...Just Why?!?
Like many people the Bold Type has been one of my favorite shows since it came out. The clothes, the characters, the setting, the new age story lines (Give or take) was amazing to me. They have supportive bosses! Girl love! and conflict that gets resolved rather then covered up to stew and stir till there is some big explosion. With that being said... I have not watched The Bold Type in a few episodes mostly because, I have been seeing the outcomes of each on social media and decided that I did not want to see it with my own eyes.
I’ll start with Jane
I’ll be honest Jane was never my favorite I loved her but, I always gravitated more towards Sutton and Kat. I absolutely loved he medical story line and how that played into her and Ryan’s relationship because, all of that does play into reasons why people stay with or leave someone. I know a lot of people were not happy when she stayed with Ryan but, I will say I know people who have been in similar situations and have ended up with that person and made it through on the other side together. Now obviously there was more to it than just cheating given that Jane was not told the truth from the start and it just pilled on. I really liked how their relationship ended I think it was a great moment for Jane and showed a lot of growth. Then BAM she’s falling for another guy, who is incredibly similar to Ryan. WHY!?! Now like I said I haven’t seen the episodes past the one where they’re snowed in so, I don’t for sure know whats happening with Jane right now because, of all the other crappy story lines people are (rightfully screaming about). Jane has so much potential as a character but, they bury her in her love life or give her this stool as the heroine of the show almost that I don’t think her character deserves because, they are not letting her breath outside of boy drama.
Now for Kat... What the actual hell?
at first I was excited to see Kat in a completely different circumstance than what we have seen. She comes from a place of privilege in the since of finances, she didn’t have to worry about rent or food or a pay check. So, to see someone who was such a force to be in a place where I myself am usually in and to see how she dealt with that was, inspiring to me, which I know sounds cheesy but, its true. Seeing her struggle with money was something I really needed to see because, everyone deals with it differently and Sutton or Jane’s out look on money is completely different than Kat’s. Though there could have been better ways then taking away her job.
I’ll admit I do not hate Eva’s character I do not agree with her choices as a character but, I don’t agree with all the choices the characters make in this show. And I apologize if it sounds like I’m making excuses for Eva (Ava?) that’s not what I’m trying to do. Had they introduced Eva as a rival turned possible ally, someone to butt heads with Kat in way that was beneficial to them both in being able to learn and grow from each other and come out of it with an educated look into the other side, I would have welcomed it with open arms but, they didn’t. Instead they made them have a relationship .2 seconds after introducing the fact that Eva was gay and basically her entire character as well. I have seen Aisha’s post and I gotta say I feel so bad for her, I know she loves this show and her character and it takes guts to stand up to a room full of people when you think something is wrong and, it is so wrong. The first half of season 4 was great for Kat in my opinion we got to see her sexuality become a more of a prominent role, as she came out as Bi-sexual, I thought that was a really great story line and bringing out a lot of the issues in the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to being bi-sexual. But, that just went away and now her she is sleeping with a powerful Conservative  white women, why did they think that would be okay? Eva’s gay so she’s resolved of anything else negative about her? How do they expect them to take away actually important information from each other when in a few episodes they’ll probably break up and all of the interactions will be tainted by the fact she’s an Ex. Not to mentioned the Eva helps Kat get her job back story line WAS RIGHT THERE. also note I want to say thank you to the actor who plays Eva for siding with Aisha even though it could very well mean she is out of a job.
Now Sutton Brady- HUNTER
Sutton has been my favorite character from the beginning of the series, and her and Richard's relationship though troupe-y was very refreshing. Yes, they had their issues and arguments but, all couples have them. I would honestly be more concerned if they didn’t because, that would be incredibly unrealistic. But, Richard has been nothing but, supportive and Sutton has been able to grow and do what she loves - so why the fuck did they ever think it would be totally in character for Richard to just leave? and then for Sutton to say “I don’t know who I am without him” and then proceed to cheat? Have they been watching a different show this whole time? Sutton has always been her own person, has she become a bit more dependent yes, that’s what most people do that is a marriage it is someone you can Depend on for the rest of your life. It is work that should be done by both parties and we have seen that multiple times in their relationship.
I know that kids are a big deal, personally I have no clue how I feel about kids I kinda of go back and forth but, I’m also much younger than Sutton and not married or in a committed relationship.  But, what bothers me so much about this story line is 1) No one talked about adoption of maybe an older kid-teen I feel like that option is rarely explored and we’ve Sutton doing amazing things with Oliver’s daughter. I know that, that is still a kid it is still a huge life style change but, it is still a possibility worth talking about. And then 2) they really just jumped from zero to sixty Richard just left and Sutton cheats. It puts them both in such a bad place and light and I realize these things happen but, why do we keep having to watch them happen all over again time after time. It is a tired and aggravating story line. There is no version of Richard’s character that this story makes sense in he has been a great person and a great partner so, I could understand him having to leave maybe for a night just to clear his head but, there is no way I see him not telling Sutton where he is and staying gone. And as for Sutton no matter how hurt she is I really don’t ever see her cheating, she was in a relationship with a cheater and she went out of her way to make sure it was made right. Not to mention we’ve seen a good amount of growth with her mother and I can understand how actually having a baby and then losing it could stir a lot of that up, kind of wash it away and set her back in her growth but, this is not only out of character its not entertaining in any form. I’ll be incredibly disappointed if the set them on a road to divorce right after they got married and were a great example of a working couple.
So I don’t what I’m going to do when/if the show comes back, maybe they were planing a way to get out of all these messes with the next few episodes they didn’t get to shoot. But, if this is the story lines they want to continue on they, it’ll just be another show that didn’t live up to its potential and another example of how shock value is ruining the industry.

What are the important bisexual characters that you said helped you? I am having a hard time finding good bi representation in which they aren’t considered promiscuous or unstable
Hiya anon ! What a quality question, thank you ! Here’s another mini essay about bi rep lmao.  If there are some that I forgot please tell me ! And to everyone, tell me about the bi characters who made an impact on your life, I’d love to know !!!!
Okay so.
-  When I answered the anon and talked about the characters that helped me come to terms with my sexuality, I talked about two in particular. Jack Harkness from Torchwood is depicted as very promiscuous, and somewhat instable. He still meant a lot to me because a) him sleeping around was never that much of a problem, it was because he was from the future, where things were different, which I thought was refreshing and b) his instability was because of the weight of being an immortal hero. Also fanon!Dean Winchester from SPN, as an older, more macho, emotionally witholding, badass dude written as bi meant a lot to me, but he doesn’t really avoid that stereotype either. But at least they were heroes.  However, I can understand wanting bi characters that actually don’t fit that stereotype, because bi people irl aren’t all like that, even if there is nothing wrong per se about sleeping with a lot of different people, or having mental issues to struggle with. And that was a while ago and now we have more and more cool characters ! Such as :
- Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. One of the best portrayals of bisexuality on TV imho. She didn’t start out as bi, she was this tough, cool, scary but with a heart of gold cop who had a lot of other plotlines before. But then, since they saw that a lot of wlw got this vibe from her, were really into her, and the actress came out as bi herself, they decided to use this. So it was super organic, and the way they introduced the subject was true to Rosa herself ; she’s a super private person, she doesn’t like anybody knowing about her life (it’s actually a running joke and Rosa Diaz has been implied to not even be her real name). But then she is dating a woman, and struggles with her parents not understanding and her coworkers find out, help her and support her. Her gay captain is there for her in his typical stoic but hilarious way. They organize game night with her when her parents won’t anymore. We see her crushing on women and dating, but it is treated exactly as the other character’s love life, they never make a big deal out of it. She isn’t the token queer character. She says outright she is bisexual and there is a specific point about her mom not understanding it’s not a phase and thinking she’ll end up with a man anyway, which #relatable. The focus is on the team as found family. Also right now she’s dating a butch woman, which is awesome since they are so underrepresented on TV and I hope we see more of her. That show really is my comfort show, it’s still bloodly hilarious and it really transcends the format to say some really deep woke stuff too, but never in a way that feels on the nose. Everyone should watch it tbh.
- Korrasami ! Oh my god, I was so blown away when they got together. They’re two characters from the animated series Legend of Korra, they start out as rivals in love who have feelings for the same guy, but as they have to fight baddies together, they become bestest of friends, and both fall out of love with the guy. Then in season 3 and 4, their relationship becomes central to the show, as Asami stands by Korra through some really tough shit. Also, they’re both ultra badass and fight really well together. A lot of fans started reading their chemistry as romantic, but we’d never thought they’d actually go there. But the show ends with them walking into the ‘sunset’ (well, the spirit lands) together, holding hands. Now, it was never completely explicit on the show BUT they were dealing with a lot of censure from the networks and you have to be willingly obtuse not to read it as romantic. And after that the creators drew them on dates, and there is a comic series in which they are shown kissing, talking about their feelings, introducing each other to their families, etc. It made me feel so validated when it happened, and I just adore the whole ‘love triangle ditches the middle one and fall in gay love with each other’ trope. (is it a trope yet ? it should be.) It’s still a kids show at its core, but it has amazing depth and deals with some very deep shit. Korra starts off as a bit annoying but she has a really cool development, she’s a girl character we need more of - brave, dynamic but also brash and reckless and action driven in ways that are almost always exclusively shown for boys. And Asami is a more typical girly girl but she’s also a brilliant engineer and has a spine of steel and she’s also very slyly funny. They’re amazing. And the comics are super cute.
- Now there are a lot of characters who are bi/pan that I love, and are good characters in themselves, but their arcs do intersect in some ways with promiscuity and mental instability. I’m thinking about Even from Skam and all his remake variants, Magnus Bane from Shadowhunters, several characters from Black Sails, Sarah Lance and Constantine from Legends of Tomorrow, Eleanor Shellstrop from the Good Place, Bo from Lost Girl, Ilana from Broad City, Joe McMillan from Halt and Catch Fire, God/Chuck from Supernatural (lmaooooo), several characters on Penny Dreadful, or in a totally different category, Vilanelle from Killing Eve or Hannibal from the series (who are hella bad guys but it’s never linked to their sexuality, and are also incredibly compelling to watch.)
And even though these characters taken individually, I would argue, are good rep because they’re complex and layered and interesting and never one-dimensional (and watching them feels incredibly empowering at times)....it’s still a trend. I feel like when writing a character that is attracted to multiple genders, there is always this sort of...tangle of tropes that writers default to, unconsciously. Some negative and some positive. It used to be this trope of bis being villainous, instable, jealous, flaky, immature, perverted, manipulative, cheaters, amoral, greey, etc...and then it evolved into something of a reclaiming and subverting this trope. So now you feel like the Bi Character kind of has to be badass, glamorous, seductive, often superpowered or extraordinary in other ways.. And they also for multiple reasons (they’re immortal, they’re sensitive artist souls, they’re from the future, they’re psycho, they’re exccentric comic relief, they’re daring adventurers and pioneers) don’t care about social norms which allows them to sleep and fall in love with whomever. And so they tend to have those super busy romantic/sexual histories and very troubled backstories. In the past it was a bad thing, now it’s often presented as this positive, enlightened or at least fun and badass thing. They’re heroic, with big hearts, a tremendous lust for life and a cool rebellious attitude. They’re complex, dramatic, tortured. Which can be super cool, too.
But it would be nice to have more ‘normal’ bi characters. I mean, boring bisexuals need to see themselves represented too ! Our sexualities don’t give us super powers. At the same time, it is true that bisexual ppl have higher rates of mental illness, which deserves to be explored, but it would be nice if it was actually articulated and not just part of this trope.  But still. We need rep, I think, that is more grounded and varied. So I think that’s also why I read a lot of fanfic. (I was really into the idea of bi Steve Rogers for a long time, partly also because he’s both very mentally resilient, kinda boring in a good way, and very unexperienced in terms of sex/romance, which is pretty much the opposite of the trope)
- I think books, and YA in general, are a good place to find these ‘normal bis’ characters. I’m thinking in particular of Leah from Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (from the same book series that gave us the ‘Love, Simon’ movie) which is a super sweet coming of age/romance story about a super normal teenager who just happens to be also into girls (esp her best friend) and is loud and funny and very lovable and has zero doubts about being bi. You also have Adam Parrish from the Raven Cycle, another one of my forever faves ; he has an abusive family so PTSD from that but it never feels tropey, and it’s completely detached from his sexuality. He has magic powers, too. But his character feels completely opposite to the trope. He’s hardworking, somewhat withholding, prickly (and sometimes awkward), ambitious, determined, down to earth, and has a beautiful love story with another boy. And also Jane, from Jane Unlimited by Kristin Cashore, also really cool ; she’s a nerdy, smart girl who is actually inspired by Jane Eyre who has cool adventures in a weird house where we can follow her on different paths depending on the choices she makes, several of which are love stories. And finally the main character from The Seven Husbands from Evelyn Hugo, kinda fits the trope yeahhh since she’s a super glam actress who well, has seven husbands but it’s a pretty clever deconstruction since it turns out (slight spoilers) that Evelyn is actually through most of her life faithful in heart to the same person and the rest is mostly out of necessity, and her story feels very real and raw and down to earth.
- I don’t go there yet but I really want to check out Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Schitt’s Creek which I have read have very good bi rep. And I want to catch up on Orphan Black (Cosima and Delphine both don’t have exact labels but they’re multi-gender attracted and they’re this cool couple of scientists in a relationship that gets a happy ending). I will never forgive what they did to Lexa so I stopped watching but I do think that Clarke Griffin from The 100 is very good bi rep. Alexia from Skam France, meanwhile, is a bit of a boundary case for me because, even though she’s presented as the ‘weird one’ from the group, very colorful and liberated and exccentric, she’s still a very normal teen who’s happy and comfortable in her own skin, which is awesome.
- Disclaimer, I included characters in here that are also pan/omnisexual or don’t have a label but are attracted to several genders, for the purpose of this discussion i don’t think the difference is all that relevant at least to me (i mostly identify as bi for the sake of simplicity but tbh i could also fit under pan so i feel represented by all those characters). But I understand the importance of characters that state their identities more clearly and with pride.
- So in conclusion : there is nothing wrong with having a sexually active life or struggling mentally (even tho that one is not fun). And I do love all my badass casanova time travelling super powered bis.
But we need more bi characters that don’t fit that trope. We need bi characters in children’s shows, or that don’t have more than one relationship, or that don’t have a relationship at all, to break the tendency to always show bisexual ppl as overly sexual. We need bi characters in committed relationships to break this idea that bi characters are bound to cheat or can’t be satisified with only one person. We need bi characters that are mentally stable and successful and happy, to show that it’s possible. We need bi characters that are boring, bookish, nerdy, ordinary, clumsy, not particularly seductive, socially awkward, rule-sticklers, etc...to show that bi people are not all party animals, or doing it for attention, or to be wild, rebellious and socially progressive. It’s just a sexuality, it doesn’t say anything about your personality. Even though there are some correlations with MI or being bi might bring you in contact with more progressive ideas and to see life a bit differently, there is nothing automatic about it.
- In conclusion, reading testimonies from real people also helped me a lot. It’s a very dated but I got the book “ Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out “ when I was struggling with my own sexuality and it helped a lot, to read that even back then (1991) you had all sorts of regular ppl claiming to be bi and that it was not a phase or a fad or whatever.

it jay now fckin plot w me u lil dickens. ( also pls at least read the last bullet it’s v important like,,,, and i dont mean j important in that sorta ‘btw my fav restaurant is named after me’ i mean,,,, pls read it. )
hEY HEY HEY KIDS !! im weak and im bringin emma frost 2 the crew. let it be known that im still studyin up like i kno a good amount abt her but not as much as i kno abt ivy and even w ivy who i’ve played multiple times im like,,,,,, sO BEAR W ME!!! I S2G I WILL GET BETTER AS TIME PASSES I GOTTA BUNCH OF COMICS UP W HER bc tbh,,,, i h8 myself but i’ve never liked the x-men movie ( speaking of which im gonna have 2 crop so many fckin gifs and also probs make some rip ) anyWAY
my weird-ass app is gonna help w this let’s go:
“BOSTON (ig)“
first of all,,,, the xmen are like. everywhere so i just set it where she was born and, for the most part, raised. her dad was a dick. mom loved pills. one sister was also a dick ( and emma killed her later on lmao get rekt ). other sister was ok i guess. brother was awesome i love christian but also got real fcked up bc of their dick dad.
there were a bunch of debacles involving an uncalled for student-teacher romance, a loan shark fake kidnapping turned real kidnapping, another uncalled for student-teacher romance, a mentor who turned out to also be a dick but it’s ok bc now she knows how 2 do everything, was ostracized for being a mutant bc that’s how things go
will get 2 ‘do everything’ in the last bullet
“EMMA FROST GDI U AINT CREATIVE RMR WHEN U WERE THE WHITE QUEEN BC I DO“
the hellfire club was like super elite but also super corrupt and there were rankings and white queen was the highest u could get
while lana del rey fucked her way to the top, emma frost basically tortured and killed her way to the top
was like. on top of the fckin world for forever. the hellfire club was VERY pro-mutant, anti-human. but also very fucked up.
fckin loVED torturing ppl thru images put inside their mind. what a bitch.
she actually fought the x-men multiple times bitch u j wait.
...eventually teamed up w the x-men.
...eventually became an x-man.
has fickle relationships w most of the other x-men tho bc like “who r u gonna be todAY EMMA HUH???”
“ANTIHERO (sometimes)“
she’s the ‘token evil teammate’ to the x-men bc who would i be if i didnt play a manipulative lil dickens ?? not jay. that’s for sure.
sometimes reverts to straight-up villainy. has killed innocent enough ppl during her time in the x-men.
a bitch.
has a HUGE guilt-complex that has been lampshaded. like 100% blames herself for the deaths of every single one of her students (bc. a lot of her students have died. and it’s rly sad. bc her students are p much the only thing she cares abt.)
like the comic that's famous for lampshading it (aka the comic that everyone fckin loVES and knoWS that talks abt it briefly) it’d be a spoiler 2 take a screenshot but gimme a second
after jean found out abt emma and scott’s psychic love affair she entered emma’s mind (technically vice-versa) and made her relive some p bad moments which??? honestly??? cruel. but also like,,,, bitch deserved retribution
the one thing that made everyone stop jean tho was as follows:
( 1 ) ( 2 ) ( 3 ) (shut up scott)
ALSO THIS IS A BIG ONE it happened right after genosha and for those of u who dont kno emma was in a coma then woke up in iceman’s body which should explain wtf is happening in the picture:
( 1 ) ( 2 )
v much blames herself for genosha too. which. she legit. didnt do anything. in.
so ya. she h8s herself sometimes. but.
also has a superiority complex. ok.
technically w scott (like,,,, before inhumans but im not counting that bc tbh i rLY FCKIN HATE THAT STORYLINE FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS) but,,,,,,, i hate how they got 2gether,,,,,, and it’s been lampshaded multiple times that how they got 2gether wasnt right (emma lampshaded it once) and how their relationship can be toxic sometimes so like.
v on the fence abt that.
she also got boy toyz tho. she aint a cheater but she still got some backup side-hoes.
speakin of. in the comics she’s only gotten w men. but she gives me a hella bi vibe. so she’s hella bi.
anywaY there’ll be more than these disorganized bullets when i get her full bio up sometimes tonight probs. buT powers includE:
a lot. i was gonna list them j using the wikia but that’d take up half of my space. most notably, she can read minds, see pasts, project images, heal traumatization thru mind stuff, make ppl see a $100 bill when she actually gave them a newspaper clipping, possess ppl’s minds, can turn into a diamond form and becomes impervious to bullets. when i get her abt page up they’ll all be listed.
marvel sucks they gave her v few weaknesses which is honestly v unfair but they are:
“while in her diamond form, frost is unable to access her telepathic abilities.“
“alcoholic: after killing her sister, she became alcoholic.”
that’s legit all they listed.
i am not kidding when i say i wish she had more listed weaknesses like that’s such a mary sue powers thing.
anyWAY LAST BULLET:
ok. so most of emma’s powers would require god-modding if they were used on a playable character which isn’t cool if you don’t talk to the player ( this is why ivy hasn’t used her pheromone thing on anyone yet bc it godmods, but,,,, like,,,, almost all of emma’s powers do so this point is necessary ). if u respond with a “.” then u are giving me permission 2 let her be all telepathic-y towards ur character. i will obVIOUSLY only do it when it feels verY opportune. if u do not but there is an opportune moment i will come to u.
like this or hmu if u would like 2 plot !! respond w a “.” if i can get fckin telekinesis-y.

Gay and wonderous life of calleb gallo
So i just finished watching this series, and omfg how much i love it, from how it highlights problems in the gay community, to dating, to the iconic freckle, it was all just so amazing and i wanna talk about it so here we go. (Duh spoilers) First and foremost, the star himself, calleb. Hes a 20 something gay living in L.A. with his pals and he is the representation of gays in the sense of being a huge slut/cheater. Now, im not saying everyone, but a huge majority of the gays ive met had the problem of cheating and/or sleeping around and calleb shows this wonderfully. Hes the main character so you expect him to be wronged, but its the other way around. Calleb is the one who has a history and struggle of cheating on his boyfriends (for this story, benicio) and this is shown with how he makes a promise to his boyfriend only to almost cheat on him one guy he just met and actually cheat with a "straight" guy his friend just started seeing. And i love it, because it actually bites him in the butt Next is benicio, who highlights the monogamous relationships. Ben just wants to be with calleb but is constantly plagued with calleb being attracted to others (and acting on it) from mike, to billy, to hot spring guy, calleb cant stay monogamous with ben despite ben wanting it for them, and this frustration does come up when hot spring guy assumes he can just sleep with them because "most gay couples are open" (another thing i hate, because most gay guys ive met are so sex focused) Then its billy, the "straight". I think he sort of shows the dangers of dating a closeted/curious guy (especially one with a gf). Its messy and doesnt really lead anywhere because for the most part, he never really wants you/cant be with you. Whether its that he has a gf, or because itll eventually fall apart, dating someone like that usually never works out because of all the baggage that comes along with it. (Also i really enjoy the poly/bi routes he could take) Freckle. Is. My. Icon. She is just lovely and every word is a life quote to live by. Shes like the drunk aunt watching the family drama unfold Len the "bi" eh he was eh. Aside from the ending he was just there Overall, i just really liked this showing of living gay life because (while maybe a bit dramatized ((but then again not really)) it shows a real peek into what some people have to go through and i honestly need more of it in my life and im so ready for the making to continue Also p.s. (the saddest thing to me in all this was mike and how he and calleb didnt pan out. I feel so sad for my cutie pie but hopefully thatll get solved) @humanity-shines @thatsthat24 @gaycomicgeek i recommend this series to you

nononono I wasn't trying to call you out or anything like that. I was just trying to start a discussion. By "glaring, problematic flaws" I meant anything that might be interpreted as racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise clashing with an individual's values (so obviously it's sort of a relative thing), sorry the character limit is low so I couldn't really explain it. I just feel talking about the imperfections in the media you enjoy makes for a good discussion.
okay, i understand, and i don’t mean to come off as overly defensive. i was on tumblr a couple of years ago, when calling out people because they watched certain TV shows was a big thing.
but my original point still stands, i think. i avoid anything that acts like racism/sexism/homophobia is Hilarious or Actually A Good Thing. otherwise, show me a TV show i’ve watched or a book i’ve read, and i’ll show you something that is #Problematic. there is no unproblematic media. all we can do is be critical consumers and push creators to do better in the future.
we all have different things that are going to stick out like a sore thumb screaming “THIS IS PROBLEMATIC,” because we are different people. as a bi woman, i am particularly aware of when media is biphobic, and i may choose to not consume something using certain biphobic tropes, because i am just Sick and Tired of it. on the other hand, other things aren’t going to stick out to me as much. i like to think that i’ve gotten better at recognizing racism in media over the past few years, but am i going to claim that as a white woman i’m as cognizant of it as a woc would be? obviously not. that’s why it’s important that i listen when woc talk about racism or misogynoir in media.
along those lines, most media hailed on tumblr as The Ultimate Unproblematic Media is actually just perpetuating types of oppression that we don’t experience and/or don’t hear about as much, and are therefore less adept at identifying. ableism is a big one that comes to mind, but transphobia/cissexism is another big one. we hear less about it for a number of reasons, so we’re less likely to recognize that, hey, the “disability as superpower” trope or the “man in a dress” trope are just as harmful to some people as “all bisexuals are cheaters.” just something to keep in mind.
so yeah tl;dr there’s definitely something to be said about discussing oppression & media but also asking “do you like problematic media” is overly broad almost to the point of uselessness because All Media Is Problematic.
