#and in place of the chung myung we see

Just saw a picture of divine dragon chung myung before he got that title and it really hit me how small Cho Sam's body was when chung myung came back. This little thought has spoilers for chapter 400+ (I think anyway) and vague spoilers for everything past ch 400 until like. Ch 800
GOD OK so we as the reader understand chung myungs situation very very intimately. WE understand that he is an 80+ year old man mentally. WE understand that he is not in fact 15, then 17, then 19, 20, etc. Everyone around him, however, truly believe that he is those ages.
It's brushed upon multiple times throughout the novel, especially whenever chung myung is down for the count/recovering after a fight. The facade he makes around himself, the strong reliable leader, fades away and the "truth" of who he is reinstates itself to those close to him in this second life. His back, every time he wavers, is described as small. This is always through the perspective of anyone but himself. This is even more apparent whenever he is unconscious after a serious fight. I don't know exactly chapters, but i KNOW that baek cheon (and the rest of the 5 swords plus soso and hye yeon), at least once, has had the reality of Chung myungs apparent age dawn upon them. That they're youngest sajae (sahyung in soso's case) is constantly spilling his own blood to protect them. (This fact is straight up said by yu iseol after the particularly bad fight with Jang ilso, spitting her frustration with only getting in chung myungs way instead of protecting him).
This phenomenon is hardly limited to the main group of disciples. After the first myriad men siege on Mount hua (while The Gang is in Xian), everyone subconsciously gains courage with the thought that soon enough chung myung will come, that he'll protect them. The disciples (soso being the most prevalent since she's one of the main disciples focused on in the novel) of course correct this thought, realizing that they cannot rely on chung myung forever. Anyways moving on from just describing this arc. What I mainly want to focus on is Hyun jong and chung myungs interaction AFTER the siege is finished, after un gum is fresh off of his amputation, after chung myung has barely gotten treatment for his own (quite serious) injuries.
What do you think when through Hyun jong's mind, seeing his youngest disciple, the one who brought back the hope that had almost died out with his sect, ruthlessly kill the enemy, return heavily wounded, and then try to sneak out almost immediately to go back to smite those who have harmed his home? To us, Chung myung is more than capable. He's the plum blossom sword Saint, the one who (even with all the regret he holds over this) severed the head of the heavenly demon. He's an 80+ year old man trying to protect the only thing besides bloodshed that is familiar in this second life. We understand the guilt he has over not being able to protect his home the first time. We understand that he would rather die than allow Mount Hua to fall again.
Hyun jong does not know this. He does not understand chung myungs rage (and guilt and grief and longing and-). He looks at chung myung and sees an 18 or 19 (I don't remember) year old boy, covered in wounds, trying to sneak out of his home on a suicide mission of revenge. He sees a boy. He knows that if he let's this boy go, he will never see him alive again. So he uses chung myungs borderline (who are we kidding, it is way past borderline) unhealthy loyalty with mount hua to dissuade him from walking to his death.
ANYWAYS long story not so short, I need need need more analysis over what everyone but chung myung thinks about him. Everyone sees this young teen, then young adult, bend over backwards to the point where he has almost died so so so many times just so mount hua can flourish. They've seen him kill ruthlessly, they've seen him sob over the skeleton of an ancestor (one of his brothers, a reminder of what he has lost, what he will never get back), they've seen him silly and carefree, they've seen him almost mad with bloodlust.
To us, he is chung myung, the old plum blossom sword Saint, slayer of the heavenly demon. To them, he is chung myung, the scrawny 15 year old that changed their lives, that faces unknown traumas, that has had a life so, so unkind to him.
Sometimes I look at chung myung pre time skip, how small he is, how he looks like a child, how he acts nothing like one, and remember that only we, the readers, get the full context behind his actions.

straight and thumping on the ground impatiently. fast rhythm beat with 0.95-second intervals.
—and with that crease between his eyebrows, pout so evident in his lips, eyes boring through the side of your head. there’s no need to turn front to see the literal dragon of mount hua is displeased at the slow pace of his order shīzitóu. it’s not like you can afford to flat-out be rude to the half-huili jing server eagerly asking for more affirmations about their restaurant’s food. goodness, you’re not chung myung…
“the sauce? is it sweet enough? or perhaps you like it sticky…” the half huili jing server’s voice lowered in a purr. “..daozhang?”
you’re about to correct the server when a sarcastic, gruff voice enters the conversation. “no, they don’t like sweets that much and they prefer thin consistency sauce to sticky.”
speaking of, your companion finally spoke up. the entire time chung myung is either grunting or clicking his tongue to respond as you put out the orders on the menu. you wanted to let out a heavy sigh but held it in. he spoke up but at what cost?
chung myung tapped his palm on the table a little bit too hard. “put the shīzitóu down. that’s what i ordered.”
faced with the natural hierarchy’s top one, how could a huili jing fight against a dragon? even more to a half huili jing? with a graceful movement, the half huili jing set out the tray full of appetizing meals rich in different flavours and seasonings.
the silence was too loud despite the busy chatter heard outside the private room and so, once the sulky half huili jing strolled away, you picked up the chopstick, ready to eat. that’s how you and chung myung spent the rest of the evening with occasional banters, two unfilled cups holding beads of alcohol, and an abandoned bottle of peach baijiu in the side.
moves languidly
the elders and the youths alike have watched a certain senior-junior pair dance around with each other. be it when they are younger than they are now—the plum blossoms in winter’s seasonal bloom and summer’s jovial heat sighing at the young man finding himself to get the point across and you dodging every little thing almost nil. the terrified junior brothers betting on who will try to make a move first.
so far the winning score is on those who placed bets on chung myung’s side…
a group of junior brothers set aside their lunch once they saw the two together with the taller one carrying a box with decorative materials for the spring festival and the other having a ladder.
you propped the ladder to the wall and started climbing on it while chung myung set the box down.
“will the elder make a move?”
“shush.”
“come on, shixiong. he is right. how about we bet if the elder makes a move on them this time?” junior brother lu nodded to the oblivious pair. he pushed his lunch forward, “i’ll bet my lunch set a, elder chung myung will make a move.”
junior brother ming, the shixiong, responded dryly. “i’ll bet mine he will not.”
“i’m with brother lu!”
“shixiong, you can’t possibly think elder will not when you also saw him–”
“watch.”
“huh?” instinctively, junior brother lu inclined his head just to see you playing with the ends of the red lantern for the spring festival, let it brush to your senior’s nose as chung myung sneezed. sending you a harmless glare as you laugh loudly. elder chung myung may be directing witty remarks to you but this little junior brother lu can see the tail of the elder languidly swishing behind him.
he sighs and thinks, elder chung myung is almost never too honest and yet his tail is saying otherwise.
wiggles in excitement
a new series of tomorrow awaits as the booming fireworks line up to the dark skies, below were the firecrackers noisy and frizzled. the sect adorned in red lanterns and spring couplets can be seen hanging on the doors. the disciples of mount hua gather all around in different places; some are in the dining hall, some are burning bamboo sticks and firecrackers, laughter fills up the festive mood, and some are watching the abundant glowing light flutters seen above to the lowered ground.
a single stick fell out from the fortune shaker.
you stare at it, losing interest in picking it up as each second passes by until the black-clad swordsman nudges you with his shoulder in a bump, snickering. “will you look at that.”
you can’t believe the gods had decided to be mean to you on the eve of the spring festival. the harmonious atmosphere feels like mocking you as the fortune stick reads ‘misfortune.’
then you shove the stick back into the cylinder, shake it violently, a stick falls out and you’re miniscule away throwing away the damn fortune shaker. tsk, should’ve known it’s a sham.
chung myung clutches his stomach from too much hysterical fits as he then grabs one of your hands that was choking the cylinder. surprised at his gentle touch, chung myung easily slides his fingers between the gaps of yours as his stare pins at you with a gaze swirling playful pink billows, night light kissed skin. suddenly, peering up into him through the shadows settled by the moon feels intimate as the two of you sit on the rooftop.
“there,” he whispered. “i’m sharing half of my great fortune with you.”
you swallowed thickly, wanting to squeeze your heart to shut up.
a comical exclaim escapes out of you, shiny eyes admiring him, “gege!”
chung myung reacts to your address with a sudden burst of triumph. his tail wags frantically, displaying his excitement. hearing you calling him 'gege' has clearly delighted him, and he seems eager to engage whatever his mind is scheming.

═══════════════
so you've gotten yourself trapped in an upright box with the resident pretty boy of your sect you had been seeing for a while.
my congratulations, or my condolences. whichever you prefer.
how you two came to this predicament is none of your concern right now. all your mind could think of was how his chest on your back felt so nice and warm. not to mention how soft it was, surprisingly enough. you unconsciously step back, wanting to feel that soft warmth a little more.
please... don't move so much...
baek cheon pleads, whimpering.
he tried to move away from you, trying his best to think of anything other than your body being so close to his own at that moment. or how his dick had been growing harder with his groin pressed against your bottom. he hoped you were too dense to notice.
unfortunately, the uniform you wore wasn't thick enough to hide his erection resting on your ass.
shouldn't we do something about this?
you finally ask face turned away from him, hiding your embarrassingly excited face. you little pervert.
is that an offer? or a suggestion?
which would you prefer?
he pauses for a moment.
i'll take that as an offer from you.
he leans down, nuzzling against the crook of your neck, hands resting on your hips. he doesn't move — much less breathe or let out a sound, waiting for a green light to do so from you.
what are you stalling for?
please tell me what to do.
he says, he turns you to face him, pushing your back flat on the wall as he falls to his knees at your feet. face resting on your lower tummy and hands ghosting the back of your thighs. his murmuring voice sent shivering vibrations straight to your core.
knowing that your voice would reveal your wonton desires, you run your fingers into his dark locks, grabbing it by the fistful as you push his face downwards — closer to where you wanted him to be.
it was good that he understood quickly. ridding you of your pants and underwear. your knees are lifted, they go over his shoulders and rest on them as his face dives closer to your heated cunt.
you look down to see his nose bumping against your clit, you couldn't see it as well, but his lips move to place feathery kisses over your fluttering hole, dripping in more and more of your slick.
the cause. which was it?
your unrestricted neediness or baek cheon's clumsy expertise? or was it both? it was probably both.
for all his lack of technique, he made up for in eagerness. your every twitch and sigh at his ministrations were his fuel to keep on going and going and going until he felt your thighs shake and close around his head. your hands dig into his hair, nails scratching on his scalp a little harshly as you push his pretty face deeper. his rough hands pin your hips to the walls of your enclosure, it's unpolished surface scratched against your now bare back painfully. the top of your sect uniform had fallen over your shoulders and exposed your binded chest — but even that was slowly loosening, showing more and more of that soft, plush skin.
looking up at you through his half-lidded eyes, baek cheon had to admit this sight of you was utterly sinful. the fact that he was the only one to have the honour of seeing you come undone all over his lips and tongue. he laps at your pulsing entrance, drinking in every drop you released like a parched man in a desert who hasn't seen a sliver of water in years.
the air in the box was getting warmer, the heat gradually growing into a boiling point. the thin sheen of sweat on your skin the evidence.
you felt dazed, all your senses were dulled down to focus on the tightening coil in your abdomen prepping for another release. how many times does this make? four... no, five?
at this rate, you might even pass out before he decides to shove his cock inside.
cheon-ah...
you call out, pushing his face away from your cunt. he had drunken look on his face, his lips a little swollen and his chin wet from how long it had been buried between your legs.
huh?
cheon-ah... in... i want...
you stumbled over your words, feeling embarrassed from having to say things out loud. sure he's eating you out like no tomorrow but asking to fuck you raw was still too bold!
are you asking for this?
he drops you onto his lap, you squealed from the sudden action with your knees still hanging over his shoulders as you folded in half, bare chest pressing on your thighs. baek cheon grinds upwards feeling your wetness get on his clothed crotch.
you gasp at the sensation, still reeling from sensitivity in the aftermath of his ministrations. you feel your legs tremble — if he kept grinding up on you like this...!
he stops.
you whine desperately, bringing your face closer to his, trying to pepper it in kisses just so he'd continue.
you said you wanted it inside.
baek cheon chuckles at your attempts, gingerly lifting your legs off his shoulders to set them back on either side of his hips.
be more patient. let's get you out of these.
his finger tugs at your belt, still tied securely around your waist and holding onto your robes that had fallen off long ago. it unravels quickly, and baek cheon tosses your clothes aside.
you look at him, the gaps in the box you both were in let in enough light to see that he wasn't as much of a mess as you'd thought he would. aside from his missing forehead ribbon and dishevelled hair, everything else in his attire was still in its place.
god, this was so annoying.
his notices that your movements stilled, following your gaze he sees that you've balled your fist on his chest — the fabric of his uniform peaking through your fingers gripping on it tightly.
you want this off?
baek cheon asked, smiling giddily as you nodded. he makes quick work of undressing himself, keeping you occupied as he leans over to kiss you. his mouth on yours felt feverishly hot, the sighs let out in between each time you parted from each other had the hair on your skin stand in anticipation.
his hands rest on your knees, spreading your legs further apart as his lips go from kissing your own down your jaw and on your chin. he drags his teeth down your neck, sending ticklish shivers down your spine. his hands travel up your thighs, slowly, tugging his thumb on your skin. his nibbles on your collarbones and shoulders, humming contentedly as your hands leave long red lines of scratches on his back and arms. you feel him move down to kiss your chest sucking on the flesh enough to leave darker marks on them.
his hands didn't stop even when he reached your hips. he traced his fingers all over your body — pinching, caressing and tugging on the sensitive parts of your skin, or wherever he could reach in this tight space. combine this with all his heated kisses, you felt like you were almost at your limit, and yet you kept holding on because you still hadn't gotten what you wanted.
wrap your legs around me, i'm going to stand up.
he says this with a chaste kiss to your cheek. hooking his arms under your knees, hands supporting your bottom, he lifts you up along with him and doesn't even break a sweat.
you gasp in surprise, and he shushes you with a flurry of pecks. you found yourself gradually relaxing in his arms, his thumb running soothing circles on your skin.
he leans back on the wall, breaking away from the kiss with a thin line of saliva. he rests your forehead on his, catching his breath.
do you still want this?
with a nervous, shaky voice he asks you.
you nod.
really?
you nod again.
if you feel like you don't want to anymore, i can...
cheon-ah, how many times do you want me to say yes?
you giggle at his astounded face, and he soon laughs alongside you. you kiss him, cupping his face, assuring him quietly as he gently brings you down on him.
neither of you have ever done anything like this before, the feeling of him inside you and your warmth enveloping him was so, so foreign. his mind draws a blank, genuinely not knowing what he should do next other than to hold you closer.
cheon-ah... move... please?
he listens to you, as he always did, lifting you up and back down again. his hips bucking up to meet yours, skin slapping against skin, the quiet squelch of his dick covered in your essence pushing and pulling, in and out of your quivering hole. soft gasps and moans filled the space around you, nothing else other than the peak of your highs mattered at that moment.
groaning, baek cheon presses your knees into your chest, pinning you against the wall. this new angle had you seeing stars every time the dull tip of his cock brushed on your sensitive cervix. your clit rubbed against his groin, the hairs covering both your nether regions adding to the friction you felt. your soft, spongy and wet walls clamped down on him so hard that it might as well be you sucking him dry inside.
in a moment of clarity, you feel him twitching. you didn't need any experience to know that he was close, and your legs instinctively wrapped around his waist. heels digging into his lower back as you push him deep into your soaking cunt.
he thrusts upwards a few more times before you felt his cum spilling inside. his voice reduced to incoherent babbles as he mindlessly pressed his lips on your heated skin. he was still not done, his release eventually dripping out of you and onto the floor.
you kiss and play with his hair as you both slowly came down from your highs, you share a bashful smile. hearts still racing from the intensity of the events that just transpired.
that aside, how were you two getting out of this box?

idk if ur like open to randos in ur asks giving u media recommendations, but i would give anything in the world for u to try and give the k-novel 'return of the blossoming blade' by BIGA a chance... UR MY FAVE CONTENT CREATOR SINCE THE YE OLDEN TGCFMDZS DAYS SO I WANTED TO AT LEAST TRY LOLLL its like my favourite novel of all time and ive been trying to force it upon everyone with little avail, which i dont understand WHYY cuz its SOO GOOOD like it definitely deserves to have the same level of popularity w international fans as MDZS and TGCF had, but for now it remains a hidden gem.......... it's an insanely long novel i will nawt lie (1.5k+ chapters and updating everyday but only like 500smth have been tl'd into english on the fantl site Sky Demon Order[who also post semi-daily]) but its sosososo worth it i prommy..trust me..:smiles: it's a classic 'hero from the past who died a tragic and preventable(?) death reincarnates a hundred years into the future hiding his identity to teach the youth in order to keep the future generation from following in his footsteps and making the same mistakes he did' but without all the stale, predictable, boringness u'd typically expect from that specific genre... it's an incredibly comedic action novel that takes place in ancient china wuxia setting & focuses primarily on found family and those close familial bonds between the main cast behind all the sword fighty action (dont know how to fit this in anywhere else, but its important to me that u know the mc, chung myung, is the main casts grandpa.. hes their peepaw.. he shows affection by beating them on their heads). theres no romance at all, but i would argue that is a SELLING POINT for this novel like i swear it is so refreshing, the found family of it all means soo much to me, so much so i am now going to force it to mean so much to you too(this is a threat).... if u do gaf abt ships tho then maybe the doomed, tragic, best-friends-to-almost lovers tangchung yaoi and the love at first sight iseolsoso yuri might catch ur eye *LOOKS AT YOU* i genuinely really really feel like it would be straight up ur alley, like its definitely smth i feel would at least peak ur interest imo (chung myung, the mc, is probably my fave mc of all time..at eighty two years young, he IS the next peoples princess and i want to hit him with my car and then nurse him back to health just to hit him again.. i feel like u'd enjoy him like that as well).. im so desperate for more eng fans of this novel u cant see me rn but i am biting into a leather belt trying not to sob and cry out loud as im typing this this is so long im so embarrawsed so ill leave u here.. i hope my pleas have touched ur heart in some way and if the novel chapter count is too intimidating, ROTBB also has a webcomic on webtoons by the same name (season two of the webcomic just started ^__^ ) and the art is so good and funny and its a good way to get into the novel without being overwhelmed by the chp count methinks BUT i would definitely consider reading the novel mandatory cuz the webcomic only fills u in on so much.... ok. i hope u managed to get thru this insane wall of text, my bad.. until we meet again...*salutes* *revs up my motorcycle and disappears behind a cloud of smoke but when the dust settles i am laying dead on the floor*
ok so first of all i respect this so much 🫡 thank you for spreading your passion in the final moments before your motorcycle dirt death 🫡🫡🫡
second of all this does sound really fun !!! i have found it on sky demon order and i'll give it a try... BUT i gotta be real over a thousand chapters and only two hundred of them translated AND no romance is unfortunately killing me... i just dont know if i have the stamina for that... im a horrible little fujo if its THAT long theres gotta be some kissing!!!!! sorry 😭😭
for u i will give it a try but i can make no promises 🫡 i will consider chung myung my blorbo in law tho

Hotel del Luna: Analysing Episode 14
Earlier this year I wrote a review on my favourite kdrama thus far, Hotel del Luna. It was somewhat long yet not long enough, as I felt I could write a lot more on the subject. In particular, one of the things I pointed out in the closing to my review is how I wasn’t entirely sold on the way the Hong sisters handled the riddle of Chan Sung’s dreams and the mystery of his identity. In this post I will attempt to explain why that is by analysing Episode 14, the episode where Chan Sung’s dreams and the mystery of his identity finally converge, and see where it leads me. Needless to say, there will be lots of spoilers so proceed at your own risk.
Tumblr media
Background
As early as the ending of Episode 2 Chan Sung has been dreaming about Man Wol’s past, something that visibly shakes her when he reveals this at the end of Episode 3, raising worrisome doubts about his identity. Chan Sung himself admits, upon questioning, that maybe he knew Man Wol in some past life he can’t remember and the show presents us with two possible candidates: Go Chung Myung, Princess Song Hwa’s Captain of the Guards and Man Wol’s boyfriend; and Yeon Wu, Man Wol’s brother. There is a particularly poignant scene in Episode 5 when, recalling the memory of Yeon Wu, Man Wol sadly declares, “Yeon Wu… He was the person who loved me the most in the world. Gu Chan Sung, do you love me?” It is Chan Sung’s turn to be taken aback by the sudden question and he’s somehow able to retain enough composure to reply, “It’s clear that I’m not him,” positively dodging such a loaded question.
Tumblr media
Troubled by this specter of the past threatening to arise, Man Wol continues to put it out of her mind, gradually developing feelings for Gu Chan Sung, who also clearly reciprocates them as established in yet another beautiful scene, this time from Episode 6. At the end of the episode, Chan Sung joins Man Wol at the hotel’s beach (yes, that is not a mistake) and gifts her Kim Joon Hyeon’s autograph, an indirect confession of love that Man Wol very much appreciates and responds to with a declaration of her own, “It’s alright, because you’re here.” (Video) But fate (coughMaGoShincough) won’t let her escape her past so easily and so it is that Man Wol is confronted at the end of Episode 7 with the appearance of Chan Sung’s former girlfriend, who is the spitting image of Princess Song Hwa, the woman responsible for executing Man Wol’s brother and fellow countrymen. This time around, the question of Chan Sung’s connection to Man Wol is overshadowed by her hatred for the woman who killed the people she loved, but is still present, I believe, in her actions.
youtube
At the end of Episode 8, having indirectly placed a curse on Chan Sung, one that evidently caused him pain, we see Man Wol, perhaps for the first time, renounce revenge for the sake of love. After lifting the curse, Man Wol bids farewell to Chan Sung hoping to protect him in so doing. While her intentions are clear one must wonder whether Man Wol wasn’t also protecting herself, running away from the question she avoided earlier in the show, the one that continues to rear its ugly head… What is her connection to Gu Chan Sung? This question is narrowed further in Episode 10 when she encounters the reincarnation of Yeon Wu in the form of Detective Park Young Soo. While Man Wol won’t pose herself this disturbing question until Episode 14 the viewers were certainly pondering, “Could Chan Sung be the reincarnation of Chung Myung? Could the man she loves be the reincarnation of the person she hates?” And it’s in Episode 14 where the show made a choice that at first glance appears questionable, it categorically and resolutely replied, “No, he’s not.”
The will of a Goddess
Tumblr media
Throughout the show the audience has been shown hints, left bread crumbs, that maybe Gu Chan Sung is not the reincarnation of Chung Myung, that maybe Chung Myung reincarnated as something else. To be fair, the reverse is also true, as the show has purposefully toyed with the possibility that Chan Sung might be someone from Man Wol’s past. However, if any viewer was still in doubt, Episode 14 puts the nail on that particular coffin. It is clear from the onset of the episode that Chung Myung reincarnated into a firefly, the very same firefly that refused to go into the afterlife at the end of Episode 1, instead choosing to fulfill his promise to Man Wol and remain by her side. Goddess Ma Go herself indirectly acknowledges this when she says, “It seems Man Wol will get seriously swayed by this small and green light.”
Curiously though, Ma Go Shin does not reveal this to Man Wol when she meets her moments later. Instead, she capitalizes on her confusion by being purposefully ambiguous, “Jang Man Wol, why are you just leaving? Will you let him just pass by, pretending to be clueless? You can’t run away from it. That person has already been by your side.” These words are like daggers to Man Wol’s heart, who can’t help but think her worst fears have come true, Chan Sung, the man she loves, is the reincarnation of Chung Myung, the man she hates. The anguished look on Man Wol’s face speaks volumes and Ma Go Shin delivers the final blow in the form of a bloodied hair pin, the very same one described to her by Chan Sung, straight from his dreams, “I saw that man, Chung Myung. In his hand he had a hair ornament with your symbol in the shape of the moon.”
Tumblr media
It is important to note that up to this point everything in Chan Sung’s dreams was something Man Wol could account for, but the hair pin is something she didn’t know about as Chung Myung never got the chance to give it to her. Thus, to her, the fact that the Goddess Ma Go is handing her this bloodied hair pin is the final confirmation that Chan Sung is Chung Myung, so she can’t help but ask the question she has been avoiding for so long, “Is it Gu Chan Sung?” Ma Go Shin’s response cuts to the heart of the matter, “If it is Gu Chan Sung, can you accept him?” This is precisely why Ma Go Shin, while not lying, is deliberately misleading Man Wol into thinking Chung Myung and Chan Sung are one and the same, making her choose between her hatred and her love, “I’m also curious about what you see there. Whether you see Go Chung Myung and extinguish yourself or see Gu Chan Sung and receive redemption, that’s your choice.” If Ma Go Shin were to reveal that Chan Sung is not Chung Myung, it would be that much harder for Man Wol to finally let go of her anger and peacefully leave for the afterlife as is the Goddess’ will, “That hatred that you’ve continuously held onto all this time, why don’t you let go of it with the love you’ve received at the end of this long time?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Ma Go Shin’s actions are thus explained a new question arises, why did the show choose to let the audience in on the fact that Chan Sung was not Chung Myung at this point in the episode? Usually, shows or movies that have this type of plot line try to keep the viewer in the dark for as long as possible. Given that the truth is revealed three episodes before the end (some viewers might have guessed it even earlier) one could make the case that the show had kept the mystery long enough. Alternatively, it could more definitely be argued that the actual reveal takes place later in the episode, during an encounter between Gu Chan Sung and Ma Go Shin at the pharmacy. In any event, just like Goddess Ma Go carefully chose her words to Man Wol, the show could’ve slightly altered the episode’s editing to keep us, just like Man Wol, guessing Chan Sung’s identity until the very last minute. This would have, to my mind, increased the episode’s rewatchability, adding a layer that can only be discovered and reinterpreted once Chan Sung’s (not) identity is revealed. Why, then, did the show decide against this course of action? Let’s put a hold on that particular question and address some of the other questions that arise from watching this episode.
The return of evil Man Wol?
Upon “learning” from Goddess Ma Go that Chan Sung is Chung Myung we’re treated to that famously deceptive scene where we witness Man Wol (incorrectly) putting together the clues and, in a fit of impulsiveness, stab Gu Chan Sung, only to immediately regret it (IU’s acting is superb here, watch her eyes).
youtube
While this was merely a scenario playing inside her head it frightens her enough to take action, “I can never kill Gu Chan Sung. Ma Go Shin told me that I have to completely empty myself. I have to think about how I’m going to empty myself.” Man Wol’s way of “emptying herself” appears to be a bit literal. She creates an image of her past self that contains all of her hatred and binds her to the hair pin, which she eventually hands to Seol Ji Won’s ghost, who becomes more powerful as a result and is, if anything, more determined to go after Chan Sung now. Is Man Wol purposefully putting Chan Sung in danger after all they’ve been through just because she thinks he’s Chung Myung? This is her reply, “Ma Go Shin said that you’re that man. I have to kill you but I can’t. Because I like you too much. But I’m not going to protect you either. I’ve been waiting over 1000 years to kill you. If I were to protect you now, the resentment I’ve held would become a joke.”
Tumblr media
The short answer is no, she’s not; she’s still protecting Chan Sung like she always has. Someone as smart as Man Wol would’ve known that, as the Grim Reaper reminds her, she will dissipate should Seol Ji Won kill a human with his newfound power. She readily admits this is precisely the outcome she’s looking for, much to Gu Chan Sung’s surprise and dismay. In order to protect Chan Sung from the possibility that she might harm him, Man Wol has decided to remove herself from the equation by calling upon the judging side of the Goddess. Her words to Chan Sung are intended to distance herself from him and he from her so he won’t be as affected by what’s to come. The real truth lies in the conversation she had moments earlier with her (past) self, “I, even though it is humorous, have fallen in love again. I was trying to pretend not to know you by relying on that love. But memories of you are dragging me down to the bottom again.” Man Wol has finally acknowledged that she has been, in fact, running away from her past all along. It’s what she did in Episode 4, when she joined the hotel’s staff in their scheme to drive Chan Sung mad, it’s what she did in Episode 8 when she left him, and it’s exactly what she’s doing now trying to extinguish herself through a proxy. Her words to Chan Sung in Episode 8 come to mind, “What I have is hell. Experiencing hell together isn’t better.” She even recognises that Chan Sung won’t come to harm as a result of her plan, “Since you’re a human that the Grandmothers adore they’ll take action before the vengeful ghost kills you.” This is, and has always been, a plan with only one intended casualty, Jang Man Wol herself. Well, two, if you count Seol Ji Won.
Chan Sung makes a play for Man Wol’s soul
If we’ve come to know Gu Chan Sung at all after 13 episodes, we can rest assured he won’t just let Man Wol vanish without putting up a fight. Indeed, the very next thing he does is run to the pharmacy where he confronts Goddess Ma Go and asks her whether he really is Go Chung Myung. Here, at last, the Goddess is crystal clear in her reply, “There’s no way my unni said those exact words. Because that man is right here,” pointing at a jar containing a single firefly. Ma Go Shin even goes so far as to tell Chan Sung exactly what he should do next to prevent Man Wol from vanishing: recover the bloodied hair pin she gave to Seol Ji Won, something Chan Sung is able to accomplish in the nick of time. These events converge in Chan Sung’s vision from Episode 9 (shown in full at the beginning of Episode 10), where Man Wol is standing before the judging face of the Goddess, in the garden of the moon tree, waiting to be extinguished.
Tumblr media
Several viewers have been puzzled by Chan Sung’s actions here, namely why he didn’t simply tell Man Wol that he wasn’t Go Chung Myung. It is a fair question and I believe the same answer that applies to Ma Go Shin applies to Gu Chan Sung: he withheld that information in order to make her choose. When Chan Sung shows the hair pin to Ma Go Shin, asking (more like demanding) her to leave, Man Wol desperately insists on being extinguished. It is clear, certainly to Chan Sung by that point, that Man Wol does not trust herself not to harm him, believing him to be Chung Myung. While Chan Sung could easily correct her on that point and thus ensure his safety (and hers, temporarily) he is more concerned about Man Wol making the right choice and peacefully going into the afterlife. Has he realized, like Ma Go Shin before him, that in order to save Man Wol’s soul he must put himself in her way one last time? I am reminded of Ma Go Shin’s words to Chan Sung in Episode 9, “It’s cool when you’re taking her side. And being in the way is uncool. The role of being cool and holding her, consoling her, anyone would want to do that role. The role of holding her back and hanging onto her and becoming uncool is something only a good person can do.” It would appear Chan Sung has arrived at the same conclusion given his bold statement to Man Wol, as he hands her the bloodied hair pin turned knife, “Alright, then do that. If you must be in that hell, then I’ll also go in there. I’ll become that man for you. Kill me.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is worth drawing a parallel here to Man Wol’s final encounter with Chung Myung. At that time, she had him at the tip of her blade, just like Chan Sung is now at her mercy, the difference being that Chung Myung made the decision for her then and Chan Sung is now handing back that decision to her. I don’t believe it is a stretch to say Chung Myung, ironically, robbed her of the closure she’s getting now, thousands of years later. It also speaks volumes of Chan Sung’s trust on Man Wol, even in her darkest moments when she’s unable to trust herself. As foreseen by the Goddess who deliberately put him on Man Wol’s path, Chan Sung is the only one who can make Man Wol confront her past, the only one for whom she’ll willingly abandon her thousand-year-old hatred for the sake of the love she’s received at the end of her journey.
Tumblr media
The final question and conclusion
You may have astutely noticed I have so far managed to avoid answering the question I introduced earlier, “Why didn’t the show make us doubt Gu Chan Sung’s identity until the last possible second, just like Man Wol?” Why didn’t they keep us guessing a little longer? After all, it could’ve been done easily with some slight editing of Episode 14. By doing so, the audience would’ve been emotionally involved until the last moment instead of wondering why Chan Sung isn’t telling Man Wol the truth, a question that, to my mind, takes the audience out of the show, if only momentarily.
Tumblr media
After pondering the question for a long while (I definitely didn’t have this answer when I wrote my review) it occurs to me that perhaps this was done out of a desire to remain consistent and true to Gu Chan Sung’s purpose as a viewpoint character. Gu Chan Sung has been our conduit throughout the show, the person who introduces us to this world of gods, ghost, and souls, and reacts possibly just as we would under those circumstances. We learn about this world through Gu Chan Sung. Granted, we tend to know a good deal more than him given our role as the audience but, as far as I can tell and here’s the gist of it, we never know less than he does. In order to deceive the audience into thinking Chan Sung might be Chung Myung it would’ve been necessary to either have him withhold information from us or deceive him as well. The former changes his function as a viewpoint character while the latter goes against his established bond of trust and honesty with Ma Go Shin. I can’t recall a single instance where Ma Go Shin tried to deceive Gu Chan Sung or didn’t reply clearly to his questions. And why would she? After all, Gu Chan Sung is the messenger she chose to, in her own words, “open the door a little” for Man Wol.
Think about how much more meaningful Chan Sung’s act of handing the knife to Man Wol is because it’s informed by the fact that he knows he’s not Chung Myung. If he hadn’t known that, if we hadn’t known that, the significance of this scene changes entirely and subverts the sacrifice that lies at its core. I’d like to think either the Hong sisters, or the director, or both, wanted the audience to be clear about the identity of the man who comes to Man Wol’s rescue in her darkest hour by his willingness to perform the ultimate act of love. What’s a little mystery next to that?
So maybe I was wrong. Maybe the Hong sisters handled the mystery of Chan Sung’s identity better than I originally gave them credit for, and that’s the main reason why I love this show. Unlike any of the hotel’s guests, we can come back to Hotel del Luna again and again to peel back its layers, open a door to one of its many strange rooms, and find something there we previously hadn’t realised. Therein, I believe, also lies the magic of Hotel del Luna.

Sun Myung Moon, a mysterious romance, a stolen lover – and a triple murder.
The Tragedy of the Six Marys, pages 161-172
by Pak Chung-hwa
Kim Won-deok graduated from Japanese Military Academy during the Japanese rule. After the liberation from the Japanese, he joined the North Korean military, but worked for the South. He was arrested and sentenced to death, but he was saved by his previous boss in the military. He was sent to Heungnam prison, where he met Mr. Moon. After Kim was introduced to me, we became close friends – like brothers. When he was released, he became a security officer in South Korea.
When the Unification Church was in trouble, he helped Mr. Moon in many ways. He saved Mr. Moon when he was attacked by his wife in Busan. She could do nothing about it.

A mysterious romance  162
One day Kim Won-deok told me an interesting story. It was a story of romance that made me jealous. He had taken a night train to Busan from Yongsan station a few days previously. He was sitting in first class. An attractive looking woman surrounded by many policemen got on the train. She appeared to be a lady connected to some high official. She sat on the seat in front of Kim. Until the train passed Daejun, they said nothing to each other. They just looked at each other.
After a while, she started to recite an old Korean poem, while she looked at Kim Won-deok’s profile. Her voice sounded like the voice of angel to him. She looked a little serious, but she was quite emotional. Kim was a man of much experience. He asked her if she was bravely travelling on to Busan. She answered that she was going to Busan on business, and that she ran an aluminum factory in Yongsan.
After that they chatted together until the train arrived at Busan. They parted at the station, but not before agreeing a time to meet again. Later, when they met, they had dinner together and watched a movie, just like an ordinary couple. She behaved like a social woman. She was very attractive. They went to a hotel together. Their short love affair was an something that Kim couldn’t explain. Kim had to stay in Busan ten days longer than he had planned.
A beautiful woman and a ‘Feast’  165
Kim Won-deok asked me to go to her house with him for dinner. Out of curiosity, I accompanied him to Yongsan.
Her house was an old Japanese style one. “Yoon” was written on the name tag. We were guided by two young women. The first room had a golden statue of the Buddha and candles, the next room was large and looked like a reception room. We were served tea, then an amorous perfume filled the room and she appeared. She greeted us nodding a little smiling.

Her voice was clear like crystal. She looked to be in her late 40s. She was wearing traditional Korean costume. It was like the costume of a bride. When we moved to the next room, a variety of delicious and colorful dishes were ready. She recited an old Chinese poem and we drank for the night.
A strange ability to predict  167
After she had practiced in Kuemkang Mountain for ten years, she said that she could see the future. She could see the fate of a person, and a lot of candidates for the National Assembly came to see her because she could predict election results. She could tell the success or failure of people in university entrance examinations.
Consequently, she said that her aluminum manufacturing plant, which she ran, was a side business. Her true purpose in life was to support poor orphans – especially girls – and to help them to get a university education and succeed in society. She said that many girls had already graduated from Ewha Womans University, and currently she was taking care of 17 girls.
As I heard this story, I did not dare to look directly at her face. After finishing dinner, we parted, promising to meet again. She implied that Kim was her boyfriend, and she did not care about his wife. She only wanted his love. She said there was no problem if they liked each other. I thought she was very different from ordinary secular people.
After that, Kim Won-deok and I were free to visit her house. Whenever we visited her, we were well treated with good meals.
Later she established a construction company, and Kim Won-deok was hired as president. But Kim had no experience in construction and was not able to manage it well. Soon the company went bankrupt. After that they established several different companies but they all failed.
Later on, Mrs Yoon asked us if she could meet Sun Myung Moon. They met finally on October 25, 1954 at Yang Yun-yeong’s house in Shindang-dong.

Sun Myung Moon stole a lover from his own disciple  169
On the appointed day, Kim Won-deok and I took Mrs Yoon to Mrs Yang Yun-yeong’s house. Women members such as Yang Yun-yeong, Lee Deuk-sam, Oh Yeong-choon, Ok Se-hyun, Chi Seung-do, Kim Soon-cheol, Lee Kee-hwan, Yang Yun-shin were gathered there as well as Eu Hyo-won, Eu Hyo-min, Lee Su-hyang, Kim Won-pil and others.
Mrs Yoon was wearing the best traditional Korean costume and seemed like a bride going into the groom’s house for the first night. The members who saw the scene, especially the female members, were overwhelmed. After greeting Mr. Moon, she looked at him with her spiritual eyes and said to him “You are having difficulty in finding a woman who will become a true mother. I came as a bride to greet my teacher as a groom, and I will serve you.” Everybody in the room was surprised again because she spoke so directly.
The atmosphere became like the time when the Jesus took three disciples up a mountain with him. Sun Myung Moon lectured about the principles for a long time that night. Mrs. Yoon sang traditional Korean songs and recited poetry and sang a Japanese tanka and recited haiku. Her voice took over the house as if she was the owner. It was surprising for Mrs. Yang Yun-yeong, a music professor at Ewha Womans University, to hear the sound.
At that time Mr. Moon was being closely watched by the authorities, and the curfew was at midnight. We parted promising to meet again.
About a week later, Sun Myung Moon suddenly visited Mrs Yoon’s house with Eu Hyo-min. Kim Won-deok and I were very surprised at his unexpected visit. I did not know that Sun Myung Moon would come. Mrs Yoon made delicious food with all her heart and entertained Sun Myung Moon. He sat with Mrs Yoon with the attitude of a groom going to his bride’s house. Mrs Yoon also seemed to expect that she would be a bride – like the woman who was preparing oil for the groom in the Bible story. Kim Won-deok and I stayed until late that night – eating, drinking and singing. Finally we left while Sun Myung Moon and Eu Hyo-min stayed.
That night, Sun Myung Moon said he had the pikareum sex ritual with Mrs. Yoon Cheong Jeong-shim.
Kim Won-deok evacuated from the north and came down to the south. In the early days when there was no place for Sun Myung Moon to live, he stayed for a while in Kim’s rented house. And when Sun Myung Moon was in difficult situations in Busan, several times Kim Won-deok took the lead and solved the problem.
Kim was betrayed by Sun Myung Moon who took his lover, Mrs Yoon Cheong Jeong-shim, and he began to avoid Sun Myung Moon. After that, when Elder Song Do-wook was secretary, Sun Myung Moon often visited Mrs Yoon. When Mr. Moon was arrested on July 4, 1955, Mrs Yoon also became estranged from Mr. Moon and the Unification Church for a while.
Kim Won-deok met me several times and expressed his anger and resentment about Sun Myung Moon’s betrayal. I tried hard to explain the principle of restoration to protect Sun Myung Moon, but Kim Won-deok did not want to hear.
Kim Won-deok said, “While there are so many women, how could Mr. Moon steal a woman who was loved by one of his disciples, and take her away. He is making me look like a fool. How can I submit a teacher who does such a thing? No matter how great the teachings of the Unification Church may be, I am not willing to believe them anymore. I cannot forgive Sun Myung Moon. He is just a fraudster who is using women in the name of religion.”
Kim Won-deok was a former soldier, but he was really outraged. I was too. He was really angry about Mr. Moon. He said, “The man called Sun Myung Moon is a horny dog, a dirty animal.”
I knew how angry he was, but I could not say anything further to him.
About two years later, Mrs Yoon, her step-daughter (the daughter of a university student), and housekeeper were killed by someone. There was an uproar about the three deaths.
The police investigated, but it was difficult like a labyrinth. At that time, the relationship between Sun Myung Moon and Mrs. Yoon was still continuing. Preparations were going on by people to make a film to be called “Oh Incheon” about the UN forces landing at Incheon during the Korean War (the 6.25 disturbance). But the sudden death of Mrs. Yoon left no funds and the project was put on hold.
Kim Won-deok was a suspect in the murders. At the time the police visited me to ask his whereabouts. Later I got the chance to meet Mr Kim many times. I looked at his sad appearance. He was quite surprised at what had happened [and said he had nothing to do with it.] We played a game of looking at all those associated with the victim to see if we could find the actual perpetrators. Kim Won-deok had not changed in any way and I was convinced that he was not the culprit.
Kim Won-deok is dead now, and already three years have passed.

So I finally got around to seeing ep 14 of Hotel Del Luna and okay, I get it. We are supposed to learn that there are two sides to a story. And yet, not for one moment do I feel like Chung Myung's torment comes even like 1% close to what Man Weol endured.
Chung Myung had to live with his actions yes, but on the other hand, Man Weol had to live with her decisions and the knowledge that her moment of weakness cost her her only family in this world. She's carried that guilt for so long. She's not angry at the fact that she fell for Chung Myung. She's angry at the fact that her misplaced love for him cost her the person most dear to her heart. Chung Myung kept Man Weol alive out of a promise to Yeon Woo, but if he loved her and knew her as well as he thought he did, then he would have known that she would have rather died along with Yeon Woo than watch him die in front of her eyes.
That Chung Myung gets to choose his suffering and Man Weol does not is fucking pissing me off. He saved her for what? So that she could spend the next thousand years brimming with resentment and just waiting to end all her suffering? And so that he could be a firefly who's guilty?
Chung Myung's choices constrast beautifully with that of Chan Seong. Chan Seong knows the perils of being with Man Weol. And he's prepared to pay that price. Becayse he respects Man Weol's choice. He's not tying her to a place out of a misguided sense of love. When he said he would be there till the end, he really did mean that he would love her regardless of whether she chose to stay or go.
To sum it up, Chung Myung thought of himself when keeping Man Weol alive.
Chan Seong thinks of Man Weol as she departs for the bridge. He has thought of Man Weol all along. He just wants to ensure that she goes as peacefully as possible.
He does not make the choice for her to stay or go because not only does he love her, more importantly, he respects her wishes and desires. And he wants to help her be comfortable with whichever path she chooses.

I haven’t fully processed the episode today and am completely in shock. I am also in no way prepared for the episode tomorrow.
The scenes from the past were so heartbreaking. He never gave his all in that sword fight given that he is the captain of the royal guard so he always intended on losing, her winning. All of that emotional pain and destroying their happy ending so that she would have a chance at survival. I think he had accepted his death long before he stepped foot in that bridal chamber. That thought kills me. I wonder though what would have happened if he followed his original plan of joining her and not Yeon Woo (I assume)’s orders-- would Man Wol have still survived? I think there are some holes there still that I hope get filled.
He was also just so happy to see her. Seriously injured and all he could say was how relieved he was that she was alive and how beautiful she was in bridal robes. His entire speech was tragically beautiful and to the audience cements the fact that their love is tragic and she does not know the full story because her resentment is based on hating a person that we know he is not. His love for her was pure and genuine and that hug and that promise to always be by her as a light that never fades---just all the tears started flowing. He kept that promise too for 1000 years staying by her side as a firefly.
I don’t necessarily know what I am hoping for in the coming episodes because these episodes have just been so shocking and each next episode so unexpected. I will always have a special place in my heart for Chung Myung and Man Wol and a second chance for their love will always be my utmost wish (their love story in general the topic of several little stories I have swimming around in my head-- the what if possibilities). But the writers have proven themselves to be masters at giving the unexpected and throwing the audience for a loop so I am nervous for my heart to keep hoping for them.
However, fundamentally, I hope for their reconciliation and her understanding. I want her to hear the entire story (that we also don’t know) and hear his motivations and reasons for doing what he did. I want her to know that he didn’t betray her in the traditional sense of the word and his feelings for her never were fake. He was backed into a corner and, from what I understand so far, he loved her so much that he would do whatever it took to keep her alive and safe even if it meant sacrificing the rest of her people and making her hate him. I want her to see that it destroyed him to do what he did. I want her to know that he passed by the chance at an afterlife to stay by her side as a creature as small as a firefly. That she has never been truly alone. Because she possesses this intense deep hatred for him that in some ways is misplaced because of lack of knowledge. I want her to recognize that the feelings they had for each other were deep, genuine and reciprocated (because otherwise it wouldn’t have killed her as much) and his stint as a firefly is testament to that.
I want her to listen and begin to let this deep hatred go. It would be great to see her treasure those memories of them together once more instead of seeing them as moments of weakness. He has stayed by her side silently this entire time, both alive and as a firefly, and she has been unaware. After all these years of silence, I want him to be able to speak his piece and find his peace too. Hopefully, with him temporarily in Chan Sung’s body, that gives him the freedom to do that because she wouldn’t so easily curse or inflict harm upon someone with the face of the person she is falling in love with. I do think that he guided Chan Sung back out of the tunnel because he knew how much Man Wol cared for him and then took the chance, because he is running out of time, to be able to talk to her. The disbelief as well on Chung Myung-as-Chan Sung’s face when Man Wol came running to him and hugged him and was so glad to see him was especially poignant. Because he hadn’t embraced Man Wol for 1,000 years and all he wanted while he was alive was for her to look at him like that and be able to hold her.
I think the scene with Mrs. Choi was also very important because, although she had every reason to, she didn’t pursue her resentment to the cost of the death of the unborn baby. I hope in the same way that Man Wol doesn’t pursue her resentment to the end and it not lead to the death of Chung Myung-- that before she deals the final blow, she steps back and realizes that she didn’t really want her resentment to pan out like that (because she didn’t look ecstatic when he died in her arms after killing himself in the past).
I shall process the rest of the episode eventually but for now, peeking through my fingers at any news for Episode 14.

Rev. Chung Hwan Kwak’s letter (April 22, 2020) Letter to Blessed families, brothers and sisters of the Unification Movement
Beloved Blessed families, brothers and sisters, I hope that God’s love and divine protection may always be with you and your families. As we celebrate Reverend Sun Myung Moon, True Father’s 100th birthday in 2020, I pray the unique experiences and moments you had with Father on earth can feel even more alive and become the catalyst and motivation for your lives. Today, I am sending what could be my last letter to you with a very desperate heart. At this moment, I can’t merely stand by looking at the sad situation our Unification Movement is in. Especially when I think of how today True Father’s lifelong achievements for the realization of God’s peaceful ideal world should be shining the brightest and when the providential movement he led should be bearing its best fruit. After much thought and consideration, I decided to write this letter. Last spring, on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of True Father’s Seonghwa, I published my book Truth Shall Prevail after a decade of silence. Throughout the entire writing process I was overtaken by a longing for Father and felt sorry towards him. In that book, I testified to the kind of person that True Father was from the perspective of someone who experienced him at the closest position for over 50 years. Furthermore, the book serves as a truthful historical and factual record of the situation I witnessed amid the confusion that took place in the Unification Movement for the last 10 years. When I heard that many Blessed family members were able to open their eyes to the truth and gained the courage to start over again through reading that book, I sincerely prayed that the book can serve to comfort Father and that it may become a light that guides the Unification Movement in the right direction. Meanwhile, around that time last year I participated in the centennial commemorative celebration of the March 1st movement at the plaza in front of the National Assembly building. I was moved beyond words. One Japanese female NGO activist went on stage and shouted out that she made it this far because she was fascinated by Dr. Hyun Jin Moon’s “Korean Dream”. I could not but feel a surge of excitement. Hyun Jin Nim’s masterful and eloquent speech in front of the National Assembly moved all the honorable guests, including the mayor of Seoul, Won-soon Park. During the event that was being broadcast live nationally, I tried not to get choked up every time I saw Hyun Jin Nim’s image appear on the stage on screen. All I could think of was how happy Father would have been were he alive and watching this scene. Last summer, my wife and the families of my children participated in the Special Blessing Ceremony for the Foundation of Cheon Il Guk officiated by Hyun Jin Nim. We received the great blessing of being able to engraft onto the True Family once again. As our true Abel and elder brother, Hyun Jin Nim forgave the Blessed families that had deserted and persecuted him. He offered this opportunity for Blessed families to participate in that Blessing ceremony, with the hope that they will repent, return, and reconnect to the True Family to walk the path as owners of Cheon Il Guk. This Special Blessing Ceremony for the Foundation of Cheon Il Guk is not a one-off Blessing ceremony event, but rather a process that all Blessed families must go through to atone for their mistakes. Although I can’t explain the entire meaning of it in this letter, I believe you should know that it is of grave providential importance. Last winter there was a very happy occasion in Hyun Jin Nim’s family. One of Hyun Jin Nim’s daughters received the holy wedding with her parents as officiators of the ceremony. In no time, four of Hyun Jin Nim’s nine children established a 3-generation True Family. The day after the holy wedding a group of First and Second-Generation grooms and brides participated in a joint Blessing ceremony with Hyun Jin Nim’s couple as the officiators. Three of my grandchildren also received the Blessing that day. I feel incredible hope seeing Hyun Jin Nim wholly inherit and develop the core mission that Father carried on, advancing internal and external goals abiding by God’s providential standard and the Principle. Considering all the hardship endured over the last 10 years and the situations that took place behind the scenes, it is truly moving and one can only shed tears of gratitude and be thankful to Heaven to see Hyun Jin Nim’s family settle as it has. Overcoming this sacrificial process Hyun Jin Nim’s entire family set the most exemplary precedent and tradition of the True Family before Heaven. Not only that, he also forgave Blessed families and opened the path for them to reconnect to God’s Will and the providence; externally he lay the great foundation of our providential movement for South Korea and the world. Isn’t this the biggest consolation and hope for True Father as he enters his 100th birthday? If there are those among you who are truly concerned for Hyun Jin Nim and are offering jungsung for him, I ask that you have a little bit more courage and approach Hyun Jin Nim’s public letters, prayers, or his official books, such as “Realizing God’s Dream” or “Korean Dream”. Taking it one step further, I earnestly ask you to please check for yourselves directly the type of work he has been doing and the type of life that Hyun Jin Nim has been leading. We used to tell those who unilaterally opposed Father that if they wanted to know who Reverend Sun Myung Moon was, they should go and see for themselves the work that he did. Likewise, if you want to really know what kind of person Hyun Jin Nim is, you will find the answer in the work that he does and the life that he leads. Blessed families, brothers and sisters, Because we are celebrating the 100th birthday and 8th anniversary of True Father’s Seonghwa this year, I see this period as one of great providential transformation. Though the confusion within the Unification Movement reached a climax, from this year it will begin to correct itself faster than you can anticipate. The calls for self-purification will not be heard from Heaven but from earth. That’s because Blessed families who want to protect God’s will and True Father’s achievements will resolutely stand up and their spirit will spread like wildfire. For me, more than anything else, I believe in the removal of all false figures cast upon True Father’s fundamental teachings and great lifetime achievements, so that their original true worth may be shown to the world; and thereby opening a new era that can inspire courage and hope in all people. Hyun Jin Nim will be standing at the forefront of that effort with righteous and determined Blessed families participating together. Some day, as if by fate, the entire Unification Movement will follow the path that they opened for us. If you have properly perceived the big picture of this providential moment—even though we see all sorts of regrettable content one after the other coming from some parts of the Unification Movement today—you will not need to feel disappointment or despair. It’s the phenomenon of disgusting pus oozing and exploding from all the sores and abscesses that the Unification Movement suffered from for a long time. But it’s also a hopeful sign that new skin will grow. This is a process by which the providence is corrected; truth and lies are determined; and Principled and unprincipled acts are clearly differentiated. Therefore, we must move forward with the mentality that we will be the ones to take responsibility over this problem, discerning that which is right and wrong from a principled perspective and from the viewpoint of God’s will and providence. That is what True Father expected of us—it’s the 5% portion of responsibility given to each and every one of us. And it cannot but be the final responsibility of our elder Blessed family members who are entering the final stage of their lives on earth. I recently heard the news that Mother did away with the “Family Federation” and started a new “Heavenly Parents Church”. I see this phenomenon as a clear separation of that which is true and that which is false at the final moment. Looking just at this latest direction from Mother, it is evident that she completely left Father and is walking down a road that goes against God’s providence. Brothers and sisters, how was the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification born and what was the mission of that providential organization? The founding of the Family Federation was considered a great providential shift, so how did the providence change before and after its founding? Did True Father’s passing signify the end of the need for the Family Federation? If we answer these questions correctly, we will understand how Mother’s decision to go on with her “Heavenly Parents Church” is counter-providential. After going through a period of indemnity for 40 years, True Father opened the era of the Completed Testament Age. As the first International President, I remember clearly that Father was so deeply moved when he founded the Family Federation that he took the lead in the preparation for the founding of this providential organization. The reason Father was so moved was not because he established another providential organization among many. It’s because the providential moment for Father to walk the original path that he was supposed to walk as the Messiah, Lord of the Second Coming, True Parent had finally begun after 40 years. The launching of the Family Federation represented the great providential transition from the era of the providence of restoration to the era of the Completed Testament Age: The establishment of a peaceful ideal world centered on God’s ideal family. In other words, it meant the beginning of creating a world of one family under God. More precisely, with the settlement of the True Family, which carries God’s original lineage, all of humanity would engraft on to that True Family and become God’s children of goodness and lineage through the Blessing movement. And the expansion of that Blessing movement would lead to the realization of God’s ideal world. The most important mission that the Family Federation had at that significant turning point of the providence was the Settlement of the True Parents and the True Family, which are the root of God’s providential Movement. In order for the True Family to settle centered on the True Parents, not only do the Three Great Kingships and the Four Great Realms of Heart have to be secured, but the standard of uniting the Cain-type and Abel-type realms has to be achieved. True Father did not desire succession by an institutionalized church system as exists in established religious entities for future generations. As Father tended to ask: If Jesus had direct descendants, would he have bequeathed his crown to his disciples? Father desired for the son that he publicly recognized to inherit the same authority Father held and to continue his messianic mission. In order to set that order and tradition, after recognizing Hyun Jin Nim in 1998, Father announced the Era of Father-Son Cooperation. Father said that in the future even Mother should follow the son that Father recognized then. Not only that, but the Blessed families representing the worldwide Cain-type realm have to become one with the realm of the True Children, especially with the elder son recognized by Father, thereby uniting the Cain-Abel realms. The condition of that Cain-Abel unity is necessary for the Settlement of the True Family, and it is on that basis that Foundation Day can be proclaimed. One other important mission the Family Federation was supposed to achieve was the awakening of humankind’s universal spirituality through the Blessing movement. It was supposed to fulfill the role of educating and guiding people starting from each individual family so that each family could establish a God-centered family fulfilling each family member’s individual portion of responsibility, thereby leading to the expansion of that cultural realm from the tribal level to the nation and to the world. In order to open the providential era prior to the Family Federation, True Father announced the establishment of the Family Pledge on May 1, 1994, he opened the era in which we could report (pray) in our own names, and established the Hoondok tradition. These were radical measures announced by Father one after the other. All of these measures were intimately connected and were meant to be for human beings, who had restored the original parent-child relationship that was intended at Creation, to fulfill their portion of responsibility at the basic family level in the Completed Testament Age. These were traditions that were absolutely necessary to substantially establish God’s ultimate sovereignty on this earth. At the time, as I was honoring True Father’s words, I wondered whether the people leading the Family Federation truly understood the significance of the great providential transition that had taken place. And I could not but seriously question whether they fully carried out their public responsibility and mission. Because if they had properly understood and honored True Father’s will, there would not be the confusion that exists today. Since I was in charge of the Family Federation at the time, I am by no means free from this responsibility. Although externally the Family Federation carried out a variety of activities and increased the number of Blessed families, they only acted as the “Family Federation” in name—leaders desired it to settle as just any other church. The gravest mistake they made was to divinize True Parents and repeat the error that Christianity made towards Jesus. The leaders went as far as to absolutize True Parents and use that concept as a way to maintain their own authority. They made a false framework that ‘any order given from True Parents must absolutely be followed since True Parents are one in body and spirit and are omniscient,’ and took advantage of it treating members like ignorant masses to be exploited. And they especially used this mentality to drive out Hyun Jin Nim, who was their biggest threat. After True Father passed onto spirit world, the leaders propagated the idea that Mother could communicate with Father—asking questions and receiving answers—and that Father and Mother were always connected as one, to make members blindly follow any direction that came from Mother’s mouth. The messiah is a human being and is not a being that knows everything. As a person advances in age normal bodily functions weaken, eventually growing old and sick. It is also the case with one’s mental state. True Father was not an exception to human aging. Because Father was well aware of this point it is said that he told Hyun Jin Nim around 2007 that, “there will come a time when Father is like a child,” and therefore, when that time comes you (Hyun Jin Nim) should go on and take responsibility over everything. The FFWPU leadership promoted that Mother was completely united with Father, and even Mother spoke as if she was asking questions and receiving answers from God Himself. Such claims are completely contrary to the Principle and are a mockery and insult to both God and Father. One can know whether Mother is united with Father, or whether she is one with God’s will by looking at her words and actions. If the leaders really had confidence on this point they would not have promoted it heavily the way they did; and even if Mother didn’t say that she communicated with God and received answers, people would naturally have followed Mother and they would have testified to her being one with God and Father. Although Hyun Jin Nim attempted to reform the Family Federation numerous times after being inaugurated as International Vice-President in 1998, he repeatedly faced opposition and had to experience frustration and setbacks. At one point in 2009, the FFWPU leadership even attempted to drive him away from the Unification Movement—to leave him out in the wilderness. The sin that these FFWPU leaders falsely blamed upon Hyun Jin Nim was that he was a son who disobeyed Father’s direction and that he was a thief who stole public assets. The truly ironic thing is that as these leaders blamed and criticized Hyun Jin Nim, the people of the world recognized Dr. Hyun Jin Moon as the person who fully inherited Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s will and continued on his work. They evaluated Hyun Jin Nim as the person who achieved incredible results to advance Father’s work. I want to sincerely ask you: Who is the person that inherited Father’s authority? And who really usurped Father’s foundation? Who is the person that is truly realizing Father’s will in this era? On December 2, 2017, Hyun Jin Nim inaugurated the Family Peace Association (FPA). Because the Family Federation had strayed from its original mission and it was no longer possible to work with that vehicle, Hyun Jin Nim made this determination. At the inaugural speech of FPA, he said, “for me personally, this inauguration expresses my commitment to continuing my father’s lifelong work.” Today, 3 years after the founding of FPA—considering that Mother is throwing away the Family Federation and changing to her new “Heavenly Parents Church” that has no relevance with the providence—one cannot but be amazed at the mysterious ways in which God’s providence works and at Hyun Jin Nim’s incredible foresight. For members being forced to change their faith onto the Heavenly Parents Church, which is like a spiritual death sentence, the Family Peace Association founded by Hyun Jin Nim is like a lifeboat that came to the rescue. After True Father’s Seonghwa ceremony, Mother changed and eliminated many things he established. Mother changed and distorted the Eight Great Textbooks that Father directly canonized. And she made the Cheon Il Guk constitution as if they were laws of a particular religion, instead of upholding Father’s desire to complete a proper constitution based on the Family Pledge. And there are other examples in which she eliminated Father’s precious achievements overnight. Mother went as far as changing her own identity. In all of human history she was the most precious being because True Father went through a course to re-create her to become True Mother. But she threw away the status of True Mother and reappeared with a new name as the “only begotten daughter”. Now she claims that she is a being that was born without original sin for the first time in 6000 years, and that she knew the Principle without receiving education from anyone. Mother’s assertions are in direct contradiction and opposition to True Father’s teaching that the messiah, who comes as completed Adam, finds and selects a woman among fallen women, and receives her as a bride. Mother’s claims completely turn against Father’s teaching that, “God invested His 100% to create Adam, and Adam invests his 100% to create Eve.” I gave Principle lectures in person to Mother during the beginning of Parents’ holy wedding period, and upon Mother’s request I even gave her documents with a summary of the main points of the Principle. Knowing this, I truly have no way of understanding how Mother could make such false and unprincipled claims. Taking it a step even further from claiming herself to be the “only begotten daughter”, Mother changed the designation of God to “Heavenly Parents”. Some may say this is not a problem because it looks like an expression of God as our Parent. However, it is actually a claim of dualism that shakes the very foundation of the monotheistic view of God that comes from the Judeo-Christian line of faith. It also stems from ignorance and from not properly understanding God’s original state explained both in the Divine Principle and in Unification Thought. The term “Heavenly Parent” occasionally appears in The Sermons of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. But, the term “Heavenly Parent” that appears in The Sermons is more of an expression used to emphasize the heartistic relationship between God and humanity. Its meaning is completely different from the “Heavenly Parents” that is mentioned in Mother’s autobiography or in FFWPU memos. Furthermore, according to “The Principle of Creation” in the Exposition of the Divine Principle, God is defined as “the Subject in whom the dual characteristics of original internal nature and original external form are in harmony. At the same time, God is the harmonious union of masculinity and femininity, which manifest the qualities of original internal nature and original external form, respectively.” In this definition the original internal nature and original external form are the primary characteristics, and the masculine and feminine aspects are His attributes, according to the Principle and Unification Thought. What ultimately remains is God as a “Subject with dual characteristics in harmony.” As such, the proper definition of God is that of a subject with dual characteristics in harmony (neutral), so why is Mother obsessing with the attributes of masculinity and femininity which are not even the primary characteristics? The reason for that is because of the influence of feminism over Mother. This can be understood from what is written in the Introduction of her new autobiography. Trying to understand God from the theological perspective of a radical feminist, the only thing they can see is the part that talks about God’s attributes regarding His ‘dual characteristics of masculinity and femininity’. This only goes to show how Mother and those around her are ignorant regarding the Principle or the history of the providence. “However, due to the fall of human ancestors the ideal of creation of the Heavenly Parents was prolonged, and, a male-centric history proceeded centered on God’s masculinity as Heavenly Father instead of the status of Heavenly Parents. Hellenism and Hebraism, which formed the foundation of Western civilization, advanced a strictly male-centric history. Therefore, the status of Heavenly Mother which is God’s femininity was concealed, and God could not become Heavenly Parents. The reason the feminist movement that detonated in the West degenerated into a mere revolutionary movement of resistance against the rule of men is also related to God’s ontological status.” - “Mother of peace”, Introduction – This time, when Mother announced that they would no longer be the Family Federation, and that they were adopting a new identity and name as the Heavenly Parents Church, I wondered what providential pretext would be offered to justify it. According to the public notice issued on April 4th, 2020, by the FFWPU, it stated that, “Because [we are] in a position to embrace all 7.7 billion people around the world, we are no longer the Unification Church and we are no longer the Family Federation. We are changing the name to the Heavenly Parents Church.” These words reveal Mother’s low level of understanding of the Principle and her view of the providence. Because the world can’t be embraced through the Family Federation, she will create an even more narrow church denomination to do that? What kind of nonsensical claim is this? Her words mean that the Family Federation isn’t good enough to embrace the whole world, then isn’t that saying that Father created a providential organization that is limited? It is truly hard to agree with her claims. And that is because as he officially inaugurated the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification in 1996 and 1997, True Father internationally and interreligiously opened the doors wide for the Blessing so that all the 7.7 billion people of the world would be able to participate in it. Father even proclaimed the cosmic universalization of the Blessing, thereby allowing spirits in spirit world to also participate in the Blessing; he expanded the Blessing providence even more so that people could participate within the realm of the grace of the Blessing depending on a person’s stage in the cycle of life, whether it be in a rebirth ceremony (in the womb, newborn), or a resurrection ceremony (adolescence), or an eternal life ceremony (elderly age). The Heavenly Parents Church has no providential justification. So, I considered why Mother is trying to create this church from another perspective. Could it be that it’s because in Mother’s mind the only thing that exists are the True Parents, and there is no concept of the True Family? I have frequently heard Mother’s speeches and it has been a long time since I heard her say the word “True Family”. She only emphasizes submission and obedience to Parents. But, one time Hyun Jin Nim said something that is in contrast with Mother. At the 50th True God’s Day anniversary Hyun Jin Nim said, “There can be no True Parents if there are no True Children.” At the celebration of True Father’s 100th birthday, Hyun Jin Nim said that True Father’s greatest achievement was establishing the True Family on earth, and that the most important providential institution in God’s providence is True Family. He said that the Blessing does not come from any church, but that it comes from the True Family. Both the Family Federation and the Family Peace Association live by the motto that a peaceful ideal world can be realized and all of humanity can live with God as the Parent of humankind by establishing an ideal family of God, that is a God-centered family. Without creating the basis for the Three Great Kingships and the Four Great Realms of Heart centered on the True Family, God cannot dwell at the center of that family as the Parent. By ignoring the basic notions of the Principle of Creation and demanding that we only worship True Parents, Mother herself is tearing down the foundation of the True Children who should be able to reach the position of True Parents. Isn’t that what her claims mean? If Mother truly desired to embrace the 7.7 billion people of the world, instead of isolating herself by creating the Heavenly Parents Church, she should return to the path of establishing a True Family where God would want to visit and dwell in. If Mother returns to the position of God’s true daughter, Father’s true wife, Children’s true mother, then all humanity and the entire spirit world will serve and love Mother as the True Mother. Concluding remarks – The key that opens the door to Heaven, the Three Great Kingships and the Four Position Foundation in the True Family, the Vertical Axial Line Beloved Blessed families, brothers and sisters, Humanity was born with original sin and, as if by fate, we cannot alone remove ourselves from Satan’s false love, false life, and false lineage. As such, humanity can only become part of God’s family by engrafting onto the Tree of Life which is the Three Great Kingships and the Four Position Foundation of the True Family. When Mother gave birth to Ye Jin Nim, True Father told Blessed families, “Through the very small condition of participating in Mother’s labor pains, Blessed families go back into the position of being in the womb and are as if reborn as twins with the True Children.” And that is why Blessed families have the tradition to attend and call the True Children as our elder brothers and sisters, regardless of age. For the last 10 years or so, the relationship between Blessed families and the “original lineage” of True Family and True Children—which are the root of God’s true life, true love, and true lineage—has been disconnected by the words and actions of so-called “church leaders” surrounding Mother. I heard that instead of “succession by lineage,” they are calling it “succession by an institutionalized church system”. Although Blessed families had the special privilege of receiving True Father’s grace through the Family Pledge to be “Owners of Cheon Il Guk”, “to represent and become central to heaven and earth”, “to become a family that moves heavenly fortune”, and to be “a family that conveys Heaven's blessing to our community”, we must not forget the 7th verse of the Family Pledge which establishes the prerequisite of being a family that connects with the “original lineage”. There is no doubt that the “original lineage” refers to the vertical axial line of the Three Great Kingships and Four Position Foundation of the True Family, which is the Tree of Life. On August 13, 2012, True Father offered his “final report” to God putting all of his jungsung and soul and body. In this report True Father earnestly and desperately asked that all Blessed families attend the True Family’s True Children at the center and fulfill their duties as tribal messiahs, so that the substantial Cheon Il Guk could be offered up to God. But our Blessed families and members are forgetting True Father’s “final report”. The last providential event True Father participated while on earth was titled the “Proclamation of the Word of the True Body through the Cosmic Assembly for the Firm Settlement of the True Parents of Heaven, Earth and Humankind.” In the last part of True Father’s public speech in this event he said that the Eight Great Textbooks are gifts that he is giving to humanity, and they are his will (as in, final wish before passing away). True Father asked us to continue forward centered on these words until Cheon Il Guk is established. Among the Eight Great Textbooks, three of them are especially designated as sacred texts; these are the “Cheon Seong Gyeong, Peace Messages, and the Family Pledge”. Father gave a clear and dire warning that, “These three volumes are sacred texts and they are Heaven’s constitution; therefore, you should not change even one letter.” Yet, despite Father’s strong words, Mother and those leaders surrounding her were hatching a plan to dismantle and change the content of the Eight Great Textbooks as True Father was lying on his deathbed before passing onto spirit world. The result of that scheme is Mother’s so-called “Cheon Il Guk scriptures” which includes Mother’s version of the “Cheon Seong Gyeong, Peace Messages, and Chambumo Gyeong”. Even after witnessing what Mother and leaders had done, the Blessed families and members stood by idly, keeping their mouths shut. But I heard that in the upcoming 60th Anniversary of True Parents Holy Wedding, Mother and leaders are going to publish a new version of the “Chambumo Gyeong” that contains additional unprincipled and counter-providential content proclaiming the “only begotten daughter,” among other claims. Are we just going to stand by and look the other way, even as they continuously dismantle, damage, and doctor the words of the Eight Great Textbooks? True Father left all the tangible and intangible providential foundation, along with the title of “Owner of Cheon Il Guk”, for Blessed families to inherit. The ownership of the Eight Great Textbooks belongs to no one other than the “Owners of Cheon Il Guk,” that is, you, the Blessed families. These Texts are God and True Father’s “final gift and will” that he is giving to Blessed families and to humanity. For how much longer will we, Blessed Families, be relinquishing our responsibility and right as owners? Mother and the “church” leaders have been destroying and selling away the providential foundation and holy grounds established by True Father. What kind of place was the Su-Taek-Ri Central Training Center? It’s the very place where the providence for the International Victory Over Communism started, as well as being the main place where matchings for Blessings took place. It was also the birth place of providential and Principle education that would lead to world peace and new life. They sold that place and put up apartments there. Mother and these leaders have changed the names of all the main providential institutions that True Father founded while he was alive, adding the words “HJ, Hyo-jeong, Magnolia” to them. Are there Blessed family members that are still unaware those words and letters are the English initials of Mother’s name? They are the symbolic representation of Mother, Hak Ja Han. Now, they have changed the name of the “Family Federation” to “Heavenly Parents Church”. The Family Federation was supposed to be a providential organization that would substantially realize Cheon Il Guk on earth during the Completed Testament Age. But instead, this has been changed to the “Heavenly Parents Church”; a name which seems to come right from the Old or New Testament during the age of the providence of restoration through indemnity. Mother and the “church” leaders surrounding her are now advancing their new “Heavenly Parents Church” with content that is female-centric, only-begotten-daughter-centric, and radically feminist. Even as they live in the “Completed Testament Age” where they should be substantiating the original ideal of creation, they are going in the opposite direction. Through their actions they are dragging parts of the Unification Movement and Blessed families back to the era of the Old and New Testaments—an era in which we need salvation from Satan and from sins. By doing so they have put Blessed families back in a position as if they had fallen again. Blessed families, brothers and sisters! We are now at a crossroads where we must make a final decision and determination. Will it be True Father, or the only begotten daughter? Is it God’s true love, true life, and true lineage, or is it Satan’s false love, false life, and false lineage? Is it the Principle, or is it unprincipled? Is it the path of the providence or is it counter-providential? Will you choose life or will you choose death? Will you be an owner of Cheon Il Guk, or will you be a fallen servant? We no longer have the leisure to hesitate. Blessed families, brothers and sisters, I conclude this letter hoping that God and True Father will be happy by the choice you make.

Hotel Del Luna (2019) Thoughts
Tumblr media
Warning: will contain spoilers. I suggest you watch the drama first to relate with what I’m talking about because it will be messy.
Disclaimer: Everything written only reflects my own thoughts. There’s a possibility of incoherence. Forgive me, sometimes my brain is all over the place.
Ever since IU was announced as a main lead for this drama, I have been looking forward to it. I have enjoyed IU’s other dramas especially her most recent one in Netflix - Persona. Yeo Jin goo is an actor I like but the last drama of his that I was able to finish (and barely at that) was Orange Marmalade (2015). I couldn’t get into his next dramas after that and ended up dropping them.
After seeing the plot and the fantasy tag (I always have a soft spot for fantasy dramas), as much as I enjoyed and looked forward to new episodes of its predecessor, Arthdal Chronicles, I also could not wait for it to start.
Additional warning: Everything is all over the place and this is going to be a lengthy post. I wrote everything that I wanted to talk about right after watching the subbed version of the last episode but there is no proper structure. I apologise in advance if you decide to read everything.
I don’t even know where I should start. The Hong Sisters really did well with this drama - the years spent on it was worth it. That ending was, I can’t believe I’m saying this but I was so satisfied even though they didn’t spend much time together in this life. I was expecting a bittersweet ending when the drama started anyway. I loved the ending and that reincarnation scene (although it is not definite but just an ‘eventually, it will end up that way’ scene) was everything to me. I don’t know why but I loved how they didn’t try to extend Man Wol’s time with Chan Seong (example, releasing her from the hotel and making her human again). It was enough for me because Man Wol also spent enough time suffering. Her time with Chan Seong, although brief, was good enough because she experienced the love she needed and she gets sent off full of it.
That twist at the end though, how Chan Seong was chosen by Mago - I’m crying. Chan Seong was definitely a reincarnation of someone from her past. They were actually acquainted during Man Wol’s childhood - and he was the one who introduced her to the guesthouse of the moon.
So now, let’s go to the other parts I really wanna talk about.
One of the reasons why I got hooked and invested with Hotel Del Luna was the fact the way they executed the comical elements despite the horror and drama tags. Additionally, the music and the CGI were really well done. The soundtrack really gets me.
The other reasons, well, IU can really pull off Jang Man Wol - a protagonist who can be ruthless, has a slightly bitchy attitude, crooked (but her actions can be justified) and holds a deep resentment. Yet, she has her cute sides too; all the Kim Joon Hyun moments were a sight to see (her obsession for the restaurants he’s been to, enjoyed it! Later we find out her obsession to find good restaurants were actually influenced by Chan Seong who went to the past! Mind blown!). And her fighting scenes were so cool. IU’s eyes are really expressive in my eyes -
Tumblr media
Appreciate.
I love how despite being crude in her ways when it comes to dealing with the grudges of the souls she’s helping, there is an underlying meaning to it - example, Hyun Joong being able to graduate because of the money donated by his friend. And, I can’t blame her for loving money and wealth. After all, that was what she didn’t have when she was living. I have to add that one of the things I look forward to every episode was IU’s outfit changes. She looks so good in everything! [I actually couldn’t stop myself from buying some of the stuff she wore. Hold your horses, I can only afford the cheap ones like the earrings and hair clips from Get Me Bling that she wore. And I wanna do a face palm because I accidentally bought 2 sets for one of her earrings so now I’m like, what do I do with this?]
Tumblr media
The bickering between the leads together with that comical/mischievous soundtrack, pure gold. It’s easily one of my favourite moments. It’s just really funny how sometimes Jang Man Wol is left without words because Chan Seong is right.
Tumblr media
The more I watch this gif tho, it starts to look weirder to look at so don't watch it more than 10 times.
I also like how they dealt with Man Wol’s back story - not giving the viewers everything in just one episode. Instead, it was spliced and distributed nicely throughout. Oh but gods, I was a wreck when everything was laid down - Chung Myung’s sacrifice... I just can’t. And how he was with her as a firefly since the beginning... My heart... I actually forgot that scene from the beginning until they showed it again. I though it was just an artistic shot. I actually wanted Man Wol to go with him to the afterlife when it was finally time for him to go. When she escorted him, I wanted her to walk with him during that moment. But at the same time, I can see that there was only a one-sided love left between them because Man Wol spent so many years resenting him that there was no love left. When she finally learned the truth, the only thing left in her was forgiveness and that was the only thing she can offer. The CGI on the bridge to the afterlife though, the aesthetic, props to the CGI team.
Can I just talk about how the actor grew on me? Like, omg, I’m now looking forward to any drama he’s going to be on. [Note: I have since seen him in a new drama, The Great Show (I was watching it because of Lee Sunbin (one of my favourite actresses)) and he’s the teen version of the male lead! I screamed when I saw him.] I should check him out on his previous dramas but when I saw the list of dramas, I don’t think I’ll get into them yet.
Tumblr media
Help my heart, their story is so sad.
Helping Kim Seonbi /Kim Si Ik solve his grudge was really fun to watch. And the ‘fact’ that he was the writer of those stories almost all Koreans know, what a twist. Man Wol really cared for him despite not showing it to him - how she tried to find a way to solve his grudge and how she cried after he finally left.
Choi Seo hee’s story was an unfortunate one but it added more flavour to the already flavourful drama. Those who value family ties or still have crooked views when it comes to family lineage will resonate with her story and perhaps have a change of heart.
Hyun Joong; I love how they gave more depth to his story. That it was not only because of his sister that he was staying as a hotel staff but deep inside there was a resentment. When they wrapped his story up, all I can do was to smile wistfully. His story arc with Yuna was a great addition despite their bittersweet goodbye.
The Sanchez story arc; I... I... He was such a fun character and a good friend to Chan Seong. I sincerely thought they were going to get rid of his character when he went overseas to oversee the funeral of his girlfriend. But we got him back and see another side to him - a rather relatable side where if one loses a loved one, they would find ways to reconnect or hold on to any sliver of hope that they’ll be able to once more be able to talk to them or give them something. Probably, not making sense anymore, but if you’ve lost a loved one before, you’ll get what I'm talking about. After finally getting over it, well, he was not the same Sanchez after that but there was growth in his character.
Tumblr media
Mira and Young soo. A twist of fate, these two. Enemies in the past life but became lovers in their current life. Their bitter fates became sweeter this time around. I can't entirely hate on Mira’s past life because her next lives were spent repenting (although it wasn’t shown). Her currently life was finally rewarded, if you can call being with Young soo in her current life a reward. I kept on thinking Mira was just like Chan Seong (not a rich person) but I was so surprised to learn her parents were kimchi factory owners and that Young Soo ate those kimchi since young.
Mago - easily my favourite character. Wait, characters. Because of how many personalities/sisters she has. Really have to give mad props to the actress. She is just so good. Probably my favourite sister has to be the pink sister and then the eldest. It was so funny when they were having a meeting discussing about the new hotel owner and mentioned the ‘poor’ sister still stuck in Joseon dynasty.
Ah, the cameos in this drama. I can’t not cover that. The amount of cameo is just, whoa! This drama is so rich with it. Some really memorable ones to me are: Kim Won hae (as a corrupt mayor), Lee Joon Gi (as an exorcist; Park Il Do hahah, The Guest feels (I ought to make a post on my thoughts about this drama soon); can’t forget the Scarlet Heart feels too), Lee Si Eon (as an astronaut; I couldn't help laugh at the scene), Lee Yi-kyung (as an actor who can’t really act; Waikiki feels!), Kim Joon Hyun (as himself; I screamed because the first few scenes didn't show his face), Park Jin Joo (as an imaginary spirit), Sulli (as the granddaughter of Chairman Wang), Nam Da reum(as a water deity; I really don’t like the fact he’s younger than me; kidding. He’s a talented kid.) Hwang Young Hee (as IU’s previous manager; she’s a really good actress) and Kim Soo Hyun (as the new owner of the hotel; He renamed it Hotel Blue Moon. I’m telling you, I hyperventilated when his scene came. Such a good way to end the drama - at least for me. Hotel Blue Moon as a drama please!)
Tumblr media
For the last episode, I wanted to watch it during the actual broadcast time but I actually calculated the time wrongly (thinking I'm 4 hours ahead but actually just 3 hours; good thing I checked the site). I missed the first 25 mins of the actual broadcast. But I eventually re-watched it with subs and came to write this post). I can only understand roughly 80-85% of the dialogue for the raw version but even then, I was bawling - all the goodbyes; it was so sad but so satisfying at the same time because they were sent off really well. From Kim Seonbi’s to Choi Seohee’s. Painful to see the goodbyes but also very heartwarming; how they finally come to resolve their resentments, came to realizations and tied up loose ends - it was so beautiful. The relationship between the Hotel crew was just so precious - Jang Man Wol crying as she realises how she’ll miss them. Feels. Feels. Feels.
Overall, I learned so many things in this drama and came to certain realisations such as treasuring the time you have with others, don’t take it for granted. One day, when the time to say goodbye comes, you won’t regret anything. Also, even the people who did bad things in their life can have the chance to live a better one in the next once they have paid for those wrongdoings.
This drama was a perfect blend of comedy, drama, horror, fantasy, romance. In terms of food, it satisfied my cravings. Watching this drama was one of the best things that I did this year. As much as I want to talk more about this drama and cover more areas, I should stop here. All in all, I would say, I really loved this drama. I’ll definitely go back to watching this when I have nothing else to watch. P.S. I ought to make a Jang Man Wol inspired look but when I tried, I failed.

I’ll miss you, Jang Man Wol-ssi.

Thoughts about Ruler: Master of the Mask, Part 10
(Note: This entry is going to be longer than the usual incoherent or coherent posts I've had. I'm still digesting all the feelings I have for this episode because wow, RMOTM actually had the potential to raise the bar.)
I must be a sadist. I watched The Throne last Tuesday, then I watched today's episode. I've mourned Yoo Ah In's Sado, now I mourn for Yoo Seung Ho's Lee Seon (albeit for a short period of time).
The episode last night depicted a good picture of the main theme of this show imo, power, which fits just right as we move headfirst to the climax of the story.
(I’ll be a decent person for once and put this expand post thing here because this entry has more spoilers than I think should be spilled).
Dae Mok proved to be the best villain out of all in the show as he nitpicked on all his enemies. In one swoop, with the fake King's help, he managed to get absolute power within the court and in extension, Joseon. He loves (with whatever is left of his blackened heart) his granddaughter, as we've seen throughout the series, but will not waver in the name of his organization. He tortured the true king with his lover and his most loyal friend, knowing that beneath the regality, he is simply a man who protects the people he care about. I could already feel the satisfaction of seeing him dead when this series ends, in whatever form it will reach him. Props to Heo Jun Ho for being very, very effective on his role.
I feel bad for the queen dowager, but then again, the better villain always prevails. I will miss her being at the top of her game. Kim Sun Kyung is becoming one of my favorite actresses to watch in her generation, second to Jeon Mi Sun.
Hwa Goon actually gained my sympathy this time as her grandfather forced her to bend to his will. I liked the interaction she had with her father, that the latter's love always prevails. They gained my sympathy because beneath all the bullshit they experienced from the head of their family, they never lost the ability to care for each other. I still dislike her for forcing herself to the true king (especially at this episode), but actually felt sad at the idea that she would surrender everything to him. I'll discuss more on the true king later. For now, it will suffice to say that had the true king held hands with Pyunsoo Group by marrying Hwa Goon, it will only ruin them both. I hate her for slapping Ga Eun because the latter has no idea (again, who’s fault is this?) because she had no fucking right. Who set the ball ralling in the first place? Huh? (slaps Hwa Goon because you need to wake up too girl!!) But what takes the cake for me was when Gon lied to Hwa Goon for her sake! And how it breaks Gon to betray his master. Why did the writers fucking threw their pairing aside?! (screams) And when Hwa Goon actually pressed the sword on Gon's neck with the latter remaining steady on his resolve! What a parallel with our main leads. Had the writers went this way, I would have liked Hwa Goon more (even just a smidge of it). Anyway, thumbs up to Kim Seo Kyung for portraying Gon this way, worming in my heart after that fucking Hyun Suk betrayed us all. In the case of Yoon So Hee, she has her moments, but she still feels exhausted to me when she gets angry (except for that scene with Gon). I would have wanted an extra oomph from her, because Hwa Good could have been more likable on my part had she brought the same degree on intensity as the other leads.
The one receiving my ire once more (Actually, not just ire. I want so bad to slap him. I want to inflict physical character on him fucking asshole.) is the fake king. YOU FUCKING POSER GET OFF YOUR FUCKING HIGH HORSE AND FIGHT ME!!!!! (screams) He became a corrupted, guiltless puppet whose selfish intentions ruined the lives of those who actually care for him. FUCK YOU FAKE KING. Just when we thought he was in the right position to help the true king and his lover, jealousy takes over. AIN'T GONNA TAKE MY BABY GIRL'S HEART BASTARD. I hate him so much right now I want to run a sword through him, harakiri style. He fails to see how he would never win Ga Eun's heart. He actually had the nerve to console her after telling her of the true king's "death". FUCK YOU UGH DIE!!!!! In terms of acting, Kim Myung Soo actually played his role fine. While not to the level of his true counterpart (discussed later), he actually managed to bring about this rage within me (for his character).
(Pauses to take a deep breath)
Now, let's go to my babies because HOW DARE YOU WRITER-NIM HURTING THEM GAAAAAAAAAAAH (slaps left and right).
Let's start with our beloved Chung Woon. It's about damn time he confessed to Ga Eun that she was the one to behead her father. (I want to slap the true king for prolonging everyone's agony, but I'll let it slip this time because because because!!! You'll see later.) Can you see how understanding Ga Eun would have been had the truth been told to her all this time? (glares at writer-nim) The fact that she actually comes with Chung Woon proves that. Also, his bromance shone again in this episode, when Dae Mok used him as another bait for the true king to join Pyunsoo Group. WHY DID YOU DO THAT AHHHHHH WHY DID YOU BLIND MY CHUNG WOON! But maybe it is fitting for his guard career to end like this, his blindness as the price he paid for going with the late king's orders. But goodness, who will save the day now?
Another good thing in this episode was how Woo Bo bounced back to his usefulness being a true king's man. The subtle communication he had with the fake king provided him with the answers he needed, and I'm so damn excited for him to execute a plan of action versus Pyunsoo Group. By being fired, so to speak, Woo Bo was placed in the right position to sequester the loyal followers of the true king during his time as the chief peddler. Remember what the true king/chief peddler asks in return, the loyalty of the people he aided as he trained to become who he has been right now? This is the perfect time to call on them. And thank you, Park Chul Min, for being our endearing drunkard. I look forward to your "mental" battle with Dae Mok.
And now. MY BABIES. (hugs YSH and KSH)
I'll start with the true king because damn Yoo Seung Ho, you're giving me a run for my money. This time, we see the true king fight Pyunsoo Group not as a leader, but as a lover. Do I hate him for it, for letting his emotions get the best of him? At first thought, I would have. That's reckless. That's insane. That's not worth it. (This is me speaking with my mind over matter perspective.) But then, watching the entire episode, facing Pyunsoo Group is some sort of rite of passage not just for him, but for Ga Eun as well. I like how dignified he carried himself at the beginning, and how Dae Mok broke him little by little until he was left with no other choice but to relent. He was a gentleman to Hwa Goon through it all, and his standing by his principles and his heart only made him shine all the more. He wouldn't take Hwa Goon because he was a decent person who wouldn't bring about that sort of pain even to his worst enemy. He wouldn't take power that was stolen or taken by spilled by blood. He would not be seduced by power, especially when it stemmed from evil. He would not ascend at the expense of other people, and that's what makes him a good person. I think that is what makes Hwa Goon not appeal to him, because at the core of her kindness towards him is the selfishness that would always be a step away from topping over the edge. We could hate him for his decisions, but we couldn't fault him for wanting what's best for those around him.
And when Dae Mok blinded Chung Woon and he suddenly screamed "Master Dae Mok!" Oh my gosh. I love watching the true king break down. So in character, so true of his vow as the leader of his people.
As a lover, he demanded respect for Ga Eun when she was unceremoniously dragged by Dae Mok's men because in his eyes, she is the rightful queen to his king. He would put her safety first, whether or not he knows that the odds are against him. He would risk his neck if that meant she would not be involved anymore. He took the poison to save Ga Eun, which was his initial intention. At this point, if it were any other actor/person, I would be screaming at how stupid he had been, but YOO SEUNG HO DAMN. He made us feel the depth of his love for the woman who always had his heart, and like any sucker for undying first loves, I succumbed to the storm of emotions brewing within me and cried my heart out.
And Han Ga Eun, the most powerful pawn in the show. The bait to both Lee Suns. The subject of hate and jealousy of Hwa Goon. This episode is another revelation to her, an extension of the trauma-inducing exchange with the true king. Finally, she asked the truth about her father's death to the right person. Finally, she held her own to Hwa Goon face to face (When she was slapped, I was like "Oh no you didn't!" Then when she stopped the latter from slapping her again, I was like "Yeah show her!"). Seriously, Hwa Good had no right after all her actions. Gets Ga Eun's father killed now this? Ha! Going back, I hate the fake king continued to appeal to her by using their old friendship. (One of these days, someone should hand me that asshole's ass.) Now that she would be concubine to the fake king, she would be in the perfect position to make things work for the good. Even if she thinks the true king dead (saving the best for last), I really, really hope they make the best use of her, as the last piece standing. Come to think of it, the queen is the most powerful chess piece right? I shouldn't but I am anticipating some showdown with her on the lead. She is the only hope of the "light" side with everyone thinking the true king dead. From what I could see, she is the best bet of the inner court with Mae Chang and the Chief Eunuch as her guide.
And lastly. Gosh. I know the mourning is short lived, but oh my gosh, did Kim So Hyun and Yoo Seung Ho make me cry like a baby. On the verge of taking the poppy wine, Ga Eun tried to prevent the true king from drinking the poison. The way she told him she would not forgive him for wasting her father's death, then the way she called him His Majesty and telling him that she already knows the truth (I really hate the writers right now for this torture, but I'll take what I can get.) Her desperate cries. Lee Sun calling her "Ga Eun-ah". The moment it hits him that she knows the truth.
The small smile he gave her before drinking the poppy wine (thinking about this scene makes me teary-eyed ugh come on). That small smile reminds me of that scene in Goblin wherein Kim Shin finally defeated the ghost of his enemy and realized that Eun Tak will be safe even at the cost of his immortal life. Here we have two men realizing that they finally get to do something good/save the women they love.
The way Lee Sun fell. The way Ga Eun held the sword to push it out of her way to hold Lee Sun. And that heartbreakingly sad confession. "From the first time I saw you, with all my heart, I loved you." His hand fell. Silence. That look of disbelief in Ga Eun's face. Then her cry. While Lee Sun's body was being carried away, the desperate way she tried to go after him.
WHY OH WHY IS THIS SCENE TORTURING ME
(Also, wow YSH and KSH. WOW. With Dae Mok clapping, you'd think he's clapping for the performance of the two rather than his victory.)
And her disbelief when the fake king confirmed (!!!!!!) that the true king is dead. "I still have so many things to tell him!" Reminds me of that scene in Moon Embracing the Sun when the court members stopped Yeo Jin Goo from running after Kim Yoo Jung as she was banished from the palace when she was cursed upon the request of the Queen Dowager. KSH gutted me.
I cried a lot. I'm so, so exhausted.
Anyway, to close this unbelievably long post, I think what appeals to me about RMOTM is the fine line power creates between good and evil. That the characters who are naturally good remain incorruptible makes me root for them all the more, good writing or not. RMOTM showed us the extremes these characters are willing to take to achieve their ultimate goals.
So to you who reached the end of this post, congratulations. I hope you don't feel as tired as I am composing this.

[shared body]
character: cho sam
summary: a series of what i think happened to cho sam before and after chung myung took over his body, very stream of conscious questions and headcannons i have. might not make sense.
author's note: idk if yall have read the manga called the one within the villaness where the protagonist is the og owner of the body but gets in a limbo within her own consciousness so she is very aware when someone else has possessed her body, she also sees the other person's memories before the possession etc. will get into more details below.
═══════════════
BEFORE
CHO SAM who was probably a child born into a decent household with a roof over his head and food during meals until something happened to his parents / guardians that caused him to be abandoned at a young age. young enough that he cannot defend himself but probably not so young that he doesn't know his own birthname, talk or walk. considering that he might be getting bullied by the older beggar children around him, either because CHO SAM is really easy to take advantage of since he's meek or it's easy to take advantage of him because he's grown up sheltered
CHO SAM born into a decent household means there's a chance he's learnt how to read and write at some point, so there's also a chance where he learns about history and it's there he learns about the war, cheon ma and of course, the plum blossom sword saint. if we base this on the webtoon appearance, CHO SAM might notice that he has similar physical traits as this legendary hero so i don't think it would be far off to assume that in this case, the boy might begin to look up to the plum blossom sword saint as his own personal hero or something close to that. i think it's the type of thinking that would make sense to a child.
CHO SAM who might have prayed to the sword saint and looked up to him by trying to emulate that guy's behaviour in his everyday life from what he knows about the sword saint which was not a lot and vere mostly verbal accounts of someone else's observation which would have likely been heavily embellished, but CHO SAM doesn't know that yet.
CHO SAM on the day he 'dies' finds himself on the receiving end of an older beggar child's beating for some insignificant mistake he's made. i think that CHO SAM would have prayed to anybody out there for help, salvation, anything to get him out of this place because it's worn him down so much.
when the next hit on his head comes, CHO SAM squeezes his eyes shut but when he doesn't feel the pole hit his head, he opens his eyes to see that he's not exactly in control of his body. it's moving the way he's not asking it to, he's speaking in a way that's unfamiliar to him, he's in his body and not all at the same time.
AFTER
CHO SAM learns pretty quickly that something or someone has taken over all functions of his body and he's not exactly been kicked out of living in it either so he's not too sure what to call this.
while it's not immediate, there will come a point in time when the body will assimilate and manage to accommodate the two souls living in it, CHO SAM is the only one between the two that knows of this.
CHO SAM eventually learns that the one who has possessed his body is chung myung, the same plum blossom sword saint he's looked up to like some god his whole life. and at first, he's excited, then he's confused and then now he's a little conflicted. because for what reason is it his body out of everyone else's that gets 'chosen' for this possession? he may never know the answer.
i think that CHO SAM can't do much other than to watch what chung myung does in his body, he might be in awe at chung myung's abilities and probably wonders what else he can do.
(slight tangent) while i think that all of chung myung's skills and abilities he's amassed over the years is no joke, there's another thing that i've been thinking of — did chung myung, to an extent, luck out when he possessed CHO SAM'S body instead of anybody else? like if it had been someone who had lesser potential do you think chung myung would have taken a way longer time to reach the level he is at currently? or would it not even matter because he's got a lifetime's worth of experience so something like a little bit of physical setback is nothing to him? who knows. i'm just pulling things out of my ass
when CHO SAM first glimpses at chung myung's memories, he cannot look away. they've both lived like this for so long that it's only natural that they begin to merge a little. how much of the current chung myung is him and how much of him is chung myung type of thing. it is surprising that none of CHO SAM'S own memories have surfaced to show itself to chung myung, maybe it's because it's not really chung's myung own body?
when chung myung gets injured, CHO SAM obviously cannot feel it, but the sight of blood scares him nonetheless. is it because he feels for chung myung or is it because he is looking at what used to be his physical form getting marred like it meant nothing? chung myung as someone who cares so little for his own well-being that he would push past his injuries to do what he is supposed to almost out of instinct but he holds back and tries to tend to himself every once in a while as though he is reminded of someone's nagging.
CHO SAM doesn't know how to feel in this situation, should he be angry at chung myung for treating his body, their body, so carelessly? again he wonders if this body can even be considered his anymore, or shared together, or has the roles flipped to make CHO SAM become the intruder to this body?
SPECULATIONS FOR THE END
what happens after chung myung accomplishes everything he sets out to do? does he vanish? is he granted entry into heaven where he meets his loved ones that died? will he hesitate to rest in peace?
(if cm chooses to die) : CHO SAM wakes up but for the first time in years he's back in control of his own body but so much has changed and he still feels like a child in this now grown up body so how is he going to navigate through all of that? he's seen all the feats chung myung has achieved and now how is he going to keep up with that precedent?
(if cm chooses to live) : what will CHO SAM do? will he try to make himself known to chung myung or will he accept that there isn't much he can do and goes along for the ride? say some god or spiritualist finally set CHO SAM free and let him be separated from a fate he was never destined to have, he can finally live as he wants but will he leave? nobody in the world knows who CHO SAM the beggar is, but he knows all about the people who have come into contact with 'him' in some way. do they want to know about him though?
═══════════════
end thoughts: i know that it's not a very coherent post but i needed to get the thoughts out my system before i start having brain worms and stop sleeping at night

Trump-Kim summit: The sorry fate of North Korea's diplomat defectors
Image copyright ED JONES
Image caption North Korean defector activists like to float supplies with news of the South towards the North – increasingly something of a dilemma for the authorities in Seoul
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is about to attend his second summit with US President Donald Trump. But as the North inches its way out of near-total isolation and tentatively engages with the world, the question of what to do about high-profile North Korean diplomatic defectors becomes that much thornier.
It can’t be easy. Deciding to defect from North Korea can put your life and those you love in danger. For Pyongyang’s diplomats, who have enjoyed a life of prestige and power, the danger in defecting is that much more real.
These men and women are the Juche ideology foreign front line.
Their main role is to raise capital for the regime, but although they are the elite in their home country, they are unlikely to receive such a privileged position anywhere else. Ambassadors and their staff are told to promote Pyongyang’s point of view around the world, and will often seek out pro-North Korean groups in their respective countries. They also monitor local news, screening TV networks and newspapers for any mention of the Kim family.
The latest development comes from Italy, where the government has expressed concern about the fate of the school-age daughter of Jo Song-gil, the North Korean ambassador to Italy who fled his home in Rome last year. Another high-profile diplomatic defector, Thae Yong-ho, had told reporters he understood she was forcefully repatriated back to Pyongyang.
The ultimate traitors
It’s almost impossible to verify such claims but it does set out just how high the stakes are, particularly for defectors who come from an elite so privileged they are trusted enough to represent the country abroad.
The higher your prestige, the higher the risk in leaving. Such a move is unlikely to be forgiven by the Kim regime – some elite defectors say they discovered that their families back in North Korea were punished, sent to prison or, in some cases, they believe members of their families were shot.
They are global ambassadors for the Kim family, the figures who hold up the interests of the dynasty, in the face of an often hostile world. So it stands to reason – by Pyongyang logic – that dissent while working as a diplomat cannot be tolerated or even be seen to be tolerated.

Image caption Jo Song-gil was thought to have been living in Rome with his wife and children before he disappeared
North Korea views diplomatic defectors as the ultimate traitors – because the humiliation is that much starker for the Kims. And yet it happens.
Han Jin Myung was a second secretary in Vietnam and told NK News that he defected after failing to share with ministry officials the money he made from selling some items. He said diplomats were not paid well, and he received around $400 (£348) a month. His seniors reported him to Pyongyang and he felt he was in danger. He said he was certain he would be severely punished and quickly made the decision to leave.
‘South Korea must embrace North Koreans’
Diplomats who spend time abroad have been allowed to see how other countries live and work. They have gained a taste of another life; their children may have spent time at international schools. This glimpse of freedom may give them a taste for more.
Despite the latest claims about the fate of his daughter, information is still scarce about the 48-year-old Jo Song-gil and his family. They were last seen in late November and are thought to be seeking asylum in a third country – some believe he’s on his way to the United States. The details of this case remain murky and we may yet find out more about what has really happened.
But these high-profile defectors also raise something of a dilemma for South Korea, particularly at a time it is forging a cautious camaraderie with the North.

Image caption Thae Yong-ho was North Korea’s deputy ambassador to Britain
Here in South Korea, such defectors have historically been given protection and for good reason. Yi Han-yong, a nephew of Kim Jong-un’s half-brother, was shot dead outside his home in a suburb of Seoul in 1997 after publishing a book about the Kim regime. His attackers were never caught.
The former deputy ambassador to London, Thae Yong-ho, who defected in 2016, told reporters that he felt the South Korean government should be more proactive – but he no longer believed Mr Jo should seek shelter in the South.
“South Korea needs to show that it is willing to embrace North Koreans,” he said in a press conference.
“But the current situation doesn’t seem to do that. Neither the South Korean government nor its citizens express their intention to rescue Jo and his family after their defection, and I’m saddened by the current situation.”
Defectors from North to South Korea
“We need to tell North Korean citizens that the Republic of Korea is their motherland. And Korea would welcome any North Korean citizens who would want to come to this country.”
But the warmth of the welcome in the South is not guaranteed. Conservative governments have often used defectors to tarnish the North’s image and highlight its human rights abuses.
But in contrast, the liberal President Moon Jae-in is pursuing a policy of engaging with the North and his administration may be wondering what line to take.
The South has long held the ideal that all Koreans are entitled to political and economic freedom. But the North often accuses Seoul of orchestrating these defections to undermine and embarrass them. This is not the kind of argument Mr Moon’s government wants to have right now.
What jobs did defectors have before leaving?
Those who left between 1998-2018
Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry does not hide its outrage and disgust at those who speak out, such as Thae Yong-ho.
Although not specifically naming him, they described him as “human scum” and were critical of the South Korean government for allowing him to speak at the National Assembly.
We asked Seoul’s Ministry of Unification and the Foreign Ministry about concerns that North Koreans were not being embraced.
The Ministry of Unification spokesperson was very careful about the wording of the statement and said its position was that it “will accept all North Korean defectors who wish to come to the South of their own free will”.
Seoul does provide material assistance to North Korean refugees. There are now nearly 32,000 who have made the perilous journey to South Korea. They are aided in their new lives, offered a place to live and and education.
But the Ministry of Unification seems to be concerned about how defectors’ actions are perceived in the North.

Last year, just days after the first meeting between President Moon and Kim Jong-un, one politically active defector was preparing to launch balloons into the North with brochures and flash drives. He has done this for 15 years. But he said he received a call asking him not to.
When the group decided to go ahead with the balloon launch, they were surrounded by police.
Kim Myong Song, a North Korean defector who is a journalist for one of South Korea’s biggest daily newspapers, the Chosun Ilbo, was barred from covering an event at the truce village of Panmunjom. It has been his job since 2013 to cover North-South affairs, but the Unification Ministry said it had to take “necessary steps” because of the “special circumstance” of this meeting.
“It hurts me,” he told the BBC.
“Defectors are South Korean citizens. We left an oppressive dictatorship and came to South Korea, placing all our trust on the democratic South Korean government. However, this government decided to exclude a defector journalist even when the North Korean government did not make a request.
“It makes me feel vulnerable and fear that South Korean government may disown us if it is necessary and they will not come to protect us.”
Potential mine of information
And yet there are benefits to welcoming North Korean defectors, particularly those that come with links to the rulers of the country.

Kim Jeong-bong, the former chief director of Seoul’s Institute for National Security and Strategy, told us that right now, Jo Song-gil would be a mine of information.
“We can learn from Jo about the explanation North Korea has given for its recent diplomatic strategy and what kind of orders it has given to elite diplomats in regards to the last three South-North summits, and the US-North summit,” he said.
“It is possible that Kim Jong-un told his diplomats that he is trying to work with South Korea to gain economic support, or he may have said that he will never give up nuclear weapons even if he is are engaging with US.
“Especially with Jo. His father and father-in-law were both high level diplomats. His father-in-law was a foreign ministry ceremonial secretary, which means he was sitting next to Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il when they were meeting international leaders. It is possible if Jo comes to South Korea, we can fit the pieces of the puzzle together and fill in the gaps of 70 years of North Korean diplomatic history.”

Image caption A North Korean defector pays respects to his ancestors in the North, during Thanksgiving Day. Many leave behind relatives who are at heightened risk for being connected to a defector
Mr Kim believes Mr Jo has gone to the United States and we are unlikely to hear more about his case for some time while Washington and Seoul are in talks with Pyongyang.
“It is very possible that US won’t make any statement about it. When Chang Sung Gil, the Egypt ambassador, and his brother Chang Sung Ho, at the North Korean trade mission in France, went to the US, it kept its silence.
“It is highly likely Jo’s case becomes like that.”
With a second summit between the North and the US just days away, many will consider that a prudent approach.

'U-Quiz 3' Tivengers revealed everything about entertainment and drama
New Post has been published on http://www.whatsupkpop.com/u-quiz-3-tivengers-revealed-everything-about-entertainment-and-drama/
'U-Quiz 3' Tivengers revealed everything about entertainment and drama
The tvN entertainment program ‘U Quiz on the Block’, which aired on the 25th, contained two self-portraits that met the tvN Avengers.
The office of Yoo Jae-seok and Jo Se-ho headed to the Office of the Performing Arts. There was a lot of props such as locks and flashlights, and there was Jeong Jong-yeon, who directed ‘The Genius’ and ‘The Great Escape’.
Chung Jong-yeon PD is a PD that Na Young-suk PD is a “genius.” The netizens also responded to the novel idea and the realistic set saying, “Don’t pay for Young Young-suk PD.
However, if the performers did not solve the problem better than they thought, they were also frustrated. Jeong Jong-yeon, PD said, “It’s not cool. There is an answer right away. If there are nine drawers and only three are opened,” Oh why is it like this? “
Chung Jong-yeon PD’s best option was to meet Kang Ho-dong through ‘The Great Escape’. Jeong Jong-yeon, PD said, “I’m nervous and nauseous on the way to the greening place. However, Ho-dong said that he was nauseous when he was having dinner for the first time and had a meal. I thought I was going to meet people, ‘and said, “My head was awful,” and Yoo Jae-seok joked, “You may have eaten a lot the day before, and you may have done that.”
‘Tivengers’ met with writer Kim Ran-ju and writer Kim Dae-joo. Writer Kim Dae-joo is currently the main writer on Friday Friday night and has been working with Na Young-seok PD for 12 years. Writer Kim Ran-joo is the second writer of ‘Geum Geum Balm’, which became a hot topic with Muay Thai low kick at MBC ‘Infinite Challenge’. It is also a real model of Sung Siwon in ‘Response 1997’.
Writer Kim Ran-joo has worked with Shin Won-ho, Na Young-seok, Lee Myung-han, and Kim Tae-ho PD. Writer Kim Ran-joo said about the characteristics of the four people, “It is not easy to listen to the story at the end of the meeting. But they concentrate and listen. Yoo Jae-suk’s brother is the same. (Jo Se-ho) Can’t you tell me all about him?” “You have to learn the dots.”
Writer Kim Dae-joo chose ‘Yoonsikdang’ as the most memorable program. Writer Kim Dae-ju said, “The program worked well, but there were too many episodes.” “I built a restaurant set in the field, but it was demolished in a couple of days after filming. I cried. How did the program work. There are so many things to talk about when I meet you.” I remembered.
Writer Kim Ran-ju recalled the episode of ‘Totoga’ in ‘Infinite Challenge’ and recalled, “How long have I been waiting for the HOT reunion. It was the longest project in my life, and I couldn’t imagine that I would do it. The moment I peaked in life” .
After lunch, the two met Shin Won-ho PD, who directed the series ‘Response’ and ‘Sage’. PD Shin Won-ho, who directed the entertainment before tvN transfer, said, “It was a time when I was so tired of the variety, so I twisted the writer Lee Woo-jung and said, ‘I think the first edition will always be ruined.
Shin Won-ho PD, who is currently working on a wise doctor’s life. PD Shin Won-ho said, “The title was decided because I wanted to tell you that there is no part you would expect from doing a hospital drama.” “I did a lot of coverage in the medical field, but we want to talk about people’s lives. Our authors have prepared for too long.”
PD Shin Won-ho wasn’t in charge of performing arts from the beginning. PD Shin Won-ho said, “After enrollment, I was in the liberal arts side and asked to go to the dispatch from the performing arts department. I was whispered with PDs ‘Itaewon Class’ and ‘Misty.’ Only Nayoung-seok PD supported the performing arts during the motive. It was different from that. ” “I wanted to,” he confessed, and laughed.
The program I started then was with Yoo Jae-suk’s ‘Kung Kung-ta of Fear’. PD Shin Won-ho said, “I started playing Kung-Kung-Ta, and it was so much fun. People seem to have fun seeing what I made.
The last time we met, Twengers, Lee Myung-han, general manager. Lee Myung-han, director of the ‘Plant Meeting Rose War’, ‘Star Golden Bell’, and ‘2 days and 1 night’, transferred to tvN and became the general manager after three years of commissioning.
Lee Myung-han, general manager, briefly explained about the daily routine: “I look at the ratings report, but I look at the card hidden.
Regarding the difference from direct production, “The biggest difference is ‘Umbrella business’ and ‘Salt business’. When I work as a PD, I only have my program. I have many channels and programs. “It’s ahead,” he said.
Regarding why he was willing to appear on ‘U-Quiz,’ Lee Myung-han, general manager, said, “I think ‘Yu-Quiz’ should be filmed outside because of Corona 19. “I answered.
Writer Lee Woo-jung is the most important person in life. “I met Freelancer and PD for about 20 years,” said Lee Myung-han, general manager. Most of the time, I have worked with me directly or indirectly for more than 19 years.

The merging of the teaching with powerful emotional experiences – Allen Tate Wood
Tumblr media
Allen Tate Wood, author, lecturer and consultant on the cult phenomenon, interviewed at North Texas State University in the summer of 1985.
Tom Waldren: When would the prospective candidate first become aware that this was the Moonies, that this was a religious cult?
Allen Tate Wood: Well, they may never be aware. My wife was never aware. She said after ten days with the Moonies, ‘Thank God you lied to me in the beginning. If you hadn’t lied to me in the beginning I never would have joined.’ I worked with a boy in 1978 who was a freshman at Yale, and he had come out of the Moonies, and he had been in it for 30 days, he’d been in a Unification Church training center in Northern California for 30 days and he’d never heard the name Sun Myung Moon. He’d never heard reference to the Moonies. He was in the organization. He didn’t even know what the name of the organization was. He was told it was the Creative Community Project. But the environment of the cult training center is designed to overthrow you, to overwhelm you and the variables that are operating there are this control. It’s control of communication, control of movement, control of language. Ultimately the attempt to control your thinking.
So if you want to conceptualize what goes on in a training session you can think of it very simply like this—on the one hand is the presentation of the group’s teaching, its ideology. They’re slowly filtering that into you over a period of three days. In addition to that, you have the behavioral regime. The psychological manipulation; the emotional manipulation; the controls; the piercing and penetrating of your defenses; the subterfuge and the deception which is used to get you to give us information about you so that we can use that very information to pull you closer to us. At the very end, you’ve had a lot of powerful emotional experiences. You’ve felt really drawn to this group. You’ve felt like there’s something really positive happening here. We then want to connect up the result of the psychological control and manipulation with our ideology to make you believe that your powerful experiences are the result of the truth of our teaching.
Tom Waldren: So, in essence it’s a breakdown.
Allen Tate Wood: That’s right.
Tom Waldren: And then?
Allen Tate Wood: And then it’s the merging of the teaching with these powerful emotional experiences and in the end we tell you, what’s happened to you Tom is, you haven’t just had a good time, but when you were crying yesterday and you were feeling kind of ecstatic, and then when you were just crying with grief this morning, you were meeting God. God himself is speaking to you through our teaching, through its truth. And at the very end, we give you this existential experience of God himself, and also the devil. And that’s very hard to get around. And we say, throughout the course of the weekend Tom, part of you has been drawn to us. Part of you has felt that this is wonderful, something good is happening here. Another part of you has thought, ‘Hey, wait a second, what’s going on here? This is kind of dinky? This is kind of weird. Why are these people so happy? Why are they so positive?’ We then tell you, that critical part of you is a devil. That is Satan trying to break your connection to us. So you are now at the center of the stage of world history and God himself is calling you to join with him in his work of restoration. To fight the satanic history, to fight communism, to stand for God, truth, the family, justice, peace—you know all these good things. And all you have to do, is just stay for another three days. We have another three day workshop where we are going to go more deeply into the teaching. And what we do is we go more deeply into manipulating and controlling you, into manufacturing these experiences which are now convincing you that you are in the hands of God.
Tom Waldren: So there’s an answer for everything.
Allen Tate Wood: There’s an answer for everything, and we could produce the same experiences with a totally different teaching. The teaching is not the critical thing. The critical thing is the environmental, the emotional, the psychological, the human control that we exert over you through a whole series of steps which are designed to destroy your own self-control. To destroy your autonomy, and to make you feel you have fallen into the hands on an absolute power that is totally competent to manage you and to decide for you who and what you should be and what you should do.
Tom Waldren: There was widespread fear when this became known that this was going on, this type of brainwashing thing, I think mainly from the parents. Did you ever encounter parents coming after their kids?
Allen Tate Wood: Not when I was in the Unification Church, well once or twice. But afterwards, Yeah, I met many, many parents whose children had joined the Unification Church or similar organizations. And their situation is a very difficult one. It’s very difficult to bring aid to people who have joined totalist social systems. In the first place they don’t believe in dialog. And in the second place the teaching of the groups explicitly states that anybody that disagrees with the group is satanic. So the young person inside the group is effectively trapped inside. They don’t have access to alternative information; they don’t have access to alternative authorities who could help them understand what has happened to them. They’re like flies in amber.

You know what I really don’t get about people going so hard for CM? Is that manwol was literally only waiting for him so she could drag him down to the pits of hell. It wasn’t like she missed him or still loved him it was because she wanted to ruin him the way he ruined her. Like what is romantic about that? And he literally kept her alive even tho why would SHE want to be the sole survivor of her people and watch yeonwoo die? But uwu he loved her 🙄 really don’t get why ppl romanticize this
Hi anon!
I admit, I too am baffled by this. His sole motivation for keeping Man Weol alive was to fulfill his own desires. I mean, she came along to kill him, and he was fantasizing about how they could have been together. Which is very ???? Sir how about no?
I do not deny the fact that he waited for a long time. And he brought Chan Seong back from the tunnel, which was, okay, good job bro. But there is no romance in causing your beloved agony. If you cause your beloved pain, that too for 1300 years, then they weren’t beloved to you in the first place. Chung Myung wanted Man Weol and the freedom she represented. But his thoughts revolved solely around his desires for her. Nothing of her choices mattered, or you know, things would have turned out differently. Instead Man Weol got a lifetime of agony and he got to be a firefly flitting around.
I suppose, the way they met was very romantic and that coloured the entire storyline. Also, I think there’s some subtle misogyny at play. A lot of romance tropes in media praise a dude for doing the bare minimum while it’s never the same for the lady. If waiting were the only criteria for romance, a lot of us would be a part of epic love stories.
Instead, by setting up Chung Myung against Chan Seong, we see that it’s not the waiting that counts. Rather, it’s about how much the person cares for you and they they trust in your decisions instead of trying to make them for you.
God bless the Hong Sisters for the way they ended things otherwise I would have been flipping a lot more tables.
p.s - I’m not even sure I answered your question properly anon. I have many feels about this but words are really hard, so sorry  ;___;
