are you an audio drama fan? if you are can you please listen to Achewillow? It's an audio drama podcast available free wherever you prefer to listen to podcasts, including Spotify. Unlike many audio drama podcasts, this is a single person narration and there is no meta component — it is like listening to a story being told with enhanced elements rather than a play being enacted or the recording being a known aspect of the story.

If you like T. Kingfisher (I'm specifically thinking of Nettle and Bone) Achewillow has a similar vibe to it. I hesitate to use the term "cozy horror" as it is only a little bit horror and I don't particularly like cozy as a genre modifier but I'll have to stick with that for now. The brief synopsis is that a very young french canadian woman with a passion (or as she might put it, a destiny) for cooking stumbles into a strange inheritance from an unknown long lost great aunt — a small coffee shop and bakery and the building it occupies, now hers if she chooses to accept living in the strange town of Achewillow that somehow rests exactly along the US-Canadian border, noted by a visible line drawn through town and through the little shop itself and without any kind of border security. This is somehow not the strangest part of Achewillow, and neither are the demon-fearing raccoons that keep breaking in to steal both her salt and her brioche.

I listen to a lot of audio dramas, radio plays, audio books, etc. I always have since I was young which l believe helped trained me into listening and focusing skills that are otherwise difficult. I've listened to poetry recitations on tape, old time radio plays over AM stations, and heaps and heaps of the glut of drama podcasts that have come out. After finishing the first season I think Achewillow is a particularly good listen. The narrative doesn't meander, the narrator is pleasant to listen to, and the audio quality is high so it never takes you out of the listening experience. If you like audio fiction please give it a listen and then post about it on Tumblr so I can see your thoughts, this is a selfish post in the end after all 😈🖤

Achewillow

I just found another podcast that nobody seems to know about but should be a lot more popular than it is.

It is called Achewillow.

It's about a 19-year-old girl named Miriam DuFour who inherits a cafe in a tiny little town on the border of Vermont and Canada.

In her first 24 hours in town, she encounters an actual demon, raccoons that are definitely not what they appear to be, and a dead body in the alley behind her cafe.

In a way, it reminds me of Welcome to Night Vale, but instead of seeing the town through the eyes of the radio host, we see the town throug the eyes of the girl who owns the local cafe. She cooks, she bakes, and she spends the series taking care of her customers and coming to terms with the weirdness there.

There are six seasons, and I'm only partially through the second, but I can say that this is defnintely one you want to listen to.

So here's the thing about listening to a podcast where the protagonist is 18 or 19 years old. Yes, part of the reason I see things that she doesn't is because good writing has some foreshadowing. But some of it is also that I have been on this planet for far longer and some things that should be obvious to somebody wouldn't be to someone her age and it's making me crazy. Which is also good writing but you get the point I am making.

The number of times I have yelled at Miriam DuFour to "get smarter faster, girl!" is not zero.

If you are looking for podcasts with a female protag i could recommend achewillow, she inherits a bakery from a distant relative but instead of living a Hallmark movie she experiences the horrors™ i only listened to the first 3 seasons but I'm pretty sure the mc is bi, she has very complicated feelings about a demon lady, but i can't get more into that without spoiling it, the narration is a little different from other podcasts, if i had to give it a hioer specific genre I'd call it cozy horror, she defeats a lot of monsters with the power of baking, wich is really just witchcraft

OH THIS IS SO FUN SOUNDING WTF i luvvv podcasts that started pre-2020 roundabouts so much because i feel like a lot of bigger podcasts now have a very similar vibe ..... not inherently but often the vibes feel somewhat similar and i love some shit that gets out there and experiments more and i feel like theres a lot more of that in some older material (: this sounds so cool ill put it on my list!!!!
