Day Twenty-Five: Death is Just a Feeling
Avantasia’s hidden gem!
I love Death is Just a Feeling so much! Jon Oliva’s performance was just perfect and I love the lyrics, so it was hard to pick just one! But I ended up going with this one, and doing more of a metaphorical drawing!
Yes I know Scarecrow is holding a diamond and the lyric says silver I just draw diamonds easier 🤣

Wednesday, October 19: Savatage, “Washed Out”
R.I.P. Criss Oliva (1963-1993)
Power of the Night was Savatage’s major label debut, and as such balanced traditional ‘80s metal anthems like the mighty title track with the emerging hair metal of the hilariously ludicrous “Hard for Love”.  But there was also “Washed Out” to remind everyone this was the same band that ripped through The Dungeons Are Calling: Jon Oliva’s vocals were commanding without resorting to cheap histrionics, Criss Oliva pulled out a straightforward charging riff and Steve “Doc” Wacholz pummeled his kit in classic Killdrums fashion, with all aided by a dry and precise Max Norman production that, in retrospect, sounded like a dry run for his work on Countdown to Extinction. The track was a brisk and fun headbanger that, while not entirely purposeful, reasserted Savatage’s metal bonafides during their uncertain early years on Atlantic.

The Devils I Know - Number 14
Welcome to “The Devils I Know!” For this spooky time of year, from now till Halloween, I’ll be counting down My Top 31 Depictions of the Devil, from movies, television, video games, and more! Today’s Devil is a Trans-Siberian Menace. Number 14 is…The Version from “Beethoven’s Last Night.”
Tumblr media
“Beethoven’s Last Night” is a rock opera created by Trans-Siberian Orchestra – a group most well-known for their many, MANY Christmastime albums and Yuletide song covers. The story is sort of a bizarre blend of “Faust” and “A Christmas Carol,” taking place on – as the title implies – the last night of Ludwig Von Beethoven’s life. Moments before what will be his death, time stops and the Composer is first confronted by the angelic figure of Fate, and her warped son, Twist, who are planning to escort Beethoven to Heaven even as the composer is in the midst of completing his Tenth Symphony.
However, before the pair can do this, the Devil himself – here called Mephistopheles – sweeps into the room and declares that Beethoven’s soul belongs to him. However, he is willing to let Beethoven’s soul go in exchange for one simple thing: the destruction of the Tenth Symphony. Beethoven is torn by a monumental choice: either allow himself to be damned for all eternity, or give up his greatest masterpiece and final legacy. Fate offers to help, and takes Beethoven on a trip through his past, as the composer hopes he can change his life around and find some way to save both himself and his life’s work. This endeavor does not go the way Beethoven hoped, and when he returns to the present, the Devil is still waiting for him. But Mephistopheles offers a new counter-bargain: he points to a small child, a lonely orphan, shivering in the streets. He declares that if Beethoven is so desperate to keep his soul and his music, he will let him have both…but the girl and her soul will, as a result, be given up to the Devil. Another monumental decision stands before Beethoven as a result: save himself and his creation, or let an innocent child – a girl he knows nothing about – be condemned to an undeserved fate of torture and despair. I absolutely LOVE Beethoven’s Last Night. It’s never been staged as a proper stage show, but it HAS been performed in a concert form many times, and there are multiple editions of the album to pick from. Fittingly, multiple performers have sung the role of Mephistopheles in the show. The original singer, on the album, is Jon Oliva; Oliva’s vocals remind me distinctly of characters like Mark Hamill’s Joker or Steven Blum’s Green Goblin. His Devil is a shrill, cackling creature with a decidedly maniacal quality to his voice, but there’s also a smoothness and a sharpness to it, and even a sense of raw power in several points. You never forget that this is a being of cosmic and anti-divine might, but he’s also entertainingly wicked. In the concerts, the role has been sung by Jeff Scott Soto and Ronny Munroe. Soto’s Devil is a little more flamboyant in his gestures and expressions, really playing up the Devil as a master showman who knows how to make a big entrance. Munroe, meanwhile, plays the character as a much more coldhearted, tough sort of character, with moments of terrible stillness punctuated by sharp and sudden motions and vocal changes, creating an unpredictable and frightening character.
All three of these Devils do a fantastic job. I think, personally, Munroe might be my favorite, but Soto and Oliva are utterly brilliant, as well. Kudos, also, to artist Greg Hildebrandt, who created MANY pieces of artwork related to the album, for promotional and storytelling purposes. His dark-shrouded, shadowy Devil is a black-cloaked walking archetype of evil, with serpent-like eyes and clawed hands, and looks magnificent when paired against the powerful silhouette of Beethoven and the purity of Fate. No matter which way you slice it, Mephistopheles in “Beethoven’s Last Night” is one of the greats in my book. He and all his incarnations are more than worthy of a place in my Top 15.
Tomorrow, the countdown continues with Number 13! HINT: Two Devils For the Price of One.

Death is just a feeling 🎩
Happy Halloween everyone!
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do an actual Halloween drawing, but I feel this song, and the entire Wicked Trilogy, fit the Halloween aesthetic!
This is actually an older drawing, but I never posted it on my art account, so here it is! Hehehe!
Death is just a Feeling is definitely one of my favorite Avantasia songs! Jon Oliva is a beast and he did AMAZINGLY!
Hope you all have a happy Halloween! 🎃

WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION MAGAZINE :  JANUARY 1996
Private Eye
Rock ‘N’ Roll All Night & Wrestle Every Day!
Photos by Tom Buchanan
Recently, at New York City’s Electric Lady Studios, some of the brashest head-bangers in heavy metal clashed with a sample of spectacular squared circle superstars to…….make beautiful music together?
That’s right, Daddy, the best five man tag team in professional wrestling–the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels, Big Daddy Cool Diesel, Bret “Hot Man” Hart, Razor Ramon and the Undertaker (Along with manager Paul Bearer)--clashed with such metal maniacs as Savatage lead singer Jon Oliva, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian and Pro-Pain bassist Gray Meskil (Who, I might add, are ALL World Wrestling Federation FANATICS) and a host of others to collaborate on “Full Metal: The Album.” an exciting new World Wrestling Federation LP that is soon to be released in Germany.
“Full Metal: The Album” contains two songs by the bashin’-bangin’ ensemble entitled “We’re All Together Now” (which is also being released as a music video) and “Thorn in Your Eye” (An upbeat tune led by Michel B. and Olli S. of the German Crossover Kings, a popular Deutschland rap duo)! In conjunction with those original tunes, “Full Metal: The Album” Also contains 12 theme songs of various Federation Superstars, including Psycho Sid’s “Psycho Dance” and the Smoking Gunns’ “Smokin’”
The album was scheduled to be released in Germany sometime in November, and as of press time negotiations were being held in an effort to make “Full Metal: The Album” available to fans in the United States as well.
[(Opposite page top) While Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels look on, the Undertaker and Big Daddy Cool get some insights into the mixing board at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Meanwhile (opposite page bottom) back behind the mike, the Fab Five belt out a tune!
This page: (Top) Bret “Hit Man” Hart raps with Jon Oliva, lead singer of Savatage, while Paul Bearer checks out the microphone for his Undertaker. (Middle) And a one, and a two–with everything in position, the Undertaker prepares to bellow out a few notes, while Tim Mallare, the drummer of Overkill, looks on. (Bottom) Oliva poses with the Fab Five as they wrap up the set!]
