Naples (2): Neapolis or Nablus?

To prepare for our trip we watched Clive Myrie's good-humoured BBC series on Italy. 

The episode on Naples, which aired just before we travelled, portrayed the city as a glorious melting pot brimming with history and conviviality, the home of pizza and the beating heart of the multicultural south.

Workshops in picturesque alleyways were "fast becoming one of the city's most exciting creative hubs", Myrie told us.

I'd also read Gomorrah by the investigative journalist Roberto Saviano, which depicts Naples and its region as a crime-ridden hellhole.

I kept those contrasting images vivid in my mind by calling the first Neapolis and the second Nablus (Naples and the impoverished West Bank city, both ancient Greek settlements, share a common etymology.)

Outside the airport terminal, we followed signs for the buses.  I wasn't completely sold on that mode of transport: the Alibus website showed pictures of long lines of backpackers waiting to board under a hot sun, which did not bode well for the frequency of the service.  On the other hand, the fare was cheap (€5) and as the night had fallen we were at little risk from sunstroke.

On our way to the bus stop, a man offered to drive us to the city centre, along with a few fellow tourists, for €5 each.  Being accosted and directed towards a collective taxi was more evocative of Nablus than Neapolis, but we decided to take a chance.

The minivan was comfortable and delivered us to Piazza Garibaldi in 20 minutes.  This was Neapolis after all.  The driver even pointed the way towards our hotel.

Like most central squares in European cities, the Piazza Garibaldi features vast open spaces, far-reaching transport links and the statue of a national hero.  But while similar urban foci across the Mediterranean world are usually alive with crowds in the evening, the piazza offered nothing but empty gloom.

The main road along the Centro Storico was not much more animated.  A fast-food joint was open.  A few shadows shuffled past.  After 300m we turned into ramshackle lanes strewn with refuse: definitely Nablus.

I wondered if we might have got lost.  How could such a slum attract tourists?  But Google Maps does not lie: we found our hotel tucked away behind a metal door.

"Is there a place where we can eat around here?"

My tentative query was met by a confident response. "Pizzeria del Popolo: 300m away, just across Piazza Mercato," the young woman at the reception said.

The piazza in question would make a perfect location for a brutalist dystopia.  Lined on one side by a housing block that shows every sign of having been built with what Roberto Saviano calls "Camorra cement", it is dominated by an installation shaped like a giant dog turd. Not a soul was stirring.

We found our restaurant, as discreetly positioned as our hotel, at the bottom of the housing block.  Once inside, the atmosphere changed.

Maybe that's what happy families do in Naples in the evening: they go to the pizzeria instead of hanging out in squares.  A 31st birthday was being celebrated at one table. It was vibrant and proper – none of the boozy ruckus such events occasion in Britain.

My only quibble was the lack of wine: real Neapolitans, it seems, wash down their food with beer.  But they sure can do pizza here: unctuous dough and fresh ingredients for €8 - a ridiculously small price to pay for a taste of Neapolis in the middle of Nablus.

Dopo il successo delle precedenti edizioni, che hanno riscosso ampio consenso tra gli utenti e i cittadini, sarà possibile presentare istanza per il rilascio del voucher Catania TU GO 2024-25 dalle ore 10:00 di domani fino alle ore 14:00 di lunedì 27 maggio 2024, o fino al raggiungimento del limite massimo di 4502 abbonamenti. L'abbonamento digitale integrato avrà validità dal 01 giugno 2024 al 31 maggio 2025. È importante notare che non possono presentare istanza i possessori dell'abbonamento integrato Catania Tu Go con scadenza al 31/12/2024. Con questo abbonamento, gli utenti avranno accesso ai servizi della metropolitana Fce e delle linee Amts (escluse le linee Alibus e 524S), nonché l'opportunità di usufruire gratuitamente della rete dei parcheggi scambiatori gestiti da Amts (Due Obelischi, Nesima). Per ottenere il voucher, sarà necessario procedere tramite la piattaforma Catania Semplice e acquisirlo attraverso l'App Fce. Il sindaco Enrico Trantino e l'assessore alle Politiche Comunitarie, Sergio Parisi, hanno commentato: "Siamo lieti di soddisfare le legittime aspettative dei cittadini, offrendo un servizio estremamente conveniente che promuove attivamente l'utilizzo del trasporto pubblico, contribuendo così a migliorare la mobilità urbana nel rispetto dell'ambiente. Catania Tu-Go, altri 4400 abbonamenti per viaggiare un anno su bus e metro con soli 20 euro annui. A Catania sono stati aperti ieri i termini per la sottoscrizione on line di altri 4400 nuovi abbonamenti annuali a 20 euro l'anno, destinati solo ai nuovi fruitori che vogliono utilizzare i mezzi pubblici di trasporto ( bus e metro, senza limiti di corse, ad esclusione delle linee Amts Alibus e 524) e per l'accesso gratuito ai parcheggi scambiatori di via Due Obelischi e Nesima. Lo ha stabilito la giunta Trantino che grazie ad una delibera proposta dell'assessore alle politiche comunitarie Sergio Parisi, ha reperito i fondi variando il bilancio di previsione e incrementando le risorse in entrata, attingendo ai residui dei fondi del Pon Metro 2014-20, con un abbattimento dei costi degli abbonamenti del 95% e la gratuità totale per i disabili. Un'iniziativa di mobilità sostenibile integrata, denominata Catania Tu-Go, che nei due anni precedenti ha registrato l'adesione di quasi 18mila utenti del trasporto pubblico a Catania. È possibile richiedere l'emissione del Voucher attraverso la piattaforma "Catania Semplice", all'interno del portale del Comune di Catania fino alle ore 14 del 18 dicembre. L'utente, dopo aver effettuato l'accesso attraverso Spid o Cid, potrà procedere alla richiesta per se o per altre persone. All'istanza occorre allegare una copia del documento di identità in corso di validità del richiedente. Per completare la procedura, 48 ore dopo aver fatto la richiesta attraverso la piattaforma "Catania Semplice", bisogna acquistare digitalmente l'abbonamento per un anno previo pagamento di soli 20 euro, attraverso l'App ufficiale Fce Catania, aggiornata all'ultima versione disponibile gratuitamente sia per Ios che per Android sui rispettivi store digitali. «Un provvedimento che arriva giusto in tempo nel periodo pre natalizio - hanno detto il sindaco Trantino e l'assessore Parisi - mirato ulteriormente a incrementare l'utilizzo del trasporto pubblico, su ferro o su gomma, anziché quello privato, sulla scia di uno straordinario successo già registrato di una concreta misura di sostegno della mobilità sostenibile che ha visto Catania essere la prima città in Italia a spendere in questo modo intelligente le risorse comunitarie del Pon Metro, in sinergia all'agenzia nazionale per i fondi di coesione e su base locale con Fce e Amts. Athens to Naples - Naples, Italy

Doug was a little concerned about our ticket to Naples, so we made plans to arrive at the airport in Athens about 3 hours ahead of our departure time. We took the metro (subway) from Syntagma Square and, with the help of a couple of people, we managed to make it to the airport. Fortunately, we had no problems with our tickets and we made it through security with ease. Managed to get a bit to eat and find our gate. We had a great flight into Naples.

When we arrived in Naples, we did not have to go through any entry checkpoints. So we followed the signs and found the Alibus....which our host told us to take to get to our Airbnb. We got on the bus, tried to ask the driver if this bus was going to Garibaldi. He just indicated to me to move a bit, so that he could shut the door, and we were off! Luckily, we arrived at the Central Train Station and Garibaldi Plaza was across the street. We still had an hour before our check-in time, so we decided to find a market to grab some things for dinner tonight. This proved to be a harder task than we thought. Finally, we found a tiny little store with a few things that appealed to us. We worked our way toward our Airbnb. Just before we got to the address, we noticed a street market down an alley. We went over and found a few more items that looked good. Then we found out that our apartment was just around the building from this market. I didn’t take a picture of the door to the building we are in, but it was different from anyplace I had ever been before. I will take a picture and post it later. We entered the lobby of our building and found the lift. Due to the fact that we had backpacks on, we barely fit into the lift! We finally maneuvered ourselves so that the lift doors would close and up we went to the fifth floor. When we arrived on the fifth floor, a different door opened for us to exit - of course, our backs were to this door and there wasn’t enough room for us to turn around to walk out! So we had to back out of the lift. Rookie move, next time we figure out where the exit door is when we get on a lift! Anyway, we climbed a few more stairs and arrived at the door to our unit. Our host was there to greet us, he made sure we could get into our apartment and that we had everything we needed. Very sweet - a bottle of wine and a few snacks had been left in the apartment for us. As you can see from the pictures below, this is a spacious and bright place. Awesome views of the historic region of Naples from our windows.

Cómo llegar a Nápoles

Al aeropuerto se lo conoce como “Capodichino” aunque su nombre oficial es “Ugo Niutta” (NAP).

Está relativamente cerca del centro de la ciudad, y para llegar al alojamiento tenemos dos opciones:

BUS "ALIBUS" (5€/pax)

Sale desde la terminal 1 y hace tres paradas, aunque a nosotras nos interesa la primera (Piazza Garibaldi). Funciona todos los días entre las 5.45am y las 11.20pm cada 10 o 15 minutos, y el trayecto dura unos 20 minutos aproximadamente hasta la Piazza Garibaldi.

El billete del Alibus cuesta 5€ y se puede comprar directamente al conductor del bus o en la taquilla de la terminal de buses dentro del aeropuerto. El billete tiene una duración de 90 minutos (se puede combinar con otros buses para llegar al alojamiento, pero creo que es mejor a pie o en metro).

Catania: Si rinnova e si amplia l’iniziativa “Catania-Tu Go”, un abbonamento integrato Metro-Bus a soli 20 euro

Catania: Si rinnova e si amplia l’iniziativa “Catania-Tu Go”, un abbonamento integrato Metro-Bus a soli 20 euro. Con una platea di destinatari ancora più ampia, varrà anche per tutto il 2023 e fino a maggio 2024 l’iniziativa Catania Tu Go, ovvero l’abbonamento integrato per autobus e Metro al costo agevolato di appena 20 euro all’anno, a fronte di un valore commerciale di 520 euro. Lo ha stabilito una delibera del Commissario Straordinario del Comune di Catania Piero Mattei riprendendo l’iniziativa varata con successo lo scorso anno dall’Amministrazione Comunale, sulla base di un utilizzo dei fondi comunitari del Pon Metro, opportunamente rimodulati al fine di incentivare i cittadini all’utilizzo dei mezzi di trasporto pubblico anziché del mezzo privato e contribuire ridurre le emissioni di Co2 nell’aria, oltre a conseguire consistenti risparmi per le spese di carburante. Il programma varato dalla Direzione Politiche Comunitarie diretto da Fabio Finocchiaro e dal titolare del servizio per la transizione green Paolo Di Caro, in collaborazione con Amts ed Fce, prevede un costo invariato per i cittadini con titoli di viaggio validi tredici mesi, a partire dal 1 maggio e fino al 31 maggio 2024, al costo pressoché simbolico di 1,53 euro al mese. Per l’anno 2023 sarà garantito un numero totale di 7.540 abbonamenti annuali integrati, 1.740 in più rispetto a quelli previsti per il 2022 (5.800). Inoltre, in caso di esaurimento del numero di abbonamenti AMTS e FCE hanno concordato l’emissione di ulteriori 2.500, per un totale di 10.040 abbonamenti per il 2023, compresi i disabili che viaggiano gratuitamente, a differenza degli 8.000 programmati per il 2022. L’abbonamento è valido per tutte le corse metro e bus (Alibus e linea 524S esclusi) e il parcheggio Nesima e Due Obelischi. L’investimento complessivo del Comune per abbattere di oltre il 95% il costo degli abbonamenti integrati Metro-Fce, è di 7,5 milioni di euro. Sfruttando i benefici offerti dalle tecnologie digitali, le modalità di perfezionamento degli abbonamenti diventano ancora più semplificate, accessibili e intuitive. Per ottenere l’abbonamento è necessario fare una richiesta di Voucher, a partire dalle ore 10,00 del 31 marzo 2023, attraverso la piattaforma Catania Semplice nel sito del Comune di Catania, accedendo tramite SPID o CIE, per poi acquisire l’abbonamento digitale previo pagamento di 20,00 euro a mezzo di App FCE, scaricabile gratuitamente dai dispositivi IOS. (versione IOS 10 e superiori a partire da IPhone 7) e Android (versione Android 8 e superiori sui modelli smartphone maggiormente diffusi) nei rispettivi store. Per completare la procedura, 48 ore dopo aver fatto la richiesta attraverso la piattaforma Catania Semplice, sarà possibile acquisire digitalmente l’abbonamento previo pagamento di €20,00 attraverso l’App gratuita FCE Catania. Dopo aver installato sul dispositivo mobile l’applicazione FCE Catania sarà necessario registrarsi per creare il proprio account compilando tutti i campi obbligatori contrassegnati dal simbolo (*); confermare l’account all’indirizzo e-mail indicato in fase di registrazione. Il titolo di viaggio sarà disponibile nella sezione Acquista. L’utente dovrà selezionare Dati personali - Profilo Cliente scegliere Profilo Standard e caricare i documenti richiesti in Info Documenti (documento di identità e fototessera) in formato digitale. She’s paralyzed from the waist down after an event that she rarely speaks about and uses a wheelchair of her own design that allows her to move around freely while also granting her access to all of her hacking tools and computer. Snarky and quick thinking, she’s gotten Shintaro out of some tight spots even before they formed the group. Kaido is her closest thing to family she has although the two are not related by blood. No one in the group knows her real name and why she chooses to hide behind an alias.

Villámgyorsan megtaláltuk az Alibus shuttlet a reptér környékén ólálkodó taxishiénák személyében, mindegyik lármásan gesztikulálva eskūdözött a másik szavába vágva, hogy ő az igazi Alibusz, a kolléga egy imposztor. De mi Budapesten szocializálódtunk, fūrkészni meg portyázni kezdtūnk, mire a reptér másik felén egy újabb  rosszarcú kezdett eskūdözni, hogy ő is Alibusz, amit el is hittūnk, mert tényleg volt busza, amin azt írta, hogy Alibus. 5 pénzért felszálltunk az ūres buszra, bár továbbra is kissé gyanakodva (ez a busz két személlyel közlekedik?!!!). A busz elindult, hogy aztán a következő megállóban ácsorgó száztagú brigád is begyömöszölhesse magát. Helló, Nápoly! Huh, micsoda pukkanás! Hulló vakolat, graffitik, és nézd, ezek az arcok tényleg az erkélyen szárítják a fehérneműjūket, mint a filmeken. Aztán a buszsofőr tanácsa ellenére az első megállóban (Garibaldi, mi más) leszálltunk, mert az Ūgyvédem elfelejtette, hogy merre kell a házigazdánkkal találkozni, viszont tömegben nem tud gondolkodni. Aztán majdnem eltaposott minket egy autó, mert az olasz sofőrök (bár elképzelhetetlennek hangzik) a magyaroknál is nagyobb gecik.

Aztán az Ūgyvédemnek eszébe jutott a Margionne tér neve, erre meg metróra pattantunk volna, de a hájtek metró nem mūködött, több száz ember várta, hogy beengedjék. Közben a mozgásképtelen tömeget lejmosok fosztogatták, akik természetesen metrójegyre gyűjtöttek. Végūl beengedtek a metróba, mely szerintem annyira faszántos, hogy az ūgyvédem 1 napot kíván benne eltölteni (visszatérūnk).

A tulaj ūzent, h merre vagyunk, 10-ig tud ránk várni a Maggioren. Ekkor kezdett a Ūgyvédem pánikūzemmódra kapcsolni, én meg a google mapsre. Tudni kell, hogy a nőm annyira ūgyesen eltitkolta az úticélunk (érvényes az útleveled, Orki?), hogy én nekifogtam újratanulni a hébert abban a tudatban, hogy Izraelbe megyūnk. Aztán ott találtam magam egy középszar ivrit nyelvtudással Olaszországban, letolt gatyával, teljesen felkészūletlenūl (Nápoly az Szicília?), módfelett meglepve, mint vámpír a szentmisén. A Maggiorera eljutva végre leūlve sikerūlt kipihegni magunkat (miafaszér töltjūk az életūnket A-ból B-be való rohanással, babám), majd szemrevételezni a módfelett romos és koszos tèren őgyelgő meg kávézgató  helyieket meg az őket lejmoló szenegáli ékszerárust. Ekkor mondtam elhűlve, hogy lehetséges, hogy ezt a várost csak frikek lakják? Ami nem baj, mert legalább nem lógunk ki a tömegből, mint Pesten, ahol mindenki turistának néz.

Giacomo kitartóan nem akart felbukkanni, mire rátelefonáltunk, hogy már hahó, a téren várjuk, mire közölte, hogy ő is, sőt áááá, már lát minket, itt áll mellettūnk. Hát hogy bocsánat, hogy nem vett észre minket, ő böröndös turistákat várt, nagyon restelli. Ez a keskeny izé meg a Vágás, a várost kettészelő egyenes sikátor. Az meg a haverja kocsmája, benne egy Maradona oltár, abban meg Maradona igazi hajszála. Ez az aládúcolt épūlet meg a mi szállásunk, sorryforit. Megnyugtattam, hogy no problem, Budapest is tele van aládúcolt romokkal. (Folytatjuk)
