So this piece is the “Pemaquid at Noon” and it is a 12 x 20. I like that shape canvas because it allows a little bit more of the composition fitting with the broad spaces that the sea provides. I’d actually like to do a very large pieces with the ocean vista. But one has to have a client first so I’m working on it. Preparing some panels today for oil painting and thought I'd post a mini tutorial. Here are the first two steps: STEP 1: use stainable wood filler to patch any dents, knots, splits or other imperfections in the wood. Then use a sandpaper block to sand off the excess until the surface is flush with the panel. I like the foam sanding blocks because they will give a flat and uniform surface. If your panel is rough in spots, use a medium to fine grit sandpaper block to sand the entire panel to a smoother surface. STEP 2: Take a can of Bullseye Shellac in clear (I only had amber, but clear is preferred) and dilute it in half with Denatured Alcohol. You want it to be a somewhat runny consistency. Be sure to mix it well to dissolve the shellac that might have settled at the bottom of the canister. My can was half empty so I just added my denatured alcohol straight in. Usually, with a brand new can, I use an empty paint can from the hardware store to mix up my half and half shellac. Using a wide chip or bristle brush, apply the shellac in thin, even coats across the entire front and sides of the panel. Watch for drips and smooth out any pooling of the shellac. Make sure you do this with gloves on and in a well ventilated area! Once the front is somewhat dry to the touch (about 15 minutes) flip over and coat the back and all of the bracing the same way, avoid puddling and coat well. You might notice your panel has warped a little after coating the front, coating the back will help correct this and it stabilizes the wood from absorbing too much moisture over time. Flip the painting back over and allow to cure for an hour or so. Then with a really fine sandpaper or steel wool, lightly sand the front of the panel and remove dust with a tack cloth or regular cotton rag. You should not feel any rough patches, if you do, sand lightly and add another coat of shellac, and then sand again. WAIT! You're not ready to paint on it yet! So yesterday I painted out on Pemaquid Point LIVE with the Plein Air Painters of Maine. I was a little late because I had a zoom meeting in the morning. I did a live session and painted a piece that resulted. They won’t let me post it to the IGTV but I’ll post it later today on my website. I shortened it down to 28 mins 🤷‍♀️ I often say that painting is like meditation you look at the surface then you look deeper than you look deeper then you look deeper and you get a greater understanding as you go. And not everybody is at the same level and that’s OK. It’s also a metaphor for life in general. First you look at the big picture and you can see all of the ocean and all of the sky and the rocks and then you break it down into smaller and smaller parts. Color and line and the composition and the way you want to focus your attention. And then you start working on the niggly details which would be like the tasks you would probably have in your day-to-day life but if you concentrate solely on the little niggly details you miss the big picture. Notes on the day: The parking lot was completely full, people were having picnic lunches and sitting on the rocks and watching the ocean. I slipped in between a couple of other artists who were already painting on the rocks. I didn’t interrupt them. It was a beautiful day as you can see and perfect weather couldn’t have asked for better. Light breeze and Cool air and yet warm enough that I didn’t have to wear my jacket. A lot of people milling around. I will put up this piece on Pemaquid at Noon when is finished and put it in the AR viewer on my site.
