Cryptid of the Day: Akkorokamui
Description: Akkorokamui is a giant octopus of Ainu folklore, which supposedly lurks in the Funka Bay in Hokkaido, and has even been seen in Taiwan and Korea since the 19th century. Missionary John Batchelor recounted an encounter that three men had with the beast, claiming that the men caught the octopus while hunting sword fish.

Akkorokamui
Akkorokamui is a gigantic octopus-like monster from Ainu folklore, similar to the Nordic Kraken, which supposedly lurks in Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido. It is said that its enormous body can reach sizes of up to 120 metres (390 feet) in length. Its name can be translated as "tentacle-holding kamuy."
Tumblr media
According to legend, Akkorokamui was once a gigantic spider named Yaushikep who lived in the mountains nearby a village named Rebunge. One day, Yaushikep ascended down to Rebunge and caused havoc. Fearing for their lives, the villagers prayed to the gods to save them. Their prayers were answered by the sea god Repun Kamuy, who pulled Yaushikep into Uchiura Bay. It is said that Yaushikep turned into a giant octopus who took over the bay as its god and since then, he has been known by the villagers as At-kor-kamuy or Akkorokamui.
Ainu reverence of this monster has permeated into Shinto, which has incorporated Akkorokamui as a minor kami. Self purification practices for Akkorokamui are often strictly followed. While Akkorokamui is often presented as a benevolent kami with powers to heal and bestow knowledge, it is fickle and has the propensity to do harm. Akkorokamui's nature as an octopus means that it is persistent and it is near impossible to escape its grasp without permission.
Akkorokamui enjoys the sea and offerings which reflect this: fish, crab, mollusks, and the like are particular favorites of Akkorokamui, which give back that which it gave. Homage to Akkorokamui is often for ailments of the limbs or skin, but mental purification and spiritual release is particularly important.
Akkorokamui is characteristically described with the ability to self-amputate, like several octopus species, and regenerate limbs. This characteristic manifests in the belief in Shinto that Akkorokamui has healing powers. Consequently, it is believed among followers that giving offerings to Akkorokamui will heal ailments of the body, in particular, disfigurements and broken limbs.
Shrines in dedication to Akkorokamui and associated octopus deities are found throughout Japan.

When they were Yaushikep, they would terrorize the village of Rebunge, however fervent prayer was answered by the sea god Repun Kamuy, who dragged Yaushikep into the sea, transforming the red spider into an octopus. Now, as Atkor Kamuy, they act as the ambivalent god of Uchiura Bay, equal parts protective and merciless, capable of swallowing passing ships and whales with ease.
When Atkor Kamuy appears above the waves, both the sky and the water are coloured red to reflect the scale of the deity's massive manifestation.

Akkorokamui
The Akkorokamui, also known as the Ashketanne Mat (long-fingered woman) is a part-human-part-octopus creature from Aino and Shinto folklore. The Akkorokamui is said to lurk in Funka Bay in Hokkaidō, Japan.
~~~ Legend ~~~~
Millennia ago, vengeful spirits cursed Rebunge, a villager of Abuta Toyoura, to see the destruction of his town. They sent a part-spider-part-human creature, called Yaoshikepu , to fulfill the curse. Yaoshikepu ran rampant throughout the town, causing destruction and slaughtering so many that the streets turned with crimson blood. After hearing the townsfolk’s prayers, the sea kami, Repunkamui, transformed Yaoshikepu into an octopus, and cast her into the sea.
After Yaoshikepu was cast into the sea, she grew and grew and grew. Eventually, she began to hunt and consume larger prey, like whales and ships. One day, Akkorokamui swallowed a boat full of fishermen whole. In her stomach, they called for help. Hearing the cries, Repunkamui poisoned Akkorokamui, allowing the fishermen to escape as she cried out in pain. However, Akkorokamui learned to use the venom Repunkamui inflicted on her to attack her prey.
Since then, there have been many recoded sightings of Akkorokamui throughout history.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
1800s sighting - John Batchelor
John Batchelor was on an expedition to Japan in the 1800s and wrote about his encounter with the Akkorokamui in one of his books. He stated that the beast was around 120 meters in length and confirmed the striking colour of the creature, Batchelor likened the red tone of the monsters skin “to the colour of the reflection of the setting sun upon water”. Batchelor’s account also corroborates the idea of Akkorokamui harnessing the poison inflicted upon her, stating that the creature’s lips “emitted a dark guild which has a very powerful and noxious odour”.
So what do u guys think? Is the Akkorokamui real or not? Let me know and have a debate in the comments if u want!
(Also first real post wooooo! It’s a shitty drawing but who gives a fuck :) and to the person who has decided to click on my post, have a great day friend!)

Akkorokamui. Art by Andrew Rodgers and Christopher Penzel, from the LiL Cryptid Oracle.
~MEDITATION~
Tentacles reach for considered thoughts
Mindfulness, focusing, stable state, soul-searching, introspection, being alone, inner guidance, Isolation, loneliness, withdrawal, self-reflection
Take a moment to reflect and think before moving forward. Quiet your mind so that your inner communications are loud and clear. Build an understanding and connection, let the tentacles of your mind connect threads, and relax. Achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.
While Akkorokamui is often presented as a benevolent kami (god like spirit) with powers of the mind and to heal and bestow knowledge, it is fickle and has the propensity to harm. Most commonly sighted in the pacific ocean mostly around Japan or the coast line.

Can't believe I didn't see this before, but in your second abyssal mermaid book, Into The Drowning Deep, the second ship to go in search of the mystery is called the Melusine, a mermaid with two tails/legs.
If there's an eighth story, will the ship be named after an octopus?
...it will be now. Just for you. Either the Kraken or the Akkorokamui will sail to look for mermaids.

Question: if the TS Cast existed in the real world, what nationality do you think they’d be?
This is my headcanon:
*A lot of it is based off of food they like 💀💀💀 but bare with me. This idea has been brewing in my mind a lot and I gotta get it out there.
Ais: Japanese. I think this is the most obvious one. The Shinto gates, the red oni horns, he drinks green tea, the yukata he wears. Also there’s a possibility that Ocudeus was inspired by the ancient Japanese kraken called Akkorokamui of Ainu, but that’s just my prediction. I also see him as a Wasian. Maybe I’m projecting my biracialness hehe.
Leander: German. This one I’m a little “???” on but he’s a heavy drinker and I know beer is an iconic beverage in Germany. Legal drinking age is also 14 with adult supervision. Also according to this by the amazing @eridiasangel, Leander likes hashbrowns, and potato is a staple food in Germany. Then there’s the magic flowers symbolism and it reminds of the movie Tangled inspired by the German folktale.
Kuras: Egyptian or Iraqi! I’m basing this off his design choice, but also Eridia is heavily inspired from Arabian/Islamic architecture so if we assume Kuras was the “founding father” of Eridia, than I think it’s safe to assume he is of that descent irl. There’s also the House of Knowledge in Egypt and House of Wisdom in Baghdad so it fits him perfectly.
Edit: thanks to anon who informed me Arabian is actually an ethnolinguistic group!! 👍
Mhin: Chinese. I’m basing this off of this TS post. Many people think it’s the Chinese food, Tang Yuan. Other than that I’m kinda 🧍‍♀️on this one. I could also see them being European cuz they give gothic, Victorian vibes.
Edit: also their name reminds me of the Chinese name, Min, which means “quick” and “clever”
Vere: I am really stuck on Vere, but I have to say Filipino maybe Taiwanese cuz it’s canon he likes Fruit Oolong Tea.
What do you guys think? Do you agree or have another nationality in mind for them?

This doll was a Deuce I found mangled and missing his arms and feeling inspired by other customs I decided to put on these "finger" tentacles which were rubbery things you put on your hands. Despite several moves and life changes, I still have a big soft spot for Tako my Octopus demon and I'm glad I'm able to refresh him.
I really am a bit embarrassed of my Monster High OCs and rarely talked about them, but Tako's the son of an Akkorokamui who was born when his mother's two tentacles were cut off and due to her regeneration powers birthed him ala earthworm myth style lol. I had a scar on him beforehand to show he was a bit rowdy and careless due to his regeneration powers but I think he's matured enough not to get into fights anymore.
I'm really happy how he looks as I think my paint skills have finally caught up to match what I conceptualise in my head.

Dream decides to get married; Hob was right - he admits to him one evening- he is lonely, had been for a very long time and spending ~130 years stuck in a glass cage in some dude’s basement had not helped with this one bit. One might argue it made things worse.
And so, Dream of the Endless, embarks upon a quest to find a wife. Well, I say “embark upon a quest”, more like sits on his throne while an endless line of eligible bachelorettes present themselves to him, like it’s some Ye Olde Tinder and Dream is continuously swiping left.
Hob is… not impressed. He implores Dream to change his method of selection because world’s longest yikes, at least spend some time with your potential brides? Find out what they’re like before you reject them? Clearly the good old fashioned method of Ill See Her And Know She’s The One For Me is not working. Frankly, that’s the same advice that Lucienne and Matthew give him.
Dream gets an idea. He enlists Hob to help him find the future Mrs Of The Endless, because after all, who better than his best friend, to sieve through all these candidates? To know what he’s looking for? To advise him, to support him, to be his literal best man?
Hob spends then next several months helping Dream find his queen. Ok, I say queen but at this point they agree they have to cast the net a bit wider. Goddesses and fairy princesses and nymphs are nice of course, but we’re talking about finding The One for Dream! Also the pool of candidates has quickly dried out so to speak Imagination is the limit!!
And so, any supernatural being that believes they could impress Dream enough to have him propose, takes a chance; from the most beautiful beings of grace and beauty so radiant that just looking at them makes Hob cry, to the most terrifying demons from the deepest, darkest pits of hell, handpicked by Lucifer herself. Outer Gods whose eldritch shapes would cause instant madness in Hob if Dream’s power didn’t protect him. Old Ones so unperceivable to human eye that Hob simply… fails to perceive them. All shapes, all genders, all pantheons. It seems a bit too much for one human but he made a promise to Dream, he will not fail him, Dream will find love, even if it will literally kill Hob.
Alas, every single candidate Hob presents to Dream thinking they may be a suitable match, has something wrong with them; Apollo is too prideful, and frankly, a bit of a dick *coughspotkettlecoughs* The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young has a family that loves to interfere, Formless Oedon wants an open marriage, Onoskelis is probably only here at the orders of Lucifer, to help her take over Dreaming, vampire queen doesn’t understand that Dream’s job comes first, Akkorokamui seems too clingy. Etc etc etc at infinitum
[Calliope joins the chat
Calliope: Hey guys!
Calliope: what’s happening in the dreaming??
Hob: We’re looking for a wife for Dream!
Calliope:
Calliope has left the chat]
Yet, every step of the way, no matter how many candidates Dream rejects, Hob is there for him, cheering him up when he’s down, making him laugh when he’s upset, always promising that they’ll find someone; maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but someday.
Months, nay YEARS pass and then one day Dream asks Hob to present the next candidate and Hob says… there’s none. There’s no one left. There’s no being in this vast, endless cosmos that Dream hasn’t consider and then rejected.
Dream is, frankly, devastated. So all this in vain, huh? No one to be at Dream’s side no matter what? No one to love him the way he is? No one who understands him, knows him, yet chooses to stay despite his many many many faults? No one he can trust? No one who…. Oh wait a minute!
Turns out the real wife was the Hob we made along the way.
Hob and Dream: guys. Guys. We have something to tell you. We know it will come as a bit of a shock, frankly, we’re still trying to comprehend is ourselves, but turns out we are super in love and getting married?!?!
Matthew, Lucienne, Death, Rose Walker, The Corinthian, Lucifer, Desire, Constantine: /sarcasm oh that is shocking and unexpected indeed! /end sarcasm

Rippling Spring—Ais
Tumblr media
The one thing I find the most riveting about Ais, is the monster that lives within his skull: Ocudeus
With the prefix obviously being pulled from "octopus", however the suffix is what I'm truly curious about.
Which could possibly be derived from "Asmodeus" whose earliest etymology has connections to "wrath" and "demon". Heralded as a Prince of Hell, he was assigned the Sin of Lust, though he also has traits of wrath, jealousy, anger and revenge.
Tumblr media
[Photo taken from NekoChang, Touchstarved Demo Part Two, Seaspring Tentacles]
In the Testament of Solomon he was forced to build a temple—Among that Ais does indeed have a temple of sorts—Asmodeus also states that he hates water and birds because they remind him of God.
And while Mhin might not necessarily be a bird, it's hard to miss the Weeping Crow and their dislike of each other— Though Ais only seems to be reciprocating the feelings as far as the demo's shown.
Another piece that might not amount to much is the fact that Ais dislikes seafood. Which might not share the same weight as Asmodeus disliking water but its a tidbit I find interesting...
Judging by the heavy influence from Japanese folklore, I found myself conflicted on the prefix of Ocudeus just being "octopus" and not a double entendre for "Akkorokamui" whose body is said to reach 120 meters in length.
How this relates to Ais or even Ocudeus?
Akkorokamui enjoys the sea and so the offerings that it receives—crabs, mollusks, fish—are often gifted to him. Which are also staples in seafood dishes as well.
By giving it back what it gave, this homage is often done for ailments of skin and limbs with heavy emphasis on mental and spiritual purification [The SeaSpring; MC relations mayhap?]
Depicted as benevolent with powers that heal and bestow knowledge, Akkorokamui does have instances where it is fickle, and its nature as an octopus means it's persistent and near impossible to escape without permission... [Ais and his pact?]
Which leads to my lukewarm theory that if Leander is connected to Fogfall in some way, could Ais, or more specifically, Ocudeus be connected to the Soulless just like Kuras is?
Those that drink the Spring water are purified in some way, as seen by the Crimson-Eyed Woman, however in exchange they become a group mind, and Ais is the host. [or is it Ocudeus?]
Because the most notable part about Soulless are the tentacles that hang from their mouths and the eyes covering their bodies—referring to Akkorokamui and how offerings are given to heal the body and cleanse the mind, could this possibly be a twist on the folklore? Especially the part where they give back what has been given?
Does one slowly transform into a Soulless after drinking the Spring water and if so, could that be why he's only a leader in a figurative sense?

Akkorokamui from Shinto folklore.
In Shinto mythology, the Akkorokamui is portrayed as a humanoid creature with a vibrant red hue, reminiscent of the sunset's reflection on water. Standing at an impressive 120 meters, this entity shares characteristics with certain octopus species, possessing the unique ability to self-amputate and regenerate limbs. In Shinto belief, this regenerative quality translates into healing powers, with followers offering gifts to Akkorokamui in the hope of curing physical ailments, especially disfigurements and broken limbs.
According to a legend, Rebunge, a villager of Abuta Toyoura, fell victim to a spirit's curse, foretelling the devastation of his town. The curse took the form of Yaoshikepu, a creature with both spider and human attributes, unleashing havoc and turning the streets crimson with blood. Fearing this monstrous entity, the sea kami Repunkamui intervened, transforming Yaoshikepu into an octopus and casting her into the sea.
As Yaoshikepu grew in size underwater, she evolved to consume larger prey, including whales and ships. One ill-fated day, Akkorokamui ( the transformed Yaoshikepu) swallowed a boat full of fishermen, who, trapped inside, called for help. Responding to their pleas, Repunkamui poisoned Akkorokamui, causing immense pain. Seizing the opportunity, the fishermen escaped, but Akkorokamui adapted, learning to use the venom as a weapon against her prey.

FEBUWHUMP | SOLITARY CONFINEMENT | WC: 515
Dragged from that spit of rock to the depths of the sea, Sorahiko only attended one session of Motoji’s court before a displeased Lord Akkorokamui found him attempting to sow discontent among sycophants and cowards.
“Scared of disloyalty?” Sorahiko taunted his old lover, flicking his wrists for show.
“You’re more comfortable among courtiers than I bargained for,” Motoji answered, and then towed Sorahiko out of public sight, holding the chain like a leash. Then they had gone down, down, down, and the last thing Sorahiko had seen was the entrance to the windowless, lightless crypt.
When he woke to nothing but ink-black emptiness, his terror hadn’t flared yet. Not until Sorahiko’s limbs knocked into the walls after a mere twitch. Not until that first heart-stopping moment when he’d instinctively gone for his magic, and the shackles hummed gold light for a brief second to expose the dimensions of his confinement.
The illumination from Sorahiko’s shackles was, perhaps, the only reason why Sorahiko did not go mad in the dark. They were in turns soothing and strangling. To see them meant that his magic hadn’t disappeared. It also meant, more infuriatingly, that his magic had been co-opted into its own leashing.
Periodically, he tested them for weakness. He just needed one flaw. One flaw, to shatter his restraints. Motoji’s shock at seeing Sorahiko had been short-lived, but Sorahiko held out hope that his ex’s belated action to spring a trap could have resulted in an unbalanced weave.
Lord Akkorokamui had been refining his witchcraft for centuries, though. He would never tolerate a mediocre spell, especially if it was going to be a feat he himself performed.
“I’ll kill him,” Sorahiko said aloud, somewhat blankly and hoarsely. “I’m really going to kill him this time.”
The darkness provided no comfort. Sorahiko reflexively tested the cuffs again, and failed to even pick away at the inscrutable web of witchcraft that bound him. He ran a physical check for the umpteenth time as well; despite however long Sorahiko had been confined, his new gills still felt raw and uncomfortable. More importantly, his body wasn’t even deteriorating. Not even muscle atrophy, which had been Sorahiko’s first fear when Motoji left him in here.
Some kind of stasis effect. One that kept his body’s needs sated, because no one dropped by to feed him either.
He couldn’t remember how long he panicked, or whether he had actually begged Motoji to free him, but Sorahiko’s hysterical fit had eventually dropped to a numbness, and in that gray understanding of his situation, Sorahiko remembered that he should be furious.
Except even fury burned out, didn’t it--?
Fuck, he’d been here for a while.
He imagined being hauled out of the abyss. His plan to throw Nedzu at Motoji’s smug face grew more elaborate every time he remembered it.
“I’ll kill him,” Sorahiko repeated. His heart might not be in it--my dear, you missed me--but Sorahiko could think logically. And logic told him that somewhere down the line, Sorahiko was going to put down his heart and help the son of Lord Akkorokamui again.

Gaap Goemon- A deep sea of mysteries and legends
Goemon is from the Gaap family and he's a samurai but we all know that there are more things we need to know about him and I am very curious too. In the meantime I thought I'll do a little overthinking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the costume that Goemon wore on Iruma's Birthday. It's tilted "magician of the sea". Though I saw him in that chapter i couldn't make out anything from it as the title wasn't given in the chapter. I never even saw these draft designs Nishi sensei published. Now with the title we'll think that Goemon has something to do with the sea! Also I noticed that his home has seashells hanging from the roof and embedded onto the pillars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later I found a theory on twitter and the draft was available there. This is an excellent theory 🔮 which says that Goemon could be an octopus like demon. The author relates him to Akkorokamui, a Japanese octopus demon that is kind, generous and has healing powers. Akkorokamui is also worshipped in many parts of Japan. Akkoro-kamui. I wonder if that's why Nishi sensei put Camui near Goemon in the beginning lol. Anyway, it could be true as the other titles suit their characters. Also when I looked at the house closely I saw this
Tumblr media
On the main roof, the symbol looks like Goemon's head with tentacles!
Then if you play TRPG you probably might know about "The call of Cthulhu". Cthulhu is a giant monster that has an octopus head, wings like a dragon's and body of a human's. He resembles Goemon SO MUCH! His head, wings and the tail, if you look closely, Cthulu's tail looks like one in Goemon's costume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nishi sensei is a fan of O.O no shuyaku wa ware ware da. You know, Shaoron and his gang that you see in the spin off manga. They are actually real people and Shaoron plays this game. I wonder if they got inspired by Cthulhu too. It could be possible that both the legend of Akkorokamui and Cthulhu could be blended into the creation of Goemon.
Cthulhu and the crest on the roof have the same expression!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The call of Cthulhu is actually a series of stories written by H. P Lovecraft. They got adapted into movies and games.
