Al Pitrelli (born September 26, 1962) is a #guitarist, best known for his work with the #bands Trans-Siberian Orchestra,Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Joe Lynn Turner, Asia and Savatage.

Al was a member of Megadeth from 2000–2002, replacing Marty Friedman. Dave Mustaine asked him to join the band after hearing good reviews from the then Megadeth drummerJimmy DeGrasso, who he played with during his days with Alice Cooper in the early 90s. Al only joined the band after an “audition” in front of a live crowd in Vancouver on January 16, 2000, 2 nights after Marty played his last show with the band, he was asked to play when it was 15 minutes before the show and was shocked as they never rehearsed. He was present during the recording of Rude Awakening, a live CD/DVD that was released in 2002. He also recorded The World Needs a Hero with the band. When Megadeth entered hiatus after Dave Mustaine injured his arm, Al re-joined Savatage on April 9, 2002 and also continued his work with TSO.

Con il titolo “La Rosa e il Rasoio: NO MGF”, mercoledì 6 dicembre, dalle 18.00 alle 20.00, sarà inaugurata a Roma, nella Casa del Municipio Roma I Centro, in Via G. Galilei 53, a cura di Antonio E.M. Giordano, una esposizione di opere realizzate da 17 artiste, di cultura, formazione e nazionalità diverse (Lorenzo Attolini Tomaso Binga Floriana Celani Lea Contestabile Sandra Di Coste Suida Dushi Yvonne Ekman Stefania Fabrizi Katherine Krizek Patrizia Molinari Annalisa Pitrelli Giulia Ripandelli Suzanne Santoro Barbara Schaefer Silvia Stucky Marilena Sutera Patrizia Trevisi) per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica internazionale contro il fenomeno delle mutilazioni genitali femminili (MGF) e sollecitare la lotta contro questa pratica disumana e la promozione delle iniziative volte all’abbandono di queste violazioni dei diritti della donna e delle bambine. L’UNICEF già nel 2009, sulla base del diritto internazionale, condannò la pratica delle mutilazioni genitali femminili come fenomeno diffuso in 29 nazioni dell’Africa, in paesi islamici d’Asia e tra immigrati in Europa, America e Australia - in quanto violazione dei diritti della donna e delle bambine alla salute fisica e psicologica, alle pari opportunità, alla tutela da violenze, abusi, torture o trattamenti inumani. Nel mondo milioni di donne convivono con una mutilazione genitale, praticata per lo più su bambine tra i 4 e i 14 anni ma anche con meno di un anno, come in Eritrea e nel Mali, o su neonate di pochi giorni (Yemen). Le pratiche dell’incisione o dell’asportazione, parziale o totale, dei genitali femminili esterni provocano alle bambine, poi ragazze, gravi rischi per la salute e conseguenze fisiche e psicologiche irreversibili. In alcuni Stati del Corno d’Africa ma anche in Egitto e Guinea l’incidenza del fenomeno arriva al 90% della popolazione femminile. In Europa, America e Australia, fra gli immigrati africani e asiatici sono praticate nell’illegalità e sono difficili da censire. Alla base delle MGF esistono pregiudizi di natura sessuale, sociologica, igienica, estetica, sanitaria, religiosa: “Soggiogare o ridurre la sessualità femminile”, “Iniziazione delle adolescenti all’età adulta, integrazione sociale delle giovani, mantenimento della coesione nella comunità”, “In alcune culture, i genitali femminili sono considerati portatori di infezioni e osceni”, “Si pensa a volte che la mutilazione favorisca la fertilità della donna e la sopravvivenza del bambino”, “Molti credono che questa pratica sia prevista da testi religiosi (Corano)”. Ad eseguire le mutilazioni sono essenzialmente “donne o levatrici e ostetriche ben pagate. Le ragazze che le subiscono sono private della capacità di decidere sulla propria salute riproduttiva. Le mutilazioni genitali sono umilianti e dolorose. Le bambine possono morire per shock emorragico o neurogenico (dolore e trauma) e per l’infezione (sepsi). L’evento è un trauma: molte bambine cadono in uno stato di shock per il dolore e il pianto è irrefrenabile. Conseguenze di lungo periodo sono: ascessi, calcoli e cisti, la crescita abnorme del tessuto cicatriziale, infezioni e ostruzioni croniche del tratto urinario e della pelvi, dolori nelle mestruazioni e nei rapporti sessuali, vulnerabilità all’infezione da HIV/AIDS, epatite e malattie veicolate dal sangue, infertilità, incontinenza, rischio di mortalità materna per travaglio chiuso o emorragia nel parto. Secondo l’OMS 130 milioni di donne nel mondo avrebbero subito MGF e ogni anno 3 milioni di bambine sono a rischio di subirne. Nel 2023 4,3 milioni di ragazze sono a rischio di MGF”. Gli artisti e artiste italiane e internazionali invitati dal curatore Antonio Giordano - dalle decane femministe Tomaso Binga (pseudonimo di Bianca Pucciarelli Menna) e Suzanne Santoro alle docenti di Accademie di Belle Arti (Floriana Celani, Lea Contestabile, Sandra Di Coste, Patrizia Molinari, Marilena Sutera), alla scultrice e musicista Yvonne Ekman alle Fiber artist Giulia Ripandelli

e Patrizia Trevisi alle statunitensi Barbara Schaefer, Katherine Krizek e Suzanne Santoro, alle romane ma con esperienze espositive internazionali Stefania Fabrizi e Silvia Stucky ai giovani emergenti (Lorenzo Attolini, Suida Dushi, Annalisa Pitrelli) - esprimono, con stili e tecniche eterogenee e miste (pittura tradizionale e digitale, grafica, scultura e fotografia), con allusioni, simbolismi e metafore, la solidarietà a questa condanna. stimolando la riflessione sul dolore e sulla necessità di proteggere i diritti delle bambine. Per Marie-Eve Gardère “Il pensiero è un mezzo di lotta sociale. Non che gli artisti presenti in questa mostra nelle loro opere facciano politica, sarebbe come dice Stendhal ‘volgare come un colpo di pistola durante un concerto’. La loro opera è invece tutta tesa verso questo resistere sempre, di cui parla Albert Camus. ‘Una tela può urlare’ (Picasso)”. Per Nicoletta Romanelli “La modestia e la virtù, la maternità e la verginità si sagomano sul corpo delle donne come gabbia che costringe e che annichilisce l’essenza pura, passionale e selvaggia del Femminino, per citare Jung. Le mutilazioni genitali femminili rappresentano una gravissima forma di violenza di genere, che necessita di essere conosciuta e riconosciuta in quanto portatrice di urla silenziose di donne sofferenti, la cui identità di donna è soffocata e repressa da mani femminili che armeggiano su di loro con strumenti rudimentali (frammenti di vetro, forbici, lamette…) in nome di una presunta sorellanza. Il rasoio recide la rosa nel suo fulgore perché si strappa alla bambina, che diventa donna attraverso lo stupro dell’anima, la sua essenza più intima e piena”. La mostra, allestita dall’Associazione Spartacus gruppo CentroInverso – Presidente Sandra Di Coste con il patrocinio del Municipio Roma I Centro - Roma Capitale e con il patrocinio dell’AEREC – Missione Futuro, resta aperta, con ingresso libero, fino al 19 dicembre dalle 9.00 alle 13.00 e dalle 14.00 alle 18.00 (chiuso mercoledì mattina). Jövőre új album kiadását tervezi a Savatage, ami vélhetően a banda utolsó anyaga lesz, ezzel szeretnének búcsút venni a rajongóktól.

A Savatage-főnök Jon Oliva megerősítette, hogy új zenéken dolgozik a kultikus csapat: „Ez a Savatage-lemez oda fog baszni, annyira jó lesz! Korábban elkövettem azt a hibát – amit most nem fogok –, hogy elsiettem a dolgot, úgy gondolom, hogy 2024 áprilisában jöhet ki az új album. Jövő nyáron mindannyian fesztiválozni akarunk, de nem sürgetem a dolgot. Kibaszottul nem, mert valószínűleg ez lesz az utolsó albumunk, és biztos akarok lenni abban, hogy ez 10/10-es lesz.” Oliva állítja, hogy rengeteg ötletből válogathat: „Jelenleg három albumra elegendő anyagom van, ennek a legjobb pillanatait akarom felvenni egy albumra, három bónuszszámmal. Mindent felveszek, amikor a srácok idejönnek, az összes szart, ami van, és ha esetleg még egy albumot akarnék csinálni, akkor már minden készen lesz hozzá. Ez a terv.”

Az új irányvonallal kapcsolatban a következőket mondta: „Ennek a sok szarnak egy része nagyon erős. Még magamra is csodálkozva nézek, hogy »szent ég, ez tényleg nagyot üt«, és az a tény, hogy Zak Stevens és én duóként osztozunk az éneken, még inkább megerősít ebben. Szándékosan írtam öt vagy hat olyan dalt, ami kifejezetten Zaknek készült. Aztán Al Pitrellivel dolgoztam egy csomó olyan számon, amelyek egyértelműen Oliva-nóták. Meg van néhány epikus tétel is. Ez lesz a legjobb album, amit valaha készítettem, hacsak meg nem ölöm magam. Csak azt tudom, hogy a Sava-rajongók kurvára el lesznek ájulva, amikor meghallják. Nem akartam kidolgozatlan albumot készíteni, úgy álltam hozzá, hogy ez lesz a legjobb, amit valaha kiadtam a kezemből, mert amikor távozom a színpadról, a csúcson akarom abbahagyni. Az egyik dal, aminek jelenleg For The Man Who Would Be King a címe, véleményem szerint az új Morphine Child [a ’Poets And Madmen’ albumon jelent meg először]. Ez az egyik dal, amiben Zak és én együtt éneklünk, a közepén olyan Queen-szerű, operás vokállal, na, az nagyon epikus lesz!”

Jon kitért az albumon szereplő zenészekre is: „Megkérem a korábbi dobosunkat, Steve Wacholzot, hogy játsszon néhány dalban, de az alapfelállás Jeff Plate-Johnny Lee Middleton-Al Pitrelli-Chris Caffery-Zak Stevens-én lesz. Néhány számban Jane Mangini, a Trans-Siberian Orchestra billentyűse is besegít majd és talán az ukrán Vitalij Kuprij [szintén TSO-tag], mert van néhány dolog, ami meghaladja a képességeimet, és úgy gondoltam, hogy ahelyett hogy hónapokig gyakorolnék, inkább megkérem őket. A TSO billentyűsei messze a világ legjobbjai közé tartoznak, ezért megkérdeztem magamtól: »Oliva, te hülye vagy? Miért ülsz itt és próbálkozol? Úgyse tudod megcsinálni, ha négy kezed lenne, az is kevés lenne hozzá.«”

Oliva a munkafolyamatról és a lehetséges albumcímről is nyilatkozott: „Mindenkit bevonok az elejétől kezdve. Azt akarom, hogy ez egy teljes zenekaros album legyen, ahol mindannyian együtt dolgozunk. Nagyszerű lesz! A munkacím: ’Curtain Call’, de nem tudom, hogy ez lesz-e a végső, mert az album utolsó dalának ez a címe, amit csak én adok elő egy szál zongorán. Alapvetően a rajongókhoz énekelek ebben a dalban, elbúcsúzom tőlük és köszönetet mondok nekik. Minden alkalommal, amikor meghallom, sírva fakadok. Mindenki sírt, akinek eljátszottam, egyszerűen nagyon mély, érzelmes tétel. Így búcsúzom el mindenkitől: »Köszönöm! Szeretlek titeket! Ez az én végső búcsúm. Köszönöm! Legyen szép életetek!« Úgyhogy azt hiszem, ez lesz a címe, de ez még nincs kőbe vésve.”

Az ütemtervről így mesélt: „Júniusban kezdjük a munkát és egészen addig dolgozunk rajta, amíg nem kell Omahába mennünk a TSO próbáira. Aztán jön a TSO-turné, ahonnan januárban térünk vissza és februárig befejezünk mindent, jövő áprilisban, Criss [Criss Oliva a banda néhai gitárosa és Jon testvére] születésnapján szeretném kiadni.” A turnézásról a következőket mondta: „Rengeteg ajánlatot kaptunk, hogy jöjjünk át fesztiválozni. Én meg úgy vagyok vele, hogy rendben, de már nem vagyok 25 éves. Ha átjövünk, akkor Wackenbe biztosan el akarok menni, de jó lenne mindegyiket megcsinálni. És ennyi, nincs tovább, így szeretnék mindenkitől elbúcsúzni, a srácokkal együtt szeretnénk mindenkinek elmondani, hogy »hé, szeretünk titeket!«. Mindig is az életet jelentették nekem a rajongóink, és a jövő nyári fesztiválokon úgy odatesszük magunkat, hogy ezt sose felejtsék el!”

Monday, September 20: Savatage, “Morning Sun”

R.I.P. Paul O’Neill (1956-2017)

The surprise minor success of Dead Winter Dead was enough to convince Jon Oliva and Paul O’Neill that Savatage had finally found its niche as an overblown and near-symphonic conceptual outfit given to occasional metallic flourishes.  As a result, The Wake of Magellan doubled down on the idea by packing in two distinct narrative threads over bombastic rock and even more bombastic vocals. However, as tracks like “Morning Sun” illustrated, there was a little more crunch and bite this time around, since Chris Caffery and Al Pitrelli’s guitars were both more chugging and higher up in the mix than Oliva’s keyboards, while Zachary Stevens bellowed O’Neill’s melodramatic lyrics with metallic conviction.  There was still the froofy intro with borderline Opera Man whispering, but things kicked into gear once the guitars and Jeff Plate’s drums got to work. “Morning Sun” was pretty much as heavy as Savatage was going to get at this point, and while it was a far cry from The Dungeons are Calling or even Edge of Thorns, it at least showed that the band could play good metal when so inclined.
