More horses!

It's only fair that Marilyn also gets a horse. Everyone should have a horse! Still slowly making my way through everything @esta-elavaris has written, but this should be the last one for her OCs (until there's more 👀)

A Chestnut Anglo-arabian mare. Hear me out: equine therapy. Marilyn must have heard about it, and maybe at one point she finds a nice looking stable offering day-rides, and maybe she wants to get some fresh air and it’s not that far from her flat and— Anyway, she loved it, she also found that her knee didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would. She found herself wanting to go back, loving the warm and calm energy of the horses and their soft noses.

One of her acquaintances noticed her interest and offered to give her informal lessons with her own horse, a retired show-jumping mare. Her friend tried explaining that mares have a reputation for being hormonal and difficult to work with, and that Chestnut horses tended to be more chaos-prone than others.

Hormonal, she could understand, especially if they were surrounded by idiot young stallions when she had been a multiple time national winner. The colour? She was reserving judgment on that one.

When she met Brimstone, she was taken aback by her fiery coat and temperament. Her friend showed her how to brush the mare, and Marilyn hesitated only a little before finding the activity incredibly meditative. As she learned to pick the hoof, she felt a little nip on her butt, and let out a yelp before standing back. She was shocked to see the argument between her friend and the mare, never before thinking there could be such a thing. Although her friend insisted on finishing, Marilyn persevered and managed to not get bitten anymore even as Brimstone kept a upset face.

Over time, she found herself offering to help her friend care for Brimstone, and slowly learning how to ride. She wasn’t planning on starting competitions, but she did like the idea of being able to canter in the forest and jump over fallen trees with her friend by her side. Plus it kept her in shape. She learned that Brimstone was possibly the most inquisitive horse in the stable, always wanting to understand new things, like new boots or new gloves (which she threw across the hall. To test their durability of course). She also didn’t bolt at things, unlike the other horses, she stood her ground and investigated. Marilyn grew to love that mare, and understood exactly why her friend loved her horse.

Eventually, her friend mentioned that she was looking for a new horse with which to enter competitions, but the cost of both horses were just a little over her budget. They decided to split the boarding for Brimstone, so Marilyn would have a leisure horse.

So this got away from me a little, but I was motivated. It didn't come as easily as the others, since the concept didn't lend itself that well, but like Marilyn, I persevered!

I will be doing more of these when inspiration strikes, worry not, though I will -eventually- start on adding horses to many universes.

Chapter One

“Okay girls, turn over your papers now.”

The whole hall fills with the sound of rustling paper as sixty of us flip over English Paper One in tandem. I take a deep, shuddering breath and read the first question. 

SECTION 1. TEXT 1. This text is taken from An Irishwoman’s Diary by journalist, Lara Marlowe. She was Irish Times correspondent in Beirut and Paris, and is now based in Washington. Here she responds to an article critical of cats written by her friend and fellow journalist, Rosita Boland.

I read the article. Then I read the questions. Then I read them again. From my seat at the back of the hall I glance up the aisles of students, most of them already writing something. I hold my pen over the blank, lined page in front of me, my hand trembling slightly as I write down Question 1. Then I hesitate, I try really hard not to panic and then I read all the questions one more time. 

Claire, who is one aisle over and three desks from the front, turns around slowly, knowing she’s not allowed to look at anybody else but does anyway, checking first that the examiner isn’t watching her. Her eyes widen to saucers and she shakes her head at me in disbelief. “What the hell is this?” She mouths, and I shrug. We’ve already talked about this. Neither of us is going to do well in our Leaving Cert, it’s not just speculation. It’s fact, and I’ve never been more convinced of it now as I sit in this hot room, day one, paper one, question one, and I can’t even think of how to begin. 

It had all seemed a lot funnier a few weeks ago when we agreed upon how ill prepared we were. Claire has never done well academically, in fact I’m almost sure she’s got undiagnosed dyslexia, even though her proud-as-punch parents refused to have her assessed even after the guidance counsellor practically begged them to. Meanwhile I spent the whole year in the art room working on my portfolio instead of joining the after school study group, mostly because Kelly was doing it, but also because I haven’t been in the headspace. It’s been a strange year. Now though, on this bright June morning with a three and a half hour exam ahead of us, nothing seems that funny anymore and the choices I’ve made throughout the year seem to be nipping at my heels. The terror in Claire’s eyes illustrates exactly how I feel. I’m not sure how we’re going to get through nine more of these truly harrowing papers, but I know that I have to try. I put my head down and start writing something – anything at all. 

When we finally spill out of the hall that afternoon I feel like my body is made from rubber. Claire and I console one another outside the doors, arms around one another in defeat. 

“That was awful.” She complains. “I’ve failed.”

“You haven’t failed. Nobody fails English.”

“I’ll be one of the few that does.”

I let her go and start digging around the bottom of my bag for my keys. “Let’s go to Starbucks. We’ll get chai lattes and try to make ourselves feel better.”

Right then Kelly comes sweeping out of the hall, her new best friend Cristina at her side. She’s one of those mousy brunettes who wears her school bag straps tightened all the way, and has a particular fondness for horses. I’ve seen her show jumping at the agricultural fairs before, and I’m convinced she’s the one behind the fan page on Facebook that’s been set up for herself and her horse Barney. It’s just a stream of photographs of her on the horse with weird captions like Cris and Barney looking fab! I distinctly remember Kelly complaining about how strange she was before, but now here they are, joined at the hip, and I know purely because she needs to have someone in her corner. It doesn’t even matter if she likes her or not. 

“That was so easy.” Kelly says loudly. “I thought they’d at least make paper one a bit of a challenge, but it was a breeze. I’ve never felt more confident” She’s trying very hard not to look at either Claire or me, thinking she’s being sly, but Claire gives my ribs a little nudge with her elbow and I know that we’re going to be laughing about this over coffee in about ten minutes. Kelly thinks these types of statements are devastating to our psyche, but when we’re together she holds no power over us anymore, even if sometimes when I’m alone I remember the fun we used to have. She wasn’t always awful, she wasn’t always mean, and there’s times that I feel sad for what’s been ruined, but I’d never ever admit those things out loud. 

Claire and I leave the school building and climb into my car. I can drive now. I passed my driving test in April, much to her delight, because now that Shane is away at college she needs someone to transport her wherever she wants to go. My car isn’t very good, actually, it’s my dad’s car, and it’s from 1995. The shine has worn off the paint so that it’s this weird, matte, chalky texture, so it’s not good looking, but it’s better than nothing at all in a town that doesn’t even have public buses. We spend so much time in this car, just driving around and talking and eating McFlurries. We used to talk about boys a lot. She’d tell me all about Shane and what he was doing and how she felt about it, about how weird it was to be away from him and to not ever really know what he was doing up there in UCD.

“Studying science.” I’d always tell her jokingly. 

“Yes, but what else? Did you see all the hot girls they had in the prospectus?”

“And he isn’t looking at any of them. If he was, he’d be some fool.”

“He’d be a dead man.”

“Any messing from him and we’ll drive through campus and plough him down.”

“I love how you always have my back.”

She listened to me talk about boys for a while too, but it was really only ever one boy. It was fun while it lasted, going into depth about all these tiny details like the way the muscles in his arms moved when he changed gears in his car, the curve of his nose bridge from his side view, the exact places where he put his hands and the way he turned his head when he kissed me, but after a while she began to get bored of hearing it. 

“You know, there are other fellas out there.” She started saying. “The world is filled with hipster-y arty type boys, you just have to go out and look for them.”

“I don’t want other boys.” I’d said. “I want him.” And I did. I still do, even though we don’t talk to each other anymore. Sometimes, late at night when my head is swirling and I can’t sleep I’ll open up our old email thread from last autumn and read through every message until I reach the last one. It’s from me, sent on the 6th of November, and it says: Happy birthday! I hope you’re going to do something fun today. Do you think your new friends will get you a cake, or maybe take you to a bar? It would be great, and I wish I could be there to celebrate with you. I’m glad that your project is coming along well, it sounds so difficult to me. I don’t know how you do it, and in German too! Das ist klasse!!! I better try to learn a few words for when I get to visit you. All the best, E. 

He never responded, and it feels like my message is still hanging somewhere in the ether, just waiting to be acknowledged, for him to remember that it’s there, to pluck it out and finally type out his response, but I know now that he won’t. Too much time has gone by, and too much has happened. Still, there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that I haven’t thought about him, looked at a picture of him, googled his name.

i did my post about merch and this is a general price guide to go along with that, but because it's so subject to change, i have reblogs turned off and will probably delete this after a bit when it's no longer relevant/correct. these prices are not based on original price but rather what you can expect to pay for it now if you actually want to get your hands on it.

this is a lot more informal and just based off what I've seen over the last 2-3 months of digging. lower-end average (not the best, but generally good enough) prices are listed in USD (since all of this was originally sold in the US, its pretty hard to get a hold of elsewhere).

note: the biggest tip i can give you is to look on Mercari. there's a lot fewer professional collectors/speculators ("investors" 🙄) over there, but also fewer listings in general. that said, definitely check other places before buying something, and Mercari doesn't have search alert emails like eBay. also, take a peek at Facebook Marketplace! I have seen one or two things there if you look "outside your area" with shipping.

original posters: (in mint condition) close to 10$ but sometimes pushing 20$. reproductions fall in this range too tbh.

pins vary based on what the pin is and if it still has its backing. most pins are still available direct too so i haven't paid much attention to their prices. I think like 10$ (give or take a few dollars) for the buttons (4-pack) is around what I've found. side note: double check any pins being sold against han cholo's catalogue and my con promos post, because if it's not in there it's a fan's design, which 1) you really should buy direct from them, 2) might be CHEAPER from them. i saw someone selling pins for 30$ when brand new from the fan artist they're 24$. same thing for the jewelry. there's a reseller who is my nemesis for marking up items and trying to make them seem rarer by calling them con exclusive when theyre for sale online right now. i cannot stress enough how much you should cross-check this stuff.

her universe clothes: this varies based on what it is, but in general you should be looking to get it for less than original list price. even if it's barely used, it is still used, and you will find it lower than original eventually, so use that as your general guide. for the jackets, you can get as good as 40$ off sometimes (I’ve seen the adora bomber that retailed at 70$ listed between 25-75$). the bomber is definitely the most common item i've seen, usually around 25$, but i haven't checked the situation over on poshmark/thredup so there might be more variety there. (also, i have the links to all the original clothing listings in my merch post, which includes the original sizing chart!)

action figures: they list for 800+, but listed doesn't equal sold at all. i havent seen any movement on the listings i've found (which span up into four figures, btw). i think i saw them sold for 450$ once. sometimes people list just the BOX for 150$ so good fucking luck if you want this one and make sure to read the listing carefully. also, if you want to look around for these, add "-keshi" (on sites that support it) to remove the super7 keshis from the search, which are these weird 7$ rubber things for the OG show that remind me of the straw buddies.

can you tell the difference between the items that collectors have targeted and the regular merch? lmao. speaking of collecting: NIB = new in box. basically, it's in the same condition as if you bought it directly from the store. sometimes you might see NIP for "new in package" (think the buttons, which obviously don't have a box).

dolls: okay, listen. i've seen adora sell for 90$ and i've also seen her sit around and wait to be sold for 40$. every single one of these can go for three figures at times, but i would say an average list price (they're super over-priced, so you can make lower offers after a while of no movement, i've seen 100$ come off listings as time went on) is around 70-100$ (NIB) and a good one is closer to 40-50$. she-ra (regular) tends to be cheapest and easiest to get below this price point. the lowest ive seen NIB for them individually is 30$ each for glimbow, 39$ for adora, 25$ for she-ra, 45$ for she-ra+swift wind, and 57$ for catra (note: catra is the most expensive and rare to find below three figures. she sometimes goes for over 200$). i've also seen the entire BFS go as a 50$ lot NIB and the BFS + catra go as a lot for 30$ out of box so factor that how you will. these prices range a Lot. if you wait and are patient, you can get a more reasonable price eventually. (there's currently a lot of she-ra/glimmer/bow listed as 300$ despite she-ra being way more common and regularly going for $50. people are stupid) OH RIGHT i forgot the sdcc exclusive. yeah 100$ list is average on that. best price ive seen (initially listed) recently is 80$ NIB. that said, i've seen them sell as low as 31$ when the packaging was damaged. because prices are so variable, i've seen damaged out-of-boxes go for more than NIBs (see: 115$ damaged catra vs 57$ NIB) because the seller/buyer were pricing based off of a higher listing. if someone is trying to sell something damaged or with a slightly off screening (imperfect paint/print job), you can lean on that to get the price lower (there's a glimmer with a Hilariously skewed screening - and missing accessories + messy hair - listed for 1$ on ebay right now).

the Lootcrate and Sonic stuff varies based on what it is (and if it's in a lot) but they tend to span 5-20$. usually they aren't sold individually so it's hard to price.

the stickers/tattoo/coloring sheets usually go in lots but range 2-15$

the target toy sword/shield and target costume should be something like 30-45$ for a good NIB price (i've seen them go up to 75$ as a list price tho). i've seen the costume go for as low as 10$ if it's used.

i havent seen enough listings (or any in some cases) to get a vibe on the prices for anything else.

these prices are just based on what's going down right now. they'll go up around the holidays and then lower again, and it's possible in a year they're all way higher or way lower than currently. collectors have targeted some of these things and its so obvious when the con exclusive pin sets can sell for 12$ and the (originally 15$!) dolls from target can go for 160$. it's super annoying and i hope all of them choke <3 but maybe their stupid speculating will taper off and it will get easier to get stuff reasonably. we can only hope

Change the Channel

Blocking the budding of viruses – when they wrap themselves in the host cell membrane and move off to spread the infection – could be a good strategy to stop them in their tracks. Researchers interested in alphaviruses – a type that includes chikungunya and Sindbis viruses – examined the role of a protein called 6K in virus assembly and spreading. They found that it functions as a channel to let molecules pass through membranes, like has been seen in proteins of HIV and influenza. This ion channel activity was needed for the formation of vacuoles in the cell, which promote the transport of proteins to the cell lining where they are incorporated into new virus particles (these proteins in red spread throughout the membrane, left, compared to clumping in the absence of 6K, right). Interfering with 6K action could be a new way to treat infection, and nip budding in the bud.

I saw a post today that I didn't want to like..yuh know fuckin hijack cause I saw an artist talk about it. but I wanted to talk about it cause I've had folks unintentionally do stuff in my favor that I didn't appreciate. I've spoken about it on my facebook but not here. I notice this happens way too much and I beg you do not confront me that someone is copying my style... I have been around since the 2000's online. I have had many claim my art, topics, and style inspire them... yes pple will nip from me cause I inspire them and I'm okay with that. As long as no one is being racist towards me and my work I don't care. I'm happy I can inspire others in such a manner..do not go under their art going "this looks like tainted sweet meats art"..its rude af and personally if I see you do it I won't tolerate that and most likely comment on that post congratulating the artist’s work and make you look like a fool ( I’m very petty on that front).I also teach folks paid art classes privately online and the ones I teach under my wings as an apprentice will have styles like mine... THIS IS ON PURPOSE... so cut it tf out... On said post I understood where the artist was coming from about just being used as an inspo resource rather than treated as an artist. An it took me so long to realize what folks were doing when inspired by me cause I was so used to getting white folks be super racist with my my art and extremely fetishy race wise with me in the art community that I couldn't tell the difference if this was like genuine inspo or like are you poppin your rocks off at the fact that a lot of my art is asian/black coded. If that yuh know *spice* was something you can sell off me type thing as yuh brand. Cause I've had it happen where folks copy my work and even one creepy artist stalked me for years ripping my ocs to resell them as “urban adopts” and mentally I didn’t see that as inspo an was like damn just hard R me and get it over with at that point. It was kinda wild.( dont worry tho that artist was quickly called out by black twitter for some racist stuff they drew..like making a black vamp oc getting hung...woo boi...that was...that was something. hoooooooweeeever, I did notice it triggered others in the past when I spoke about it to target folks who just genuinely loved me and my work and that made me feel a bit protective over folks who just enjoyed my work and I inspired them to draw.  I think in my older age I can tell the difference very quickly and don't mind folks getting inspired by my work as long as racism and fetish aint the reason cause at that point I wouldn't see that as art inspo just plain overall disrespect to me as a person. Wanted to say a thing cause damn I felt that post and understood it. but this is just for me tho and my experience... every artist is different.

I used to work with a friend who is a influencer and youtuber. They asked me to do the thumbnails since they love my art and I've been struggeling with money for a while.

It was a nice extra income.

Until they found AI and that they can just push a button and get free art immidiately.

So I got turned down silently. No official "hey I took something else" nothing. They just started using AI and stopped updating my art schedule. I had an argument with them about it and stated the issue with AI. They kinda don't care. They only see their own profit.

Mind you, this person is super leftist. I expected more from them especially because they complain a lot how other youtubers steal and copy their videos.

Also note: I did a very fair price, I even underpaid myself.

And now I have to see how I'll make through the next few months.

So yeah, AI doesn't only steal art, it steals jobs especially from small artists. I want this shit to fucking end already

First of all, I'm so so SO sorry this happened to you. I really hope that you still continue to stay creative, share your artwork and wishing you loads of business to keep up your art career. Situations like this are awfully discouraging, but I implore you to keep at it. We need real, human artists more than ever. Never stop creating friend.

Personally, I feel like the use of AI "artwork" typically made by so-called leftists or liberals outs that their solidarity is just performative. Whether they realize it or not, I feel as if you're competent enough to realize capitalism is not good for anyone (unless you're swimming in a billion dollars) that you'd come to the understanding AI "art" hurts the working class - because, lets be honest, if you're selling you're artwork/making art to sell, you're working. You're a worker. And it's just even more so baffling when other ARTISTS are making AI art "for shits and giggles" all while acknowledging that the production of AI artwork hurts artists. The cognitive dissonance is real - or or or - their activism is just performative. lol.

I won't support artists who use AI "art" and post it even if it's "just for fun". I don't care if you "just wanted to see" yourself in Greg Rutkowski's style or (the other artist's style, I cannot for the life of me remember their name) and share it on social media. One of my acquaintances on Facebook makes and sells jewelry and is supposedly an avid leftist, and another acquaintance of mine also does commissions and sells their artwork also via Facebook; yet recently posted AI self portraits and my respect for both of them quickly got flushed down the shitter.

Really, and I say this with every micrometer of my fuckn soul, feeding the generator and sharing your AI "artwork" is completely and disgustingly insulting for any competent artist (and I say competent, because this phase has proven some are in fact, not). For those who've posted and shared their AI "art", fuck you for even having the thought and ESPECIALLY a hot and steamy massive fuck you if you've ever acknowledged in the past the destruction of AI-generated artwork. Get shit on.

How to stop this? Stop feeding the fucking robot. Call out/educate those who post AI art. Stop supporting other artists that use and share AI art. While there are many things in a capitalist society we're unfortunately compliant to, this is one of those things we have the power to nip in the butt before it gets worse.

Bournemouth aviary criticised as you can't see the birds

Visitors to a brand new aviary that cost more than £400,000 have branded it a ‘waste of public money’ because they cannot see inside it.

The large dome which is home to 200 exotic rescue birds is supposed to offer a ‘360 degree viewing experience’.

But it has been built using a double layered metal grill to stop people feeding the birds and to protect their fingers from being nipped.

And as the top of the dome is made of solid metal hardly any light passes through the aviary. As a result, the facility is too dark for people to see most of the birds.

The much-anticipated conservatory, predominantly funded by public donations, has been 20 years in the making and took several months to build.

Yet after its grand-unveiling in Bournemouth, Dorset, visitors have been left underwhelmed.

Dozens of squinting observers leaned in close to the aviary to catch a glance of one of its many inhabitants which includes zebra finch, love birds, cockatiels and parrots.

Paul Rice, from Marlborough, Wilts, who frequently visits Bournemouth with partner, Karron Fitchett, said: “The majority of people just walk past now because they can’t see inside.

“£400,000 is a lot of money for that, isn’t it? You can’t see a thing – all you can see is shadow.

“All those people who have put money into it can’t even look at the birds”.

Ms Fitchett described herself as a “bird lover” but that she was disappointed by the aviary. She added: “You’d think they’d have had experts looking at the design who would realise”.

John Holmes, 70, and wife Nina, were also struggling to see. He said: “It’s very hard to see the birds. You can see the utility of the double grill but you need some light coming in from the top of the cage”.

Giran Bhardwas, 65, from London, said: “I was trying to take some pictures on my phone to show my granddaughter but I couldn’t see anything.

“I don’t think it was worth £400,000 – they should have spent the money on more public toilets.

“It’s the double caging – the narrow holes make it difficult. If they were a little bigger with a see-through top to let light in, it would have been better”.

Tripadviser reviews of the new aviary have been equally unflattering, with one visitor writing it is “not worth looking at”.

They said: “The gardens are always lovely but we were so disappointed in the new aviary, although a safe haven for the birds it’s certainly not an attraction, you cannot see the birds properly as the cages around them obscure view.

“Such a shame the architect could not have come up with something better. Always on our visits we would go see the birds but its not worth looking at anymore”.

Others urged the architects who designed it to “put it right”. One wrote: “The new aviary is very poor – the birds are very hard to see through the two layers of mesh. This really needs a redesign”.

Another review said: “Very disappointed – could not see the birds. Let’s hope the designers put it right”.

Comments on Facebook have been even more scathing with some decrying it as a ‘poorly designed eyesore’ reminiscent of the ‘thunder dome’ in the post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max.

Chris Grant said it was a “great idea but an awful design” while Bev Lloyd described it as a “total eye sore”.

Moni Chai said: “The extra cage ruins the view and nobody seems to want to fix it – what a shame. Not enough thought has gone into it but I bet lots of money was so we’re stuck with this c**p view”.

Named the Coopper Thompson Rescue Aviary, it was funded by £266,255 in public donations – as well as a £150,000 community infrastructure levy from the BCP Council and the Parks Foundation, a local charity.

The Parks Foundation described it as a “landmark structure” offering more room for the birds to fly and a “360 degree viewing experience”.

They said it was built to “higher welfare standards” using “sustainable” materials.

Derek Heritage from Bournemouth Aviary, the volunteer-led organisation which manages it, said: “It was over 20 years ago that plans were made to remove the old aviary for good.

“Now we are celebrating the working relationship between the council, the Parks Foundation and a group of volunteers and the on-going support from United Taxis who’ve helped us raise the much-needed funds to rebuild the aviary”.

Responding to concerns by visitors that they cannot see inside the aviary, a council spokesman said they would be trialing various “options” to improve visibility.

Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Place, said: “The new Bournemouth Aviary has been designed to keep the birds safe, which is why we have a double mesh layer on the outside.

“This prevents people from feeding the birds which can be harmful to them, and helps keep fingers safe from being pecked. It also provides variable shade for the birds.

“We want everyone who visits it to enjoy 360-degree views of the birds and we recommend standing close to the mesh to see the birds, however, we are aware that not everyone can see through the double mesh layer.

“Taking on board this feedback, will be trialling various options in the coming weeks that will allow better visibility from outside the aviary looking in.

“The aviary is an important part of Bournemouth’s history having been in this location in one form or another since the 1930s. This new structure provides more flight space for the birds and we’re delighted that they’ve settled in to their new surroundings remarkable quickly, making the morning chirp of birdsong that little bit louder – and we hope that all residents and visitors to Bournemouth will once again enjoy seeing the birds in their new, improved habitat.”

Ian ‘Strawboss’ Garner at Heaven’s door

I had this image in my head of Ian, standing at the pearly gates, putting a wristband on Tina Turner.  ‘Hold out your right hand’, he’d say to Tina, before she strutted through the door of Heaven.  It made me smile.  

I had a bond with Ian.  We had a great fondness for each other.  I like to think we still do, as his place in my heart reaches beyond life and death, into the immortal. 

I called him ‘Boss’, after his nickname, ‘Strawboss’, a hands-on leader, but also because Boss just suited him, and he’d smile when I said it.  I can still hear his warm voice in my head, telling me stories, showing me things on his phone, taking pictures, sending me messages.  Like many others through that door, I was connected to him instantly, when we first met ten years ago.  

This was the Ian Garner effect, fondness, gentleness, calmness.  Incredible to think he was a doorman, and a good one at that, dealing with situations professionally and politely.  I only saw one time he had to ‘sort things out’.  He didn’t fight fire with fire, he just doused the two people with calm words, and the bother stopped.  ‘Dad' had entered the room, and under his spell they did what he said and went back to their dancing.

He really loved the Mozarmy Meet, said he looked forward to it all year, to see every face and name from around the world he came to know over the decade. The best part of the Moz Meet, for me, as I’ve said many times before, was walking up to the door and seeing him there, the smile, the cuddle, the warmest welcome.  I am very fond of all the Star and Garter staff, especially Andy and Gaz too, we are all good friends.  But the great unsaid was Ian’s magic.  He had magic around him, a sparkle of something special, a dust, and the more humble he was, the more it emanated from him, everybody knew it.

Ian also had a mischief about him.  A glint in his eye.  He was really fond of my sister, Louise, and she, him.  I remember when Louise was driving to Glasgow to collect me from the train station, and she passed Barlinnie prison.  On Facebook she checked in for a laugh, putting ‘I’m just visiting Julie’.  Ian sent her a private message saying ‘What’s Julie been done for?’

During the Moz Meet, over the years, I’d run to the door a lot, to take breaks and just hang out with Ian, Andy and Gaz, a lot of the time just laughing and gassing about nothing important, the best times.  Ian always had Andy take a picture of us together, then he’d send me a copy.  You could clearly see the love in all those photos that he made frames for.  I treasure that.

I remember when Louise had a few extra wines (all right, me too) and she lost her jacket.  I said,  ‘Boss!  We have been absolutely everywhere looking for this jacket, can you help?’  He nipped away in a flash, two seconds later he was back, ‘Is this it?’ And it was the exact jacket we’d spent half an hour combing the place for.  We stood there in daft awe, ‘How did you do that?  How did you know…’ Ian Garner always knew exactly where drunk people left their jackets.

Another time he messaged Louise after she had fed a two-day out of date cheesecake to her chickens.  ‘Never mind the bloody chickens’, he said, ‘I would have ate that! Your chickens get better fed than I do.’

There was a broken string of a venetian blind he spent hours re-threading, only to find it had frayed completely, and in the end he had to chuck the whole thing in the bin.  There was ‘two red wines’ at the bar, ‘Your sister just got two, I think she drank both.’  There was the un-Royal family visit, when Ian came upstairs to find me and very formally said, ‘Julie.  Those gentlemen we spoke about, they have arrived.’

He loved music, and we shared a favourite, ‘And She Was’ by Talking Heads. We talked of The Divine Comedy and Kate Bush, Ian loved ‘Army Dreamers’. 

When he found a decent pint he talked about it like it was a new born child, or a world cup he had won, a thing of beauty, the flavour, the froth the, bubbles rising, the coldness.  He was a bit of a poet about pints; fish and chips too.

Ian gave me a little Scotland pin.  I’ve still got it.  I still wear it.  I wish we had got him the vacuum packed smokies from Arbroath that he wanted.  The truth of the matter is Ian, that Louise didn’t bring them because she was afraid they’d burst on the train and she’d be ‘stinking of fishy smokies the whole way down.’

Ian was always talking of things he had uncovered, discoveries from times gone by.  We had our annual in-jokes on the door when Danny Marsh asked if the Moz meet would have a ‘meat raffle’, young Dan’s (rescue) Cardboard Moz when the first one was kidnapped, ‘Where do you think it got to, Julie?’ The double outrage when Dan’s was also stolen, then the hilarity when ‘Anonymous' returned it the next day.  I remember how he laughed when Andy suggested I should do a Jane Fonda style hula hooping fitness video. ‘A video would make a bomb.’  

Ian Strawboss Garner was pure class, upstanding, A-list, remarkable, one in a billion gent in braces.  They don’t make them like him anymore, I’m not sure they ever did.  After 20 years of doing the door of The Smiths night, and the indie disco Smile night with Andy and Gaz every week, he died on 22 May, 2023, Morrissey’s birthday.  That’s surely some kind of final wink from him, right there.  

The last time I saw him, he was in his bed, leaving this world.  I told him I loved him, and he said ‘I love you too, Julie’, words I will forever hear, and hold in my head and heart.  He said, ‘It’s nice to know so many people care about me’, and they did, Ian, they really did.  Even if they only met you once, I can say with hand on heart you were truly loved way beyond that door, way beyond Manchester; your smile, your kindness, your glitter flew around the world and touched every single one of us.  You were a celebration of the simple beautiful things in life.  You knew what mattered when the rest of us didn’t.

I’m in awe of Tracey, Ian’s daughter, thank you for putting that picture of us on the wall by his bed.  Tracey has been remarkable throughout this terrible journey with her beloved dad, she is an inspiration.  I want to thank Andy Martin too, for keeping me in touch, my lovely grumpy miserable but secretly wonderful pal for life who is ‘Young At Heart’, and one who Ian adored.  (But he’d never say that publicly).

So I think back to that image with Boss at the door of Heaven, and then I think, maybe he's not doing the wristbands.  Maybe it’s God or St Peter waving him straight in, because he’s a VIP; there's no wristband needed.  And I reflect; I bet he’s got a job up there, he’s busying himself, because he never stopped working, repairing, fiddling and fixing.  I know for sure he’s up there mending an angel’s wing or a strap on a Jesus sandal or a string on God’s venetian blind.

RIP Ian.  How could I ever forget such a special man.  I never will.

A teddy bear that has been nicknamed 'Nippy' is turning heads in a small town in the United Kingdom. Nippy, a large brown teddy bear, is said to be 'nippy' due to its tendency to bite unsuspecting passers-by.

Nip it in the bud and break the cycle. That’s the goal of a newly-discovered class of malaria treatments, which aim to interrupt the deadly parasite’s life cycle and prevent its spread. But how exactly the compounds, called sulphonamides, work is unclear. So researchers added a light-activated marker to the drug, and observed as it interacted with infected human blood cells. The marker then highlighted which parasite proteins the treatment interacted with, in particular a protein called Pfs16. With the drug bound to Pfs16, part of the parasite’s maturation process was blocked. The parasites couldn't make mature male sex cells, rendering them unable to reproduce and spread (pictured): green treated parasites (right) unable to 'fly the nest' while untreated, left, break free from the red human cells. Understanding the timing and mechanisms of this process is key to converting this discovery into practical treatments to end transmission for good.
