At the age of seven, y/n Sturniolo asked her parents for a library card well more or less begged. She had always loved reading, escaping to a reality that seemed to be made just for her. She read books such as Curious George and Froggy with her mom when she was younger. Then she read those to her brothers.

When she grew older she read the Magic Tree House series and 13 Story Tree House, which led her to ask her parents for a tree house. That idea was quickly shut down seeing the books their daughter was reading and their knowledge of her imagination. 

Gaining the library card and the release of all new books, she read Harry Potter and Dork Diaries, and all other classic series middle schoolers read about. She was a sucker for new books and new series because that led to new realities, new topics, and a larger imagination. 

Escaping to these realities was the only thing that kept the girl sane. Everyone’s attention was set on the triplets since they were born and these books were her lifeline. They protected her from being lonely, from talking to people - which was hard for her, and even protecting her from recess. 

These books assisted in her desire to become an author. The need to create realities that could help others, the need to create a reality where she was the main character, the need to create a reality for people to relate to, and the need to create a reality where she belonged.

She always created these scenarios in her head like most people her age did. She wanted people to be able to read these scenarios and for them to feel wanted.

Scenario 1: A Brother’s Comfort

Y/n had been sitting in her room at her house, it was a Saturday night in the middle of June. She was sixteen.

She had received a text and when she saw who it was from, her boyfriend of 7 months, she squealed a little. Yet when she saw what the message contained, she cried. 

He had broken up with her, over text. Her first boyfriend, her first hope of well, hope. She was numb at first until the message really sunk in, and then the tears slowly trailed down her face.

The triplets were 12 when this happened. They kind of knew that their sister was in a relationship but didn’t know all of the details. They never met the boy, but they knew he made her happy and that’s what mattered to them. 

They had been messing around in the living room and were sent to their rooms after breaking one of the lamps. They were trekking through the hallways when they heard the small sobs of their older sister.

They were too scared to go in but were too worried that it overshadowed that fear. Nick took the lead, not wanting his younger brothers to take the wrath if she got mad. He placed his hand on the doorknob and twisted it. Opening the door, the brothers saw their sister on her bed, a blanket drawn all the way up and over her head, with her phone sitting across the room all cracked. 

They exchanged looks and walked closer to her bed. Nick tapped on her and she muttered a ‘go away’ in hopes that whoever it was would take her advice and actually go away.

Her brothers were as stubborn as her and they shook their heads and asked what was wrong. She didn’t answer and just kept crying. Matt had gone over to her phone and turned it on to see the message from her boyfriend. He grew angry and showed his triplets. The three had obviously figured out that y/n did not want to talk about it and just all silently and collectively decided to lay on her bed with her and stay with her until she felt better.

Nick sat at the edge while he let the younger two curl up around the girl. Matt placed her head on his chest while Chris held her hand and took the covers off of her so she could breathe. Nick rubbed his hand up and down her calf in a way of comfort.

Their mom had noticed the odd silence in her house and went to check on everyone, she saw her daughter’s door ajarred and peered in. When she saw her eldest son sitting there, she was prepared to yell at them for not listening to her but when she saw the look on y/n’s face, her hair disheveled, and the boys comforting her, she smiled and turned away, closing the door all the way.

Even though books were great to y/n and what got her through most of her younger years, she couldn’t help but relent them just a little. By the time she hit high school, a small part of her wondered why she wasn’t allowed to get a happy ending like those in her books. She kept reading, although the books were geared towards the adult age range and her taste had differed from when she was a little girl. 

The books had lost their magic somewhere between the ages of 16 and 21. She couldn’t exactly pinpoint the moment but she knew in those four to five years she started to dread picking up a new book that had a focus in romance, even if it was a very small sub-plot. 

She compared these books to her life, trying to find out how these characters always had a way to move on, chapter to chapter while her’s was stuck on a chapter of feeling lonely and forgotten. She accepted but never really understood why she was the one chosen to bear all of these emotions and feelings. She didn’t wish this on anyone, not at all.

Through the years she read more romance books that were angsty, with little to no happy ending, yet every so often she’d be reading a cozy, cliche little romance book that she could always dream of but never have. She had always set her expectations too high for men, nonetheless people in general.

High school was when her eyes opened up and saw that no boy would ever want her. She didn’t know why, she considered herself to be smart, somewhat pretty, funny, and a nice person, so why did they always choose the popular ones who had fake personalities and always used people?

Finding this out, she hid more than she ever had before. When she was in middle school, she never really cared what anyone thought about her. Half of these people she would never see again in high school or ever really. 

She quickly learned that she was no protagonist in any story unless it was one about a sad little girl who never belonged. Why couldn’t she be the one who people wanted to write about in stories, the one who got the boy, the one who didn’t care what people thought, the one who shined and thrived in any situation?

At 21, her life had begun, she thought. She had friends at college, if anybody talked bad about her she didn’t know it. It was a large campus with a shit ton of people that once again, she probably wouldn’t see that much or at all, and some she probably hadn’t even met. 

She was still stuck on that previous chapter of how her emotions got the best of her, how she was the one who would always have to carry these emotions, and how she could never escape. She was slowly beginning to ignore this however, she was slowly beginning to believe in another fantasy where she could be who she wanted to be, where she could be free.

She had no happily ever after.

Scenario 2: The Love of Her Life

One sunny afternoon, as golden rays streamed through the bookstore's window, y/n found herself reeling in the fact that a coffee shop had opened just across the street. She loved the smell of coffee more than she loved the taste of coffee. It was a comfort scent for her, and that mixed with books and art, it was like her own heaven.

As she stepped into the coffee shop, the soothing hum of conversations and the gentle clinking of cups created an all too familiar sound. Y/n ordered her favorite drink and found a cozy corner to settle into, her sketchbook in hand. Lost in her own little bubble, she began to draw, the pencil strokes effortlessly capturing the scene and comfort of the cafe and the people within it.

Unbeknownst to her, a boy around her age sat at a nearby table, sipping his own cup of coffee. Intrigued by y/n’s hobby he couldn't help but watch her bring the café to life on paper. Not being able to help himself, Ollie gathered his courage and approached her, striking up a conversation about her art.

Something that didn’t happen often with y/n was an easy conversation yet with Ollie it was effortless. Talking about their hobbies and interests, finding random things to bond with. She felt a sense of hope rush through her. Maybe Ollie was the one for her.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, and the bond between her and Ollie deepened. They became inseparable, sharing sunsets and stargazing nights, exploring hidden gems in their little town, and supporting each other's dreams.

Like some of her friends, she started to believe that happy endings were overrated. The guy gets the girl, they live in this tiny little house or in a big and grand castle with all of their family surrounding them. Or the protagonist in some way, shape, or form got rewarded with love, family, money, etc. and the villain/antagonist was cast away even if their only purpose was the make fun of the main character, even if their only purpose was to exist to continue the story and the character development.

She was used to getting hurt and so were her friends. Her family noticed a shift in her friend group especially in the later years of high school and the beginning years of college. They were more negative, a bad influence to say the least. Her parents were worried, they didn’t want her to turn out like them, they wanted her to succeed and break these habits of picking the wrong friends. 

Her dreams of wanting the perfect reality faded too soon. She wanted that reality, dreamed of that reality but could never figure out how to get there. It would never work. 

She broke away from these friends when she expressed her feelings for her own little fantasy. They made fun of her, and gave her a “reality check”. She knew they were right but deep down she wanted them to be wrong. She wished they were wrong. She apologized for wanting to stay in her own little universe. 

She wanted to be alone, she wanted to be the girl with hopes and dreams that came true. She wanted to be seen, she wanted to be careless and free.

Y/n’s college years brought a mix of emotions and even started to get back into reading, finding solace in the familiar corners of the campus library. In high school and even middle school, the library was a sanctuary of endless possibilities that seemed to echo the sentiment of her life - an endless search for something more. 

She found a book, hidden on one of the back shelves, in between other old, dusty, forgotten books. This book soon became her favorite, somehow this author wrote about her life in a beautiful way. She thought no one could understand the pain that she had been through, the years of staying silent and to herself. 

She finally realized that the pages she read as a child weren’t a realistic destiny, maybe this was the reality check she was looking for. The library was once a portal to different realities to aid her in her childhood, but now it was where she sought inspiration for her own life. 

Now, she couldn’t really remember what those books were about, she just knew that she was thankful for helping her in those tough times.

I've noticed that, probably due to a desire to alleviate the grim nature of the original, many xuexiao fanfic writers opt to focus on (twisted or fluffy) romantic feelings of the characters. The emphasis ends up being on their romantic / platonic / sexual attraction rather than their incredibly juicy ideological contest and the antagonistic tension mixed with intrigue that Xue Yang shows towards Xiao Xingchen. Basically, there is too much 'lovers / froends' and not enough 'enemies' in their enemies - to - lovers / friends story. (I'm not criticising that. I'm a sucker for their mushier side too. But I'm equally a sucker for a good brutal battle of creeds.)

So let me fill this gap by describing how DELICIOUS the exploration of the 'you're my enemy and u SUCK and your worldview is RIDICULOUS but I LOVE rotating you in the microwave testing the limits of your resolve' aspect is or can be. I'll use some moments from the show / novel that I find striking in this regard.

XXC is very kind but lacks the worldly experience to be spot - on empathetic (as others have pointed out). He's also rigid to a fault. This is a VERY unpopular interpretation of mine but I believe he can be selfish / negligent in his goodness - he sheds caution about possible repercussions on his near ones in his mission to fight evil. He was smart enough to figure out the Chang massacre and trace it to XY. He knows XY is incredibly vengeful and creative in his vengeance. He's had experience with powerful people who will obstruct justice. Yet he goes ahead with prosecuting XY even when Jin Guangshan acts shady and uncooperative. Didn't he consider that this might put a target on his well - known partner Song Lan ?

Welp, then the Baixue bloodbath happens and XXC very understandably blames himself. I know we like to say it wasn't his fault, and of course it technically wasn't, but he did commit a grave error in not thinking through the consequences. It could be a miscalculation, negligence or even cavalier tunnel - vision, depending on your opinion. But anyway, XXC's morale is shattered and as others (like ameliarating) have said, he determined to never end up harming others in his quest for righteousness again.

XY wiped out Baixue for revenge, but also to kill XXC's hopes and vision, again also mentioned by others. May be a stretch, but it could be XY's way of saying 'hah, you don't care to understand why the world is as awful as it is, and then blame ME for doing shitty things to live it up in a shitty world. So let me show you how things actually work, and why my existence and lifestyle are valid.' It's like a really fucked up method of self - affirmation for XY. (Just in case - I am neutral on XY's actions. The novel doesn't give us much insight into his thoughts, so I'll withhold judgement on the nature vs. nurture debate about XY. But he's definitely an interesting character).

Then XY starts infiltrating XXC's life in Yi City. Why does he stick around after healing ? I like to think it's initially because he's a) taking advantage of XXC's generous freebies cuz why not and b) wants to torment him, yes, but he's also very very curious about XXC. Maybe it's because XXC's still out here trying to do good when many people would've either quit and hardened their hearts, or been broken irreparably. So XY think's he'll get both schadenfreude and try to find out why this dumbass saved a highly suspicious dying man and continued on his goody goody quest instead of learning his lesson. The lesson XY tried to teach him. Maybe XXC's whole deal makes XY wonder how his life would be if he'd acted nicer and more socially acceptable. Would it have saved him any pain ? Would he have had true allies then ? Did he choose a life of callous crime because he is weak - willed and 'inferior' unlike the seemingly unbreakable superiority of XXC ?

So he makes XXC kill on 'night - hunts'. Perhaps to prove that XXC got manipulated into doing harm cuz he's dumb or full of hubris and refuses to wisen up, refuses to become more cynical and wary of people. This ties back into Baixue too. Also I think the book mentions the victims are residents who mocked / cheated XXC ? If that's true, it's like XY is 'introducing' XXC to taking bloody revenge just like XY did on the Chang clan and others who crossed him / his pals. Like he's enacting teaching XXC 'look, if you keep up the good deeds, eventually you'll meet someone who ruins you so you destroy that hope for humanity and become just like me. Your way will always end in disaster, and therefore I'm justified in living like I do.'

Of course, in the end XY realises that XXC's drive to better society was his way of coping with the harsh reality of humans, especially after being ousted from BSSR's mountain. XXC didn't want to live in a sordid world. Meanwhile XY's coping mechanism was to extort the sordid world for all he wanted.

There's a tiny moment in CQL where, after the fake night hunt slaughter, XXC walks past a smirking XY and his arm brushes XY's sleeve, whose grin grows larger. It's like XY's relishing in XXC so casually touching and hanging about him totally unawares. Also he's horny for XXC's combat skills.

So yeah. Antagonist obsessed with corrupting his enemy, wrapping him around his finger, but not willing to let go. He ended up being totally down to bask in XXC's obstinate kindness despite that being the very thing he wanted to disprove and destroy.

XXC hesitates to kill XY after the reveal. What does he get from XY? Maybe it was reassuring that someone as hard - hearted and self - centred as his friend was willing to stick around in no man's land with him. It's soothing because it makes it seem like the world isn't that cruel, that perhaps the potential for good exists in people, hence helping XXC cope with his existential anxiety. He has to hold on to that hope even as his friend's identity is revealed, else there's nothing left for him since he can't bear to live in a world of evil and exploitation.

Why didn't XY move on after XXC's suicide ? If all he wanted was acceptance and shelter, he could've found so many other options. No, he was obsessed with XXC cuz he thought that if someone perfectly willing to kill him in the past over morals hesitated to kill him in the end, it must be an actual stable love. Where else, he thinks, would be find someone who loved him enough to not kill him despite them being such hostile opposites by character and circumstance ? Lots of people could love him cuz they agreed with his worldview or found it / him expedient. Who would love him even when their entire identity and misery opposed it ?

I thought it would be fun to take you on a little journey through some old Inhibit art!

First up is Paulina, who was originally meant to be captured by Urquhart and sent to Earl in Chapter 2 - the kids getting ready to go down to breakfast would have been interrupted by them seeing a new resident arrive, and later we would have been introduced to her in class. I'm glad that didn't happen, the comic is much better the way it is now. These are from 2013/2014.

You can also see here what I was talking about in this ask RE: Paulina's hair being "oil"! Her face shape was also originally much more square than it is now, I tried to be very strict with that angle but by the time I got to the comic I realised that wasn't realistic.

Vic has just been wrung like a wet towel since 2010. These are from 2010 to 2014. He was originally a side character, and then shuffled reluctantly into role of main character. He also used to be a confident jock. Vic is named after Victor Frankenstein because that's what we were reading in English class when I first wrote his character and I was scanning around my room for a name idea like uhhhhhh

Have some more Vics from 2013 (which I redrew in 2021 because I'm a sucker for a redraw). Chronologically these come between red hoodie Vic and "uh" Vic:

Julia hasn't changed much at all, though she was originally a more sporty girl. She just lost a leg and some fingers over the years, she's always been a goofball. Along with Vic, David, and Cameron, Julia is one of the only characters remaining from the original version of Inhibit! Everyone else got cut or replaced. Paulina was kiiiinda in the first version but under a different name and role; the original weird girl with a connection to the protagonist was called Margot and she worked for Urquhart.

Masha was a later addition to the story so here she is from 2013/2014. Yes, as previously mentioned, she was originally a doublade gijinka so here's that drawing lmao. Her hair was so small! Masha is named after Maria GentleWhispering lmaox2

Some 2010-2013 Davids! The half life shirt has me creased every time I see it because I know I was all about that "the cake is a lie" and other Valve meme shit at the time. David was the original protagonist's boyfriend; her name was Charlie and she, David, and Vic were in a really badly written YA love triangle. It's okay, David, I saved you. You're gay now.

And some 2014 Nates to cap it off! Nate existed for a year or so before I finally decided to draw him. None of these are good. I do like the second drawing on the left because I hadn't settled on a final concept for the Urquhart uniforms yet so I was just going wild. Vic also already had a broken nose here, I'm not sure why. That drawing turned into this little exchange.

Closing thoughts on Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card

To my surprise this had already ended, and over a year ago too. Apparently CCS isn't big enough in my circle for it to have been bigger news.

First things first, the worst sin this manga commits is that there aren't nearly enough magical girl outfits! CCS is known for Tomoyo crafting a new one for every event, but this time most of the Card Catching happens so spontaneously that there's no time for a costume change. Which I suppose technically makes sense in-story, but I still reject this and would instead prefer any kind of excuse to get Sakura into a cute new fantasy outfit every chapter, no matter how nonsensical it might be.

Then for the actual content. In general I can see why CCS is such a beloved classic, but personally I've never been too big on it. Which makes it a little difficult to judge the sequel, like is it actually meh, or am I just being a hater again? I just can't get into these characters, I can like a good wholesome story like Yotsuba& where everyone is super nice, but in CCS the cast is just so saccharine that they barely feel human, so it's hard to get invested. It's like Sakura is rather meant to be someone's ideal daughter instead of her own person, like she's eternally pure, ever so helpful and well behaved, never has a nasty thougth in her mind, and so on.

Another issue I remember from the original manga that still persists here is how almost every character hides important information from Sakura. You can "well actually" most of it, like a lot of the time there is a decent reason, but there's just so much of it that to me it feels kind of patronising, or frustrating when the main character is always several steps behind. Some of the secrecy doesn't even lead to anything interesting story-wise, like eventually the information gets out and Sakura is a little upset for one panel, and then everything is forgiven. I don't know how much of a fair criticism this is, but the "keep secrets from the main character to protect them" trope is one of my pet peeves (unless you lean into the broken trust aspect, then it's good) and I feel it strongly here. Also in general it's a good thing that the side cast has their own thing going on so that the main character is not the only one who gets anything done, but here Sakura sometimes gets lost in everyone else's planning.

The new girl Akiho is at least cute, I got no complaints on her. I'm also always a sucker for any kind of twin/clone/otherwise similar and paired characters, so my favourite thing about the manga was how she kept being compared to Sakura. As for the story otherwise… Eh. Feels a lot like a retread of the original manga, Sakura's Cards disappear and she must get new ones one by one. The character relationships are pretty static and I don't think I really learned anything new about Sakura. There are a lot of Alice in Wonderland references, which for the most part felt superfluous. Towards the end Sakura's class puts up a play that's a pastiche of Alice in Wonderland, and then Sakura gets sucked into the world of the play, and the story gets pretty confusing when the characters are both acting their roles and doing the actual plot.

Also if you're into Tomoyo/Sakura or Toya/Yukito you don't need to bother with this because you'll be scrambling for crumbs, there is little else in terms of shipping besides Sakura/Syaoran. Which is like the most vanilla ship ever, sure it's wholesome but man I just can't get anything out of them.

hi, friends, guess what time it is? it's DEEP DIVE RING POSTS with katy (and vamp). today's theorizing sesh is near and dear to my heart, namely because it actually took me awhile to figure this one out.

(but before we start, this is one of those moments where i'm going to say remember how a month ago we said they were majorly stalling this storyline until wrestledream because all this shit started to not make sense anymore - WE WERE CORRECT! we just didn't have all the information, since we clearly didn't know about copeland hopping over and that was in the works during the stall time. but while we didn't have the players right, we were spot-on with the tactics being used because they didn't make sense with what had happened earlier. i'm gonna give us like a B+ on that assignment, for getting the details right but not the main characters, and this is using my 11th grade civics teacher as a model after i wrote a 3-page essay on a historical presidential election where i could remember minute details but not who fucking ran in the race.)

anyway, keep that in mind as we head into DEEP DIVE THEORY TIME with katy, because we're going to look at these two theories:

darby is not actually injured

they are stalling again

let's start with #1! WHAT?? you say, and yo, i know, it took me weeks to figure this out, too, because dude has legit been doing a good job with this. except... not quite good enough. let's break this part down first, because honestly, we're giving him mad props for his, on account of he's fucking smart, and also we were suckered in and i mean, i gotta give props where props are due.

i'm still not totally sure if he really did get injured at wrestledream or not, but if he DID, it certainly wasn't bad enough to stop him from immediately going to europe and climbing mountains for like 2 weeks. dude was rappelling. there's some really fucking important shoulder and arm shit that goes into rappelling lol. but specifically, i kept waiting for an update after wrestledream that never materialized - either on the dirt sheets or on his IG stories, like a "haha broke my arm #coffindrop" you know what i'm saying? never happened. he showed up once, did a promo, and left. to climb mountains. sus.

then, he comes back. attacks nick after his interview with his mom (typing that sentence was a joy, i can't lie). the next day, goes to nitro and absolutely does not land that flip. what he DOES land is on his shoulder. the dirt sheets DID pick this up, with some pretty hilarious headlines. after this, he appears on AEW in the sling. the very, very prominent sling. it's so prominent, that it's on top of his suit during the ric flair segment. he even goes so far as to film an IG story with sting as sting tells him NOT TO GO TRY THE TRIKE FLIP AGAIN and darby being like NO I HAVE TO DO IT EVEN IF I'M INJURED and you know what, me not catching it here is on me, 100%. they were laying it on way too thick. that injury was THROWN IN OUR FACES lol. i'm better than this, i swear.

he even got nitro to go in on it, which, again, props. they were all "oooohhh against doctor's orders" okay but you know what works? if he actually wears the sling. when he goes. and has something on his arm. when he does the flip again. and doesn't fucking coffin drop a dude backstage from a cabinet using his bad shoulder without missing a beat and then going in for one of those half bro hugs after. he completely no sold it there. that shit ain't injured.

(also please enjoy the random wrappings - sometimes it's his elbow! sometimes it's his wrist! sometimes his shoulder is broken, other times fractured! good lord, he's like a fucking wizard.)

i'm pretty impressed, though. he knew that everyone would go "this idiot is ACTUALLY DUMB ENOUGH to do this shit while injured!" and he banked on it and he played us. that's like... the most self-aware thing ever. god dammit. he's hotter now. i'm so mad. I AM SO MAD lol.

so okay, he's not actually injured. that's fucking kayfabe. but the question is... why? why are they running a kayfabe injury? if they just needed to get him time off for his europe trip, then... he's back now? why keep it up now? in fact, why go HARDER with it now, when there isn't any reason to keep him out of the ring?

and that's #2: they're stalling again.

specifically, they are stalling for full gear. this storyline has suffered so many incidents of stalling, and we've really only identified the source of one of them: copeland. but, like, why did darby win the battle royale on july 19 to get a shot at the TNT belt AT THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER? why on EARTH was that so delayed? anyway, i digress, the point is they are stalling, and i don't know why. sting is around until march. this feud has been going for months, so they don't need to add any additional story, so... unless darby fucks off for another climbing trip, i can't figure out why they would stall just for another PPV. this FUCKING STORYLINE has run for MONTHS and there is no REASON that christian should still be targeting darby when he's gotten everything he wants (the belt and nick wayne).

they are obviously teasing that copeland is going to be the third person in the sting+darby team, but vamp doesn't think he will be and i'm inclined to agree with her. the copeland v. christian feud is going to be a major thing for them, and it doesn't make much sense for them to go against each other in the ring for the first time!! ... in a 6-way tag match that isn't even really about them. we think there will be a bait and switch with this: they'll tease it like it will be copeland, as they already are, and then they'll pull the "i can't fight my friend" and bring someone else in, thus prolonging the inevitable copeland v christian show-down for later when it can be its own match, as it deserves to be.

but why. are. they. stalling. this. until. full. gear.

so the options are, in order of most likely to least likely:

darby is going to leave for another trip and they needed to give him time off. since it's his fake injury, this is my most likely option. the only reason i question this is because he's pulled this kayfabe injury into REAL TIME and darby... does not really do that super often. his IG runs non-kayfabe at all times. they could easily "fake" the injury on screen and he does whatever he wants off-screen.

they want to put more story into this, which is not necessary at this point because this has literally been going since july. but AEW likes beating dead horses with sticks, so. possible.

they are going to use ric flair and wanted to give him a PPV so it's a bigger match, which doesn't really make sense since he had a huge retirement match last year. but, maybe it's a big middle finger to everyone else, who knows.

they are stalling because they need the location of full gear.

why would they need the location of full gear? because full gear is happening in los angeles. if you needed to bring someone back after an altercation and were not sure what the reception was going to be, the best place to do it? hometown crowd. BUT KATY THIS MAKES SENSE WHY IS THIS THE LAST OPTION. because i don't trust ANY OF THESE FUCKS to do what makes narrative sense here lol. bringing jack in for copeland IS THE MOST SATISFYING NARRATIVE OPTION IN THIS STORYLINE. it's got punch, it's got pop, it's got the mirror of the mentee vs mentor we already have with darby and nick. it's finally bringing jack in when his GHOST has been behind this entire thing from the start. BUT IT HAS ABOUT A .2% CHANCE AND WE KNOW I DON'T EVER GET WHAT I WANT. so it's the last option. is it the most satisfying? yes. would it be what i wrote if this was a story? yes. will they do it? no.

honestly, darby doesn't need to BE in this story any longer. the only thing he needs to come back for now is nick, and they can tease that out until march before he leaves for everest and have the big darby vs nick showdown then. there's certainly no need to do it now: let it simmer. let them beat each other up backstage more. let shayna have more tearful interviews about their bro-tastic relationship. but he doesn't need to be here. and i can't figure out why christian is still targeting him, specifically. there's no point.

so... i'm stuck. i guess we'll see where they go with this, and if darby fucks off again, then we have our answer as to why they were stalling for nov. 18th, but for now.... i don't know! i have nothing. i have the most compelling narrative option, and i don't believe that they'll do it. so we're stuck lol.

i welcome any ideas to this, because i'm annoyed that i can't find the thread to pull this one out. and as always, if i'm wrong, it's because i'm actually kind of dumb: remember that essay. that B+ was kinder than it should have been hahaha.

Book Review: Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer

Recommended by @sailforvalinor for the 2024 Book Rec Exchange

Premise: When she was a child, Echo Alkaev tried to save a white wolf from a bear trap, but when it escaped, it slashed her face with its claws and scarred her terribly. Ashamed of her scars and the way everyone stares at her and whispers about her, Echo tries to be content with living out her days simply helping her father with his bookstore, hiding away from the world. But then one winter her father goes missing, and she finds him lying half-dead in the snowy forest. The very same wolf who wounded her appears before them, offering to save her father's life--if she will agree to live with him in his house for a year. She agrees, and goes to live with a talking wolf in a magical house filled with impossibilities. And there is one more rule she must follow: At night, she must sleep in the same room as the wolf, but she must never light the lamp and look at his face.

Quote that should have been on the back of the book: "'The power to save him is in your grasp,' said the wolf. 'Choose. Come with me now--or let your father die.'"

Thoughts: So basically this is like Beauty and the Beast + Cupid & Psyche + a whole bunch of other myths/fairy tales...in Russia! With wolves! And lots of books! I loved it right away, because I'm an absolute sucker for anything related to Beauty and the Beast, and I love wolves. I can guarantee that if I read this when I was a teenager, I would have been absolutely feral about it. And even now, I still had a great time with it! It really captures that fairy tale feel, with inexplicable, impossible magic like the book-mirrors and old curses that can only be broken with the power of love. I think because of that, the book kept on making me think of Diana Wynne Jones and Studio Ghibli.

I have to admit, I got so wrapped up in the Beauty and the Beast parallels through the majority of the book that I almost forgot the Cupid and Psyche elements! But then those elements came in at the last minute, suddenly changing the whole trajectory of the book and going in a direction I wasn't expecting (and changing the very style in which it was written!). But that's the way of some fairy tales too, and I loved all the plot twists. There were several moments in Part Two that were seriously epic, and I even ended up crying at the end - which I was not expecting to do!

One negative thing I'll say is that the book felt strangely...unedited? Or like it needed one more proofreading pass, at least. I found a frankly embarrassing amount of typos for a published book, sometimes as much as one or two words that were missing entirely. There were also a couple moments where a character would more or less repeat what had been said right before, without acknowledgement that it had already been said. It just felt like Meyer had written a second draft of the scene and forgotten to remove the first-draft stuff. Nothing story-breaking or too confusing, but it got rather distracting at times. Maybe I just got the first edition and a later edition would iron out those wrinkles?

But on the plus side, I have to give Joanna Ruth Meyer mad props for writing a truly excellent Actually Strong Female Character. Her strength of will and the things she's willing to endure for love were truly inspiring. She didn't have to learn how to use flashy magic or wield a sword to demonstrate her strength (though she does learn quite a lot about magic and does some fencing). She loves books and music, she longs to be beautiful and to just settle down comfortably with a family who loves her. She's basically the opposite of the annoying "girlboss" trope...and yet she is so strong. She would walk to the ends of the earth, endure excruciating pain, and never let go of the people she loves, because her strength comes from her compassion and love. I absolutely adore that. We need more stories like this one.

I hadn't slept in a week – I was weak, I was awake. You've never seen a bastard orphan more in need of a break. Between longing for Jean and I was missing my wife – that's when Miss Donna Reynolds walked into my life.

The girl said, " Mr Ragnvindr, I know you are a man of honor. I'm so sorry to bother you at home, but I don't know where to go, and I came here all alone."

Reynolds added, "My husband's doin' me wrong. He's been beatin' me, cheatin' on me, and mistreatin' me. But suddenly he's up and gone, and I don't have the means to go on."

"I am ruined! My career is ruined." I wanted to tear my hair out in that moment.

"Please, don't leave me with him helpless!" Donna was sobbing into my lap.

"I am helpless, how could I do this?"

"Diluc, please – just give him what he wants and you can have me!" I don't want you.

"Whatever you want, if you pay, you can stay! Please!"

so while I've been reading doth---and I'm sure this is mostly cuz I'm a sucker for good family dynamics---I've been all for draxum and galois and Casey getting to be a good healthy family unit, and have been righteously annoyed on the family for not being able to see that Donnie and galois are two separate people now and trying to treat gale like he's still they're brother when he's now functionally NOT, but then I got thinking about how, if when Donnie got new memories and became galois 'Donnie' continued existing as like a spirit or something, how he would feel about current events. And. I came up with this.

"Oh, no no no no, no no NO NO NO!!! HOW DARE YOU? How dare you care about him? How dare you comfort him? YOU DID THIS! You're the one who gave him those traumas! You don't get to pretend you didn't do anything! You don't get to erase what you did to me, like it didn't happen! How dare you erase my life, erase ME like I didn't matter. Like you can just make up this perfect son without having to deal with such silly inconveniences as the CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR OWN ACTIONS. Because the stupid thing is, you do might have won me over. Hey, so this might be a bit random, but I rewatched the first Fantastic Beasts movie recently and I completely forgot how much I loved it at the time. Then I discovered your blog and I was so happy to see that people still talked about the movies and newtina especially. I just think they had so much potential that wasn't really used in the movies and I that kind of inspired me to write a fic about them (I am a sucker for the 'character who breaks the law for the greater good'x'character who is the law' dynamic, you know, with tina investigating what newt was doing in ny). But I feel I am not as deep in the fandom as you are and I am kind of looking for inspiration atm so I have some questions which would help me to get a few starting points and if you could answer some of them I'd be very grateful <3 (if you don't want to, just ignore this, haha).

Wow, hi! This is random but I completely love it, and thank you for dropping by! I'm so sorry it took me a while to answer this, but I wanted to think well on it and give a good, thought out answer. So here it is.

First of all, I'm so happy that you love them, too! I got into them because I watched the movies, and I can't stop now...they're just lovely and a nice break from the other dark enemies-to-lovers pairings I like, so it's sweet.

Secondly, I am new to this fandom, too, actually. If you're looking for people who've been in it longer and might know more about (for sure they know more about it than I do XD) I might point you in the direction of anyone I'm following or have reblogged. I get my stuff from them, so. C:

Okay, like I said, I don't know so much about the fandom but I'll help how I can. Putting the answers under the cut because whoops, I wrote an essay hi.

What do I like most about Newt?

I like how gentle he is, and innocent. He didn't want to pick a side when it came to it, because as Dumbly says, Newt always just wants to do what's right. I loved seeing how he cared for his creatures, the attentiveness (and the idea that if that's how he treats his creatures, how's he gonna be with the woman he loves? Aka Tina) (Also I'm convinced that as much as he may have wanted to get the international travel ban lifted because he wanted to travel...despite that, I still think it's to a certain degree because he wanted to see her, to talk to her. If not that, look at his decision after Dumbly asked him to help. He initially refuses because he knows they'll lock him up in Azkaban if he breaks the rule, but as soon as he finds out that Tina is Paris, he drops everything and goes. (I'm no expect, but I'd accept this.)

What do I like most about Tina?

She seems very determined and brave. I love how no-nonsense she is! Like she literally just drags Newt halfway across New York because she's taking him into custody. I'm sorry, I don't know her or Newt so much because I still have yet to read the fic recs people have given me...that's my research haha.

What do you like about their relationship?

I love how she is the brave, maybe a little headstrong, confident who knows her ideals and will pursue what's right. and yet Newt's the awkward gremlin boy who's a little scared of her at first but then in love and basically ready to drop everything because of her. (This could be a completely wrong interpretation of them, I'm new to this fandom, as I've said before) But that's the idea I got. (Because I hc that yes, Newt actually wanted to get the international traveling ban lifted BECAUSE lol he wants to travel but wait, there's more. He also wanted to give Tina that copy of his book. I can see Tina as softening towards creatures and to the idea that the world might be more wonderful than she imagines it to be. Like I see Newt as innocent and optimistic, and I feel like he'd be one to show her to smile more. As for him, I just love the idea of Tina helping him figure out practical things. How to go about looking for a lost Niffler without tearing New York apart in a way that makes the headlines; like she'd teach him to stop, think, plan things out. Maybe, that's a very loose guess of mine.

Any first kiss headcanons?

A first kiss? Not yet, haven't thought one yet, but! I believe it might have been @themysteriousphoenix or @keepmeinmind-01 who wrote this headcanon where Newt was talking to Jacob. Newt's in love, and he tells Jacob that he bowed to Tina bc apparently bowing is how a hippogriff (or some other magical creatures I can't remember) shows its respect for someone or something like that. Anyway, Jacob's like "Uhh okay, why is this good?" Newt's just really excited and tells him, "She bowed back." It's ridiculously cute, and I love it.

Okay, the last two questions about why Tina is an auror and Newt a Magizoologist, I left out because I'm not entirely sure haha and I think I'd need a little more thought, but yes, here is my ridiculously over complicated answer that took 5,000,001 years to write.

Donnie, surprisingly enough, isn't the one who figures out Four is alive and is staying with Big Mama. that honor goes to the one and only......... Sunita *jazz hands*

after the final attempt, everyone just sort of went...numb. they got the biggest lectures of their lives by Draxum but they were too despondent to hear it. Raph doesn't know what to do with himself anymore, Donnie's officially entered a depressive state, and Mikey has now been banned from practicing mystic arts for the unforseeable future by both Draxum and his dad. watching them is like watching zombies walk about

for the Prime Leo AU:

the first friend Leo met was Kōya!! they met when she kinda sorta accidently kidnapped him (unknowingly) to help their team win some sort of race. Leo, after a full minute of trying not to panic, thought "eh? why not?" and decided to help. they've hung out ever since <3 (Bludgeon was second, and Natsu was last)

i've finally made up my mind about that tidbit and the answer is: no~!! i decided to skip the amulet thing bc i had no idea how to write that into their character. so yeah. Kōya can't fly due to an accident when she was small (tot age) and they help Leo when it comes to his disabilities

when Leo snuck out for the first time, no one noticed. he did it all sneaky like (not with his portals bc those are pretty on the fritz thanks largely to Prime. they'll go back to normal dw, but his ninpō is pretty unreliable after Prime). but when he met Kōya he stayed out far later than he normally does. Casey was the one who found out that Leo wasn't in the lair anymore, but Donnie (as you said) was the one who freaked out about it the most (followed very closely by Raph)

tagged by @virgo-dream and @seiya-starsniper, thank you! this took me a while... the way my hyperfixations work is, i'll completely devote myself to a piece of media for a time... then once i find something else i move on almost entirely lol. i of course still have a very soft spot for the shows/video games listed here (as well as my blorbos, such as they are) but the only fandom im currently active in is, of course, Sandman.

1: Levi Ackerman - Attack on Titan

I am in a love/hate relationship with AoT lmao (and some day i WILL finish the final season) but nothing, not even fandom war, will ever change my love for Levi. I'm obsessed with his backstory, how he came into the Survey Corps, and how it all sheds light on the decisions he makes and the tragedies he suffered through. I was fascinated by him since S1 and after the No Regrets manga came out, I was done for. He has been through so much and despite how cruel and unforgiving he seems, he actually has the biggest heart and-- guh I just love him. He deserves the world ;^;

2: Zuko - Avatar the Last Airbender

Truly was torn between Zuko or Katara... but I have always had mad respect for Zuko's redemption arc and how brilliantly it was written. I love how it takes a full season and a half for him to have this war within himself, that he makes the right decision but then regresses... before literally becoming sick with indecision and change. And then he finally proves his worth and becomes the most loyal friend and a perfect leader to rebuild a broken society. I'm a sucker for good character stories, and Zuko's arc in ATLA is my hands down favorite ever.

3: Roxas - Kingdom Hearts

God I just love tragic male characters, huh? lmao. This one is a no brainer to me. Roxas is the OG blorbo. I fell in love with him at the tender age of 17 and have never looked back. He is kind and loyal but also a feral gremlin. He is so goofy but sad and god dammit, I love his voice and his baby blue eyes. Also this line, "This could have been the other way around." *shakes fist* MY BOY!

4: Faye Valentine - Cowboy Bebop

We love complex characters in this house! Faye has all the traits of a character I usually wouldn't vibe with: she's arrogant (without much to back it up lol), lazy, and is susceptible to addictions. But oooh do I love a character who uses negative traits to hide how emotionally vulnerable they are. Faye appears strong, mean, and confident to a fault, but inside she craves companionship and is incredibly lonely (despite her lone wolf tendencies). Rewatching the show as an adult, I found Faye and I have a lot in common lol. She needs a hug.

5: Hob Gadling - The Sandman

Do I really need to say anything? lol I love that Hob is the fandom's plaything; molding and shaping him and writing him in all sorts of different ways... but I do adore his canon character. He is brash, stubborn, at times cruel and violent... but then immeasurably kind, loyal, and forgiving. He takes on immortality in unexpected ways. he thrives, he suffers, he works, he regresses, he makes mistakes, he learns from them, he changes... he is THE human experience.

6: Daenerys Targaryen - Game of Thrones

Robbed. Robbed. Absolutely robbed. The writers did Daenerys so dirty, I refuse to accept the final 3 seasons of GOT as canon lmao. (and here's another thing: I would totally accept her spiral into "madness" if it had been handled seriously. If the writers didn't just pull this out of their ass and instead thoughtfully worked in justifiable reasoning for her to go crazy). I'm 100% a stan and there's actually nothing you can say that will change my mind :)

Another OG blorbo lmao. She's been with me since I was a teenager (also I always shipped her with Cloud, not Aerith. I do however ship Aerith and Zack... the latter whom almost made this list. Anyway-). Tifa is the badass motherfucker with a heart of gold. She is insanely loyal and truly the wisest of the bunch.

9: Mickey Milkovich - Shameless

ANOTHER BROKEN CHARACTER WHO GOES THROUGH EXTREME DEVELOPMENT? Can anyone sense a pattern?? This motherfuckerrrr *shakes Mikey and slaps him in the face and sobs* God I love it when a seemingly irredeemable character goes THROUGH IT and comes out shining a new, yet somehow the same old, sarcastic bitch.

(Also please note that Lip Gallagher almost made this list. Another shining example of the writers doing his character the WORST injustice just to keep him on the show. He should have stayed in college. He almost GOT OUT. He almost broke the chain. What he did was not in line with his character and I will stay mad about it).

10: Cesare Borgia - The Borgias

THIS. GUY! AURGH!! Arrogant, violent, sexy bastard. You piece of shit. Cesare actually did everything wrong, he doesn't want to be redeemed. But he is so fucking charismatic and I love that he uses it to his advantage. He's so fucking smart and quick on his feet. He's SUCH an asset on the battlefield. And he LOVES his family! He will kill a bitch with his bare hands if they dare insult his mother or sister. I love that he grumbles when given advice from literally anyone that isn't his most trusted friend, bodyguard, and assassin, Micheletto. Doesn't even flinch when he discovers Micheletto is gay, actually teases him for being a momma's boy, and genuinely grieves for his loss when he flees. He says out loud how he misses him and actually begins to doubt himself without Micheletto there to counsel him. Cesare is everything to me, actually.

About fanon stripping characters from their flaws

I will probs get stoned for this.

I can totally get the fanonization of fictional characters as something very different from what they were conceived, and I truly respect it (after all they're fictional, if it comforts you, I'm truly happy about it), but it's just... not my thing?

I'll be talking about Gojo because he's the first one that came into my mind, so yeah.

If you really like the fanon Gojo to a deeply personal extent, proceed at your own discretion — or just don't proceed at all, ok? These are all just MY personal opinions and I don't want to have a fight online with anyone due to fictional characters.

From the fanonfication, Gojo has become a very sensitive, faithful, sometimes possessive, jealous type of guy, and I just can't vibe with it at all.

Gojo has been cited by Gege as a guy who could never stay faithful to one woman, and he actually is kind of a whore. We see him acting like that in the story (the way he's relentlessly flirtatious — even as a jest — and often disrespects other people's personal space). But that's part of him, and I love the character, so I also love that he can be fallible like that (of course, ignoring the fact that Gege probably said this just so he wouldn't have to say Gojo is just still simping over Geto more than 10 years later and has never managed to open up to another person, but that's beside the point).

He is also a whimsical, silly and a mostly fun person on the surface, so I highly doubt he'd be the profoundly jealous type — this man is so fucking sure of himself (and cocky, and arrogant, and-) that he'd LAUGH OUT LOUD if someone even THOUGHT they'd have a chance with his SO, or if his SO tried to tease him in that regard, trying to make him jealous. Like, he's motherfucking Gojo Satoru, y'know? He's the strongest, he knows he's gorgeous, WHY would this man EVER be insecure? Insecurity is not necessarily a sign of love, to be fair. You can love deeply and not be plagued by it.

I mean, Gojo is kind of an ass and also an amazing character — he is arrogant, conceited, brilliant, a genius, fun, irresponsible, crazy and to some extent, yes, a pretty sensible person. That's what I LOVE about him. He is SO well-rounded, a beautiful mix of his best qualities and his worst flaws. I could NEVER write this character or see him apart from his flaws (when not actively reimagining him like for a yandere or random AU fic, for example), because they're the gold glue keeping the broken ceramic together.

I don't know if it's because I'm a sucker for flawed characters and whatnot, but I really like when fics and such explore the characters in the way they were conceived to be by their authors, with their qualities as well as their flaws, deepening in a unique way what was already established by canon. I think there is a special kind of beauty in accepting, appreciating, and to some extent even celebrating these fallible things that make us (and these characters) so human.

After sending the summer dissecting A Curse So Dark And Lonely (amongst a corpus of other novels) to study contemporary rewritings of Beauty and the Beast, now that the thesis is done, I went and read the sequel, A Heart So Fierce And Broken.

I think I love A Heart more than A Curse.

Grey and Lia Mara have something so agonizing that Harper and Rhen lacked. Or, to say it otherwise, Harper and Rhen, for all that they are very modern versions of Belle et la Bête, are still constricted by the role they must play. The story, their story, has already been written, and they must play their part until the end, no matter the side quests on the way.

Of course, because A Curse is a play on B&tB, it's a variant, a critical adaptation, so reducing Rhen and Harper to just their motif is a bit mean. I honestly really love A Curse. I might be biased against it after months of learning about the og tale inside and out.

Meanwhile, Grey and Lia Mara occupy spaces of their own. Academic deformation or thesis post-trauma stress, I'm trying to think but I can't find the tale-type they'd belong too. They're not fairy tale archetypes developped into Fantasy characters, they are Fantasy characters exploring their own as-of-yet-unwritten story (all the stories have been told, but also, all the stories are still waiting to be told).

They are honestly fascinating, the guard turned long lost heir and the princess discarded who turns out to be the real power. There's so much anguish in them. So much self-sacrificing, self-effacing. Gods I should have included the book in my thesis, I could have drawn parallels between Rhen stuck in his role of Beast and Lia Mara in her role as the spare, Harper as the Beauty and Grey as the unwilling Prince... Dammit I'm having ideas now. Oh, well, let's keep them for when I'll give the PhD a try. Some years down the line.
