Cependant, la formation vocale Les Starlettes - qu’il a lui-même montée en 1957 - sera celle qui allait faire connaître le jeune maestro du tout Port-au-Prince musical comme arrangeur (la seconde phase de sa carrière). Si ce chœur avait exécuté certains airs de l’étranger (des songs, des blues, etc.), Herby lui-même reconnaît avoir trouvé plus de satisfaction dans l’interprétation de certains de nos thèmes folkloriques et traditionnels. One Saturday afternoon Marj was reading in the living room and I decided to use the elliptical and play a record so I tried to pick something she might like. Tatum’s fantastically fast and decorative playing, recorded here in medium-to-low-fi with a kind of annoying distortion in the higher register, uh, well, I chose wrong. I failed.
