Some questions/food for thought: Why can Lucian never be a Black Swan? Has he done something to discount him from that entirely? Does he ever beg to be treated like one (and get suitably punished for his insolence)?

Oh anon~ This is about to be a Deep Dive into the Lore and Backstory. Spoilers ahead for some of the unwritten bits of the vampire series. And this is seriously long, okay? And, more importantly:

CAUTION/TW for referenced non-con, sex work, and forced/non-con sex work, and physical violence. Nothing is described outright; all mentions are only oblique references. Still, please proceed with caution!

Okay. Lucien. This snide little asshole. Let’s talk about him!!!

Lucien could be a black swan–in theory. But he’s been passed over because he’s actually not entirely human. O wat? O yes.

So the “red light district” of this city (which needs a name; I generally picture something like Yharnam from Bloodborne but with fewer monsters and more of a functional city) is called Smoketown. And it’s off to the southeast corner of the city, on the other side of the river. And this is the part of town where the drugs, gambling, dance halls, and sex workers are found. To use the local slang, there’s grindhouses and ponyboy stables, and dollboys around Smoketown.

There’s a bit of a hierarchy, I guess, in all this, with the “dolls” and “dollboys” being the top tier (charging the most), down to the ponyboy/ponygirl stables (middle tier), down to the grindhouse boys/girls (lower tier), on down to the “crib hoors” and “street hoors” (generally regarded as awful and only suitable for the most broke and desperate). This is a real simplification, but I guess that explains the basics?

Lucien was, some time ago, a dollboy (so was Maggie Magpie, actually). They’re regarded as the prettiest and most expensive–if you want to be fancy you could almost call them courtesans. And, ideally, they’ll get themselves a particular patron and be a sort of love affair for pay.

An aside: so this imagined world has different views on sexuality (and to some extent gender? but not quite so much). Basically, when one is young, go ahead and fool around. You’re young, what you do now is less important than what you do later. But because this culture still very much holds to primogeniture, you had better be married to someone with whom you can have a biological child. That’s the ideal. But while you’re young, a teenager, a 20-something, go ahead and fool around–ideally not in Smoketown, but if you’re a boy and you find yourself drawn to a boy classmate, well, that’s just how it is when you’re young. And if you’re a girl, and you find yourself drawn to a girl classmate, well, go on ahead, because young love is passionate but rarely lasts. You can like whoever during this period of particular romantic and sexual freedom.

Once one gets a little older, it’s considered mature and responsible to “grow out” of this phase of experimentation and rampaging passion. You settle down, you marry someone with whom you can have biological children, and your firstborn will inherit your estate, &c &c. But, of course, some people just…won’t. Because this is how they are. In some cases, like Nikolai and Jonathan, they go on with their relationship and don’t grow out of it but rather into each other (this is why N&J staged a secret wedding between themselves, with rings and all; they can’t marry in the eyes of the law, but they consider themselves married). And, yes, this is not considered mature or wholly acceptable, so they keep these (quite committed) relationships as secret as possible.

In other cases, especially among the titled, the gentry, the upper-class, who all marry each other as one does, if you must indulge in this misplaced youthful exuberance, there’s Smoketown. And if must go to Smoketown, at least pay for the services of one of the sex workers of equally high status. (Does that always happen? No. But you get the idea.)

So you have this set of “houses” of highly-paid, highly-regarded “dollboys.” And these houses are both in competition with one another but not a strenuous competition. Any competition mostly plays out in trying to find or recruit new workers (Maggie, as an example, was born to a sex worker and, presumably, a client and was kept as a kind of a household servant in that same “house” until the proprietor of the Aviary encountered him and essentially bought him and kept on using him as a household servant until he was of age to actual start work; he’s in debt at this point).

And, of course, the different houses have different aesthetics. The Aviary tends to have boyish workers that play to that nostalgic “school romance” or “university romance” aesthetic, Lucien’s house (no name yet) tends to play more with gender especially re: clothing and makeup. Lucien likes feathers and leathers and silk and lace and painting his eyes. He knows he can kind of saunter along and blur that line. And it works well for him.

So that’s Smoketown. Now. Off north of the river and outside the city (northwest of it, I think?) is a district called “The Five Churches.” And there are, indeed, five churches, that all share a large plaza or square onto which their doors open (p.s.: weddings are conducted on the porch of the church; just a fun fact there). The sixth side of the plaza is open to the city. Beyond and behind the churches is a massive, massive cemetery–it is absolutely the cemetery for the entire city (please picture Highgate Cemetery or the Glasgow Necropolis).

And somewhere out in or beyond or (actually) under the cemetery is a secret, hidden, exclusive…club, I guess. It’s not a cult, but it’s extremely secretive. A secret society, is I guess the best way to put it. And it is called The Red Circle.

The truth is, the Red Circle is really just a giant whump party. The rich and powerful (men, almost exclusively) have at their disposal a selection of whumpees to use as they see fit, to release the tensions of the lives or to satisfy urges that otherwise cannot be soothed or just because.

Now it’s time to introduce a new character. His name is Cyprian and he is a vampire. And he is also under the control of the Red Circle (for reasons I haven’t figured out yet). They’ve got something to use against him if he betrays them, IDK.

Etienne has actually found evidence of Cyprian but doesn’t know it. There are tally marks in a book hidden in Viktor’s library that add up to about 3 years and change and at the end are the initials C. G. That’s Cyprian from back when he was Viktor’s black swan. And, yes, Viktor turned him into a vampire. And, no, Cyprian wasn’t happy. He should have been Viktor’s heir, but that didn’t work out. And now he’s under the command of the Red Circle. But why?

Well if you have a bunch of whumpees and you love whumping them, how do you keep whumping them without constantly killing them and then needing new ones? The answer came from some of Cyprian’s research (he started digging into the whole “black swan” custom among other things): it is possible to create a kind of ghoul, a kind of half-vampire by carrying out the procedure used to turn a human into a vampire but carrying that procedure out only partially.

Rather than draining the human of all (or almost all) of their blood and then feeding them blood from the vampire that drank their blood, a vampire can inject a human with a small amount of their blood (not taken from the human victim in question here) and you’ll end up with what’s been termed a ghoul.

Ghouls are worthless to vampires: their blood is disgusting, they smell like rust and iron to vampires. And they don’t get many of the benefits that full vampires have–they can’t move so fast, they don’t have the sharp teeth, &c. they do have better vision at night but their eyes are inclined to reflect light like a cat’s eyes will.

Instead, ghouls are more like humans but still have the vampiric sensitivity to sunlight (neither ghouls nor vampires burn in the sun, btw) and are bound by what’s called the Obligation of Flesh. Where vampires can sustain themselves with blood only, ghouls have to eat raw meat with some regularity. This both keeps them essentially sane and (more importantly to the Red Circle) helps them to heal inordinately quickly. Deny them meat and they heal like typical humans. Feed them some raw liver or brains or raw chicken and raw eggs and they’ll start mending right before your eyes (no, it isn’t comfortable, thanks). Yes, they can die and much more easily than true vampires and some of the Red Circle’s ghouls have, in fact, died.

Now you’re probably way ahead of me by now: Lucien is, in fact, a ghoul.

The Red Circle’s method goes like this: one or more of them identify someone they want to add to their collection. This decision is discussed and debated until consensus is reached–and they’re very careful about how often and who they add to their collection. At that point, lower-ranking members are sent to the target’s working house and pay for their services–whereupon they whump them up but badly.

This happens sometimes, even in the best houses, even in the Aviary. The target is allowed to heal but this means less money for the house. As soon as the target is back at work, someone else comes in and repeats the process: payment, whumping. The proprietor is not likely to put a bruised boy out on the floor in a good house, so back he goes to heal and, again, money is lost. And this repeats as long as is needed until word gets out that the proprietor is getting a little fed up with this pattern but it’s not one obvious person or one obvious group doing it. At that point, a messenger from the Red Circle will arrive with an offer to buy the target outright at an extravagant cost, enough to make losing this one boy worth it, especially if it means an end to having an unworkable boy so often. It may take time, but the proprietor is eventually coerced into accepting the offer and the target is spirited away by members of the Red Circle (or aspiring members maybe? pledges, if you will?) and to their secret meetingplace.

Everything about this sucks, including the part where Cyprian makes them into a ghoul, because that alone hurts like hell. And then they’re stuck there, getting whumped regularly, then patched up and/or fed raw meat. One of the higher-ranking members serves as a kind of proprietor there; Cyprian is as much a servant (or slave?) as any of the ghouls.

So that’s how Lucien ended up being completely undesirable to vampires. But how did he get out of the Red Circle? Mostly because he was a very bad element to add to the collection and there was an uprising against the members of the Red Circle and there may or may not have been some revenge whumping and even cannibalism (gotta meet that Obligation of Flesh somehow).

At that point, after the Red Circle was broken, everyone in the collection kind of went their own ways. Even Cyprian was free. Lucien, though, kind of fascinated by Cyprian and the things he talked about, sought out Viktor and offered himself as a postulate. And, as we all know, Viktor accepted him. And Lucien set out to be the best and most devoted because that’s how you get rewarded in the world he comes from.

But the first time he offered his blood to Viktor, Viktor laughed and called him a monster and refused his blood. And here Lucien, having learned of the whole black swan tradition mostly from being in Viktor’s house, had been hoping for such a place of honor and now it seems like it’s been absolutely denied to him forever–because he’s a monster with blood Viktor can’t consume. And, yes, Lucien is unbelievably angry and bitter about the whole situation, especially when Etienne enters the picture (unexpectedly).

I hadn’t thought about him begging for the chance to be treated as a black swan and then being punished for daring to ask for such a thing but, damn, now I want to think about that. He probably would–albeit in private. There’s a lot of jockeying for position among the postulates and Lucien has worked his way up to the top, almost a class by himself, and he will not let that go easily. So to be seen begging for something could weaken his position and that won’t do. And yet…and yet…he does want it…

He might get what he wants someday. But it’s going to take some interesting circumstances.

If you’re reading this you most likely know what the DCP is. If not, no worries- I’ll tell you! The DCP, or Disney College Program, is an internship that caters to thousands of students from varying backgrounds and aspirations. It has two main seasons, Spring and Fall, and a smaller Summer season. These can break down even further to Spring/Fall Advantage (longer) or just the Spring/Fall (most resembles a typical college semester). Students live in Disney sponsored housing and work on property in a multitude of roles (jobs) such as merchandise, food service, custodial, entertainment, hotel services, etc. The program exists in both Anaheim’s Disneyland and Orlando’s Walt Disney World Resort. I participated in a Spring and Fall program in Orlando as a Merchandise cast member.

The pay for these roles are mostly shit unless you land an Entertainment gig or working in a premium location like on Main Street in Magic Kingdom. I think I made $7.25 my first program and $7.50 my second program working merch in the resorts right outside Magic Kingdom. I did earn a little extra when I worked the holiday booth in the Contemporary during Christmas time, which was nice. That costume was also super comfy- the pants felt like yoga sweats and I wore a Chef’s jacket that felt like a hoodie! The costumes at Disney are really hit or miss with the designs and how they fit. Mostly misses. The hours varied for me in these locations. I would typically be scheduled for 25-30 hours and would offer to stay late and would pick up a bunch of extra shifts. Disney has one of my favorite OT policies for interns: if your shift is longer than 9 hours, everything after that 9th hour is OT. If two different shifts are within 6 hours of each other (back to back) then the previous 9 hour rule applies. If you work more than 40 hours in a week than everything after that 40th hour is OT. This was how it worked in 2012- it may have changed since then.

So with that layed out it is safe to say that I was making enough money to support myself, but not enough to do that and have the fun I wanted. When it came time to choose between groceries or tickets to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights you can guess which one I picked. Hint: I wouldn’t be writing this if I had a full pantry all the time.

FOOD The most important thing to have on your radar is where your next meal was coming from. If one of your roommates has a membership to Sam’s or Costco, coordinate your shopping day with them to take advantage! I signed up for a loyalty card to Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, and anywhere else I found myself visiting often. Winn-Dixie is a southern grocery store that sometimes can rival Walmart with their deals- like 10 Totino’s Party Pizzas for $10! I could make those things last for like 2-3 meals each when put with some cheap chips or something. Watching the weekly ads for deals from local places and Walmart helped me find variety so I wouldn’t notice I wasn’t eating right. And I could sometimes find deals on fresh produce, sandwhich meat, or meats that were about to reach their sell-by date! Something I always kept on hand was Popcorn and Pickles. They lasted forever, made quick snacks I could eat on the go, and would give me a false sense of eating a lot (especially the popcorn) which kept me from being hungry. If you skimp on the nutrition remember to buy a good multivitamin and drink lots of water. I was always moving so these bad eating habits didn’t really catch up to me until I got home from the program. I did drop 20lbs which was cool. **

Speaking of water: buy a case of cheap water, enjoy the fresh bottled taste at first, and save those bottles! Reuse them by filling them up with water at the drinking fountains. If you forget your water at home or throw the bottle out after many uses don’t worry. If you’re playing in the parks you can go to any quick-service counter and ask for a cup of water. It’s free!

Eating out is expensive. Pick where you eat wisely. We always went to Golden Corral, Siciliy’s Pizza, or Sweet Tomatoes where we would get a small discount and could eat as much as we wanted. Despite the discount Disney food is not usually your best option. Here are my exceptions: Magic Kingdom and Epcot. Magic Kingdom: If you’re playing make sure you bring a backpack to stow your “Ears” and pin lanyard. Wear plain clothes and have your cast ID handy. You want to appear as if you’re coming to/leaving work. Behind Main Street heading towards Tomorrowland on the right is an easy entrance to the Utilidors. Make sure you’re familiar with the Utilidors before venturing down there if MK is not your home park. If you get lost try not to ask security or upper management for directions. Stick to others in sweats or themed gear. You’re looking for the cast member cafeteria. There’s a Subway down there where you can get a $5 footlong and Aramark also has other options for snacks. I would always split this with someone and have one of my water bottles handy for a cheap meal. It’s also really fun to watch Cinderella and Gaston talk shit about someone (Peter Pan?!) while stuffing their faces with Hot Cheetos. You’re not supposed to be down there if you aren’t working so be careful. Pecos Bill in Adventureland has a little salad bar meant for the taco salads. It’s packed with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, pickles, and other toppings and condiments that you can create a make-shift salad with for free (unless a cast member decides to stop you, but they most likely won’t). Epcot: Make a bee-line to Japan in the World Showcase. The kids meal at the quick-service is like $6 and plenty of food to fill you up. Saves money for the important stuff- like Tequila in Mexico!

I was lucky to work at the Contemporary where we hosted Pirates and Pals, which is a fireworks cruise. They served these giant sheet cakes for the guests and there was always a whole cake left over. One of our supervisors was married to a man that facilitated the food for that shindig so it always appeared in our break room! We also had a popcorn machine (remember what I said about popcorn!) that we could rev up any time we wanted, and so I did during my breaks. Many nights my dinner was cake and popcorn! There was also a “Hungry Intern” box the other cast members would put stuff in that had stuff like easy mac, ramen, and granola bars. I had great coworkers. :)

If you happen to work in a place that has a merchandise cooler for drinks and food or sells candy keep an eye on the expiration dates! If you have a supervisor that doesn’t care or pays attention you could score things like boxed candy or frozen breakfast foods (in the hotels) that were on their way to being thrown out anyways. I wouldn’t recommend taking things like MILK that was expired- but who cares if the Goofy cotton candy was day over it’s mark?

Household Essentials Some of my “tips” here include theft. Cover your innocent eyes if you’re not into that. I would take things like toilet paper, soap, razors, and feminine products from the hotel’s supply closets. I didn’t want to spend my money on things like that when there it was behind this door I had a key to. Sometimes you could score stuff like candles or laundry detergent too. I only took what I needed and I shared with the other interns. Like Robin Hood! You could also grab essentials from the bathroms, like cotton swabs and toilet paper and paper/cloth napkins. The best place is the bathrooms in the convention centers like the one at the Boardwalk. This is conveniently located next to the cast member parking lot/bus stop!

If you’re purchasing buy things in bulk if the price is right! You know you’ll need it, it’s worth it to just get as much as you can when you can.

Entertainment This is where all my money went. I mainly spent my money on shows, alcohol, gas, parking, and food when I wasn’t using my free food cheats and comped park entrances. Before I even left home I bought an annual pass to Universal that got me discounts on Halloween Horror Nights tickets, food, and free parking. I knew as a Cast Member I would already be getting those same perks at Disney. This helped me save money while escaping the Disney Bubble often.

SIN Night at House of Blues - Service Industry Night is the best if you want to go clubbing. Admission is free with your Disney ID if you’re over 21 and ladies drink free until about 10 or 11. Jellyrolls - This is a dueling piano bar at the Boardwalk outside Epcot. Admission is free for cast members and they serve free... wait for it... POPCORN inside! This is a great show and the pianist are very talented. Each night is different as they play requests only all night. The staff is very friendly as well! The alcohol is expensive - like $7 for a bottled beer! We would usually just pool our resources and buy liquor from the Walgreens in front of Vista Way and pregame in the parking lot. If you’ve been keeping your water bottles from earlier handy you could smuggle in your own vodka and sip at your leisure! Buffalo Wild Wings - On Wednesday nights the BWWs in the Crossroads Center on SR 535 clears their dining room floor and turns the place into a karaoke bar on the inside and a latin club on the patio! Great prices on drinks, food, and admission. I can’t remember if there was a way to get in free or not. When they’d shut down you just crossed the parking lot to McDonald’s and ball out of control because it was just after 1 am on a Thursday and your drunk self just remembered EPCOT!! EPCOT - Every Paycheck Comes On Thursday. Direct Deposit, hell yeah! Disney pays you weekly!

Other ways we would save money is by splitting dryer time on small loads in the laundry rooms, carpooling, pregaming, rotating email addresses to get free trials on Hulu and Netflix, rotating which roommate would buy community use things, rotating amongst friends each week for a home-cooked meal, investing in things we would use over and over like board games and cards for entertainment, staying away from fast food whenever possible, and not being wasteful. This post may look like all I did was play and party, but I worked hard too. I took advantage of the OT regulations to where I would work 4 10-12 hour shifts each week. When doing this I would usually get an Early Release on my 5th day or could afford to give up the shift all together. I enjoyed being at work since most of my friends were already there! I had a great time with the guests and thoroughly enjoyed what I was doing every day! My two programs got me the job I have now and the above-average salary I’m making.

My friend Melissa from Perfection Hangover will teach you how to get started budgeting so you no longer have to beg for money. Fighting 'Quiet Hunger' in Every Philadelphia Zip Code

Every week, 70-year-old Delfina Martinez climbs into her daughter's minivan and the two women hunt for North Philadelphia's cheapest groceries.

Both agree that The Richmond Shops IGA on Aramingo Avenue provides the best bargain after factoring time in traffic, cost of gas and quality of food.

Wherever there is a deal, Martinez and her daughter said they'll find it. This is the high cost of being broke: The ingenuity and time required to find every possible discount that could make the difference between enjoying a meal and paying the bills.

Martinez estimates that she spends about $160 each trip to feed herself, her two granddaughters, three dogs and a cat. Her Social Security benefits barely cover her bills, so Martinez works as a seamstress on the side, she said.

“Sometimes it’s … hard to spend money,” Martinez told NBC10. “The food is a little expensive, but you have to eat. I don’t have much left over.”

In constant fear of foreclosure, Martinez checks in regularly with utility companies when she can’t pay a bill on time and works with the city to pay off property taxes, she said. Martinez worries that she will lose her home if she doesn't keep officials informed of her precarious income.

“It’s poor people living in the neighborhood and they’re trying to bring in the rich people,” Martinez said.

Her 47-year-old daughter, Marlene Cruz, pulls up the minivan and loads the three shopping carts of food accumulated between the two women. Both Martinez and Cruz live closer to Lehigh Avenue, but they drive down to the IGA off York Street because “the deli meat is better.”

“I’ve been seeing the prices go up for quite a while," Cruz said, "but I’ve shopped everywhere from Whole Foods to Trader Joe’s to Shop Rite to this store.”

The national monthly average cost of a "thrifty meal plan" for a family of four is $692 and $866 for a "low cost meal plan", according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Cruz spends roughly $360 every week-and-a-half for herself, her husband and their youngest daughter, she said.

As the mother and daughter team know well, food costs can vary widely depending on where you shop and when. Nowhere in Philadelphia is the disparate cost of food more evident than in this zip code, 19125, where Fishtown's trendy restaurants give way to Kensington's homeless encampments in a mere span of blocks.

Between those extremes live thousands of residents hovering in the midst of food insecurity. They are not necessarily unemployed or starving, but some days they are hungry.

Food insecurity plagues more than 20 percent of people in Philadelphia and more than 1.6 million people across Pennsylvania, according to a 2017 report by Feeding America. The hardest-hit local neighborhoods include West Philly, Southwest Philly, North Philly and portions of the Northeast, where the food insecurity rate is more than 30 percent, according to the report.

But even in newly hip areas, such as Fishtown, food insecurity rates do not drop below 10 percent.

“A lot of people don't want to admit they are hungry or need assistance,” Stefanie Arck-Baynes from Philabundance said. “It’s a quiet hunger.”

Martinez and Cruz embark on the kind of bargain hunting that is only accessible to those who own a car. But just several blocks away from IGA, Joan Righder is limited to walking.

Righder, who turns 82 years old this week, considers herself lucky to live a few doors down from Garrison’s Market near York and Memphis streets. Like many people her age, Righder lives on a fixed income and puts away most of her monthly Social Security check to pay bills. She purchased her home 40 years ago for $20,000 at a foreclosure sale and is thankful for that security, at least.

Still, Righder relies on Garrison’s to feed her.

“They don’t charge me much because they know I don’t have a lot of money,” she said. “I’ll never starve because, whatever I need, they always got me.”

Garrison’s is the kind of place where customers on foot can sometimes hitch a ride home with Greg Garrison or his son, Brett. The corner market has been in their family since 1915 when their forebearer, Bill, bought it from the previous owner. Bill Garrison had been taken out of Horatio B. Hackett School at the age of 10 to help feed his family. By the time he was 19, he was a shop owner.

When 34-year-old Brett Garrison started pitching in at his family’s store, most meals were cooked at home and small markets dotted the largely working class Fishtown neighborhood, he said. Many shops, Garrison’s included, offered credit lines so customers could settle food tabs on payday instead of having to choose between bills and dinner.

These days, however, habits and incomes have changed, he said. Garrison estimates that around 20 percent of his customers use their monthly SNAP benefits at the store.

“It’s like anything - you really get what you pay for,” he said. “You can buy [unhealthy food] for cheap, but it comes with long-term costs, like ... getting diabetes.”

Researchers largely agree.

The 2014 Hunger in America national survey by Feeding America found that people facing food insecurity also have higher instances of chronic diseases caused by unhealthy diets.

More than 55 percent of households who use Feeding America food banks reported having at least one family member with high blood pressure while 33 percent had at least one member with diabetes, according to the report. The survey also found that of the families helped annually by Feeding America agencies, approximately 80 percent turned to “inexpensive, unhealthy food to feed their family.”

By contrast, just 23 percent of families reported growing their own vegetables to save on food cost.

“A lot of people, when they think food insecure, they think skinny,” Sara Goldfrick-Rab, a professor of higher education policy and sociology at Temple University, said. “But they miss that food insecurity is associated with obesity. Your body changes when you’re not getting what you need.”

Recent research shows that hunger can also negatively impact cognitive and biological functions, especially in young people. Hungry students report difficulty focusing at school and staying awake in class.

But food insecurity is much less obvious and should not be confused with hunger, Goldrick-Rab added.

“If you skip breakfast every day, you get used to it. When you get used to being hungry, maybe you can function on some reasonable level,” she said.

For years, Philabundance has attempted to quell some of the city's food needs. It is the largest hunger relief agency in the Delaware Valley and partners with some 350 organizations across nine counties. Their efforts include food pantries, meal deliveries and produce distribution. Roughly 90,000 people are fed each week through Philabundance agencies, according to Arck-Baynes.

Some of those people are in unexpected neighborhoods, like Ardmore.

"You have no idea what's inside those homes … especially people who fall ill, who get divorced, who have a medical emergency,” she said. “It’s in every zip code.”

One of Philabundance’s partners is just down the street from Joan Righder’s home, but she gets most of her food either from Garrison’s or Fishtown Market down the block. Neither establishment is known for selling fresh produce, however.

Her diet largely consists of milk, cereal, cakes and beef, she said.

“They’re good to me,” Righder said of Garrison’s deli. “If I need something, they say ‘Here. Just take it.’”
