I love trying to parse together anything about the Doctor's Academy years. He was a "terror" for 120 years. He regenerated one teacher and nearly regenerated a second one. He had no friends until school. he put a teacher in a time loop. He made a bacteria that put multi cellular lifeforms into a coma. He was in a band. It took him two tries to graduate with the bare minimum grade. No one can agree how long he went to school for or if he even graduated. He has a doctorate in cheese making. His friends kept trying to get him to join a rebellion and the government kept erasing his memory about it. The doctor is recorded to have attended a gallifreyan university that doesn't exist.

Like, what is this? I love this. Everything and nothing is canon and the world is a beautiful place.

dazai making up a whole language with fyodor that no one else can understand is amazing but imagine him using codes that, very objectively speaking, you could crack, it's just that no normal person would ever make the insane leaps in logic that it requires. except for someone familiar with dazai's weird thinking patterns, that is.

i just love the idea of dazai's unhinged antics being dialed up to an eleven when he was in the port mafia, and oda being the only one who simply wouldn't bat an eye at it but chuuya was the only one who would actually get it.

like imagine ango at the end of the jailbreak, his boss saying he should allow himself to sigh and lean back and maybe indulge himself, pat him on the shoulder, tell him what he pulled off reading heart rates wasn't easy and he should be proud for being able to keep up with such a plan

but ango i-drank-with-teenage-dazai-and-also-had-the-records-for-every-soukoku-mission sakaguchi can only remember the time dazai was like using greek sign language through his breathing patterns to communicate from a submarine from beneath the pacific ocean or something, and chuuya could not fathom how no one else could understand him.

and that was the day mori signed off on skk being exclusive partners because every subordinate in the room was crying tears of blood by the time chuuya finished explaining which blood pressure level was warning them about a bomb, which blinking sequence was him conveying the vault password and which series of inhales was just him calling mori a bitch.

(ango also pointedly did not want to think about how smug dazai had looked after the mission when mori confirmed skk would only be each others' partners for efficiency and to maintain everyone else's sanity

or about how when he called chuuya to tell him about dazai's prison break scheme he could only get like 3 out of 276 steps into the plan before chuuya rolled his eyes, said "got it" then hung up and pulled the whole thing off without a hitch.)

Hey hey! The Scrapnik Island trade book comes out 2 days from now, on 8/29! Since I haven't posted them here yet, here's all 4 of my covers for the miniseries! Additional thoughts about the covers themselves below:

Big thank yous to David Mariotte and Riley Farmer! They were really kind in letting me do the A covers for this miniseries, ALONG with character design and coloring work! My goal for these covers was to make them feel like old horror movie posters. I also strategically tried to not reveal Mecha Sonic in most of them, as the covers were being announced before the story details at the time and we really wanted Mecha's return to be a big surprise! (Natalie Haines' cover absolutely knocked it out of the park for that reveal)

Color-wise, like the story itself, I wanted to gradually increase the amount of red and intensity until the breaking point of the finale in #4. For the 4th cover, I really wanted to depict the intense emotions of the finale. The fight between Sonic and Mecha Sonic, the Death Egg's shadow looming over it all, and at the bottom, a sunflower, falling into a burning incinerator. However, I also wanted to make it so if you flip the image, like someone miraculously flipped the entire situation upside-down, instead of falling into a burning abyss, the sunflower is meeting a beautiful new sunrise, a new day.

Well, save for when he grabs certain people by the face and looks them into their eyes very intensely like he can beam the melody into their minds.

Of course, learning that Najma can link directly to people's minds, he may have occasionally acted up in ways that made them feel extremely uncomfortable, but they understand he didn't mean anything nefarious by it when he obsessively tried to get them to link with him.

They didn't initially tell anyone about that, nor that it started to get worse over time.

Some Talon scientists became aware of the situation after he had a moment(tm) and they started planning their tests in such a manner that they would avoid contact with each other as much as possible for a time.

Najma never held it against Sigma and continued to care about the guy. This made their omnic companions within Talon criticize them. It was after this that Setesh volunteered as additional protection for Najma within Talon, but Najma turned down the offer. They stuck around for a short while and increased the frequency of their visits to make sure Talon was taking necessary precautions, however.

Maximilien was happy to assist by having them stay at his casino where they were used for interrogation experiments. Najma always found these extremely unpleasant.

Sigma was deliberately not informed of what had happened, meaning he was confused by the increased distance between him and his fellow subject, because he didn't remember what he did.

Were it not for Setesh's presence, Talon would have used the opportunity to increase the pressure of tests on Najma immediately. Whenever certain duties pulled them away, they did more difficult tests. Eventually, Set was gone for a more extended time. Najma had no way to contact any people who would be opposed to it when Talon conducted a test that nearly bricked them.

This incident is what caused Ramattra to introduce them to the Shambali orb thing, in spite of feeling unnerved by their abilities, in the hope that practicing with it would help them gain more control over their condition.

Meanwhile, Moira tried to manipulate them to become more involved in Talon's efforts to "stabilize" Sigma, using the fact that they were yet to recover enough to be up and running to entrap them in this rather unpleasant conversation and suggesting they could help Talon develop more humane testing and examination methods.

The use of omnic energy and the shambali orb greatly improved Najma's ability to perform higher pressure tasks, only becoming more proficient as time goes on. The scientists still don't quite understand how it works, but Talon is pleased to see progress being made.

Obligatory disclaimer regarding canon muse involvement: The Sigma parts go out the window for any Sigma but mine (unless otherwise discussed). Ramattra, however, would be a bit impossible to dismiss. Loser, get a student. Get reverse Genji'd, nerd. Make them worse. ))
