The funny thing is that from the five years I’ve dabbled in Afk Arena, Vedan is probably one of the characters people just don’t like or care about. There is little to no fanart or fanfiction of him, which breaks my heart. He’s considered one of the unlikeable characters because of his actions and motivations, and everyone hates going up against him when he’s on the opposite team.
And I find that funny because everyone is sleeping on the potential.
Stick with me on this one, I have been suffering over this for five years:
Graveborn, if I remember correctly, canonically lose some if not all of their past lives’ memories when they turn. At the least their memory becomes ridiculously blurry and they struggle to recall their Lightbearer days.
Vedan would not be immune to this. He is still a Graveborn.
You don’t think that maybe, maybe after he wakes up from the ritual, he’s confused as hell on a few aspects of his life? Like, he remembers certain things. His name, his noble status, his snobbish personality… and that’s it.
Oh, he’s a vampire? Swell! How’d that happen? Why? Why are there two kids in his house? Why is one of them alive and hates him while the other is a Graveborn who trusts him implicitly? He can’t remember. He can’t remember anything. It’s like his entire life has been hard-reset. He’s still a selfish dick, but now he has to navigate this new life to the best of his abilities as a blank slate, because Count Vedan wouldn’t have accounted for the fact that by escaping death, he would have been sacrificing his memories.
He’ll have to go through countless journals and papers to piece together what happened while taking care of Isabella and Silvina to the best of his abilities, and question his own actions from the potential consequences he most likely has to deal with as someone who doesn’t remember them.
He has to train Silvina and Isabella still, which is hard to do when the older of the two despises him and makes training twice as difficult and the other is blowing things up constantly because she can’t yet control her powers, and now he has to integrate himself into the Graveborn courts, which is especially difficult because he’s Count Fucking Vedan and whose idea was it to let a bunch of madmen and evil scientists and doctors to run things? And now he has other more friendly Graveborn living in his castle as well. Fantastic.
I like Vedan just being an unlikable jerk, yes. It’s simple, to the point, and most likely to be true and widely accepted.
I also love the idea of Vedan actually ending up as a tired dad who has no idea what he’s doing as a Graveborn and is actually surviving by his cunning and by the skin of his fangs. He ends up taking in wandering Graveborn and becoming family with most of them. Niru and Shemira are his favorites, they’re actually helpful. Fereal and Kelthur are like his younger cousins he keeps out of trouble. Grezhul and Thoran? Have to reteach them manners. Baden? Working on getting that lich out of him, Vedan has no patience for trouble makers. Don’t get me started on when Vedan sends Silvina on that assassination mission and she comes back after a week a Graveborn. All hell would break lose then.
Does Vedan have any idea what he’s doing? Absolutely not. Is he going to back down? Also Absolutely Not. He just wants to raise his kids and live in peaceful solitude with most of the Graveborn in his flock. If that means he has to act like he did before, so be it. Hypogeans and vampire hunters be damned, Vedan’s never been one to follow anyone else’s rules.
If he can cheat death, he can cheat the other rules too.
I have… so many ideas for him, I adore and hate him. I want to rattle him and make him face consequences-

7: I want to see Niru, Shemira, and Daimon have a family picnic. No one gets hurt or attacks them. Just a wonderful and happy time under a full moon. Maybe they invite Vedan, Isabella, and Silvia to join them.

Greetings Adventurers!
As summer is upon us, Calimon is bringing new vitality to Esperia! The Field of Stars lighting our path this month is Calix. As the altar's chalice is brimming with dews, the devout mortals worship it while the constellations of stars shower it with blessings.
Here are our birthday heroes for the month: Raku, Skriath, Thesku, Vedan, Arden, Lucius, and Angelo. Let's wish them––and all adventurers celebrating this month too––a very happy birthday!!

Curious but
What mythological creatures would you give some of the AFK Arena characters? Or what they give you the vibes of?
Ok so I know this is likely for the anti-honesty ask but I can't help but answer this genuinely because hoo boy, let's go!
Since AFK Arena has so many characters, I will list as many as I can without really going deeper into my reasoning. If you have more questions, feel free to ask! Also, I will be tossing in a lot of mythological creatures from all over but I will just say up front that I am not overly familiar with most mythologies out there and I'm also into DnD quite a lot lately so that will influence my opinion a lot.
And the ones who are canonically mythological creatures already won't count unless I have a different hc for them (except Vedan, but that's just like... a must).

Note: Pygmalion originally referred to a specific painting woman that came to life but later on, G. B. Shaw used it in a more general, metaphorical meaning of a personified piece of art.
A special case will be Cecilia. I would see Cecilia as a sort of creature associated with vengeance but not in the Erinyes or furies sense. Something more methodic, systematic. Ayakashi akashi comes to mind but that's not correct either since, from my understanding of them, they do not tend to be malicious for the most part.
The vampires range from those who view their condition as a necessary evil, through those who suffer through it, and all the way to those who enjoy their condition as is, you can probably guess who is who.
As for the dullahan, I know they are usually depicted as headless horsemen but it is less about the exact depiction for me and more just... vibes I guess? Like, the dullahan are not explicitly evil, usually, they are searching for something that was valuable to them in life or protecting a certain area. They are lost souls with a calling before anything else.
Golems were created for a specific task while pygmalion exists for its artistic value.
Valkyries are the only ones where I stuck to the specific gender originally associated with them because I mean, come on. It's valkyries, the whole point is that they're powerful amazing warrior women.
Fairies and sprites are more mischievous and free-spirited but not all of them are very fond of unexpected visitors so it felt right that some of them are shyer than others.
I don't think I need to explain the succubus/incubus tier, I'll just say I didn't expect not ending up with a single guy in there, that surprised me too. But just to be perfectly clear, I could definitely imagine most of my favorites in there regardless of gender.
Angels range from helpful and kind to steadfast and brave, and everything in between.
Fallen angels are either tragically robbed of their home and innocence or they are the evilest of them all, those who chose corruption despite having the light within their grasp.
Devils are methodical and systematical in their evil, they like to have things in order and won't cause random destruction on a whim.
Dragons have a deep sense of pride as well as an innate desire to gather the things they consider valuable – be it money, symbols of recognition, or sentimental objects. They are also fiercely protective of things and people they value.
Merfolk and sirens are two sides of the same coin, blessed with natural charm and attractiveness and using it to either bring joy or suffering to their surroundings.
Poltergeist is a powerful undead presence often driven by the thirst for revenge or deep regret, and they come in all flavors from depressed to vengeful.
Furies are creatures of revenge and vengeance but they can be chaotic and they often go overboard and don't ever stop.

YouTuber AU: Part 1
Niru is an unboxer, but the only thing he unboxes is coffins. How has he not been arrested for desecrating graves?
Vedan makes a terrible family YouTube channel with Isabella and Silvina, and if the sisters mature, they'll realize how fucked up it was.
Silas is one of those chemistry YouTubers.
Ferael is an archery YouTuber, but people are often distracted by how hot he is.
Hodgkin is a horror story reader YouTuber. His main focus is pirate/ocean stories. Sometimes Nara makes a guest appearance.

Vedan's face scrunched as he tried his damnedest to keep from gagging, even with the Graveborn's inherently dulled senses, ink tasted completely foul. The effort didn't last long as he briefly convulsed against his own will, quickly lifting the stained cravat to his mouth to contain the ink-laden coughing fit. He already had to wash the damn thing anyway, what did it matter how much ink got spat onto it?
Ferael elected to remain silent during the fit, somewhat awkwardly knocking on Vedan's back in an attempt to help. The Count would probably make him swear blind that he wouldn't retell this moment to others later, but for now he just had to wait for him to pull himself back together. "I... I still think you should just bring someone in, you know." He said as Vedan's coughs finally lessened.
"Ugh. Accountants ask too many questions." The Count mumbled into the fabric, past caring about dignity and physically scrubbing his tongue free of the disgusting substance.
Ferael shook his head, spluttering for a moment while his brain tried to process what had just been said, stumbling back a step or two. "Wha-jus-wha... They're accountants! It's their job to ask questions!!"
"And I said they ask too many of them!" Vedan growled, giving up on freeing himself from the infernal taste for now and very deliberately grabbing a new pencil rather than a pen. "Now, did you actually come here to help or did you just want to stand there and look pretty?"
The archer's head dropped with a sigh, silently reaching over to grab the other chair available and setting it down next to Vedan's before also plonking himself down, swiping one of the documents off his table. If the Count was going to commit tax fraud, he may as well have someone proofreading it.

Distractions
Vedan x Gn! Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1,198 words
Contains: Fluff, suggestive themes, teasing from reader's end, temptation, written mostly from Vedan's Pov, Vedan being hopelessly smitten
A/N: I made this way fluffier than I meant to. I spend so much time with this dude in my head that I've already cemented my personal HC that he's a hopeless loverboy when he does fall in love. He's an evil bastard, yes, but damn, can he be soft for his partner and kids... I also didn't specify any living faction, but I wasn't writing with Graveborn Reader in mind. Planning on making another oneshot with Graveborn Reader too <3
Tumblr media
“... Have I ever told you how handsome you look without your coat and with your sleeves rolled up?” You asked with feigned innocence, watching the Count freeze for a moment before he continued writing.
“...You're being distracting…”
“Am I?”
“Yes,” Vedan hissed as he haunched over his desk more, running a hand through his hair and narrowing his eyes at the papers in front of him, “You are being very distracting.”
He could feel your giddy grin as you got up to saunter closer and lean over his shoulder teasingly, pretending to read the words he was writing down. Feeling your hand on his shoulder and the solid weight of you leaning against him left his stomach flipping, as always. It wasn't hunger, and it wasn't that pleasant sadistic feeling he'd get when fighting either. Blissful. Nostalgic. Pleasant in a soft way.
“So what I’m hearing is… you think I'm more interesting than your work?”
You had been doing this for an hour now, the teasing. You had been relaxing in his study while he worked on important documents for Thoran and a few of his noble acquaintances. It wasn't a new occurrence, Vedan enjoyed your company more than you or anyone else realized. Of course he did, you wouldn't have been his lover if he didn't. But moments like this, moments you teased and tested his self control… he was beginning to think you enjoyed riling him up and seeing him fluster when he couldn’t take it anymore. Not this time. He was determined to outwait you.
The Count scoffed and chuckled briskly, resting his head into his hand as your warmth diverted his attention. Warm. You were always so warm. Not unexpected, since you were alive, but there was something about you that was… intoxicating. Vedan found it overpowering to a degree. Your scent, your warmth, your eyes and smile and laugh and-
“... Unfortunately, yes.” He finally muttered as he lightly tapped the pen tip against the desk. He could already feel his thoughts clouding up, his priorities shifting when you laughed at his response. He almost broke completely when you wrapped your arms around him from behind, burying your face into his hair and shoulder with a soft kiss. A small hum escaped him, his brows furrowing as the corner of his mouth twitched. Why did you do this to him? Did you not realize how persuasive you could be?
… or maybe you just knew he was a pushover when it came to you and the girls. He could rarely say no to the three of you as it was. When you got like this, who was he to refuse?
“... Vedan?”
A sharp inhale answered you before he closed his eyes and stilled his tapping, managing to ground out, “Yes, my dear?”
“Do you need me to back off? You're tensing up again.”
At that, Vedan opened his eyes again with a frown, raising his brows and lifting his head slightly. He was too tense, was getting too wound up. You probably took that as him about to lose his temper, which would be true for anyone else. But not for his children, or you. Not for one of the few rays of sun left in his eternal night.
He grumbled slightly at that, turning in his seat to loop an arm around your waist and pull you closer so he could bury his face in your shirt. Putting down his pen, he reached up to pull you down so he could kiss the underside of your jaw with a huff, basking in your scent and body heat.
“I need you to calm down,” he muttered against your neck, raising his head slightly to brush his lips against your ear, “My patience has its limits, darling. I can only handle so much before I give in to temptation. And you know me, I give in excess.”
A smug feeling swelled in Vedan's chest when he felt you shiver at that, unable to resist one of his fanged grins when he felt your pulse speed up. He hummed sweetly and pressed another kiss to your jaw before pulling away, chirping cheerily, “Now, I really must focus on these papers. Letters and files don't write themselves after all.”
And then, blessed silence. He took solace in your steady presence beside him as he picked up his pen once more, keeping his arm around your waist to keep you close as he wrote. He had thought you had heeded his warning, listening closely to your pulse flutter and race as he lightly traced your side.
He thought you had. Then you brushed a lock of his hair behind his ear and leaned down to press a lingering kiss to his cheek. Then another, and another. A warning growl rumbled in his throat, but he couldn't hide the blush darkening his cheeks. When you began messing with his cravat and brushing your warm fingertips against his neck, he snapped.
Putting down his pen with a little more force than he intended, he stood up and pushed the papers back a bit to make room. For you.
To his annoyed amusement, you immediately tried to bolt away from him with a breathless laugh. As if you could escape him after messing with him for well over an hour.
“Oh, absolutely not, love.” He stated firmly with an evil grin, wrapping his arms around your waist and dragging you back against his chest, “Ask and you shall receive. You aren't getting away from this.”
Vedan couldn’t help a chuckle of his own feeling you try to squirm out of his arms, pulling you back to the desk to sit you on the edge. A playful, drawn-out long-suffering sigh escaped him as he caged you inbetween his arms, asking in a tired tone, “What am I to do with you?”
You gave him a smile that would have made his heart skip a beat if he were still alive, reaching up to grab ahold of his shoulders and pull him down to you. He knew what you wanted, and relented with a defeated sound as he accepted the pecking kiss. Resting his head against yours, he smiled deviously as your feigned innocent act slowly dissolved into nervous anticipation.
“Ha… hopefully nothing too extreme. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to apologize for my earlier behavior?”
“Pleading for mercy already?”
Grinning weakly, you answered, “Maybe?”
“No.” Vedan denied with a smirk, tilting his head to brush your lips together, “Teasing me so boldly, and then expecting me to go easy on you… Shame, love. For shame.”
It was your turn to sigh deeply, giving him a longer kiss before muttering, “Well, it was worth a shot.”
“Mh. Was it?” he asked shortly, moving to trace your outer thigh and watch you squirm.
“I- Yes…”
Vedan's smile widened as he chuckled darkly. With a nuzzling kiss, he pushed you back more and pinned you down. He looked quite thrilled, eager now. He did always love these little intervals you provided whenever you were around, despite his exasperation over his work.
“Hm, perhaps it was worth it… I suppose I could do with a small break.”
“Ten minutes?”
“Fifteen.”

Lightbearer Vedan
The idea of aging and death doesn't scare him – it offends him. Why should he meet the same fate as the common unwashed masses? No no no, he is a noble, and he will make the difference clear to all. And if he can't live forever, he will at least live longer than all of them. Undeath? Necromancy? Why turn to something so repulsive when all he needs is a little bit of alchemy, magic, and a generous donation to the Church of Light to keep things quiet and supply him with enough of their little acolytes?
