That comic where Miles introduces Peter B. as his uncle and Aaron (who is alive in that au) has to lie like he’s been in that secret relationship for months but then actually falls for Peter.
But then Miles does it again with fucking Miguel and Aaron, Peter B. And Miguel have to start prepping new excuses as they explain their throupleness to Rio and Jefferson.

Helloo, can I request Miguel with an artist reader who draws him a lot? 👉👈 Like the reader has a secret crush on Miguel and he inspires them a lot, without even knowing it. And maybe there's a Gwen-and-Miles-like-situation where Miguel by accident discovers the drawings of him in their sketchbook?
AAAAAAAA ANON THIS IS SO CUTE !! tbh i wanted to finish the miggy fic i had for ate @binibinileonara bc i wanted to connect these two together, BUT I COULDN'T RESIST, I'LL MAKE IT SEPARATE BC WHY NOT !! thank you for the lovely idea btw (i also had an idea like this actually in my notes) THANKS FOR GIVING ME THE OOMPH TO DO IT !!

Tumblr media
you always had this desire to capture all that interested you in its full beauty, in its unbridled greatness. that was, to you, the essence of all your art pieces; they always reflected how you saw the world, how you saw nature, how you saw people.
you never believed people had one or two faces to them, you believed people were multi-faceted, that every person was a kaleidoscope of beauty, skills, quirks, flaws, fears, hopes, and dreams. you loved capturing every bit of people who intrigued you the best you could, and you hoped that if you stood back and admired the big picture that was them, going over the details and fibers that made each person their own–from the good, bad, pretty and ugly details–you would finally see the whole, uncut image of the person you were illustrating; who you were painting in the colors you saw them in, the colors that stuck with you and filled the empty canvas of your mind with all sorts of shapes and splotches of hues and shades that formed the image of them when their name would come to mind.
and for some reason... that person to you right now was miguel o'hara. you had a lot of things to say about him, even words that many would argue don't exist. you felt a myriad of feelings when you were around miguel, and you knew there was more than just the dictating leader miguel that everyone was familiar with. like all people, miguel, too, was an explosion of different kinds of colors to you–colors that only you could see, because when he was around you... he was more than just the cool, calm, and collected boss everyone saw him as.
he was much more caring, much more funny around you. his smile when you told him a funny story illuminated a bright yellow and a warm orange to you–his eyes would twinkle and you'd see the hazelnut brown in his eyes, and a shade of what appeared to be coffee brown at the bottom of his irises. he exuded a commanding aura, a dark, cool blue–but when paired with you, and only you, he exuded a bright red; a color of fiery passion, intimacy, and most of all... attraction.
he was the subject of your affections, you, the soulful and emotional artist that admired him and all that he was from afar and up close. you admired the way he held your hand when you were scared on a few missions, you admired how gently he held you when you two were caught between a rock and a hard place; and how soft and loving his eyes were when they gazed at you. you knew he might have felt a platonic kind of love for you, what with being so comfortable around you and all, but you felt a different kind of love for him–and you hated denying your creative side the indulgence of capturing him in all his beauty.
hence, you began slowly filling the empty spaces of your sketchbooks and notebooks, or whatever other papers lay around when inspiration struck you, with images of him and only him. you caught his face in moments where he was nonchalant, disappointed, angry, grumpy, and... smiling.
when you witnessed his smile for the first time when you met him, that image was burned into your retinas, into your mind, into your heart. you saw that smile from the minute you went to bed to the minute you woke up, the only thing that saddened you was that you could never hold that man who smiled at you and made your heart beat a little faster–you could only watch him and be with him at a distance. but art was the bridge between you two that'd close that distance you wanted to cover so, so badly.
you did, at times, believe what you were doing was... a little creepy. you refused to let anyone see your sketchbooks even before you drew him, and that was out of embarrassment at your drawings. but now, it was a new kind of embarrassment, a feeling adjacent to guilt and disgust at how nobody but he could fill your mind and have you wanting to keep him in your mind by feeding yourself, indulging yourself in putting him on paper and coloring him in; to be with him at a closer perspective than how you two were in the real world.
you had to admit it–seeing him constantly in your mind, wanting to let thoughts of him out on paper as you wanted to be through with imagining him, but knew you couldn't the more and more you portrayed him–it meant you... wanted him. you really, really loved him.
you knew nobody should know, nobody had to know about this little crush you had on miguel. you'd rather die than have someone peek at your sketchbook that was filled with all kinds of drawings of him. but unfortunately, the man himself bore witness to your caricatures and illustrations of him when you left your sketchbook at his office.
you ran as quickly as you could, praying he hadn't opened it out of curiosity. he was always asking you what you were up to, and you'd immediately shut your sketchbook and laugh awkwardly, claim you were merely doodling. you always left out the part that you were constantly drawing him, and only ever him; and now, he'd find out.
as you entered his office, scouring with your eyes for your sketchbook, a figure emerged from the darkness behind you and gave a slight cough. "this is yours, isn't it?" that low, fluid voice was none other than miguel's. you turned around in fear of what he was going to look like–would any of the faces you drew seeing him as be one of the faces you'd see?
to your surprise... no. he had a different, completely new face that you had never drawn him in; a flustered state. he was blushing, his angled cheeks and high nose bridge were covered in a pink-red hue–and he was grinning. he handed you the sketchbook with a now sheepish smile. "i'm sorry, i wasn't sure if it was yours. i had to... look through for a name. and, um... it was very–" he wanted to continue, but then, he saw you were on the verge of tears.
"i'm... sorry..." you muttered, feeling incredibly ashamed of yours and busted for having indulged in drawing him without him knowing. guilt stirred in your stomach and elicited tears to well up in your eyes. miguel smiled, and as his eyebrows curved upwards together to form a look of reassurance, he placed both hands on your shoulders.
"listen, you have a wonderful talent. i'm sorry if you don't hear that enough, but that changes today. i'm so... wow, i'm so flattered you thought i was good enough to be drawn that way. it feels... amazing, to know an artist sees me fit to be their, what would you call it?" he asked as he wiped a tear rolling down your cheek away from you.
"a... muse." you whispered, wiping the rest of your tears away. miguel chuckled. "right, a muse." he said as he inched closer to you, with the sweetest smile on his face. "i might sound really crazy right now, but... i want to be your muse. i really, really want to be your muse." he said, with emphasis on 'your'.
your face lightened up as the tears that welled up gave your eyes a glassy look, and you saw the blush on his deepen as you became more and more flustered. you smiled and wrapped your arms around his chest, pulling him in for an embrace you needed to release. "and i want to be your artist. only yours." you whispered, to which miguel reciprocated your hug. and it was here that you witnessed him in a new color, a pinkish, reddish hue that made you feel all kinds of happiness and excitement.
a love meant to be captured and painted in with bursts of emotion and care for one another.
a/n: I'M SO SORRY IF IT DIDN'T COME OUT THAT WELL NGL I MADE THIS A LITTLE RUSHED 😭😭😭 BUT I LOVE MIGGY HERE PLSSS AND I HOPE Y'ALL LOVE HIM HERE, TOO <333

how about johnathan x a spiderperson?
General hcs for Jonathan with a spider person s/o
WAHOO
Apologies for any typos and such!! Also this may be
Bad
Because I'm realizing my knowledge of alchemax is v limited since my only exposure to spiderman is through spiderverse 😔☝️
Sobs I was so excited for this prompt, I was legitimately waiting for someone to send something like in but the second I started writing my brain imploded and
I'm so disappointed in myself <\\3
I tossed in all I could remember so :(! I hope it's alright!!
Tumblr media
Okay him working at Alchemax and likely being a villain and probably against spiderpeople in general (see the first movie, the entire alchemax staff immediately attempting to attack Miles n Peter on sight), you'd both have to keep your relationship a secret
For him to keep his job and for you to not have any leverage used against you; I mean can you imagine if one of your enemies found out you had a boyfriend? And use that against you? Horrid
For convenience let's say you guys are dating long before the idea of the collider is introduced; easier to fall in love with someone when the entire multiverse is at risk/j
Imagine meeting after trying to stop alchemax from doing.. something..
Yeah idk my brains mush, but it warrants you to come down and stop them
Cue you and Jonathan meeting literally just; "oh hes kinda cute :]"
This was funnier in my head
Overall very very interested in any unique abilities you have
Like you know how miles has his electricity and in invisibility? Or Miguel having his fangs? While I don't think every spiderperson has a special power, I do think at least some do
So if you happen to be one of those spiderpeople he's VERY interested
Took a while for you both to warm up to each other because one side was "oh you better not turn me in" and the other is "oh you better not be trying to make me let my guard down"
Yk usual distrust between hero and not-so-powerful-villain
You guys definitely recreate the kiss
You know the one
You're hanging upside down, and
:3
Dates can, unfortunately, get messy :(
Between the having to sneak around and being the towns heroc it's hard to find a time and a place
Oh speaking of that sneaking around thing, it'd have to be a while until you eventually take the mask off around him
He thinks you're.. pretty
Insists you take off the mask more when the two of you are alone
Sneaks and runs off whenever you need to come to alchemax to do something while everyone else tries to take you down

Some of My Scrapped Punkflower Fics
Exactly what the title says, but I don't want to let these go to waste
Over Christmas break, Miles’ mom learns how to knit.
It stems from the fact that she doesn’t like having a lot of free time on her hands. But since school is out and his dad won’t let her spend more than forty-eight hours — or what she considers a break — at the hospital a week, there’s an abundance of it for all of them. Snow falls endlessly beyond the walls of their apartment, making for more than a couple long, lazy days spent inside, hands and weighted blankets curled around mugs and their shoulders. Old Christmas movies are the only thing on TV.
So. She digs around in their spare closet and emerges with two knitting needles. They’re from her grandma, she says, and Miles secretly reveres them — the blunt tips, the lengthy shafts, and the tapers with chips in the wood from before both of their times.
She lets him choose from the bundles of yarn three colors: orchid, yellow, and white.
The next morning, he wakes to a pair of finger-less gloves on his bedside table. The stitches are not entirely consistent, yet they’re warm and colorful.
He loves them, almost as much as he loves winter, and nowhere close to as much as he loves her.
“Any idea what this is about?”
Miles shrugs and shifts to make room for Gwen to sit on the carpet beside him. “No. Miguel didn’t tell you?”
“Nope.”
The topic settled for now, his eyes drift and land on two figures across the announcement hall, steadily coming forward. They’re somehow easy to pick out in the crowd.
Hobie shakes Pavitr by the shoulders, giggling, and something in Miles aches, just below the space between his ribs.
There’s a tapping, feedback, then a throat clearing. He turns back to look at the stage.
“Hello, everybody, and thank you for coming on such short notice. Rest assured, nothing is wrong,” Miguel starts. The room lets out a collective sigh of relief. “But the holiday season is coming up. Lyla and I — mostly her — thought it would be nice to do something special. All of the Society is welcome to participate, but it’s not mandatory.”
“He is a surprisingly level man when he’s not trying to body slam me into the nearest train,” Miles mutters. Someone huffs hotly in his ear.
“Good one,” Hobie says, dropping down on Miles’ other side.
Miguel continues. “For the first time ever, we will be doing Secret Santa. Shortly, you will fill out a wish list of gift ideas. Then, you will draw a random name from a box — their dimension and wish list will also be included. Presents will be delivered by me or Lyla. Afterwards, you can guess who your Secret Santa was. The ultimate deadline is Christmas day.”
A week away.
I bet you can guess who Miles got :] I also remember writing a section that I really loved where he asked his mom what his dad got her for Christmas when they were dating, and later, Gwen came over. She was having trouble getting Pavitr a gift. Miles suggested a plant to take care of, meanwhile, he was making a custom bright red leather jacket for Hobie
I cannot for the life of me find these sections

Ayo merry Christmas guys *slap another Duskpunk fanfic in your face*
warmer
Pim has got dragged to celebrate Christmas with Miles, Gwen, Pavitr and Hobie. They've decided to go celebrate at Peter B's dimension, at his house to be specific, and there's a lot of people who also got invited. Almost all of them are spider-people from the HQ. Sure they've already had a celebration at the HQ but this is a bit more private with closer people.
The party was bright and loud as people talking whilst Christmas musics playing in the background. Gwen and Miles chatting at the snack table, Pavitr trying to convince Peter and Miguel to let him bring Gayatri to the party which Miguel did not approve, and Hobie setting up some harmless pranks on people for fun, while Pim just standing in the corner, wanting to go home but too scared to leave.
That, until he felt a weight of someone's arm on his shoulders as they leaned onto him. You guessed it, it's Hobie, the one and only person who willing to invent Pim's personal space without the fear of getting hate by the guy.
Pim stumbled a bit because of how fucking tall Hobie is.
"Hobie, get off me."
A stern, but quiet voice spoke as he looked up at the punk with an unamused look.
"Let's ditch, mate. it's boring in 'ere"
Hobie whispered lowly as his eyes wandering around the room.
"that's disrespectful."
"ya didn't even want t' be 'ere."
"still disrespectful."
Hobie rolled his eyes and pulled Pim a bit closer, keeping his arm firmly around the shorter guy's shoulders.
"come on, mate. Just go out and get a bit of fresh air, yeah?"
Pim couldn't deny that the idea was what he wanted ever since he got here, so he agreed to just go out, get some air and come back in.
So here they are, standing in Peter's front yard side by side. Hobie have the urge to pull out a cigarette and smock but he knows Pim wouldn't like that.
Pim stared off to space, mind clear as he finally get to escape the overwhelming amount of people in the party and relax a bit. Hobie did the same but occasionally glance at the guy next to him. The two stood in silence.
"See? Pretty nice, eh?" Hobie broke the silence.
"it's cold as hell."
Pim came from a place where the coldest day was at 29 c°, so being outside in America winter air made his body shiver from the cold.
Hobie chuckled and took a step closer to Pim.
"my body's pretty warm, y'know? Maybe if-"
"I'd rather freeze to death, thanks."
Hobie scoffed, slightly disappointed that he didn't get the reaction he wanted but eh, Pim just gotta be Pim.
After a few minutes of silence, it starting to snow and the air got colder every second.
"'ey, let's go back inside before yur ass catch a—" Hobie cut himself off when he turned to Pim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pim was looking up at the sky, completely mesmerized by the snow that are falling in front of him. His eyes lit up with sparks as the Christmas lights hit his face in the right angle.
It's like time freeze, Hobie blinked and stared at Pim as he feels his heart picked up a pace. It's a rare sight to see Pim with anything other than exhaustion written all over his face.
The moment passed, and Pim finally noticed Hobie's eyes on him. He looked back as his eyes flickered between the side and Hobie's eyes nervously.
"...What? What are you looking at?"
Hobie didn't respond, just moved in closer causing Pim to fell a step back as his face heat up slightly. He was too nervous to get too close.
"...Hobes-?"
Their eyes locked, Hobie grabbed Pim's chin and lift the guy's face up slightly as their face slowly get closer, and clo—
"Yo guys! Peter said it's almost time to exchange the presents so he-..."
Miles stood at the front door, his POV was that Hobie has his hand on Pim's chin, their faces almost touching, and their eyes looking directly at him.
Pim panicked and immediately pulled himself away from Hobie. His face flushed as he looked away and clear his throat. The taller guy regained his composure and cough a little.
Awkward silence. The three stood there under the snow for solid 2 minutes.
"Did I...interrupted somethin'?" Miles finally asked.
"Yea-"
"No. No, you didn't."
Once again, Pim cut Hobie off and rushed his way back into the house without making any eye contact.
"oh, c'mon, luv!" Hobie chuckled.
Miles' eyes followed Pim for a moment, then back to Hobie with a confused look.
"So I interrupted somethin', didn't I..?"
"Nah, don't worry about it, Peter Pan."
Hobie smirked, making his way inside the house and gave Miles a friendly pat on the shoulder.
At the end of the night, the 5 of them volunteer to help Peter B clean up the place. After the exhausting night, Pim still stay to make sure all his friends get home safe, leaving him and Hobie the last.
Pim has been avoiding Hobie all night after that moment, maybe this is a chance to say something.
"Happy Holiday, Hobie."
Hobie was about to open his mouth when Pim spoke up and stopped him. His fingers tapping on his watch to open the portal back home.
"Oi, you still owe me somethin', luv."
"I owe you nothing."
Pim replied bluntly, but deep down, he knew exactly what Hobie meant.
The portal open with an obnoxiously loud noise and bright colors (at least in Pim's opinion), Pim winced at the brightness and about to go in when suddenly,
"don't worry," Hobie whispered and kissed Pim on the cheek. "I'll get ya next time, Pimphat."
Tumblr media
Hobie jumped into his own portal which nobody knows when did he opened it.
Pim didn't move, a blush increased on his face as he felt his heart raced and butterflies in his stomach. He don't like the way he liked how Hobie say his full first name. "Pimphat." That's going to repeat in his head for a while.
MJ was dealing with the remained decorations when she saw Pim through the window, just standing in the snow.
"uh...kid? You ok?"
She opened the front door to check if Pim was fine, which help the poor guy to snapped out of his thoughts and returned to reality.
"Yes! I'm- I'm okay, Ms. Parker. Uh- Tell Peter and Mayday I said Happy holiday!"
Pim nervously responded and quickly leaped into the portal.
Again, English is not my first language so if I made any mistake, feel free to kindly correct them. Thank you.

Dude I absolutely adore your blog and your OC?? Disco spider is everything I strive to be in life 😭
Also, about disco spider. Does she have any powers outside of like the normal set spider powers? [Like Miles invisibility and electricity?]
Thank you so much!! Disco was the whole reason I learned how to draw recently lol
But yes, she does!! (sorry if this is long cause it kinda has to do with her arc and theres like a story behind it sorryr lojfkghdjj)
Disco-Spider's Summer Song
Diane's special attack is her Summer Song, otherwise called 'A Donna' by her team-mates. It's kind of a 'Black Canary' type power, named after the Disco singer Donna Summer rather than the season.
While performing or in battle, Diane can belt a high-note loud and high enough short near-by electronics and stun or daze people.
The dazing effect is useful for giving performances a mystifying feeling, but unlike Miles cannot do it on command nearly as easy.
It doesn't work if she yells, and she has to warm up her scales to even be able to attempt it.
They're less like Ariana Grande whistle notes and more like the belted notes of the song 'Funkytown'.
If it's done without some form of music, it's nearly impossible to do - and she has only done it without music maybe 3 times before - once being at Miguel after Gwen gets sent home.
She can however attempt it more if she's playing her bass Opal. However she'd never go swinging Opal around in battle the way Hobie does (lol)
Disco, Hobie, & the Summer Song more context on how it plays into her arc
About a year into knowing each other, Diane and Hobie discovered during a battle that her Summer Song reacts to Hobie's guitar playing
Albeit with a lot of drawbacks.
The power is a lot less predictable with Hobie's music style - and when she attempts to hit a Donna, it's effects will be partially influenced by his playing.
This is implied, with her Summer Song being most powerful when the both of them are playing.
But every successful Donna she's hit with Hobie leaves her voice raw for at least at day. Hobie's music is heavily influenced by the Gwen Stacy of his universe, and although Diane can match her range, she sits a whole octave above Diane.
Because of that, singing with Hobie - in battle or on stage - pushes her to the top of her register. So they don't do it often. Besides, she hates singing hard rock.
BUTTT the two of them do have a 'secret weapon' they haven't ever tried in person. At one point in knowing each other, Hobie and Diane dated for two weeks, fought the entire time, wrote and an album and then broke up.
They actually were in a pretty sour place at the time, and the last argument they had came down to eventually making a song together to settle it - a very angry and uptempo funk-rock song.
They have only ever played the song twice.
The time they played it before the breakup - it was enough to cause a good chunk of damage to Hobie's houseboat, and they broke up immediately after.
The second time they played it, it was Gwen's idea in an attempt to get them to reconnect. The three of them polished the song, with Gwen acting as mediator on drums.
The effects of the finished song were pretty catastrophic (in a good way) -
However it took a large hit to Diane - causing her to lose her voice for 3 or so days. She slept most of that time and was completely exhausted and out of it. A bit guilt-ridden, Hobie took care of her then and they rekindled from there.
Now they're back to being close - somethings. A good something, though.
They still haven't played the song again. Hobie always pushed Diane to develop vocally and push herself range wise, but that song is probably the only time he's like 'hey maybe dont go for that one.'
but Diane is adamant that if they were to try a third time, they'd get it completely right.
And for anyone who read this far (thank you soo much!!!!), and this is the song they 'wrote' before their breakup
[It's by Kimbra, the woman who featured on 'Somebody I Used to Know'. It's a rock-funk song where her vocal range is CRAZY. Her voice could totally tear a houseboat to shreds]

Dust Volume 7, Number 9
Tumblr media
Les Filles de Illighadad
Another collection of short reviews closes out this week at Dusted, with selections ranging from avant garde classical to free jazz to whacko punk to an unusually gender-inclusive guitar band from Niger.  Writers this time included the usual stalwarts, Bill Meyer, Ray Garraty, Jennifer Kelly, Jonathan Shaw, Bryon Hayes, Tim Clarke, Andrew Forell and Chris Liberato. Enjoy.
All Set — All Set (RogueArt)
youtube
In 1957, serialist composer Milton Babbitt’s All Set applied his language-transforming compositional tool kit to the sonic resources of a jazz orchestra. Six decades and change down the road, such ideas haven’t exactly infiltrated the mainstream of either jazz or orchestral music, but they’ve become as handy for some music makers as hammers and nails are for carpenters. So, when saxophonic colleagues Ingrid Laubrock (who sticks to tenor here) and Stéphane Payen (playing the straight alto) needed to come up with a framework to make music together, out came Babbitt’s notion, which they did not play straight, but used as a suggestions for writing their own tunes, and for good measure named their band after the Babbitt’s piece The formative influence manifests in zig-zagging intervallic leaps, but instead of treating these of ends in themselves, the saxophonists carry on constant overlapping dialogues. The rhythm section of Chris Tordini (bass) and Tom Rainey (drums) can’t help but swing, but they do so in a shifting, discontinuous fashion that occasionally leaves it to the saxophonists to play the gaps as well as the horns they use the fill them.
Bill Meyer
Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio & Alexander Von Schlippenbach — The Field (No Business)
The Field by Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio & Alexander von Schlippenbach
Motion Trio is one of tenor saxophonist Rodrigo Amado’s more enduring combos. But it’s not one that has played often in the years preceding this concert, a consequence of the growth and success of its members; Amado, cellist Miguel Mira and drummer Gabriel Ferrandini all keep busy with other projects. So, this encounter with pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, which took place in Vilnius, Lithuania in 2019, was not just a reenactment of the trio’s favorite tactic of improvising with a strong fourth musician, but a reunion of the trio itself. This means that the process-oriented can listen for three comrades finding reviving a common language at the same time that they confront with an outsider’s efforts to deal with it. Schlippenbach’s playing brings an unusual harmonic density to Motion Trio’s music, which seems to coax an especially dynamic and at times reflective response from the saxophonist. Ferandini, on the other hand, proposes shapes and timbres that seem to build out from Schlippenbach’s intricate constructions, while Mira keeps up a steady, almost subliminal stream of contrapuntal commentary that is simultaneously assertive and nearly subliminal. But some of the concert’s most exciting moments come when the pianist lays out for a second, and you can hear Motion Trio’s members responding to each other.
Bill Meyer
BangGang Lonnie Bands — H2K On the Way (TF Entertainment \ Anti Media)
youtube
Lots of artists have watched small projects intended only as appetizers grow to surpass their grander efforts. BangGang Lonnie Bands’ recent work, especially his King of Detroit albums, contained a few gems but were bloated in length. There was an ironic twist, as Lonnie’s claimed the throne to the city where he no longer resides. While it remains to be seen what the rapper brings after H2K On the Way, this 15 minutes long EP is his leanest work in years, leaving a long list of LPs behind. Lonnie no longer flirts with scam rap and returns to murder music, fusing gutsiest Michigan-style punchlines with no hostage Californian approach to verse spitting. He’s the naughtiest when he’s trolling the music industry: “Copped a 100 pounds of crank \ should have bought a verse from Drake.”
Ray Garraty
Buffalo Daughter — We Are the Times (Anniversary)
youtube
Buffalo Daughter always caught in the cracks between mainstream and experimental, layering vocal sweetness over chopped up blippy beats, not as wildly original as OOIOO, but not exactly girl pop either. This latest album comes after a long break and a slightly less lengthy COVID lockdown, and it’s got some prickly, dreamy jams, part dance, part pop, part funk, part inscrutable. “ET (Densha)” is the mad, moody single, full of low-end synth blasts and thundering drums, but leavened by high whispery vocals. It’s like Shackleton sound-tracking a Hello Kitty movie. “Global Warming Will Kill Us All” is similarly ominous, with vocoder chants and trippy pop choruses and blown out by phosphorescent blots of synth, but I like “Don’t Punk Out” the best, because it struts like an animatronic James Brown, the funk percolating through gleaming futuristic swells of sounds. If disco’s going to come back, can it be this weird and disorienting?
Jennifer Kelly
Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons — Jazz 4 Johnny (Feel It Records)
Jazz 4 Johnny by Fashion Pimps And The Glamazons
This new EP from Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons manages to fit into the tradition of whacko punk records from Cleveland (and what a tradition that is…) and to comment on the problematic nature of tradition itself. There’s a decided No Wave vibe to Jazz 4 Johnny: listen to it, and you’ll flash on Buy Contortions and on Robert Quine’s attempts to channel Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders through his guitar. At points you’ll swear there’s a sax somewhere in the buzz and thunder that the Fashion Pimps create — but that’s just Richard Glamazon’s skronky guitar tone, which does Quine one better by not only aping the cadences of a free jazz solo but also the sound of a brassy axe. That’s fun, but we should also recall No Wave’s sharp antipathies for concepts like “tradition” or “perpetuity.” A lot of those bands wanted to neutralize their own existence and thus evade the ultimately conservative action of canonization. Other tunes on Jazz 4 Johnny are more engaged with the later Downtown noise rock scene. The guitar on “Dream Police” gestures toward early Sonic Youth—but even there, the band can’t quite help themselves. Vocalist Steve Chainsaw shouts, “Show me your DNA!” Most of those references are based in Manhattan, so what about Cleveland? The city often recedes into the background when conversations turn to rock-n-roll history, which is too bad. Fashion Pimps and the Glamazons don’t sound all that much like electric eels or Pere Ubu, but the band is tuned into a similarly feral, post-industrial ethos and an avant-garde sensibility that makes anti-art into art you can dance to. Or break things to. Or both. Which may be the best response to the wild and smart tunes on this record.
Jonathan Shaw
Les Filles de Illighadad — At Pioneer Works (Sahel Sounds)
At Pioneer Works by Les Filles de Illighadad
The entrancing At Pioneer Works documents the American touring debut of Niger-based Tuareg ensemble Les Filles de Illighadad, specifically a pair of shows at the eponymous Brooklyn venue. Travelling as a four-piece ensemble, the band created a swirling three-guitar maelstrom, as captured on this pristine-sounding recording. Founder Fatou Seidi Ghali — the first known woman Tuareg guitarist — and her cousin Alamnou Akrouni were joined by Fatimata Ahmadelher, the only other known woman Tuareg guitarist, with Ghali’s brother accompanying on rhythm guitar. Blending the traditional calabash drum and call-and-response vocals of the tende song form with the electric guitar, Ghali and company steep the communal origins of their sound with a gentle clangor. The music is simultaneously hypnotic and driving, the four performers acting as one multi-limbed, multi-throated being. For the most part, Ghali is content setting the pace and playing along with the melody. One exception is the trio of deftly executed solos during “Chakalan,” where she demonstrates her prowess with six strings. Reports from those Brooklyn shows indicate that the band completely enraptured their audience, and if At Pioneer Works represents only a fraction of how powerful Les Filles de Illighadad are live, this writer doesn’t doubt that at all.

Henri Guédon — Karma (Outre National)
Karma by Henri Guédon
You don’t have to be a big fan of R.E.M. to feel overly familiar with “It’s The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” In dire times, it’s such an easy go-to tune that even adherence to lockdown prescriptions won’t keep it out of your ears. So, deejays, we’ve done your research for you, and found a new tune to soundtrack defiant frugging in the face of disaster. It’s called “Fin Di Mond,” by Martinique-based singer/percussionist/sculptor Henri Guédon. It, and eight more similarly motion-motivating tunes, can be found on Karma, a predominantly celebratory set of retro-futuristic, Franco-Caribbean grooves. Mind you, this music wasn’t retro when Guédon recorded it 46 years ago; the synth lines that swoop through its massed percussion were probably the height of modernity back in the day. Heard now, this music is just the thing to put time itself on pause.

HTRK — Rhinestones (Heavy Machinery)
Rhinestones by HTRK
Rhinestones is a sneaky one from Melbourne’s HTRK, a slight but incisive release that seems minor compared to their previous albums but cuts just as deep. Running to a brutally economical 26 minutes, most of the album is built around delayed guitar, drum machine and Jonnine Standish’s ghostly, dejected voice. To a world laid low by the pandemic, Standish sounds startlingly apposite for these times, and track titles like “Sunlight Feels Like Bee Stings,” “Real Headfuck” and “Straight to Hell” signpost the vibe clearly. This is sad, skeletal music, sure to offer a degree of solace if you’re weary, wrung out or wasted — 2021 in a nutshell.

Matt Jencik — Matt & Lyra (Trouble In Mind)
Matt & Lyra by matt jencik
Matt Jencik is a member of doomy, spacey Chicago band Implodes, plus he’s released two solo guitar albums: 2017’s Weird Times and 2019’s Dream Character. For his latest, Matt & Lyra, part of Trouble In Mind’s Explorers Series, Jencik focuses on the thick, fuzzy tones of the Russian-built Lyra-8 synthesizer (hence the album title). Having said that, he does pull out his guitars to add some acoustic strumming to “Cmellow Ayellow,” and builds 16-minute closer “Clandestine Half Pipe” around electric guitar drones before the Lyra begins to dominate the frame. Jencik apparently made this music to help him sleep, and while this music is suited to nocturnal listening, with an all-enveloping warmth, there’s also the sense of something looming in the darkness. Whether this presence is reassuring or threatening probably depends on the frame of mind with which you approach this immersive 35-minute release.

Joakim — Second Nature (Tiger Sushi)
youtube
French producer and Tiger Sushi founder Joakim’s Second Nature is a reflection on the state of the world. It combines samples of whales, elephants, toads and other wildlife with the kind of pop facing ambient techno from aughts chillout compilations.  It is testament to his skill as a producer that the record doesn’t wear out its welcome despite the occasional lapse into the anodyne and the associations this kind of gentle background music evokes. When Joakim disturbs the tranquility on tracks like “Sferics & Whistlers” with its crackles of static and breakdown of discordant notes, Angel Bat Dawid’s klezmatic clarinet on “Waves Ahead” and the komische roll of “Kepler-39” that one is jolts from reverie and pays close attention, but at 16 tracks it feels like Second Nature needs more such moments.

The Killing Popes — Ego Kills (Shhpuma)
Ego Kills by The Killing Popes
Thank god this unfortunately named combo isn’t someone’s absurd scheme to crossbreed the sounds of Killing Joke and Smoking Popes. Instead, the Berlin-based project exists at the crossroads of jazz and electronics. I know what you’re thinking, and no this isn’t a modern take on acid jazz; this crew makes a jazz-on-acid sort of racket. The core Popes are drummer-percussionist Oli Steidle and multi-instrumentalist Dan Nicholls, who together conjure up a brew with a myriad of ingredients. Their genre-defying fusion of disciplines does have a center, however. Steidle’s dextrous drumming and the elastic band bass proffered by Phil Donkin serve as an anchor point for the other elements — both melodic and bizarre — to revolve around. The addition of vocals inserts the sense of narrative, creating a gravity that tugs at the sounds and prevent them from spiralling out of orbit. As zany as Ego Kills may be, it’s jazz-like enough for afficionados to appreciate. On their own, each of the instrumentalists demonstrates a mastery of their craft; together, they create an uncanny sort of magic.

Norman W. Long — BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN (Hausu Mountain)
BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN by Norman W. Long
Chicago soundscapist Norman W. Long walks his southeast Chicago neighborhood, listens deeply and records the ambient sounds of nature, the echoes of railyards, wasteland and industrial sites both working and abandoned. Adding subtle electronics and treatments to his field recordings, Long conjures atmospheres that speak to space, atrophy and the delicate symbiosis between nature and humanity. On BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN he immerses listeners in the often unnoticed aural richness at the intersection of the built, neglected and the natural. His choices about when to augment or to present his sources as are forms a narrative of associations, displacements and tensions. Long’s is also a story of reclamation and recognition, a rumination on the situation of the largely minority and migrant populations who live in the neighborhood, many of whom toil as essential workers across the city in the face of ongoing prejudice and hostility. Site specificity is integral to Long’s art but his themes are universal.

Andy Moor — Music For Safe Piece (Unsounds)
Music For Safe Piece by Andy Moor
Music For Safe Piece is the antidote for every piece of children’s music that’s ever made you want to not hear another played or sung note, ever again. Electric guitarist Andy Moor (the Ex, Dog Faced Hermans) and dancer Valentina Campora have included their sons, Elio and Milo, in onstage performance ever since they were so young, they had to be swaddled and strapped to one of their parents in order to participate. The recorded results of this shared adventure are raw, unpredictable and exhilarating. Moor’s guitar, occasionally augmented by a child’s vocalization, a foot pounding the floor or some choice tune fragments on a cassette tape, blazes a trail of reverberations, scrapes and wobbles. In performance, the boys are known to get in on the act, helping pop to make his sounds while mom handles the movement. This music isn’t particularly pacific, but it’s pretty close to the way kids actually play when no one’s stopping them. The technologically adept will find a QR code inside the CD’s gatefold, which unlocks the short film, “Safe Piece.”

RXM Reality — Advent (Orange Milk)
Advent by RXM REALITY
Long-time Hausu Mountain dweller Mike Meegan has relocated to the Orange Milk abode, taming his frenetic brand of electronic mayhem in the process. The blown-out, off-the-grid beats are still plentiful, but with Advent Meegan injects his tunes with melody. He’s also allowed himself to slow down and relax. The vast expanse of “Character Limit” literally breathes deeply as Meegan allows it to swirl around. He drinks up the pleasant melodic aromas of the track before switching gears and unloading burst after burst of explosive beats. “These Days” comes off as an electro-shoegaze hybrid, with gauzy synth pads that float effortlessly among bouncy percussion clusters. Of course, the signature RXM Reality sound — a hybrid of 1990s video game and blockbuster movie — is present and accounted for in tracks like “Allure,” “Screaming,” and “Grip of Evil.” Yet even these balls of energy are tempered with shades of consonance. Having blunted some of the jagged edges of his frantic brand of electronic music, Meegan fits in nicely among the kooky ranks of the Orange Milk imprint.

Macie Stewart — Mouth Full of Glass (Orindal)
Mouth Full of Glass by Macie Stewart
You might already know Macie Stewart as one-half of the complicated indie rock duo Ohmme or for her regular appearances as violinist of choice in Chicago jazz and experimental music scenes, but this solo LP shows another side.  These eight songs are lushly, intricately arranged with strings, orchestral instruments and brass, recorded with precision and clarity, but nonetheless personal and introspective.  “Garter Snake” sheathes flaying honesty with baroque instrumental flourishes. Stewart’s voice is bare and unaffected as she confides, “I am addicted…to indecision,” but she makes riveting choices in framing the melody.  Old-fashioned movie strings swell in the spaces between talking-right-to-you verses; agile guitar chords mark time.  “Finally” begins in bare, Bahian guitar play, as Stewart’s voice flutters and floats an unpredictable but fetching tune.  Strings swoop in at the end of the phrase, lavish and lucid.  The title track unlooses massed, harmonized vocals on the spare architecture of picked guitar, a shock of extravagant sung beauty in an otherwise restrained palette.  Like Wendy Eisenberg, but with different instruments, Stewart weaves post-modern complexity into the delicate fabric of pop songs.  The difficulty — combined with the beauty — makes this music memorable.

Stingray — Feeding Time (La Vida es un Mus)
Feeding Time by Stingray
In places where heavy music is played and endlessly debated, 1982 might be most strongly associated with English street punk — see the ersatz “genre” of UK82, which enshrines the year and ties it to acid green liberty spikes and scuffed Doc Martens. Fair enough. But street punk was thoroughly informed by the dirty working-class metal being made by bands like Motörhead and Venom, and this new EP by Stingray celebrates those noisy intersections of influence. Of course, Stingray’s version of celebration likely involves several cases of Bass Ale, an eightball of something white and a fistfight or two. Or five. The English band features members of other current hard-driving acts, including Subdued, the Chisel and Chain of Flowers, but Stingray doesn’t prize currency. The songs are short, hard and nasty, landing their punches like a “Bomber” and also like a bunch of “Death Dealers.” The guys in Stingray understand the past they’re drawing on, but does music like this have a future? Fuck knows. Do any of us have a future? Does the earthball? The tunes are less interested in such flights of existential angst, and more intent on their rapacious appetites for speed, sweat and raunch. It’s Feeding Time. Get it while you can.

Nick Storring — Newfoundout (Mappa)
Newfoundout by Nick Storring
You’ll miss some towns if you blink. The ones that have given their names to the compositions on Newfoundout might confound both eyesight and your GPS, since they are all ghost towns in Ontario, Canada. The music that Nick Storring has made to go with these titles is correspondingly elusive. Performed entirely by the composer, using strings, percussion and whatever bric-a-brac happened to be at hand, it is by turns lush, staccato and propulsive. “The sounds are never particularly difficult, but they rarely telegraph where they’re going, so if you listen passively, sooner or later you’ll look up in dismay, wondering how things got from where they were to where they are now. “Khartum,” for example, starts out sounding a lot like “In A Silent Way,” and finishes up sounding like a respectfully paced conference of grandfather clock chimes. So, put your head back and your ears forward, and let Mr. Storring do the driving.

Ten Ka — Sonic Geometry: Structures, Patterns And Forms (Jersika)
sonic geometry: structures, patterns and forms by TEN KA
Ten Ka is experimental side project of Deniss Pashkevich, a Latvian woodwinds player. The album title’s invocation of mathematics is apt, since this music is produced by dissimilar musical values acting upon each other. Pashkevich’s sound on tenor sax is full and soft around the edges, which is probably what it takes to be a working musician in a part of the world that doesn’t have much of a jazz tradition; on flutes, and especially the Bansuri, he hints at a far Eastern vibe. He also plays Fender Rhodes and prepared acoustic piano, bringing in further elements of user-friendly jazz, but also some sharp, Cage-y edges. But most of the nine tracks on Sonic Geometry: Structures, Patterns And Forms feature modular synths, which provide a foundation of pulsing bass patterns and some intriguing disruptive, acidic sizzles.  It all adds up to something simultaneously familiar and out of the ordinary.

Luis Vicente / Vasco Trilla — Made Of Dust (577 Records)
Made of Mist by Luis Vicente & Vasco Trilla
Not many improvisational settings are more exposed that the drums and trumpet duet. The two instruments are sufficiently different in timbre and frequency range that you can’t help but hear everything each player does, and also how those actions fit together. Trumpeter Luis Vicente and percussionist Vasco Trilla approach this situation with a combination of relaxed consideration and wholly earned confidence. Vicente can power-play when necessary, but for this session, he exercises restraint, using mutes to extract the most lyrical and vocal sounds he can muster. Trilla likewise seeks out the extremities of his kit, drawing continuous ribbons of widely differing characters, such as the alarm clock-like clatter and low-scrubbed drumskin heard on “Swirling Mist.” Their interactions are not just sonically novel, but trusting and deeply intimate.

Simon Waldram — So It Goes (Self-released)
So It Goes by Simon Waldram
Simon Waldram’s refrain-heavy eighth solo album, So It Goes, is a song cycle on love, loss and acceptance influenced by classic indie pop bands like The Field Mice, The Fat Tulips and The Go-Betweens. Indeed, it was the Grant McLennan-channelling “Don’t Worry,” a plaintive reassurance to a past lover, that initially caught my attention. But “I Miss The Sun” betters it, really laying on the Hammond, and squeezing in something noticeably absent from the other songs: a bridge. “When will we see the lull again/Feels like these dark days will never end,” Waldram sings, reestablishing buoyancy as it winds down repeating the title phrase. There’s promise elsewhere, like on the 1960’s-flavored psych strummer “Boats In The Sky,” before it lifts its bow in harmonic repetition a few too many times without checking its fuel gauge first, stranding itself in the firmament. “The Wild Wanderings of Wildebeests” is another one with potential, but its flawless first verse’s worth of strum and fuzz just recurs instead of building towards something of greater impact. The record hits its lowest point on the nearly nine-minute “Windswept,'' a “Primitive Painters'' rip that goes nowhere productive. When Waldram starts repeating ad infinitum “I miss you so much/ I can’t let go of this dream of ours,” you wish you could step in and save him from himself. A pleasant enough acoustic instrumental with birdsong follows in the form of “One May Afternoon,” serving as a much-needed palate cleanser and bridging the gap to the album’s closer. However, “Shimmer” is another moaner that never quite rounds into shape and instead fades out and then, unremarkably, back in.  There’s an EP’s worth of good material on So It Goes, but as an album it only ends up burning itself with the flame its carrying, leaving the listener wondering, “Who hurt you, Simon?”

First Thoughts: Take Back The Economy
An accessible guide to demystifying the economy and creating a more just and sustainable world
Take Back the Economy dismantles the idea that the economy is separate from us and best comprehended by experts, demonstrating that the economy is the outcome of the decisions and efforts we make every day. Full of exercises and inspiring examples from around the world, it shows how people can implement small-scale changes in their own lives to create ethical economies.
“Take Back the Economy is the single most farsighted and practical work enlightening us on the path to a steady transition toward a genuine postcapitalist world. It is based on the presupposition that reorienting the economy means much more than the control of production—it means reinventing ourselves, our communities, and our world in profound ways. Out of this act of ‘reframing’ there emerges a novel understanding of work, enterprise, market, property, even finance. In this wonderful new work in the tradition of Gibson-Graham, students, activists, movements, and communities will find a toolkit for ethical and effective action any time, any place.”
— Arturo Escobar, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Sitting at the table in our dining room, somewhat eagerly awaiting my laptops screen to load I fiddle with the loose strand of my jumper. There is exactly one week left of break left before Semester Two infiltrates into my life, taking a hold of my attentions and, hopefully, deplete most of my sources of energy, stress allotments and time entirely for the next twelve or so weeks. The notification that our first assignments for the upcoming semester has been made available for us ‘ding’s’ resoundedly at the login - I think, for a fleeting moment about whoever it is that invested the time into Microsoft Teams, and how I want to give them a warm hug for making my University career a little easier. Having expected this, I followed the familiar online route to my destination and brace myself for what was in store.
At first everything is alarmingly effortless. “Set up a blog,” I read, “using a platform of your choice.” Oh- this is too easy. I go through the motions of the ‘Journalling’ directions; answering the questions and engaging my brain to think back beyond the last month back to Semester One, steadfastly avoiding what is written underneath. However, the time will come, and it does, the letters for the second heading under ‘Essential’ spell: “Reading.”
I almost groan out loud, my mind flashing back to last semester and trudging through industry reports. I look, forlornly, at my copy of ‘Fahrenheit 451′ sitting on the other side of table. Begging to be opened and subsequently finished as soon as is possible. But. I have a mission. A mission under the heading ‘pre-work’
Please dont be boring, my mind repeats, as if on a mantra, please please don’t be boring.
I could not have been more wrong.
See, the thing is that I quite enjoy reading. By the time I had finished Year 6 in my school back in the UK I had comprehensively read every book in our schools library, at least once, and had already begun to tackle some more complex reads such as what became one of my all-time favourites, Miguel de Cervantes ‘Don Quixote’. Despite moving countries and schools several times I can’t pinpoint a time in this period of my life I was not reading. There was a down period majority of people call ‘high school’. Here I had set out with the best intentions, mis-lead by depictions of high school in television and literature (cheers, Disney) as to what it would actually entail; particularly through the last four years. And my love for reading temporarily abandoned me. Returning only after I began a self-inflicted regime I call ‘book of the week’ and stubbornness to not let this passion dwindle to embers and die. Conceivably it is also the reason why I keep reverting back to my tattered copies of Fahrenheit 451 and The Book Thief, perhaps masochistically, where I shed real tears upon my debut readings at the thought of burning books.
To this day I read many books of all sorts; published and un-published alike. Most recently I have been expanding beyond fiction and novella into guide books and other ‘business’ or otherwise orientated ‘help’ books. For example, ‘The Barefoot Investor’. As a result, this is right up my alley.
I don’t particularly enjoy reading off a laptop. I’d much prefer the ambiance of paper and a cup of tea (the Tumblr aesthetic is beginning to take hold) but I have to, at least for now. Maybe I’ll order a copy as I already know this will be inextricably connected to this subjects learning.
Initially I snort, scrolling via my mousepad. “This page has been left intentionally blank”. Right. Thank you for letting me know. Four times over. But anyway, onto my notes for Chapter One:
Tumblr media
To start with, I particularly enjoy the analogy of gardens as societal systems, and the illustrations. I’ve not thought of economy like that before, but then again this is my inauguration to economics either way.
One sentence that stood out to me immediately connected back to this course in saying;
“[our ‘friends’ who work in Biology or Chemistry] understand that knowledge advances through keeping a record of steps and missteps that occur in the course of their experiments. As we experiment with taking back the economy, we should make an effort to record our journey.”
I do not like to profligate knowledge. And so this has inspired me to be meticulous with the journalling in this subject. I felt that I did an above average job of book-keeping for our Lab 1 course last semester, but one can always improve, and always learn.
I’m not the finest at money, so I googled the Phillips Machine to gain a deeper insight: The first video I watched wasn’t all the clear to me, leading me onto the following MONIAC Demonstration which turned out to be much clearer.
As I continue to read this it constantly reminds me of Beautiful Questioning from semester one in that the book refers to reframing perspectives - how our economy is not exclusively maintained by mega-corps and economic experts, and that we - a little garden, can ‘take back the economy’ by our own means. Through what I have just learnt about the Uniform Project and the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Change to our economy through society and social disruptions are happening now. I salute those women.
Furthermore, the recap of how slavery’s abolishment began by reframing the perspective of these men and women as people instead of non-sentient creatures reminds me of how, less than 100 years ago women had just won the right to vote.
How in 1967 when Kathrine Switzer raced in the Boston Marathon it was believed that the safest distance a woman could run was 2 miles.
How just 40 years ago people of non-heterosexual orientations were dying unaided from AIDs, and still are.
How in 2001, Germany was the first country to legalise gay “life partnerships” and adoption, bought on by social rebellion to overarching and (I continue to believe were and could still be) archaic systems.
‘Taking back’ the economy and regulating it to prosper for all does not seem that far-fetched. And I am so excited, and wholly optimistic for this course.
Tumblr media
To conclude, I have ordered a physical copy to be here by the time class starts.
IT-B out *peace sign*

#RunningWilde Ch. 44 | Cherry Bomb
Can you roll down a window?
I just wanna feel the wind blow in my face
Cause these moments come one blink at a time
That's why I never wanna close my eyes
I can feel the riot in the air tonight
Kinda trouble you can taste
-The Thrill
Miguel
Ava had been walking for thirty minutes, sticking to the shadows with her cap pulled low, her shoulders hunched and her arms hugging her unusually thin frame, in an effort to keep the cool night air from slipping into her jacket. This was but a small sample of what the harshness of the world, broke and on her own, had to offer. She gritted her teeth against the bite of the wind. To be a survivor she had to steel herself against discomfort, after all, in the grand scheme of escaping her conflicted captor, and now her god father’s men, this was nothing.
The gun resting against her hip reminded her of that.
For the umpteenth time on her great escape, she wondered if he was okay. If the Syndicate men had caught up to him. If they’d been successful…
She shook the thought away. Entertaining the possibility that Aiden had lost (annoyingly) made her feel a little lost. He was awful and she hated him (she reminded herself), but Aiden was the last person she knew had her back no matter what. He couldn’t die. In this new world of guns and grey areas, lost was the last thing she wanted to feel.
She had to be brave.
She was heading back in the direction of the hotel. With all the guest travelling through there, she figured it would make it much easier to hitch a ride…though maybe the amount of opportunity had probably dwindled since she and Aiden (mostly Aiden) had left a pile of bodies and traumatised people behind. She’d make sure not to get too close. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for another run in with the police just yet.
She’d thought about turning herself in. It was the simplest option, but with no idea what would happen if she went into custody, the thought unsettled her. It didn’t matter that she was just as much a victim in this as anyone else. She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong…aside from taser a man…but that was in a (futile) attempt to save him. She’d also unwillingly been an accessory to several murders. On top of that, she was the daughter of a crime lord -there was no way in hell they’d listen to her.
Aiden and her father had fucked her life up royally.
She eventually came across a rest stop a few miles from the hotel and politely asked to use the bathroom, throwing in that she was on her period for good measure. The male cashier handed her the keys and shooed her away.
Under the starkness of florescent lights, in fingerprint smeared mirror, Ava took a good look at herself. She frowned as she touched her face. It was thinner, her features sharper, her skin blemished and dark circles made her eyes look haunted. Her hands moved to her cap. She tugged it off and cringed when she saw the dull, almost matted state of her hair. If her mother could see her now she’d smack her in her head with a comb like she used to do when Ava was a child, refusing to sit still and kicking up a fuss as her mother tried to style her hair. She undid her two cornrows, tearing her finger tips through the knots that had developed on top of them, then splashed her hair with water till the curls were more a little more manageable and defined. She attempted to finger comb them, but after two weeks of neglect, it was quite reluctant to cooperate.
She splashed her face with cold water, pinched her cheeks to make them rosier, unzipped her coat and tied a knot in the back of her top to make it more form fitting.
It wasn’t the greatest transformation, but until she had better resources, this would have to do.
*
Back on the M1, forcing herself to mentally block out the breeze, with only the thin material of her tightened top to combat it, Ava walked tall with her chest high, nipples as hard as cherry seeds, and her thumb stuck out. She knew the risks that came with hitchhiking, especially as a young woman alone, but she had a gun (that she hoped that she wouldn’t have to use).
Cars zoomed by her for miles but eventually a Volkswagen pulled over.
“You okay there, love?” a middle-aged man frowned at her.
“Um, hi! Hello, sir,” She crouched a little to get a better look at him and gave an awkward wave. What was hitchhiker etiquette anyway? “Thank you so much for stopping. I really need a lift.”
“What on earth are ya doing all the way out ‘ere?”
She inched closer tentatively and gave her best woe is me expression, “My boyfriend and I got into a huge fight and he ditched me. I’ve been walking for miles.”
“Well now,” his northern accent became more pronounced making him sound warm and sympathetic, like one of those telemarketers that you didn’t immediately hang up on, “That’s not right at all. It’s not safe out ‘ere, especially for a woman…” he put his hands up immediately, “I don’t mean any offence by that.” He pushed up his rectangular wire frame glasses, avoiding her eyes, “I know you are all capable of taking care of ya’selves without men, as me daughters like ta remind me,” he chuckled.
He was a father.
“Anyway,” he scratched the wispy salt and pepper hair around the inner edge of his bald patch, “Where ya headed, love?”
“London.”
“Oh,” he frowned, “Well, I’m going as far as Nottingham, if that helps.”
What other choice did she have? It wasn’t like it mattered anyway. “It helps.”
“Okay, well get in,” he smiled. He shifted a pile of papers, wrappers and cold takeaway from the passenger seat and Ava got in. The heat inside the car was welcomed.
“I s’pose I should introduce me’self. I’m Roy,” his eyes cloudy blue eyes crinkled around the edges and he stuck out his hand. His wedding band glinted in the dashboard lights.
He was a father and a husband.
“A..ven,” she quickly cleared her throat and shook his hand, “Heaven.”
“Nice ta meet ya, Heaven.”
They pulled off down the M1. Her plan was in action.
Ava locked her fingers and twiddled her thumbs but the contact made her palms grow clammier faster. She pressed them against her thighs. “Roy,” she said meekly, “I was wondering if it would be all right if I used your phone to call my parents? All my stuff is in my boyfriend’s car. I wanna let them know I’m okay.”
“Oh sure, sure.” He reached into his coat pocket and produced an outdated smartphone, unlocked the screen and handed it to her. Two small, bright faces beamed up at her from his home screen.
Her face softened, “Aww,” she cooed like you were supposed to when you saw pictures of people’s children, “Are these your daughters?”
“Oh no, I’m too old for that. Those are me grandkids,” he smiled fondly at the little faces. “That’s Joanna and Kaitlyn.”
A father, a husband and a grandfather. She felt three times as terrible as she had when he’d pulled over and turned out not to be a creep. He hadn’t even stared at her pert breasts once.
“They’re adorable.” It was the first honest thing she’d said since getting in his car.
“Don’t let their angelic face fool you,” he chuckled, “They’re little devils, especially Kait.” His smile was far too wide for her to believe that that was what he really thought. He clearly adored them.
Why couldn’t he have been some lecherous sleaze ball? It would have made things a whole lot easier.
Her palms were full on sweaty, to the point that even when she tried to wipe the moisture away on her jeans, a fresh layer replaced it immediately, and an uncomfortable knot was growing and twisting in her stomach. Roy was a good man who had people who loved him waiting on him back home, and unfortunately, he’d been the only one nice enough to come to her rescue.
Damn.
She fake-dialled a number and pressed his phone to her ear. After waiting the appropriate amount of time, she spoke. “Hi Dad…” Her throat grew tight and heat flared up behind her eyes. This conversation wasn’t real and it would never be real again, even if she wanted it to. “I’m…I’m okay,” her voice cracked. Roy frowned at her. She took a deep breath. She had to keep it together, just until this was over. “I’m on my way to Nottingham and I don’t have my phone. …Yeah, but we got in a fight and he ditched me. I know, I know,” she rolled her eyes, imagining how her father would launch into a lecture. She used to hate when he did that. He’d go on and on, getting progressively louder as he made his point, and go off on all sorts of tangents that only vaguely related to the situation. She never thought she’d miss that. She nodded, pretending that that was exactly what he was doing, and in the back of her head it was almost as if she could really hear him telling her how bad Aiden was for her. “I should have listened to you. I’m sorry…” she blinked back the tears that had begun to gather along her waterline. She cleared her throat firmly; keep it together Ava. You just have to get through this. Don’t mess it up now. “Can you come get me, please? …The train station?” She looked at Roy for confirmation and he pursed his lips with a gentle, relieved smile, and nodded. “That’s perfect…Okay. …I love you too.”
She fake hung up and turned Roy’s phone face down in her lap, avoiding Joanna and Kaitlyn’s beaming faces. They were driving past vast fields of darkness now with no other cars surrounding them. She couldn’t waste this opportunity.
“He’s going ta meet ya at the station?”
She sighed. “No.”
“What? Well why the ‘ell not? You’re his kid!” he gripped the steering wheel and his pale face reddened, “That ain’t right!”
Ava pocketed his phone, pulled out the gun and put it to his temple. Her face hardened, “Because my dad is dead.”

Vegas Valley Sunset
TIA International Photography posted a photo:
Although I visited Las Vegas earlier this summer, the image I am sharing is from my first visit several years ago. I'm sure many of you have the experience of going back through older photos and wondering, "What was I thinking when I took this?" However, there are also times when you go back through the inventory and wonder, "How did I miss this one?" This photo falls into the latter inquiry. This scene features the skyline of the Las Vegas Strip on the evening of Independence Day, about an hour before the city's fireworks program began. I remember being entranced by the sheer illumination of the city leading to the skyline of the gargantuan hotels and resorts, many of which are among the world's largest in size. I found it all to be rather charming and quizzical simultaneously -- such a large city built in the dry and arid desert, where there's actually plenty of life alongside the endless entertainment, glitz, glamour, and campiness for which Vegas is renowned. #VegasStrong Please click here to view my updated portfolio of Las Vegas.
