Ranking Every Wolfwood!!

happy wolfwood wednesday! i've ranked every wolfwood and it very quickly got out of hand and turned into more of a character analysis/meta. it was really fun and helped me better understand why i love this guy so much!

i hope you guys enjoy and that my autistic rambling makes sense!

1. trimax wolfwood. yeah he’s perfect. nothing else to say. god bless

while i can’t fit everything i love about him into one post, just know that i’ve written almost 30,000 words in wolfwood (and vash) character studies. so when i say “i like trimax wolfwood” that really means “i am fucking obsessed with trimax wolfwood”.

he’s the perfect mix of silly and heartbreaking, funny and serious, annoying like an older brother, deeply kind, so so painfully human; and a PERFECT foil to vash. simply phenomenal writing.

my only complaint would be that his tits are not on display like they are in the 1998 anime. but i can appreciate the subtly, so this doesn’t detract from his otherwise flawless score.

2. 98 wolfwood. omg hiiiii hehe twirling my hair ohh he’s so handsome what an absolutely beautiful design for him. his nose, his spider-esque shape, his TITS…… they even kept his little whiskers!

on top of an amazing design, he’s a very good balance of silly, irritable, playfully annoying, and serious! he fits pre-trimax wolfwood to a T!

but, as trimax progressed…

he’s cool. too cool. he has too much pull. wolfwood should NOT have swag. genuinely it is imperative to his character that he is, and i say this as lovingly as possible, a fucking loser with no friends.

wolfwood is a deeply traumatized man. he isn’t nearly as charming as we, the audience, thinks he is. no one laughs at his jokes, his insults are crude and immature, he embarrasses himself in front of literal children…

god, he is so painfully awkward. and who wouldn’t be in his situation? to have your childhood stolen and forced to grow up as a weapon? not allowed to interact casually with anyone else during the most important developmental stage of your life?

he's just not suave like tri98 wolfwood is. so, while 98 wolfwood is an excellent character, he doesn’t entirely read “wolfwood” to me. similar to how 98 vash is good on his own, but he’s just not “vash”. this is, of course, the result of making an anime out of a manga that wasn’t even 30% finished at the time. while i don’t understand the reasoning behind this, i know that nightow desperately needed the funds the anime brought in, as well as the motivation to keep making trimax, so i have to simply make peace with the dated characterizations tri98 has.

but don’t get me started on the milly situation. really a godawful writing decision, idk who approved that mess.

3. tristamp wolfwood. he is so bullyable. he’s like a sopping wet cat. absolute fucking dweeb.

i debated this for a long time—whether i should rank tristamp wolfwood above tri98 wolfwood. and i asked myself, do i love tri98 wolfwood because he’s a good character and is similar to trimax wolfwood? does he even remind me of trimax wolfwood at all? well, not really, he’s very clearly based on pre-trimax, just like tri98 vash is.

ultimately i decided i do genuinely just prefer tri98 wolfwood, but i felt the need to defend tristamp wolfwood because i see a lot of fair criticisms but also really dumb discourse throughout the fandom about him. so here’s my attempt at trying to address these:

so, there are some things i really enjoy about him and some things i really dislike; and, unlike vash, most of these criticisms are not a result of time/pacing issues. they’re easily fixable.

like, for the love of god he NEEDS to get sillier. they got the loser part down, but he’s a bit too overtly sad in tristamp. i think he will be more like his trimax self in season 2, but wolfwood’s humor is in-part a coping mechanism and important to his character. he’s an older brother! he’s fucking annoying! he thinks he's funny when he isn't! we do get a little bit of this with him and meryl, when he's tormenting her at the campfire, and that’s what i want to see more of. even if he’s playing it up, he should be working on getting their guards down, convincing them he isn't going to betray them.

since tristamp takes place in a weird prequel sort of canon, i get that he would look/act younger than he is in trimax. i think he was modeled after the teenage wolfwood we see in the flashback scenes of him training for the eye of michael, where he’s noticeably less outgoing and more reserved.

however, this doesn’t change the fact that he WAS silly as a kid in trimax, before his “teenage angst phase” (hate to call it that when it’s more like a “realizing he’s going to die by the gun and not being able to do anything about it” phase). but he’s still a lot quieter and reserved in tristamp as a kid, so i think we really need to find a good balance here in the trigun adaptations.

another example of an easily fixable issue—i really hate how they did the “vash sees how kind wolfwood is” scene, in which wolfwood gives money/snacks to children. in tristamp, wolfwood already knows the kid is zazie, which tells us absolutely nothing about his character. this scene is almost entirely worthless, only good for reminding vash that he should eat, which gives tristamp its own not-as-good hospital yuri scene.

and, so, about the elephant in the room… i don’t think he was whitewashed. let me try to explain my thought process.

tristamp, as far as i can tell, doesn’t seem to be taking any inspiration from tri98, whose wolfwood is very explicitly a brown man. trimax wolfwood i feel is a bit more ambiguous in his skin tone, which alternates between dark screentones and completely uncolored pretty much at solid 50/50 odds. just fairly inconsistent overall, even on the official manga covers.

but this doesn’t mean wolfwood is white in tristamp, and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his aquiline nose. the notorious scenes of him in the suns, looking white as a fucking sheet, shows us how a 3D environment can diminish a character’s silhouette and distinctive features.

compare this to scenes of wolfwood in a dim environment, or to the 2D scenes of child wolfwood and livio that i can't include bc i'm only allowed 10 pics. he looks MUCH better, much darker than vash, and as they both should appear in such lighting. it just doesn't add up—he should be much darker in strong light if they followed the same color values:

SO, even though i feel like all of this is more of a technical issue rather than malicious whitewashing, that doesn’t mean i think it’s acceptable. it looks fucking awful, and the lighting system needs major improvement to work with darker skin tones.

and, like, at the end of the day, wolfwood isn’t canonically latino, and he doesn't really have a consistent skin tone either. it’s a great headcanon, one i partially share, but it’s not canon. the only ethnicity that could technically be considered somewhat canon is japanese, as wolfwood was based off a japanese singer named tortoise matsumoto. you can see this resemblance best in early trigun!

and i really need to defend his nose!!! a lot of people say he lost his nose but he didn’t!! i promise it’s there!!! another victim of his 3D model, you can only see his nose from the side or in the 2D frame after he gets his shit wrecked. see how clearly he has a very well-defined nose when he’s hand-drawn? this is what i mean when i say a 3D environment can drastically alter a character’s important features, as much as i otherwise adore the animation for this show.

also, if you think nightow would let studio orange get away with not including his nose, you got another thing coming.

in conclusion, while i think tristamp wolfwood is a great start, he’s just not quite there yet. but i have immense faith that the next time we see him, he’ll look and act a lot more like he does in trimax!

i know this is true, because there are already some shots in tristamp where i’m just like. oh yeah. there he is. that’s wolfwood. there's the guy i love so much

4. badlands rumble wolfwood. ah, now here’s a great example of overt whitewashing. no lighting excuses this time, just blatant colorism.

even if he wasn’t ghostly white, there's just something about his design that makes me viscerally uncomfortable and i can’t pinpoint what it is exactly. he’s just so… angular. he has no scruff, no kitty cat mouth, his eyes are very oddly shaped, almost no eyebrows... i just really hate looking at him!

his ONLY saving grace is how mentally ill he acts in this movie. and his tits. otherwise i don’t really have much to say about him!

“How many times do I have to tell you-” Wolfwood spreads his arms wide in a desperate gesture to convey how often he's tried to instill an ounce of self preservation or simple urge to pause to think things through in the two, fairly unashamed, individuals sitting on the edge of bed. It is fairly hypocritical of him, but at least he can say he sometimes tries to consider his options, favorite of those being “none of my business, walk away”, and then gets dragged into action by Vash. Or even Meryl.

 “To let locals sort out their shit on their own!” 

He runs his fingers through his thoroughly messy mop of hair in frustration. Awaits the usual rebuttal, the sort he already heard on the way to this hotel room, like ‘they let us stay for free because we found the stolen Thoma!’ and ‘I know you wanna take part of the race, too, Wolfwood, don't act all indifferent’.

But it doesn't come and for a brief moment he wonders if he's finally gotten through to the pair, but that feels more unlikely than second coming of Jesus (one could argue that has already happened, that he is sitting primly in front of him and Wolfwood is -).

“Are you even listening?” He snaps, pointing an accusing finger at the pair and earns a mhm and a mumbled I’m sorry in return.

It takes Wolfwood a second to track what has distracted his partners (partners! It still feels foreign, impossible, achingly beautiful and even more scary) so thoroughly. Their gazes are glued to his chest that is quite exposed on the best and worst of days, but his shirt’s buttons seem to have lost the fight against his wild gesturing earlier and popped open almost all the way to his navel.

“You are not listening!”

The two nod in agreement to whatever scolding they think they're receiving, all faux humility, while their gazes leave a hot path down his stomach, following the trail of dark hair. It is only when he flexes his pecs that Meryl and Vash look back to his tits and then face in an ideally synchronized move, like cats who have been enamoured by a bouncing toy.

Oh, he will give them a bouncing, alright.

Wolfwood crosses arms across his chest, blocking the view and the two have some sense to look a little bashful.

“I am sorry, but it all ended well and we only got shot at once,” Vash puts on his best pout and Wolfwood thinks that he could stay angry, but it feels like a lot of effort compared to personally checking the two people he loves are fine and take advantage of the room they'd been given for the trouble as Meryl had pointed out.

So he drops his arms, flexes his pecs again and watches both of their eyes widen and darken, Meryl's pretty pink tongue darting out to wet her lips, as he steps closer, the overflowing energy of his worry sliding lower in his abdomen, turning to simmer there as Wolfwood reaches for them.

As an Asian person living in the West, I’m aware of the different kinds of colorism in different cultures

I’m really tired of seeing people saying canon Wolfwoods are not dark enough for them. Yes there are variations in his coloring but in no iteration they made Wolfwood white (no, not even in BLR)

Not to mention other characters also have variations in their color design. Nightow’s Vash color pages are inconsistent too; sometimes he’s much darker

There’s a lot to unpack here that I don’t feel coherent enough to even begin

thank you for sending this, i really appreciate it. i'm not asian, so it really feels like not my lane to post about, but i notice all the time how reductive the conversation's become, and it really gets under my skin.

wolfwood is a japanese character, or at the very least designed that way. one of the big pieces of Trigun Trivia is that wolfwood was inspired by a japanese musician, tortoise matsumoto.

his skintone is inconsistent even within individual iterations but he's pretty much always drawn with monolid eyes. even in BLR and especially in stampede.

and that's just... not part of the conversation? somehow?

like. yes. colorism. but stampede wolfwood is immediately identifiable as an asian character, he still has a distinct nose bridge, the undertone of his skin is olive/yellow even when he looks pale. he's not white. he's asian.

and then in english-speaking fandom specifically, often explicitly with a dismissive sneer towards wolfwood's stampede design, wolfwood is very racialized in a way that distinctly does not depict him as asian, which i would bet money is because of western stereotypes about asian men. western wolfwoods are usually latino, or just... ambiguously brown.

(and of course there are asian wolfwoods among those, but his monolid eyes tend to be considered less important to preserve than his tits and his nose, along with stuff that was fully invented by fandom, like his body hair, and the exaggeration of his tits and nose, that rosary... weird how that happened.)

and... like.... there's nothing inherently wrong with character redesigns. or focusing on the parts of the character you find attractive when you draw or write them. i know a lot of specifically latino wolfwood came from latino fans. fanon wolfwood is a very handsome man. i see why so many people like him.

but it is. a bit fucking funny to have a whole host of people calling studio orange colorist and racist for wolfwood not being brown enough and then turning around and making wolfwood Fandom Papi Of The Year.

the vitriol towards stampede wolfwood feels just that much more disingenuous when the language is only surface-level about colorism, and the real complaint is that he's not attractive enough as a sex object.

Actually I'm thinking about this. They gave Razlo three Punishers but Livio doesn't have any. He also didn't seem to know what those other people were there for. It really comes across like Razlo's violence is their secret most valuable weapon... which makes Livio kind of just an extra, or like the living embodiment of that mask he wears; a living soul who may as well be dead for how he has no place in the world and for how he is treated. Meanwhile, Razlo has only known violence; his only goal is to protect Livio and this is the only way he knows how/finds any value in; they only further affirm his cruelty as a necessity for survival. It's just. Ugh. Way to screw these kids up more.

Sorry I have no words for the part where Wolfwood is thinking about Vash and their philosophies. I just. Augh. Oh, to be irreparably changed by someone who validates what you wanted so badly to hope for but couldn't...

Another question, since you like asks and I like silly things!

I wrote with Rev and came to the conclusion that L/R would be like a Chicken and a Goose, if they were birds. (Chicken, while cute, they eat everything and a goose is selfexplanatory, those aggressive watchbirbs!).

What birds would you assign the cast?

I'd go with s cormorant for Wolfwood (black and used as a hunting tool, but intelligent, even able to count). A crow would also make sense, due to their intelligence and their care for their group. Wolfwood... tsundere crow due to trauma...

Kea for Vash (one of my fave birbs), a highly adaptable, curious and playful parrot. And just by their nature, they cause destruction all around. :D They even have some red feathers under their wings!

I'd go with a wood grouse for Milly, since they are one of the biggest galliformes. While it is not domesticated, it is related to chicken and I think that fits her.

Meryl is difficult to pin down. My first thought was budgie, since when she gets grumpy she reminds me of how my female budgies have been. But then I thought... TIT! She has to be a tit! I think a marsh tit would fit her even by the looks. Those little birbs, they look so cute and innocent... But these little things are spicy.

Wolfwood: I do like him being a crow. Good survivor bird. Very tough, but also very funny. That or a condor.

Milly: Golden eagle. She's big and she's fierce. But also works well on a team, like the eagles that are used to hunt wolves.

I need more bird options! Augh I thought I knew more birds off the bat.

ok ive watched approximately half of stampede now and i am gonna say my thoughts so far. Firstly. BUGS!!! BUGS BUGS BUGS BUGS WORMS !! ZAZIE!!!!! YES!!!!!! they fixed so many of the things that bugged me about the sandworm and general creature design (we dont talk about the tomas) literally perfect the life cycle is so cool ZAZIE!!!!!!

Also the animation is good i guess.

i feel about how i expected to which is that i like it on its own terms but i find it really annoying as an adaptation. for something supposed to be more faithful to the manga it REALLY isn’t and the pacing is awful, it just frontloads all the lore on you and has none of the breathing room that the manga gives for characters to have meaningful emotions, and none of the long intro of 98 that gets you used to the people and world and introduces the important story beats over a longer period of time.

Meryl: i don’t particularly dislike her design on its own but i think it’s a moderate downgrade. i don’t know why they made her look so young in such a specific kind of doll looking way!! why does she have makeup stop that!! 4/10

Vash: again i dont hate his design on its own but COME ON MAN!! i keep saying they twinkified him, i will be clear, vash was already a twink, but now he’s evne more of one. he is also just way less charming and goofy looking. legs not long enough. no belts. no assless chaps. 2/10

Wolfwood: UGH. boring design on its own, terrible redesign. no tits so why’s his shirt open. why is he white. where’d his nose go. i hate his pants and shoes why are his ankles so defenseless. fucking twinkified him i HATE him no wonder every fanartist just subs in regular wolfwood. 0/10

Livio: WAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH ok but again inoffensive design on his own, nothing special but i dont like, hate it. however. just kind of looks like an entirely different guy. hopefully they will bulk him up later but he still just. Looks off you know? dont like him. 1/10.

Honestly he hasn't really thought about it, even as things are currently. It's like,he's already gotten all of this, Asking for more still seems kind of unfathomable at times. Especially since that sort of thing would have basically been a near impossibility back home, anyway. It would be a lie to say it's something he hasn't thought about at all-- actually, the thought had been nice-- but it's just something that seems so out there for him that it hasn't been a consideration.

It varies! I like to think they're pretty equal depending on the situation. This is especially true since they're both so stubborn, lol. Once Vash has gotten something into his head that he wants to do, there are very few things that are going to stop him or change his mind. However because he feels safe and they understand one another so well it's also relatively easy for him to go head empty no thoughts and let ww take care of him-- which is a huge deal honestly considering his entire mentality. ( specifically for this iteration of him, anyway; fic and stuff is a whole different ball game ). That stubborn streak also applies when he feels like being the one doing the taking care of though, lol.

What are your thoughts on the Trigun reboot?

the big tl;dr is that i'm enjoying it a lot!! there are a couple things that i'm like, not suuuuper thrilled about but overall: it's a yes from me!

(for clarity, i was a huuuuuge fan of the '98 anime and watched it with my mom as a kid! i read trimax later in life and adored that, and now the og anime is like. fine?? but comparatively falls flat for me now as an adult in my 30s. i've rewatched the anime only once as an adult but i've reread trimax uhhhhh three times in the past year alone lolol)

i'm gonna bullet point this bc that's just how my brain works best:

i love the animation! there have been a few instances where it felt off, but overall it's been a feast for my eyeballs

i do hope millie makes an appearance for meryl (so they can be girlfriends, as is only right) but her absence really doesn't break trigun for me bc uhhhh y'all, her and meryl have relatively minor roles in trimax and straight up disappear for like, volumes at a time

also i really hated her random romance with wolfwood in the 98 anime even as a kid and i will never forgive it for that

i do think the pacing is a bit fast and i wish they either had longer episodes or more episodes to let it breathe a little! not entirely plot-wise because i actually like the reveals so far we've gotten because it's keeping even long time fans guessing for what's coming, but just for the relationships between the characters

like i would like more casual interactions between the four protags, and more vash & wolfwood getting to know each other before we jumped right to them butting heads so aggressively over morality and killing

but i do love that it also heavily showcases the consequences of vash's actions (or inaction)

because as meryl pointed out during the nebraska fight, he isn't actually doing anyone a kindness, he's just running away from pain

i am also sad that they took wolfwood AND livio's tits by the looks of it

BUT YEAH like!!!! i am enjoying it a lot overall!! i have a few gripes with it but i am so fucking happy to be watching trigun again, and as much as i would adore a 1-to-1 trimax adaption like they did with fma, i am really enjoying it being a retelling because i genuinely don't know what's going to happen!! it's fun!! i'm having fun!!

also there's a really emo thought i had about all trigun adaptions just being different lives for everyone and they're just caught in a loop

i also love the fact that it's screaming that it's a passion project. that people who love the source material are all working on it, with nightow. they're bringing back VAs for both japanese and english versions, fans are animating and voicing it, it's amazing and shows how much love is going into this series, and i'm so glad to be able to experience it again

I've gotta go to sleep but like i do love vash the stampede, i in no way think hes a flawless, like hes a creep to women which is the biggest flaw of the entire series, which sucks bigtime. but the art style of trigun is just so fucking good. like to date its my favorite like low tech post apocalypse and def my fav desert post apocalypse. i think they do the western thing very well also. and like its just so fucking cool where they take their art style and how much they do with such a simple and old premise.

vash being the classic, 'i refuse to take a human life no matter what' is done really well but like they do such a good job of juxtaposing it with how cringe and fail he is, and that is also a quality thats been done to death before and since in other anime. and im not really into many anime but ive been exposed to a lot of them through friends. but they do such a good job of like slowly turning the character to show more and more of him through the episodes and like it never feels like theyre not revealing more of him as a person but it also never feels like theyre just going through the motions and doing rhe same thing twice but more or twice but with a twist like every other show does

and then they give you wolfwood with his tits out for jesus and he he has no problem killing, just like everyone else. then you find out more about vash and youre like shit i see youre doing the age old oh he was so human and taught us how to be human even though hes a monster. but thats not human, and this guy has so much goddamn love in his heart for humanity and it literally tears chunks off his immortal body year by year, just because he refuses to cause harm

and like the show never tries too hard to make you feel that, i never feel like the tone or the characters were just tools to pry my heart open to these feelings, the show did such a fucking good job of just letting me feel how i wanted and even though thst was its intent, the atmosphere and plot and characterization just get you there and the show gets you there so gently and just coaxes the emotions out of you so incredibly patiently, all while never being boring. which is fucking incredible

and then theres wolfwood, who when met with the superhuman and met with this thing thats as close as anyone has ever glimpsed of something beyond the human, like vash is closer to god than anyone living, and hes taken with him just like everyone else is. but wolfwoods a hot priest who kills when he needs to even past this higher powered up dude pleading constantly with everyone to settle things without killing. and eventually, patiently, gently, he listens and he tries to do the thing that the show has shown us but never really told us clearly or pointed to, that the superhuman is the only one anywhere who does this. and wolfwood dies like anyone anywhere would if they tried this. vash is in many ways not human, the human who tried to live up to the extremely human ideals dies and the superhuman lives.

but ... eventually the superhuman, who youve watched be in love with humanity for like 20 episodes and youve watched him try to live as a human as much as he can, he fails and he has to break his code and act against his most closely held beliefs. he doesnt die after this, hes maybe never the same again but not extremely, but hes just had a little piece of his soul defiled so that the people he loved were okay. and then he just has to keep on going, having lost something, and having lost

and he learns so much about being human, by losing, by giving up you ideals when the stakes are high enough and its awful but you keep on going and you dont abandon those ideals but you also don't abandon those people

and so he goes on, having had his soul tread on, having been broken, and so much hasn't changed even with so much having changed. and he is human and he knows love and it fills him even after life shatters him, and he still cares, and hes got a cool gun for an arm

Binge-Watching: Trigun, Episodes 11-14

In which the past catches up to us, Vash almost steps over the line, and Millie carves a brighter tomorrow.

Blood Runs Thick

I feel like there’s a tendency in mainstream criticism to look down on supposedly “goofy” fiction in favor of “serious” storytelling. According to such thinking, attempts at levity only serve to diffuse the respectability of any given story, dumbing it down for the childish masses, while the only true storytelling is that which seeks to be adult and realistically emotional. You don’t have to look far to see this kind of attitude in action. How many people praise the shit out of the Nolan movies solely because they discard all traditional superhero signifiers in favor of a gritty, police procedural tone? How many of the people still screaming about The Last Jedi claimed that the comedy moments like Luke drinking green milk from a alien’s tit are a slap in the face to the venerated legacy of a film franchise about magic space samurai? Obviously, I think that mentality is bullshit, and as I talked about in my recent anniversary post, the reason I’ve come to love anime so much is that it allows itself to be weird and goofy and juggle multiple different tones. Being goofy doesn’t mean a story can’t also be serious; it’s the moments of light that make us care when the characters face dark situations, after all. Having multiple tones over the course of the narrative captures the human experience much more fully than committing to just being serious all the time. Goofiness is important, possibly even essential in some cases. Goofiness matters in telling engaging, multifaceted storytelling.

Because here’s the thing about goofiness; just because a story is overall silly doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have the potential to freak your fucking balls off.

Trigun’s been building to this moment for a long time, the moment where its serious side really steps into the spotlight and burns the goddamn house down in its wake. This show has always been aware of the darkness underlying its characters, the history and secrets driving its seemingly wacky cast. And now, Vash’s past has finally caught up with him in ways we still aren’t able to fully process. The arrival of Legatto Bluesummers (I swear, this show has such good naming sense) slams a splinter into the narrative that makes the mirror glass crack and shatter, scattering razor-shards shards across the pavement. Even just his arrival on the scene is stunningly terrifying, punctuated by the show’s stellar tension-creep score and episode direction that leans heavy on harsh, almost sharp atmosphere that illuminates the world in chilling, dark colors. It feels like the universe itself has gone out of step with his arrival, even though we still have no idea what his deal really is. And Vash’s reaction to his presence seals the deal; he is driven to anguish by this guy. The implication of who he might be awakens a darkness inside him I never expected, a sense of raw, cold fury that made me lean back in my seat and whisper “Fuck” to myself just to calm down. This isn’t even righteously-determined Vash anymore. This is a furious, boiling-blood Vash we’ve never seen before.

This is a Vash who doesn’t try to build things up.

This is a Vash capable of tearing shit down

The Stampede Awakens

And the rest of the episode pushes him to the breaking point, pushes him beyond the boundaries of the person he was trying to be, pushes him into almost betraying his morals and striking out in pain and fury and blood. Holy. Fucking. SHIT. It’s not like we didn’t know he might be capable of this. Even back in episode 11, it was clear from the act he put on that he could tap into dark, dark, dark emotions if that’s the act he needed to portray to keep as many people alive as he possibly could. But the assassin after her pushes the one button that was keeping him from tipping over the edge before: he kills people. Slaughters them. Pointlessly. Cruelly. Countless innocent people gunned down in the streets, all for the sake of taking down Vash the Stampede. After Vash tried so hard to save them, tried so hard to take everyone out of harm’s way, tried so hard to carry the target on his back away from where others would get caught in the crossfire, he failed. He outright failed, and people got slaughtered. And the rage of that failure, writ in fire and brutality, drove him to punish the criminal responsible, punish him with anger, punish him with the psychotic robot arm that only seems to activate in moments of true panic. If he wasn’t able to keep things from crumbling down, then he would become an agent of destruction himself to punish the ones responsible. It’s a gut-wrenching, nail-biting sequence, watching the hero we’ve come to know and love almost give up on everything that makes him special.

But at the last moment... he stops himself. He refuses to take a life, even a life as rotten as the assassin. He refuses to give up on Rem’s belief in life’s infinite possibilities. Even as justified as it would have been, he keeps the anger from boiling over at the last possible moment. God, I can’t begin to describe what it was like to release the breath I had been holding in for so long. Vash came so close to utterly breaking, but for now, he’s pulled through to the other side. He’s still carrying Rem’s dream with him, still fighting to build the world up instead of tearing it down. But the path he walks just grew a hell of a lot darker. He’s going to need all the light in the world to keep from straying from now on. Here’s hoping he’s got the strength to see it through.

Climb Into the Light

Thankfully, as dark as things might get for our favorite bounty hunter, he’s still got plenty of light right alongside him to keep the shadows at bay. And nowhere is that better exemplified, of course, than with Millie. She really is the most lovable character of the bunch, to the point where even a jaded asshole like Wolfwood can see it. Hell, she spends the entirety of episode 11 pretty much giving him a crash course in all the ways that optimism is Good Actually, her undaunted spirit crashing against a complex situation with the strength of an ox. And like he says, she makes it look so easy. She’s not like Vash, who is always straining and pushing to find the right path toward a better tomorrow; she just knows she has to be good, and she commits to being good with simple confidence that puts every other character to shame. Whether she’s shaming a hooligan for backing out on his family, ending a chess game with a single perceptive move, play-acting house with Wolfwood to get them past the bad guys undetected (”Secondhand smoke is bad for the baby!”), or just staring at a positive scenario with unfiltered starry eyes of joy, Millie carves an example for everyone else to follow, pointing the way forward down an increasingly cloudy path. I hope y’all learn to appreciate her, because she is a rock you can always rely on.

-”Oh my, I’m about to go down in flames.” Okay, who’s voicing Wolfwood? Because he is having a ball.

-”Excrutiatingly pleasant, honey.” This episode is a delight.

-”That’s true, but we still want to thank you.” Woof. That entire scene was danging right on the edge of disaster.

-”Lord, what the hell am I doing here?” I’m gonna miss Wolfwood. He was such a great addition to the cast.

B - A pairing youinitially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind

By now everyone knows how I came toJesus with Sherlock and Molly (Sustain, basically), so I won’trehash it again.  It took me a while to decide if this qualified, but @soyeahso gave me the nudge (not on purpose or anything, more likeshe walked by me and the breeze caused me to trip and fall, slapsticstyle) to finally see what this Reylo business is all about.  Ihadn’t even bothered with the movies (because fuck Disney) until shewrote a fic I wanted to read, so I had to watch them to understandwhat was going on (full disclosure: I still haven’t read the ficbecause I got ideas and I don’t want to inadvertently absorbsomething that came from someone else until I get my head around themmore firmly).  

Ngl, I don’t understand what the puritypolice are so up in arms about over the pairing.  Like, sure, I getwhy they don’t like Kylo (I don’t like Kylo, but he’s still acompelling, textured character and I see a lot of potential in theredemption story/ backstory) and where some of the criticisms arecoming from.  But real talk: the way the stories are set up, they’regoing to end up together.  It might be tragic, but it’s going to beconfirmed as a romance.  I can’t see the franchise building it uplike they did just to be like “nah, they’re not into eachother.”  I mean, maybe it’ll go out on something like “Bendecides to become a sexless Jedi monk to repent for his past whileRey is too busy playing Fagin to a clowder of force-sensitive urchinsand fighting whatever’s left of the First Order to even poop withoutreading Death Star Mark 18 plans and force-projecting to scrape Porgleavings off the hull of the Millennium Falcon while on the shitter,”but they’re going to at least address the feelings clearly beingtelegraphed by both characters.

C - A pairing you havenever liked and probably never will

I mean, Sherlock and Irene just doesn’tdo it for me, but I’ve read a few fics years ago that made me hatethe idea less.  Another pairing I just can’t get into as a seriousthing is MorMor.  I mean, if it’s just crack, I’m a tits-out,anything-goes shipper, but as a for-real thing, I don’t even likeMoran as a character (mostly because I’m hung up on sticking to canonas strictly as possible, and canon Moran is not the guy people ficabout).  Others, in other fandoms: Sam/ Gabriel in Supernatural,Vash/ Meryl in Trigun, Nathan/ Duke in Haven (and Imean, I love reading about two dicks touching, but I never got asexual vibe from those two like I have with some otherstrictly-bromance-on-screen slash pairings), Kurt/ Blaine in Glee (do not get me fucking started; Ryan Murphy is a coward and let his thirst for Darren Criss ruin a different ship that could have been groundbreaking).  I don’t really like MCUanything (except the Thor movies, I liked them a lot andRagnarok made me feel like I was six years old again in thebest way possible), so none of that does anything for me, canon shipsincluded.  There are probably more, but I can’t even remember all the fandoms I’ve read fic for.

Z - Just ramble aboutsomething fan-related, go go go

Switching gears again, I’m reallyenjoying the 13th Doctor.  I stuck it out for a few seriesafter Moffat took over, but I just hated it.  I won’t get into it,but I didn’t even like the Victorian interspecies lesbian detectives,even though I would normally be all over that shit.  It’s Moffat.  Ijust can’t with him when there’s no one around to temper his…him-ness.

But 13.  I like how she’s the virtuouspart of the Doctor, but she also has just a hint of sharpness/abrasiveness (past plain old assertiveness) and I think that’sconsistent with 9 and 10 (don’t know about 11 or 12 because Idisliked 11 so much I never made it to 12).  I like how they’re notplaying up her gender at all.  No cheap laughs, no talk oflimitations, no sudden personality change to make her signal morefeminine.  I love that she’s blunt, but not mean.  She’s not a mom oran older sister or sexualized in any way and it’s just so refreshing. I’m not so into the new look of the TARDIS, but it does give me avery early-80s low-budget scifi vibe, so it’s not 100% terrible (Istill like 9 & 10’s TARDIS the best; I was into the aquaglowiness and organic vineyness of it, like some kind of alien templereclaimed by nature).  And the companions are all interesting (thougha bit one-note, imo, but we’re only a few episodes in and sometimesit’s nice to have someone clearly defined by a few consistent traits,rather than a trainwreckeverything-to-everyone-as-long-as-the-plot-mandates-it character likeMoffat excelled at creating).

So yeah, I’m really happy with the wayit’s turning out.  I had a good feeling about it beforehand, becauseI loved Broadchurch and Torchwood and I was not disappointed with what we got.
