OK, I seriously can't believe someone actually thinks this about season 4 of Never Have I Ever:
"In 2023, the message of the show suddenly turned into *"racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and class inequity doesn't exist anymore. Devi did a Bollywood dance, got into Princeton, and a racist white guy said he loves her at the last minute, so everything is going to be okay (for Gen Z)."*
This is the opposite of the premise that the show started with in 2020, which acknowledged the brutal unfairness in the world."
Firstly, it wasn't a Bollywood dance. They danced to the Tamil dubbed version of a song that is originally Telugu. Tamil cinema is known as Kollywood, and Telugu cinema is known as Tollywood. Maybe people who comment so much on racism should learn a little more about not clubbing all of Indian culture together. As a Telugu woman who lives in Tamil Nadu, I'd like to say that I was really happy with the dance number. I was especially happy because it wasn't a Bollywood dance (season 1 just used Hindi songs, and that really annoyed me because Devi is Tamil).
The show literally acknowledged that Devi ("our little hothead from the valley") was happy in that moment. There was no claim about everything being okay forever. It's just that she is better equipped to deal with problems now. She will continue to grow non-linearly, just like she did throughout the show.
Of course, the show became less about dealing with intense grief as it went on - time heals. But they did portray that grief still lingers, despite that.
Also, the portrayal of familial relationships was great - Devi talking about how it's cool to live with three generations of women in her house, Nalini having to deal with empty nest syndrome, Nalini talking about her own struggle with having to start over in the US after being a top resident in India (but of course, the last season does not acknowledge how brutally unfair the world is /s) and how she was just trying to protect Devi from being devastated, Devi setting her mother up (showing how much she had healed and grown since season 2), Kamala being too attached to her family to move away and Nalini telling her that change is good (and even Kamala's coping mechanism of becoming overprotective of Nirmala), Kamala and Devi's sweet moments, the family's acceptance and joyous celebration of Nirmala finding love again, Nirmala calling Nalini out for being mean to Devi, and of course, the heartwarming scene of Nalini helping Devi pack and telling her she's proud of her. Devi's final monologue focused primarily on how much she cares about her mother. Did all of that mean nothing to some people?
Never Have I Ever is not an unproblematic show. But I still can't believe it's being reduced to this. I. Seriously. Just. Can't. Devi was so much more comfortable in her skin than when the show started, and was no longer obsessed with external validation. Her relationship with Nalini had improved greatly. She embraced her culture so much more. She was okay with not getting into Princeton, and realised that she'd always be connected to her father no matter what. I don't mind that she didn't completely give up on her Princeton dream. I don't think she needed to, to show that she had healed. She was able to tell her dad's story in a way that felt true to herself, and did not feel exploitative (she reclaimed her power from a racist white guy). She was truly happy when she prayed to the gods before leaving to Princeton. She was surrounded by people who cared about her and loved her, as she said. And she was happily in the middle of a fun game of Never Have I Ever before Ben showed up. She had learned to love herself and her life. The show having a happy (for now) ending does not equal them saying that everything is going to be okay forever. The world is still brutally unfair. Devi is just a little better at dealing with it.
I don't know who needs to hear this but Never Have I Ever had a TEAM DEVI ending! Just because Devi was not single at the end of the show/ended up with someone you dislike, it doesn't mean that the ending wasn't a win for team Devi.
TEAM DEVI FOR THE WIN! AND THAT'S WHAT WE GOT.
I'll acknowledge that there were issues with the show throughout all four seasons. But I can't see such an empowering show being dismissed in such a ridiculous way.

my favorite thing about never have I ever is that it's not about a love triangle at all.
the whole show is about grief, loss and loneliness. the emptiness left by the death of a loved one. the trauma that watch someone who's your whole world die before your eyes. the fact that your pain is not only yours, it's shared with your mother and your cousin and his mother and everyone is drinking from the same fountain of endless despair, everyone copes in their own ways but the pain is so paradoxically individual and collective that your coping affects other's lives too.
she never really loved paxton, but dreamed of him to distract herself from the pain she felt when mohan passed and because the show starts with him already gone, we never know who devi was before that happened, we just know that she was not that "unhinged". she loves her friends but they suddenly does not understand her even though eleanor never sees her mother who actively chose leave her behind. she loves ben but howard is never there and his mother is always away and he's so lonely that she doesn't see him as a dreamy fit because it's her mirror, he lonely as she is and she can't deal with that.
she choose to make all the sort of bad decisions and deal with it consequences later just to during one moment in a party a coyote appears and she thinks it's her father a boy plays with her dad tennis racket her new boyfriend watch her play in the orchestra and she sees her father in the audience but he's not there and her mother is grieving too without never know how to deal with her and now she's so in pain and everyone says she's too much for them her pain is too much a inconvenience her sorrow is too messy and they leave they leave they leave she's alone she's too much she's replaceable shes embarrassing she's jealous she craves love that she once had and now it's not there and she's empty looking for anything to fill the void that he left
but you laugh at her bad decisions and root for her all along the way we want her to feel something other than the pain she deals with
and then, someday, she's not so mad anymore. she's okay with her mother finding love. she's breaking up bad relationships and supporting her friends even tho it hurts her. she's not harming herself just to feel something, she's not rejecting her mirror in form a lover, she's not so confused or empty. she survived. honestly, how beautiful is that?

Never Have I Ever Season 4: My Extensive Opinions on all the plots
I will go through various plots and characters (in no particular order) and give my opinion
Margot
I don’t like Margot. Her introduction this season was her being furious at Devi because she was mad that Ben ghosted her but Devi literally has a right to mad. Margot’s reaction was very unwarranted and a lot for the situation at hand, especially because she wasn’t giving Ben any of that energy she was giving Devi. She isn’t wondering why Ben ghosted Devi out of the blue? She isn’t thinking that this could be a potential red flag? She is still protecting him and doting on him?
This isn’t even the only time this happens. Every time Margot is on screen, they have to get her mad at Devi for some reason, which is usually a misunderstanding. Sometimes she is justified, for example when she finds Devi’s notebook and when Devi almost gets her suspended. But why was she mad at Devi when Ben brought the flowers to her house? Why did she not give the same energy to Ben? He was the one that brought the flowers. Then she admits that she is embarrassed of Ben after she spent 6 episodes fighting over him? Girl, what was the fighting even for??
It just makes me mad that her character got so much screen time and the conflict that she has with Devi is so repetitive. I just think about how her screentime could be given to other characters (cough, cough Aneesa) and that makes me even more mad.
Episode 1
Should be called “Never Have I Ever Risked it all for a man” This is not a criticism to the writing of the episode, this is more of a message to characters that don’t exist. Devi, Margot, stand up, please. No man is worth fighting for, no man is worth ruining your reputation for and no man is worth ruining your chances of getting into your dream university for and I’m saying that as someone who loves Ben as a character (for the most part).
Ben x Margot
Was very unnecessary. Ben stop dating girls to get over Devi challenge I beg of you.
Ethan
Also unnecessary but at least he got Devi to take her mind off of Ben.
Fabneesa
They had so much chemistry in their interactions together and they were trying to tell us last season that they don’t have any romantic chemistry?? Nah, sorry I don’t believe it. During the scene where Fabiola confided in Addison about her fight with Devi and Addison told her that she would make new friends in college, I was thinking about how Aneesa would get it since she is in the same friend group (tho props to Addison for listening to Fab and getting it in the end.)
Aneesa
I adore Aneesa so I was disappointed that she was barely in the season. I wish we could’ve gotten more information about where got recruited to.
Nalini
I adore her and I love how much she has grown. In seasons 1 and 2, she would have called Devi ‘stupid’ or used other harsh words without a second thought. Now she corrects her mistakes and is more gentle and comforting to Devi. I also really like Nalini’s relationship with Margot’s dad, they had chemistry.
Nirmala
Funny as always.
Kamala
I am glad that she took that job in Baltimore and I am so glad that she didn’t get married. I feel like a big part of her character is that she isn’t ready to get married and needs to figure out the timing of things in her own terms. I am also very happy that she is still with Mr Kulkarni.
Paxton
I was worried when he dropped out of university but the writers handled the plotline so well. The first thing they did was drill it into our heads that Paxton made the wrong choice and that he was running away from change. I adored his friendship with Devi and I really liked his relationship with Miss Thompson. I really like Miss Thompson’s personality and I like how she isn’t phased by his charm and holds him accountable for his actions. They are also bi4bi, I don’t make the rules.
Fabiola
Fabiola was right in applying to Princeton because she can apply anywhere she wants but wrong in not telling Devi at all. I definitely felt bad for her because you can tell that she adores Devi and would never want to hurt her. Luckily, it all worked out in the end.
Ben
He really needed someone to slap him in the first few episodes because what the hell was he thinking?? First, ghosting Devi after they slept together, dating Margot, refusing to speak to her and lying about it being Margot’s decision. I was ready to fight him. Luckily, he redeemed himself in the last few episodes.
Devi
I am a Devi stan first, person second, have always been from season 1. I am so proud of how much she’s grown and of how far she’s come. Most of all, I am so glad that she got her dream college, her dream boyfriend and started embracing her culture.
Benvi
The moments in the last few episodes were perfection. Ben defending Devi from the creep? Amazing. Them interacting with each other and everyone knowing that they’re in love? Spectacular. Them gazing at each other with heart eyes at graduation when you know season 1 Ben would have been so mad that Devi won valedictorian over him. The scene where he flies all the way from New York to confess his love for her and they run away holding hands and the scenes after that? The most romantic scenes on the show. Benvi is definitely one of the best slowburns in recent television.

Here we are 1 day till we see the final season of Never Have I Ever. I'm excited but also so sad that it's ending. I know it's going to be a rough weekend!
It's an amazing show that has brought to the forefront diversity in our society. Numerous cultures and ethnicities are represented in various settings. At the same time making us laugh and think about so much.
NHIE came out when our world was thrown in such uncertainty with COVID. It gave us time to focus on something other than the virus. It made me laugh and smile.
Family and friends are important and crucial especially during those hard times. We learn and rely on each other just like the characters on the show.
I can also say I have made many friends here on Tumblr. We love and support each other and our stan DAXTON. We are open to each other's questions, observations, rants, raves and overall love for this show.
They are even supportive when it comes to writing my first fanfiction. And I have a feeling that we are going to need more DAXTON fics to get it through it all. Yes I promise to finish it for my besties!
Thank you to @infinite-wanders @blunderbussmatterhorn @laurenkoenig07 @astraybrat @justmissg @deviipaaxton143 @a-lockman5 @seeyoumondaydevi @scorpio-smiles @tashas-life and @cupcakesandtv (the Queen of DAXTON FANFICS) for all your love and support through the past 3 years! Wish I had found you guys sooner when Season 1 came out. 😜🤪😉

Season 3 of NHIE is the best season of the entire series.
Season 3 was a sort of healing journey for me: it made me fall in love with NHIE again.
Everything that happened just felt... right.
It made me laugh and cry and I felt like the first time I watched season 1.
Every single character had his/her own development, nothing felt forced or bad just like happened in season 2.
Season 3 gave me a sort of interior peace and I'm also very glad that I'm out from the fandom's discourse because in this way I've had the opportunity to genuinely enjoy this season.
The fact that I had zero expectations for this was amazing because I watched every episode with absolutely no anxiety (season 2 was bad to me also for this reason).
I say it again: season 3 of Never Have I Ever is 100 score (at least to me). Officially my favourite season of the entire series.
I love all the characters, all of them: everyone of them is precious. And I'm excited to see them again next year.
Mindy, you got me again girl! (good for you)
Lots of love (especially for my favourite main female protagonist Devi Vishwakumar)

So! I went to the screening of the first two episodes yesterday (and got a "Plowed by Paxton" shirt signed by Richa (Kamala) and Poorna (Nalini) because they were the guests at the screening.
Most people have been talking about Devi, Ben, or Paxton, which makes sense. But I am here to give spoilers about Nirmala, Nalini, and Kamala.
As we know from the script, Nirmala is deeply disappointed with Kamala, who tried to make it up to Prashant, but it ended up not working. Nirmala is still upset, Nalini tried to mend their relationship.
This dynamic continues for the start of the second episode.
Nirmala points out that Nalini has no friends and is lonely, Nalini says she has friends but Nirmala debunks that. Nalini convinces Nirmala to forgive Kamala, but Nirmala does so with a catch. Throwing a party for Kamala to find a new fiancé. Nirmala also ends up inviting a nutritionist for Nalini to make friends with. Nalini judges her at first for saying she doesn't consider herself as part of the medical field.
Earlier, Manish (Mr. K) asks Devi in a not so subtle way about what Kamala is up to, Devi told him about the party. He shows up, Kamala is happy to see him, and Nirmala notices they have a connection. Nirmala begins to ask many questions about his profession, his family, and his culture. He says all the wrong things, as he's high school teacher, his parents are divorced and have "unimpressive" careers, he has no connection to his grandparents because they are back in India, and does not understand "any Indian language."
Learning all this about Manish, Nirmala begins to (at least look like) have a heart attack, Nalini wants to call an ambulance, but the nutritionist uses something she made and Nirmala feels better. Nalini thanks her, and they seem to have formed a connection.
Manish asks out Kamala, she agrees. Kamala later tells Nirmala of this news, but Nirmala quickly tells her not him, and expresses her disappoint for him and his lack of connection to traditions.
Bonus: Poorna says that Nalini goes on an arc to have more friendships. Richa said Kamala will discover romance. Poorna is team Paxton, or team Des. Richa is team Ben.

one very niche thing i want happening on s3: nalini, nirmala, kamala and maybe even devi insulting people in front of them in tamil. because i feel like it's such a bilingual thing?? like i'm definitely going to do it if i live abroad. and the people are just like "oh what a beautiful language" when they're being called a greasy old person who looks like he needs a shower.

Never Have I Ever opinion I finished the series but I’m meh about Devi’s ending tbh. I really wanted Devi to end up with Paxton or be single. Ben always bugged me. Other than that as a Indian woman this show and the storylines has made me so happy! 🙂 seeing actors and actresses who look like me just made me smile. Also her grandmother’s storyline this season was the cutest!!!
