How to start ballet when you're in your late teens and 20s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey everyone, I started ballet at the age of 22 so I wanted to make a how to start ballet post for people who didn't start doing ballet when they're younger.
My story: I wanted to do ballet since I was a child and had a poor upbringing so any social activity that required constant money was out of consideration. My passion for ballet ignited when I started watching ballet shows regularly and I wanted to try it. I first started on Ballet for Absolute Beginner series by Ballet Misfit and I did ballet with the help of it for 6 months. Then I graduated from college and got into a real ballet class for adult beginners after finding a job and getting my financial freedom. So I have been doing ballet for 2 years now consistently.
What to expect:
Passion and determination: you're an adult beginner in a dance that requires perfectionism. You'll feel like a duck during the first months, even the the first year until you get the hang of it. You need to enjoy the process and love doing ballet to survive the first months. Ballet is not a gate for slimming down or looking aesthetic ™ it's a near God damn sport and you need patience to get better at it.
Slow progress of flexibility: you're going to get flexible in time but you'll probably won't be able to do splits or an attitude in a month if you haven't been able to do them before. Flexibility is a slow process and it requires consistent effort. If you force yourself to get flexible immediately during the first months you'll sprain yourself and your progress will be even slower.
Muscle gains: doing ballet makes you gain serious muscles and you need to gain serious muscles to do ballet. You'll need core strength for that balances and calf strength for relevés. I recommend consistent practice targeting the leg and core muscles to be able to hold the balances longer.
Vocabulary: First thing first, you'll need to learn the names of the poses because it's a universal language in ballet. It's French and it's chic but learning the names of the poses is not that hard. You'll get the hang of it by time.
Online learning: Ballet Beginner series by Ballet Misfit is great to begin if you just like doing ballet don't have any ambitions to be dancer, be on Pointe or do the turns. However, it has some cons because you're most likely learn the poses wrong because there's no ballet teacher to fix your stance.
Finding a class: it's better tho find a class if you have the ambition to learn ballet. The most important thing is your teacher. You do not want a perfectionist Russian Ballet teacher when you're an adult learner. You'll need someone who is kind and patient. Also finding a class that is near you is a huge con.
Proper gear: it's everywhere and it's expensive. You can do ballet with usual tights and socks or proper Ballet clothes. The difference is that having proper Ballet shoes etc will give you more motivation to continue. The con is that it's expensive.
Caution: I am reminding again, Ballet is not an inherently pro-*na dance it's a damn near sport and an amazing dance form. Get your treatments if you have any Ed history.
Consistent practice: as always, practice makes perfect. Make sure to practice what you've learned in the class at home if you have time.
So this is all there's to expect as a adult ballet beginner. You can add anything if you're a pro or you have came across something else, I'm open to feedback.
Make sure to enjoy the process and don't hurt yourself. Have fun 💕🩰

My sister-in-law is starting ballet and she wants me to give her one or two classes before her first class so she doesn't look like she doesn't know anything at all, so naturally I agreed. I was excited that she's starting ballet and love talking about it, but I never expected I would have SO MUCH FUN making combinations. I've come up with so many over the past day or so and can't stop lol. Picking the music is so fun, I'm using music I love dancing to, and then creating a combination to the music is just amazing. Some might be a bit....challenging for a beginner beginner, but I think that's a good thing!
This is the music and what combination each piece goes with!
Warm Up: Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 no. 2 (obviously)
Plies: The Shire theme from Lord of the Rings
Tendu and degage share music: Faure's Pelleas and Melisandre Sicilienne
Rond de jambes: Ashokan Farewell
Frappes: Solor's variation
Adagio at barre: Gadfly Romance
Grand Battements: Habanera from Carmen
Tendu in center: Tchaikovsky's piano concerto number 1 (duh)
Balances/Waltz: Swan Lake waltz
Petit allegro: Lord of the Rings surprise
Reverance: Nikiya's death

one thing I want to know about you: how did you get into ballet?
Wahoo!! Hello friend!
I started ballet originally when I was three years old because I loved dancing, the Nutcracker, and Angelina Ballerina! My parents took me to ballet lessons for a number of years, until we moved and I didn't do it again until recently!!!
thank you so much for this question, and because of a few kind doses of reality, I am pursuing it as a hobby and recreation because it sparks joy! Who knows where it will lead, but it will be wonderful through the whole process because I love nothing more!

Studio Review: Barre class with Alexandra Somova at Artis How to Dance
1 October 2023 — I had the privilege of taking a dance class with Alexandra Somova today in Vienna. This was my first class in 3 years!
Alexandra was a graduate of Vaganova Ballet Academy before joining the Mariinsky, and then Bavarian State Ballet. She currently teaches here in Vienna, where she founded Artis How to Dance. I was surprised at how beginner/intermediate friendly it was! I was side by side with adult beginners and even with years of ballet training, I still found it challenging! I also got corrections and learned a lot.
Tumblr media
Upon entering the place, I was shocked at how many pictures there were of Alina Somova! Her tutu from Swan Lake was even on display there! Needless to say, I was definitely starstruck. Alexandra, herself, just moved so differently. I’ve been an admirer of the Vaganova students and watching her raise her leg with such ease was definitely humbling. Despite that, she was so warm and welcoming to dancers of all levels. She was attentive and corrected everyone in a kind way.
This class was also much different from the classes that I’m used to in the US. Those are typically fast paced and if you’re left behind, you’re left behind. Alexandra’s exercises were very slow and very deliberate. A simple tendu and temps lié required muscle activation and coordination. There was also a large focus on épaulement, pulling up, and relaxing your shoulders, while also having strength in your arms.
She was also very particular with timing, which exercises were suited for accent ins vs accent outs. Everything was just much slower, and she would often tell us that we were way ahead of the music. You can definitely tell she’s a Vaganova graduate that way 🥴 She also took the time to correct everyone on ronds de jame en l’air and petit battements. Oh gosh, even on where to put your weight when you’re on relève. Not too sickled, not too pronated, just right at the middle of your tarsals/meta tarsals.
If I were a local, I’d be taking classes there every single day. There’s just so much to learn and the environment she provides is welcoming. This class was very inspiring and I will definitely take ballet classes again when I get home.

protecting my peace. learning I don’t owe men that make me uncomfortable kindness. I owe myself time to process and rest.
feeling like life is out of control so let’s do some affirmations: I am good at what I do. I get everything done that needs to be done. I am not anxious. My catastrophes are not true. I deserve time off.

I’m a ballet adult beginner (26yo) I’m currently about to start my second year in a ballet academy. How long from what you know/experience do I have to wait before I can wear pointes? My teacher has hinted I have great flexible feet.
See this is hard for me to answer without knowing anything about where you are technically or how much you are training. However, the one positive thing is that you’re at a ballet academy, which generally has better levels of instruction and reputable teachers. Trust in your teacher, work correctly and give yourself time to build strength and control.
While flexible, archly feet are great, dancers with this type of foot can also have weak ankles or metatarsals. Make sure you’re doing a variety of Theraband and foot strengthening exercises! I see a lot of adult ballet dancers on pointe who have the strength to push themselves up but don’t have a good articulation of the foot when coming on and off pointe! That takes more control, but looks so much more polished and is better for your calves and Achilles tendons!!

so I live in the middle of nowhere now (which ya know, pros and cons) but found out that someone does offer some adult ballet? and I always wanted to dance but ya know chronic health probs plus not enough money growing up meant I never got the chance. but watching dance can literally bring me to tears lol (I swear that's actually a big deal for me, I don't cry despite the mental health stuff ok) SO I'm thinking of going for it. and I'm kind of excited so
