I get really frustrated when I see people characterizing impulse buys as "self-care".
Self-care isn't buying something unhealthy with a high unit price because you have a food craving when you look at it in line to check out at the cashier. Self-care isn't buying an overpriced, crappily-made piece of clothing that you don't need and will rarely wear.
Self-care is making sure you are well-fed to begin with so that you don't have the food craving to begin with.
Self-care is buying something that is both tasty and healthy. Don't buy that coffee drink or candy bar.
Self-care is buying clothing or shoes that are comfortable, practical, and well-made. Stuff that both looks good and feels good, that meets a need in your life, and that will continue looking and feeling good for many years of use.
Companies work really hard to try to get people to make impulse buys that are basically a rip-off. The item is itself typically junk (low-cost to produce, examples would be candy, sweetened coffee drinks made with various syrups, or fast fashion) and also overpriced for what it is (often when there is a whole bag of them for sale in the back of the store for a lower unit price, or with clothing or shoes, a ton of them for a fraction of the price in thrift stores or for sale like-new on Poshmark.)
People underestimate just how much these impulse buys can affect your finances. For one there's the simple fact that you're paying more for something you could get much cheaper if you shopped around and bought it more mindfully.
Also, in many cases the purchase itself doesn't even help you. If you're eating empty calories, it isn't actually nourishing your body. You will be just as hungry later, and you may have harmed your health. Medical expenses tend to be much more costly than food. You may actually be costing yourself more in the long-run by buying and eating junk. Impulse-bought clothes may just take up space in your closet until you give them away or throw them out, or they might decrease your quality-of-life like uncomfortable shoes or clothing that looks good but is too cold or too warm for when you'd want to wear it, or they might just wear out super fast.
Because the purchase itself is somewhere between near-worthless and actively harmful, you often end up just as needy in the long-run so you end up spending more because of the impulse buys.
If you really want to use "retail therapy" as self-care, try to think holistically. I definitely treat myself to luxuries sometimes. For example I might splurge on salmon, a fish that is expensive but healthy (high in omega 3 and vitamin D, two nutrients most people are deficient in.) Or I might buy myself a new pair of sneakers, a model that I know is super comfortable and well-made, in a color I like.
Ways to break out of impulse-buying cycles:
Journal and write down when during the past week you have had food cravings and made impulse food purchases. Go out and buy healthy snacks such as nuts and fresh or dried fruit, and pack and carry them with you so you have food on hand in those situations where you made impulse buys before. Alternatively, batch-cook and pack freshly-made food items in a container and then eat them when you get hungry so you aren't hungry when faced with foods to impulse buy. You can save incredible amounts this way. A $2 container of peanuts at ALDI could last you for weeks as you snack on it and avoid buying $20 or more worth of junk food from vending machines.
Do an inventory of your wardrobe and shoes and accessories, and write down any gaps in it. Start looking proactively for things that you need but don't have. Go to thrift stores, and/or shop for them used online, or better yet, look for them at clothing swaps or in local online groups where people give free items away. Go into retail stores before you are desperate for an item, and try items on but think carefully about the price. If something is what you want, but expensive, right down the brand and model and then shop for it online, or go back to the retail store later in the season to see if it went on clearance.
Journal and reflect on anything else you impulse-bought, and try to replicate the same process of the above things. Was the buy meeting a craving or need in the moment? If so, find a more sustainable, cheaper way to satisfy that need long-term. Also for any durable / non-perishable goods you sometimes impulse buy, do an inventory of what you own and what you need, and then when out shopping, keep an eye out for what you need and avoid things (or at least get much more selective about price and quality) for the things you don't need.
A lot of breaking out of impulse buying is about changing how you think about buying things and about self-care.
Buying things can be a form of self-care but there is a right way to do it. The right way thinks both about price and about the effect of the item on your life, and involves only buying things that both improve your life and have a good price.
Learn to feel good about passing up expensive items. See that shirt that you just tried on and looks fantastic on you, but that has a tag of $54, and then think about those two similar shirts you bought for $8 each in a thrift store recently. Think about how you could buy 6 shirts for the price of that one. Your $54 is worth more than that shirt. You want that money, you love having that money in your account. You love being financially secure, financially stable. That is way more important to you than getting that shirt you don't even need.
You feel good passing up the item. That's how you break out of impulse buys.

Dealing With the changing Face of "Normal"
Tumblr media
"Normal"! What on earth is this concept of normal? I think the best description I ever received was, "What everyone else is, and you're not!" I've always described life around my home as "my/our version of normal, whatever that is". For me, "normal" has always included a sense of routine, a certain amount of sameness every single day, the "normal" way of doing things at the usual time and place. Then change comes along and reminds me that as a single mom, this concept of "normal" is actually, highly relative and if I don't adjust and accept that "my normal" won't be the same as other families out there, change would be very hard to deal with. Whether you've recently become a single mother, or you've been a single mother for a long time, no doubt your concept of "normal" has had to change too. Sometimes we have to adjust our perception of “normal” before any true, lasting change can be engaged in or even considered. Sometimes, “the way we’ve always done it” is no longer the best or most expedient way to do it anymore. Life has a way of throwing things at us that require change to adequately deal with. Change is a difficult word for up to a solid third of modern society. It is a threat for some. A difficulty for others. Some types of change require time, effort, and/or money to accomplish and those requirements are not always available the moment change barges in. Change arrives for various reasons: Someone dies and family or work life must be changed to accommodate the gap left behind. Health fails and change must take place to function in a manner conducive to healing or simply moving forward in a new way of life. Locations change because of going to school or accepting a new job and change must take place to accommodate the move. Prices rise and fall, forcing changes in how available earnings are spent. These are just a few of the circumstances that tend to force change in a person’s life, whether or not that change is wanted or unwanted. Nothing makes the concept of dealing with change more relevant than the year COVID-19 hit the world stage! Truly 2020 will go down in the history books as the year that forced modern life to reconsider how they do things in a very sudden, in some cases drastic way. How we paid our bills, how we schooled our children and how we did our grocery shopping were instantly changed! Prior to COVID's entrance, the idea of online shopping for groceries was still considered a novelty and a high-ticket convenience. That all changed in one week in March of 2020! Back in 2018, I came across a photo someone took of a list of foods someone else had made for themselves to avoid. The comments attached to this photo revealed a battle for change that many nutritionists, dietitians, health food gurus, and others have been trying to win via educating the public for possibly going on 2 decades now! The perception of a normal grocery list screamed quite loud as I saw junk food, sugary foods, and items I’d only consider the occasional splurge on being touted as impossible to give up. The challenge posted with this photo was asking the public if they could go without these items for 30 days. I sat mildly shocked as I realized I go without those things for months at a time, generally only engaging in them on special occasions such as Christmas, birthdays, and national holidays. This photo was followed a day or so later by an article where a local news source was contacted by desperate parents complaining about how expensive it is to live in my town.  This bolstered another article I read earlier in that past week,  where Kelowna BC Canada was ranked the 11th most expensive place to live, and on a per capita basis with regional incomes taken into account, one of the most expensive in terms of rental properties for families. Both complainers of these article had families, but neither could find homes that would accept their kids, in their price range. This is a research reality on the ground in this town ever since I began looking into it myself back in 2005. Rents have increased dramatically over the past 15 years, creating the situation where change is being forced on people who don’t have the funds to deal with it.  (More recent articles like those two can be found by searching the news source website simply for "rentals" in the top bar beside the google search.)
Tumblr media
However, the question reared it’s head for me, were they seriously having trouble affording life in Kelowna due to income versus expenses, or did they think the items on the 30 day challenge were a normal part of everyday life? If those things are normally part of their weekly or bi-weekly grocery runs, do they also spend money at the local coffee shop every week or every day? Is a meal caught at local fast food places a normal part of their workday routine? I have worked with people who regularly buy their lunch rather than make it at home, so I know there are those out there who think this is normal on their expense list. Do they go out for dinner once a week or even once a month? How do they shop for clothes? Is it important to them to have a different outfit for every occasion, shoes and jewelry included? Are they offended by people who wear the same outfit two or three days in a row? How do they handle their errands? Do they plan routes to save on gas or do they go where ever as needed with no thought of the hit at the gas pump? In other words, are these people struggling because they are trying to live at financial levels they don’t actually see in the bank account? Or are they struggling because none of this is normal and they are seriously broke? Those last two questions are an affront to many people because they don’t want to consider that maybe, just maybe, what they consider normal is not helping their financial situation. Maybe, just maybe, wearing one outfit for two or three days, only having one pair of shoes for several types of occasions and wearing the same jewelry might help their financial goals. Maybe, just maybe, cutting out most of the foods on the 30 day challenge might actually mean other stuff more important can suddenly become affordable. But for any of these maybes to become reality, change has to take place. Time is needed to identify the non-essentials that were once thought to be indisputable. Effort is needed to ensure identified expenses are indeed cut out of the budget to make room for more important necessities. I know for myself in times past, that doing these exercises has always resulted in better financial coverage across rent, clothing, groceries, hygiene, transportation, and debt payments. Costs have risen for me as well. Income has risen and fallen quite scarily at times and made it difficult to pay the bills. The financial lessons I’ve learned as a single mother raising two kids in a town such as Kelowna, has not only allowed me to recover from low income periods better, but has opened my eyes to the financial plight of many in my situation who don’t realize that societal norms are actually harming their ability to make ends meet. Occasionally someone will come along who like one of the parents complaining to Castanet, will realize that the only way they can make ends meet is to sell stuff and cut back. While they were cursing the thought of having to do that, I’ve lived that way! I’ve even contemplated having to do that in more recent times as well. Change can be an adventure, or it can be a threat. It can be viewed as a doorway to better things, or the iron gate swinging shut on one’s dreams. The perspective is entirely up to each person facing it. Time, effort and finances are freed up for better things when unnecessary stuff is removed from the picture. Modern society is a slave to materialism. Toys big and small require maintenance to keep in running condition. Homes and properties big and small require maintenance to stay structurally healthy and useful. Special care clothing takes time and money to keep in optimal condition. The less you own, the less you have to put out on such maintenance. The less you put out on maintenance, the more you have available for needs, health concerns, and emergencies down the road. This goes for time, effort and finances. Change happens so much easier when all three of those criteria are adequately available.

You can learn how to begin changing your own perception of “normal” and discover lost money in the process, by signing up to take my 3 month coaching program: Taming the Coin. Sometimes, a person won’t know where to find the funds until they have completed the first month of the program, then it will dawn on them where that money was hiding and they can continue more confidently toward a deeper understanding of where their funds are going, why they are going there, and how to better spend their resources in a manner that comes closer to meeting their daily, weekly and monthly needs. Time and finances are needed to discover the effort necessary to make required changes to live better on the income currently coming in. Kelowna is constantly being touted as a two-income town in order for families to survive here. My kids are now young adults and one has a head injury he’s recovering from. Neither are able to move out on their own yet and have found it cheaper to pay the room and board I’m asking, than to attempt getting into a rental situation here. Yet somehow over the years, I was able to raise them on one income that was generally seen as less than the required amount to live on. I’m not saying it’s easy to make ends meet in Kelowna or even where you live, but I am saying with a financial scaple in your hand, it is possible. All it takes is a shift in perspective regarding what is and isn’t necessary, what is a need versus what is a want, examining spending habits, bills and transportation norms. Check out Taming the Coin and see for yourself. Read the full article

How To Be Poor, Written By Someone Who Has Never Been Anything But.
1. Overestimate what is demanded of you. 2. Pride and shame are commodities are for the rich.  You can't afford them. 3. If it is offered strings free, take it. 4. Take samples.  If it's only a bite, it's a bite more than you had before. 5. Dumpster dive.  Great for finding clothes and food.  As stated above, shame is for those that can afford it. 6. Pick bottles.  Even if cans and bottles are worth pennies, that's pennies more than you had before. 7. Pick up spare change you find on the ground. 8. Keep your eyes open for things that can be useful.  Pony-o's, bobby pins, lighters, ETC. 9. Check candy wrappers, bottles, ETC, on the ground, sometimes they're sealed and full. 10. Ask for discounts. 11. No matter how old your kid is, they are always slightly younger than the cut-off age on the discount menu, or bus fare. 12. The library is your friend. 13. Going out is expensive; unless it's free, you're not going. 14. Budget. 15. Figure out when the sales are, then go shopping, even if that means going to eight different stores.  You may only end up saving ten cents, but that's more than you had. 16. Find out when your store is having sample days, senior appreciation day, ETC.  This goes for banks, store openings, whatever. 17. Go to the food bank.  You have to ask if they have any baby formula, pet food, ETC.  They are not mind-readers, they need to know your specific needs.  You also have to ask for peanut butter because some people have allergies. 18. When going to the food bank see if they have seasonal hampers. 19. See if nearby places of worship givie out hampers. 20. Go through alleys, keep your eyes open for things that you can use or sell in a yard sale or pawn shop. 21. When you go to the blood bank, whether you donate blood or your turned away, you're still allowed to have a drink and a doughnut/muffin.  Sometimes they'll let you take one for the road. 22. When getting free soft furniture, Lysol it.  You need to kill the bacteria and bugs in it if there are any. 23. Find out what local weeds you can eat.  Dandilions and knot-weed are both edible, but be careful because people spray them.  Every part of dandilions are edible.  You can make a coffee substitute with the root. 24. Ask people if you can pick fruit from their trees, promise to be gentle with the trees.  The same with rhubarb. 25. Give up smoking, coffee, sweets the most part, instant meals. 26. Learn to cook. 27. See if you can make it.  Generally it's cheaper if you can make it yourself. 28. $3.25 for a loaf of bread, and $6 for ten K of flour, $4.70 for a jar of yeast.  That will make about twenty loaves and you'll have enough yeast for the some of the next month. 29. Use old fashioned rolled oats.  They're healthier than quick oats and taste better. 30. If you're friendly with neighbours, when you're making your yummy homemade bread, see if you can sell them a loaf for, say, fifty cents.  It will help you recoup your losses. 31. Sometimes expiration dates mean precisely jack.  Be willing to risk getting a little sick to figure out how far past the date you can go.  *Note* If the meat is greenish, the eggs smell funny, ETC, don't eat it, you will die.   Unless the milk is actually mouldy, just use it in cooking. 32. Even if it's discounted, don't buy bloated or rusty cans.  You will die. 33. All stores, especially convience stores, throw away perfectly good food, I.E., jars of Cheez Whiz.  DON'T CLIMB IN TRASH COMPACTORS. 34. Waste is a sin.  Supper before last is still supper unless it went bad.  You have a frying pan for a reason. 35. Just because there is a bad spot on a piece of fruit or whatever, it does not mean that it, itself is bad.  You have knives for a reason. 36. Find one pot meals, because you don't have many dishes.  Cast iron frying pans are pricy, but they last generations.  You can fry bacon or bake a cake in it. 37. Find out the difference between an investment and a splurge. 38. In winter  you'll find a lot of winter and clothes.  Check for bugs before claiming it, wash in hot water. 39. When you can, store up some stuff before having a yard sale.  Check bylaws where you live. 40. Just after Christmas, Channuka, there's a lot of ornaments, clothing, plastic trees in good repair, thrown away. 41. If you are harrassed while picking garbage, you are, in most places, legally allowed to do that as long as if it is not on their property.  If they say that they're going to call the cops, tell them the phone number.  If you're worried about being harrassed by the cops, it generally takes about seventeen minutes or longer for them to show up.  *Note* In nicer neighbourhoods, the reaction time is quicker, conversely, the worse the neighbourhood, the reaction time is lower. 42. There are three modes of transport; bus, bike, foot.  Taxi's are for emergencies only. 43. Offer services that you are capable of doing.  Shovelling snow, baking bread, ETC. 44. Sometimes offering to help can be very rewarding; you maybe fed, you might be able to claim the bottles after a dance, or take left-overs home. 45. Eat other people's leftovers if you're not squimish. (Don't eat where their mouthes have been, eat around that spot.)  *Note* If you're caught doing this in a restaurant, you will be booted. 46. When you move into a new place, do check spaces for forgotten goods.  Same when getting second-hand clothes. 47. Wear your clothes until they disintergrate. 48. Learn to sew. 49. When picking bottles, avoid at all cost bottles with foil balls shoved in the necks.  These are homemade bombs and they will at best severely disfigure you. 50. Go to swap meets.  Start a swap meet. 51. Every place you live will most likely be a slum, and the landlord will screw you seven ways to Sunday, as well as the rentalsman.  You are poor, you don't matter.  Keep fighting though, because sometimes you actually win, and every conquest helps not only you, but others. 52. When checking out a place to move into, take pictures with time stamps if able, and as many witnesses as you can manage, same when you move out.  If you can get the landlord to sign something that state they know what's wrong with the place, all the better. 53. If you have a social worker, Because it's one of your needs and it usually falls within their guidelines, arrange a home visit after you have moved in/out and cleaned the place, but not handed in your keys, get them to come in and walk them through the place, making sure that they note the condition that it is in, because they're going to be your most powerful witness. 54. Know the laws that effect you. 55. If you're a woman, see if there's something like the Elisabeth Fry Association in your area, because if you get arrested, they'll get a lawyer for you as well as assist you to the best of their abilities. 56. The police are not your friends.  They are more likely to screw you over than the prostitute on the corner. 57. Find out what foods/meals are healthy and cheap. 58. Find out who your friends are, and don't always be asking them for a free pass.  They won't be your friends for long if you're a sponge. 59. Coupons are your friends, use them.  Call companies, tell them about the products you like or don't like, and they'll usually send you coupons.  If it doesn't sound like they're going to offer any, ask.  Print them off, even if it means copying the coupon to word and pasting it several times.  Twelve coupons are worth more than one. 60. Always check your till receipt and change, sometimes mistakes are made and you get charged for the wrong thing.  Sometimes you'll get reimbursed for the trouble. 61. Bargain.  Don't be afraid to ask for things. 62. Junk food is not always cheaper than healthy food.  Shop around. 63. Find out what you can live without, and then cut it out of your life. 64. Being a vegetarian is generally cheaper than not, because meat is expensive.  But to save money should not come at expense to your health. 65. You're kids do not need the latest toys.  You can make toys.  Yes, they're cheap and they look it, but sometime a wrapping paper tube is as much fun as a lightsaber.  Bonus points for colouring like one. 66. Try different foods, sometimes peanut butter, molasses, banana sandwiches are cheaper than mac and cheese. 67. Spices are your friends, buy them in large pouches and use them in every meal.  Keep out of humidity. 68. Bulk is somtimes cheaper, not always.  Price check and compare. 69. Lists are going to be a common theme, make lists to be aware of what's best for everything. 70. Can labels, paper from bills, ETC, maybe good to have on hand if you need to make lists or you have bored kids. 71. Skimp on how much electricity you use as well as water. 72. If you have sweaters, use them rather than turning on the heat. 73. If you have a large family or a lot of friends, communal living is optional. 74. Marriage is not always the cheaper option; it is a myth that two peopl eat as cheaply as for one. 75. Children are expensive, so are pets.  But if you do have children, you have to always put them first, even if that means you go a little hungry.  You brought them into this world and decided to keep them, so you have to do what is best. 76. In winter, cover the windows and sometimes the doors to keep cold out.  If it is very cold and there are gaps around the doors/windows, twist plastic bags up and shove them in the gaps, using a chopstick or pencil.  Flat-headed screwdrivers work fairly nice as long as you are careful to not wreck the bag.  Careful to not stab yourself; Band-Aids are expensive. 77. If you need a tool, but you don't have it, get it from the store, be careful to not damage the package too much or the tool, then return it to the store with the receipt.  *Note* Be sure of the store's return policy beforehand. 78. If you're buying clothes, always state that they are for someone under thirteen, there's only half the tax. 79. Clothes for kids and men are almost always cheaper than women's clothes.  If you are petite, always go for the kids clothes because it is usually under twenty.  *Note* Men's jeans hug your butt better. 80. If you are heavier, go for mens clothing; they're generally better quality and there is less stretch to them. 81. Be careful when buying second-hand things because they are often in bad repair and most places don't do refunds. 82. The Salvation Army is extremely expensive, they don't help people, and they are bigots.  They also take the best items for themselves without paying. 83. To test to see if things are in good repair; 1.) The Tooth Test: Take the thinnest overlap of fabric between your front teeth and give a small tug, don't yank.  If it tears easily, the fabric is rotten.  2.) The Finger Test: If you find a small hole, stick the tip of your finger in it and push.  If the fabric breaks apart easily, the fabric is rotten.  3.) The Pull: If you grab the article with both hands, gently pull, if it comes apart easily, it is rotten.  4.) The Seam Check: Put your hands on either side of the seam and grip it firmly.  Pulling in opposite directions, listen carefully for the seams to make a popping sound.  If the popping comes rapidly, it is rotten.  You also shouldn't be able to see the seams very well. 84. When buying new things, check to see the value of it first.  It is not cheaper if you have to buy five things to last the life of the name brand thing.  When buying clothes, pull at the seams.  If you can see them easily, it is too cheap.  When buying shoes, not only do you wear them around the store for about half an hour, pry at the sole to see how easily it separates from the body of it.  Pull on the laces if it starts rippin through the shoe.  Also, if you can touch the toe of the shoe to the heel, it's cheap and it will not last.  *Note* If you are in a wheelchair, buy whatever is the cheapest, most comfortable shoe. 85. Ugly does not mean bad, and this can be applied to most aspects of life: Fruit, clothes, vehicles, housing, animals, dates... 86. If you're eating at a restaurant and you're made to wait for a very long time or the food sucks, complain to the manager; you may be able to have a discount or a free meal. 87. Carbohydrates are not the enemy, if you do not have near two thousand calories a day, you will be constantly exhausted, sick, irritable, ETC.  Eat food that has a high calorie index, and you will feel better.  *Note* Junk food generally has high calorie count, but you will get sick if you try to live off of potato chips.  A bag of potatoes is a better deal than a bag of chips. 88. At some point, you will have nothing but condiments in your fridge.  There is no shame in a ketchup sandwich, or a mayo sandwich. 89. Mayo is more expensive than Miracle Whip, but it tastes better and is better for you.  You can make your own mayo that costs about fifty cents. 90. Cheez Whiz is expensive, and is not worth it. 91. Store brand is not always the best option. 92. Dry beans last forever and is very healthy.  They are cheap. 93. Dry your food.  Freezer burnt food has no food value, but most of the time, drying the food concentrates the nutrients.  When drying food, moisture and air are your enemies.  If you have a food processor, powder the food and then you can use it to suppliment your meals. 94. Buy food when it's cheap. 95. The cheapest pet food is mostly filler and will make your pet sick, and they will eat more of it because they're not getting the food they need.  Middle of the road is not the best, but it's better than the least. 96. Teflon is poisonous; if you're pans are flaking, don't use them. 97. Tin has lead in it, don't use tin pot and pans. 98. Soup is the food of peasants.  Suppliment it with bread. 99. Drink tap water.  Filter it if you need to, but don't buy bottled water.  The refund you get on the bottles doesn't make up for the amount you paid for it. 100. If you buy soft drink, get the cans.  In the long run it's cheaper.  You generally get about half a liter more.  It's also better for you and the environment. 101. If you've got fluffy animals, brush them out and collect the hair.  Spin it into yarn and make things out of it.  You do enough for your pet, make them do something for you. 102. Alcohol and drugs might seem like a good way to get your mind off your troubles, but it is too expensive not only right now, but later on. 103. Put things in your bread; pumpkin puree, mashed beans, oatmeal, tomato paste, dry fruit and nuts, ETC.  It's a great way to suppliment your diet. 104. If you're finding your place is dry in the winter, put a can or a pot on the stove full of water.  Have the burner on low.  Change the water out once in awhile, and change out the can because it will get gross.  TURN OFF THE BURNER WHEN YOU LEAVE OR GO TO BED.  *Note* If you put spices, favourite smelling liquid soap in the water, it will scent the place too. 105. Brown bag your lunches. 106. If you can afford a Christmas tree, look at plastic trees (an investment), or if that's too expensive still, little trees, you can usually get them at the dollar store.  If that's still too expensive, get some cardboard, cut out the tree and hang it on the wall. 107. You don't need a microwave; most things can be reheated on the stovetop or in the oven.  *Note* If it's for, say, one slice of pizza, eat it cold.  Don't run that mother for just one small thing. 108. Utilize things to their fullest capacity. 109. You don't need to buy Ice Melt and other expensive products.  Go to the dollar store, get some salt and use that. 110. Vinegar and baking soda cleans things, and kills bugs and weeds. 111. Don't buy ice.  That's just stupid. 112. Grow what you can; herbs, tomatoes, carrots, weed, ETC.  Look at websites (using library computer), and they'll tell you how to do cutting, splicing, hydroponics, ETC. 113. Corvids are your spirit animals; scavenge. 114. Look at doomsday prepper websites, they know how to make everything from soap to smokehouses to temporary shelters. 115. Be prepared to be homeless at some point in your life. 116. A lot of landlords won't let you have anything other than curtain to hang over your windows, so either jury-rig plain sheets to be curtains, or go to the dollar store for shower curtains. 117. Look at stir-fry recipes and ramen recipes, you can take inspiration from them. 118. If you see something old and neglected in someone yard and it looks like something you can use, be polite and ask if they are using it, or if you can have.  You might get it for free, or for a few bucks. 119. No matter how horrible life is going for you, try to be polite; people are more likely to help you if they remember you as nice. 120. In cooking, use everything; if you have blood, throw it in soup, gravy, pot roast, ETC.  Use organ meat in spreads, gravy, ETC.  If you cook bacon or other greasy foods, save the grease and spread it on toast.  Use the liquid from canned food in soups. 121. Mosquitos are repelled by citrus and attracted by sweet.  If you eat an orange (navels are usually the cheapest), break the skin up and rub the oil on your skin.  It will cause your skin to tan slightly. 122. Vitamins are bull for the most part.  Spend that money on real food. 123. If you give gifts for birthdays or holidays, find small things on discount throughout the year or make gifts.  (Some families, buying presents on the cheap or for free is a point of pride.) 124. Set a budget for the holidays and birthdays so that only a certain amount is spent. 125. Don't use fabric softener, it ruins your clothes.  If you must soften your clothes, throw in wool balls.  This will also make things less static-y. 126. If you need an animal companion, either find a stray or go to the ASPCA.  *Note* All animals need to see the vet occasionally, so keep this in mind.  If you can barely afford care for you, you can't afford a pet.  Also, some vets have a pay program so you can pay a set amount monthly. 127. Don't buy a vehicle on payments. 128. Don't take out loans, not even with family members. 129. Don't use money marts. 130. Get rainchecks on sold out items that are on sale. 131. You can make your own booze with yeast, sugar, and water.  If you want it to taste better, use juice instead of water.  You don't need a still. 132. If you're capable of walking, park a few block away from where there are meters and walks the rest of the way to your destination.  This may require a bit of mental arithmatic to see if you're not actually walking more or at least halfway. 133. Transit passes are generally cheaper than tokens. 134. Some transit offices if you prove where you lay on the poverty line, you will get a discount. 135. Your child does not need to go to ballet, gymnastics, karate, hockey, ETC.  But they do need to go to the park and have interactions with not only you, but other kids. 136. See what free programs there are for kids. 137. Field trips cost money, so if you hear one is coming up, see how it impacts the child's education.  Sometimes they don't need to go, sometimes their grade is depending on participation. 138. Five buck can be cheap for somethings, and it can be too much for others, figure out what that means to you. 139. Au Natural is the best and cheapest look you can go for. 140. Home-methods for certain things don't work, so be sure to figure out what does and doesn't exist before you try anything.  I.E., certain homemade make up, hair bleach, ETC. 141. If you're making something for the first time, do it in a small batch to see if you like it or if it even works. 142. Just because it's not photo worthy, doesn't mean it isn't servicable. 143. If you throw away perfectly good food because it wasn't to your taste, you're not hungry enough. 144. Make cookie dough ahead of time and freeze it for when you want something nice.  It keeps for about six months. 145. If you insist on waxing, look up sugar wax recipes.  Omit the lemon juice that most of them call for and just use sugar and water.  If it gets overcooked, cool it down and add more water before reheating it.  It won't smell good, but it will still work. 146. You can make things ahead of time, so do what you can. 147. If you have vacation time, save your money.  Aruba is not worth going broke for, and if you did travel, you would just be helping destroy their societal infrastructure.  (Aruba puts more money towards tourism than schools, because most of the money they get is from tourism.) 148. You can make simple candies with vinegar and sugar, and if you don't have vinegar, you can make it with water, sugar, and a little bit of flavour, like cinnamon. 149. If you've got kids, or you're hungry and got nothing, make toast, put butter on it and a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon. 150. If you've made pie and you've got left over crust, cut it into pieces and sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on it before cooking it. 151. You can make furniture out of carboard. 152. You can make furniture out of discarded pallets. 153. It's illegal to take milk crates, but if you find any, they can be invaluable.  If you have eight of them and a plank of wood, you have a table.

Day 3 - Veganism/Minimalism/Zero Waste Don’t Have To Be Just For the Wealthy and Privileged
These are three movements I’m taking part in, whether its as a full participant(Veganism) or someone just starting to think about giving it a try(Minimalism and Zero Waste living). I’m seeing a lot of comments, mostly here on Tumblr, about how all three are really hard from people from minority groups, and everything is too expensive and time consuming and geared towards wealthy and able-bodied white people.
I want to start by saying, I understand where all these people are coming from. There is definitely a culture among bloggers and especially YouTubers of showing off their superior and very expensive fancy equipment for making expensive and complicated vegan, no waste meals, or spending large sums of money on fancy glass jars for storing a year’s worth of some obscure food item bought in bulk. I understand: bulk is pricy, fair trade is pricey, reusable containers and some vegan foods are pricey.
But this frustrates me so much, because neither Veganism nor Minimalism, nor even Zero Waste have to be pricey. They can be. The afore-mentioned gurus are choosing to live their own pricey ‘flavor’ of these lifestyles.
Minimalism
Take Minimalism, which in my opinion is the easiest for all people to adopt. It’s true, not everyone can afford to go out and buy a new wardrobe that consists of super high quality items that will last a decade, especially right of the bat. But anyone can challenge themselves to stop mindlessly buying things and chasing trends. Anyone can have No Shopping days. Anyone can purge their closet by selling and donating items they don’t use or enjoy. Anyone can clear out their junk drawer, and their folders and their cabinets and under their bed. Anyone can sell or donate duplicates of items that are unlikely to be needed. Anyone can delete old photos and documents they don’t care about off their phone and computer. Anyone can ask themselves why they have 25 drinking glasses if they have only a maximum of 6 people over at once. Anyone can decide to get rid of knickknacks and any stuff that’s not adding value to their life. Anyone can choose to make an effort to stop multitasking unnecessarily and be more mindful and aware of the present moment. Anyone can attempt to cut out extraneous unhealthy relationships.
These are things that go back to the roots of Minimalism, and focus on the goal of valuing relationships with people rather than stuff, and appreciating the few things we do own because we know they actually add value to our lives. None of these tips cost money, and in fact many of them could earn you a little bit of money or save you a lot of money in the long run. What’s more, if you save this money as it adds up (and I’m finding that it adds up fast -- I’ve challenged myself not to purchase anything for 3 months and slowly purge my closet at the same time, and I’m amazed, if slightly horrified, to see that in the first three weeks I’ve saved literally hundreds of dollars by eliminating my mindless shopping habit. I actually have savings for the first time in a long time), when your clothes finally do truly just give out, as fast fashion pieces are bound to do, you now have money saved up that you could spend on a replacement item that is ethically made and of high quality, if you so chose. Bam. You just paid someone a fair wage and you may not have to buy a replacement item again for at least a decade. THAT is how you use Minimalism to benefit yourself and simultaneously make a positive change in the world. Feel like these more expensive items of clothing will never be within your budget? That’s ok! Stick to buying second hand. One side effect of our fast fashion society is a lot of excess clothing that ends up in thrift shops, and its often still in good shape for a hugely discounted price, and when you buy second hand you know no energy or resources are being wasted to make you new clothes. And if you need to buy new clothes to look professional at work, there’s no shame in that. Do what you gotta do.
Veganism
Now I’m definitely no cook, and I’ve been vegan for just 3 weeks, but I’m already well aware that Vegansim has the potential to be LESS expensive than, say, the traditional American diet. What is cheaper than rice and beans?? Not much. Tofu is cheaper than meat, y’all. Nuts aren’t bad either, especially if you can buy them in bulk (and yes, I know, if money if tight for you buying in bulk may not seem like a viable option because it’s more money upfront. It might take the slight reorganization of priorities, but hopefully things like changing your shopping habits to avoid constantly consuming fast fashion, selling things you never use and replacing meat with the less expensive and plant-based tofu will enable you to spend a bit more upfront and save a lot of money in the long run. Still can’t afford to buy 10 pounds of almonds all at once? That’s ok! Try buying from the bulk bins anyway, even if you’re getting the same quantity you would from a package off the shelf. I’ve been reading a lot of grocery stores’ websites today trying to learn about bulk buying for myself, and it sounds like its always cheaper to take this route. There’s online resources available to help you locate bulk sellers near you if your local grocery store doesn’t sell bulk as well!)
In my opinion, many people get too caught up in the pricier vegan mock-animal products and processed options, and they forget that fruits and veggies, whole grains and nuts and legumes, are all healthy and vegan and readily available at decent prices. Now yes, it’s true that some people who are barely scraping buy will spend a few dollars on fast food rather than buy comparatively expensive fresh fruits and veggies. I understand and I don’t judge. If that’s what you need to do to feed your family, no one has the right to shame you for it. But I believe that most people just don’t realize how affordable Veganism can really be. Before my transition to Veganism, while I was doing research, I stumbled upon Plant-Based on a Budget, a website offering tips, recipes, and even a complete vegan meal plan for an entire week, including a grocery list for that meal plan that costs just $25. That’s less than $4 for a day’s worth of healthy vegan food. Take that, McDonalds.
Zero Waste
I have to say, I think this one is the least accessible of the three. Of course, that doesn’t mean its unaccessible, by any means. Again, I think we need to go back to the ideals of the movement and stop looking at people who’ve spend tons of money to be able to store their waste in a little jar. We call it ‘Zero Waste’, because that is the ideal we are striving for, that is the dream, but we all know that in practical terms, its really about LESS waste. And we can all work on that. We can all opt to go without plastic straws, unplug electronics that aren’t in use, walk or take public transit instead of driving around town, bring our grocery bags back to the store to reuse on the next visit instead of throwing them away, and recycle our plastics (I realize that some people just really don’t have access to recycling or compost in their area, and while that blows and I encourage you to petition your local government, that is by no means your fault and no one should ever shame you for it). Little things add up big over time, and, yes, this is another area in which investments (or just simple creativity! Forget spending money!) can save you lots of money over time. Does your family use paper napkins at the dinner table? Invest in some cheap cloth ones, or better yet, make your own! Hell, you can just cut an old and seldom used t-shirt into large squares. Who cares what you wipe your fingers on. Zero Waste is an area I’m just starting to learn about, but I can see immediately that the resources online are endless. Spend a little time researching cheap hacks like this from creative and inspired people, and ignore the fools that tell you that all your waste from the last decade should fit in the palm of your hand. The point is to create LESS waste, and the only limit is your imagination.
Now obviously, as a upper-middle class and able-bodied white girl, I’m speaking from a place of privilege. I’ve done my best to think of low-cost ways to participate in the ideals of these movements for anyone who might be interested, and to dispel this stereotype of costliness, but I understand that my experience is different than that of many others, and I’m sure I missed some pretty important things. Please feel free to comment anything I missed or even message me directly about some obstacle in your way as you try to participate in any of these movements, and together we can try and brainstorm a solution. If y’all think I completely fucked up and missed something big, let me know in a constructive way because I’d love to hear about it and talk about it.
(I’d also like to add that I’ve heard someone say that there isn’t much clothing available in thrift stores and eco-conscious brands in larger sizes. I have definitely seen L and XL in ethical clothing brands, so I have to assume its just a matter of finding the right brands, but I can try to do some research in plus sizes if anyone is interested. I was really surprised to hear that about thrift stores, I guess because I assumed since we all wear clothes all sorts of sizes would end up getting donated, but maybe second-hand buy/selling apps like Poshmark would be a good resource here? I think most of them let you search specifically by size, which can make it much easier for everyone to find clothes that fit them. Just a thought)

Obesity – The biggest health threat to your life – II
Tumblr media
Obesity – The biggest health threat to your life – II
You are mainly responsible for every good and bad happened to you I have shared some truths and facts about the causes and problems of obesity in my previous article Obesity – The biggest health threat to your life – I. The concluding and final part are here, check it guys and get benefit from it. I am sharing my observations, thoughts, experiences, and experiments I have done so far to keep me fit, in shape, alive and energetic, you can also learn and apply all of it. Check it out that how can you live better and overcome this problem or keep yourself away to be caught by it.
Tumblr media
Why are people obese?  Obesity, The biggest health threat to your life, learn to live better and do good to yourself. Your life and health matters are solely your concerns, primarily, if you do not care about it, you have to pay a heavy price for it, or may incur irrecoverable losses and disability for a lifetime.  Your eating habits are massively responsible for obesity, no one can put on weight by inhaling air and drinking plain water. It happens due to consumption of wrong food and in unnecessary quantity and wrong timings and in the wrong way. I have never seen a person who has right eating habits, healthy routines and got obese ever. It is directly connected to your calorie intake, check, from what kind of foods you are getting it and how much of it you are burning daily? Even I have seen that the children of highly obese parents did not receive the problem if they didn’t follow the wrong eating and living practices of their parents and never lived as a couch potato. It is all dependent on what you are doing to yourself. It has not totally dependent on genes and heredity and it is almost controllable and reducible to a normal level as another healthy human being. As I have seen People who are obese, as their parents or one of them because they have the same living and eating pattern, mindsets, and routines.  They are eating all kind of junk, unhealthy fats, addicted to highly sweetened drinks and foods (Alcoholic, non-alcoholic), addicted to watching TV for hours and do not do any exercises at all.  They eat oiler, spicy Junk foods and in the quantity higher than they actually needed to live healthy and happy as other people who are not obese. Count your calories, you are taking round the clock, and check how much of it you are capable to burn and from what source you are getting it. Obesity and extra body weight are massively resulted in eating more than required and from the wrong foods and drinking habits. People eat like maniacs and sick and slave of their eating patterns and habits.
Tumblr media
Why are people so unconscious about their body and weight?  If you eat the wrong kind of food and in inadequate or over quantity both make you sick and cause under-nutrition or over nutrition. Life is all about creating balance in everything concerned with your growth and healthy body-mind.   People are habituated of eating heavy oily, spicy junk and calorie filled food and drinks, without caring about it that what impact they are creating on their body and mind. Studies show that people are highly addicted to junk foods, carbonated beverages, packaged highly processed foods, found mostly obese and troubled with many deadly diseases even at a very young age. All the excess calories are taken by the people, stores in their body and create a layer of ugly fat on their body and internal organs, arteries, and veins, and give them innumerable diseases and sometimes serious life threats.
Tumblr media
If you ignore what your body needs, you bound to suffer a lot I cannot understand how people live with that weight. Do they lose their ability to sense that what they have done to themselves? If I caught with a little weight increase, I instantly feel uncomfortable and I can't bear to have that fat on my body. I don’t figure out why people do not feel uncomfortable with excess weight? They do not care about what they are eating, they do not exercise, walk or do any physical exertion to keep them fit and away from sickness and obesity. So be careful about your body, what it needs, give it what it actually needs. Eat good and nutritious food, eat natural and organic foods preferably, eat nuts and fruits instead of junk and sweets. People say that eating good foods, fruits, nuts, and Organic food is expensive. Okay, what do you think how much your life is valuable for you and your loved ones? They do not see the fact that it is always cheaper and better than visiting doctors, paying hospital bills and suffering whole life.  Good thing comes to little more cost and cheap food alternatives cost you a lot in a longer run, even with a disability for life or end of your life. What do you prefer? If you do not do good to yourself, you cannot be able to do it with anyone. Everything in your life starts and end with you.  If you want to save some money and want to escape from your responsibility towards your body and mind, you will pay heavy medical bills and meet life threats greater than you have saved through this conspiracy against yourself.
Tumblr media
Nothing is more valuable in this world than a healthy body and sound mind, every virtue, success, and joy of your life depends upon it. If you still think that it does not worth caring, be ready to pay for more even with your life.    I have seen people are escaping from eating good and healthy foods and they chose cheap and unhealthy foods in place of it. For the sake of their sick taste buds and thinking they are clever and saved money.  They eventually pay a lot at once for their medical bills or even sometimes they will not get a chance to recover due to their permanent disability or sudden and unfortunate death. People who are obese, face problem in every act, they can’t breathe easily, walk easily, do not go up and climb on the stairs. They are unable to run and cannot do much physical exertion, they exhaust more easily than any other person who is not obese.
Tumblr media
I feel very uncomfortable by putting weight on my body, it's very easy for me to gain weight because for last 23 years I have reduced a lot of physical activity due to change in my work and professions? And this is the case with most of the people nowadays, people who don't work outside in the field and have back office or sitting job or work which has less physical activity, than sports or Travelling. Always check that are you in your weight category according to BMI? And it is even more important to do physical activities even you are on your BMI scale, it keeps you fit and alive, more strong and healthy. You must take care of it in the first place, and try to live a life which keeps you fit and active, energetic and in shape, so you will not need to worry about it. What am I doing in this regard?  I was mainly working in the field of IT and Education most of the period in the last 22 years, now am doing blogging and web designing, my work and environment allow me to sit in front of computers for very long hours. I used to walk an hour daily, I always involved in some kind of physical activity and exercises, always conscious about my weight and fitness from childhood. At present, I spent at least 8 to 10 hours in front of my computer screen sitting on my office chair. So I am more cautious about eating foods and exercising more than ever before.  For more than 20 years I  don't have a TV at my home and I do not read newspapers. I cannot afford to consume bullshit of any kind, including junk food, unhealthy drinks, and a company of self-destructors. I do not consume any kind of junk information, thoughts and ugly manipulated information and advertisements spread all over the media and communication channels. I never fall and involved in any stupid and unproductive and senseless debates and activities and group of people.  I love to live alone, in my own company, with nature, reading and learning creative and productive stuff, engaging myself with like-minded people, sharing my experience and learning from them. I don't have time to waste on any bullshit and unproductive and non-creative activity and people.
Tumblr media
I eat only what is required to maintain my energy level and nutritional level in my body. Mostly nuts, whole grains, fermented foods, fruits, and green tea. I do not allow myself to eat refined sugar, fast food junk, and deep-fried foods and snacks. For the last 3 and half years I have not eaten anything outside, except 3 or 4 incidents and I have eaten only south Indian fermented food, no deep fried snacks, and ugly carbonated beverages. I drink RO water; eat only organic grains and pulses, dry fruits and nuts. In summer I eat 2 to 3 lemons per day, normal days I eat at least one, it keeps me cool and fresh all along the day, I drink enough water whole day, stored in the copper vessel. I drink three glass of water after waking up in the morning it may be normal or Luke warm water. The first glass of water with organic, unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon juice and a spoon of organic honey. The next with Cinnamon and honey and the last is plain water. I eat regularly, homemade fermented brown rice and organic pulses base Dosa-Idli Batter; I am vegetarian by birth and vegan for the last 4 years. I do not eat white sugar for the last 4 years and never eaten more than 3 Tea Spoon ever before in a whole day. I use Organic Jaggery and Honey as sweeteners, I don’t consume dairy products for more than 4 years, I drink only organic green tea and Organic Coffee. I make a chocolate drink with organic cacao powder. I eat organic chia and flax seeds daily in my diet. I eat a lot of seasonal fruits; I drink at least 3 to 5 glass of water as per my body requirement. I do not drink water outside, as much possible, if needed I use mineral water for consumption.
Tumblr media
I am enjoying the best food available in this world with a lot of taste and full of health  So I am not dieting and enjoying the best lot of food and food ingredients available in this world. I eat for healthy living not only to satisfy my taste buds. I am a foodie and like to eat a variety of healthy foods, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Good things cost a lot, good body and health need more care than anything. Do expense on good food, not in fashion and useless fancy gadgets, grooming parlors, deodorants, and creams, they make you addicted and sick and have great side effects on your body and mind.  If you eat and live healthy way, you will never need them, your body and face automatically say about your healthy body and mind. Real Beauty, glow, and joy comes from inside out, you can't impose them.  And nothing is more important than your healthy body and mind. You cannot enjoy your car, flat or buildings, gadgets or jewelry or money in your bank accounts.  If you do not have a strong, healthy and balanced body and mind. What will you do with all these things, in the absence of good health and a sound mind?  In my view your body and minds health are the most important tasks and things to be taken care, make it a priority, all else depend upon it.
Tumblr media
What would you prefer between, Healthy body-mind or Hospital and Medical Bills? Choose between good and healthy foods and lifestyle or doctors and medical bills, the choice is always yours. I have chosen a life free from diseases, medicines and medical bills. What is your take on this matter? I do not want to die as everyone die in this world, I do not want to die on a deathbed, taking prescriptions and deprived of all the goodies of life. In my 50 years of life, I have not seen anybody in my whole family and around my surrounding and in my environment that anyone did not die of diseases. I have not seen anyone dying naturally and healthy, I definitely not choose this kind of end for myself, what you decided for you? It's in my hand that how can I live here and how will I die? I do not want to eat things which take me to do expense more on the cures, medicines, and drugs and keep me sick and troubled, lethargic my whole life and in insane conditions physically, mentally. So at the end of the story I want to say to my dear friends, the quality of your life depends on the body and mind you have, keep it right by eating the right food and doing right things all the time, stay fit and alive. My suggestions to all my friends who wish to live a healthy and happy life and do not want to live on medicines and prescription drugs, the rest of their life. If you do not want to suffer from the danger of untimely death due to serious health problems caused by obesity and other sicknesses, they must follow a healthy routine and nutritious diet along with sufficient physical activity and exercises.  Stay Healthy, Happy and Blessed. Homemade chicken stock from garbage?
“Garbage?” you say.
Yes, garbage!
First let me start off by saying I am a writer, but I am also an avid gardener, food preserver, and a general foodie.
And I’m cheap.
I love preserving the old ways of cooking and putting food by, much like the character Phineas in my upcoming Men of Gilead novel, THE RHUBARB PATCH. Check out this cute scene about homemade chicken stock here.
Back to me being cheap. I love to see how much bang I can get for my cooking buck. Would you like to turn that $10 rotisserie chicken and scraps you were gonna pitch into 12-16 pints of stock? At the price of one jar of chicken broth, not only are you getting six helpings of chicken for dinner, but the leftovers gave you $20 bucks worth of FREE broth.
That’s my kinda savings.
Now some of you may compost, so what I am calling “garbage” might not be garbage to you. I compost too, but I found a better use for some of my kitchen scraps.
The “garbage” I’m referring to is the leftover chicken or turkey carcass(skin, fat and cartilage too), ham or beef bones and all your mirepoix peelings and scraps.
What is mirepoix? Check it out here: http://ift.tt/1JX4ujV Basically it’s celery, onion, and carrots. I believe Emeril called it the Holy Trinity of most dishes.
Now, if like me, you buy whole carrots because it’s cheaper and the flavor is better for cooking than baby carrots, then you have to peel them.
But don’t shove those peels or the green tops down your garbage disposal!
Bag of “garbage” scraps
Take every single one of them and stash them in a gallon freezer bag and put them in your freezer. Same for the celery butts and leaves, or just wilted celery that isn’t rotten but you don’t wanna eat. And the thick onion skins? Toss those in your freezer bag too. Just make note that the papery peels will make the stock cloudy. Personally I don’t care, but you might.
Now I take it a step beyond the basic mirepoix and save the tiny butts of my garlic and those green stalks that often grow inside the bulbs and toss those in my “garbage” freezer bag too. Also leeks and scallions are good to save. And the stems from your fresh herbs? Don’t leave those out! Heck, I’ve even saved parsnip, turnip, and beet peels too.
*NOTE* Don’t use cruciferous vegetables like broccoli or cabbage. And avoid tomatoes and asparagus. It’ll ruin your stock. There are mixed thoughts on potato peels. Adding a few will thicken the broth, but too many will ruin it. I’ve never used any of these ingredients myself. If I’m making a roasted veggie stock I will save a few hot or bell peppers, but be careful as they can overpower the flavor of your stock too.
I’ve added lemons after squeezing them too. Sometimes I freeze them separate for free pectin in my jellies (I don’t like to waste) but one or two halves in a chicken stock brightens the flavor nicely.
Now after dutifully saving all these scraps, you can roast them with some olive oil and make veggie stock. Whether you’re vegetarian or not, this broth is DYNAMITE to cook rice or quinoa in. But if you want this trendy “bone broth” (aka known to the rest of us folks as grandma’s homemade stock) the next time you have a carcass you’ll be ready to go.
Mmmm! It makes the house smell so good!
Don’t you just love having a nice reason to say carcass?
No? Just me, eh? LOL
I make my stock in a crock pot. There’s really no point in doing it any other way, IMO. It’s just sooooo easy!
For the sake of this post, I’m making chicken stock, but if you have beef bones, make sure they have been roasted first, same with the veggies.
Step 1: Save all your scraps in the freezer: mirepoix, herb stems, garlic butts etc.
Step 2: You have a carcass! Yay! Now put it in your slow cooker, skin, fat, gunk in the bottom of the pan, drippings and any of that clear jelly like stuff too. Now don’t be squeamish, there’s lots of nutrients in there which are good for body, especially your hair, skin, and nails. (Do I have your attention now?)
Step 3: Dump in some of your frozen “garbage.” Leave enough space that the cooker is no more than 2/3 full.
Step 4: Cover with filtered water
Step 5: Add 1TBS cider vinegar. This breaks down the bones and helps leech out more nutrients. Let it sit an hour.
Step 6: Add salt to taste. Don’t skip the salt, you’ll regret it.
Step 7: Turn slow cooker to low…..I shouldn’t think I have to tell you to put the lid on now, but there ya go.
Step 8: Forget about it!
I cook my broth a minimum of 24 hours and have let it go as long as four days, adding water as I needed. Seriously, the four day broth was soooooo rich! Like liquid consomme. Now you can do 12 hours, but you will see that most of the bones and skin are still intact after that, thus leaving a lot of nutrients behind. So if you want all those healthy nutrients from the bones, cook it longer. I usually do 48 hours.
Step 9: When you’re done cooking, strain the broth well, making sure to get out all pieces of bone and veggie. What do you do with all the skin, cooked veggies and bones?
You didn’t think I was gonna say throw it away, did you?
You’re so silly!
The point of not wasting anything….. is NOT WASTING ANYTHING. After you strain the stock, add all the junk back to the crock pot and make another batch for a lighter stock. I may or may not add fresh veggies in at this point. You can cook a third batch until the bones disintegrate if you want, I’ve done that too.
Step 10: Cool your stock if you plan to skim the fat. I almost never do this unless it’s ham bone stock.Your stock should be a rich brown, not yellow.
You have three options:
See how rich and brown it is?
A. Use it within a week (storing it in the fridge, duh)
B. Freeze it for up to six months
C. Can it, my usual go to.
If you’ve cooled your stock, bring it back to a boil before canning. Now its the time to taste it, see if you need more salt.
You will need a pressure canner to can any homemade stock, including the veggie stock.
DO NOT WATER BATH
Unless you are planning on poisoning your family. Then by all means, water bath away!

Anyone who knows about car Insurance please help?
Ok, long story short. I live in Canada, Ontario, the worst ******* place in the world to be when it comes to car insurance. I am classified as a high risk driver because of some petty thing I did, (got caught driving with my G1 license alone, when you need a passenger with at least 4 years experience) I want to know what my insurance would be now on a 1991 bmw e30 318is. I am 16 years old, my question is can I call a bunch of insurance companies and ask for quotes? I mean do I have to be at least 18 years of age to do this? Please inform me. I am pretty sure as long as I have my license beside me I can call insurance companies for quotes right? Also what do they ask? Just car Make, model, year, color, sedan or coupe, etc? What else? Sorry for sounding like a complete idiot, I am only 16 I do not know these things. Thank you very much""
""If healthy foods were more affordable, would health insurance be cheaper?""
It irritates me beyond words that people these days are almost forced to have a poor diet because junk food is more affordable. Then, the health risks associated with eating junk food cause more people in the hospital, more money being shucked at pharmaceutical companies for medicine to treat the diseases cause by poor diets, and health insurance and taxes we all have to pay for regardless of how healthy we try to be. I mean, if a packet of Ramen noodles is 50 cents and an apple is $1.50, the majority of the financially stressed nation is going to reach for the Ramen. I would love to eat mostly raw fruits and veggies all day long, but I simply can't afford that and it makes me feel like the government is forcing me to eat crappy foods in order to survive. Why are healthy foods so expensive? And wouldn't it factor out in the end to reduce the price of healthy foods knowing a lot of money would no longer have to be forked out for doctor's visits?""
My auto insurance raised twice as much for not being insured for more then 30-days?
I had auto insurance with state farm and my policy was $180 (just liablilty)per month for 12 months. I ran into some issues with money and could not pay so I cancelled the policy and avoided driving for a little over a month. I recently went to another agency to find a cheaper insurance and they said since i had a registered vehicle that was uninsured for more than 30 days, there is a penalty. Now I pay $340 for 8 months (just liablilty). 3 agency's told me the same thing. My question is will this ever change? How long will I have this penalty ? I have a clean driving record besides this and feel this is unfair and cannot afford it. Is there anything I can do to go back to paying $180p month? When did insurance companies start doing this? I have not found anything similiar through my research. Thanks""

Okay a week ago I was about to have an accident I passed a railroad track when no train was comming and the bars were up as well so I passed the railroad and I made a turn so this had a stop sign at a corner and didn't make a complete stop so I was passing since I didn't have a stop sign or yield sign and this guy just stepped on the gas and went into the wrong way and then he tried to jump into the way that I was going and I was about to hit him because there wasn't enough space for him to change lanes safely. How can I prevent this girl from completely taking advantage of my insurance company?
A few nights ago I accidentally brushed the side of my neighbor's car with my front bumper (cause she was parked like an idiot as usual). I'm taking full responsibility of it cause it's my fault and I have no problem with that. Initially I was going to pay for the scrape to be compounded out and whatever else was wrong as a result of me hitting it. However, when I spoke to her, she started pointing out a ridiculous amount of things: there's a scratch in addition to the scrape (ok, sure), she says I cracked her light (maybe I did, it's possible) but she's also saying that I caused her tire to pop out and that there's tread missing from it (which makes absolutely no sense because I didn't hit the tire or rim or wheel well at all). Basically, she expects a whole new paint job and a set of tires which is ridiculous for the small amount of damage that was done. I want to make sure she isn't trying to take advantage of my insurance company and cause my rates to skyrocket as a result. The car is a complete piece of sh*t and she doesn't take care of it at all - the paint's dull, the rims are rusted - and I think she's trying to fix these things by making it like they were a result of me hitting her. I have no problem at all taking responsibility for the damage I did, but I do have a problem with her making things up and trying to fix other issues through my insurance company. The last claims representative I spoke with told me that I would not be contacted by the adjuster at all since there is no damage to my car. Since she's going to be talking with the adjuster and I won't, I'm afraid she's going to exaggerate the amount of damage. Should I call my insurance company and tell them this? Will they care? What can I do?""

Co-operative insurance 4645 (Full Comp) Direct line Over 3000(Full Comp) (they wouldn't give an accurate result, I'd have to be transferred onto another dept.) Quinn Direct 6000 (Third party, Fire & Theft only, i was then informed that their premiums where increased) All in my own name and not under any parents, however it seems like the best option at the moment. I do know about a few companies that specialise in young driver insurance, one called Young Marmalade and another called i-Kube. Both are cheaper, but there are catches to policies, i-Kube requires you to have a GPS tracker fitted, if you drive passed 11PM at night a 100 Penalty is incurred, and for each night you drive past said time. with young marmalade you need to have the pass plus scheme. I also know that premiums are subject to a post code area rating. (CH 62) so if anyone could tell me where cheap insurance for this type of car is I would be great-full.""

Organic Food — Your First Step to a Healthy Life
Are you one of those people who want to know what you take in and how good it is for you? Are you really aware of the processing and procedure involved in the making of the food that you consume?  Do you still want to stay ignorant and oblivious to the food you consume and how beneficial it is for your health? We stay away from organic food because of its hefty price tag but is organic food really good for you and the environment we live in?
Organic food industry has become a booming industry ever since Amazon acquired Whole Foods, the iconic seller of organic wares and interesting beverages. Organic foods are gaining a lot of popularity these days as a greater of the world’s population wants to know about its benefits. Our general public belief is based on the fact that organic food is healthier when compared to the conventional and this has motivated the increase in demand for Organic food over the past decade.
Tumblr media
Consuming Organic Food has become a trend that is still trending in the world as people are now realising the benefits of being healthy. We’ll be discussing about the benefits of the organic food in this blog. But before we get there let me tell you some basic stuff about Organic Foods.
What exactly is Organic Food?
Organic food refers to the food products are that prepared, processed and produced with the use of chemicals pesticides, chemical preservatives or chemical fertilisers. They’re prepared according to the norms set by an organic certifying body.
Identifying Organic Foods isn’t tough, you can easily identify organic food with the help of an organic logo on the packet. If you’re worried about who puts the logo and whether it is authentic or not then you should know that the companies, farmers, manufacturers, and suppliers put the logo of the certifying body on their food items once all norms are set by a certifying body of their region.
Benefits of Organic Food over Non-Organic Food-
The Organic Foods are normally grown with natural fertilisers whereas the Non-Organic Foods are Grown with synthetic/chemical fertilisers.
In Organic Foods, Weeds we controlled naturally by using crop rotation, hand weeding, mulching, etc and pest are also controlled by using natural methods but in case of Non-Organic Food, the weeds and pests are controlled with chemical herbicides and synthetic pesticides, respectively.
The Livestock in Organic foods are given organic, hormone and GMO-free feed and also have an outdoor access but in Non-organic foods Livestock may or may not have access to the outdoors and they are given growth hormones to initiate faster growth as well as they are GMO feed.
Tumblr media
Health Benefits of eating Organic Food:
It provides better overall health :
Organic food is neither produced not are they processed with the help of chemical pesticides and chemical fertilisers. They do not even contain any toxic chemical elements and because of this consuming organic foods won’t affect human health. To cultivate Organic Food, people use natural techniques such as green manure that is helpful to fertilise the lands. The crops produced are safer, healthier, and smellier final products.
Antioxidant in Organic Food:
Numerous scientific study suggests that antioxidants have an overall health benefit especially the ones that comes from organic foods. It is also claimed that foreign chemicals normally react with vitamin, organic compounds and miners which lowers the essential positive impact of antioxidants. The positive impacts of organic food’s antioxidant will help a person to prevent heart disease, cancer, cognitive malfunction, premature aging and vision problem.
Organic Food tastes better:
It is true that organic foods taste better than its counterpart and junk food. And if you’re accustomed to the addictive qualities of the junk food like processed sugar and MSG then it will take some time for your body to accept and experience the healthy food and once your body is compatible with organic foods, you’ll start craving for it and everything else will taste bad.
Organic Food is fresh:
Organic Food is often deemed to be fresh as it doesn’t contain chemical preservatives. These are guided by very strict standards of production, processing and preparation. The lack of chemical preservatives state that Organic Food is more or less fresh and juicy.
Strengthens Immune System:
Eating or consuming organic foods lessens the risk of decline in the strength of your immune system because organic foods are not altered at whatsoever. The modern day industrial farming techniques aims at enhancing production and farm output in any way possible. For ex, if a person wants to produce more cereals, meat and even bigger fruits then he’d have to genetically modify the food products which also includes the use of growth hormones in order to solve some of the world’s food insecurity. This might not be visible just yet but in the long term process there will be consequences which might result in decline in the strength of your immune system.
Highly Nutritious:
Organic milk, organic fish, organic meat and organic poultry have a high nutritional content as they are not grown like the conventional agricultural food products and they do not contain modified ingredients. There is one other reason why the organic foods are highly nutritious and the reason is that they are given ample of time to develop and are provided to grow with the best natural conditions possible.
Higher meat and milk quality:
Organic food products like organic milk and organic meat is the the highest quality. Consuming organically produced milk and meat are produced, prepared and processed in such a way that you are guaranteed to have the products that have higher quality vitamins and minerals. The statistics say that the organic milk is proved to have 60% more omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, CLA and antioxidants than the non-organic milk. You should also know that the organic cows are pasture grazed that results in the better meat quality.
It is often claimed that meat is not good for human health but the bitter truth is that CAFOs also known as “Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation”worsens the meat and the milk quality by introducing foreign and unhealthy antibiotics along with drugs in the final food product.
Safe for environment:
As harmful chemicals are forbidden in organic farming, there is relatively minimum water, soil, and air pollution which furthermore ensures a healthier and safer environment. It is evident that organic farming lessens the long-term human implications that are caused by air, soil and water pollution.
On the other hand, Organic foods are grown locally and they support healthy living due to the minimal interference to the environmental resources.
Reduction in pesticides:
Variety of diseases and disorders are linked to the consumption of chemical pesticides. Diseases include cancer, ADHD, weakened immune system, digestive dysfunction, headache, premature death and also birth defects.Organic foods are extremely preferable for attaining better health as they are free of pesticides. Pesticides are very much effective in keeping certain pests away from the crops. Pesticides also includes potent chemicals like organophosphorus which is extremely dangerous.
Kind of cheaper:
Although a few organic food and products are extremely expensive, but in the long run organic food might just save your money is a lot of ways:
The whole foods help to prevent major as well as minor diseases and illness which indicates that there will be seemingly low health care costs and you’ll not miss your work more or less. This is one of the hidden advantages of organic foods.
Your brain is in absolute control if your body, so whenever you eat anything, your brain tells you to eat the food based on the nutrients it receives. Now that you’re consuming organic food everyday and you know that eating organic food means consuming more nutrients, which implies that your brain won’t tell your body to keep eating like it does with junk food.
If you think getting organic food is hard and is expensive then you can try buying organic foods from the farmer’s market and this is extremely inexpensive and when you come into direct contact with the farmer you also get an option to barter with farmers for goods and services.
Well let’s face some realities. Organic food normally costs 20% to 100% more than the inorganic conventional food. We all are aware of the fact that organic food production is labor-intensive and it involves the use of organic pesticides and organic fertilisers, and these are much more expensive than chemical pesticides and fertilisers. This is the reason why organic food is very expensive.

""If healthy foods were more affordable, would health insurance be cheaper?""
It irritates me beyond words that people these days are almost forced to have a poor diet because junk food is more affordable. So that means M2+G1 == G2 in one way (I mean G2 won't equal M2 + G1) So anyone have an idea how much insurance I have to pay for getting a car (i know a lot of details here but consider cheap car and no experience at all)? This info about M2 + G1 = G2 is from here: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/gradu/index.shtml Note: Class M2 and Class M licence holders may also drive Class G vehicles under the conditions that apply to a Class G1 licence holder. Thanks in advance

How will this 15-20 mph speeding ticket affect my insurance?
I just turned 18 and I am a senior in high school. I live in a small area that is just between two towns. This area is known for its police; they have a tendency to give speeding tickets out like crazy. They hide in places so that they can catch people speeding; the area is generally a 30mph zone. I had a good morning and got a little foot-happy...I sped right up to a cop that hides next to my neighborhood. Needless to say, I was going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Without a seat belt. I was extremely honest, so I got a speeding ticket but the seat belt issue was simply a warning. This is my first ticket ever; the only other time I had been pulled over was because I forgot to turn on my headlights...I was 16 at the time. I have State Farm Insurance and have an extremely decent rate for my age. I have no issues paying the speeding ticket because I did speed...I just don't want my insurance to be crushed. I went through driver's education, State Farm's Steer Clear Program, and I have maintained my grades to ensure that I get a decent rate. What will this ticket do to my rate? And what is the best I can make out of this situation?""

Why is my insurance so cheap?

I thought I could save a few bucks and switch companies, however, I quoted literally every company available in MD and the lowest I found was 580 a month for the same coverages. Thats a HUGEEE difference! I am starting to wonder if something is wrong with my policy. I have had it about a year with no issues, and my not at fault claim went through smoothly. I have to wait a couple weeks from the car insurance place so please no get a quote I just want an approximate estimate of about how much it would cost. I don't have drivers ed or anything. Just a license at 17 on my parents insurance. I would have my own car but it'd be on their insurance so that's 3 cars on 1 insurer. The car I am going to get is a 84' Volvo wagon. Please just a month average price of how much more my parents insurance would go up. ( like they pay 100 and it'd be 250/mo. So i pay 150 a month.) something like that. I just want to know if my job will cover my own difference Thankyou.""
Why do we NEED car insurance?!?
Why is it the LAW that we have car insurance?? I honestly think it's stupid. Shouldn't we, as free Americans, be able to make the choice of whether or not we want insurance, and still legally drive a vehicle, as long as we have a license, at our own risk? Kind of like if you go skiing or snowboarding, you go at your own risk, you're not forced to get skiing insurance , or boarding insurance , or anything like that. I mean, think of this situation: I have no insurance, and I wreck into somebody. They have insurance, so they are covered. I don't, so I will either have to get rid of my car, or pay for repairs myself; that's the risk I took and this is how I'm paying for it, by being car less or spending tons of money on repairs. But why must we be forced by law to have it, or NO DRIVING FOR YOU says big ole' government?? This is angering me because I'm currently in college, without a car, and while I can walk to my work and school, it's still about 30-45 minutes each way to walk, and if I could get an old car for cheap, it would make my life MUCH easier and less of a hassle.""

Best way to save money on car insurance?
I'm 16 now, and I'm planning on learning to drive a car. I heard that if you have a driver license at 16 years old but you DON'T buy a car, which means you don't buy a car or drive a car or anything like that for 3 or 4 years, your car insurance will be deducted. So I have a couple of questions: 1. Is the statement above correct for California? 2. If #1 is wrong, then if I buy a car but don't drive it, will the money still be deducted after 3 or 4 years? 2. Is there any other ways to lower money spending on car insurance? 3. I also heard that you can combine your driver license with one of family members, but the money will be raised up a little bit. Is this true? And how can I combine my license to other family member?""

Affordable health insurance in NYC?
Hi, I am 30 years old and my wife and I had a combined income of approx $62,000 for 2006. In august of this year I will be quitting my full time job and going back to school full time. My current salary is $50,000. I anticipate making no more than $20,000 while in school and not being able to get health insurance through work. My income for 2007 will screw up my chances of getting most federal aid for the first year and will probably exclude me from healthy NY as well. Insurance through school is about $600 a month. I've gotten quotes of $513 to $1200 a month for my wife and I. All I want is catastrophic coverage in case either of us have any major problems or I have an accident while riding my motorcycle (a means of transportation, not a toy). Are there any schools out there that offer their teachers affordable family insurance?
My husband is a full-time teacher. I work part-time and am a grad. student. He has great insurance for himself, but I have to pay for my own separately. Are you confused about what to eat? Here’s why…..
http://drhyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Screen-Shot-2018-01-24-at-11.14.46-AM.png?v=1.1
I have a question for you….
Are you confused about what to eat?
Let’s do a pop quiz, keep a mental note as you read this. Are these statements true or false:
Oatmeal is a healthy breakfast and prevents heart disease.
Butter causes heart disease.
Egg whites are healthier than whole eggs because they don’t contain cholesterol.
Red meat causes cancer.
Gluten free food is healthy.
Dairy is necessary for kids to grow, and to prevent broken bones as we age.
Vegetable oils prevent heart disease and are better for you than saturated fats.
Yogurt is a healthy breakfast.
Zero-calorie sweeteners help you lose weight by cutting calories from your diet.
Well guess what, every single one of those statements is WRONG! But don’t feel bad. The most common question I get is “Dr. Hyman, what the heck should I eat?”
I have written a new book, Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? that will help you cut through the headlines and take you between the lines. I promise this book will fix your nutrition whiplash and provide a clear roadmap for the nutritionally confused. It is a sane, scientifically balanced answer to the question, “What the heck should I eat?”
Eating the right food is also the single biggest thing you can do to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, dementia, autoimmune disease, allergies, digestive problems, AND it can make you feel better RIGHT NOW. It can even give you better skin, help you live longer, and have better sex!
In fact, the foods we DO eat (bad stuff) and the foods we DON’T eat (good stuff) are the reason we are one of the fattest countries in the world—with 70% of us overweight. It is why 84% of our $3.2 trillion in health care costs are spent on chronic disease that is preventable by DIET.
Okay, so if eating the right food is so important, then what the heck IS the right food? You think it would be easy to answer that question, right?
But it is not.The most common question I get from patients and just about EVERYBODY is WHAT SHOULD I EAT? Even if we want to eat right, most of us are still so confused.
So why are we all so confused?
It’s not your fault. In fact, it is by DESIGN—the food industry, our government, and the media are all sending us conflicting messages. And all the contradictory science doesn’t help either!
Should you be vegan and eat like a gorilla, or paleo and eat like a hunter gatherer?
Should you eat a low-fat diet to prevent heart disease, or a high-fat ketogenic diet?
Should you be gluten free?
Should you eat lots of grains and beans, or cut out all grains and beans and eat like a caveman?
Should you eat coconut oil because it is good for your brain? Or does it cause heart disease like the American Heart Association tells us?
Should you drink three glasses of milk a day like the government tells us to do, or should we avoid ALL dairy because it causes cancer, autoimmune disease, and actually increases your chance of fractures?
I mean, with all the conflicting advice and nutrition whiplash it’s enough to say ”The heck with it!” No wonder you are left with the feeling “I am just going to eat what I want because nobody can agree on anything.” There IS a reason we are all confused and it is NOT an accident. And, most importantly, it’s not your fault! It’s not quite a conspiracy, but close.
How the Food Industry Corrupts the Government Policies and Harms Our Health, The Planet, and Society
Here’s the bottom line. Money is corrupting science, our government’s food policies, and the media.
Where’s the money coming from?
There is a multi-trillion dollar global food industry that is growing, processing, manufacturing, marketing, and serving food like substances that are making us sick and fat. They are cheap to make and rake in big profits for ”Big Food”.
They put private profit over public good, harming us all. They privatize profits and socialize costs. We taxpayers are footing the bill for the growing of processed foods (through agricultural subsidies for the raw materials of processed food—namely wheat, corn, and soy), and for providing the poor quality processed food and soda to the poor (through our food stamps program).
Then, we also pay for the costs of obesity and chronic disease caused by that food through Medicaid and Medicare. Not to mention the costs of soil degradation, depletion of our water supplies, climate change, and the widespread damage to humans and ecosystems from pesticides.
This is because the food industry lobbyists push policies that use our tax dollars AGAINST us.  We subsidize the growing and selling of processed foods that make us sick and fat.
Then of course there’s the media which is all about headlines and sound bites. AND they receive a big portion of their ad revenue from the food industry.
Let’s first look at the role of the food industry. This includes the seed producers, factory farmers, food growers, and the processed food and fast food industries.
These organizations spend millions of dollars each year to influence our Department of Agriculture with heavy lobbying. And there’s a huge problem with this…
Do you ever wonder who creates our dietary guidelines? It’s actually the Department of Agriculture, the same agency that is in charge of deciding which crops our tax dollars subsidize!
So, let’s get this straight—the government agency created to support our industrial agriculture system is making our dietary guidelines and food policies? Seems like a big conflict of interest.  In fact, in 2017 the National Academy of Science report found that the process for coming up with the dietary guidelines was corrupt and unduly influenced by industry while ignoring big swaths of relevant research.
This results in subsidies that support commodity crops—corn, wheat, and soy—which get turned into high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, and refined soybean oil.
So let me clarify. Even though more than half our diet comes from these three crops which are the building blocks of sugar sweetened drinks and processed foods, they are definitely NOT what we should be eating.
Yet 99% of the government’s food subsidies go to support these crops. Only 1% goes for “specialty” crops—fruits and veggies. Really, vegetables are “specialty crops”? Then why does the government tell us to eat 5-9 servings a day?
If we actually followed that advice, there would only be enough veggies and fruits to feed 2% of the population. Seems like a lot of lip service without the policies in place to make it happen.
Now you know why it is CHEAPER to buy a fast food burger, fries, and soda than it is to buy a healthy, delicious salad. In fact, since the 1970’s the price of soda has gone down 40% while the price of veggies has gone up 40%.
56% of our calories come from these three commodity crops in the form of processed foods. And people who eat these foods are more obese and are at higher risk for heart disease and diabetes. So now you know the truth. Our government is funding our chronic disease epidemic.
And it gets much worse.  Our food stamp program, which should be protecting at risk families, actually supports the sale of sugary drinks and processed food. The number one item purchased with food stamps is soda at a cost to taxpayers of $7 billion a year (or 20 billion servings of soda year for the poor). You can buy a 2-liter bottle of soda with food stamps, but not a rotisserie chicken.
How does that make any sense?
The government’s dietary guidelines tell us to cut sugar on one hand, but the same agency allows food stamps to be used to buy soda.
How does that many any sense?
And the crazy thing is we pay for chronic disease caused by sugar and processed foods with Medicaid and Medicare.
By 2040 100% of our federal tax revenue will be needed to pay for chronic disease caused by our policies and food system.
How does THAT make any sense?
It’s time to END government subsidies for high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, and soybean oil.
Let’s stop supporting soda and junk food companies with food stamp payments.
We have to ask ourselves what is the REAL cost of a soda or cheap processed food?
If you included the cost of industrial agriculture and factory farming’s impact on climate change and the destruction of the environment from fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide use, and the cost of chronic diseasem the real cost of a soda might be $50 a can.
Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, we allow unrestricted junk food marketing to kids—where they see over 6,000 ads for junk food every year on TV and thousands more on social media and from stealth marketing. Every other developed country restricts these ads. We don’t.
Do you really think it is an accident that Paula Abdul drank a big container of Coke on American Idol?
THEN we have to deal with food labels. These are super confusing and misleading. We can’t change them because of the food industry. I talked to the head of the FDA who told me that Congress threatens to cut funding for the FDA if they try to change policies like food labels. The labels should be clear. You shouldn’t need a PhD in nutrition to understand a food label. It should work like the stoplight system they have in Europe.
Green is good for you, yellow eat with caution, and red—this could kill you.
And what about all the health claims we’re seeing on labels? Health claims on labels almost always indicate that a food is bad for you and is selling you a lie. Whole Grain Cookie Crisp Cereal with 6 teaspoons of sugar. Really?
All natural.Well natural vanilla flavor is made from beaver’s anal glands. It may be natural, but is that what you really want to be eating?
And sugar free—that comes with artificial sweeteners that make you fat and diabetic.
How about fat-free salad dressing loaded with sugar? Or fat-free yogurt that has more sugar than a soda!? Or zero trans fat products like Cool Whip? The second ingredient after water is trans fats!  Its legalized lying sanctioned by the FDA.
So, is it any wonder we are confused about what we should be eating?
Sadly, the reasons we are confused don’t stop there.
How the Food Industry Corrupts Science and Public Health Organizations
The food industry funds research and corruptsscientists. If a food industry company sponsors a study, that study is 8 to 50 times more likely to show benefit for their product or ingredient.
Dairy industry studies find that milk is good for you. Studies funded by the American Beverage Association prove that soda has no link to obesity.
There is only one problem—studies from independent researchers prove that soda and sugar sweetened beverages are the number ONE cause of obesity and account for 184,000 deaths a year. The food industry (not to mention the government, our public health associations, and doctors and dietitians)claim that 1,800 calories of soda is the same as 1,800 calories of broccoli.
Really? We KNOW that all calories are NOT the same.
Even worse is how the food industry corrupts and influences public advocacy groups like the NAACP and public health organizations like the American Heart Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (which gets 40% of its funding from the food industry).
The American Beverage Association funds the NAACP, which came out against the soda tax even though almost half of African Americans are obese and drink twice as much soda as white Americans.
On top of it all—the food industry has figured out how to hack the American mind and body, designing (on purpose) food that is highly addictive—sugary and processed foods to be exact.
Remember that ad for potato chips,“I bet you can’t eat just one”. That’s not an accident. Why is it you can binge on a bag of cookies but no one binges on a bag of avocados?
So, if you think you are getting fair and unbiased scientific recommendations from our government or public health organizations, think again.
The good news is that the truth about nutrition, the basic guiding principles of how and what to eat to promote health, weight loss, and longevity—AND to prevent, treat and reverse most chronic disease—is pretty simple.
I have read thousands of papers on nutrition and tried and recommended various ways of eating with tens of thousands of patients over 20 years. And I’ve seen the effects of food on weight, health, diabetes, gut issues, autoimmune disease, and lots more.
In my book, Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? (out February 27, 2018) I uncover the truth about the food we actually eat—what is healthy and not in each group of foods we eat—meat, poultry and eggs, dairy, beans, grains, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds, beverages, and more—and guide you to a science based, sensible way of eating for life that keeps you, our planet, and our society healthy. I also address the environmental and social impact of the food we eat.
If you have ever woken up wondering the heck you should eat, this book is for you. Check out the trailer and order it at Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, or get it at your local bookstore.
Wishing you health & happiness,
Mark Hyman, MD
