Aria/Godfrey - “ have you come to laugh at me in my miserable state? ”

"Laugh?" Godfrey's eyes were flint gleaming in the darkness, as he stepped into the light.

Declaring the Staffords bastards had been a misstep for Roderick: that much was evident. One had only to look at the rites of old Astaira, at even the queen's own styles before the conquest, to know this was not the true source of her power. Eilionora's elaborated titles were not like Roderick's: they were simple, and they were clear. Where Roderick's boasted divine appointment as the basis of his rule, hers noted somethng entirely different:

Her Grace, Eilionora of Astaira, the Seventh of her Name, by the Grace of the Guardians and of the People, Queen of All Astaira

Her style did not sing of glories bestowed by gods, by House, or by conquest: only the grace bestowed by spirits and by the people, themselves. Her style did not reflect whether she had entitlement to the use of the name Stafford, or even any connection to that House and, though she'd been a queen who had enriched the people and brightened their futures, she did not append any other tribute to her titles save that she was chosen by them, from amongst them, as an Astairan, herself. She had ruled the largest land in all the world: and still she said nothing of it. The important things, clearly, had already been stated.

Perhaps this truly was the land Amira had been seeking all her life: a land where the commons could rule. Yet, she had only ever come as a conqueror, a queen herself, and the bitter irony of it twisted into a strange smile upon the lips of her brother.

Roderick badly misjudged what mattered to the Astairans but, for Godfrey, that was all to the good. For Godfrey, that was an opportunity.

Aria was seated on a small divan overlooking a window, but he could see in her eyes that she had lately been weeping. He was little surprised, given the events of last night's ball. Godfrey did not move to share her long seat but, instead, he took a small wooden one and pulled it close to her position, seating himself there.

"I know what it is to feel powerless, madam," he said, skirting the usage of titles, princess or lady: the subject was too fraught, yet the walls were always listening. Better simply to find another mode of adress. "I could never laugh at such a thing."

He paused, sighed. "There is something I would have you know of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor: to him, any cost is worthy in the name of doing what he believes he must. In that much, I think, you and he may agree if, perhaps, less so in...other matters."

He paused, grey eyes darting towards the winter-strewn scene outside, ice spreading thin-veined like spiderwebs across the glass pane. "You may find His Majesty far easier to...understand looking at it from such an angle. And you may find that both he and his children become easier to navigate when better understood. Like many of us, when he is being...understood, he is also more inclined to...generosity.

"Perhaps, then, a study of his beliefs may prove...beneficial. My Eminence, Aleksander Royce, would doubtless prove overjoyed to teach you, and His Majesty, himself, would take it as a step in the right direction, I have little doubt...Though discretion might serve you, as well, to keep the people content. It is hard to say what loyal Astairans might make of such studies, and I'm sure we've none of us any wish to see chaos in the streets."

Or whether she might start to lose their loyalties if it were thought that she strayed too far into the Varmont camp and that loss would not suit Godfrey over much.

He could not yet ask her to trust him, when he'd not given her a reason to do so. After this, if she saw what he intended by it: a roadmap to better guiding and shaping and directing the Varmonts, themselves, she might be open to trusting him more, and if she was open to trusting him, perhaps some alliance between her cause and his could then be arranged. But first this step. Everything in its time.

Godfrey stood then, pulling the chair back to its original position. "No matter what happens to us, madam," he said, as he came to stand once more by the door. "I find we are only powerless so long as we allow ourselves to be."

ever since she was a young maiden, her charms seemed to be almost supernatural -- the way she could seemingly bend any man who looked her way to her will

it was no surprise when she set her sights upon roderick varmont that she became his queen soon after even though roderick already had a wife -- one with whom he was very much in love

but he still could not resist amira calainon and when she refused to go to his bed, except as his wife, roderick saw no reason why he could not have more than one

amira's ambitions did not stop there -- not only did she wish to become queen, but she meant for her children to rule roderick's empire one day

she plays the loving and adoring wife, but amira is the only one of roderick's wives who does not love him and never did

while amira is not a witch in the way most people might believe, she is well aware of the invisible supernatural realm where gods and monsters resides (she learned a great deal from her grandmother, who was, indeed, a witch)

knows the dangers but also is aware of the potential -- the allure of trapping a powerful being from the world beyond to use to her own advantage is a possibility she has not yet ruled out

at the end of the day, amira will do whatever it takes to get what she wants

she promised roderick a son when she married him -- but she was too late. both his first and third wife had children before she brought edmund into the world, but she believes her son has a claim as the eldest son born to his second wife

is constantly advocating for her son to her husband

also it is clear to everyone that she and marian will both stop at nothing to see their own son on the throne one day

may or may not have tried to kill marian's sons at one point

is fairly confident that she will eventually convince her husband to do things her way

if not, she may just call upon a demon to wipe all of them out ....

Who does Hunter Biden really work for? It's the question the media has been asking since Wednesday (14.05.2014), when it was revealed that the son of the US vice president joined the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings in April.

The former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski also sits on the company's board, but his photo only appeared on Burisma's website on Friday (16.05.2014), even though he joined the company in January. Then the president of Ukraine was still Viktor Yanukovych, with whom Kwasniewski had previously negotiated on behalf of the European Parliament to secure the release of imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The remaining board members include two Americans, two Cypriots, and four young Ukrainians, almost all of whom spent stints in Russia during their careers. The bulk of the company's management was replaced in 2013, and Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center in Kyiv, says this may indicate a change in ownership. "It simply wasn't reported," he told DW. He sees Burisma as a company with a lot of potential, as does Hennadi Kobal of the Kyiv Center of Oil and Gas "Newfolk": "They've secured good land for themselves."

Anyone wanting to know more about the company needs time. Burisma's modest website says the firm was founded in 2002 and grew to become "one of Ukraine's largest independent gas producers." There's no mention of the owners.

London-based PR firm Bell Pottinger handles Burisma's media relations, though they failed to respond to a DW request about Burisma. One of Bell Pottinger's founders, Lord Timothy Bell, once advised former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as well as the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin. Prominent customers in recent years include Asma Assad, the wife of the Syrian President, and the government of Belarus.

Yanukovych's gas baron

Ukrainian media reports about Burisma reveal an impenetrable web of companies, most of which are registered in Cyprus. One name, Mykola Slotshevski, appears more than once. The 47-year-old is thought to have been the original owner of the company - at least until recently.

Slotshevski has built a career in the oil and gas business since the early 1990s. In 2013, the Ukrainian news magazine "Korrespondent" estimated his fortune at about $238 million (173 million euros).

Slotshevski, known for having a fondness for British luxury cars like Rolls Royce and Bentley, was a member of the Ukrainian parliament, and headed the Environment Ministry between 2010 and 2012 before serving on the Security Council. He was well-connected in Yanukovych's government, ousted in February 2014.

Growth in gas

In late 2013, Slotshevski denied that he owned Burisma, and an employee in his office reported that he sold the company - but no evidence of this has come to light yet. Two oligarchs, Ihor Kolomojski and Viktor Pinchuk, have been named as the possible new owners. Kolomojski was appointed the new head of the regional administration in Dnipropetrovsk after the recent change of government in Kyiv. He is believed to wield more political influence than Pinchuk.

DW could not reach Kolomojski for comment about Burisma. Pinchuk refused to comment, but is said to have a good relationship with the Democratic Party in the US, and is also believed to have been a long time friend of former Polish President Kwasniewski.

According to expert estimates, Ukraine's own gas reserves only meet about a third - 15 to 20 billion cubic meters - of the country's gas needs. Most of the demand is covered by state-owned companies, but the private sector's share is growing, and there are believed to extensive gas deposits in the country's east. But in order to mine there, Ukraine needs the expertise of Western corporations.

US firms in Ukraine

The US has been active in Ukraine for some time. In 2007, the firm Vanco won a contract to extract gas from the Black Sea, a deal that was annulled by Tymoshenko after the firm passed on the rights to another company that included eastern Ukrainian and Russian business interests.

Yanukovych's government worked hard to win over US and multinational firms for oil and gas extraction in Ukraine. Kyiv signed a contract with the US-based Chevron at the end of 2013 to extract shale gas in the west of the country. Another deal with the energy giant ExxonMobil - for gas in the Black Sea area - was abandoned following opposition protests.

But the news about the appointment of Hunter Biden has sparked allegations of nepotism - not least because it was revealed just a few weeks after his father's visit to Kyiv on April 22. Neither Burisma or the US State Department responded to DW's requests for comment. White House spokesman Jay Carney would say only that Hunter Biden was a private citizen and that his job had no impact on US policy.

had they all joined together, they might not be in the situation there now find themselves in: eilionora had dispatched a portion of her armies to help defend an allied country across the sea, but after roderick varmont defeated them, he quickly turned his eyes to her own lands that had been left more vulnerable to his attack

a great siege was laid upon them in the capitol and while her people fought bravely, the defense did not hold. eilionora’s only solace that her youngest sister was able to escape and she prays siobhan was able to reach safety as roderick and his men believe she is dead

now eilionora finds herself a prisoner in her own castle – at least until she promises to form a union with roderick by agreeing to be his wife

roderick has won her country, but even he knows he will have an easier time of holding it, if eilionora can remain queen

eilionora is determined not to marry him, but she is reminded often by her sister that if they cannot save the guardians, an evil far greater than roderick varmont is coming …

he planned to run away with her, but he never got the chance – for both his father and brother succumbed to the plague that would ravage the land the following spring

as soon as roderick was crowned, he set his sights on the countries across the sea – he was determined to build himself an empire and prove to everyone that he would be a king, a conqueror, and an emperor

he remained very much in love with his first wife, but on his travels he met amira calainon who turned his head

falling under her charms, he was determined to have her, but she said she would only go to his bed as his wife

roderick saw no reason why he couldn’t adopt the old ways and have as many wives as he pleased – besides, he desired a son and heir of his own and so far was childless

he hastily married again, a year later, when he still had no children to speak of, despite having two healthy wives – this time taking a young lady who had come from a large family, herself, to wife hoping she would be the one to give him children

in the end, his first wife gave him his first child – a baby girl who they named guin; marian gave birth to a son, some months later and in the years that followed gave him two more children; amira gave him one son

it has never been clear who he means to leave his own throne to – guin is the eldest, arthur is the eldest boy, and edmund is the eldest boy born of his second wife (what no one really knows is that sebastian is the eldest trueborn son he has – arthur having been sired by marian’s secret lover .... and roderick's own uncle)

can be heartless and cruel, but there’s more to him than that – he was certainly once a much softer man, but his life has not been an easy one and his obsession for power has blinded him to his other priorities

his first wife eventually died – the doctors could not tell him why, but roderick knows it was because of a broken heart – she never stopped loving him and when he chose to take on other wives, he hurt her beyond repair

roderick has recently conquered astaira, which is the largest and most profitable kingdom thus far. to secure it, he means to take queen elinora as his wife but she is less than ready to give in to him and, in the meantime, he has both her and her youngest sister under house arrest

he does not believe in this place’s old religion and means to snuff out an already dying flame …. little does roderick know, that there is much more truth to the old tales than he gives them credit for, and that the true danger is now less than a world away ….

alek is literally that guy who really lied on his resume but still got the job

two years ago, his country was conquered by roderick varmont and where others of his land could only fear for their new future, aleksander knew that change could mean a new beginning for him

he had been a con man and a thief since he was a boy who ran away from the orphanage

he amassed a great fortune by lying and stealing, but eventually was found out and had been captured and on the way to prison when war broke out and in the chaos, he was able to escape

... only to find himself back in chains as a prisoner of war

but when godfrey calainon was wounded upon the battlefield and no physician was near at hand, alek said he could heal him

godfrey made a miraculous recovery and alek hailed as a hero -- after which godfrey promised that he would not allow for aleksander to be kept in chains as he had saved his life

alek knew that those who tended to be skeptical of things they could not understand, might suspect alek to be a sorcerer -- perhaps one who worshiped demons and gained his powers from them -- so when alek was asked how he saved godfrey's life, he told them that he was a holy man and that god often preformed miracles through him

he went back to court when godfrey and was presented to roderick, who quickly accepted alek into his own household where he employed him to head the church

the truth is, alek is NOT a man of faith and has been secretly studying religion on the DL to keep up the ruse ... he IS however, a man of science, and the "miracles" which he has occasionally come to preform have simply been modern medicine which no one in this land is familiar with

alek is charming, charismatic, outgoing, and friendly, but also rather self-centered, manipulative, and loyal only to himself

he reads people v well and knows what they want to hear -- he's very talented when it comes to seeming genuine, even when he's the furthest thing from it

he's also v flirty and he's got his eye on amira (the danger of flirting with the king's own wife appeals to him, not to mention she is both beautiful and mysterious) and eilinora who, while currently a captive, just might have the loyalty of her subjects to perhaps one day overthrow roderick and alek certainly wishes to be on her good side if and when that happens (plus she's gorgeous as well, which never hurt)

alek doesn't know how long this shall last, but until his time is up, he is enjoying fooling everyone around him (while helping himself to the sizable donations that are made to the church)

the king's uncle bartholomew seems to be the only person who doesn't quite trust him, so alek is keeping a watchful eye on him and is not above blackmail/tarnishing the hand's reputation to eliminate the potential treat
