To them [people who don't read horror] it is a kind of pornography, inducing horripilation instead of erection. And the reader who appears to relish such sensations-why he's an emotional masochist, the slave of an unholy drug, a decadent psychotic beast.
-David Aylward
horror is about catharsis. it is about experiencing fear or pain or shame or suffering via a piece of media, and being able to sigh in relief when it is done. it is about emotion and flesh and the human condition.
the point of the genre of horror is to inflict the emotion called "fear" or the related emotions "discomfort," "disgust" and "shame." if you do not want to experience and explore negative emotions and the stories that they can tell, you do not actually want to engage with horror. the point of horror is that it might make you feel bad or upset or, god forbid, scared. there are stories that rely on that and it doesn't make horror a lesser medium for narrative than any other genre. it just means that you personally might not enjoy horror.
it's fine to not like horror, but don't pretend like it's something it's not because it makes you uncomfortable.
a lot of takes about horror i see are like, "why doesn't horror have x, y, or z" and the answer is it does. you aren't engaging with the medium or searching out stories that have those things because you don't want to deal with the trappings of the genre (being scared/experiencing negative emotions). liking one piece of horror media doesn't mean engaging with the genre as a whole with all its tropes, trappings, and its rich and varied history.
Ursula K Le Guin writes,
A writer sets out to write science fiction but isn’t familiar with the genre, hasn’t read what’s been written. This is a fairly common situation, because science fiction is known to sell well but, as a subliterary genre, is not supposed to be worth study—what’s to learn? It doesn’t occur to the novice that a genre is a genre because it has a field and focus of its own; its appropriate and particular tools, rules, and techniques for handling the material; its traditions; and its experienced, appreciative readers—that it is, in fact, a literature. Ignoring all this, our novice is just about to reinvent the wheel, the space ship, the space alien, and the mad scientist, with cries of innocent wonder. The cries will not be echoed by the readers. Readers familiar with that genre have met the space ship, the alien, and the mad scientist before. They know more about them than the writer does.
the same is true for horror; people who do not engage with horror as a medium, as a genre, as a way to tell stories and convey meaning do not get to reinvent the wheel. doing so won't be met with gratitude by people who do like horror. it's not helpful. it's condescension.

losing it at the fact that Arthur and the Minimoys was heavily edited for its USA release. Arthur getting drunk & high, trying to join M's army, and marrying a grownass woman was one of the most iconic moments of my childhood I can't believe poor American kids were completely left out

When ppl say that there is no stories about friendship I can't help but wonder what do they mean? There are lots and lots cartoons for kids and teens about well, friendship! Its the main point of almost all stories there. I don't like watching movies so I dunno if there are a lot of movies about friendship nowadays but I have watched old films about it. Like yeah it will always have some romance too for main characters or for the background characters bc if your story has like 10+ adult ppl most of them would look for relationship for the sake of building a family or sex. But also if you can excuse how the women are drawn you can just read/watch one piece and like NOBODY has any romance or sex there even though there are like billions of adult pirates.
#personal#if you want to recommend me something nice to watch comment it or drop me a message#but for the love of everything good pls dont recommend me school drama like I cant watch it anymore#i would prefer to watch more media about adults rn#I can make some exceptions like Hanako kun was really creepy like it looks like rom com for the teens in school but its actually horror#or Utena I started watching it and its crazy at the 1st episode already I want to learn more#but yeah I would like books or movies or tv shows about adults#I would like to watch something like Friends but good#like do u get what I mean? if it was Friends but it was actually really good and less THAT and like more GOOD#I really loved this tv show when I was learning English tho it was perfect for it but like they did so many bad choices for this story#i hate every story about Rachel's love life like its unbearable at this point you should just stop dating and forget about it and live#also they gradually made Ross into the most vile and evil man that could possibly exist and everyone was okay with it bc he is Monika's bro#they didn't need to make him into a monster asshole jerk like he could be just a nerd guy who is clumsy it would be alright#also they should have never made any story lines about Rachel and Ross like they are the worst couple that has ever existed on the tv#its the new level of abysmal I dream about how it would be cool if they have never had any relationship at all#this story would be like 999% better IMMEDIATELY but oh well

I never understood the bit at the beginning of Fear Street hey hey everyone go watch it right now it is SO GOOD where one of the characters that the film wants us to sympathize with reacts to a local tragedy with a kind of flagrant, unhinged humor.
And then 2020 lasted for 84 years.
And I was like,
Ah.
I get it.
#fear Street#original#fear street 2021#also just for the record these are some of the best horror movies I've ever seen and I recommend them to everyone#it also holds a special place in my heart for being the very first slasher film I ever saw that wasn't ableist#it's a trilogy of movies that were all released in 2021. they really tell one cohesive story so it's hard to separate one as the best#but holy shit. I have only ever seen such good theming in a horror film in projects that Jordan Peele has worked on#for anyone wondering it is the moment towards the beginning of the first film when kids in the Shadyside High School are#not reacting how one would expect to a horrible local tragedy. and at first I thought it was just the regular thing at the beginning of#every shitty horror film that people call '20 minutes with assholes' where we mark all these characters as meat for the meat grinder so#'don't get too attached they're all jerks anyway.' which has the unfortunate side effect of you the viewer having to#hang out with these assholes for at least 90 minutes. at the end even if the one likable character survives - who cares??#they still have to hang out with assholes till they die! same as if the murderer got them!#anyway I'm not a fan of this trope. but like everything else in these movies it is actually a brilliant inversion of a trope!#because these movies go out of their way to establish that this is not just a local tragedy - this is a tragedy in an endless#string of tragedies dating back to before these characters were even born!#it's not that Simon doesn't care! it's that everyone needs to fucking cope somehow and he does so through humor!#God I love these fucking films
