Have you ever taken a moment to wonder what people thought and did prior to the rise of Mussolini and/or Hitler?
I have wondered---what would I have done if I was there during that time? I know many people just blindly followed in the “making our country great” even at the costs of the horrific things they did to people.  Because somehow I felt I was better or more deserving and just "right"?
Maybe you have heard the term fascist or fascism and have wondered what some traits of fascist/fascism are—so you could possibly recognize things to look for, because we have heard over and over how history repeats itself. I know I have tried to keep my eyes open for these things throughout my adult life.(And through this using fascism to include Nazism--as it's a form of fascism, but differences within them exist.) Here are some thoughts and things I've learned:
Businessmen supported the idea of the suppression of socialism, and their support allowed Mussolini to come to power.
From Wikipedia: “The Fascist regime created a corparisteconomic system in 1925 with creation of the Palazzo Vidoni Pact, in which the Italian employers' association Confindustria and Fascist trade unions agreed to recognize each other as the sole representatives of Italy's employers and employees, excluding non-Fascist trade unions.”
Hyper-nationalism, with a rebirth of a nation, is the foundational fascism.Aggressive foreign policies are commonplace.
Violence is condoned by fascists, Mussolini felt violence could cleanse and redeem a tarnished nation. Belief in the force against the opposition.
Prior to everything going down in WWII---they made it out that Jewish people were behind communism and to be wary about them trying to ruin civilization and destroying things as if they were this secret force.  Kind of how they were able to slowly take away their rights, then ban and murder them.
Hitler admired the antebellum South. He wanted Ukraine to be turned into the same thing.
Fascists do not want to make communities safer. They want to reinforce a distinction between us and them.
Charismatic authoritative leadership.Fascism completely embraces a cult leader.Fascists have/use/desire a “lost golden-age syndrome”.
Fascists describe themselves as the bulwark against various evils and menaces to the nation.
The fascist leader is the only one able to solve the country’s problems and all of their political rivals are enemies or traitors.
Mass mobilization of a massive political party.
Fascists purge those that appear disloyal.  (I’ve never seen so many fired in a presidential term---but I’m not a historian—it could have happened, and I just don’t know it.)
You are not allowed to disagree with a fascist leader.Nepotism is not always connected with fascism. It is a form of corruption common amongst dictatorships.
Nepotism weakens our current system of government.

Some people really dont get that silence is siding with opressors and that some people cant be not political because their excistence in certain spaces is seen as inherently political and it really shows. Silence is also violence.
here is a great quote from niemöller(controversial figure but this quote is important)
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Day 29: Sunday January 29, 2017 - “Protest”
Two days of protests at DIA highlighted a weekend of unrest across the country.  I posted yesterday about being “for something” and not just against something - I stood in both as an ally - for those afraid, thinking they werent welcomed or wanted here, even if their citizenship was as full as mine.  And I saw the impact of that as we chanted outside the front door of DIA.  A very diverse group of Americans streamed in and out, and so many people walked out and were moved, especially those visibly ethnic.   A small group with signs won’t do much to create change - but we did so much to spread a message of love and acceptance.  Very few (maybe a total of 3?) reacted negatively - compared to several hundreds obviously moved.  This is what the American Majority looks like.  Chants like “Love, not hate, makes America Great.” and “No Ban, No Wall, Peaceful Sanctuary for all”  - as I watched news of protests at airports all around the country, I was proud to have been a part of it in my small way.
The night before I got home just in time to hear about a planned occupy in the terminal as they expected a passenger that may have been detained has a Stay not come through in time.  It was a great scene, and I had a front row seat.  Included helping to form a circle around some Muslims to pray for peace and some beautiful singers.  The airport allowed them to be there, but didnt allow them to have signs, so they brought roses instead.  My sign were my two fingers which I raised in solidarity trying to wrap my head around why the heck in a free and democratic society any of us would have to protest this kind of bologna where we have people with approved visas being detained on account of the nation of birth.....or their religion.   Hard to say, as it is hard to predict.  But one thing is unaccountably clear after the first week of the Trump administration -there will be no shortage of opportunities to take a stand, and stand for what you believe.  I stand for acceptance and compassion, I stand for being unafraid, pragmatic, and common sensical.  I stand as an ally for the “huddled masses; an ally  for the homeless, tempest-tossed - I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Why District Daily?
The Ministry has fallen. But seriously.
“It is important,” Dumbledore said, “to fight, and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then could evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated.” –The Half-Blood Prince
I started a blog for three reasons. First, I needed an outlet for my frustration. Second, because I could not find a satisfactory blog that was archiving the daily "lowlights" (they are certainly not "highlights") of He Who Must Not Be Named. Third, and most importantly, I created the blog to avoid becoming desensitized or apathetic about Executive Orders or any other Executive action.
On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 authorizing the military to designate areas in which any or all persons can be excluded. In this case anyone with Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast. My grandmother was one of those 130,000 Japanese Americans, that was round up and forced to leave their home. In 1980, a Commission, appointed by President Carter, concluded the incarceration was product of racism.
A famous jedi once said, "fear is the path to the dark side." The greatest problem I have with this President (and I have a number of them) is that he encourages Americans to be fearful and hateful, instead of curious and hopeful of cultures, religions and people we do not understand.
