Huntlow Grom Redraws (The Mud)
Huntlow Grom Masterpost:
Previous: Overview: (Redone)
Next: The Halls
Video:
AHAHA YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH THESE? THE REDRAWS HAVE RETURNED!!!
First two things since I KNOW I will get comments about this
"Why is Willow's hair still braided?" Because I headcannon she cut her hair just before Grom. She figured it'd get in the way of her fighting Grom itself. At this point in time, she had not cut her hair yet, seeing as it's not until this moment when she decided to swap with Hunter.
"How did Willow use the light glyph?" IT IS NOT A LIGHT GYPLH. It's a light spell. "But that isn't a plant spell?" Light spells are confirmed to be an incredibly easy for any witch to do. Amity even says "That's nothing. A child could do a light spell." In Covention. I see no reason for Willow to be unable to cast a simple light spell.
I should also mention that this is NOT a Huntlow swap AU. Lumity Grom is still cannon. Everything in the show remains the same. This is simply a future Grom during the WAD timeskip. I'm just redrawing Willow and Hunter in their places because I think it's cool to see what they'd look like in these scenes.
Anyway, hell yeah, I'm finally back to these. This was incredibly fun to make, and some of these poses were challenging to replicate with Hunter and Willow's body types. The lighting was a pain in the ass, too, I ended up going through two different ways of doing it, I had gotten two panels done with the old method before having to redo them with the new better method. By panel 9, I went back and added my personal stylized shading on the hair and faces of Willow and Hunter. I intially left it out in favor of more show accuracy, then realized that I just didn't like how my art looked without it.
I did change a few of the expressions and poses from the screenshots I referenced.
Panel one is obvious, I had to change the hands due to Willow casting a spell circle rather then using a glyphs.
I made Hunter a bit more scared then Amity looked since I headcannon he has a phobia of mud.
In panel 5 I changed the expressions of both. Willow is worried instead of cheerful, and Hunter is sad instead of giving Willow a bitter look. Neither of the original expressions made sense for their character.
Willow in panels 7, 9, and 10 has little lines under her eyes to show that deep down, she is afraid and part of her doesn't want to replace Hunter, but she is doing it to be reilable and help Hunter. She'd rather make someone else happy than do what's best for her own well being.
Also made Hunter blush being starstruck because... well I wanted to haha.

To make myself feel better, I’m going to focus on the positives of the episode:
*Hunter’s newfound love of wolves
*Camilla being a closet sci-fi nerd
*How impressed Darius will be when he sees Hunter’s sewing skills
*Everything relating to Huntlow
*Vee getting a goth s/o hopefully
*Lumity couple costume
*Gus no longer wanting to re-establish contact with the giraffes (they were banished for a reason, sweetie)
*Everyone using a more haunted version of duolingo to learn spanish
*The words “big bro got a hot witch girlfriend and lil’ bro got jealous” ROFL right on the money!
*Hunter being part of a family after being isolated his whole life
*Willow having fun with a devil costume (and pitchfork)
*The scrapbook!
*(even if it led to tragedy and istn’t actually a positive in and of itself) the possession and fight scene. They were both just really well done!

Huntlow is such a great dynamic. Like, they don’t have the pacing and icon status of Lumity or the history and angst of Raeda, but what they share in common with all these ships is their payoff.
Huntlow pays tribute to the character development of both Hunter and Willow in a way no other relationship in the Owl House does. When Luz and Amity meet, they’re still flawed. Luz is still oblivious and naive. Amity is still perfectionistic and cruel. They spend so much time together, recognizing their own shortcomings as well as each others, and this acknowledgment of who they used to be and who they became through each other, is the foundation of their relationship. Luz learns to accept herself and be vulnerable and Amity learns to express herself, quirks and all, and accept unconditional love from another person.
Raeda is, in many ways, the perfect relationship dynamic. Two characters who’ve been together for so long, they know the other better than they know themselves. They have all these memories from when they were kids, and despite experiencing so many ups and downs in their relationship, they still care for each other. Even after Raine breaks up with Eda and begins distancing themselves from Eda during season 2B, Eda still knows how much Raine cares for her. They know each other on a deeper level than most ever will.
But Huntlow? They didn’t meet the other when they were at their lowest. Willow didn’t meet Hunter when he was the Golden Guard, and Hunter didn’t meet Willow when she was “half-a-witch”. They only know each other for who they are now, not the labels people projected onto them or the expectations assigned to them.
Hunter was forced to be stoic and strong, but around Willow, he can be awkward. He can be sweet. Willow became shy and insecure because she was bullied for her abomination magic. But now, she’s a plant witch, an athlete. One of the best plant witches, actually, as well as the captain of a sports team she created. Hunter has only ever know Willow for her strength, her fortitude, and her self-assurance.
Thankfully, this part of the fandom has shrunk considerably, in fact, it was never big to begin with, but I do still see people who dislike Huntlow because they feel it’s rushed, and they’re allowed to feel this way. But Huntlow only feels rushed in part because of Disney’s cancellation of the Owl House, but mostly because of how their relationship begins. When they first meet each other, Willow is a “captain” and Hunter is just Hunter. Luz is the one who sees most of Hunter’s unfavorable moments. His obedience to his abusive uncle and loyalty to the coven system, and every other character besides Hunter remembers when Willow was the meek and timid witch who had no voice and could barely do magic. Seeing two characters who meet after they’ve overcome so much and after they’ve discovered so much about themselves feels antithetical to most relationships in this show.
There’s also detractors specifically because of Hunter’s trauma. They don’t feel comfortable seeing him enter a relationship when he’s still unpacking Belos’ physical and emotional abuse. It’s fair, but what people don’t seem to understand is that traumatized people have partners. Victims and survivors of abuse enter relationships. If Owl House has taught anyone anything about love, it’s that love doesn’t cure, but it does change, even heal. Trauma shouldn’t prevent people from having healthy relationships, in fact, they need healthy relationships just as much as anyone else, if not more. Support helps the recovery process. Yes, the media has enforced toxic portrayals of romantic relationships, and yeah, many stories, particularly made for movies and for television, present love as this magical force that melts cold hearts and purifies dark souls. But, there is still a place in media for the representation Huntlow offers of abuse victims and their journey to recovery.

TOH headcanon (human au edition)
but it's just Luz and Hunter cause I can't get enough of their sibling relationship (+mentions of lumity and huntlow).
Hunter's parents died in an accident of sorts so he went to live with his uncle when he was just a baby. He was homeschooled by him but he was allowed to play in the forest next to his house.
Luz loved to explore and play adventures in those same woods, so it was just a matter of time until they met each other and quickly became friends.
Maybe without his uncle's knowledge, Hunter would spend entire afternoons at Luz's (Camila definitely let him stay for dinner on multiple occasions) She knew something was up but she didn't want to accuse anyone of anything without solid proof.
One day shit hits the fan. His uncle basically ends up kicking him out of the house and without knowing where else to turn to, Hunter goes to Luz's with a single backpack with whatever he had time to grab.
At this point they're quite young (8-10 years old maybe) so they don't really understand what's going on but Camila tries her best to make him feel welcome and safe.
There's obviously some sort of legal procedure to sort everything out. It's a very hard moment for Hunter but he knows that everything will get better afterward.
Camila offers to take him in so he stays at Luz's house and after a couple years, she talks to them both about making Hunter officially a part of the family.
Luz had some problems at school because she was a bit different and didn't get along with the other kids. Camila thinks that since Hunter has to start school too, they could just enroll somewhere else and so they do.
They're like 12-14 at this point so maybe a change of scenery is all they need.
Hunter learns basic Spanish from Luz and the scary owl app.
They start together at a new school and Luz starts to feel like she fits in better. Hunter is socializing with other people his age for the first time since he met Luz and everything seems to go great.
They both make common friends with Willow and Gus, then later with Amity.
Luz and Hunter have typical sibling fights because Luz always eats the last strawberry yogurt when she knows that's Hunter's favorite dessert. Or when Hunter plays video games too loud and Luz can't focus on whatever she's doing.
But sometimes they hang out in each other's rooms. Hunter secretly loves spending time in Luz's room just hanging out. He doesn't like being alone for long periods of time even if he can't explain exactly why.
They sometimes talk girls. Luz brings up a boy or two at some point. But they both end up realizing who's crushing over who so at some point "talking girls" just meant talking about Willow and Amity.
They're just happy having finally found a place where they belong. Some had to fight a bit more to get to it but, in the end, everything fell into place and that's what matters.

Personally I find the chemistry between Luz and Hunter obvious and if the show was created even 5-10 years ago no one would have much of a problem with Hunter and Luz shippers. It would’ve been what everyone expected to be endgame. Sure, I love lumity, it’s a cute sapphic high school romance. But narratively, there’s a case to be made for lunter while lumity is more just to be cute. Plus Luz is bisexual so any argument about erasing her sexuality doesn’t make sense. Plus it’s not like fandom is on the same level as the actual tv show like if a group of people want to imagine Luz and Hunter dating that does absolutely nothing to take away from the canon sapphic romance! I don’t have anywhere I feel like I can express this without getting literalky DOGPILED by Twitter teenagers who think the end all be all of queer liberation is making cartoon teenagers kiss.
I somewhat heard that type of rant that I've been interested to discuss before.. But I think it's better if Hunter has been introduced first than Amity tho. To make Hunter as a Male Lead. Yet the romance plot of TOH didn't go on that route. Because (ugh, another straight couple in Disney)
Unfortunately, everything has been already set by arranging Willow and Hunter as a pair instead Hunter is compatible to be paired with Luz because, Luz is with Amity now and both had feelings for each other before Hunter came. So I can understand what they're trying to defend the sapphic canon ship because THEY NEED LGBTQA+ REP, so if there is a straight couple in their favorite cartoon/show, the fans will gone RIOT and they will forced to make the straight couple to stay friends or platonic then shove it to everyone's throats. But their annoyance of not wanting Luz (who is a CANON BI) had a chance to NON CANONICALLY be together with a GUY who has 10x potential chemistry than Lumity. (I also love Lumity too from enemies to friends to lovers). The thing is, Willow shows to become the heroine for Hunter yet still GoldenLuz/Lunter scenes has more sparks even tho they're jumping to make a side couple (Huntlow) alongside with Raine and Eda (Raeda).
And the biggest and shittiest agenda they've got in the TOH fandom is to make these two characters (Luz and Hunter) as sibling-coded into their dynamic which is a HEADCANON. But FOR THEM IT'S A FACT because of the quarrel, all that banter and starting to helping and protecting each other away from danger/harm. And yet they theorize that when we look at Lunter, it's like there are both young Philip and Caleb.
So the issue of Lunter is because the TOH fandom can easily took it down or banish the ideas and options about Luz and Hunter to become a non-canon ship especially boy x girl ships in general media where the main protagonist is a BISEXUAL/GAY/LESBIAN or part of the LGBT rep. Some of them are a bit oversensitive by the "non-canon" ships might be ruined their canon gay/sapphic ship. Like only you can ship this MC with their same gender and NOTHING ELSE. I tried to keep away from the shipping discourse because the majority wants Lunter to see as siblings, and then they will despise somebody in every fiber of their being who ships Luz and Hunter where they are both BI for each other. Like who are they to have a right to demand a person who just wanna ship without their validation? Toxic TOH fans ain't had a right to accuse somebody because they LIKE a ship that they DON'T like. Yet also the Lunter shippers didn't wish for Lunter to be canon as well. Because they can ship them without a problem canon or not-canon as long as they don't attack nor cause such any harm to others. Yet these antis has so many claims to prove that their ship Lunter is wrong and there's nothing to support of shipping them romantically. So they will non-stop accusing Lunter shippers based on their ship which i migt turned out to become 'problematic' by many.
Luz and her bisexuality is the purest rep where she likes and attracted to guys and girls. Yet when they keep telling to such people that it will erase her sapphic love between her and Amity if Luz is going to be with Hunter in the long run.. That doesn't mean Luz isn't Bisexual anymore. How can these people pushing the hatred towards Lunter where they haven't heard the word "multishipping?" So every shipper has options which good ships to be shipped with this character. They never acknowledged poly ships too so, it's too late to speak up to toxic anti Lunters out there. Stubborn as hell lol. As a Bisexual, people must understand that they cannot ruined their Bisexuality by liking or dating a guy!

I've seen a lot of people talk about the parallels in The Owl house, such as:
Lumity and Raeda dancing as a a fight strategy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raine/Hunter dying in thr arms of Eda/Willow:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eda/Willow protecting their loved ones, and them being used as a shield:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is cool actually, it's really cute that this people are all connected in some way, and that's what I'm trying to say.
I've heard a lot of people joke about how Huntlow are always parallerising the other couples, and the popular headcanon is that Hunter falling in love with Willow is a parallerism to Caleb falling for Evelyn, which is true and obvious, BUT, I've also heard people saying that Lumity is the real parallerism because it's literally a human who prefers the Demon Realm falling in love with a witch, and you know what? That is also true! But wht nobody says is that Raine and Eda are also a parallerism! Hunter falling for Willow mimics the love that Caleb felt gor Evelyn, while Edalyn, possible descendant of Evelyn, falling for Raine mimics the love that Evelyn felt for Caleb!
So this is the point: all three main ships aren't parallerising each other, but Caleb and Evelyn! What if they had their own dance/fight scene? What if someone used Caleb (or even their child) as a shield toward Evelyn? And of course, they totally had a "dying in your arms tonight" scene.
So it's like this:
Raeda: Have Evelyn's descendant, so a piece of her love is with them.
Huntlow: have Caleb's grimwalker, so (a part of him and) a piece of his love is with them.
Lumity: it's the pure expression and representation of their love, being the same kind.
We don't know a lot about Evelyn, we learned her name a month ago, so we can't talk about her relationship with Caleb, we know about Caleb seeing her as someone new, someone warm and free who teached him how to live without the limitations of the 1600's (which is the same as Hunter falling for the sweet and strong spirit of Willow, who teached him about the wonders of the normal life of teenagers), so we could guess that something similar happened with Evelyn and Raeda, Eda was a free spirit... And a wild one, wild enough to brake stimming toys, and Raine was calm, and helped her focus, what if Caleb did the same with Evelyn?
Caleb: I can fix her...
Evelyn: I can make him worse...
And they both succeded.
Which is the opposite with Lumity, in their case, the human was the wild spirit one and the witch was the uptight one.
Long story short: this could mean that their love is so strong and important that is eternal and keep affecting the story after 400 years.
This is so cool omg

Hello, I'm here as said I would. I've got a few questions. What magic(s) does everyone specialize in/study? Are glyphs back and in use? What were the inspirations for making the fankids the way they are?
Have a great day! Toodles!
Everyone's magic is as follows (and I'll be answering question 2 with that!):
Carmilla: Oracle/Abominations (they're both purple, they're both spooky, and she has a natural talent for Oracle magic while also having been taught Abominations since she was a kid)
Mickey: Bard/Beastkeeping/Illusions (they freaking love music, they freaking love animals, and they freaking love messing with people)
Evan: Healing/Construction (the first one highlights his belief that magic is a tool to help others, and the second one highlights his love for building things)
Lila Rose: Plants/Potions/Oracle (she's naturally gifted at Plants like her mom, she has a keen interest in alchemy, and Oracle magic is as close as she can get to legal necromancy)
Heather: Oracle/Healing (it helps to plan things if you can see the future, and she fully intends on being a doctor someday)
Hector: Bard/Illusions (the two tracks that are often underestimated yet are all about showmanship and not underestimating your opponent? Sign him up!)
Holland: They of course can't use magic organically, but thankfully, the magic of the glyphs has returned thanks to King! Just like their aunt Luz, they see no reason to restrict themselves and dabble in a little of everything.
Jayla: Potions/Abominations (she's never minded getting her hands a little bit messy, and both tracks encourage her to think creatively on the field and in real life)
Silas: Abominations/Construction (two tracks that are some of the physically strongest and are the most useful in a fight)
And as for the inspirations, well...
Carmilla is, obviously, inspired in part by Carmilla---both the classic novella and the fantastic webseries that shares its name. I've noticed a lot of "main" Lumity fankids, i.e. either only children or oldest children, who primarily take after Luz, and while that's incredible to see, I feel like we're kind of missing out on the chance to do one who primarily takes after Amity. Mickey kinda just... sprouted from my imagination, really, I'm still not sure how I landed on them. Their design and personality just popped into my brain.
Evan is named after both Evelyn and Evan Kelmp from Dimension 20's Misfits & Magic series, who is a character that absolutely radiates Hunter vibes (the pitch for his character was "kid who was born to be the Dark Lord and wants absolutely nothing to do with that"). In personality, however, he's primarily inspired by Palamedes from The Locked Tomb, which I thought would fit well for a Huntlow kid. And Lila Rose... I did make her with the idea that she'd mostly take after Willow in terms of personality, but I also loved the thought of a Huntlow kid just being weird. She and Evan are both part Grimwalker, after all. (Plus, I love the mad scientist aesthetic too much to let it die with Philip. His crazy dark cottagecore great-niece can figure out how to use what he learned for good, just to rub it in.)
Heather and Hector were actually originally gonna be Jayla's younger siblings---with Gustholomule being the couple that has no kids but a plethora of pets---but I've seen a lot of really cool fics and fanart of Gus and Matt breaking up and then getting back together due to there being kids in the picture and rebuilding a healthier relationship as a result of that, and... I dunno. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense---of course Gus and Matt, two characters who struggle with anxiety and not being good enough, would have a daughter who's a born overachiever and needs everything to be perfect. And of course Gus and Matt, two characters who have a flair for the dramatic yet tend to hide their inner struggles behind the flash and the confidence, would have a son who's a born thespian and is still learning how to step back from the theatrics and just be real. It just works.
Holland... again, I'm not entirely sure. They're essentially what happens when two incredibly kind alt people raise a kid. I knew that I wanted someone to round out Evan and Carmilla's friend group, and their personality and backstory just sprung from there.
With Jayla, well... I've seen some Skarey fankids who are more femme-leaning, but again, partially inspired by my love for The Locked Tomb, I decided that I wanted Jayla to be butch. And seeing as both of her moms were athletes, I figured that it wouldn't be too unusual for her to be, too. The rest of her personality kinda sprung up around there.
Silas came to me pretty much immediately---I knew that I wanted him to be an entitled popular kid who eventually shifts into a snarky common sense friend a la David Rose or Wallace Wells, and I knew that I wanted him and Evan to be rivals-to-lovers. At the same time, though, I didn't want Boscha to be a bad mom, and I eventually settled on her trying her best but also just not being in a good place mentally, which would absolutely fuel Silas's need to make her happy.
Also, I should clarify---Silas and Evan are not a story of "bully meets victim." The two of them are on equal footing, and their rivalry is based on pure academic pettiness and clashing worldviews. Both of them are dicks to each other, and both of them have instances of needing to grow as people before they can even consider each other friends.

What do you think about Huntlow? Was it really supposed to be a canon ship or just there for the fans to be interpret?
So as a couple they're fine. I can see them being happy and cute but also INCREDIBLY boring because you have a girl with not a lot of personality with a boy who struggles to keep a consistent personality. A cardboard cutout for hugs and an angst bucket. That's not all that interesting to me.
That may sound harsh but as far as their interactions go and how they behave with each other, that's what they look to me together as. I find both more interesting separate than together because together they're just... happy. Which again, good for them, it makes the ship fine but there's no narrative hook for me there. Not enough contrast for me to ever imagine them fighting because neither holds enough of an opinion about something to have a fight. Admittedly, that's still better than Lumity where I wouldn't expect Amity to ever stick to a position if Luz told her not to by the end of the series. That doesn't make it interesting though.
As for whether or not they're meant to be canon... Yes. Not just because of the blushing but actually because the show likes to have relationships as part of transformation and who the partner is almost always dictates to some extent the transformation that has/will happen. This isn't even only romantic. Lilith and Matt both befriend comic relief characters (though I suspect Gus and Matt were meant to be the mlm rep which... Your decision on how to feel about that) and thus their characters become comedic and punchlines which brings them narratively closer to their partner. 'Mama Eda' as a term comes from the episode that Raine is introduced where Raine's calm and focus actually reflects how much Eda has given up chaos for responsibility. Though shoutout to this happening in reverse as well as Raine becomes a duplicate of Eda during Them's the Breaks because these writers literally only know one type of relationship to write. And finally, of course, Amity becomes more lighthearted and carefree and stops caring about consequences as much, just like Luz. When she fully is willing to abandon anyone but Luz, they get together. -_-
It's part of what makes the relationships in TOH feel inherently toxic to some extent, at least to me. Rather than highlighting what makes each person unique and those strengths being what each other admires in their partner, it's much more about one conforming to the other. Losing their identity and picking up the one that belongs to the person they like. Which, you know, isn't good. A partner should push you to be the best version of yourself, not a new person for them.
Huntlow... Is both the same and different. The plus side is neither conforms to becoming the other person which is good! This happens because instead of a single arc being capstoned by the two finding each other like the rest, it's actually twin arcs meant to highlight one another. Hunter's arc of becoming pathetic and losing all of his actual skills, control, prestige, etc. like that ends with him becoming small, a failure and really just not much of a fighter at all. Not because he disavows fighting but because he's just bad at it. This all is meant to help Willow look stronger, more competent and more confident as she refuses any side of her that was shy for someone who will make you listen to her: Period. Remember, she does still force Hunter, against his will, onto the Grudgby field because while she talks a big game about being like him with her magical issues, she is still the Titan blessed prodigy while he has an actual disability.
Which... Boy scars from my brother are real sharp on that point and I'll just leave it at that.
Honestly, when described like that, you can see why the two were meant to get together. In a story actually about the two instead of Willow being a character who sat out almost an entire season until her boyfriend showed up, it could have been really interesting to see the two helping each other grow like this. They also would have needed more consistent characterization for this too. As it is, it's just boring because they don't have an actual dynamic between one another, just a meta one I can analyze onto them that is over by the time they get together.
Which makes Huntlow just like any other TOH relationship, for better and more often worse.

-flower crowns??????? flower crowns.
-BEING PART OF THE GOOD WITCH AZURA BOOKCLUB
-also spending hours in the library together, reading aloud or just separately, not really talking but still feeling together

-helping eda and Raine with their night terrors

The Huntlow Question
With the following post, I want to have a nuanced discussion about the possibility of Huntlow as a canon couple in The Owl House and what that could mean for the show. There’s been a lot of toxicity surrounding this ship as of late, but I want to analyze it from a neutral perspective outside of “are they cute or not,” and I really hope some of y’all do too. This is not an “anti” post, nor is it a shipping post. It’s just my thoughts.
So, let’s do this!
With the past couple of episodes, I feel like a lot of us are picking up on the possibility of Hunter and Willow becoming a couple in the show. They’ve gotten very close recently, have shared a few shy glances and blushes, and they have been very consistently rescuing each other in the battle sequences. Given how all of those tactics were used by the show to establish Lumity as a canon ship, it comes as no surprise that many of us are wondering if Huntlow is next.
And, if you’re like me, you were probably very confused about this.
Like, where did this come from? I thought they were just friends! I headcannoned both as queer in a mutually exclusive way! How did this happen?????
Well, let me try to explain.
First, let’s address those first impulses. I, personally, have been a part of many fandoms for shows that are very similar to TOH, specifically Steven Universe, She-Ra, and Star vs the Forces of Evil, and I think a lot of you have too. Those shows have very complicated histories where shipping is concerned, and they have all been accused of canonizing ships for the purpose of fanservice (or just because a few writers liked the ships), even though they weren’t planned from the start. This created extremely toxic environments surrounding shipping in the fandoms. I won’t go into the credibility of those accusations, but that is VERY important context for the situation with TOH.
Because a lot of us came from those fandoms, and that likely includes both the shippers and people accusing the shows of fanservice. I think we’re all scenting blood in the water with the whole Huntlow situation, and I personally would really like to avoid devolving into toxic cesspools by way of the old fandoms. However, in order to nip this whole thing in the bud, we need to ask ourselves: Is Huntlow fanservice?
And my answer is: I really don’t think so.
Supposing it is meant to be canon, I’d like to give the crew the benefit of the doubt and say that they actually have been planning this for some time. Then, the question becomes, why does it seem so rushed?
Well, why is anything in TOH rushed?
Yup.
It all comes back to the cancellation.
You see, if I had to guess, I’d say the crew had been considering setting up Hunter and Willow for some time, perhaps since the beginning, but they were planning on giving them more focus in season 3. And that would make sense! Seeing as Willow has gained a newfound confidence and Hunter is finally coming into his own, it stands to reason that they’d get more focus next season, and now that we know that they’re trapped in the Human Realm, they’re going to be getting an awful lot more screen time together. This would be the perfect time to set up a romantic relationship if one had been planned.
Unfortunately, they’re not going to get a full season 3. We probably won’t be getting much in the way of one-on-one interactions between Hunter and Willow, which it probably why the crew has included more references to them being a potential couple recently. By the time these episodes were in development, they knew they weren’t getting a full season 3, so they had to do the work to stick the hints in sooner, which has led to the rushed feeling.
However, this raises the question of why exactly they would have kept Huntlow at all. Given the mixed reaction, it doesn’t seem like a lot of people were really expecting Huntlow to be canon, and I know for a fact that several popular headcanons placed both of them as queer (gay for Hunter, and lesbian or aroace for Willow were both common). So if they couldn’t do it properly, and it wasn’t particularly popular, why do it at all?
I puzzled over this for a while. I will admit that I was kind of disappointed at first to see such an abundantly queer show that prized itself on its friendships and found families go down the path of what I perceived as a pretty generic hetero couple, especially since I was so glad to see them as a healthy example of a platonic relationship between a male and female character. Obviously, they can still be bi/pan/etc. but we haven’t actually seen any in-canon evidence to put them as anything other than straight, assuming their feelings for each other are romantic. And, granted, even I can admit that my personal headcanons don’t have to be true, but that still doesn’t explain why they would forego an adorable friendship for a romance.
And then it hit me:
Thematic Relevance.
What is Hunter’s story arc about?
Well, at its core, it’s about him breaking a cycle of abuse and coming into his own outside of his toxic upbringing. And that whole storyline is intricately woven with the backstory of the Wittebane brothers. Philip and Caleb were as close as siblings could be, but Caleb stepped outside of his brother’s little bubble of morality and fell in love with a witch, and so Philip killed him. He then harvested his bones and made dozens of copies of Caleb for hundreds of years, desperately hoping that the next one would be the brother he wanted, then relishing in killing them each time they “betrayed” him.
Hunter is the first grimwalker to break out of that cycle, and how he has done that is by forming the relationships that his predecessors were never able to successfully develop before Philip got to them. The first and most obvious of these relationships is with Luz, who is filling the role of a younger sibling that Philip would have been for Caleb, though in a more healthy and supportive way than before. He is then also able to find a parental figure in Darius in order to replace Belos, something the other Golden Guards were likely unable to do. The only remaining unfulfilled relationship, thematically speaking, would be that of the witch Caleb fell for.
Enter, Willow.
Hunter is broken and distressed; he has been exposed to the world of “wild magic,” one he has been told is wicked all his life, and he’s finding that he enjoys it. I imagine he’s in a very similar position to Caleb and the other grimwalkers were when they had their own doubts. Then, here comes this bright, confident, powerful, and kind young witch, who is revolutionizing her field. She’s everything a “wild witch” isn’t supposed to be, and above it all, she believes in Hunter. Of course he’s going to fall for her; it’s kind of a pattern!
Now, this analysis is a bit Hunter-centric, but I think that has more to do with the fact that we don’t know anything about Caleb’s witch girlfriend yet. It is possible that she will be very similar personality-wise to Willow. There’s a reason Eda respects her! And even beyond that, it’s very clear that she relates to Hunter an awful lot, and she truly cares about him. Whether we’ll see that blossom into romance remains to be seen, but it does seem like they are intentionally building many of the main characters of the show into parallels to characters in the show’s history, so including a romance of this sort would make sense. And if this is the case, that would explain why it couldn’t be cut for time from season 3.
I don’t know if Huntlow is going to be canon. I don’t know what it would look like if it was. I don’t know the specifics of the Wittebanes’ backstory. But I do love this show, and I trust its crew. I may not know what’s coming, but I am wholly invested in this show, and I know that all of you are too.
So, thanks for reading! It couldn’t have been easy, I know. Please offer your own analyses if you have them!
And please, I am begging you, stop treating each other like crap over two cartoon teenagers.

Huntlow Grom Redraws (The Confession)
Huntlow Grom Masterpost
Previous: The Fear
Next: The Dance
Video:
Out of the redraws ive done recently, this one was by far the most fun to do. It's probably because I reused a lot of backgrounds from "The Fear," and didn't have to worry about lightening like in "The Mud," but oh boy, I'll have to worry about BOTH of those things in "The Dance,"
I think one of my favorite things in this part is drawing Waffles' expression. We got a live Waffles reaction everyone! I did have some trouble deciding what to do with her in panel 6. Due to her positioning on Willow's right, the angle she was at would make Waffles almost entirely obscured. Originally I had her starting to fly to Hunter in that panel, and she wasn't even in panel 7 due to that, but once I realized too much time would have passed between panels 6 and 8 for Waffles to be in that position in panel 8 (which didn't happen until the lining and coloring phase btw) I had to redo her in panel 6 and add her in panel 7.
I changed some expressions as usual.
In panel 1 Willow is angry at Grom for hurting Hunter.
The biggest one being in panels 5-7 I changed Willow's expression from Luz's happy one, to one that's more... well, pretending to be happy. The reason is because of the biggest difference between the Huntlow Grom and the Lumity Grom is that the feelings for lumity were not yet mutual at their first Grom. For Huntlow, they are, and once Willow saw Hunter's note, she was afraid Hunter might like someone else. Which is why she is trying to be supportive, but also a bit upset as she's now even more worried about her chances with Hunter. (Little does she know the note was for her all along) Hence, the expression change.
In panels 5, 7, and 8 I added blush to Hunter for no other reason then I thought it's cute.
Panel 9 I changed Hunter to have a smile determined expression, which continues into panel 10, while Willow is also determined, but frowning.
I might've missed something but that's all the expression changes outside of the obvious major difference that a palisman is there.

Huntlow Brainrot Finale Time Let’s gooo!
Well, I say brainrot which by all means it is but this final portion of this essay/analysis/rant/distraction from doing some housework etc. is fairly grounded by my standards. Anyway let’s get to it.
This segment is primarily more focused on Willow than anything else. In particular this scene:
Tumblr media
Personally, I am of the opinion that this is by far the lamest thing Willow has ever done and I mean this in the kindest way possible. Part 1 of this hell that I have created went over how certain scenes exist for the purpose of ship teasing. And this is by far probably the most direct to the point example of that concept for these 2.
I want to temporarily ignore the wink/finger gun as not only is it the one of the most generic flirty expressions in animated media it’s also a loud enough gesture to distract you from the real odd aspect of the scene.
That being that no one else is around for this brief exchange. There has been a lot of debate on whether Willow’s friendship with Hunter is meant to be strictly platonic or not from her side and I think this scene heavily leans towards the latter
Willow deliberately waits until Amity, Vee and even Gus(her bff) are out of the shack and presumably ear shot to address Hunter. Privacy if you will. Wanting to borrow the book to engage herself with his interest by itself is pretty normal as they are friends.
But when ya consider that Gus is the person who introduced Hunter to the book series ya kinda stop and think: Wait if Gus is also a fan why didn’t she just inquire about borrowing the book from him or Hunter when he was in the room with everyone else?
The answer pretty much explains itself from there.
To conclude these brainrot posts I would like to clarify that by no means do I think this is definite proof that this ship will be canon. Moreso that  Willow is fairly observant of her love interest’s crush ahead of time and that there’s defiently some level of interest on both sides of the deck here even if its fairly new and not like in  love like our main ship  Lumity or even the complicated situation that is Raeda.
Maybe it’ll be explicitly canon or maybe just implied. Dunno. My only real takeaway is that there’s more factors leading to them progressing at some point down the road rather than a rejection. If Willow truly had no interest she would have told him by now. She’s too observant not to.

Some of my Top Ships for Valentine’s Day!
This was supposed to be like 5 ships but shit got a little bit out of hand…
In no particular order:
Helia x Flora (Winx Club): they were my first OTP, it’s a classic, we know it, we love it, they invented the word adorkable. They are just… chef’s kiss
Callum x Rayla (the Dragon Prince): they are… my everything. From their very first interaction I was like… oh. They just balance each other out so well and it’s so much fun to watch them fall in love and grow together even if there have been a few… bumps in the road recently… they are my babies.
Runaan x Ethari (the Dragon Prince): WHERE IS MY SPIN OFF?! I NEED TO SEE HOW THESE TWO FELL IN LOVE! They just… the second Ethari was introduced these two had my heart and I just… I can’t even describe what it is about them that just gets me right there.
Lizzie x Daring (Ever After High): I said what I said. No regrets. Should’ve been endgame. You don’t get it, they get to be their real selfs when they’re with each other! The fucking potential! We only got 5 min in the webisodes and like a few dialogues in the books but they will forever live rent free in my brain.
Zuko x Katara (Avatar): …was this one predictable? I feel like this one was predictable, it just made so much sense with their respective characters, story lines and everything about them was just set up so perfectly but just never paid off. But yeah… these two were PERFECTION, up until they didn’t end up together somehow.
Percy x Annabeth (Percy Jackson): Come on, this is THE ship. I apologize in advance for the person I will become when the show comes out cause I’ll only be talking about them for a very long time.
Luka x Marinette (Miraculous Ladybug): You don’t understand how much I mean it when I say that I will go down with this ship. Luka is just… the cutest? And like… Marinette? Being supported? Being loved? Getting to have someone on her side that doesn’t feel like she owes them anything? Is this a potential OTP? Yes, yes it is.
Inej x Kaz (Six of Crows): I don’t think I have to say anything here. These two are just… wow. They would both kill for each other and… I love that it’s not an ‘I can fix them’ relationship, it’s a ‘I will change and be better for them’ relationship and I just…they are the pinnacle of romance.
Raven x Beast Boy (Teen Titans/Comics): Come on… do I have to say anything else? These two were made for each other! They understand each other in a way that almost no one else can, they both have dark sides that could take them over but they fight it, be it in different ways. And I just… they deserved so much more.
Mateo x Rufus (They Both Die at the End): If you haven’t read this book… it’s one of my faves but you shouldn’t read it unless you’re in a somewhat stable mental place ajajjajajja. But these two were just… ugh. I usually despise insta-love with every inch of my being but it worked so well for these two I just- AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
Sophie x Gideon (Shadowhunters: Infernal Devices): These two I feel like are underrated in the fandom. Like, come on! In my personal opinion, they have the best love story in Shadowhunters. I’ve loved them since I was 9 and they are just so… they are just so good with each other? I love them. Every single moment of their relationship slaps.
Ron x Hermione (Harry Potter): They invented hesitant friends to friends to best friends to lovers. And they were done so wrong in the movies. Can anyone recommend me fics with them as the central focus? The Harry Potter part of AO3 is a fucking mess and I’ve found like two and I need more!
Luz x Amity / Hunter x Willow / Eda x Raine (The Owl House): How the fuck did a single show give me 3 new OTP’s? I’ve got no fucking idea but somehow they did it. I adore this show, I cannot wait for the finale. All the love stories are just… top tier just… wow. Lumity are the perfect enemies to lovers arc, Huntlow are just… so cute and perfect and of course we have Eda and Raine who are just iconic and IF I DON’T GET A KISS I AM GOING TO-
Wednesday x Tyler (Wednesday): COME AT ME BRO (please don’t), I love when people say they shouldn’t be together cause *SPOILERS* like… this is Wednesday Adams we’re talking about, if anything it makes it better! I love this ship. Their dynamic is just superior to me. Crazy x different kind of crazy? Perfection.
Charles Xavier x Erik (X-men): X-MEN WERE FUCKING COWARDS. That’s all I’ll say about that. I deserved so much better.
Rarity x Apple Jack (Equestria Girls): My fave sapphics, they were girlfriends. Farm girl x fashionista? Fucking genius. The aesthetics and dynamics are just perfect. The heavens open up and you can hear the choir when there’s a plot line revolving around their… ‘friendship’.
Nam-ra x Su-hyeok (All of us are dead): They are just… so fucking precious? He runs towards zombies to protect her and they are both crushing on each other from a distance, trying not to be obvious and it is so cute and so precious and just… I can’t wait for s2.
Stiles x Lydia (Teen Wolf): I’m not watching the movie. I refuse to. These two had 14 year old me in a choke hold.
Barry x Caitlin (The Flash): yes, I’m that person. Seasons 1-4 I still held on to hope. I love these two, just two nerds supporting each other and being THE team. This was truly so much potential.
Sarah x Leonard (Legends of Tomorrow): *sobs* they were just… so unexpected but they also made so much sense?
Hiccup x Astrid (How to Train Your Dragon): They were my obsession for a good while, Race to the Edge gave me way too much serotonin. I cried violently watching the last movie I just- they were so good. Their whole character development in Race to the Edge? Absolute fucking hold.
Winter x Jacin (The Lunar Chronicles): These two are just… childhood best friends to lovers, I’d kill and die for you, we know we love each other but we’ll never admit it and just be teaseful and then when they finally kiss it’s just so intense I was fucking fainting. I love them.
Dominick x Erika (Barbie, The Princess and the Pauper): They invented romance and they are the only insta-love love story that I will accept.
Robin x Regina (Once Upon a Time): I will die angry. Srly, they were just… perfect for each other? The definition of true love and they understood each other, Robin was so good for her and he believed so much in her and they loved each other in such a pure way and just… also they were just hot as fuck together I mean, they had me questioning my sexuality.
Starfire x Robin/Nightwing (Teen Titans/DC Comics/DC Movies): I don’t even know how to describe the amount of serotonin these two give me, they just make sense to me and I love them.
Kid Flash x Jinx (Teen Titans): They had 1 episode and they made history.
Artemis x Kid Flash (Young Justice): …I’m still waiting… fuck me… THEY WERE JUST SO FUCKING GOOD AAAAAAAHHHHHH- The way they annoyed each other but slowly grew to trust each other and then became friends and you can’t even pin point the exact moment they start falling in love because it just happens so naturally and so organically and it’s just- AAAAAHHHHHHHH
Impulse x Blue Beetle (Young Justice): Bart is in love with Jaimie and he is not subtle about it at all. Jaimie is a bit oblivious but you know that he is just as much in love if not even more
Jonathan x Nancy (Stranger Things): I swear yall’ if they really redo the triangle next season, I’m going to riot cause these two, their story is so well done in the first 3 seasons and it’s just like… what the fuck ya know?
Mike x Eleven (Stranger Things): I don’t care what anyone says, I still love them.
Lucas x Max (Stranger Things): …ow? I honestly don’t know what else to say.
Ben x Evie/Harry x Uma (Descendants): YOU KNOW I’M RIGHT, DID YOU WATCH CHILLIN LIKE A VILLAIN/WHAT’S MY NAME?! THE CHEMISTRY WAS LITERALLY DRIPPING OFF OF THEM. HE WAS SO HAPPY EVERYTIME HE SAW HER AND THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN GOLD TOGETHER.
Lucas x Maya (Girl Meets World): I am so tired… these two were just… so good together, the chemistry, the story line, Maya accepting the ‘bad’ side of Lucas in a way that Riley never did and him just being there for her no matter what ‘I could never hurt you’ I just… why?
Veronica x JD (Heathers the Musical): Listen… hear me out… I know that he was kinda crazy but… they were kind of an iconic duo okay? Freeze Your Brain? Dead Girl Walking? Our Love Is God? Seventeen? Meant to Be Yours? I Am Damaged? Sorry was I… not supposed to ship them after listening to those? I love them. I’m allowed to have at least one kinda-toxic-if-you-think-about-it-ship.
Juliette x Warner (Shatter Me): They created sexual tension. Every single scene slaps and their arc is just perfect and I love them and they are just… they are so intense but in the best way possible.

Deeply sorry for disturbing the Queen is dead fest🎉
But huntlow brainrot knows no time or place
One of things i like to imagine about them is how meanwhile both of them are aware of their feelings (not that the other likes-likes them but they do notice the affection directed at them) But due to circumstances they decide to stop thinking about it now, there are more important stuff!!
But the thing is both are extreme losers so each time they tell themselves "this is something i d do for each of my friends!" It very much is not
And thus Hunter reads many books about plant life (while daydreaming of discussing it and amazing willow with his knowledge), almost always takes the place next to willow if there s chance
And willow is very affectionate (shoulder touching/grabing hand when she s excited to show something etc), bringing snacks she knows he enjoys to their gravesfield history studies)
YEAH!!!!
This reminded me of something I think is really funny but don't see that much of in huntlow content. Willow being a complete loser for Hunter but like. Reluctantly? Melting against her will? Knowing she's being so very silly right now but unable to stop it?
Like when it comes to Lumity, Luz and Amity were already HUGE romantics even before they started dating so when mutual crush began, they dove the fuck in at full throttle.
But I like to imagine that Willow and Hunter just were not like that to begin with. They really ARE huge no nonsense "I need to focus on more important things" kind of people. (And maybe, just maybe, once they become a little more aware of their crush on each other, focusing on more important things also becomes somewhat of an excuse. Cuz feelings like this are unfamiliar territory and they're scared of tackling it head-on.)
Willow might have poured over romance novels when she was little but I see it as something she stopped doing as she got older and she deemed it "silly." (Let's not get into how part of the reason for that might have been her diminishing self worth and feeling like she can never be loved in that way or we'll be here all day.)
I could see her watching pre-relationship Luz and Amity being blushing messes around each other and trying to convince herself she is way too mature to ever behave like that. She's thinking "Could never be me. If I liked somebody, I would simply not be obvious about it."
Actually ma'am you are incorrect.
Hunter too. Like scouts being annoying about their crushes while on a mission and Hunter rolling his eyes like "There is no way a single person on the Boiling Isles could ever make me act so undignified."
ACTUALLY SIR YOU ARE INCORRECT.
And now they're both kinda kicking themselves for how they're feeling and how their brains are practically soup rn.
But it's FINE they're FINE, they're both just like "Nobody needs to know. I can hide it. I can totally hide it. I will be so good at hiding it."
Hunter most definitely is not good at hiding it, but he thinks he is. Yes, he is Willow's friend so of course he wants to do things that make her happy. So obviously he's gonna memorise passages from the encyclopedia chapter on her favourite carnivorous plants so he can recite them casually during conversation and her eyes will light up with delight and she'll burst into babbling about it. And he'll be able to keep up with her and impress her with how much info he's soaked up. This is a normal friend thing. He's a good friend, get off his back.
Willow is very touchy and affectionate with all her friends so she's a little bit more subtle. Patting his shoulder, hugs, linking arms with him, holding his hands. These are all things she does with Luz, Gus and Amity so it's not all that weird. But she gets so comfortable with the freedom of touching him ("Nobody's gonna know.") that she begins getting carried away and taking it much further than she does with her other friends. Miss Park why did you just cup Hunter's cheeks in your hands and smile at him like he holds the moon? Why did you say "Hi Hunter " so very softly? Why did you take his hands in yours and then gently stroke your thumb across his skin? Why did you stand up on your tiptoes to thread your fingers through his hair because "wow it's kinda messy. Let me fix it for ya." Miss Park?? Miss Park get back here I want answers.
Anyway as time goes on, Willow gets a little lost in the sauce when it comes to her affection for Hunter. But it makes her so dopey that she just?? Doesn't notice she's doing it?? So she's so convinced that's shes being so low-key about her crush on him and nobody is the wiser.
She's definitely trying very hard to keep her crush in her head and not to let it leak out into the real world. Because, again, she's pretty adverse to schmaltzy stuff because it's a kind of weakness she doesn't want to reveal. But now she's out here getting absorbed in her thoughts and when she comes back to reality she's written Hunter's name all over her notebook and she's just like "FUCK!! SHIT!! FUCK!!"
Hunter, meanwhile, is going through the photos the group has taken while in the Human Realm and he finds one of just Willow alone sitting on a swingset and grinning at the camera. And he thinks to himself "I could...I could hold on to this." Which just sends him crashing back to the memory of that one scout he knew who talked about keeping a photo of his girlfriend under his pillow. And Hunter's skin nearly melts off from the fiery heat of his blush. FUCK!! SHIT!! FUCK!! He really is no better is he? He's gotta get this under control or she's gonna find out.
Basically Willow and Hunter being like "I am being SO normal right now" while literally bursting at the seams. Miss Park, we see you twirling your hair, Mr Hunter we see you fuckinf giggling. Please for the love of God get a hold of yourselves.

iiiiiit's Lumity hours y'all and my brain is rotting from the sweet fluff that is cute and authentically written queer couples right now!
so my headcanon is that Luz isn't 'dumb' or 'dense' or 'oblivious' for not recognizing Amity's crush on her until they both cross the threshold of reciprocated romantic affection. My headcanon is that Luz can recognize social cues, sarcasm, body language, etc. when it's used on other people FROM other people (hence why she knew Huntlow was a thing when they returned back to BL in S3)... it's just that she can't recognize those same things when they're used on her.
And another part of it is she's probably been rejected from so many relationships by her peers due to her neurodivergence, so she's adopted the mindset of 'people don't really like me, and even when they do they only just tolerate me' and is genuinely surprised when she learns that "oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh Amity actually LOVES me romantically and wants to commit to a relationship to me as?? *checks notes* as... G-GIRLFRIENDS!? She LOVES me? ME, of all people? Sounds fake imo but k-" Like, I guarantee you she was the kid who got fake 'asked out' as a practical joke played on her by her peers because "haha dumb nerd kid nobody will ever love you" and Amity straight pulled out a powerpoint slideshow and said "here's 100 reasons why you're deadass w r o n g b i t c h"
