one of my least favorite characters from penumbra and why: oh god i really cannot stand mick mercury . i really cant . i just really dont like himbo characters or anything adjacent ..... unless its handled INSANELY well or in a really new and compelling way i just Do not like cis guy characters where the whole thing is that theyre like incompetent and dumb and thats their main thing and often feels like their Only thing i just Do not like it they immediately get on my nerves and i dont like his voice either so whenever hes on the show i am Displeased ...... theres interesting aspects to him and idk i get why people like him i suppose but i cannot stand him . at all . he just is like the biggest example of a trope i really hate </3

one of my least favorite characters from rgu and why: this ones tricky because like .... i like most of the characters that dont do awful shit . like i can be like "oh i hate akio" and ur gonna be like yeah duh ......

fav scene from penumbra: i did this a while ago in this post but ill also throw in one that i forgot which is that i do quite like juno and cassandra's interactions in murderous mask also .... its quite entertaining and puts an interesting lens on both characters . and also theyre both really fucking funny

fav scene from rgu: okay like.... there are many INSANELY good scenes in rgu . so beautiful so cool so fucking thought provoking it is an AMAZING show . however ngl the scene i think and talk the most abt (i literally was talking abt this to my friend the other day who was thinking abt watching it) is the goddamn scene in the dub (idk what its like in the sub i havent seen it i might after i finish watching the dub thru bc i struggle w paying attntion to captions) where they like . show this like triple angle shot of utena and all the girls are staring at her with heart eyes and shit and then they go in the silliest fucking anime dub voice "Shes So Cool" when it is so obvious that they all want to say shes smoking hot and they need her rn . love that scene . i think abt it all the time . its so funny . why would u censor the lesbians of ohtori academy which is apparently all the girls ever

plotline of rgu and what kind of media it is: revolutionary girl utena is a late 90s anime that was heavily influential on the anime that came later and on animation in general (: the plot surrounds utena tenjou, a teenage girl (ish . her relationship to gender is VERY complex and she is at the very least clearly butch to me . bigender utena 4eva) who wants to be a prince and who is sort of unintentionally drawn into a duel for (among other things) the hand of the rose bride, anthy himemiya, a teenage girl with some magical capacities who is treated more as an object than a person by those who want to win her. utena wins the duel, and continues to have to defend her spot as champion despite not particularly Wanting anthy to treat her as her owner and bride-to-be. things obviously spiral down and get way more complicated from there but thats the basic synopsis of the beginning without spoiling later stuff (: (and obligatory warning for anyone intrigued by that that it gets very heavy later on check the warnings ideally on smt besides does the dog die bc there is a Large amnt and imo the does the dog die doesnt really cover them properly or explicitly explain how intrinsically tied to the narrative some of said warnings Are)

My favorite episode is probably eitherrr Train to Nowhere or Monster’s Reflection, I go back and forth. I know those are like. SUCH a huge contrast in moods but what can I say!! I just love the Jupeter in Train to Nowhere, but I also love the feeling of my heart being ripped out of my chest and stomped on in Monster’s Reflection. And also. Benzaiten Steel <3 Also an honorable mention to Murderous Mask my absolute beloved.

As for favorite character, that honor DEFINITELY has to go to Juno. He’s not only my favorite character in the podcast but my favorite character in any form of media ever because I am just absolutely obsessed with him. Honestly I’ve considered making an entire video essay just talking about why he’s an amazing character. It’s just like. Everything about him!!!

He’s a lady! He’s a subversion of the noir detective! He’s bisexual! He’s an absolute disaster! He’s experienced an absolutely absurd amount of trauma! We meet him and he’s self-destructive and he has a hero complex and he blames himself for literally everything ever. And it’s like Jesus Christ why are you like this and then you learn his backstory and it’s like. Oh I see. That makes sense. But then despite everything he’s been through he wants so badly to be good! He wants so badly to do good and he tries so hard but he can’t seem to get it right and he trusts so easily and he keeps paying the price for it and it’s so messed up!!! But then it’s also so satisfying to see him finally grow and learn to want to live and learn to rely on others and season 2 is SO GOOD because we see that development and it’s just so!!!!!! I love him. Also he’s hot

holy shit the soul of the people was so beautiful, made me go through all range of emotions. like the very beginning when i realized juno was connected to the theia again? hearing him call rita “target” because he couldn’t remember her name? the revelation that this wasn’t a result of juno’s usual self sacrifice? that shit hurted. but then all those memories of rita and juno? showing all those hardships they faced together? “every time you need your rita to step in, you just fire me”? *poetic cinema* and then the aftermath. no one to help them unravel this mess? seeing reflections of ramses everywhere? juno leaving hyperion?? joining buddy’s crew???

and the very end. at that point i was already looking forward to see how these decisions are gonna change juno and rita’s lives. but turns out there was one more surprise lol

Someone talk to me about my tpp junoverse Old Guard au featuring: immortal Aurinko Crime Family (+ Benten) (- Rita who is there, but just hasn't died so we can't say for certain she not immortal too)

Buddy and Vespa both broke into the same place to steal the same thing and ended up killing each other thinking they were guards. Buddy died second after bleeding out from Vespa's knife, realizing the woman she just killed wasn't a guard. Vespa in turn awakes first, and realizes the same. Buddy wakes up and the two of them escape without the item they came for and spend the next few millennia figuring out their new situation, stealing things together, and falling in love. Both are older than commercial space travel.

Jet Sikuliaq and M'tendere are a little more than a thousand years younger than Buddy and Vespa. The two of them meet up several times during their lives, but don't make a habit of sticking together for more than a few years at a time. After Buddy and Vespa find Jet, they search for M'tendere as well, hoping to form something of a family. They spend a couple of centuries together until one day M'tendere's wounds just stop healing and the group finally learns that their immortality has a limit.

Things only fall apart further after that. Vespa gets taken and for all their skill and resources, Buddy and Jet can't find her again. They learn that eternal separation is worse than death.

At age 18, Benten's mother shoots him in the chest thinking he's his sibling. He dies quickly; before Juno even leaves to visit the house. He wakes up in a morge hours later, and Juno almost kills him again with the suffocating hug he gives him upon entering his sibling's apartment. They don't tell anyone about his recovery, and Ben and Juno act as one unit until it becomes clear that Benten isn't aging and his healing only gets faster. They move around every few years after that, doing good where they can. Juno takes the teasing of "old lady" because it means he can play the "born first" card with more weight later. Juno's 35 when he gets killed for the first time. Both siblings are relieved that at least the curse affects them both.

While on Mars they meet Rita, an amazing hacker who wants to help them on their mission to put a little good back in the galexy. She helps them find the jobs they want to take and keeps them as off the radar as one can be in the overwhelming digital age. (And with Rita they're basically ghosts) Benten and Juno have both died to keep their mortal friend safe the few times she's actually been out in the field with them. Benten tends to stick with Rita however while Juno will go off on his own more. This leads to him working and flirting with Rex Glass/Duke Rose/Peter Nureyev or whatever else he's going by these days. The last time he sees Nureyev, Juno gets shot through the right eye and by the time he comes back any trace of him is gone. (Another time off on his own he gets stabbed by a green haired woman he's seen in his dreams but he's less upset about her disappearing without a trace.)

One day a job goes so wrong it leaves Juno stranded without any way to contact Benten or Rita. Jet finds him dying for the third time in the middle of the Martin desert and brings him back to his and Buddy's safe house. They offer him a spot with them. Juno says he'll think about it and discuss it with his team. Rita and Benten are relieved when Juno gets home and happy to join up with the other two immortals.

The five of them talk and Juno and Benten learn about M'tendere and how one day their immortality will just run out without warning. They also talk about the dreams they've have of the others. Juno's the only one who's met all the other imortals and therefore no longer has the dreams. He had recognized Vespa the moment he fought with her briefly. But he hadn't realized he'd met the sharp smiled man until weeks afterwards when the dreams of him stopped but Benten kept having them. Strangely, neither Buddy nor Jet had dreamed of Peter in a long while either.

With the renewed hope of Vespa being alive, and the help of Rita's unparalleled hacking skills, the newly reformed Aurinko Crime Family sets out to find their missing member (and maybe collect one more along the way).

(Peter Nureyev had been a revolutionary upstart for many years until one day his disappearing act doesn't work and he's captured, tortured, and killed. When he wakes up again, the group realizes he can be of further use to them. Peter dreams of others like him out there, but when he tries to seek them out and escape, he only succeeds in getting one of them captured. He meets Juno by chance and is determined to not allow the same thing to happen to him. He's grateful that head wounds take so much longer to heal. Through the dreams he still has of Juno's younger brother, he knows the group is searching for Vespa. He will not allow himself to hope they are searching for him too.)

i did this last year, so here we go again!

rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 favorite works you’ve created this year (fics, art, edits, etc!) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world in 2018.

1. Resonance -- a cr fic. this is the third longest thing i’ve ever written, and the longest fic, clocking in at 23k. i will probably come back to the ideas in it at some point, because i’m fond of the concept of narrative inertia and chosen ones are a really neat plot device when they’re written in any different way than usual.

2. summer gone -- a tpp ficlet. i love this ficlet a lot, ngl. there are parts of peter and juno’s backstories that intersect in interesting ways. also, sense of place.

3. the devil and the deep blue sea -- a cr fic. i’m glad canon didn’t go this way, but dang, it was fun to write.

4. twenty thousand leagues to the center of the earth -- a taz ficlet. honestly, i just really like the image of this fic.

5. and, as last year, i’m gonna count my original work this year as #5-- several short stories and an entire audio drama (which will be a thing you can listen to in about four months!!!).

Are you aware that you are an amazing writer?Uhh I’m aware I’m good enough to scare my English teacher so yeah? Maybe not amazing but thank youu I’m working on it.

What is the hardest thing to write about?There’s a few things I physically can’t write about no matter how hard I try to how long I turn the words over in my head so.. those.

Who’s your favorite character in TPP?UM Juno and Nureyev and Buddy and ??? Probably just Juno if I had to pick one. But also he’s a dumbass who needs to sort out his issues but he’s trying his best and he’s super relatable so??? Yeah Juno.

Why do you resonate so much with the podcast? There’s so many aspects to it that I get, I’ve written an actual essay on it, it’s so frickin relatable and real and podcasts are the best because they’re right in your head rubbing up with your thoughts? There’s a lot of reasons. Plus I don’t like watching stuff much and podcasts can be taken anywhere and listened to anytime. It’s an easy to access second home. Or… third or whatever. Or maybe first, honestly.

Have you heard of TAZ?Yeah! I’m listening to Wolf359 at the moment but once I’m done with that I might listen to it.

If you could have any creature as a pet, what would it be?DRAGON it would be so cool

...and just so we’re clear, the two (2) genuinely entertaining romantic (sub)plots i can remember ever encountering are juno and peter in tpp, and simon and baz in carry on. because a) straight ppl are boring, i’m sorry but that’s just a fact b) they both feature genuine distrust and like... the real possibility of not being on the same side, which is incredibly refreshing after 10001 ‘i just looked at you and was like Okay Guess I'm In Love With This Person Now’ plots and c) ‘oh damn turns out i was in love my arch-nemesis this whole time,,,’ is an interesting but also ridiculous idea, and kind of hilarious, and i’m frankly fucking amazed it worked, like i’d love to laugh at rain/bow rowell for being named ra/inbow r/owell but god... she did that™

The Penumbra Podcast.

This is one podcast I will ALWAYS recommend. It's a character-driven audio drama following 2 main stories: the Juno Steel series (scifi detective story with a bit of spicy hero-turned-vigilante flavour) and The Second Citadel (fantasy. also there's a lizard everyone wants to kiss. yes, including me).

The reason why I love this podcast so much is because there is a constant theme of growth, maturity and acceptance in every character as the stories progress. They make mistakes, stumble, fall down a rabbit hole of more mistakes and despite ALL that? They get up again. Learn to be better. Choose to be better.

TPP gives me a lot of hope that people can be better - that I can grow and be loved and be better too.

SO if you're looking for a podcast with great plot, character growth, amazing tropes like found family and enemies-to-rivals-to-lovers, mystery characters that ghost you for unnamed reasons,, do give this podcast a listen ❤️
