Sakurai x Taniguchi x Fu-kuyama Interview // NewType November 2008
Tumblr media
--Congratulations on the completion of "Code Geass". When did the thought "It's ended" first occur to you, Director Taniguchi?
Taniguchi: That's a difficult question. Visually, that would be after the V-edit (Video Editing) ended, because after that you can no longer do anything about it. However, in terms of the end [of Code Geass] as a project, I really don't know.
Tumblr media
--How did the final recording session go?
Taniguchi: It was difficult for me to control myself, psychologically. Since it was the final recording session, I kept thinking "This is the end", but in terms of the actual work, I had to hold on for a little while longer.
Fu-kuyama: I was thinking "Let's record our lines in high spirits!", but that only lasted until episode 24. The final recording session was...... This might be the first out of all my works so far in which I completed the final episode without putting too much effort into it. I took it all calmly.
Sakurai: I was in a spiritual state of nothingness. More than two years have passed between the recording of the first episode and the final episode. To be involved in a project for so long is something of a rarity these days, and because of that I was also overwhelmed with feelings. Still, "Code Geass", true to its nature, ended in a cool way.
Fu-kuyama: I think the VA with the most mixed feelings when it comes to the last episode of Code Geass might very well be Hoshi Souichirou, Gino's VA. To tell you the truth, I received a phone call on the night before the recording for the final episode. I wondered who it was... and it turned out to be Hoshi-san.
Sakurai: He called me, too.
Fu-kuyama: When I answered the call, all he said was "Tomorrow's the final episode, isn't it... do your best*." (laugh) [*ganbattene]
Sakurai: He said "Do your best" to me, too. I guess he was especially attached to this show.
Taniguchi: (laugh) It's up to everyone how they want to interpret the ending, I don't mind, but for me, it was a Happy Ending.
Fu-kuyama: I, too, think it was a happier ending than expected.
Sakurai: As for me... I'm looking at things from the viewpoint of Suzaku's VA, of course, but I've been watching the show as just another audience, too. That might be why the ending was painful for me.
Tumblr media
--Was the final episode something you thought of from the very beginning?
Taniguchi: Yes. The ending was decided upon beforehand. Although it was eventually cut, I actually had [Okouchi] write a script for episode 1, one which began with the scene of Suzaku attempting to kill Lelouch. I'm talking about episode 1 of the previous series, not R2.
Tumblr media
--The relationship between Lelouch and Suzaku described in these 50 episodes has seen a lot of ups and downs. They've shot at each other with guns, tried to kill each other, stepped on the other's face after he humbled himself by getting on his knees......
Taniguchi: From my point of view, Lelouch and Suzaku's relationship in the previous series did not go beyond that of reunited childhood friends. It wasn't "friendship" -- they were playing at a "make-believe friendship". With R2, my intention was to show how it turned into "friendship" in the truest sense of the word. ......As for the part with the kneeling, if Lelouch hadn't done that, he might have been killed by Suzaku, and Suzaku, had he not stepped on Lelouch's face, would probably not have been able to control his rage.
Tumblr media
--Basically, it was necessary to go that far* for Lelouch and Suzaku to be able to rebuild their bonds. [*kneeling + stepping on face]
Taniguchi: It's a matter of definition, but for me, the relationship between "good friends", to put it bluntly, is one in which "they are able to change each other's soiled underwear even when they've become doddering geezers".*
Fu-kuyama: Though in my opinion, that's already crossed the line into "love" territory (laugh).
[*This line sparked an outbreak of "Eeewwww, Taniguchi", "Taniguchi's definition of friendship sets the bar too high" and "...Does Taniguchi actually have such friends?" on 2ch]
Tumblr media
--Once again: what kind of show was "Code Geass" to all of you?
Sakurai: "Code Geass" was a stimulating piece of work, in my opinion. It suddenly appeared and swiftly took society by storm before facing its end in style. I look forward to everyone's reactions after the final episode. I'm sure all of us would like to see more of this type of original anime.
Taniguchi: I would be delighted if the viewers accepted [this show] with that thought in mind. When we first started "Code Geass", there was this sense of danger that if we don't do our best now original anime will die out completely. The way things are, there will eventually only be anime adapted from manga, games and light novels. For the sake of creating an entertaining original anime, we concentrated what skills we had and tried tacking them on little by little during the creation process. Of course, in "R2" we had to continue being aggressive. I continued working on this show feeling like a challenger. It was an enlightening experience!
Sakurai: These days, there are a lot of anime with tactical gimmicks, but "Code Geass" was strategically elaborate and daring, and was very much entertaining in a way other anime weren't. We, as members of the cast, were happy to have been part of its creation.
Fu-kuyama: They kept an iron-fisted control over the information given to us, too. We never knew what was going to happen next, not until we received the script.
Taniguchi: Once the episode directors, the animators and the VAs find out what's going to happen ahead of time, they tend to give their performances working backwards from the end result. There are times when working backwards actually makes it better, but if there is a continuous chain of turning points in the story, there are times when you subconsciously save your strength. I was afraid that would happen.
Fu-kuyama: I didn't want to know what was going to happen next. Finding out beforehand means I'll have to set the bar higher for myself, you see (laugh).
Tumblr media
--Lelouch was a devil of a role to play, having to face some kind of trial every single time, huh.
Fu-kuyama: Lelouch's role is, to put it simply, the chief villain, and Suzaku is the hero. Watching Lelouch use his Geass and prepare the legwork of his strategies with all his heart and soul makes you feel like pitying him.
Taniguchi: Really, I had no idea creating an evil organization of the likes of "Shocker" [*from Kamen Rider] could be so much work (laugh). It's a lot of effort, truly. Here you are, desperately planning some kind of gambit, and "BAM!", the hero appears and everything goes to pieces.
Fu-kuyama: "Code Geass" is a story seen from the side of an evil organization, isn't it? If you were to see the world through a different point of view, a different kind of logic would come into focus. For example, if you were to consider Marianne and Emperor Charles's actions from their point of view, nobody would be able to say they were wrong.
Taniguchi: If you were to rewatch "Code Geass" with the camera on Suzaku's side, Lelouch would be an absolute evil (laugh).
Sakurai: Who's on the side of justice? Who's evil? It all depends on your position and point of view. Telling the story in this manner was very interesting.
Fu-kuyama: I realized that the viewers don't work according to the logic of "justice" and "evil" when choosing which characters to empathize with.
Tumblr media
--Lastly, I'd like to ask each of you which episode left the biggest impression.
Fu-kuyama: It has to be episode 9 of "R2" for me. The conversation when Lelouch snatched Tenshi-sama away from Xingke -- in response to "You devil--!!", Lelouch answers "Ho, is that so?". I thought it was a fantastic exchange.
Sakurai: As for me, it's the final episode of "R2". It lingers on in your heart. The characters' resolve came through loud and clear, and it really got to me.
Taniguchi: All the episodes are important to me, so I can't choose one. If I had to say something... at the end of the recording session of the final episode, the staff, on their own initiative, gave out flowers to all of the cast members. I was happy to see that "Code Geass" has its own special place in the hearts of the staff and cast who have been involved [in the project] for so long. Thank you all for the hard work!
All: Thank you for the hard work!!

The sight of hundreds of European Union flags at the Last Night of the Proms has prompted outrage from Brexiters and a call for the BBC to investigate.
Those waving the EU flag in the Royal Albert Hall appeared to outnumber those waving the union flag at the event, which is usually a patriotic display, following a campaign by pro-Europeans.
The spectacle of so many EU flags being waved as the hall belted out Rule, Britannia! provoked disgust from leading Eurosceptics.
Harvey Proctor, a former Conservative MP, said it was a “disgraceful” display and called for an inquiry by the BBC, which organises and broadcasts the Proms.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said: “BBC must investigate how so many EU flags were waved & on display at The Last Night of the Proms. Disgraceful & misguided BBC messing up a British tradition; a political gesture which would make Sir Henry Wood turn in his grave. Utterly vulgar & wrong. Rule Britannia, not Rule EU!”
Isabel Oakeshott, the journalist and rightwing commentator, also posted on X, saying: “The Last Night of the Proms appears to be a seething mass of remainers. Can’t wait for Rule Britannia.”
Tumblr media
Nile Gardiner, a former aide to Margaret Thatcher and a contributor to the Daily Telegraph, posted: “Ironic to see some of the audience at The Last Night of the Proms waving EU flags while singing Rule Britannia. Rule Britannia represents freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination, all absent in the European Union. Thank God for Brexit.”
The spectacle was hailed as a success by a pro-European group of music lovers called Thank EU For The Music who organised the display and said they handed out thousands of EU flags outside the Albert Hall.
In a Facebook post, it said the the display sent a “powerful signal to the world that Britain wants back IN!”
In an open letter to Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general, the group said the stunt was a demonstration against Brexit.
“Tens of thousands of music lovers have taken our free European flags into the Royal Albert Hall for each Last Night of the Proms in solidarity with musicians who feel (like countless others) the destructive impact of Britain’s recent isolation from Europe,” it said.
Tumblr media
It said it was keen to emphasis the “European and internationalist values of art and culture”.
The letter added: “We appreciate that the BBC strives to avoid controversy at all costs, but would gently point out that in doing so you might on occasion have chosen reticence rather than objectivity with regards to editorial policy on Brexit matters.
“I’m sure it cannot have escaped your attention that the artistic endeavours on stage now happen despite, not because of, the limitations that Britain’s departure from the European Union have imposed on the creative industries.”
Saturday’s Last Night of the Proms was the first full event since before the pandemic. Last year’s event was cancelled following the death of the queen.

"National Geographic published this map, quite correctly, in 1947."
h/t Asia-Pacific Community for Palestine
Via Occupy Wall Street. They can occupy my ass so I can shit them out.
This is a map of the proposed UN partition in 1947, one Zionists accepted and Arabs rejected. Had it been put in effect there would have been no war, no displacement, no Nakba. But Arabs, in their chauvinistic, neo-imperialist entitlement, could not allow any minority the least bit of autonomy, so instead they tried to drive the Jews into the sea. When all was over, there were no Jews remaining, none whatsoever, in those sections of Mandatory Palestine controlled by Arabs.
Yes, on the map here the region is called “Palestine”, because that is the name the British colonizers gave it when they cobbled together three Ottoman sancaklar. There was no real concept of a Palestinian national identity, certainly not one that had permeated into the mass consciousness, until over a decade after Israel’s founding. Israel *is* Palestine decolonized. It was Arabs who received arms assistance from Britain and France, not the Zionists. Will Occupy Wall Street start singing “Hail, Britannia” now, too?
And of all days to post this: on one when militants from Ghaza have infiltrated Israel to butcher, rape, and kidnap hundreds of Israeli civilians (the equivalent of 30,000 Americans dead), Occupy Wall Street decides to delegitimize the only source of Jewish self-determination, self-defense, and liberation in the world. Occupy Wall Street repugnantly stands with Hamas. It is not progressive, it is a hive of preening, vicious, bigoted narcissists who should be shamed for this every day for the rest of their lives.

Disaster has struck! A silver-colored imitation of God Kuwagata has taken control of King-Ohger! Confusion, joyfulness, and now fear has overtaken the people of Shugoddam as Gira's reputation tanks once more. Racles's machinations and the sudden aggression of God Scorpion have now completely solidified Gira's image as an insurrectionist. Now yet more baffled than ever before, Gira stands by himself in the night air...
Hoohoohoooooo boy, Spoilers, I guess...
-"OH GOD, I'M A REAL CRIMINAL NOW!?"
-From one CGI shot to another.
-"Those vile Bugnarok!"
-Hail Britannia, huh Racles?
-He doesn't need the other royals anymore.
-I have to give Racles credit, he's a legitimately scary villain.
-Oh goddammit Kaguragi, what're you trying now?
-Rita's just like "This is between you two, I'm just arbitration".
-Doctor of Engineering vs. Doctor of Medicine.
-Oh hello, Dezzy. Kamji.
-Gundajim?
-Ant!
-The manhunt begins.
-Kogane's a good friend.
-I'm assuming Gundy here's our second general.
-Man... there's something so cruel about hearing a kid admit he can't see a Red get out of this one.
-I see Kaguragi's kindness isn't just limited to his subjects.
-The girlies are fightingggg!
-Yanma doesn't need chairs.
-Oooooh... Parents, eh?
-Kami Ikari...
-It was never natural.
-That's a whole ton of locusts!
-What happened that day, fifteen years ago, Himeno Ran will never forget. After all... it was the day her mother and father died. In the haze of fire throughout Fraputal, medics and grieving families hurriedly ran through the shaking hall. Off to the side, by a fallen pillar and a bouquet of flowers, a young blonde-haired girl was tending to a wounded maid, her eyes occasionally glancing over to her parents. Luminaries of the world, both as doctors and rulers. It was only natural she'd do as they ask. ...perhaps by that same logic, it was only natural they'd not live to see the end of the disaster. As Mama and Papa writhed out their last breath, the hooded figure walked off. She was certain she saw them sneer as they latched onto the Shugod.
-Scorpion venom.
-Revenge ain't gonna help them now.
-"You know what, yeah! I wouldn't know!"
-"Keep working. We're taking out this trash."
-Oh fuck, Kabutan.
-Ooogh
-Beeg Bugs
-"Move it, maggots!"
Yanma: Where the FUCK is he?! Himeno: How should I know!? If Gira had any sense, he'd be out of Shugoddam! Gira: Sasoriiiiinne!
-"Shut up, you stupid bitch! Hi-yah!" (smack)
-They wouldn't tell him :<
-Nice dodge!
-Teamwork~!
-Yaaaay!
-Yanma :)
-Besties~!
-"Huh? ...HUH?!"
-"You leave me out of this, Geeks of Evil!"
-The Gods have come back~!
-Back to kicking ass we go!
-Here comes the queen!
-The sheer audacity Himeno has is absolutely admirable.
-"Oh hey Sasorinne, what's up?"
-Time for the queen to take center stage.
-For a terrifying gigantic robot scorpion, Sasorinne is quite adorable.
-"Soooo... are you dating~?"
-Can't ask for a better wingwoman than the queen.
-Let's do it!
-God Scorpion!
-Scorpi?
-Hm. Good for them.
-We did it!
-Rest in peace, Gundajim. You were kinda funny, and your salute shall not go unappreciated.
-Thank you :)
-Ahem, oh noooooo! He's gooooone!
-Oh well, at least we're better friends now :)
-Oh no
-Rita bby pls
-So like
-Is Racles gonna slaughter all of these children if Gira doesn't do the duel? That's pretty low, even for him.
-Oh shit, Racles!
-SIlver Bug~!
-Ohkuwgata Ohger.
-He really wants you to know he's the king, huh?

Druidism and Asatru¿: Roots Deeper than the Earth Itself.
Though at first it may be difficult to believe, Druidism/Druidry and Asatru go hand in hand. Though terminology differs, much of what we understand as Druidism can be found not only within the Norse faith along with various Caledonian/Celtic faiths, but within similar Indo-European faiths as well, dating back thousands of years.
From the Spring Equinox to the Winter Solstice, these cosmic events have held significance for tribes all across the world since long before written history, and many of their monuments to the solar bodies that inhabit the night sky can still be found to this day. The stars, grass underfoot, all the mysteries of the cosmos and existence itself brought forth the Druidic faith, the first scientists; whose influence spanned nations. Though the common image of a Druid is that of a bearded man clad in long white robes, this portrayal comes to us from the Romans in their observation of the Celtic people, and only shows a portion of what Druidism once was.
Celtic Druidism as it is understood today is the coalescence of various Druidic faiths, including those of Anglo-Saxon tribes. Many Celtic, and Vikine tribes share their ancestry with that of the Anglo-Saxons, a cultural identity born from interactions with Germanic tribes. These Pagan Anglo-Saxon tribes worshipped Gods still referenced in modern Paganism, such as Ēostre and Wotan, who are closely related theologically to much earlier Proto-Indo-European Gods. Likewise, the Gods and Goddesses of Druidic faith, such as Brigid and Badb, were found to have been worshipped among these tribes, likely stemming from the same Proto-Indo-European faiths which had inspired people to build monuments to the stars.
The birth of Asatru (Modern) was brought about in the early days of the Pagan revival, and deals specifically with Forn Sidr (Traditional) which is the first name given to the Norse faiths by Normani tribes. These tribes, along with the Galli (Early Gaulish Nomadic peoples) would make their name as fierce warriors during the Roman Eras, fighting as mercenaries in countless battles across Britannia, and eventually settling in Caledonia, a Tribal Confederacy located in what is now North Britain, equating to Scotland. Here alongside a number of Brittonic, Milesian Scot, and Anglo-Saxon tribes, (as well as later being joined by some Scandinavian tribes from the far North) they would be observed feasting, drinking, and hailing the deities of their faiths by Saint Bede during the eighth century, giving the world its very first written account of the Druidic faiths that had existed for so many centuries prior.
During its revival, the Norse faith would go through a sort of coalescence of its own, combining the beliefs of various Normani tribes in order to give rise to what we know today as Asatru. A reflection of the Northern tribes, the Sagas and Edda's that have helped form the faith are part of a much greater story, a story that continues to unfold even now as our understanding of history grows.

i bestow upon thee the ultimate ender of the lelouch vs light battle:
Tumblr media
lelouch wins.
Yes. Jut YES.
This is not even a debate, let alone a comparison, come on now. I've watched Death Note and Code Geass and Light Yagami just can't compare to the magnificence of Lelouch vi Britannia.
While they do have some common factors - such as being highly intelligent, attractive and ambitious individuals - it all feels hollow and shallow because at their core, Light and Lelouch are two very different people.
I won't lie, it was beyond entertaining to watch Light Yagami and his schemes (all hail the potato chip scene) but deep down he was nothing more than a self obsessed maniac who cared about no one other than himself. He had the world in the palm of his hand but he lost it just as easily.
Lelouch meanwhile... Gosh. I could talk about him for ages. For a bloody eternity. He's such a beautifully multilayered character that it just takes my breath away.
He is flat out just not a good person. He has messed up, he has gotten hundreds of people killed, he has allowed for his pride to take over when he really should have known better and yet.
And yet despite my upper statement, he has a good heart. A soft heart. A gentle heart. A heart that bleeds for the people that he cares for, a heart that weeps for every single person that he lost and then some. He'll fool you into thinking that he's the most vile creature on the planet if it means that you will stay alive and well. Lelouch has goals and ambitions that are so much more than his ego and pride.
While on the surface Light appears to have the same motives, if you bother to look deeper you just know that it's not the case.
Besides, at the end of the day, even if you do like Light more, you can't deny that Lelouch just did it better. He actually accomplished his goals and set the world straight before he croaked. It's not even fair to compare the two because Lelouch would wipe Light away like a god damn fly.
All hail Lelouch vi Britannia.
