards the Spheal resulting in a cloud of dark smoke. When the Water-Type came into view, it seemed injured, but continued to glare at Charmander as if it wanted to continue fighting. Charmander let out a growl and Spheal’s glare faltered for a moment.
“That’s it! Spheal, return!” The handler recalled Spheal back to its Pokeball. The man sighed heavily before turning to the teens, “I’m sorry for Spheal’s behavior.”
“Is it usually like this?” Andrea asked warily. He sighed again.
“Unfortunately, yes. Spheal’s been causing trouble for the Aquarium for quite some time. Because of that, Spheal is the only Pokemon here that needs to be in a Pokeball.”
Sheyla looked up from where she was staring at a snoozing Spheal. “Is Spheal originally from the wild?” “No.” He replied, “Spheal was hatched and raised here in this Aquarium. We have no idea where he learned how to battle though.” He rubbed the back of his head, “He’s been picking fights with the other Pokemon, so we couldn’t have him in any exhibits. Similarly, he struck out in the petting zoo…”
“You let him around children?”
“Yeah, that was a mistake. This Spheal show is the last chance we have for him.”
“What do you mean last chance?” Kayla gave him a curious look.
“Well, if Spheal can’t live in the Aquarium, we either send him somewhere else or we release him to the wild. Because Spheal is so volatile, they’re leaning towards the latter.”
Sheyla narrowed her eyes. “Don’t Pokemon raised in captivity die in the wild?”
“Wait they do?!” Kayla’s eyes were wide with surprise.
“Pokemon that are raised in captivity aren’t used to life in the wild; They don’t know how to hunt  or protect themselves. It’s almost as if their natural survival instincts have been wiped away completely. Unless a Pokemon is exceptionally strong, it’s not advisable to send them into the wild on their own.”
“That’s cruel! Why would they be leaning towards that option?”
“Because Spheal’s built up a reputation as being difficult with other people and Pokemon. None of the Breeding Centers and Aquariums we’ve contacted want him.” The handler glanced down at the Pokeball in his hands. “We can’t find anyone who can handle him, and he’s purposely been messing up the shows by trying to fight everything in the immediate vicinity. Including me. The most we can do is hope that when we release Spheal, he’ll be caught by some nice trainer.”
“Or…” Adrian cut in, “You could cut out the middle and just give Spheal to a trainer directly.”
Astrid gave him a look. “What trainer could control Spheal?” She held her hand up, “And don’t say you.”
“Pff, no! I already have a Water-Type. I meant Kaytlyn.”
“What? Me?” Kaytlyn and Charmander had been half-heartedly been listening to the conversation until her name was called.
“Well, yeah. You got Spheal to back off long enough for its handler to call it back to its Pokeball. I’m sure you could handle it.” He gave her a pat on the back as if it was any consolation.
“That’s right! You took on Romeo and beat him despite the type disadvantage! You’d totally be able to handle a water type!” Astrid joined in, blatantly ignoring Kaytlyn’s motions for her to shut up. The twin turned to Janine in the hopes that she’d stop them.
“...You might be able to teach Spheal to calm down. You’re pretty calm in most situations.”
“No I’m not!”
“You have to admit that Spheal gives you a tactical advantage. Spheal would give you an advantage over Rock-Types and Ground-Types. Which are strong against Charmander.” Sheyla added.
Kaytlyn turned to her Charmander who was staring up at her intently. “What do you think? Would you be okay with another Pokemon on our team?” Charmander seemed to consider a moment before letting out a happy sort of growl, letting the flame on its’ tail grow larger. “Well if you’re okay with it…”
“You seem to be a strong trainer. I’m trusting you with Spheal okay? So… take good care of him.” The handler gently placed the Pokeball in her cupped hands. “I should go practice the routine with the others, so good luck with Spheal!” The handler said brightly, leading the Spheal herd away through a door.
“So… what now?”
~*~*~*~*~
With the aquarium trip cut short, the teens sat out in the grass outside the Pokemon Center, lounging on the grass in various states of relaxation. Kind of.
“Kaytlyn, just let it out!” Kayla was thoroughly done with her sister.
“No! It’s going to attack me or something!”
“Then I’ll do it for you!” Kaytlyn dodged her sisters hands before she could grab the Pokeball. “Why are you so scared? Charmander is right there.”
Astrid looked up. “We could all let our Pokemon out if that helps.”
“That’s not a good idea.” Janine placed her hand on the Coordinator’s shoulder to keep her from releasing her Chikorita. “If there are too many Pokemon around it might get intimidated and then it’ll actually attack.”
Astrid let out a groan, “Then do something already! We didn’t even get to see the petting zoo area!” She threw a short twig at Kaytlyn in annoyance.
The girl gave her a dirty look before taking a deep breath. Charmander cooed in support while the other trainers backed up significantly.
“Here goes.” Kaytlyn flung the Pokeball into the air and tensed up. When Spheal materialized in front of them it immediately looked around and began to glare at Charmander. She quickly stepped between them, blocking their glares. “I’m just gonna cut in here, Spheal, I’m your trainer.”
“Way to rip off the bandage!” Kayla teased from her safe spot behind Janine. Kaytlyn sighed and knelt down to offer her hand to the Pokemon.
“Listen, we didn’t start off on the best terms, but I hope we can work together.” The Water-Type gave her an unimpressed look and turned away huffily.
“Maybe Spheal is still mad at you and Charmander.” Andrea tried.
“At this point I think it’s less that Spheal’s holding a grudge and more that this is just how he acts.”
“Oh That’s right!” Adrian nodded, “Spheal didn’t even listen to his handler!”
“You two need some bonding exercises.” Astrid suggested, “Why don’t you play a game?”
“What game do you play with a Pokemon?” Adrian wrinkled his nose.
“Ducklett, Ducklett, Yungoos?” She tried.
“No.”
“Rowlet’s funny. That’s why we get along. ” Kayla mentioned. Adrian looked at her and decided to offer his advice as well.
“My Pokemon and I have a common goal: to be the strongest team in all of Niacal.”
“Ooh, same!” Astrid gave him a hi-five, “But also Chikorita, Vulpix, and I have a lot in common personality-wise.”
“So what I’m getting from this is to have a common goal, find what we have in common, and try to find a good personality trait.”
“Yeah.”
“Basically.”
She sighed again. Janine thought for a moment.
“You battle.” Janine paused, “Or share a life-threatening experience. That’s how it worked for Arroz and Pollo.”
(“She still hasn’t explained why they’re named after food.” Andrea muttered to Sheyla.)
“Wanna re-enact the Mightyena attack?” Kaytlyn gave her a sarcastic look.
“No, but battling is actually a really good idea!” Sheyla said, “In fact it’s probably what’s gonna help you and Spheal learn more about each other! There’s a whole study about how battling strengthens the bond between Trainers and Pokemon and helps them grow!” At this, Spheal suddenly rose to attention, growing more interested the longer he heard about battling other Pokémon.
“Yeah, but who wants to battle Spheal?” Kayla asked. No one volunteered until Janine spoke up.
“I know I promised to battle Adrian today, but actually, Adrian, would you mind battling Kaytlyn and Spheal instead?” “It’s good with me, but you’re going to have to battle me next time.” Adrian said, pushing himself up off the grass. “I assume you’ll be using Spheal for this?” Kaytlyn faltered for a moment.
“I’m… not so sure… Spheal will hardly listen to what I have to say.”
“Then start off with Charmander. Having Spheal watch the battle would mean he’d understand how the battle works first.” Kayla said. Astrid let out a few condescending scoffs before pulling Kayla back by her shoulder.
“Actually, it would be better for Spheal to experience the battle with Kaytlyn. They’d get a first hand experience at a partnership.”
“And Spheal could also completely ignore Kaytlyn and do whatever it wants getting itself, Kaytlyn, or other people and Pokemon in the process.”
“Kayla, I can watch the Olympics for a week straight. It doesn’t mean I can do backflips! You can’t learn it just by watching- Especially not with battling. Besides, it’s just a practice battle. You act like they’re facing the League.”
“People could get hurt!”
“Yes. And?”
“What?”
“I thought we’ve already gone over this: I don’t care about people.”
“Wha- Astrid!”
“Kayla!” she mocked.
“Or?” Sheyla stepped to intervene, “They could double battle. That literally combines both your solutions. You’re both stupid.”
Adrian swept stray grass off his pants and stood in a battle-ready stance. The twin gave him a look before turning to the Pokedex Janine had stuffed into her hands. It said that Spheal’s known moves were Ice Ball, Water Gun, Encore, and Rollout.
“So I’ll just avoid the obvious type disadvantage. Go! Marshtomp and Ralts!”
“I told you it evolved!” Kayla pointed out to her travelling companions.
“Janine, I don’t mean to alarm you, but if Adrian’s your rival, then maybe you should invest in some Grass-Type Pokemon.” Andrea stage whispered, causing the teen to let out a sigh in acceptance. Astrid took the opportunity to scan Adrian’s evolved starter.
“Marshtomp, The Mud Fish Pokemon. This Pokémon plays in mud on beaches when the ocean tide is low. Living on muddy ground that provides poor footing has made its legs sturdy.”
“Charmander, Spheal! Let’s go!” Surprisingly, Spheal was compliant, easily hopping up next to Charmander, giving a somewhat intimidating stare to Marshtomp.
“Ralts, start us off with Magical Leaf!” Ralts raised its hands above its head, summoning up a group of glowing green leaves. Ralts threw his hands down sending the leaves spiralling towards Spheal.
“Use Ember to burn that up!” Charmander hopped in front of Spheal and shot bolts of fire at the offending leaves, burning them up to ash.
“Marshtomp, Mud Bomb!” Marshtomp dug its arms (fins?) into the ground and hurled a blob of mud at the Fire-Type who was left momentarily defenseless. Kaytlyn opened her mouth to command Spheal, but hesitated a moment too late, unsure that Spheal would even bother listening. Spheal took action for her and formed an ice ball and throwing it back, countering the attack before it could hit.
“Have more confidence in your Pokemon!” Kayla cheered from the sidelines.
“Spheal reacted before Kaytlyn did. Interesting.” Sheyla hummed, “And Spheal countered the Mud Bomb just as Charmander did with the Magical Leaf.”
“He’s learning!” Janine marvelled, “He’s a natural battler.”
Spheal reared back and prepared another ice ball to throw at Ralts.
“Spheal, wait!” Kaytlyn called out. Spheal paid her no mind and shot the Ice Ball anyway.
“Ralts use teleport!” Ralts popped out of existence for a moment dodging the ice, leaving Spheal both confused and vulnerable to attack. “Marshtomp, use Tackle!” Marshtomp let out a cry and moved to throw itself onto the Spheal with full force. Spheal panicked for a split second
“Block that with Dragon Rage!” Charmander gathered a small amount of orange energy in its mouth and shot it out at Marshtomp, not hitting it, but preventing it from continuing its’ attack. This bought Spheal enough time to bounce away from the Marshtomp in the chaos.
Janine leaned over to Sheyla and Andrea.
“Kaytlyn isn’t going to win this is she?”
“Nope.” Sheyla didn’t bother to take her eyes off of the field.
“No, she isn’t.” Andrea cast an amused glance to the side, “Marshtomp is an evolved Pokemon with a double advantage against Charmander. And Ralts knows a Grass-Type move.”
“What’s important is that Spheal learns to that Pokemon Battles aren’t just about fighting.” Sheyla explained. “Battles are about showcasing the bond between Trainer and Pokemon.”
Andrea nodded, “That’s why Adrian’s holding back on attacking. He wants Spheal to realize that. Or maybe he’s getting a feel for the battle before destroys them… Either way.” She shrugged.
“That’s kinda… brutal…” Janine turned back to the practice battle.
“Charmander, use Scratch!” Charmander aimed its claws at the Marshtomp but was easily blocked. Most of Charmander’s moves would be useless either way, the most she could do was use Smokescreen to buy time-
“Use your other Pokemon!” Kayla yelled out to her, “Idiot.”
“What?!”
“Ralts, use Confusion on Charmander!” Ralts’ eyes were glowing blue under its bangs while Charmander seemed to have a blue outline. Without warning, Charmander was flung backwards into the dirt. “Marshtomp use Tackle again!” Marshtomp nodded in assent and threw itself at the Ice-Type Pokemon. Without Charmander to help defend, her only option was… Kaytlyn threw caution to the wind and took a chance.
“Spheal, use Rollout!” Spheal had no hesitation as it began to rapidly roll and landed the first actual hit in the battle, slamming into Marshtomp’s stomach. Spheal rolled back to Kaytlyn with a happy expression on his face. “Great Job!” She received a happy bark in response.
“It listened to her!” Janine let out a happy whoop and clapped a bit in encouragement.
“Marshtomp use Water Gun!” Marshtomp puffed its’ orange cheeks up then released a strong stream of water at Charmander. Kaytlyn looked to the Pokedex in her hand before deciding her next move.
“Charmander, use Ember to counter! Full Power!” Charmander glanced back at her with a ludicrous expression but followed her direction and shot out at the water. The Fire-Type move didn’t do much, barely keeping the strong water at bay. “Great! Spheal use Rollout on Ralts!” Spheal got a flopping start and spun its way over to the Psychic-Type.
“Ralts, use Teleport to get out of there!” Ralts easily popped out of view for a few moments, allowing him to dodge Spheal’s attack. Ralts reappeared in the same spot, confident in having dodged the attack.
“Come back!” Kaytlyn let herself grin watching her half-formulated strategy come to fruition. Like a yo-yo, Spheal rolled in place for a moment before rolling back in the same direction, hitting the unsuspecting Ralts. “One more time!” Spheal stopped for a second before changing direction and hitting Marshtomp who was busy fending off Charmander’s full strength Ember. Spheal rolled back to Kaytlyn, clearly satisfied with his accomplishment.
“That was so cool!” Astrid skipped over to shower the clearly uncomfortable Spheal to shower it with head scratches.
“You can’t just- This is a battle!” Adrian yelled from his side of the field. The coordinator didn’t even spare him a glance as she scratched behind the Water-Type’s ear.
“Practice Battle. We both know that if you really wanted to battle Kaytlyn, you wouldn’t have deliberately focused on one Pokemon at a time.”
“He was what?” Kaytlyn turned to her opponent in question. He shrugged unapologetically.
“I wasn’t about to straight up destroy the Pokemon you just got. I’m not stupid. You needed to build trust.” He rolled his eyes.
“Wow. Adrian being prepared. What a scholar.” Sheyla teased. He ignored her determinedly, even when the others joined in. Meanwhile Kaytlyn crouched down to Spheal’s level.
“So, Spheal, do you wanna stay on my team?”
Spheal gave her a funny look, like he was asking something. Kaytlyn mirrored the look before deciding to just explain in general.
“I’m aiming to be a Top Trainer here in Niacal. Maybe even the Champion given enough training. There’ll be plenty more battles like that, and you can grow stronger with me and Charmander. We work together as a group. So?”
Spheal gave some aggressively enthusiastic barks, clapping its’ fins against its’ round stomach.
“I’m assuming that’s a yes.” Kaytlyn gave another grin and scratched its’ head in thanks. When she dragged her attention back to the group, Adrian was discussing tomorrow’s activities.
“Tomorrow I’m taking on Romeo. Are you guys staying to watch it?” Astrid made a hissing sort of sound.
“Yikes. We’re kinda leaving tomorrow morning…”
“Are you serious? Every time?!”
“I don’t know, if you’re upset ask Mew for advice. Anyway, we’ll be heading to Silkgem for Janine’s second badge.” Kayla explained. She glanced at her other friend, “And probably stopping at any and all contests for Astrid. I can almost guarantee that you’ll catch up in a day or two.”
“If we don’t run into trouble.” Janine sighed, “Our battle is postponed again.”
“I don’t get it, why can’t we battle now?”
“For one, your Pokemon are exhausted and second, you should probably rest for tomorrow’s Gym Battle. Just a suggestion.”
“Also, Janine has the Harbor Badge and you don’t. If you ask me it’s kind of unfair since she has more badges than you.” Astrid cut in, clearly hoping to rile him up. She clearly succeeded if his indignant tone was any clue.
“Oh shut up!”
“On the upside,” she continued, “We can finally have that sleepover we didn’t get to have in Rocens city. We can make face masks!”
“Please don’t make face masks.” Janine groaned, causing her friends to laugh.
Narrator: With a new friend by her side, Kaytlyn begins to build her Pokemon team! With adventure just beyond the horizon, what will our heroes face next?
The entire group was sitting in a room that was clearly too small to house them. There were two bunks on either side. The bottom bunks held Sheyla, Andrea, Astrid and Adrian while Janine and the twins opted to sit on the floor rather than cram themselves onto the Pokemon Center beds. After their 4th round of Uno they began to calm down and were leisurely throwing down cards without any real malice. A thought crossed Janine’s mind as she threw down a Red Two.
“No seriously, you’ve never met team SubZero?” Janine asked seriously. Andrea shook her head while Popplio gave tilted its head.
“Not once.”
“Huh.”
“If you do, try to stop them from whatever it is they’re doing. It’s probably going to be nefarious and involve destruction.” Astrid brushed her Vulpix’s tail while he obediently sat still.
“Honestly.”
“It’s so weird though, what are their goals? Why drill in the forest? Why poach Pokemon and go through all the effort to kidnap them again?” Sheyla pointed out, “And why would that guy let you go?” She motioned to Janine.
“He said something about truths and ideals; Honestly I blanked out.” She shrugged.
“And why hire other people to do the poaching when they could clearly do it themselves?”
“The poachers said they were offering lots of money too.”
“It doesn’t add up!”
“You know what does? This Wild Draw Four!” Astrid howled, breaking the tense silence. Kayla who was next to sighed and accepted the cards with slight grumbling as the game heated up again and the topic was almost completely forgotten.
