#gender is soup #sci speaks #i'm so sorry i know you might hope for something profound but... i think when i'm put on the spot like this i can't say anything really #i think whatever i am is definitely pervasive in everything i write #but like.. gender means something different to wade than it does for peter. #just like it'll be different for everybody. we make different associations based on our experiences and our trauma. #like.. wade associates femininity with love. because of his mother. associates masculinity with violence. because of his father. #peter associates masculinity with responsibility. because of uncle ben. associates femininity with confidence. because of aunt may. #i think there's all kinds of reasons why we choose to present the way we do. and what gender means to us. #just like we'll associate a colour with something. or a smell with a memory. it's complicated. #i don't think i'm some kind of expert on gender things but... i just find it interesting to explore. the psychology of it. #i don't think it's supernatural. it doesn't come from nowhere. but it should be a playground. #i don't think anyone in this world should be restricted to a certain role to play. i want to try all the roles and see how it fits. #see how well i can play them. #maybe because i haven't found one that quite fits. so i want the opportunity to try whatever i can. see what feels right. #i think it would be fun to be a wife. i think it would be fun to be a husband. i think it would be fun to be a firefighter. i think it wo #shrugs. different outfits for every day. different roles to play. #today i'd like to try... #i think it's like kids learning how to be adults by playing pretend. by playing roles. #i'm learning more about myself and other people and fitting into the world by trying on different roles. #kids playing house. you be the mom. i'll be the dad. yadda yadda. #i still feel like a bit of a kid who hasn't figured out how to be an adult yet. so i'm still trying out roles to see what fits.

I've been thinking about this more and more recently (or, rather, am letting myself think about it), and I've finally decided to start learning the languages some of my family would have spoken before emigrating and it's kind of crazy.

Children of more recent immigrants have said this so much better, but it's such a weird feeling to know that you can't speak the same language your family can or did. It's such a weird feeling - to be locked away from your own family, your own blood, and for so many people, it is a form of violence and even genocide done unto them.

Honestly, if you're a child who's got family who has or did have family who spoke languages you don't or can't... Learn them, if you can. It's a surreal experience, and it's kind of liberating, in a way. It's teaching me more about parts of my family, how they might have spoken to me if we had the chance to live in the same era.

I will admit I am not a huge band person I tend to be more of a "pick whatever random songs sound good" person, so I can't recommend any good bands. I also listen to Ska Punk, which is a subgenre of Ska... and Punk. So I am not a good authority on Ska songs to listen to I am just someone who is banned from being passed the aux cord...

Here's my disclaimer, though: I am not into music subcultures I just listen to whatever sounds good (and jazzy punk with horns sounds good), so I could be giving absolutely awful music recommendations that anyone who is especially into Ska (and more specifically Ska Punk) might find egregious. I personally just grab whatever song sounds good and add them to my forever long playlist.

Also the Jabberjaw (Running Underwater) song from Pain used for the Cartoon Network Boomerang Groovies is probably the reason I enjoy Ska punk so much, and it has been in my playlist for years now:

I have successfully boiled my problem with most of the izzy reads that i hate down to a sentence:

Frankenstein annotators vs Dracula annotators FIGHT (this Ask brought to you by the Frankenstein weekly annotator takes)

For real, there do seem to be some blisteringly cold takes going on in academic circles.

I think Frankenstein suffers more with people tending to identify harder with either Creature or Victor, and thus skewing everything the other one does in order to demonize them. They get plenty of material to work with either way, because both are extremely flawed individuals. Both are self-absorbed, make bad choices, cause harm to those around them. Both also are extremely depressed/self-hating, do not want to hurt anyone until they're well caught up in a self-perpetuating cycle of hatred, feel trapped and victimized by the other. I think a lot of the power of the book comes from being able to sympathize with both of them and spot so many moments of "if only-" while still feeling that the way things turned out was somehow inevitable. It's just ingredients of a great tragedy!

With Dracula, it feels more like people are trying to distance themselves from the characters. By reducing them to plot points, archetypes, and the like, these people stop engaging with them as characters. And as such, they try to force in negative nuance where it wasn't intended in the original, or view them only as a stereotypical Frigid Victorian Male (Jonathan) or say "this side character didn't do a lot so maybe they were secretly evil" (Quincey), or just get... super, super into horny symbolism everywhere in a way that actually saps away a lot of what makes the characters themselves. In doing so, they miss the heart of the story, which despite being a horror novel actually has some really uplifting stuff.

I haven't read tons and tons of academic takes on both books, but based on what I have read, I think those are the trends that seem to bring about some of the really weird or hostile takeaways. Getting too attached to a particular character in Frankenstein, and trying too hard not to care about the characters in Dracula. Opposite in a way, but both ending up missing a lot of heart/nuance that I think you can find in the original works.

I feel there also is an element of a kind of feedback loop in both cases. Each book has had a major impact on pop culture, but in ways which tend to diverge significantly from book canon. I do feel that some of the simplifications and reversals start out as either derivative of (Dracula must have a sympathetic backstory) or defiant to (actually, Frankenstein is the real monster) the film/pop culture versions. This as well as responding to so many other established lines of criticism and types of takes that have become almost a "standard" and which are somewhat removed from the actual canon of the page.
