Subtext and Culture, Young Royals, Season 3, Episode 3

Episode 3 picks up the day after the camping trip, and Wilhelm calls his mom to check on her. She dumps a massive guilt trip on him, maybe unintentionally, and Wilhelm is feeling a little bit down.

Culture: These are Swedish studentmössor. They originated in the 1800's among Nordic university students and they wore them as a common marker. Later, they were adopted as graduation caps for high school students, signifying that they were now allowed to begin studying at a university.

Culture: Valborg, April 30th, is a traditional Swedish holiday where you celebrate the coming of spring with bonfires. It is also the start of graduation season for high school students, and graduates are allowed to start wearing their caps.

Cinematography: This season they started writing most on-screen social media commentary in English, despite those users being pretty obviously Swedish. I suspect it's because it saves them having to subtitle all of them, it makes it a bit easier for all the viewers to follow along.

Subtext: No, keeping up appearances is more important than mental health for the royal family, which is why this is new behaviour that Wilhelm has never seen before.

Subtext: As a reminder of the increased interest, here's a paparazzi intruding on school grounds. Also, where the hell is Malin? Isn't it her job to shoo away photographers?

Culture: Vintern Rasat is a classic Swedish song celebrating spring that's often performed by student singers at Valborg.

Subtext: Boris cleverly offers August individual therapy, something he sorely needs.

Subtext: It's of course a bit ironic that pretty much the entire fandom hates August and has decided that he can't be forgiven or redeemed. Yes, you, dear reader. But Boris lays out a way for August to start his redemption arc. Will it work? Tune in for next week's episode!

Culture: These usernames reek of white supremacy. Norse mythology references are very popular, and 88 means H*il H*tler, so that's the kind of people we're dealing with. The show is also foreshadowing what's gonna happen at the end of the episode.

Blink and you miss it: Linda made Pabellón, a Venezuelan dish. In season 1 we didn't know where Linda was from, but in season 2 she was canonically made as being from Venezuela, just like Omar is in real life.

Subtext: I think August actually cares, Kristina is family to him too, but Wilhelm refuses to treat him as family, so he lies about how she's doing. Not very convincingly, though.

Cinematography: This is an absolutely hilarious shot with a bunch of students anxiously peering out through the windows as the dreaded enemy arrives: Skolinspektionen! Dun-dun-dun!

Blink and you miss it: There's a rainbow flag on the board to the left.

Subtext: Vanessa totally knew she interrupted a makeout session between our boys. Oh, and there's a lot of purple in these two scenes, colour theory exploded with joy.

Subtext: Simon will be proven wrong, someone will be honest.

Subtext: It's also ironic that Simon joins the rest of the Forest Ridge boys pretending to have a great meal together that is totally not stiff and awkward at all, absolutely not.

Lost in translation: Simon Walter says that May 1st is a "röd dag" - a red day, which is how Sundays and public holidays are usually marked in a Swedish calendar. "Bank holiday" is the term used in the UK for public holidays. There are 13 public holidays in Sweden each year.

Culture: Första Maj is the name of the International Workers' Day in Sweden, because it always occurs on May 1st. In defence of Henry and Walter's shared braincell, most Swedes actually don't participate, but it's a bit weird to not even know what it is.

Subtext: This entire sequence shows how Felice's dad tried to stick up for himself, but quickly learned to keep his head down instead and conform and roll with it. And it wasn't just the other students who were racists, the staff was in on it too. This goes for all the shit the students are doing, the partying, the booze, the alcohol, the bullying: The staff is in on it. They know. They're complicit.

And despite all of this, Poppe's immediate answer when asked how his time at Hillerska was, is that it was the best time of his life. This is why schools like this stay the way they are, why they never change, because they're very good and very bad at the same time. Trauma-bonding works, the kids will all get friends for life, they'll forget the shit and remember the good times. They'll become like him.

But when Felice learns what the school did to her dad, she decides to help shut it down, to stop the cycle of abuse. The reason she goes in alone is because she now knows she can't trust her dad, he's gonna defend the school, and she also doesn't want him to know that she snitched.

Subtext: In official surveys, students from schools like this generally rate them very highly. Student satisfaction is very high. Maybe they're lying, maybe they're delusional, but they sure care more about their schools than public school students.

Blink and you miss it: REAL SUBTLE THERE, SHOW.

Subtext: Keeping with the school theme, this is how students defend the shit that goes on. Outsiders are kept in the dark, you don't tell them anything, because they "wouldn't understand", they're missing the "full context", etc. Oh, I don't know shit about fashion, but Fredrika's jacket smells very expensive.

Blink and you miss it: While Wilhelm pinned a polaroid of himself and Simon prominently on his wall, August keeps a similar polaroid of himself and Sara hidden.

Subtext: Micke's redemption arc is in full swing, so why not play a song that reinforces the idea that people can change?

Subtext: August's redemption arc is in full swing, so let's cut to him nervously waiting outside Micke's place for Sara to come home, while the same song is playing. Is he gonna be a villain forever?

Blink and you miss it: Micke introduces himself as Micke af Eriksson when August introduces himself as August Horn af Årnäs. The English subtitles for some weird reason went with "Micke Eriksson of Bjärstad", but that's actually not what he says.

Subtext: Sara is pretty realistic about her expectations of her dad because she's seen this before, but this also applies to her expectations of August, because she knows that he can also slide back into his normal shitty self. Also, she's wearing a purple sweater.

Subtext: In case you forgot, August's dad also struggled with addiction, and died from it, so he and Sara actually has that in common. Maybe there's hope for this redemption arc thing?

Cinematography: I don't fucking know why they included this baking scene. It serves no purpose, and I suspect quite a few people in the production have a serious hand fetish, because what is this? What is this? Also, why are Simon and Wilhelm joining what appears to be a Manor House thing with the rest of the girls? How? Why? This makes no sense! It's very cute, though!

Subtext: Oh ok, we got a social media pic that Sara could see and feel bad for her lost friendships. But man, those Hillerska aprons! On point!

Subtext: This is unfortunately a very common thing for people on any kind of psychoactive medication. How can you tell if you need medication if you feel good right now? Is it lasting or temporary? Can you trust your own brain? Either way, fantastic conversation between Micke and Sara, which starts her on her journey to reconcile with Felice at least.

🎵 I can change, I'm not the same, not forever. 🎵

Culture: The official hat-on-putting ceremony where all the third-year students put on their hats, set to another traditional Swedish spring celebration song: Vårvindar Friska.

Culture: It's Valborg, so Hillerska has their own little bonfire. We saw some students with torches pretending to light it, but it's actually floating in the middle of the fountain so, uh, how did they do that? Normally, your local bonfire or Majbrasa is just a huge heap of wood that you set on fire.

Cinematography: Man, this is a pretty show. Look at that shot. The fire, the sunset, the pool reflection. The end of April is over a month after the spring equinox, so the days are getting longer, and the sun now sets at about half past nine in the evenings.

Subtext: Ok, let's do one more on-the-nose lyrics thing for when August sees Sara back at school. Yes, yes, he needs her.

Culture: I had to post about it immediately after watching the episode, because setting a sex scene to Uti Vår Hage is hilarious. Everyone in Sweden knows it, most people have sung it at school, it's a cute little song about enjoying your garden, flowers, and giving your loved one a wreath of flowers. I can now never hear this song without thinking about this scene. Thanks a lot, show.

Blink and you miss it: Simon fucks Wilhelm. Yay! Versatile supremacy!

Subtext: Sara is still so suspicious of her dad's behaviour, she can't make herself trust that his current good period will last.

Subtext: Even though this dialogue is about how Simon and Sara are so different, it of course also applies to how Wilhelm and Erik were different, because Wilhelm struggles with not being able to handle his duty the same way Erik could.

Culture: Alright, it's time for the actual local Första Maj event in Bjärstad. The town is probably a bit small to have a proper demonstration parade, but there's people with banners and socialist slogans, and a bunch of local organisations have joined in, including Bjärstad BK, the football club Rosh plays in.

Culture: Meanwhile, the absolutely not socialist rich kids at Hillerska are nursing their hangovers and enjoying the day off, and they're doing some yoga and playing some padel instead. As you do.

Subtext: Drugs. He looks like he's selling drugs.

Culture: These apparently confused a bunch of viewers, but they're just raffle tickets. It's one hundred numbered, rolled up, paper tickets stuck on a metal ring. When you buy a ticket you just tear it off at the perforation, and when all tickets are sold you can just break the seal on the ring and pour all the stubs in a bag or whatever so you can draw winners.

Blink and you miss it: Cute kiddo has a pride pin on his jacket.

Lost in translation: The show waited a bit with showing what it says on the banner behind them in the photo, but if you can read Swedish you immediately saw that it says KROSSA ÖVERKLASSEN - CRUSH THE UPPER CLASSES. Oh no, Simon, what have you done?

Blink and you miss it: Like a pack of rabid wolves, the social-media starved Gen Z kids rush to their phones for an hour of glorious feeding on Instagram and TikTok.

Blink and you miss it: I love Vincent so much, he's terrible, but he's just so much fun! The little fist he makes as he says "kampen" just seals it.

Subtext: The show still hasn't revealed the banner text to the non-Swedish audience, but Wilhelm immediately sees it and knows how bad it is and why Farima tried calling him seven times. Also, Vincent is just on a roll here.

Cinematography: Man, this is a pretty show. Look at that shot. Look at how they perfectly aligned the hole in the window with Simon, the police car, and the entrance to their house, as he discovers that someone decided to vandalize it.

OK, I seriously can't believe someone actually thinks this about season 4 of Never Have I Ever:

"In 2023, the message of the show suddenly turned into *"racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and class inequity doesn't exist anymore. Devi did a Bollywood dance, got into Princeton, and a racist white guy said he loves her at the last minute, so everything is going to be okay (for Gen Z)."*

This is the opposite of the premise that the show started with in 2020, which acknowledged the brutal unfairness in the world."

Firstly, it wasn't a Bollywood dance. They danced to the Tamil dubbed version of a song that is originally Telugu. Tamil cinema is known as Kollywood, and Telugu cinema is known as Tollywood. Maybe people who comment so much on racism should learn a little more about not clubbing all of Indian culture together. As a Telugu woman who lives in Tamil Nadu, I'd like to say that I was really happy with the dance number. I was especially happy because it wasn't a Bollywood dance (season 1 just used Hindi songs, and that really annoyed me because Devi is Tamil).

The show literally acknowledged that Devi ("our little hothead from the valley") was happy in that moment. There was no claim about everything being okay forever. It's just that she is better equipped to deal with problems now. She will continue to grow non-linearly, just like she did throughout the show.

Of course, the show became less about dealing with intense grief as it went on - time heals. But they did portray that grief still lingers, despite that.

Also, the portrayal of familial relationships was great - Devi talking about how it's cool to live with three generations of women in her house, Nalini having to deal with empty nest syndrome, Nalini talking about her own struggle with having to start over in the US after being a top resident in India (but of course, the last season does not acknowledge how brutally unfair the world is /s) and how she was just trying to protect Devi from being devastated, Devi setting her mother up (showing how much she had healed and grown since season 2), Kamala being too attached to her family to move away and Nalini telling her that change is good (and even Kamala's coping mechanism of becoming overprotective of Nirmala), Kamala and Devi's sweet moments, the family's acceptance and joyous celebration of Nirmala finding love again, Nirmala calling Nalini out for being mean to Devi, and of course, the heartwarming scene of Nalini helping Devi pack and telling her she's proud of her. Devi's final monologue focused primarily on how much she cares about her mother. Did all of that mean nothing to some people?

Never Have I Ever is not an unproblematic show. But I still can't believe it's being reduced to this. I. Seriously. Just. Can't. Devi was so much more comfortable in her skin than when the show started, and was no longer obsessed with external validation. Her relationship with Nalini had improved greatly. She embraced her culture so much more. She was okay with not getting into Princeton, and realised that she'd always be connected to her father no matter what. I don't mind that she didn't completely give up on her Princeton dream. I don't think she needed to, to show that she had healed. She was able to tell her dad's story in a way that felt true to herself, and did not feel exploitative (she reclaimed her power from a racist white guy). She was truly happy when she prayed to the gods before leaving to Princeton. She was surrounded by people who cared about her and loved her, as she said. And she was happily in the middle of a fun game of Never Have I Ever before Ben showed up. She had learned to love herself and her life. The show having a happy (for now) ending does not equal them saying that everything is going to be okay forever. The world is still brutally unfair. Devi is just a little better at dealing with it.

I don't know who needs to hear this but Never Have I Ever had a TEAM DEVI ending! Just because Devi was not single at the end of the show/ended up with someone you dislike, it doesn't mean that the ending wasn't a win for team Devi.

TEAM DEVI FOR THE WIN! AND THAT'S WHAT WE GOT.

I'll acknowledge that there were issues with the show throughout all four seasons. But I can't see such an empowering show being dismissed in such a ridiculous way.

also, the Main Theme from Bramble: The Mountain King. i just got done playing it with my brother, it's an amazing exploration of folklore, horror, and storytelling, and the music is incredible. i'm a simple void - you incorporate a hurdy gurdy, you have my heart.

4. Last film: i'm cheating a little because i rarely watch movies and noting the one we're going to be watching tonight: Last Holiday. it's my favorite holiday movie and has such a warm wish fulfillment vibe. also i get to see nathan ford, my beloathed, get clowned on.

5. Currently reading: i just finished a multi-count re-read of The Half-Life of Element Zero by GraphiteGirl. it's one of my favorite da:i fics, a really well-thought-out crossover with mass effect, and the main character is incredibly complex and appreciable. if you have been avoiding reading it because it is unfinished, i really encourage you to try it out anyway.

6. Currently watching: i don't have the time/desire really to watch tv shows on my own, but my friends and i are slowly working through all the seasons of leverage.

Just watched Hazbin Hotel for the first time and having sooo many feels

Adore the characters they created. Also after my prior hyperfixations of Yuri!!! on Ice and Heartstopper, this show feels SHOCKINGLY mature lmfaoooo. Like did y'all just say CUNT 20 times??? ?? ???

Adore the cast, the drawing/designs, pretty much everything. The aesthetic at first reminded me of Spinel singing "Other Friends" from Steven Universe (I think bc Alastor is so radio coded)

I cried a lot with the redemption arcs, the ideas of good/bad, and I think because of some Christian trauma I had. I found myself ENRAGED by Adam and realized it's related to Xtian trauma and male supremacy in the religion I was raised in, even in the 12 step groups I'm a part of now/meetings I go to that are more male dominant. There's so many ppl would be like "of COURSE Adam is in heaven" even tho he was sadistic, cruel, calls women bitches, etc etc - and never be questioned for his behavior- while others are expected to go to hell and nobody questioned it. The entire idea of angels/those in heaven not knowing WHY they are there was very powerful

Ahhh thank you so much for the tag @sadeyedlady-writes!! I'm going to have so much fun doing this <3

1. Three non-romantic duos: OOO I cannot choose! For one, it has to be Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers, they're so sweet with each other, and their friendship is one I can only dream of having. The trust they have is beautiful and I think that special sort of brotherly love they have is very precious.

For the second one it is Sara Howard and John Moore. I love their dynamic, and although I haven't finished watching the second season of The Alienist, I am already in love with them being together. They get into trouble together, and complain about Lazlo together, they're a very fun pair and I adore them so much!

The third one is Sherlock Holmes and John Watson but from the Russian adaptation from the 70s specifically. They're so kind and good with each other, and they're both so funny. I love this adaptation so much, and I think it is the best television portrayal of the characters. They're so lovely, and they truly care for each other.

2. A ship that might surprise others: Honestly, Maria Hill and Steve Rogers. I don't know why, something about it is just perfect, and I love it, and they are so good together, and I want to see them interact more.

3. Last song: Мальчик мой by Chernikovskaya Hata

4. Last Film: Sharper (2023) I will admit, I started watching it because Sebastian Stan was in it, but I quite enjoyed the premise, and it was overall a pretty fun heist film!

5. Currently reading: The Bourne Supremacy by Robert Ludlum. It's a very difficult read, and the English is really hard, even harder than classics, but it's super good, and I was craving a good old thriller, and this one scratches that itch perfectly. I am also reading The North Water by Ian McGuire, and it's so on the edge of your seat suspenseful, and somewhat graphic, but it's so so so well written, and the atmosphere simply seeps through the pages like nothing else.

6. Currently watching: The Alienist. It's such a well written show, and I love the costumes, and it's all so historically accurate so far. I love the dynamics between the characters, and I love love love psychiatric history which this show has so much of in it, and of course, it has some incredible actors as well!

7. Currently consuming: A caramel and chocolate icecream sandwich and it's so so good.

8. Currently craving: Oh, I want sushi so badly. Some good laks (or lox) as well!

✿ Being able to actually sit down and write. Been stuck in a writing rut for a while and was finally able to write this week, so :). 

✿ Listening to music always, especially when I’m able to relax while doing it, but it does help me focus too, so... 

✿ Concerts on that note! Nothing like ‘em. Five My Chem shows to look forward to this fall and I’m so psyched, SO psyched. And, I can’t wait to see everyone too finally.

✿ So, I hate the summer, but I believe in summer fruits (like the food, not the people) supremacy. Currently eating strawberries while attempting to write this list actually. So good and delish. 

✿ Going to Whole Foods brings me joy, specifically their vegan cupcakes. Always daydreaming about Whole Foods vegan cupcakes actually. Nothing else I’d rather spend $18 on. And, on that note, oatmilk my most beloved (but only Oatly)... I have a problem. :) 

✿ Sports? Sports! Specifically hockey and football. The NHL season just ended (Congrats to the Avs!) and I miss it already. And, I’m always missing Her (the NFL season) when she’s away... 

✿ A good fucking fic update! One of my faves just updated today and I read it as soon as I got home from work. Nothing like it! 

✿ New episodes of my favorite show! (This is specifically about Stranger Things Vol. 2 coming out in two days, but shh...) 

✿ Also, on that note, blorbos from my shows and putting them in Scenarios and also thinking up songs about Them. They know who they are. 

✿ The gay little people in my phone who I get to talk to on here! You know who you are and I love talking to you and especially feel joy when YOU talk about something you’re excited about to me. I love that so much.

Its been over a month that Heartstopper released, and every time I think the fandom is slowing down, a new interview pops up, following which a new info about the cast pops up following which you get the greatest news that can be there for a show  which is not 1 but a 2 season renewal. 

All hail Alice Oseman for this series!!!! Netflix too for not (in a polite manner) fucking it up.

I have a lot of thoughts, which were put on hold due to the normal life because one needs to do all that to have simple pleasures in life. Over the month there hasn’t been a day I haven’t read about Heartstopper. When I first saw the teaser it promised itself to be a cute story in a very rom-com setting. The trailer came and my interest was piqued. Netflix dropped all its episodes on 22nd April and binging it was the only way to do it. It took me roughly 4-5hrs and in lack of better words I wasn’t the same. 

The show is Perfect. I don’t think any words suits it. It’s perfect who already recognize themselves, it’s perfect for those you are discovering and learning about themselves, it’s perfect for those who need to check their action and behavior, it’s perfect those who don’t know how to approach this side. 

Let’s start with basics shall we,

Storyline - Alice Oseman giving us what we didn’t know we ever needed. Although the graphic novel came back in 2016, which has a following itself, the show was decided to be adapted in 2019 and today in 2022 we finally have this beautiful piece in front of us.

Casting - A1, I don’t think you could have found anyone better for their roles if you searched with a candle anywhere. It’s like God was so impressed with this graphic novel that he made sure we have freaking re-incarnations of these characters. Kit, Joe, Yasmin, William, Sebastian, Corinna, Cormac, Izzy, Rhea and Tobie all were downright commendable. Hat’s off to you guys because no one could have done it better, especially when for so many of them it’s their first acting credit. Sebastian Croft and Cormac, you both easily bring out something in me that should not be named which goes to show how much I hate Ben and Harry, an unhealthy amount easily though. Please seek therapy. 

Cinematography - Probably one of the best I have seen. Especially the Tara Darcy Kiss, because that scene is supremacy. It embodies everything good about being in love because that’s what it is all about isn’t it, to find someone you love even if it’s yourself. 

Emotions - I have laughed, cried, sobbed, smiled, got angry and every other emotion that could possible existed has been felt during this watch. Also the other 4 times of re-watching. It’s always the same which is saying something. They were not overboard or fake, but natural and I think it resonated not just with me but everyone who watched it given the success it has risen to and continues to do so. 

Music - By god, I have never heard a better playlist than Heartstopper, it was like every track was custom made for all the different situations that were happening. The songs embodied the situations perfectly because even without saying you can understand a lot just lyrics. 

A lot of us regardless of age have been able to relate with different experiences that have been portrayed in the series. A lot of us have had nostalgia, something to reminisce and relive those ugly, harsh and even traumatic memories because the world and this society has not always been kind to those who don’t fit in their mold and idea of a person should be. 

This series was treat to watch and highlighted so many things from the smallest things that matter to the biggest of conversations that needs to talked about. I’m  thoroughly grateful for Netflix for renewing this show and I just hope the integrity, the soul and the charm this show had in season 1 is carried well into the other 2 seasons. 

Can’t wait to see these people grow and succeed. The best is yet to come.

Look I cannot pretend I haven’t been thinking about Ed/Stede for almost an entire year non-stop at this point.  C’mon now.  (Hard to say where they slot in my list of all time favs since they’re pretty fresh, but since we’re on this blog they’re getting top billing.)

Mulder/Scully.  The OGs, the trendsetters, the absolute 90s legends, what more can I say?

I guess the other major one in my life is Beatrice/Benedick.  Despite the amount of Macbeth in my current OFMD fic, Much Ado is my actual favourite play, and lbr despite my last bullet point these two are the real OGs, trendsetters and (15)90s legends.

This list was fairly heterosexual so honorable mention to Aziraphale/Crowley (the book versions, though I thank Mr Sheen and Tennant for their services).

first ever ship: Speaking of Mr Tennant, Doctor/Rose gets to go here (though of course this includes Nine and not just Ten).  I believe in RTDWho supremacy.

last song: My phone’s been on shuffle while making food so I’m halfway through Legends Never Die by Orville Peck ft. Shania Twain, which is one of his weaker songs imo despite the iconic collab.  But the last song I actively selected was Happiness by The 1975 because their new album fucks and I feel 17 again.

last film: Finally watched Everything Everywhere All at Once the other day so now I’ve seen like 2 films in preparation for Oscar season... I intend to watch more but don’t bet on it.

currently reading: Nothing currently - the last book I read was Slaughterhouse 5 (following my beloved Catch-22 reread: if you’re following my Mash blog you’ll have been bombarded with the ramifications of that for months now).  Sadly I didn’t really enjoy it though :/ Next up might be Jurassic Park since I found a second hand copy at a book stall, and that’s sitting on my bedside table, but whether I’ll actually get around to it any time soon is anyone’s guess.

currently watching: I watched the first episode of The Last of Us but haven’t seen the second yet, if that counts.  Also rewatching OFMD as it airs on BBC2, and it’s my favourite episode tonight so that’s fun!

currently consuming: Re: the above point, Kristian’s Instagram Lives have become something I look forward to every week.  Also been listening to The National’s new single a lot!

currently craving: Well I was craving pasta but then I had some so I’m all good now :’)

crash landing on you - ♾ / 10 (highly recommended, i swear you won't regret watching it, especially if you like the trope where the ml fells first and falls harder)

the uncanny counter - 10/10 (if you like something thay involves powers or supernatural with action, then this is what you might be looking for)

business proposal - 11/10 (a romcom series, an adaptation of it's manhwa series, characters are very relatable, employee and ceo relationship trope with a pinch of fake dating)

love alarm - season 1 is 99.9/10 while season 2 is 5/ 10 (ngl, i prefer s1 better than s2, and as much as i would like to spoil why, i believe you should watch it on your own to find out. if you like angst so much, then here it is)

sweet home - 100/10 (this is a thriller and suspense series, every episode hits that impact, just a heads up that s2 is also on the way, so you won't have to be annoyed at the ending of s1!)

start-up - 1000/10 (another romcom series, however this is has something to do with starting a business? i forgot the plot, but then again it's actually a good kdrama to watch, let me know if you've already fallen for the second male lead of the series 😉)

school 2015 - ♾/10 (OH TO WATCH THIS SERIES LIKE IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME TO DO SO, i highly recommend this as well, the plot is very 🤌, the second male lead deserves so much, I REPEAT HE DESERVES SO MUCH BETTER LIKE WHY DID THEY DO HIM LIKE THAT 😔)

school 2013 - 8/10 (not too bad but not too good as well, higschool romcom series!)

20th century girl - ♾/10 (THIS MOVIE, ISTG THIS MOVIE COMES SECOND BEFORE TITANIC FOR HURTING ME SO BAD, a he fell first but she fell harder trope, i suggest you prepare a couple of tissues...but overall, a really great movie! it would somehow make you realize that time is short and so can be love, so yeah let the people around you know how much you love them)

it's okay to not be okay - ♾/10 (i highly recommend this as well, there are some scenes where it can be emotional or confusing, but trust me it's really good, i'd say that it's about two people who are broken yet are also trying to love each other 🙁)

probably bruce (he's very pretty as a girl and i'm obsessed with the "bruce girl renaissance" that happened at the beginning of season 4 where he played at least one female role in every episode for a long stretch. also obsessed with tammy)

tho also in the spirit of me accidentally writing essay-length ramblings about scott thompson maybe i should write an essay about my observation that most of scott's female characters have this "arrogant yet supportive" quality to them where they're very self assured but also hype up the character they're with in almost every scene. like just thinking about how cathy looks out for kathie, or maudre looks out for jocelyn, or hell even the unnamed female characters in the mouth congress song "two hot girls." idk if it's a conscious writing thing (i was going to ask paul bellini about this when i interviewed him but i forgot lmao) but idk i just find it very sweet. also my mom's favorite kids in the hall character is fran (she's quoted the salty ham sketch all the time since i was a little kid) so yeah. my answer is bruce girl supremacy but scott girls are special too

🛼Opinions on the revival season?

I loved it!!! Of course, there are a few things that annoyed me but tbh judging from interviews all of those things were either caused by the pandemic (they wanted to bring back the live audience but couldn't with covid restrictions, if they get a season 7 they're adding back in live sketches) or amazon's censorship. so yeah the circumstances surrounding it certainly prevented it from being the best it could have been but all things considered i'm so happy it exists and the kids have honestly only gotten funnier with age. combined with comedy punks, this whole kids in the hall revival is what actually finally motivated me to dive into kids in the hall last summer (combined with the fact that i didn't have anything better to do lmao) so i'm very happy it exists

specific opinions:

opinion on the opening: i loved it, the brain candy commentary was great and i loved that they dug them back out of the grave from the finale. also hi bellini!

opinions on the dicks: not the funniest sketch but also i didn't hate it/wasn't grossed out by the nudity. it was okay.

opinions on the new buddy cole: this is a dangerous thing to ask me lmao do you want me to write a whole essay on this man for the fourth time???? but long story short i cried when he got his bar back and i truly hope we see more of him soon

opinions on the zoom call sketch: i thought it was a very funny premise and very well executed but holy shit that was the most awkward thing i've ever watched with my parents in the room

favorite new sketches: imaginary girlfriend, inside a kevin mcdonald sketch, doomsday dj (of course)

favorite recurring character sketches: fran and gordon (i laughed so fucking hard every single time i watched it i love them so much), also ngl scott was absolutely beautiful as francesca fiore

thing that annoyed me most: i never liked the "friends of kids in the hall" segments. it always felt way too SNL which is not what i come to kids in the hall for. some of the cameos were cool, but i deserve to be on that segment more than pete davidson (hashtag get magentagalaxies on kids in the hall revival season 2!! i mean come on i'm already a "friend of bellini" /hj)

not just netflix dramas, even disney dramas are announced they'll be seasonal before even airing ://////// it's a plague of sequels…. then there're those from the usual networks which were split for two season for some very unknown reasons instead of filming the whole thing and air it all at once… i'm looking at you TVN💀💀!!! i think i gave up of ever getting that Signal season 2 we were promised……………. it's been years and there's no news or even a slim hope in the sight so…… also i'm bitter that they're giving me the arthdal sequel with a re-cast of the two mains, how do i cope with that…. it wont be the same 😭💔….

Urgh...why must they follow western seasonal format I am soo madd like give us all at once plssss. Idk if covid impacted their decisions to do more seasonal format due to time but like I'd rather wait and have a full ONE season then waiting for season 2 /cries/. hehehe my bad I must have missed it but yayyy MLN and LW supremacy!! I think it happens to most gifmakers, we watch the show and our brain automatically picks up scenes we want to gif 🤣. So i'm mostly inspired by relatable scenes or great dialogues. The creativity part comes and goes, it would never flow until I start working on it, prompts are also very helpful like for events. I always have my spotify playing at the background or multitasking between watching shows on tv and giffing but I also do it in complete silence lmao

this show is so gd entertaining. I think I finished this season in 2 days? it was great! super fun scenes and special moments between characters. Robert Sheehan and Ritu Arya are perfect for their roles - Ritu especially is so charismatic and I hope to see her in more projects! 

Street Woman Fighter

I'm not sure why I didn’t watch the episodes as they came out last year, but I’m so mad I didn’t! these ladies slay and I'm so happy that dancers have been getting more recognition through this show. I want Monica to be my mom and Lip J to be my auntie. everyone in this show is so COOL I can’t even describe how awestruck I am with them all. Aiki - give me one chance PLEASE

I've tried to watch this show a few times - with my sister, by myself, but for some reason or another did not continue watching it. I restarted it again because my lovely friend loves it and recommended I watch it - so I did :) it’s super cute and also has me missing my volleyball days >:(

Stranger Things (season 4)

Small things in The Witcher Season 2

-1-The signs, they’re beautiful and just so well done and I’m so very excited to see more of them

-3&8-Yennefer actually letting herself rely on people, how she will physically lean against those she trusts and let them help her

-Tissaia and Vesemir being parents of the most chaotic children on the entire continent while also going through their own shit (they do bad things this season, I was yelling at them both for most of the show)

-2-Lambert.  How he is first introduced by the nickname ‘Lambchop’.  How he is 100% the asshole uncle that bullies and pushes Ciri to be her best while also having her side and being willing to admit that he fucked up (yes he only does that to Triss but he is more eager to apologize than any other Witcher we see and we can assume he does the same with Ciri)

-Triss.  Just Triss.  She’s stunning and so kind and soft while also being tough as nails and as strong as obsidian.  She is woman and proud of it while also taking no shit and doing what needs to be done.  Racists can kindly fuck off. (side note, Ciri’s side-eye to both Geralt and Triss when they meet up again?? Absolutely fucking hilarious)

-THE FACT THAT THEY USED THE SAME ACTOR TWICE FOR WITCHER THINGS BECAUSE HIS ROLE AS DECLAN WAS JUST A VOICE ONE. Graham McTavish as Declan and Dijkstra supremacy

-4-I have to be honest, I was not expecting to ship an Enemies-To-Lovers Cahir and Yennefer at ALL no matter how brief that ship idea may have lasted.

-3&4-The way that Yennefer lit up whenever she saw of heard the people she loves and trusts, her grin when she saw Tissaia again (and Tissaia’s answering sob that had me in tears), and the way she absolutely beams when she hears Jaskier’s voice.

-4&7-Burn, Butcher, Burn and Whoreson Prison Blues are absolute fucking bops and I love how they are basically just what would happen if you took The Amazing Devil, Bardic versions of songs, and a singer going through a Taylor Swift/Olivia Rodrigo era and smashed them all together.  The only way they could make it better is if Madeleine Hyland was singing right alongside him.

-4-I firmly believe that to most people, Jaskier’s Toss A Coin and other works about Geralt overwrote the Butcher of Blaviken moniker that he previously had in people’s minds so now when he calls him ‘Butcher’ they don’t even think of that anymore and it is only painful to Geralt.

-I am quite literally just a Yennefer and Jaskier (also a Yennskier) simp, that’s all

-I LOVE THE STUPID FUCKING BARD OKAY

-I hope they bring in other Witcher schools, I just need Aiden, I just need my stupid fucking Cat okay??

-The mannerisms and blocking of each of the characters is genius and you can tell so much thought went into it with each of the characters and their motivations and history.

-7-Jaskier and Geralt’s reunion.  Tears just instant tears and Jaskier tearing him a new one is perfection. “Don’t fucking ‘Jaskier’ me, I’m talking to you, this is how this works.” and “I need you”

-5-Yennefer and Jaskier pretending to be married is peak humour and i need them to keep jokingly referencing it for the rest of time to confuse the hell out of Geralt.

-All their outfits are actually stunning???? I wish i had the skill to make them

-8-I should not be attracted to the Witchers and their black eyes but HERE WE GO I GUESS

We’ve all been spreading Hermitcraft propaganda in the form of gushing about the hermits’ builds and their styles, but now I really would like a list of “little things the hermits do that made you think a lot”. Like hermits aren’t just fantastic creators, they’re also genuinely nice and wonderful people.

I’ll start off with two— Hermitcraft’s Golden Boi and Golden Girl. Grian and FalseSymmetry.

Grian: there was a time in 2020 when he was super stressed and busy, probably because of his wedding/ engagement and other irl matters. He mentioned that in his videos, but he still tried his best to get his Hermitcraft episodes out on schedule. But in the midst of this, he commissioned Rendog’s brother Jono to write a song called Work, which was basically a song about Grian working and all the tasks he had to do, like mining, paying the bills, caving. It sounds happy and upbeat, but it also has lyrics like:

The lyrics sounds sad, since it literally says “I’m so tired I wanna die” and “I’m sacrificing my social life for work”, which probably reflects what Grian felt when he commissioned Jono.

Grian was very busy and tired. But instead of wallowing in his negative emotions, he tried to be positive and productive by having a cheerful song for him to listen to while working. He even recorded a whole MV of him working probably because he thought it was fun, which could help him overcome burnout.

So Grian

1) had a positive attitude

2) took steps to maintain that positive attitude

3) supported a small talented creator

4) supported his close friend’s brother

5) did all of the above despite being tired and stressed out

False: We know her as False Supremacy and a builder, but False is actually very dedicated to her community and Hermitcraft. The main island in Hermitcraft Season 6 was divided into districts like the fantasy district, medieval district, modern district etc. But as time went on, most hermits were too distracted to focus on the districts, leaving behind a pile of builds with distinctive styles in their respective districts.

So when HC6 ended, while basically everyone else was packing up and finishing up their builds, it was False who quietly connected the districts together by mimicking the building styles of her friends, going so far as to say she didn’t want other hermits’ builds to feel lonely. It was False who loyally stayed behind, filling up the forgotten districts, doing her best to fulfill the vision the hermits had at the beginning.

False is also a frequent contributor to the hermits’ nether hub, but since the hermits use the nether hub for transportation (which is boring), they don’t really talk about the builds in the nether. Yet, she takes the time to make it look pretty and complete, while being humble and never asking for recognition.

Well this went on longer than I anticipated, I hope more hermits can be added to the list <3
