Another anime rec, Ahiru no sora! They're kinda ugly but you get used to it lol. And the slam dunk movie 😍

While we're talking about recs, got any good animes lol?

Oh, oh; Ahiru reminds me there's another volleyball anime like Haikyuu called Seiin High School Boys’ Volleyball Club. I only watched the first few episodes but the animation is good. Other than that, I mostly watch battle Shounen so I don't know if you care for that but there's:

Inuyasha – a classic

SK8 Infinity: feel good sports anime about skateboarding; season 2 coming soon. You probably already watched it though since you seem like you like sports anime! Air Gear is also an older sports anime.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn – This is an old one I used to watch back in middle/high school. It started as a comedy manga actually, so like yeah the main character runs around in his boxers doing silly things with the other cast for like the first 18 episodes; but after that, it turns into your standard shounen anime. If you don’t like the comedy part, you can watch to like episode 10 (or whenever a character named Fuuta comes in) and skip to episode 20. The art is a little rough in the first season too. It’s a very easygoing shounen, not many people die.

It actually holds a dear place in my heart. I always hear rumors of a remake coming but I’m never sure if they’re true. It’s also made by the same lady who did the art for Psycho-Pass.

Psycho-Pass: Crime thriller with the FINEST men.

D. Gray Man: also, nostalgic choice; it’s a shounen about fighting demons, and the demons are made from people’s tragedies. It has a sort of anthology feel at first with the different stories. I do like that the main female character can carry her own in a fight too (but then she started to get on my nerves a little later lol).

Deadman’s Wonderland: I highly suggest the manga over the anime. The Anime cuts out and skips so much. It’s about a kid who gets put in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, but there’s superpowers and death match for the jail to make money. It’s an extremely violent anime though and has SA, what basically counts as human trafficking, torture, and other triggers like that.

Yu Yu Hakusho: A classic along with Dragon Ball Z. Gege Akutami said the 3rd season villain (Sensui) is one of his favorite villains. You can tell he really based Geto off of him and his fall from grace, along with both their plans to solve their issues. Geto has more romanticization with his reasons though. It does fall off a bit in season 4 though. He’s also the guy who wrote Hunter x Hunter.

Gangsta. : This one is pretty graphic. Has SA, child abuse, prostitution, and mafia type things, but I love the main 3 characters and their relationship with one another. It also has a deaf main character and good diversity if you’re looking for that kind of representation.

K Project: It’s an ecchi, but I really enjoyed the ride trying to figure out who the murderer is. I recommend reading K: Project Red manga first because it makes the context of the anime mean so much more and gives backgrounds to all the characters; it also makes the anime more emotional. The cat girl is annoying to me though lol

Parasyte is a good one I’ve heard.

Summer Wars: a really good anime movie about a family trying to save the country when a Satellite threatens to crash when a virus takes over all internet intelligence.

A Letter to Momo: Another movie; it has a little bit of a Spirited Away feel (although Spirited Away is much better). It’s a coming-of-age story about a girl who moved to an island after her father passed away and island spirits are trying to help her with her problems.

Ranking of Kings: It’s a good one; the story gets dark a bit suddenly. I actually still have to finish it!

The other stuff you probably seen like Saiki K., Jojo, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Ouran High School Host club, Angel Beats, Noragami, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo.

A few extra things:

With team ups I will do them with opposite genders.

Although i can't have a limit on characters there's a chance that if there are many characters i will cut it in half. For example, for the  Danganronpa case if the whole case is requested I will split it by writing the boys and girls separately.

I can do mixed posts with characters from different series in the same post.

What other ships do you ship besides Makorra?

Funny you should ask! I was just thinking about how this account was supposed to be my dumpster pit for all my favorite moments in a given show/video game and somehow this became a Makorra centric blog 😅. It’s probably because TLOK checks off everything I’d want and I love the idea of what it could have been.

Anyways, here are my top 20 ships. It’s not in order, but I’ll star the ships that have a special place in my heart.

Clerith* - Cloud x Aerith, Final Fantasy VII Remake I’ll admit FFVIIR may have tipped the scales for ALL my ships. This is the ship that sent me down a romance wormhole that eventually led me back to Makorra. The main reason why this is a Makorra blog instead of Clerith is because I didn’t write metas to sort out my feelings. Instead, I talked my friend’s ear off and rewatched all my favorite couples in hopes of moving on. It kind of worked.

Zerith* - Zack  x Aerith, Crisis Core I usually jump ships between games, but since FFVIIR is on another level, I might prefer Clerith now.

SoKai* and SoRiku* - Riku x Sora x Kairi, Kingdom Hearts (I’m happy with either, but I’ll take an OT3)

Zutara* Zuko x Katara, Avatar the Last Airbender  The ship that got me into shipping! I know some get annoyed when we compare Makorra to Zutara, but I’ve always gotten Zutara vibes in TLOK. Zutara has the story I love. Makorra has most of the visuals I crave.

Fakiru* Ahiru x Fakir, Princess Tutu  Ok, this is super tough because I also ship Ahiru with Mytho. Princess Tutu does such an amazing job with having folks like me hop ships. I highly recommend it for Makorra stans, though you still might be angry with the ending. 

Fuugen* Fuu x Mugen, Samurai Champloo Are you seeing a pattern yet 😅

Kyohru Kyo x Torhu, Fruits Basket (nostalgia is what keeps me on the ship, but as an adult, I’m a bit concerned 😅)

if you want: basketball or to learn about basketball / well animated matches and easy to follow / well-paced / great character development all around / some non-sport related drama as well

I was apprehensive about watching “Ahiru no Sora” to say the least as I’ve gotten myself stuck with an anime that seems to just never want to end that I don’t even particularly like already and really didn’t want to expand that list. Thankfully, there was o need to worry as “Ahiru no Sora” is fucking great!

Another sports anime, this time our focus is basketball! No, I don’t know anything about basketball nor have I ever had any interest in it but seeing how sports anime could make “Rock, paper, scissors” interesting, I’ve pretty much stopped caring about what sport an anime is tackling.

Our main character is little, wittle Sora who hates being little, wittle cause basketball players are kinda skyscrapers. Nevertheless, he has an insatiable love for the sport and that is why he decides to lef it to the basketball team of his new high school immediately. But oops, the basketball team is filled with hooligans. There we have the usual “build the club/team” from scratch trope. Among our dear hooligans we actually have 2 who have experience with the sport and 3 who don’t (who more or less will become our filler characters behind the more important main characters). Etc., etc, the club is finally formed and we can finally see some actual matches.

While “Ahiru no Sora” is a sports anime, it also follows your usual Shounen formula. The matches last multiple episodes, then we have some reflection, a few episodes of filler, then we’re back in the game with our characters having learnt stuff from their previous match and practiced new stuff to use on court. The matches also introduce us to multiple strong opponents who will pop in from time to time, now to give advice, watch a match or to have give us a running commentary.

The anime does an incredibly good job of redeeming characters. The hooligan basketball team really did feel like just a bunch of assholes when we first meet them; but none of that lingered by the very end of the anime. I didn’t like everyone equally but I didn’t despise anyone either. 

The basketball matches are also very well executed. As I said, because most players in this sport are really tall, they can run the whole court in like 3 steps. This makes basketball difficult to follow because everything happens so goddamn fast, you have no clue what’s going on. The anime solved this by the expected slow-mo which was complimented by a streak of light often following the ball’s movement to make us appreciate the techniques being pulled off. We also get to hear the inner thoughts of the team which slows down the pace of the game here and there to give us some breathing room.

I do have a few complaints. The first and most obvious one is the way the goddamn lips are drawn making everyone look like a frog. You get used to it but it’s a bit distracting in the beginning. The “romance” felt extremely shoehorned, like the writer only wanted to write about the damn basketball but because this is a Shounen we need GIRLS. One of the female side-characters gets way too much screentime in the second half of the anime. Her path diverges from those of the main characters so her scenes barely have anything to do with the main story. She was also intended as a love interest background character so her personality was too lacking to carry her own plotline by herself.

And of course, the heartbreaking “there’s more story but no 2nd season announced (yet)”. The anime ended on a good note where it’d be easy to pick up for a sequel. But as I don’t have time to read manga, I hope to god they greenlight a season 2.

Definitely a must watch for lovers of sports anime!

Okayyyy. So, I saw this anime on a list of anime similar to Haikyuu!! and then I also started seeing people referencing it in different comments/posts online regarding Haikyuu!! and other sports anime. I kinda wanna check it out, of course not going into it really comparing it to Haikyuu!! I’ll try not to…I’d want to give it a fair shot. I may watch the first ep, may not. I’m really tired and I have to go out tomorrow and my eyes are killing me (plus I still need to catch up with Ahiru No Sora and Full Metal Alchemist and a whole lot of other anime).

So last night I ended up watching eps 1-3 and honestly, I’m enjoying the anime so far. I haven’t really connected with any of the characters yet, but overall I’m enjoying myself (I think because I’m too hung up on my Karasuno boys right now, ah well). Also, a plus: the main girl isn’t annoying, lol. I actually like her a lot, which isn’t common for me and anime girls. But Gou/Kou? isn’t a trope-filled anime girl, she’s not overly shy or timid  or clumsy or any of those annoying traits that are supposed to somehow be “endearing”. She’s a normal, relatable girl (and dang she’s gorgeous too!)

Also, I really like how the antagonist Rin was a super good friend to the main gang in the past: he was the upbeat, positive kid and a good sport who charmed everyone and pushed Haru to swim in a relay with him when they were kids. But his personality has taken a HUGE turn, and at first it rubbed me the wrong way because the 180 didn’t make sense. Then it was explained a little (some trouble when he moved to Australia?) and it actually is understandable:

Rin’s dream is to be an Olympic swimmer, and Haru is just naturally super gifted at swimming. When Rin came for a visit from his special swimming school in Australia during middle school, it killed him that despite all that time devoted to training, he still couldn’t beat Haru. And that caused the rift between the two friend and caused Haru to quit competitive swimming because he thought he hurt Rin—it also  caused a change in Rin’s attitude. I like this backstory, it makes the dynamic between the protagonist and antagonist much more interesting.

Anyways, I actually want to watch a few more eps now (even tho I’m exhausted) as a kind of “feel good” wind down. Idk if I’m gonna get into this anime as much as I did Haikyuu, and maybe not even as much as I am into ANS or Fire Force, but we’ll see. The other sports anime have a large cast which gives you many options and opportunities to fall in love with characters, but Free! only has like 4 guys on their swim team…and one of them is a lil annoying :P So, we’ll see, it may just be a “wind down” anime that i don’t get emotionally /mentally invested in but still enjoy. Or i could become totally bored with it, or i could fall head over heels for these characters like I did with Haikyuu. Probs not the latter, if there was that possibility I think there’d be a lot more people in love with this anime and these characters than what I’ve seen so far on the internet. But again, we’ll see.

Umm okay YEAH WOW THAT LAST EPISODE WAS BEAUTIFUL OMG. Yeah I know, I know, I haven’t been journaling but I just decided to keep watching episode after episode and I got SO sucked into the relationship between Rin and Haru (as well as Rin and Mako/Nagisa) and UGH I LOVE THEIR BROMANCE and ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RIN IS LITERALLY BEST BOY.

Like honestly, the drama of the fractured friendship between Rin and the others—but especially Haru—was one of the main things that drove me to keep watching ep after ep until i finally was like, “Eh, might a well just watch ’til ep 12.” I was feeling all kinds of emotions lol, like being MAJORLY PISSED at Rei in ep 11 for butting into the guys’ history (but it’s ok he’s forgiven after letting Rin swim in his place in ep 12) to completely losing my mind when Haru and Rin reconciled. Anyways, yeahhhh soooooo I care about these boys now XD Not as much as I do Karasuno or anything like that, but I do feel things for Rin x Haru primarily, and then Makoto. I’m interested in seeing how the next season goes now that Rin is friends with the boys again. ~ EDIT 12:14PM – Okay earlier I was very exhausted (I literally binged-watched freakin NINE episodes, omg) and wasn’t as coherent as usual, so I didn’t really capture all my thoughts and feelings. I’m still rather tired, but I did want to say that I TOTALLY had a Rin-Haru-ship moment in the last episode: the entire time I’ve been absolutely adoring Rin’s friendship with the boys in elementary school; he was the shining star in their friendship. I wanted that again for the guys because elementary-school Rin was so wonderful, and he was a perfect foil to Haru’s personality. I absolutely loved how quiet, aloof Haru stubbornly tried to be disinterested in Rin but couldn’t stay away because Rin was so dynamic and charismatic (I mean, when Haru found out Rin ran home after swim practice, Haru determinedly started doing the same). Rin drove Haru, though Haru didn’t realize until after the relay race. And in return, years later in high school when the two raced at Rin’s new school that night, it was Haru who unknowingly made Rin rediscover his love for swimming after he had quit all those years ago (omg I really do love this anime TT_TT).

So throughout the episodes there’s all this underlying care that Rin shows for not only Haru but also Makoto as well, and vice versa. It was intriguing and magnetic and made me totally invested in seeing these guys reconcile. So when Rin faltered in the 100m race because he was so distracted by the emotional turmoil he felt about not racing with Haru and the others in the relay race, I was SO FOR IT because I wanted to see him distressed about the other guys—that showed that he really cared so deeply about them that it threw off his game. And when Rin not only made last place but was visibly heaving and couldn’t pull himself out of the water, I was even more like “AHHHKLAJDKJASLKLSAD!!!” and then when Haru was so overcome with concern and immediately shot out of his seat to go find Rin without a word I WAS LIVINGGGG OMG and then on top of that when he heard Rin say that he had quit swimming in the past and should’ve stayed quit and Haru stood there in shock  and having war flashbacks to his and Rin’s falling out in middle school and Haru basically collapsed against a wall in devastation of losing Rin yet again and possibly forever EVERYONE I WAS SOARING AND LIVING AND UGH IT WAS JUST SHKLSKFSKSSKDKJF THAT WAS EVERYTHING!!!!!

And then Haru finally explicitly says that all he wanted was to swim with Rin again and ugh I’m just WOW that episode was EVERYTHING, like literally that episode alone bumped this anime up so many levels for me and now my investment is so much more piqued than it was before (and I was binging this thing). I mean, they hinted at Haru wanting to just swim with Rin again in an earlier episode when Rin beat Haru at freestyle and said, “Now I’ll never have to swim with you again” and Haru was visibly shaken up at those words. He literally told Makoto that his freakin world went black when Rin said that like…AKDJFKHAJSKJD??!?!?!

UGH I love Haru and Rin’s relationship so much 😩. If adult Rin is anything like elementary-school Rin still…I may have found my bias ;) I haven’t seen nice adult Rin yet so we’ll see in Season 2.

Anyways, yeah. SIGH. WOW. Episode 12 took me by surprise with the switch-up and I was LIVINGGGG for it. WOW. I am SO HAPPY it happened and that the four of them are friends again. I honestly couldn’t have imagined a better ending ^_^

Kenji is very affectionate. He'll hold hands, wrap an arm around you, and kiss you. Only if you're alright with that. PDA isn't a bother to him, and people should know that you're taken.

B: Best Friend - What would they be like? How did it start?

Being his friend, he's going to play basketball with you in his free time. He works, plays basketball, and makes time for friends and relationships. It would start when you found him first. He doesn't seek out friendships. He could care less about the opinions of others.

C: Cuddles - Do they like it? How would they do it?

He loves cuddles. He would be the bigger spoon, wanting to protect you and keep you safe. He’s been in fights when he was younger. It doesn't scare him. Sure, you could hold your own, but you shouldn't have to.

D: Domestic - Do they want to settle? Cooking, cleaning?

He's indifferent to children. If it happens, it happens. If not, that’s okay, too. He's pretty okay at cooking. You could probably do better. He's better at cleaning than cooking.

E: Ending - How would they end things if they had to?

He would just disappear as if nothing was ever there. He doesn't want to see you upset when he ends things. He can't put you through that type of pain. He'd pretend like nothing was ever there if you do come across one another. It hurts, but he doesn't want to say that it’s over.

F: Fiance - Do they want to marry/when?

After a few years of being together, he might marry. If you’re into it. He's in no hurry to do anything.

G: Gentle - How gentle are they physically and emotionally?

He is very gentle physically. He knows his own strength and how to handle it. He can be blunt at times. You know that's who he is as a person. So it shouldn't offend you, and he isn't going to say things to offend you.

H: Hugs

He hugs somewhat tightly, as if you're never going to see each other again. As if this is the last time you'll ever hug.

I: I Love You

He wouldn't be the first to say, “I love you.” You would be, and he would say it after you do. He'll tell you he loves you before you go to sleep at night or before you both go separate ways. (Like if you're going to the store.)

J: Jealousy - How jealous are they? What do they do?

He's not overly jealous. He's the best that you have, and there isn't anyone better than him. Now, if you're intending to get him jealous. He would poke fun at you,

Soft and firm, on the lips. In the privacy of your house or somewhere secluded, like a closet, he may teasingly kiss your neck. He doesn't mind you teasing back.

L: Little Ones - How are they around children?

Not his child, not his problem. Your first mistake was leaving him to do with a child. Seems like he doesn't care at first. Yet, when the child is getting into something that they shouldn't be. “Hey! Let's not do that.” He says as he picks the item up from the child and places it on a higher place where they couldn't reach. “You shouldn't be getting into things like that.” The child would also know a few swear words. It wasn't intentional. Kenji swears, and once he heard the child repeat it, anytime Kenji went to swear, he tried to whisper it. Attempting to keep the child from hearing. He doesn't bother trying to keep the kid from swearing. It doesn't work. He tried and gave up.

M: Mornings - How are mornings with them?

He's anywhere from not an early riser but more of a night owl type of person to an early riser. It depends on the day. If he's up early, he'll be out playing basketball. If he's not up, then he's in bed.

N: Nights - How are nights with them?

He's out playing basketball if he didn't wake up early that morning to do so. If he did play that morning, then he would be doing his nightly routine.

O: Open - When would they reveal things? How open are they?

He's not very open, not for a few months of being together. After a few years, he would be much more open than before. To be honest, he didn’t think that he would get this far.

P: Patience - How easily angered are they?

He's very patient unless provoked. When he was younger, he acted out with violence. Now that he's older, he'll just swear or get loud.

Q: Quizzes - How much do they remember about you?

He remembers everything that you tell him. He doesn't want you to leave him for someone who would remember all of the details. He may not be the best, but he will damn sure try.

R: Remember - Favorite moment with you?

The time that you went to watch him play basketball or join in with him. He wasn’t expecting that from you.

S: Security - How protective are they of you?

He's very protective. He's seen how cruel the world can be. He's not going to restrict you from anything. Just be there to comfort you and protect you. It doesn't matter if you can't stand up for yourself. He will gladly do it for you.

T: Try - How hard do they try with dates, etc?

He tries his hardest, he's going to make sure that you feel loved and that he cares about you. He truly does.

U: Ugly - Bad habits of theirs?

Not setting an alarm. It's a miracle that he wasn't fired from work. He shows up and leaves when he feels like it.

He doesn't care much. Unless it's hair, he cares a lot about his hair. He has a hair care routine and a skin care routine.

Early in the relationship? Not so much. As things progress further? Yes.

He's insecure about not being good enough. That he's not trying as much as he could to impress you.

Overview:

I won’t have a lot of time to watch anime this season (or will I? 😏) so a lot of these are going to have to go. This is also the reason why I’m posting the list so late lol Sunday is the day with the most anime airing, but I’m just transferring some to Monday instead of dropping them since I’m really looking forward to most of them lol I know I need to make my list shorter but it’s so difficult to make a choice. I don’t want to drop any! 🤣

I’m continuing a few from last season:

Vinland Saga: which btw was my #1 last season!!! I originally just watched it because of Yuto Uemura voicing the mc, but holy shit I love everything about it. Askeladd is my husband!!! 😍

Enen no Shouboutai: well...tbh I’m very behind on this one, but I liked it enough to continue watching it lol Hopefully I can catch up soon.

Ensemble Stars: I didn’t expect it would get a 2nd cour! I need to also catch up on this one, but this one is in danger of being dropped. I still want to give it a chance though 🤣 

As for this season: I’m just so fucking excited for VinSaga, Babylon,  Chuubyou Gekihatsu Boy, Beastars, Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo, Fairy Gone S2 & Quan Zhi Gao Shou S2!!! (Hopefully it finally airs this season lol)

Final Thoughts - Fall 2019

This season was a major disappointment specifically if you look at it through my rules, but I set them this year and I intend to keep them.

Basically, multiple shows were confirmed to have “second seasons” or continuations coming in spring, which falls within my qualification as a “part two” rather than a whole new season and therefore puts them on an entirely different list at the end of the year. And most of what was left were a) already long shows or b) not interesting enough for me to want to hurry through them.

And Babylon, which is so delayed that I’m gonna include it in Winter 2020 because I’m not gonna let another whole January go by without finishing this rather bad year of anime.

Let’s get on with it, then.

Shows not appearing on this list:

Sword Art Online Alicization - War of Underworld, because it’ll now wind up on the Long Show list for next year as a whole (counting all of Alicization as one season, as it probably should be.) Food Wars: The Fourth Plate is in the same boat.

My Hero Academia Season Four, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, Fate/Grand Order, Case File nº221: Kabukicho, Phantasy Star Online 2, Radiant 2nd Season Ahiru no Sora, Blade of the Immortal, and Gundam Build Divers RE:Rise because they’re all long shows that will also land next year.

ORESUKI: Are you the only one that loves me? and Ascendance of a Bookworm because ORESUKI is apparently just not over until an OVA comes out next year (and boy oh boy is that fuckin stupid) and Ascendance now falls within my rules for a long show, as it’s continuing in less than six months.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Nue These II because it’s a series of movies and I don’t cover those.

Babylon because the second half isn’t burning off airing until January.

Fairy Gone and We Never Learn because they’ll end up on the Long Show list as per my rules.

So, with all of that out of the way, 23 shows were licensed for simulcasting that began and ended this fall. (Man, that’s depressing, and it’s only gonna get worse in a second)

In an effort to actually get this out in a reasonable time, I am just going to hit the highlights, because I have at least two more lists to do and trudging through my dropped list for Fall is going to give me Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Worst Of the Season: It’s a Fucking Tie

Val x Love

You probably won’t ever see the video I planned to make about the horrendous first episode of Val x Love because production issues caused me to delay it until it made no sense to make anymore, but I wrote several thousand words on the ineptitude on display in every facet of this show. Calling it trash is an insult to my garbage can.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy, Even in Another World!

I don’t understand the appeal of power fantasy shows and probably never will, but this one takes it about four steps too far with an entire cast of overpowered narcissists who face absolutely no stakes aside from the possibility that they might succeed too much. Who on earth is this for?

I finished 3 shows this season:

Kemono Michi: Rise Up! (7/10)

A very fun, very different isekai romp from the guy who brought you KonoSuba, Kemono Michi flew very comfortably under the radar this fall, only pulling in about half the viewership of the much less interesting Cautious Hero. Despite this, it was a fun combination of isekai with a standard sports anime plot, mixed in with gratuitous animal enthusiasm and a few very good wrestling sakuga shots.

Outburst Dreamer Boys (7/10)

But if Kemono Michi flew under the radar, Outburst Dreamer Boys may as well have been completely invisible, which is ironic given the attention-grabbing main cast. Despite a few moderately mature plot points, ODB wound up pulling me in with wholesome charm, depicting the best-case scenario for a benign group of high school oddballs getting to live their bliss.

Best of the Fall: Stars Align (9/10)

Of course, the show that ended up pulling in the most interest at the last possible second ended up at the very top of my list, if not for anything but strong animation (...to start, anyway) and sheer plot ambition. I’m not going to say that Stars Align handles all of its very delicate plot points with grace, but it does give them the gravitas they deserve, and it left me with my jaw on the floor at several points. We might never get the other half of the story, but what we have here is a great start to what should have been an amazing show (that should have landed on my long show list for next year…)
