Sprout @ Amittyville Music Hall - 11.25.2022
Weirdest/most fun job of 2022: Recreating the Misfits reunion poster from scratch for my friend JT. Fonts were matched. Guidelines were used. Jokes too offensive and/or self-deprecating to put on a poster were exchanged via text. Emails falsely accusing openers of serious(ly comical) crimes were sent at 5am.
Anyway, I’m super professional and you should give me money.

The Great Vinyl Purge.
I had a funny feeling during my last music-shopping victory spree. When I furiously dug and came across certain titles, I constantly paused on myself wondering if I already had them in my collection. Dollar records make way for hasty decisions and later regretted when you come home to see those same titles you purchased already in your library.
I audited my shelves to see doubles I didn’t realize I once had. Money well spent if only the first time. After that, you’re donating to your local record stores. That’s what’s called charity. With me buying vinyl faster than a cheetah hunting down his prey, I’m running out of space. I’m not realizing I’m spending money on records I already have, so they had to go. There were many impulse purchases made thanks to low price tags, a kick for the classics, and very little care of the artist other than the year they were made.
There were many duplicates from artists I’m familiar with. Components from my Atari and Nintendo youth in Belinda Carlisle (The Go-Go’s) and Phil Collins (Genesis), jazz-fusion artists Tom Scott and Ramsay Lewis, and an extra from Minnie Riperton. The Doors’ Greatest Hits had to go as I mistakenly bought a copy recently before the purge, and one from France Joli that I shouldn’t have had because I tried finding a song that wasn’t on there.
Not only did I take the duplicates out, but I also took records out of my collection I never listened to. Two titles from The Who and Melba Montgomery that I purchased at an Amityville veteran’s hall left the library because I literally never played them. Doobie Brothers, Nicolette Larson, and many children’s records rescued from a sidewalk dump from people who didn’t know better. They had to go. A few days later I woke up one morning and asked myself why I have almost the entire vinyl discography of Seals & Croft and The 5th Dimension?
And then these three: Al Jolson, M.C. Osso, and Justin Wilson …Meets Jean (John) Barleycorn. Those were three records my dad found ages ago from another stack tossed out for the morning pick-up. That was when I was oblivious to vinyl and record collecting. Hell, we didn’t have a turntable back then. How did I somehow keep them and why did I keep a fucking cajun comedy (?) record? I was better than this.
**********
Now that the vinyl purge was over, what did I do? I had no time creating a Discogs and wait for these records to be sold piece by piece. No record-stores would take them as the children’s records are water-damaged with dry mold. The only other option? Take the easy way out and give them to someone who appreciates them. Why? Friends and family had been charitable to me in the past. A no-longer-staffer of WUSB announced a roll-call for a huge vinyl giveaway donated to me, and later on most of those same records went to Syke. That’s the same Syke who ended up donating me some of his records he found in front of someone’s house; a customer of his who took her entire collection and threw them out in front of the curb. Not me. I give my gifts to a good home.
Once my dad found a collection of polka records and took them home. “What the fuck is this?” I asked him. There’s no way I’d be caught dead and Wee-Gee’d with polka records. Good thing this was right before WUSB’s 35th anniversary. I knew our resident polka lady Theresa was attending, so I donated my stacks to her. Problem solved. Caring is sharing and it goes both way, that is…when you’re not throwing your entire library out in the street.
So I gave them to J-Ro, host of WUSB’s Radio Free J-Ro, archivist, and vinyl fanatic. I dropped them off at the station in October and told him to come get it. He took home Carly Simon’s self-titled, Minnie Riperton’s Perfect Angel, Ramsay Lewis’ Tequila Mockingbird, Herb Alpert’s Rise, and whatever 5th Dimension records he didn’t have already. So that’s only 5% of the stack. As of now, most of it is still there. It’s now WUSB’s as far as I’m concerned. We have the space. Let ‘em deal with it.
Here’s all I parted with to make way for more records and books of my liking. Malcomb Forbes did say: “he / she who dies with the most toys wins.” Sometimes, it’s the nicer shinier ones that get you the victory.
France Joli: Now!
Tom Scott: Blow It Out
Paul Simon: Still Crazy After All These Years
Doobie Brothers, The: Minute By Minute
Phil Collins: Face Value
Carly Simon: self-titled
Minnie Riperton: Perfect Angel
Ramsay Lewis: Tequila Mockingbird
Herb Alpert: Rise
Belinda Carlisle: Belinda
Al Jolson & Oscar Levant: Songs And Comedy
M.C. Osso: Umbra Penumbra
Justin Wilson:  Justin Wilson Meets Jean (John) Barleycorn
Doors, The: Greatest Hits
Who, The: It’s Hard
Melba Montgomery: Don’t Let The Good Times Fool You.
Seals & Crofts: Unborn Child, The Longest Road, Diamond Girl, Closer, Summer Breeze, Greatest Hits, self-titled.
5th Dimension, The: Greatest Hits On Earth, Greatest Hits, Up Up And Away, Stoned Soul Picnic, The Age Of Aquarius, Portrait

Your taste in music is great, what was your very first concert, and what's your best remembered / most influental concert?
Much appreciated, thank you!
First concert was Sting at Jones Beach with the Philharmonic backing him (very LOL now, but it was my high school graduation gift and I was a big Police/Sting guy for a bit)
Most remembered/influential is a tough pick, I’ve seen a lot of great acts in the day. Here’s a list of some I can pull off the top of the dome:
Samhain during their reunion tour and there’s a video where you can see me crowd surfing.
I’ve seen Agnostic Front probably like four times over the last decade with a variety of openers.
Went to Black n Blue Bowl twice (2015 and 2022) and both lineups were stacked.
Neurosis, Converge, and Amenra at the Warsaw (seeing Converge was like a religious experience)
Sleep with Earth’s Dylan Carlson opening at Brooklyn Steel
Crowbar at Amityville Music Hall
Failure and Swervedriver also at the Warsaw a day before I moved into the city (was extremely hungover moving in day)
My friend’s band Heavyhex opened for Militarie Gun, Dazy, and MSPAINT like a year and a half ago, that was fun
Carcass and Deafheaven played a gig in my hometown like right after Deafheaven dropped New Bermuda
108 reunion at Brooklyn Bazaar, I think Racetraitor opened
Sannhet, Self Defense Family, and Cloakroom also at the Brooklyn Bazaar
Self Defense Family at Saint Vitus for the recording of their live album (I think that might be my favorite, just because I own the record and it’s nice to have been a part of that experience)
TUI with No Warning, Wisdom in Chains, Down to Nothing at Revolution Music Hall
Negative Approach at the Acheron
Mayhem and Incantation at Revolution also
Poison Idea and Sheer Terror at AMH. Jerry A gave me the mic and I got to sing Just to Get Away (despite flubbing more than half the lyrics)
I’ve seen a lot, and I’m sure I’m missing some, but these are probably the big ones in my history

It’s the halfway mark of the year and for the most part ‘so far, so great’.
Let’s start off by saying that I’ve made at least eleven record-store excursions across Long Island and Brooklyn. It’s been nothing but fun. I waited four years for this due to money issues, the pandemic, and late tax refunds but damn it was so worth it. I’ve experienced the best unusual stock at Academy’s Brooklyn and Manhattan locations and spent two days digging through the unorganized heap that was Amityville’s High Fidelity. I’ve yet to make that 58 mile / 80-minute drive out east to Innersleeve Records but I know that’ll be an experience. I know I spent way more than I envisioned, but believe me when I tell you that I’ve really expanded my music library. I’ve caught up on alternative essentials, jazz / fusion, hardcore, punk and Eighties on 45’s, golden-era hip-hop, cassettes, and even black metal. I’ve also scored a few total surprises on the way. Followers of Our Lady Of Omega know when they see it.
Just like last year’s High Score Pinball Arcade, imagine my amazement when I learned that Smithhaven Mall opened up a real-deal retro-arcade of all those favorite Eighties and Nineties cabinets from childhood. Only there would I’d be standing next to one of my favorite hip-hop artists (R.A. The Rugged Man) and his two children playing the machine next to me. Or how about the time I attended Boy Harsher at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg in April and attended an unreal showcase for Sacred Bones’ 15h Anniversary at The Knockout Center?
I’ve finally met my Coney Island family for Easter after not seeing them for more than two years. Dominican Pete from the Brentwood era came to visit from Scranton after not seeing him in more than a decade; rolling up and getting lifted in my residence while we both listened to Musical Youth, Corrosion Of Conformity, (A Band Called) Death, Tears For Fears, and Pure Hell. That pales in comparison in seeing my blue-eyed ginger friend Candy, also from the same era. It’s been ** years since I last seen her, but a promise made to visit her family restaurant on the East End ensured we’d play catch-up.
My health has also been a lot better. Wellbutrin XL helped take most of the focus away from the persistent intimidating demons of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. All my focus and determination turns to my performance on the sales floor where I do have a couple of associates threatening to take away my attempt at winning the Triple Crown (most revenue made, most credit applications, and most tech support memberships). Vacation time has been more vital and precious than ever and I plan on taking shorter but more frequent vacations. My overall health is great to where I don’t feel nervous about it and that contributes positively to what goes on the sales floor. Consistent gluten-free snacks, dairy-free drinks, protein, fruit smoothies, and egg bowls are now my marquee staples. But nothing, or no one, has helped more than staying in touch with a Roman goth girl whose experienced everything I’ve suffered through. She’s taught me trust, to not be afraid of triggers, t.m.i., and bad news. She knows exactly how I feel and gets how I think because she’s been there like I have. She also got me back into Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode which I needed. No question that I consider her a most-valuable player, perhaps one of the greatest ever.
As for all things Omega, Omega WUSB is now in its 10th year and is currently having its most ambitious Summer broadcasting season ever. Ω+ is back to some sort of consistency, reminding me of how much I enjoy putting my heart and candor into it. Digitizing my 500+ cassette archive is well underway and I look forward in finally getting back into all the purchases I’ve been putting off listening to and reading.
Strikeouts for the first-half of this year? Not many. Not counting the daily rudeness, lack of courtesy, and forced interactions from the neighborhood muppet customers that comes with the territory of being in a toxic community. I missed out on celebrating WUSB’s 45th Anniversary and once again had no plans for the 4th of July. I can’t lie to you when I say that anxiety, depression, and loneliness are still strange bedfellows that still insist on living rent-free, but those lifetimes losses and misses don’t bother me as much so as long as I don’t think about them. I’ve been feeling a little bit more irritable, impatient, and impersonal when it happens with no thanks to my clientele. My all-time favorite ginger? She’s still on my mind. It’s a bad beat that she hasn’t stopped in as much, but the one time I’ve helped her out so far was total fucking heaven.
There’s still more work that needs to be done if I want to win the year. The job search has been on my back forever and I’m looking for that one extra moment of free time where I can finally start practicing HTML. Every day it’s a fight to maintain my personal and mental upkeep, and last time I checked I’m still that greyhound chasing that electric rabbit lure. Only by typing this out did I realize how good I have it so far. I’m not planning on losing it. By year’s end, I want last year’s full house of Jacks over 10’s turned into this year’s four-of-a-kind with Kings.

Some famous serial killer here might have been caught. They arrested a suspect yesterday // oh that's good! ever think of planning a long islanders 1D club night? Lol
Random switch up LMAO I love 1D nights. Amityville music hall has 1D nights occasionally. Mulcahys has some nights too, not 1D but I’d imagine they might at some point. The city has them too but it’s a bitch to go to imo

OKAY SO THE SHOW WAS FUCKING GOOD It was fucking good but it was kinda weird? So for some reason Big Baby Scumbag is on this tour and the aim was to get there after we assumed his set was. We got there an hour and a half after doors and apparently he just never played? Action/Adventure were the first ones to play and they started like 5 minutes after we got in. They were good but i havent been super into them, and they felt way better live for me. Good set. After that we went outside in the back since it was warm and obviously loud inside and intended to spend most of In Her Own Words' set there since i wasent super into them. So turns out when we back in for the last part of their set it was just the vocalist and a guitarist. No idea if they explained the whole thing at the start but he said something about their van getting fucked up so idk what happened with them. Still vocalist has a good voice, enjoyed what i heard. Belmont was SO SO SO FUCKING GOOD. Looking at other setlists it looks like they dropped Deadweight and they did 731 as an encore which was SOOO good. The breakdown in Pain Now sounds even better than i thought it would SO fucking heavy. The only thing i wished was that it was more of a metalcore/post hardcore/etc pit instead of just a push pit. Thats just a preference of mine, and also because push pits leave me winded so much easier lmao. ONTOP OF THAT the first song in the pit i slipped a bit on my bad leg and my knee cracked or something and i knew i had to take it very very slow. I didnt get as much pit time as i wanted because of that. I didnt notice much until walking back that it started to hurt and i was limping a bit as i was walking. It kinda hurts when i move my leg at the knee or walk but its not that bad. I'll just pop some ibuprofen or something. ALL IN ALL IT WAS FUCKING GOOD. I actually just wish Belmont had a longer set i wish i got to hear more older shit. More stuff of Between You & Me, Vicissitude, hell even either of the stand alone singles from before the self titled. BUT THATS JUST ME BEING GREEDY. I had a smile on almost the entire time. This is the shit i live for.

Sunhaven: “Night Swim” (2021)
I followed Keith Ginex’ musical path when we were co-workers at a mafioso supermarket jack outfit. He invited me to come see his band, Champ, at Rockville Center’s Vibe Lounge where our other co-worker Rich was a part of. A few of us also attended and so did Keith’s friend Tobasco, who I later realized was my town librarian. Champ was a five-piece metalcore / hardcore hybrid that everyone came to see play and they blew the roof off. I was totally into what they had to offer and saw them play a few more time. They had their falling outs with other members involving domineering drama-queen girlfriends and embarrassing answering-machine messages. None of that stopped them and their replacements from chasing the dream. They’ve changed their sound without sacrificing their power - and also their band name, too. (They’re now Pariah.) The last time I seen them was right before the pandemic at the Amityville Music Hall, Long Island’s hardcore haven. The bar was packed and the turnout was high. Tobasco and her friend Pez Dispenser showed up and so did Keith’s bestie Kryssy who worked with us. Everyone had fun, we took pictures, posted them on social media - you know - 2020 stuff. That was the last show I went to before the entire world closed down.
Imagine my surprise when last summer I learned that there was a third incarnation of the group. They became Sunhaven, and this time they drifted away from their beastly metalcore / hardcore sound and more towards melodic pop-punk. The “Night Swim” video dropped it was the most magnificent thing I seen last year. Tom Flynn produced a clip so breathtaking that it's made an unforgettable mark on the band and everyone else invited for it: a shining example of what a young summer day spent in Long Island suburbia.  Everyone’s attending a backyard pool party having the time of their lives; all smiles and looking their best. We see Kryssy looking around in the thick of the party when she meets someone. There’s attraction, a dip in the pool, and then finally an embrace - all what makes an unforgettable summer moment that would permanently burn in young minds everywhere. Ginex flies high and belts out some astonishing vocals as he and the rest of Sunhaven’s sound soar up to amazing altitudes. Even though their previous incarnations material have been posted on Bandcamp (as with this single and last Autumn’s debut Slow Dance), they chose to put a lot of chips in on the Sunhaven name, having their debut professionally produced and even had radio airplay on Long Island’s rock radio station 94.3 FM The Shark.
Sunhaven won that summer hands down. I’m proud to have Keith as a friend and have Sunhaven represent our local scene. If they don’t go on to bigger and better things after this then the powers that be failed us all. And for anyone who wants a better representation of Long Island that’s not about Karens, miserable washed-up fishwives, or endless Seinfeld or Billy Joel worship? Well, this is it.
